Unbounded : Preliminary Studies in Algorithmic Choreography - CASSIEL GAUBE + T.H. + P.A.R.T.S. - TUE FEBRUARY 27, 2024

For this year’s X-week of artistic practice, PARTS invited Cassiel Gaube to work with the 39 Bachelor Training students. During this week, they will explore how a seemingly infinite variety of choreographic compositions can be created using a limited number of rules. Through experimentation with these tools, a series of choreographic sketches emerge. The result of this intensive one-week workshop is shown at Concertgebouw Brugge, in the frame of the Festival Bits of Dance.

P.A.R.T.S. is an international school for contemporary dance and choreography based in Brussels, Belgium. P.A.R.T.S. is an artistic project, inspired by the multifaceted artistic practice of its founder and director Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and other choreographers. P.A.R.T.S. provides a thorough education for dancers and choreographers to become independent and creative artists.

P.A.R.T.S. is a full-time curriculum with two independent programs: the bachelor training program (three years) and the master STUDIOS program (two years).

BA Training is a professional education for dancers and choreographers, offering the theoretical and practical fundamentals of contemporary dance and the typical P.A.R.T.S.-approach, which consists of a focus on physical conscience, the development of creative and compositional skills, a training in drama and music, and theoretical reflection. A cycle starts every three years, in 2022, then in 2025.

MA STUDIOS targets choreographers and dance-makers who want to develop their creative voice and practice, in a learning environment that is communal and collaborative. The program consists of self-directed research, movement research workshops, choreography masterclasses, theoretical seminars, dance classes, and projects fostering cross-cultural thinking and creation. The program finishes with a written thesis and end-of-studies creations with public presentations. The cycle starts every three years, in 2022, then in 2025.

Digital Program: The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988

Anne teresa de keersmaeker / pavel kolesnikov / rosas, the goldberg variations, bwv 988.

The  Goldberg Variations  belong to Bach’s late period. The composer pushes the boundaries of musical themes in a play of variations, canons and fugues. For this composition, he started from a simple and quiet melody, joined with an underlying bass line, which steadily unfolds into a musical cosmos that reveals itself with extraordinary variety and unparalleled complexity.

Together with pianists Pavel Kolesnikov and Alain Franco, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker continues her journey with Bach in dialogue with these variations. After working with a large dance ensemble for The Six Brandenburg Concertos  (2019), her previous choreography to music by Bach, De Keersmaeker creates a solo for herself. In this piece, she stays true to the same principle of the musical score as the blueprint for choreography.

Including an aria and no less than thirty variations, Bach’s Goldberg Variations challenges the choreographer to a similar exercise: to find a form of dance capable of adaptation and flexibility while retaining an immutable core. To De Keersmaeker, it is above all an invitation to consolidate the road she travelled so far as an artist, addressing today’s pressing questions in her ongoing search for a personal choreographic idiom.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

the performing arts research and training studios

Anee Teresa De Keersmaeker

In 1980, after studying dance at Mudra School in Brussels and Tisch School of the Arts in New York, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (1960) created Asch , her first choreographic work. Two years later came the premiere of Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich. De Keersmaeker established the dance company Rosas in Brussels in 1983, while creating the work Rosas danst Rosas. Since these breakthrough pieces, her choreography has been grounded in a rigorous and prolific exploration of the relationship between dance and music. She has created with Rosas a wide-ranging body of work engaging the musical structures and scores of several periods, from early music to contemporary and popular idioms. Her choreographic practice also draws formal principles from geometry, numerical patterns, the natural world, and social structures to offer a unique perspective on the body’s articulation in space and time. In 1995 De Keersmaeker established the school P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels in association with De Munt/La Monnaie.

Pavel Kolesnikov

Following his seven-concert residency at the Aldeburgh Festival and sixth appearance at the BBC Proms this summer, the 2023/24 season sees Pavel Kolesnikov perform twice with the with the Danish National Symphony (with Susanna Mälkki and Manfred Honeck), debut with Cincinnati Symphony and Netherlands Philharmonic (both with Sir Mark Elder) and embark on a recital tour of North America. He also returns to the Philharmonia Orchestra (Santtu-Matias Rouvali), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (Vasily Petrenko), Klavier Festival Ruhr and to Wigmore Hall where he was Artist-in-Residence during 2020/21.

Pavel is known for his cross-genre collaborations and narrative programmes. Recent examples include Celestial Navigation – a sequence of music featuring projections by architect Sophie Hicks and text by Martin Crimp – and his realisation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations with dancer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker which has been staged over fifty times across Europe. Pavel also regularly performs with pianist Samson and the duo’s Carnegie Hall debut this season follows recent dates at Amsterdam’s Muziekgebouw, London’s Southbank and Barbican centres – the latter as part of Europe’s first-ever Classical Pride.

Pavel won the Honens International Piano Competition in 2012 and was a BBC New Generation Artist between 2014-16. He has since worked with all the BBC orchestras, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, The Hallé, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orquestra Simfónica de Barcelona, City of Birmingham Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony and Stavanger Symphony among others. He regularly gives recitals at Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Park Avenue Armoury, La Roque-d’Anthéron, Konzerthaus Berlin, Piano aux Jacobins Festival and De Singel.

Pavel’s discography for Hyperion includes albums of music by Reynaldo Hahn, Louis Couperin and Chopin.

Performing Arts Research and Training Studios explained

P.A.R.T.S. - Performing Arts Research and Training Studios is an international school for contemporary dance that is located in Vorst , one of the 19 municipalities located in the Brussels -Capital Region of Belgium.

P.A.R.T.S School for Contemporary Dance was founded in 1995 by the Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Bernard Foccroulle , then director of the national opera De Munt . They initiated P.A.R.T.S. to fill the gap in professional training for contemporary dance. [1] Their intention was to provide a pedagogical anchor for contemporary dance in Belgium, which had started in the early 1980s and had seen a quick and strong development since then. At that time, there were only a few institutions in Europe that resolutely focused on these new artistic developments. [2]

"At that time, contemporary Belgian dance was already internationally well-respected. But there was no longer a school to pass along that experience. That's why De Keersmaeker decided to set up P.A.R.T.S.”, said deputy director Theo Van Rompay in an interview in 2012. [3] In 1988, Maurice Béjart 's dance school Mudra in Brussels had closed. In 1992, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker became the choreographer-in-residence at the national opera De Munt and one of her ambitions was to answer the lack of educational possibilities for contemporary dance. Prior to the start of P.A.R.T.S. in 1995, Rosas, the dance company of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, and De Munt had already been organizing a dance course for students from different countries for a couple of years. With P.A.R.T.S., they wanted to give that dance education a permanent character. [4]

Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker expressed the philosophy, ambition and spirit of P.A.R.T.S. as follows: “I cannot teach anyone to dance. One learns to dance oneself. But perhaps I can give them a desire, an experience, create a space for challenges.” [5]

The first generation of P.A.R.T.S. students graduated in 1998, a group of dancers and choreographers who immediately found work in the main dance companies or attracted public and critical attention with their own creations. [2]

When P.A.R.T.S. marked its 20th anniversary in 2015, the school announced that approximately 860 students, teachers and staff had been involved with the school since its start in 1995. [1] P.A.R.T.S. and HES-SO/Manufacture, the High School of Performing Arts that is part of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (Lausanne), are 2013-2017 partner institutions for higher education in contemporary dance. [6]

Pedagogical curriculum

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker was inspired by Mudra, where she had been a student herself, and which had moved with Béjart to Switzerland. [2] "Mudra was accommodated in an enormous hangar where also the Ballet of the 20th Century (Note: the company of choreographer Maurice Béjart ) rehearsed. The idea of the choreographer was to train dancers who would have a look at other disciplines. Among the teachers, there were great people like Fernand Schirren (rhythm and percussion) and Alfons Goris (theatre acting). It was a gathering place for young people from all over the world, a meeting place for different generations of dancers and choreographers. There was both rigor and anarchy. It was a crucial place for me." [7] As Mudra shared its housing with the Ballet of the 20th century, today P.A.R.T.S. shares its accommodation with Rosas and Ictus, the contemporary music ensemble. Mudra teacher Fernand Schirren even became one of the teachers at P.A.R.T.S.. And like Mudra, P.A.R.T.S. has become a meeting place for different generations of dancers and choreographers from all over the world.

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker designed the pedagogical curriculum of P.A.R.T.S.. Originally, the program lasted three years. This changed in 2000, when some changes were made and the program was extended, with the option to specialize as a dancer or as a choreographer. [8] The pedagogical curriculum currently consists of two independent parts (called cycles). The first part is the Training Cycle which lasts three years and forms the basis of the course. [9] The second part is the subsequent Research Studios , which lasts two years. [10]

During the program, much attention is paid to the repertoire of Rosas, the dance company of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Each year students learn one complete Rosas choreography. In addition, the repertoire of other contemporary choreographers is addressed, such as Pina Bausch, William Forsythe and Trisha Brown .

International renown

P.A.R.T.S. has achieved international renown with its students and teachers from more than twenty countries, mainly Europe and the United States. [11]

However, at its founding in 1995, the influential French critic Jean-Marc Adolphe claimed that the idea for the school was not good and that it would only be a training college for Rosas. Six years later, he revised his opinion. Together with Alain Crombecque, director of the Festival d’Automne, he invited the school for a one-month stay at the Théâtre de la Bastille and the Théâtre du Rond-Point in Paris. According to Alain Crombecque they considered the activity carried out by P.A.R.T.S. since 1995 in Brussels as exemplary, and they considered it important to testify about it in France. [12] This initiative was repeated during the 2010 edition of the Festival d’Automne. [13] [14]

The P.A.R.T.S. students regularly present their work to the audience. They do not only do this at the P.A.R.T.S. studios in Brussels, but also at wide range of theatres and art centres in Belgium and abroad (amongst others at the Kaaitheater [15] in Brussels, Vooruit [16] and CAMPO [17] in Ghent , DE Studio [18] and Monty [19] in Antwerp , STUK [20] in Leuven , De Brakke Grond [21] in Amsterdam, PACT Zollverein [22] in Essen , Plac Wolnosci/ Malta Festival in Poznan and Mimar Sinan University Bomonti Campus in Istanbul [23] [24] ).

In 2010, P.A.R.T.S. received the Silver Lion for Dance at the 7th International Festival of Contemporary Dance of the Venice Biennale . The jury awarded P.A.R.T.S. the prize for its study program. [25] The motivation of the Silver Lion award reads as follows: “Instituted rather recently (1995), the P.A.R.T.S acquired immediate recognition throughout Europe as a center of pedagogical innovation, with a complete and intensive program of studies in which the most advanced techniques of contemporary dance dialogue with other artistic disciplines, in particular with theatre and music. A laboratory of movement which focuses not only on the development of the dancer’s skills, but on his search for artistic identity as well.” [26] [27] [28] [29] [30]

Some well-known alumni who graduated from P.A.R.T.S., are: [31]

The school currently receives additional funding from the netwerk [DNA] Departures and Arrivals , that is co-financed by the European Commission (Creative Europe Program). [36] Between 2001 and 2014 the school received additional funding from the DÉPARTS, that was also co-financed by the European Commission. [37]

Review: These Rites of Spring Push Back at Ruthlessness

The South African choreographer and dancer Dada Masilo’s “The Sacrifice,” at the Joyce Theater, responds to Pina Bausch.

Five dancers with one, in the middle, closer to the camera. That’s Dada Masilo. All the dancers have one arm raised. Behind them is a projection of tangled branches.

By Siobhan Burke

Over the past decade, the South African choreographer Dada Masilo has become internationally known and respected for her bold, socially conscious adaptations of canonical ballets like “Giselle” and “Swan Lake.” With her current touring production, “The Sacrifice” (2021), she responds to source material that is a bit more contemporary but carries just as much historical weight: Pina Bausch’s “The Rite of Spring,” which Bausch choreographed in 1975 to Stravinsky’s groundbreaking 1913 score. (The music originally accompanied Nijinsky’s earth-pounding modernist choreography, a pairing that caused a riot at the ballet’s Paris premiere.)

In a program note for “The Sacrifice,” which opened at the Joyce Theater on Tuesday, Masilo explains that she first encountered Bausch’s “Rite” as a student at the Performing Arts Research and Training Studios, or P.A.R.T.S., the prestigious Brussels dance academy. She describes feeling intrigued by the ballet’s rhythmic complexity and wanting to explore its themes of ritual and sacrifice through Tswana, a dance form of her own heritage, traditional to Botswana. “I want to create a story that is deeper than a chosen maiden dancing herself to death,” she writes.

Bausch’s “Rite” is famous for its bracing, uncompromising brutality. After its New York premiere in 1984, critics commented on its utter grimness; Anna Kisselgoff, writing in The New York Times, and Deborah Jowitt, in The Village Voice, both used the phrase “ no promise of rebirth .” It ends with the sacrificial virgin falling to an unequivocal death. Lights out.

“The Sacrifice” tells an impassioned but more nuanced, winding story — if not necessarily a deeper one — riding peaks and valleys of joy and mourning, dotted with humor. In place of Stravinsky’s score is music by Ann Masina, Leroy Mapholo, Tiale Makhene and Nathi Shongwe, gorgeously performed live by all but Makhene, and with the addition of Mpho Mothiba. Their compositions take cues from “Rite,” particularly in Mapholo’s startling violin and Mothiba’s invigorating percussion. But they also go their own way, with a warmth that emanates especially from Masina’s formidable singing.

The 65-minute work begins with a solo for Masilo, topless in a long, flowing skirt. Her slow trajectory across the stage contrasts with the rapid, searching motion of her arms, a kind of precise but agitated scribbling that will return again and again, reminiscent of the tangled tree branches projected as a backdrop.

A rush of energy follows the introspective opening, as more dancers arrive, joining together in full-bodied, undulatory movement that integrates the fast-paced, stamping footwork of Tswana. (The Joyce stage at times felt too small.) At one point they form a semicircle around Masilo as if to celebrate her. In the work’s most lighthearted passage, they directly address the musicians, who play from corner at the front of the stage. “Why are you going so fast?” a dancer asks. “Can we please have an adagio, so we can breathe?” Masilo adds. It takes a few tries, but the adagio comes.

In this way and others, Masilo seems to be pushing back against the ruthlessness of “Rite.” While she does play the role of a “chosen one,” she doesn’t go without a struggle, and her send-off is long and compassionate. Handed a white lily, she leaves it on the floor and exits. When three men in white later surround her, she falls into their arms but also pries herself away. Eventually, she is delivered into the embrace of Masina, who sings an anguished song while gently guiding her to the ground. The other dancers, now also dressed in white, bow before her.

While emotionally resonant at times and full of beautiful dancing — Eutychia Rakaki and Lwando Dutyulwa gave especially vibrant performances — “The Sacrifice” often feels confused in its tone and structure. Masilo has spoken about her love of narrative, but the storytelling here lacks the dramatic stakes and piercing clarity that make other versions of “Rite,” like Bausch’s, so gripping. Perhaps that sort of comparison isn’t entirely fruitful, though. Masilo set out to create something different, and in that sense, her “Sacrifice” is a success.

Stepping Into the World of Dance

The choreographer Emma Portner, who has spent her career mixing genres and disciplines , comes to ballet with an eye on its sometimes calcified gender relations.

In Irish dance, precision is prized. But perfection is beside the point at Gayli , a series of L.G.B.T.Q.-friendly ceili classes during March at Mary’s Bar, a queer Irish pub in Brooklyn.

A childhood encounter with an American soldier in Iraq led Hussein Smko to become a dancer. Now the artist performs on New York stages .

“Deep River” is in many ways an apt title for a dance work by Alonzo King, a choreographer fixated on flow .

Robert Garland has held many positions at Dance Theater of Harlem over many years. At long last, he has caught the most prized title: artistic director .

Alexei Ratmansky, arguably the most important ballet choreographer today, has stepped into a new role at New York City Ballet  with a deeply personal first work  that reflected his Ukrainian roots.

While Santillan’s research has spanned across the field of reproductive science, she has a particular interest in the deadly diseases of pregnancy, including preeclampsia and its intergenerational effects. She designed and directs the Women’s Health Tissue Repository. Santillan’s work has been cited more than 2,700 times, and she has mentored 114 early career scientists and students, a testament to her expansive impact.

“Dr. Santillan has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering the professional and personal development of trainees in research, including myself,” said Banu Gumusoglu, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. “Her mentorship extends beyond the confines of traditional academic settings, touching the lives of many aspiring trainees from high school through residency, clinical fellowship, and faculty levels.”

Stephen Warren

Stephen Warren , professor of history and American studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), received the Distinguished Achievement in Publicly Engaged Research Award . The award recognizes an individual faculty member who has put addressing public needs and direct engagement with the public, in the service of improving quality of life through research, at the forefront of his or her academic activities.

A prolific scholar of Native American culture, Warren’s research has centered on the Shawnee people of Oklahoma for the past two decades. He has published four books and co-authored the most recent one , Replanting Cultures: Community-Engaged Scholarship in Indian Country, with Chief Benjamin Barnes of the Shawnee Tribe.

“Over the last two decades, Professor Warren has established himself as a leading community-engaged scholar, and his achievements in research and publishing demonstrate that community engagement and strong scholarship are not mutually exclusive,” said Nick Benson, director of the Office of Community Engagement. “Professor Warren’s work serves as an inspiration for researchers at Iowa and nationally who seek not only to make a difference in academia, but also in our communities.”

Kaveh Akbar

Kaveh Akbar , associate professor of English in CLAS, received the Distinguished Achievement in Arts and Humanities Research Award . This award honors distinguished achievement in humanities scholarship and work in the creative, visual and performing arts.

Akbar joined Iowa in 2022 to serve as the director of the English and creative writing major. In January, his new novel, Martyr!, was published to critical acclaim. Akbar previously published two prize-winning poetry collections and has served as poetry editor for The Nation  since 2021.

“Akbar’s leadership in the profession and on campus continues: his transformative work in our department not only enriches the academic experiences of 700+ English and creative writing majors, but also enhances the profile of UI as ‘The Writing University,’” said Blaine Greteman, professor and departmental executive officer of the Department of English.

Cara Hamann

Cara Hamann , associate professor of epidemiology, received the Faculty Communicating ideas Award . This award recognizes excellence in communication about research and scholarship in the sciences and humanities and the study of creative, visual, and performing arts to a general audience directly or via print and electronic media.

Hamann has frequently shared her work on transportation issues, including teen driving, bike and scooter safety, and pedestrian safety, through peer-reviewed journals and extensive media outreach. Her recent op-ed, “The most deadly traffic policy you’ve never heard of leaves you vulnerable, too,” drew widespread attention to a legal loophole in crosswalk laws and appeared in more than 50 news outlets nationwide, including USA Today .

“Dr. Hamann’s work is not only academically rigorous but also accessible and impactful to a

wide audience,” said Diane Rohlman, associate dean for research in the College of Public Health. “Her ability to communicate with clarity, creativity, and passion coupled with her extensive media outreach, exemplifies how she utilizes multiple approaches to address transportation challenges impacting society.”

Bob McMurray and Caroline Clay

Bob McMurray , F. Wendell Miller Professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, and Caroline Clay , assistant professor of acting in the Department of Theatre Arts, were recipients of the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) Distinguished Mentor Awards . The awards honors mentors’ dedication to making their students research experiences successful.

“I can’t imagine my research journey without Bob’s welcoming kindness, thriving lab community, and confident mentorship, and I am so deeply grateful for his impact on me,” said Hannah Franke, a psychology and linguistics major mentored by McMurray.

“I know I am far from the only student whose life has been impacted by Caroline Clay,” said Isabella Hohenadel, a second-year theatre arts major. “She deserves to be recognized of all of the wonderful work she does and how much she cares about us as students. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of recognition than her.”

Staff Awards

Angie Robertson

Angie Robertson , department administrator for CCOM’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology, received the Distinguished Research Administrator Award . The award recognizes staff members who performed exceptional service in support of research at the UI by exploring funding opportunities, assisting in grant proposal preparation, submission, post-award administration, and operational support.

In addition to overseeing every aspect of daily operations for the department, Robertson manages nearly 100 research grants for the department and three longstanding NIH T32 training grants.

“Angie plays a leading role in our department office, inspiring us to achieve all aspects of our missions ,” said Li Wu, professor and department chair. “She is innovative, collaborative, accountable, and respectful  in her daily work. She exceeds any expectations and sets a great example for staff members in the department.”

Min Zhu

Min Zhu , research specialist in the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research (IIOHR) within the College of Dentistry, received the Distinguished Research Professional Award . The award recognizes staff members who performed exceptional service in support of research at the UI by conducting experiments, collecting, and analyzing results and performing operational duties associated with a laboratory or research program.

Zhu has worked as a lab bench scientist in the College of Dentistry since 2006, executing experimental work for grants and other research, working closely with IIOHR faculty members, overseeing lab maintenance and environmental health and safety efforts.

“Beyond her research skills, Dr. Zhu has been an exceptional mentor and educator for my students and other junior researchers,” said Liu Hong, professor of prosthodontics. “Her kindness and willingness to share her knowledge have made her a beloved figure among them.”

CurtisIberg

Curtis Iberg , manager of sterilization services in the College of Dentistry, received the Innovation in Safety Award, which celebrates exceptional and ground-breaking innovations that advance safety at the UI. Iberg led a major renovation of the College of Dentistry’s instrument processing and sterilization area, with the aim of encouraging better workflow and support for future growth.

“His innovations in workspace are a valuable asset to the greater University and demonstrates that the most important people to be involved in a space renovation are those that use the area because they can see how the facility can better function and how it can be designed for future needs,” said Kecia Leary, associate dean of clinics.
