ChromeOS Flex installation guide

1: create the usb installer.

The device that you use to create your USB installer can be different to the device you plan to install ChromeOS Flex on. How you create your installer depends on the device you're using.

• Chromebook Recovery Utility (recommended)—Windows or Mac device with Chrome browser installed or a ChromeOS device.
• Download from Google—ChromeOS, Windows, Mac, or Linux device. Chrome browser not needed.

All contents on the USB drive will be erased.

Use Chromebook Recovery Utility

Step 1: install chromebook recovery utility.

• Go to the Chrome web store .
• At the top right, click Add to Chrome .
• When prompted, click Add extension .

The Chromebook Recovery Utility is now an extension in your Chrome browser.

Step 2: Make sure Chrome Recovery Utility extension is turned on

• Next to Chromebook Recovery Utility , toggle the switch to the right. Optional: You can also click Details and toggle the switch to the right.

After you turn on the Chromebook Recovery Extension, in the extension panel in your browser, click on the extension to open the pop-up.

Step 3: Build the USB installer

• In Chrome browser, launch the Chrome Recovery Utility extension.
• Click Get started .
• Click Select a model from a list .
• For Select a manufacturer , find and click Google ChromeOS Flex .

• Click Continue .
• When prompted, insert your USB drive.
• From the dropdown menu, select the USB drive.
• Click Create now . Note: During the process, it is normal for Chrome Recovery Utility to show unusual percentages.
• When you get a message that your recovery media is ready, remove your USB drive from the device.

Download from Google

For admins who are comfortable with creating bootable USB drives using dd command-line utility or other third-party utilities.

• On your device, download the latest ChromeOS Flex installer image .
• Use your preferred decompression tool to unzip the file.
• Insert your USB drive. Be sure to remove all other removable media.
• Open a terminal or command line.
• image_name.bin —The name of the downloaded installer file
• /dev/sdN —The USB drive

Another critical Chrome update has just been issued

Another Chrome security update has just been issued, with the Stable channel updated to 124.0.6367.78/.79 . This release includes a critical fix to the underlying graphics engine of the type that has allowed attackers to execute code on target machines in the past—albeit no news yet as to any exploitation this time around.

The update also includes two high-severity memory fixes—the kind typically seen in such updates. Google has acknowledged that such memory vulnerabilities in its core engine are the most frequently discovered and exploited. As usual, there is no further information “until a majority of users are updated with a fix.”

Given that Google has designated the first fix—essentially a vulnerability to potential code manipulation—as critical, it seems highly likely it’s a credible threat. And once the fix becomes public, it’s important that users update as soon as they can—the clock is ticking for any exploitation.

Usually, a critical fix might have been the biggest Chrome news of the week, but not this time. The other news is that the death of Chrome’s dreaded tracking cookies has been delayed once again—this time into early 2025, at least.

The issue is Google’s need to balance the privacy of its users with the seemingly fair treatment of its advertisers, especially when it essentially plays both gamekeeper (as owner of the browser) and poacher (as the world’s largest ad machine).

“We recognize that there are ongoing challenges related to reconciling divergent feedback from the industry, regulators and developers,” Google said in a post mid-week, “and will continue to engage closely with the entire ecosystem.”

That’s a critical update of an entirely different kind.

The update comes as Google’s ongoing engagement with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) tries to carve a path through this messy situation. “We will not complete third-party cookie deprecation during the second half of Q4,” Google confirmed. “Assuming we can reach an agreement, we envision proceeding with third-party cookie deprecation starting early next year.”

Google is in something of a bind here, given its unique role in the industry. As web users become ever more privacy savvy, the gap between where Chrome is today and Apple’s Safari remains too wide. Chrome is an excellent browser, and its users rightly want to see it line up more closely with the alternatives.

Google seems to agree—notwithstanding its awkward Incognito Mode stumble—but it needs to find a compromise that doesn’t kill its ad model as well as those cookies.

Meanwhile, the bigger open question is around AI, of course, and just what this will mean for browser searching and advertising in the coming years. All told, by the time these cookies finally disappear, we may be in new territory anyway.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft gives players a chance to flaunt their style.

Terrion Arnold made the most of it.

The former Alabama cornerback, styled by Tom Marchitelli, stole the show on the red carpet Thursday by rocking an electric salmon silk suit with a silver bow tie.

His peers certainly didn’t look shabby, either.

Caleb Williams wore a Chrome Hearts navy blue suit with a vertical zipper that went from the right side of his chest down to his waist with a black crew shirt and black boots.

“They worked pretty hard on this. I just came up with the idea,” Williams said. “We have a full, classy, but unique — one of one — suit.”

Darius Robinson, a Motor City native, was sporting a purple sport coat designed by Terry Corbett and black pants that he topped off with Cartier sunglasses.

A few hours before Quinyon Mitchell strolled the red carpet in the shadow of the Fox Theatre, the former Toledo cornerback was getting his fit right.

Mitchell led two Baynes + Baker representatives and a personal shopper to his Detroit hotel room, where he tried on his custom-made black silk tuxedo with his name embroidered on the inside of the jacket.

After slipping on his Prada shoes, Mitchell invited his family to come up to his room for their feedback, which was overwhelmingly positive.

“I want to look good,” Mitchell told The Associated Press with a laugh when asked about how he landed on the look.

Baynes + Baker co-founder Ravi Punn fitted Mitchell and said the look exudes confidence.

“It fits great,” said Punn, who works with Ethan Weisman of Pantheon Limited to design suits and fits for players. “Everybody’s going to be complimenting him all night. That just adds to everything.”

Mitchell and former North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye were among the 13 first-round prospects to accept invitations to attend the draft. All of them had a chance to walk the red carpet along Woodward Avenue, just up the street from the site of the draft at Campus Martius Park, a few hours before the first pick was announced.

J.J. McCarthy was not a part of the festivities in the Motor City, but still had Alo Yoga make a custom charcoal gray suit.

Maye said his khaki Hugo Boss suit with North Carolina blue accents was exactly what he was looking for.

“I keep it simple with my suit,” he said. “I wear something North Carolina — represent — just because I love that school.”
