Admit it, almost everyone has had to speak on the topic of ‘Cleanliness’, whether it’s school, college, or the workplace. It is, but ironical, that a topic so common and well-known would stump many a writer when asked to put pen to paper on the subject.

To take cleanliness as an example, a topic that’s not usually looked at as one to narrate about, try telling people stories from your own personal experiences– how you’ve come across unbearably filthy areas, and how it’s affected you and your family. Make it personal and take your audience with you on this journey.

5. The Trick of Theatrics

Public speaking is a performance in itself. It isn’t restricted to simply speaking well-written material–that’s just half of it. The other half comes to delivery.

How you deliver your written material, is what will grab the attention of your audience.

When you take cleanliness, it is something that is to be inculcated consciously and imperatively. Thus, through your tone and gestures, you would have to convey that necessity and express the urgency of the situation.

This can be expressed through tone, gestures, body language , and eye contact.

Your conclusion should reiterate your objective and summarise your speech. Once again, don’t stick to a cliche “Thank You” or “Hope you enjoyed this.”

If you notice, the best speeches never end on such notes. They either end with a strong quote or poem or leave by asking a question/ interacting with the audience.

When it comes to cleanliness, repeat and emphasize on the urgency–how cleanliness is the need of the hour. Leave them with a question, possibly around the grim future that must await, if adequate measures aren’t taken. Don’t end abruptly.

Imagine feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, as you place your feet in cool waters. You look up to see clear blue skies and all around you, there exists an endless beige, of velvet sands and an atmosphere of pure joy. That’s how I’d imagined it–a trip to the beach. Yet, I didn’t get that. Would you like to know why? Spotless, clear, cleansed, scrubbed– these are words we use to describe something clean. That’s what cleanliness, in a general sense is. A person is neat and clean, when they’re well-dressed and well-groomed, while an area is clean when dirt, plastic, and other materials aren’t strewn around. Anything clean attracts a person. It’s as simple as that. So, a few weeks ago, when I’d planned a trip to the beach with my friends, I was SO excited! It’d been ages since we’d made plans, and frankly, it was long overdue. “It’s a beach, what could go wrong?” is what I’d thought to myself. Little did I know… The day finally arrived, and there it was. I could see the beach from a distance. It looked just like I’d imagined it. We quickly removed our shoes, and placed our feet into the sand, when all of a sudden, I felt like my right foot hadn’t quite sunk into the sand, like my left one. I looked down and found a banana peel caught between my toes. That really sucked all the excitement out. I looked around and found plastic bottles, polythene bags, tin cans, paper plates, peelings, pieces of cloth–the list could go on. When did something so beautiful become tampered with? And who’s responsible? Even as we came closer to the waters, I could see remnants of garbage floating by, and suddenly, the beach just wasn’t as appealing anymore. With this late, yet sudden realisation, I couldn’t look at anything the same way. There’s garbage all around us. And, we’ve perhaps gotten so accustomed to it, that the heap of garbage on the corner of our street will just happen to stay and remain that way. Cleanliness- a term so multidimensional, that it invades every aspect of our lives. Some may even say that it’s a state of mind which translates onto our day-to-day activities. Yet, a fleeting thought– if we’re all so familiar with what cleanliness entails and how inculcating it improves our quality of life, why are we STILL in a position where it’s the need of the hour? How do we fix this? They say charity begins at home, and that’s where we begin. A simple reorganising of your closet, or room is a great start. Of course, it doesn’t end there. Start with your area of residence, make note of the kind of garbage disposal and recycling it uses, stay informed, and inform others, as well. You see, it’s very easy to pin the blame on others for ‘not doing their job’ when it comes to an unclean environment. But, what if, we’re somehow the root cause? Are we doing EVERYTHING we possibly can to make a difference? I started my speech by asking you to ‘imagine’ and envision something we’ve once had, and no more do. We’ve somehow found ourselves in a situation where the real has turned into the unreal, instead of it being the other way around. I am asking what this is. I am not saying that I am only good or I never involved in such activities. I am just saying that how long we will be unconscious and involved in such type of unconscious activities. When the day will come, we will be much conscious every moment so that such bad activities cannot be happened. If we are not trying to keep our country clean then how we will protect tourists from other countries from making it dirty.

I think, none of the day is better than today. Today is the day when we should promise ourselves and our mother country that we will keep it clean forever and never make it dirty in future. Just think that, how bright our homes and whole country look at Diwali, what will happen if it look daily. If the cleanliness only at Diwali can give us confidence, power and positive energy for the whole year, then again think that, can we not get power, confidence, positive energy, a healthy life, a healthy environment, and positive attitude of other countries worldwide forever.

We can change the drastic situation of our country through collective ownership. Instead of infrastructure improvements, effective plants for wastes treatment from industries, agriculture, and other fields, laws and rules by government, etc; we need to think and consider our own responsibility using our own mind and effort. It is not the responsibility of government only; it is the collective responsibility of each and every Indian citizen.

It is true that we cannot clean the whole country in a day or year, however; it will be our big hand if we stop making filthy the public places in India. It is our responsibility to stop ourselves as well as others who are making India’s public property filthy. As we generally see in our family that, every member has some particular responsibility (someone for sweeping, someone for cleaning, someone for bringing vegetables, someone for outside works, etc) and he/she has to do that timely in anyway. Just like that, if all the Indians take responsibility (of cleanliness and prevent from getting dirty) for small space in the surrounding areas, I think that, the day is not so far when we will see cleanliness everywhere all through the country.

Cleanliness is very important for it is directly related to so many essential parts of life and hygiene. First of all, cleanliness is directly related to health. If one stays unclean and unhygienic, he/she is prone to diseases and infection.

Moreover, if we litter around and make our neighbourhood dirty, we are only damaging our own resources. Sooner or later such acts will only harm our own health and well-being. It doesn’t make sense to damage our own natural resources, essential for life.

The sense of cleanliness should be imparted at a very early age. Because lessons learned at an early age are never forgotten. Children must be taught about the importance of cleanliness. They must be taught about maintaining personal cleanliness as well as the environmental cleanliness.

Let’s begin with the views of Mahatma Gandhi on cleanliness. The father of the nation once said “We can no more gain God’s blessings with an unclean body than with an unclean mind. A clean body cannot reside in an unclean city”. This certainly tells about the significance that he gave to the physical cleanliness as well as mental cleanliness. Mahatma Gandhi took cleanliness to the level of spirituality.

He was strictly against spitting in public and open defecation. In fact, he had also once stated that the lavatory should be as clean as the drawing-room. His thoughts on cleanliness were correct and I could only wish that we follow them the same way as we revere him.

It’s illogical that we take bath twice daily and keep our house impeccably clean, but defecate in the open and pollute the environment or litter in the neighbourhood. That would only be a mockery of cleanliness in the most hypocritic way.

Someone, whose name I would not like to reveal here, once said –“Indians are personally clean but communally dirty”. Painful it might be but it is also true! The majority of us, only care about how clean we ourselves and our houses look and are callously negligent when it comes to the cleanliness of our streets, roads, or other public places.

Would you spit in your own house as you do on roads, walls, and other places? No, you wouldn’t! That’s because you feel a sense of responsibility for your house but not for your environment. This very basic thought has to be changed. We need to feel more responsibility towards the cleanliness of our environment the same as we feel towards our own houses. It’s only when we start considering the whole environment as an essential part of our dwelling that things will change for good.

Please pardon me for I am going to tell you what the citizens of some other countries think about Indians. Some citizens of some foreign countries perceive Indians as filthy and untidy. I am not going to name any country, but it is a fact that global perception about Indians on cleanliness is as such. But that is only on cleanliness and we Indians excel in any other sphere, even on foreign land.

But, still there is a need for change. We must diminish this belief about Indians being dirty and prove the critics wrong. Can you imagine how painful to Bapu this whole perception about Indian cleanliness would have been if he was alive today?

Friends we should break this shell of beliefs that cocoons our true essence. We Indians had been the cleanest for millenniums. Our religious texts have stated cleanliness to be a way of life. It’s just that we have become a little lousy sometime down the line. But still, we can change and bring back that lost glory. I strongly believe that India will again one day join the league of cleanest nations of the planet.

There would soon be a day when people around the globe will consider Indians as clean, both personally as well as communally. With this I would like to end my speech, hoping that we all begin a new fight against filthiness and untidiness and fight for a clean society and clean India. Jai Hind!!

From a young age, We all are taught to be clean and keep our surroundings clean. It is because this is a habit that takes time to grow. With time one can easily witness its benefits in his/her life. It’s one of the arts that we need to learn and apply to our lives.

Cleanliness For an individual

There are some quick habits to maintain cleanliness like washing hands before having a meal. It ensures no bacteria can enter your body. Afterwards, we should always eat food prepared in clean conditions and consume freshwater.

Moreover, Avoid eating outsides and drinking water from unclean sources. Always keep a water bottle with you. One can iron clothes before wearing them so that germs will get killed. Take a bath daily with an antiseptic soap.

Environmental Cleanliness

I just have talked about how an individual can maintain cleanliness but that is not enough. To ensure an overall healthy environment , we should keep our surroundings clean. Starting from houses to roads, parks, public places, and towns, Drainage systems need proper and frequent cleaning.

If I talk about a country, the population is the greatest power of any country. It contributes to the progress of the nation. So, the health of citizens holds vital importance in a country’s growth and prosperity. Government should ensure high-level hygiene & good-quality drinking water in public places.

As we know the quality of air and water is so significant. So, the government should also ensure the good quality of air by regulating pollution laws.

Be it our homes, workplaces, public places, roads etc. Therefore, it becomes our responsibility to inculcate that feeling in the students.

Just as food, water, oxygen and other things are important for our existence, cleanliness is also important for our healthy physical and mental health. Do we not hear news about people dying of diseases like malaria, jaundice etc., which thrive in dirty surroundings? So to prevent such cases the people of India should focus on maintaining cleanliness which will help in securing a respectable place in the eyes, soul and hearts and mind of the foreigners who visit our country.

And if every Indian citizen contributes to some extent in this Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, then we cannot even imagine how effective it will prove to be to fulfill the objective of this campaign. In fact you can also teach people living in your immediate vicinity, or those you know about the importance of cleanliness in their day to day life.

However dear students please also try to understand that you cannot apply this to everyone. Cleanliness is a good habit and not everyone is born with it, so those who do not clean, try to explain the benefits of cleanliness, which emphasizes cleanliness rather than imposing your views on others. Cleanliness can also be of different types like personal cleanliness, environmental cleanliness, workplace cleanliness (like our offices, schools, colleges etc.). It does not take much time for us to maintain cleanliness in our daily life – just as we do regular cleaning tasks like cooking, eating, taking bath etc., cleanliness should also become an integral part of our everyday life. In fact, by doing small things like not throwing garbage on the floor or road, throwing garbage in the dustbin, not spitting or urinating on the road, etc., we can make a substantial change in our environment.

We should not compromise with it and make our children practice it from their childhood so that they grow up as a responsible person who knows how to lead a healthy life. This habit should be inculcated by the parents in their children as the parents, especially the mother helps in shaping their child and his personality in the right way.

Why are we still insensitive to the issue when we know that cleanliness is another form of God? Many serious health hazards can arise, including harming the environment in the form of pollution. In dirty surroundings, germs are spread around which we cannot see with our naked eyes and we cannot even imagine how fast the number of microbes grow. If pollution increases in our environment, then it will cause diseases like asthma, cancer, chest pain, lung infection, due to which the person is sure to die.

So this is the right time to wake up the public consciousness to keep it clean, so that we can protect our environment and save the lives of hundreds of people who die due to unhealthy environment.

Cleanliness of the body is necessary for physical health. Dirt and disease go together. Not only the regular washing of hands and face, but the frequent and thorough bathing of the whole body, and wearing clean clothes, are conditions of good health.

To keep our house and neighbourhood clean is our utmost obligation as it is the only remedy available for national health and hygiene. Dirt and refuse are the causes of sickness and sufferings, which ultimately give rise to diseases and epidemics. Plagues and epidemics that set in are called by filthy and insanitary hygienic conditions. So it is a prime duty of every citizen to ensure that public places and our surroundings are not littered.

A great percentage of our population lives below the poverty line. Slums in metropolitan areas are inhabited by these poor people, most of them have migrated from villages. Unable to earn a decent means of living, they live in huts having no proper sanitation or drinking water.

The uneducated people need to be instructed in civics and cleaning surroundings. Cleanliness of body leads to the cleanliness of mind, and thereby to the soul.

Therefore, in order to prevent such cases the people of India should focus on maintaining cleanliness, which will help our country earn a respectable place in the eyes, souls, hearts and minds of the foreigners paying a visit to our country.

And, if every Indian citizen contributes to even some extent towards this Swachh Bharat Abhiyan then we cannot imagine how effective it will prove to be towards fulfilling the aim of this campaign. As you all know that our school has joined hands with other schools in the area for Clean Delhi Campaign, it has been considered appropriate to kick start this campaign right from our own institution where we as students will also get the encouragement to maintain cleanliness around us. But before we talk any further on this topic, let’s first understand what cleanliness is all about?

The term ‘cleanliness’ implies absence of dust, dirt, garbage, foul smell, stains, etc. You must have realized that most Indian places whether it’s a lane, street, railway station, government office, hospital or a bus stop look unclean and unpleasant to our eyes. In addition, the littered garbage, defaced walls and overflowing sewage result in the spread of diseases and clogging of water on the roads, which further aggravate the situation. The death toll rises as more and more people succumb to the diseases and die in the absence of proper treatment and care.

So to avoid this crisis, the natives of our country should put efforts towards maintaining cleanliness not only in their homes and working places, but in their surroundings too. A hygienic and clean environment creates happy souls and a fulfilling life. There is a famous idiom that says charity begins at home, likewise cleanliness of a city; village or town should first begin from people’s homes.

In fact, villages have become proactive in order to ensure cleanliness of their environment and hygiene of people inhabiting those villages. Other than public toilets, personal toilets too have been constructed in order to avoid defecation at open places. In fact, effective measures are being taken up for managing dirty water and solid waste. So when village folks are putting in concerted efforts, why we people living in well-developed cities should lag behind in this campaign? Please understand that cleanliness is as essential to human existence as oxygen, water and food. Also, it’s a foundation of discipline and hallmark of success because if a person can’t keep himself/herself and the immediate surrounding organized and clean, then how he/she would contribute towards the success of others. It’s not possible to maintain a healthy relationship with people in the absence of a clean environment. At least, a minimal level of cleanliness such as taking shower regularly, washing your hands after using toilet, protecting your feet from dust, throwing garbage in the dustbin, etc is expected from everyone.

Cleanliness is monumentally important and must be practiced daily. If we will keep ourselves and our surroundings clean, it will help in nation building exercise too because it will then encourage more and more foreign tourists to visit our land and appreciate its beauty, nature and living surroundings. Of course, no one wants to visit a foul land. So adopt a lifestyle and nurture a surrounding where there is no threat to nature and the living beings and everyone can live in a harmonious co-existence.

Sen. Katie Britt attempts to clean up her misleading State of the Union response

Alabama GOP Sen. Katie Britt on Sunday responded to allegations that her response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address was misleading.

The criticism centers on a story Britt told about a victim of human trafficking, which she implied happened during Biden’s tenure.

Britt spoke in her Thursday-night speech about visiting the U.S.-Mexico border in 2023 and speaking to this woman.

“She had been sex-trafficked by the cartels starting at age 12. She told me not just that she was raped every day, but how many times a day she was raped,” Britt said in her response to the State of the Union.

“We wouldn’t be OK with this happening in a Third World country. This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it,” she added. “President Biden’s border crisis is a disgrace.”

Shortly after the address, a viral social media post by journalist Jonathan Katz looked more closely at the story and noted that the trafficking did not happen during Biden’s presidency, or even in the United States; it happened during the administration of President George W. Bush, in Mexico.

On “Fox News Sunday,” Britt did not acknowledge making any mistake or leaving a wrong impression.

She was asked whether she meant to give the impression that the story she told about a victim of human trafficking happened during Biden’s tenure.

“No,” Britt answered, adding later: “I very clearly said I spoke to a woman who told me about when she was trafficked when she was 12, so I didn’t say a teenager. I didn’t say a young woman, a grown woman, a woman when she was trafficked when she was 12.”

She doubled down on her Thursday statement that Biden “didn’t just create this border crisis. He invited it with 94 executive actions in his first 100 days.”

“I very specifically said this is what President Biden did during his first 100 days. Minutes after coming into office he stopped all deportations, he halted construction of the border wall,” she said Sunday. (The Biden administration attempted to institute a 100-day pause on mass deportations after taking office, but that moratorium was later halted by a judge .)

Though Britt did not offer the victim’s name in her speech Thursday, a spokesperson for her office told The Washington Post that she was referring to Karla Jacinto Romero, a trafficking victims’ rights advocate who testified before Congress in 2015 about what happened to her as a girl.

Britt’s office did not respond to a request for comment from NBC News on Saturday.

The White House shot back at the Republican senator, accusing Britt of relying on “debunked lies” to attack Biden.

“Instead of telling more debunked lies to justify opposing the toughest bipartisan border legislation in modern history, Senator Britt should stop choosing human smugglers and fentanyl traffickers over our national security and the Border Patrol Union,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates said in a statement. “Like President Biden said in his State of the Union, ‘We have a simple choice: We can fight about fixing the border or we can fix it.’”

In her 2015 congressional testimony, Jacinto Romero told lawmakers through an interpreter, “For more than four years of my life from the age of 12 ... I fell prey to a professional pimp who, after three months of wooing and me treating me as a princess, propped me up on a corner and forced me to work the streets for his own gain. For years and years, I was coerced, intimidated, threatened, beaten, robbed of my children and emotionally and sexually violated time and time again.”

Jacinto Romero was 22 at the time of her testimony, meaning the experience she described began roughly a decade earlier.

Britt met Jacinto Romero in January 2023 during a trip to the Del Rio sector of the U.S.-Mexico border, where she was accompanied by Fox News contributor Sara Carter, former Mexican politician and victims advocate Rosa María de la Garza Ramírez, and GOP Sens. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi.

On an episode of “The Sara Carter Show” released the same day as the trip, Carter said she introduced Jacinto Romero to the senators, telling listeners, “She talked very vividly and candidly with lawmakers ... about what was happening to her, about people buying her.”

Republicans have long criticized Biden’s handling of the border, arguing that the president has been ineffective at stopping the rampant migrant crossings along the southern border. The Biden administration has countered that Congress has been unwilling to step up to the plate since the bipartisan border deal fell apart , and the president is reportedly considering taking executive action to deter migration.

The kitchen was among several elements of her speech that drew criticism ranging from baffled to mocking — not just from Democrats, but from Republicans who said the setting undermined Britt’s stature as a senator and questioned her halting, theatrical delivery. The speech swiftly began drawing jokes and parodies .

“Senator Katie Britt is a very impressive person,” conservative commentator Alyssa Farah Griffin wrote on X . “I do not understand the decision to put her in a *KITCHEN* for one of the most important speeches she’s ever given.”

“This speech is not what we need,” said Charlie Kirk, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA. “Joe Biden just declared war on the American right and Katie Britt is talking like she’s hosting a cooking show.”

Britt, a 42-year-old freshman senator with longtime experience on Capitol Hill, was chosen to deliver the rebuttal as a figure representative of the next generation of congressional Republicans. She also focused on immigration, crime and the economy and sought to remind viewers of Biden’s age.

A senator from Alabama and a mother, she was also a clear choice for delivering the message to viewers that Republicans support IVF — days after the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that frozen embryos should be considered children, a move that sparked a national backlash for its threat to in vitro fertilization procedures. In her speech, Britt did not defend the ruling but instead tried to reassure viewers that Republicans support IVF, without noting that dozens of GOP lawmakers have backed a bill that would define life as beginning “at conception” without protections for IVF.

But with her performance, during which her dramatic tones and pauses appeared to differ from her usual way of speaking, she joined the ranks of speakers whose State of the Union responses have gone down in history as missteps. In 2009, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was panned for his response to President Barack Obama’s speech. And in 2013, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) memorably sipped bottled water during his rebuttal.

“Not sure whose genius idea it was to put a U.S. Senator in the kitchen to deliver the response to the [State of the Union],” Republican pollster Christine Matthews said in a social media post Friday morning.

Matthews noted that, in panels she has conducted over the past decade with women swing voters, ads featuring women speaking about health care in the kitchen “just sets women voters off.”

“Instead of the relatable look they were going for here — given the rollback of reproductive rights and the IVF fiasco — it sends the message that Republicans are literally trying to send women back to the kitchen,” Matthews added.

A spokesman for Britt did not immediately respond to a request from The Washington Post. Some members of Britt’s party praised her performance, including Donald Trump , the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, who applauded her on Truth Social, writing, “Great job Katie!”

“Katie Britt was a GREAT contrast to an Angry, and obviously very Disturbed, ‘President,’” Trump wrote .

This was the third consecutive year that Republicans chose a woman to give the rebuttal, and showing viewers a young White mother at home appeared to be a clear strategy targeting female voters. An ally of Britt’s sent talking points to conservatives suggesting reactions to the speech before it occurred, the New York Times reported , in a memo that suggested that Britt “came off like America’s mom — she gets it.”

In his post, Trump made sure to point out that Britt “was compassionate and caring, especially concerning Women and Women’s Issues.” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) highlighted Britt’s address as “speaking directly to parents and families across the nation.”

Many concluded that the tactic had not worked. Griffin, speaking on CNN, said it was “confusing” to women watching.

“Women can be both wives and mothers and also stateswomen,” Griffin said. “So to put her in a kitchen, not in front of a podium or in the Senate chamber, where she was elected after winning a hard-fought race, I think fell very flat.”

Meanwhile, Democrats called out GOP stances on reproductive rights and other women’s issues, which Britt defended in her speech. Many pointed out Thursday the irony of Britt decrying the reported sexual assault and trafficking of a woman whose story she told in the speech, while having endorsed Trump, who was found by a jury to have sexually abused and raped writer E. Jean Carroll.

“Sen Katie Britt says sexual assault is the worst thing that can happen to a woman while encouraging Americans to vote for a convicted sexual predator,” Shannon Watts, founder of the gun-control group Moms Demand Action, wrote on X .

Democrats also noted that, under Alabama’s abortion ban — one of the strictest in the country, with no exceptions for rape or incest — a rape victim would be forced to carry their rapist’s baby to term.

And while Britt was highly critical of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, Democrats pointed out that she was among the Republican senators who helped negotiate a bipartisan border security deal — but then ultimately voted against it after Trump signaled to congressional Republicans that no immigration policy should pass during the election year.

Meanwhile, some Republicans worried that the speech hadn’t had its intended effect in reaching female voters, particularly in suburban swing districts.

Allie Beth Stuckey, host of the Christian conservative podcast “Relatable,” praised the kitchen setting but called the speech “a real missed opportunity.” She noted on X that Britt was in the difficult spot of needing to seem relatable, likable, and “happy, but not too happy … upset, but not too emotional.”

“But the delivery was parody-level terrible,” Stuckey said , “and I promise that didn’t sway any of those suburban moms we’re trying to reach.”

Former President Donald J. Trump , at an event on Saturday ostensibly meant to boost his preferred candidate in Ohio’s Republican Senate primary race, gave a freewheeling speech in which he used dehumanizing language to describe immigrants, maintained a steady stream of insults and vulgarities and predicted that the United States would never have another election if he did not win in November.

With his general-election matchup against President Biden in clear view, Mr. Trump once more doubled down on the doomsday vision of the country that has animated his third presidential campaign and energized his base during the Republican primary.

The dark view resurfaced throughout his speech. While discussing the U.S. economy and its auto industry, Mr. Trump promised to place tariffs on cars manufactured abroad if he won in November. He added: “Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a blood bath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a blood bath for the country.”

For nearly 90 minutes outside the Dayton International Airport in Vandalia, Ohio, Mr. Trump delivered a discursive speech, replete with attacks and caustic rhetoric. He noted several times that he was having difficulty reading the teleprompter.

The former president opened his speech by praising the people serving sentences in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the Capitol. Mr. Trump, who faces criminal charges tied to his efforts to overturn his election loss, called them “hostages” and “unbelievable patriots,” commended their spirit and vowed to help them if elected in November. He also repeated his false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, which have been discredited by a mountain of evidence .

If he did not win this year’s presidential election, Mr. Trump said, “I don’t think you’re going to have another election, or certainly not an election that’s meaningful.”

Mr. Trump also stoked fears about the influx of migrants coming into the United States at the southern border. As he did during his successful campaign in 2016, Mr. Trump used incendiary and dehumanizing language to cast many migrants as threats to American citizens.

He asserted, without evidence, that other countries were emptying their prisons of “young people” and sending them across the border. “I don’t know if you call them ‘people,’ in some cases,” he said. “They’re not people, in my opinion.” He later referred to them as “animals.”

Border officials, including some who worked in the Trump administration, have said that most migrants who cross the border are members of vulnerable families fleeing violence and poverty, and available data does not support the idea that migrants are spurring increases in crime.

Mr. Trump mentioned Bernie Moreno, his preferred Senate candidate in Ohio and a former car dealer from Cleveland, only sparingly. Though he has Mr. Trump’s endorsement, Mr. Moreno, whose super PAC hosted Saturday’s event, has struggled to separate himself in a heated Republican primary contest to face Senator Sherrod Brown, Democrat of Ohio, this fall. Mr. Trump was redirected from a planned trip to Arizona to appear with Mr. Moreno as a last-minute push.

Mr. Trump issued vulgar and derogatory remarks about a number of Democrats, including ones he often targets, like Mr. Biden and Fani Willis, the Atlanta prosecutor overseeing his criminal case in Georgia, as well as those widely viewed as prospective future presidential candidates, such as Gov. Gavin Newsom of California and Gov. J.B. Pritzker of Illinois.

Mr. Trump called Mr. Biden a “stupid president” several times and at one point referred to him as a “dumb son of a — ” before trailing off. He also compared Ms. Willis’s first name to a vulgarity, called Mr. Newsom “Gavin New-scum” and took jabs at Mr. Pritzker’s physical appearance.

The Biden campaign issued a statement after the event claiming that Mr. Trump’s comments doubled “down on threats of political violence.”

“He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge,” said James Singer, a spokesman for the Biden campaign.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Mr. Trump, clarified that Mr. Trump was talking about the auto industry and the economy, not political violence, and wrote in a statement that “Crooked Joe Biden and his campaign are engaging in deceptively, out-of-context editing.”

Mr. Trump’s sharp words were not reserved for national politicians: He briefly took aim at one of Mr. Moreno’s primary opponents, Matt Dolan, a wealthy Ohio state senator who has been surging in recent polls. Returning to his prepared remarks, Mr. Trump said he did not know Mr. Dolan but depicted him as “trying to become the next Mitt Romney.”

“My attitude is anybody who changes the name from the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians should not be a senator,” Mr. Trump said, referring to the professional baseball team that Mr. Dolan’s family holds a majority stake in.

When Mr. Moreno was briefly called back onstage toward the end of Mr. Trump’s remarks, he praised the former president as a “good man.” But Mr. Moreno did not explicitly remind the crowd to support him in his Senate bid on Tuesday. Mr. Trump, for his part, said Mr. Moreno was a “fantastic guy.”

Mr. Trump’s campaign speeches generally swing between scripted remarks and seemingly off-the-cuff digressions. On Saturday, he acknowledged struggling to read the teleprompter as he tried to quote statistics on inflation.

“Everything is up: Chicken’s up, bread is up and I can’t read this damn teleprompter,” Mr. Trump said. “This sucker is moving around. It’s like reading a moving flag in a 35-mile-an-hour wind.”

Then, Mr. Trump, who before his presidency was known in New York for refusing to pay his bills to a wide range of service providers, joked about not paying the teleprompter company.

“Then they say Trump’s a bad guy, because I’ll say this: Don’t pay the teleprompter company,” he said as the crowd laughed. “Don’t pay.”

Katie Britt’s Republican response to Joe Biden’s State of the Union address drew reactions ranging from the baffled to the satirical to the appalled, even among fellow rightwingers.

“What the hell am I watching right now?” an unnamed Trump adviser told Rolling Stone.

“It’s one of our biggest disasters ever,” another unnamed Republican strategist told the Daily Beast.

Delivering the official State of the Union response can be a thankless task, as the former Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal and the Florida senator Marco Rubio , deliverers of previously panned speeches, would ruefully attest.

Nonetheless, the 42-year-old Alabama senator is a rising Republican star, widely respected on Capitol Hill and her selection to respond to Biden was a golden opportunity to introduce herself to the wider American electorate.

In his address Biden used his bully pulpit effectively, attacking Republicans in a fiery speech and inviting a strong response . But Britt’s speech, delivered with overt theatricality, oscillating in tone between the wholesome and the wholly horrific, did not land well even in her own party.

Charlie Kirk, founder of the far-right Turning Point USA youth group, said : “I’m sure Katie Britt is a sweet mom and person, but this speech is not what we need. Joe Biden just declared war on the American right and Katie Britt is talking like she’s hosting a cooking show, whispering about how Democrats ‘dont get it’.”

That pointed to widespread confusion over the setting for such a figure to give such an important speech: a kitchen.

As a Gallup poll showed 57% of American voters think the US would be better off if more women were in elected office, Alyssa Farah Griffin, a Trump aide turned never-Trumper, said : “Senator Katie Britt is a very impressive person … I do not understand the decision to put her in a KITCHEN for one of the most important speeches she’s ever given.”

Speaking to CNN, Griffin added : “The staging of this was bizarre to me. Women can be both wives and mothers and also stateswomen, so to put her in a kitchen, not at a podium or in the Senate chamber where she was elected after running a hard-fought race, I think fell very flat and was completely confusing to some women watching it.”

Allie Beth Stuckey , host of the Relatable podcast, which “analyses culture, news and politics from a biblical perspective”, said : “Ok, GOP. Never again. I know y’all were going for the relatable mom speaking in her kitchen from her heart, but it didn’t work. Just a straight, strong speech will do in the future. Thanks.”

Kirk asked followers if they liked the speech. Blue-ticked conservative verdicts included “Man, it was so disappointing”, “No, very babysitter-reading-a-bedtime story-like”, “way too dramatic”, and “the up and down emotion was bizarre”.

Among satirical responses, Tom Nichols, an anti-Trump conservative columnist, spoke for many when he said : “There is no way that this Katie Britt address does not end up as part of the Saturday Night Live cold open.”

Elsewhere, the gonzo filmmaker Tom Arnold said : “Katie Britt is so bad she couldn’t be in one of my movies.”

Julia Ioffe, Washington correspondent for Puck News, said : “Imagine you’re sleeping over at a friend’s house and you get up in the middle of the night to pee and you hear a weird sound so you follow it to the kitchen, where your friend’s mom is drunk, crying, and rambling about the national debt. Those are the vibes from Katie Britt right now.”

From the other side of the political spectrum, however, the gun control advocate Shannon Watts highlighted a darker side to Britt’s performance, as expressed in a particularly lurid passage.

With wavering voice, the senator described meeting a migrant woman who she said described being “sex trafficked by the cartels starting at the age of 12” and who, Britt said, spoke of being repeatedly raped “on a mattress in a shoebox of a room”.

Watts said : “Senator Katie Britt says sexual assault is the worst thing that can happen to a woman while encouraging Americans to vote for a convicted sexual predator.”

Last month, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, was ordered to pay $83.3m in a civil defamation case arising from a rape allegation a judge said was “substantially true”. Accused of sexual assault or misconduct by more than 20 other women, Trump also faces trial this month on 34 charges arising from hush-money payments to an adult film star who claimed an affair.

Britt endorsed Trump last December.

Biden says Schumer's concerns on Israel are shared by many Americans

W ASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday that Chuck Schumer made a "good speech" the previous day in which the Senate majority leader called for new elections in Israel and harshly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an obstacle to peace.

"He made a good speech," Biden said in the White House's Oval Office, when asked by reporters asked about Schumer's remarks on the Senate floor on Thursday.

"He expressed serious concerns, shared not only by him but by many Americans," Biden said, adding that his staff were notified about the speech in advance by Schumer.
