How to Do a Nursing Proctored Essay

Once your proctor has given you the test directions, pay attention to your writing and not the supervision.

Successfully completing a nursing essay relies less on the presence of your exam proctor and more on the extent of your study in preparation for the test. An exam proctor is simply a professor, teacher or teaching assistant who begins the exam on time, supervises the essay writing while it is underway and collects the exam booklets at the end of the allowed time. Depending upon the school or class, they may also be responsible for reviewing your identification as you sign in to take the scheduled test. Follow her directions and then turn your attention to your task at hand: passing your essay exam.

Study the material as directed by your professor to prepare for the examination. While studying and reviewing the information, try to group the material into subtopics and categories that would be appropriate for essay questions. Review your lecture notes and reading for any emphases on special topics. Essay topics are rarely pulled out of thin air.

Arrive a minimum of 10 minutes prior to your scheduled test if you are known to the proctor or teaching assistant; sooner if you are a stranger to the nurse proctor and will need to provide photo ID and sign-in to the testing center.

Turn your cell phone off and put it away. Put your books, papers, backpack or bag where directed by the proctor.

Listen carefully to all the proctor's instructions. Raise your hand if you have any questions that will require clarification.

Take a deep breath, read your essay question, open your test booklet and -- begin answering the question with the information you know. Use complete sentences to express your thoughts and stick to your topic. Utilize nursing terminology -- with correct spelling -- as appropriate. When completed, reread your efforts and add any necessary information as you are able. Raise you hand to notify the proctor that you have completed the exam.

  • Remember that if breaks are allowed, they usually count against your allowable time to take the exam.
  • Don't panic. If you start to become too nervous, reread the essay question and take a few deep breaths. Prepare a brief outline on a blank sheet in the exam book to help direct your thoughts and writing.
  • If essay questions intimidate you, practice them. Most professors will be happy to share example essay questions for your additional study.

Nursing Proctored Essay

Nursing programs are very competitive and close entry programs, which makes the admission application process is very rigorous. Some nursing schools ask the applicants to write a proctored essay as part of their application process.

A nursing proctored essay is whereby you are given an essay topic to write about within a specified period, and the proctor watches over you as you write the essay. The time given can range from one to two hours, depending on the nursing school or program.

The essay topics are very diverse and range from leadership to ethics. They are not necessarily textbook questions, but they seek to understand how you can interpret a particular case in a specified situation.

Below is a guide on how to write an impressive nursing proctored essay that will leave an impact on the reader and influence the nursing school’s decision to favor your admission.

Purpose of a Nursing Proctored Essay

Nursing essays have different topics, and you can be asked to ask about various issues in healthcare or about yourself and your future nursing career.

Some of the nursing proctored essay topics include transferable skills, tolerance for stress, motivational fitness, communication, personal values, and diversity .

These essays seek to establish your use of language, grammar, spelling, organization, and proper structuring of paragraphs. The essays also seek to confirm whether you have a good understanding of the topics.

The essays are proctored because they want to determine if the applicant can write well. The nursing school also wants to establish if you have a good command of the English language because communication is essential in nursing practice.

Tips for Writing a Great Nursing Proctored Essay

1.    planning.

This is a crucial step; plan before you start writing a nursing proctored essay. The idea is to develop an outline with your ideas or thoughts that you want to include in the essay.

2.    Thesis Statement

The essay should include a thesis statement that will capture the key argument for the response. The thesis statement is mostly included in the last part of the introduction paragraph.

The thesis statement must be coherent and concise and should give a sound introduction to your entire response.

3.    Proctored Essay Structure

The nursing proctored essay must follow the fundamental rules of grammar and format . It must have a well-established introduction, body, and conclusion.

You should also ensure that you have a good transition from one paragraph to another in the essay’s body. You should also pay attention to grammar and word choice.

Lastly, proofread the essay to ensure that there are no punctuation errors in the paper. Use punctuation marks, commas, and conjunctions appropriately.

4.    Content

The nursing proctored essay must provide a detailed response to the question asked. You should not state assumptions but acknowledge the facts related to the topic. Make the response prompt and avoid any irrelevant details.

For instance, the essay topic can ask you about your ability to be a leader as a nurse. In this case, you should delve into your values, principles, and the leadership abilities that you possess and how you can translate them into the workplace.

5.    Point of View

Ensure that you write your nursing proctored essay at the right point of view. Ideally, a third person voice is ideal for the benefit of the readers in the nursing school as appropriate.

If the prompt is asking you to write about your personal life, then you should write in the first person. You should never use the second person when writing a nursing proctored essay.

6.    Formal Tone

Ensure that the tone in your nursing proctored essay is more scholarly and less conversational. Revise the style to ensure that it is formal.

Improper punctuation, misspellings, and sentence fragments indicate that the essay is poorly conceived or written carelessly.

Evaluating a Nursing Proctored Essay

The evaluation of a nursing essay adopts the following criteria:

Organization

Ideally, a persuasive essay is divided into three segments, including the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The article should be organized in a manner that the thoughts flow from one point to another.

A quality essay is coherent, concise, clear, and devoid of errors in word use, punctuation, and grammar . Go through the essay to ensure that it has a good flow without any mistakes.

A persuasive essay provides accurate responses to the topic and supports generalizations with accurate and ample facts, examples, and details. It should also include relevant nursing terminology.

Overall, writing a successful nursing essay depends on how prepared you are for the essay but our nursing essay writer can also help.

The essay topics are mostly on issues that you already know, and the main point is to establish your ability to comprehend a topic and provide concise and coherent responses.

Reread your essay to ensure that the information provided is relevant, and your essay is clear and coherent.

Here are the key steps involved in writing a nursing essay:

Understanding the Topic and Question

The first step in writing a nursing essay is to carefully read and understand the topic and question.

This will help you determine what information you need to research and include in your essay. Make sure you understand any key terms or concepts related to the topic. Consider different perspectives or viewpoints that may be relevant.

Researching the Topic

Once you have a clear understanding of the topic and question, it's time to research.

Start by gathering information from credible sources such as academic journals, textbooks, and government websites.

Consider both primary and secondary sources, and make sure to take detailed notes as you read.

Organizing and Outlining the Essay

Once you have completed your research, it's time to organize your ideas and create an outline for your essay.

Start by identifying the main points or arguments you want to make, and then organize them into a logical order that flows well.

Your outline should include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Writing the Essay

With your outline in place, it's time to start writing your essay. Make sure to follow your outline closely, and use clear and concise language that effectively communicates your ideas.

Use evidence from your research to support your arguments, and cite your sources appropriately.

Editing and Revising the Essay

Once you have completed a first draft of your essay, take some time to edit and revise it. Look for any errors in grammar, spelling, or punctuation, and make sure your essay is well-organized and flows well.

Consider asking a peer or instructor to review your essay and provide feedback.

What To Include In Your Nursing Essay

When writing a nursing essay, there are several key elements that you should include. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Analysis and Evaluation

Provide analysis and evaluation of the evidence and examples you've presented. This can include discussing strengths and weaknesses, comparing and contrasting different viewpoints, or offering your own perspective on the topic.

Your conclusion should summarize the main points of your essay and restate your thesis statement. It should also offer some final thoughts or suggestions for further research or action.

Application review process

There are always more qualified applicants than space available in our nursing programs. Therefore, our process is competitive, and we have to deny admission to some students with good academic records.

All applications are holistically reviewed by program-specific admissions committees, comprised of faculty and staff. Committee members read applications prior to a committee meeting where all applicants are discussed.

Even when taking many factors into consideration, it is sometimes difficult to provide specific feedback on why a student has been denied admission. This section provides information that may help you better understand our decision-making factors and how you can strengthen your application in the future.

What is a “holistic review”?

We use an  evaluative  rather than a  quantitative  process in our admissions review. This means our decisions are based on more than simply which applicants have the highest grades.

We form an overall evaluation based on academic background and other factors, such as outside interests and activities, evidence of leadership and a sense of direction, and life experience.

We do not expect all students to excel across the board, but achievement in relevant academic areas or evidence of overcoming hardships can strengthen an application.

What it means to be on the waitlist

The UW School of Nursing has extremely limited space in all degree programs. Competitive applicants who we do not have enough space to admit to a particular program or track will be offered a place on our waitlist.

Frequently, offers of admission are made to competitive applicants whose plans may change or they decide to accept an offer from another school. If an admitted applicant forfeits their offer of admission, we contact the next person on the waitlist.

Because we have no control over any individual’s plan to accept an offer of admission, there is no way to know if or when a space will open up for anyone who is on the waitlist. There are many considerations in addition to the instructions stated in your letter:

  • The SoN makes offers from the waitlist until the last possible date where a prospective student can realistically meet compliance requirements necessary to begin the program. Sometimes, students are admitted off the waitlist up until one week prior to the beginning of the quarter the program begins.
  • Waitlist lengths are limited to a number that is realistic in terms of how many spaces we think may open up any given year. In other words, we do not want to “tow anyone along.” If you were offered a waitlist slot, the faculty believe there is a possibility that space may open up and you could be offered a spot in the program.
  • If a space opens up for you, we contact you immediately by email. If you do not hear from us, you can assume that there is no space at this time. If your contact information has or will be changing from what you submitted in your application,  log into the application portal to update your contact information.
  • Historically, there is no consistent pattern and thus, there is no way to predict exactly how a waitlist will run for a program or track. Some years, we go through the entire waitlist. Some years, only a few spots open up. It is rare that everyone who is made an offer of admission accepts it.

If not admitted

Bachelor of science in nursing (bsn) and accelerated bachelor of science in nursing (absn) programs.

Many factors contribute to why the admissions committee may have denied an applicant. Each applicant is scored and considered in relation to their competitiveness within the entire pool of applicants.

If you were not invited to the proctored essay

  • Overall academic record
  • Personal statement
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Background and healthcare experience

If you were not admitted to the BSN/ABSN program

  • Minimum requirements were not met. For example, an application was submitted despite not meeting stated prerequisite, grade, GPA, or application completion criteria. Or, if minimum requirements were met, it is possible that an applicant was denied based on a low ranking within the entire applicant pool.
  • An applicant is considered an academic risk if they have repeated and/or withdrawn from several Natural Sciences courses in order to meet the minimum GPA requirement for the program. Or, there may not have been enough evidence that an applicant could adequately handle the rigorous workload. Though the applicant may have met the minimum requirement, a pattern of repeats, withdrawals, or inconsistent performance makes them less competitive within the context of the entire pool that applied at the same time.
  • The applicant may have expressed minimal or less relevant healthcare experience in relation to their stated goals or in relation to the pool of overall applicants. Specifically, an applicant must clearly articulate a match between their experiences and goals as related to nursing. Please learn more about the  hands-on healthcare experience requirement .
  • The applicant did not clearly articulate how their background, experience, and goals have prepared them to succeed in the program and in the profession. For example, if an applicant did not follow directions for how to format their resumes, the admissions committee was unable to ascertain information about an applicant’s health experience, community service and involvement, leadership, and training and certifications. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide evidence in the application that they are a solid fit with the program and profession.
  • The applicant submitted inconsistent or inappropriate essay responses for the personal statements by not indicating a clear line of thinking with supported rationale, evidence of critical thinking and self-reflection, or problem solving. Some applicants fail to respond to the actual essay prompts. The components of the application are designed to glean whether an applicant possesses the “ Essential Qualifications for BSN and ABSN Students .”
  • The overall presentation of the application did not indicate to reviewers a level of maturity, self-awareness, and/or self-reflection necessary to succeed in the program, which is academically and personally demanding.

This is not an exhaustive list, but does summarize and highlight the most common reasons for denial of admission. If you are considering applying to the program at a later date or if you seek more information about how your file was reviewed, we highly recommend that you attend and/or  listen to an ABSN/BSN Information Session .

Additionally, we go over each application requirement with the aim of transparently informing applicants exactly how and why the admissions committee weighs an application fairly within an extremely competitive pool.  Visit our information session web page  to find ways to improve upon your application should you decide to reapply.

PCC Proctored Essay for Fall 17'?

U.S.A. Oregon

Published Mar 30, 2017

Hi all! Was wondering if anyone else received their email inviting them to the proctored essay at PCC? Does anyone know approximately how many people are invited to the essay? I know the cohort size is typically 80 so just trying to determine, statistically the chances of being accepted for a spot in the cohort.

Yep just received mine! Not sure how many were invited but I want to say there are a few days scheduled and a friend from last year said she was in a room with about 30 for the essay. It's hard to drum up stats because they use a combined total of essay points and preliminary application points, but also hard not to obsess at this point haha. Best of luck!

ruyehara

Does anyone know what questions were on previous proctored essays? Or have an idea of what kind of questions might be on this essay as well as how many question we will need to be answering?

I'm not really sure what to expect. I'm going to be looking at threads from last years comments and such to get a better idea. I just know from the PCC website that we have 1.5 hours for 2-3 essay questions. I wonder how many got invited to take the proctored essay and how many applications they received this year.

burns3c

Hi all! The PCC nursing admissions faq page says "up to 200 applicants invited" to the proctored essay and "up to 80" invited to continue afterward. I'm going to check out some threads from the last couple of years and hopefully gather some intel on what the topics/prompts might be. Does anyone already have an idea about what the specifics of the proctored essay have been like in years past? Do we get to type them out? Hand written? Number of questions? Time limit?

Mbells.

At all the interviews and essays last year we were instrusted to not discuss questions. I will say that all were pretty similar. I would focus on why you want to be a nurse, apart from the standard "I want to help people" and what skills you possess that will make you a great, compassionate and competent nurse. Look up example questions online and don't memorize and answer but think about the questions and how you would answer genuinely. I spent hours looking up examples and making documents reflecting on my own skills, experiences and qualities. I will say it was typed and it was only a couple questions. Same with the other schools.

Rumor mill has it that the program admits 60ish this Fall. And for the essay, reflect on your experiences and interprofessionalism. Be honest. Be true. Tell your story. You got this far to be invited to the essay, so stand out :)

Really? Just 60'ish? They told us 80 this term at the information session and also when we called to get scholarship information. Ugh, 60 makes it that much harder. I'm so nervous! Does anyone know if they interview several times each day or is it just a few sessions?

I believe that you are correct about only 60 or so being in this fall cohort. Have you done your essay yet? I did mine and the room was not quite full, there were only around 18 or so people there. I think they are also putting around 60 or so on the wait list as well. I know each year is different but previous threads have commented on the fact that historically PCC goes through their wait list. It seems like many people interview at multiple places and then eventually make their decision between schools. I've seen it come up several times between PCC and CCC and PCC and OHSU and once people get the invites to either of those they give up their spot at PCC. Not 100% but seems to be the pattern. Anyone able to confirm this? I also got the vibe that not quite 200 were invited to interview this time around due to the reduced cohort size. So from what past threads have stated as well as info from PCC it appears that if you were selected to interview you are either in the program or wait listed. Does anyone know if this is verifiable? Good luck to everyone participating in the proctored essay.

Has anyone received any communication from PCC that provided with you with your point totals? I received one from CCC but not from PCC and was just curious if this is something they provide to applicants. Has anyone had their interviews at PCC yet? Do they do them all day for one day or multiple sessions for a few days? Trying to get a feel of how many people went to the proctored essay. Good luck to all on this adventure of applying to nursing school!

;)

Has anyone had interviews elsewhere? If so how did they go and have you heard back? I saw on another thread for this fall a few people who interviewed in several places have heard back from OHSU and have been accepted (awesome sauce for them!). I don't know about you guys but I had a good vibe from PCC and am keeping my fingers crossed I get in as I think it will be a really good fit for me. Good luck to everyone and would love to hear updates.

So Monday is the day everyone when we should be hearing back. I am so impatient!!! I was hoping by some chance we would hear back earlier- it's going to be another long weekend of anticipation. Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!

How to Proctor Online Authentic Assessments

  • March 24, 2022

Many believe authentic assessments are best for in-person classes, but they’re just as useful in online courses – but there are still challenges.

  • A nursing student is recording a video demonstration about how to take blood pressure
  • What if they have instructions on their desk or a classmate in the room showing them what to do next?
  • An accounting student is preparing a balance sheet in Excel
  • What if they copy and paste formulas or search the internet for help?

The good news is that online proctoring can be used to prevent cheating during authentic assessments and we’ll show you how for these assessment activities:

  • Presentations and demonstrations (Individuals & groups)
  • Essays (handwritten & typed)
  • Math problems using pen and paper
  • Use of real industry software
  • Open-book test format

Example : A nursing student identifies the parts of a stethoscope, demonstrates how it works, and presents one way they believe it can be improved.

How to use proctoring for online presentations and demonstrations

Detect voices and get a transcript of what was said

The AI proctoring software can detect voices and provide the instructor with a transcript of what the student said during the assessment presentation. This can help save time when checking for certain topics without watching the whole video.

The AI software also listens for specific keywords or phrases, such as “Hey Siri” or “OK Google,” and words from a custom list provided by the instructor, such as “help me,” or “what’s the answer?”

If the AI detects any potential dishonesty, it alerts a live remote proctor to pop into the online assessment session to intervene and redirect the student.

Scan the room and monitor student behavior

If the instructor wants to make sure that students aren’t using any notes or resources during the assessment, they can require students to complete a room scan and the AI proctoring software monitors student behavior throughout the assessment to detect potential dishonesty.

Record the presentation/demonstration

The AI proctoring software records the entire presentation for the instructor to watch. The recording also includes timestamps of any suspicious behavior to review.

Group presentation authentic assessments

Example : Three students in different locations record a group presentation using a video conferencing platform.

How to use remote proctoring for group presentations

Much of this process is the same as recording an individual student’s presentation. Instructors can use remote proctoring to verify each student’s ID, scan the room for additional notes and resources, record the presentation video, and to get a transcript of what the students said during the presentation.

The instructor would just review the audio and video of the presentation from one student in the group.

Authentic assessment essays (typed and handwritten)

Example : Students write an essay by hand or they can type it in an online word processor, such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

How to use online proctoring for essays and written test questions

Allow handwritten essays

Some students may be more comfortable with handwriting their essay. Handwritten essays can be allowed by providing the live proctor with specific settings, instructions, and test rules.

Proctoring setting

The instructor turns on Scratch Paper Allowed and the AI won’t flag a student for looking down at their paper.

The student would simply show the blank paper before they start writing and upload the written essay after they complete it.

Test rules and instructions for students

The instructor provides test rules and instructions that require the student to use white paper and a black or dark blue pen.

Use a browser guard to only allow access to specific sites

The instructor provides a list of specific browser-based word processors that students can access to type their written response, such as Google Docs and Microsoft Word.

After students complete the essay, there are workflows in the LMS for uploading written work, notes, and scratch paper.

Detect when students use their cell phones to look up test answers

Some online proctoring software can detect when students attempt to use their cell phones or other devices to access test bank content during the exam.

Verify student ID

The webcam is used to verify student ID in about a minute so that instructors can be sure that the student completing the assessment is the one getting credit for it.

Authentic assessment math problems using pen and paper

Example: Students read the math problems on the online assessment and use scratch paper to complete the math problem.

How to proctor math problems completed by hand using pen and paper

Proctoring math problems that are answered using pen and paper will be similar to the process for handwritten essays. In addition to verifying ID, scanning the room, monitoring behavior, and detecting cell phones, specific settings and instructions can be used to proctor online math problems.

To help keep the review process organized, the instructor can provide specific instructions for students to follow such as:

  • Only use black or dark blue pen and blank white paper
  • Only answer one question per side of paper
  • Before you begin answering the question, hold the blank paper up to the camera
  • Clearly write the question number in the top left corner of the paper
  • Show your work after your complete each question
  • To show your work, hold the piece of paper up to the camera for three seconds after you complete each question
  • If you need to redo your work, hold the piece of paper up for the question you’re redoing, cross out your answer, start your new work on a blank piece of paper and repeat the steps

Authentic assessment requiring the use of real-world software

Example : Accounting students must prepare their own balance sheet from scratch using Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel.

How to use online exam proctoring for assessment activities using real-world software

Use a browser guard to prevent access to other websites

A browser guard is a quick way to prevent students from opening new windows, tabs, or applications. It can also be used to only allow specific URLs during the online authentic assessment.

Record students’ screens during the assessment activity for review

The students’ screens can be recorded throughout the assessment activity and the instructor can watch the videos to see how students completed it.

Record audio for an “explainer video” In addition to recording students’ screens during the assessment activity, instructors can also record audio. This way, instructors can watch the student complete the activity and the student can explain what they’re doing and why.

As previously mentioned, the audio recording also comes with a transcript of what the student said during the recording.

Similar to the authentic assessment activities mentioned earlier in this article, instructors can also verify ID, detect cell phone use, and complete a room scan.

Open book authentic assessments

Example: The assessment, or parts of the assessment, allow students to use specific books and resources in physical and electronic formats.

How to use online proctoring for open book test questions

In addition to cell phone detection, voice detection, and other features described in this article, instructors can also: Scan the room to ensure that only permitted resources are available

During the room scan, students can have instructor-permitted books in the testing area that they can use during the proctored authentic assessment.

Identify leaked test questions

Instructors can use technology to search the Internet to identify when test questions have been leaked. If any leaked test questions are found, instructors are given simple steps to take control of their exams’ integrity.

Only allow specific digital resources

Instructors can allow students to access specific digital resources during the proctored exam. The instructor simply adds the exact URLs of permitted sites in the exam setup.

Honorlock makes it easy to proctor online authentic assessments

Assessment recordings are time-stamped to streamline reviews.

After the authentic assessment is complete, instructors can access actionable reports and time-stamped recordings within the LMS dashboard.

The reports include important information about student activity, such as potential violations and suspicious behavior, in an easy-to-read format to streamline the review process.

The direct LMS integration creates a familiar testing environment

Honorlock’s proctoring software integrates with the existing LMS , which creates a very familiar test experience for students and instructors.

  • Instructors create assessments the same way they already do and then simply choose which online proctoring features to use
  • Students take the proctored assessment within the LMS like they’re accustomed to and get live support without leaving the assessment window
  • No extra passwords or logins needed

Students can take proctored authentic assessments 24/7/365 and get live support

Even though Honorlock makes things simple and easy, we still provide live support for students and faculty – any time, day or night.

Combines AI with human proctors which can help reduce student test anxiety

Honorlock’s AI monitors each student’s online assessment session and alerts a live, US-based proctor if any potential academic dishonesty is detected. The live proctor can then use an analysis window to review the situation before entering the assessment session via chat-box to address the situation and help the student get back on track.

This approach delivers a much less intimidating and non-invasive proctored testing experience for the student.

Detect cell phones and other devices

The ability to detect cell phones and other devices is especially important because most students have access to one or more devices. Honorlock’s online proctoring software can detect when students attempt to use their cell phone, tablet, and laptop to access test bank content during the authentic assessment.

Scan the testing environment

Before the authentic assessment begins, instructors can require students to scan the room and the desk area to ensure no unauthorized people or items are in the testing environment.

If the instructor would like the student to show certain items, such as blank scratch paper or a book, they can use the “Additional Instructions” section to detail what they’d like the student to do for the room scan.

Block access to websites and applications

Honorlock’s Browser Guard™ prevents and/or flags if the student attempts to open new windows or tabs or interacts with any other application on the desktop. It can also be used to only allow students to access specific websites while still blocking access to others.

Identify leaked test questions and take action to protect content

Honorlock’s Search & Destroy technology searches the internet to identify exam questions that have been shared online and if leaked exam questions are found, instructors are given simple steps to take control of their exams’ integrity.

Verify ID in about a minute

ID verification quick and simple with Honorlock. Our AI captures a picture of the student along with their photo ID. In about 60 seconds, students are able to begin their proctored online exam.

Detect voices and get transcripts

Our online exam proctoring software listens for specific keywords or phrases , such as “Hey Siri” or “OK Google,” or words from a dynamic list, such as “help me,” or “what’s the answer.” The AI then alerts a live remote proctor to pop into the online exam session via chat to intervene and redirect the student.

Additionally, Honorlock creates a written transcript whenever a voice is detected.
