Think resumes are only for job seekers? Think again. A high school student resume gives colleges a snapshot of your accomplishments, extracurriculars, hobbies, and work history. They can also be a useful tool for prepping for a college interview or to give to the teachers who are writing your letters of recommendation .

What should go on a high school student resume for college admissions?

Any of the sections below could appear on your resume for college applications. Pick an assortment that works for you!

  • Heading with your name, address, and e-mail
  • High school information with your graduation date, GPA (weighted), class rank, and SAT/ACT scores
  • Academic awards, publications, honors, and other achievements
  • Coursework (summer programs, college courses, or other specialized workshops that do not appear on your high school transcript)
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Community service
  • Work experience
  • Special skills (e.g. foreign language fluency or HTML expertise)

When should you submit a resume to colleges?

Some colleges and scholarship committees request or recommend that you include a high school resume with your application materials. (But don’t submit a resume if they don’t ask for one—following instructions is a key application strategy.) Bring your resume to college interviews and give copies to your college counselor and teachers so that they can write you the strongest possible recommendation letter.

Tips for Composing Your College Admissions Resume

1. keep it concise..

Pare down the activities you showcase to the most brag-worthy and most representative of you as a candidate. Do colleges need to know that you were on the field hockey team for one semester in Grade 9? Probably not. The standard rule of thumb is to stick to one or two pages.

2. Focus on depth and length of commitment.

When deciding which activities and accomplishments make the cut, keep in mind that colleges would much rather see you excited about one or two key experiences than sporadic involvement in 20 clubs. If having an after-school job limited your ability to participate in clubs or sports, make sure your resume plays up your work responsibilities, training, and on-the-job skills.

3. Provide detail whenever possible.

The details are what set a resume apart from a list of extracurriculars on a standard college application. For example, when describing your involvement in the French Club make sure to include:

  • school years/hours per week you participated
  • specific contributions (e.g. "Organized a successful after-school film series to introduce our community to French cinema and culture" )
  • leadership roles (e.g. "Treasurer, Grade 12" )
  • unique details that will make you stand out

4. Highlight things you weren’t able to write about in your college essays or short answers.

Use your high school resume to show colleges something new. If your devotion to photography didn’t make it on the application but is a big part of who you are, then showcase your photography cred on your resume.

5. Formatting is key.

Make your resume easy to scan. Divide information into sections with clear headings, bulleted lists, and a consistent font. Use a system of organization that works for you. (Chronological, by importance of activity, or by time commitment are a few options.) Don’t forget to proofread !

6. Be honest and accurate.

Colleges know how to spot inconsistencies in your high school student resume, and they won’t hesitate to call your counselor to verify information that doesn't seem right. So don't tell them that you have practice for the school play for 30 hours per week—unless drama club is somehow your full-time job!

Gather information about your grades, volunteer opportunities, work background, sports awards and leadership accomplishments. All of this information will prove helpful to the individual writing your college recommendation letter. The letter-writer should attest to how well-rounded you might be.Your resume provides relevant information so the letter will be focused on your qualifications.

Select a resume template in Microsoft Word. On the "File" menu, click the "New" button. In the "New Document" task panel under "Templates," click on the "Templates on Office Online" button and then select a resume. Completing your college applications is a big step for any high school student. You’ve spent hours poring over every section.

You’ve written and rewritten the perfect personal essay .

You are finally ready to finish the application and get it to the admissions committee.

But before you can count the application as complete, you may have to get letters of recommendation from adults who can speak to your abilities, character, and work ethic.

What can you do to help your teachers, coaches, and mentors showcase your very best talents?

This is where a brag sheet is so helpful, both for the recommender and you.

Why are recommendation letters important?

As the applicant, you will highlight the best qualities in your application—your top grades , teamwork as a 4-year athlete, and all of the community service that you’ve completed.

It’s only natural that you say great things when you are trying to sell yourself to an admissions committee. After all, if you don’t think that you are a great applicant, why should they?

But colleges want to know that you are providing an honest assessment of your abilities.

  • This is why recommendation letters can help them better understand where you shine.
  • They provide a personal view of who you are beyond just the standard metrics (grades, test scores, list of activities ) that the rest of the application includes .

When you submit your application to a college admissions board, they review the paperwork and decide if you are a good fit for the school.

  • Letters of recommendation give people the chance to “speak” on your behalf.

Letters from recommenders can also provide another perspective on a challenge you may have faced and overcome.

  • A teacher who saw you come in for extra tutoring to improve after a bad test can talk about your work ethic.

Most ask for 2 or 3 letters of recommendation written by people who know you well. There are a few things that schools look for across the board.

  • Personal stories and insight: A letter of recommendation is the perfect place for your application to get more personal .

In the other sections, you provide your grades , test scores, and a good picture of you are as a student .

But the recommendation letter (in addition to your personal essay) is where you can show who you are as a person.

A great letter of recommendation goes beyond just listing your good qualities or achievements. It gets more into your personality and passions.

  • Written by someone who knows you: The most important thing to remember when considering whom to ask for a letter of recommendation is to choose someone who knows you.

Recommendations are personal accounts of who you are—your character, personality, dreams, and goals . If your recommender doesn’t know these things, they won’t be able to write a very good letter about you.

You may have a distant connection to a famous or prestigious person in the field you want to study, but that doesn’t mean that they will make a good recommender.

You are better off getting a letter of recommendation from a teacher or coach that you have worked with and can write genuinely about your abilities.

  • Specific examples : A letter of recommendation that goes on and on about how great and talented you are only does half the job.

A great letter of recommendation should include specific examples of your greatness and talents.

Writing an anecdote about how you gave up your Saturday mornings all school year to tutor kids in the grade below you paints a more vivid picture than just saying that you help other students.

This is another reason why people who know you and can provide those specific examples should write recommendation letters.

  • In-line with the school’s mission: It’s helpful to do a little bit of research into the mission of the college that you want to attend.

Do they have a particular focus on community service?

If so, getting a letter of recommendation from a teacher who saw you study hard all semester is good, but providing one from the leader of a mission trip that you participated in may do a better job of showing how you are a good fit for this particular school .

  • A cohesive picture of you as an applicant: Consider what goals you have stated in the rest of your application.

If you aspire to be a great novelist, including a recommendation letter from an English teacher who has become your mentor highlights the steps you have taken to pursue that goal.

If you want to work to preserve endangered species as a scientist , ask the volunteer coordinator that you worked with to write your letter.

Whatever your goals are, your recommenders can be great people to write about what you are currently doing to pursue them and how you will continue to do so as a college student.

They are usually professionals working in that field as well; getting their vote of confidence in your ability to join them in that field can go a long way.

How do brag sheets help recommendation letters  .

Brag sheets act as summaries for recommenders.

Like all of us, recommenders are busy people.

  • They may be writing letters for multiple students during application season.
  • You can help them craft the very best recommendation possible by providing them with the relevant details.

Brag sheets are not substitutes for letters of recommendation.

  • Rather, they serve as a reminder for recommenders on what you have accomplished, what your goals are, and how you have worked or studied with them in the past.

Some schools have started asking for brag sheets, similar to a job asking for a resume .

You should make sure that your brag sheet looks professional and puts your best foot forward.

  • Much of the information on your brag sheet will be included in other parts of your application, so take the extra step to make sure that it is accurate and up-to-date.

This helps both your recommenders and any schools to which you submit it as part of your application.

What should I put in a brag sheet?  

Each student’s brag sheet will be unique to them, but there are a few things that are helpful for everyone to include.

  • Your name and contact information
  • Your school information (name, expected graduation date)
  • Your standardized test scores (SAT, ACT, PSAT, etc.)
  • Academic clubs
  • Sports teams
  • Extracurricular clubs
  • Out-of-school clubs (this is especially important if your recommender is connected with your school and may not see your community-based activities)
  • Leadership roles you have held
  • Work experience and when
  • Any awards you have won (academic, athletic, etc.)
  • Your goals for the future as it relates to your college applications
  • Additional notes or insights that may help them understand more about you

How is a brag sheet formatted? How do I make it look nice?  

A brag sheet should look professional and neat.

There is rarely a specific format required, but it should be easy to read and understand. A few helpful tips include:

  • Check your brag sheet for spelling and grammar errors. Nothing says “don’t pick me” like misspelling a simple word (or worse, your own name!).

Run your brag sheet through a spell check program and have another person take a look to make sure it all makes sense.

  • Use a simple font and size. Size 12 Times New Roman is the most widely-used font for resumes, curriculum vitaes, and brag sheets.

If you need to differentiate certain headings, simply bold or indent to create that distinction. Cutesy fonts and big or small sizes should be avoided. The same goes for colored text and pictures.

  • Aim for one page. It is a general rule of thumb to keep professional summaries of your experience to one page.

Even professionals with decades of experience highlight only what can fit on a single page. Why? Because more than that can be hard to read and those reading it may worry that you are simply padding your resume with experiences that aren’t actually relevant to who you are.

Include the most important things that highlight your experience, abilities, personality, and goals.

If they need more information, they can reach out using the contact information you included on the top.

  • Your school may have a specific format for brag sheets.

Check with your guidance counselor’s office to see if they have any standard format that teachers and coaches at your school are used to seeing.

You can also use this template to provide the basic information needed for a recommendation letter.

When should I write a brag sheet?  

You should start your brag sheet as soon as possible.

  • Once you start participating in activities or winning awards, keep all of this information in a binder or folder.

This will keep you from forgetting the details of the experience and make your brag sheet more specific.

  • Relevant information and accomplishments help recommenders include this information in their letters, which paints a clearer picture of you to an admissions committee. Everyone benefits!

Keep in mind that a brag sheet is an ever-changing document.

You will need to update it as you add clubs, awards, work experience, and other things to your life. It helps to sit down periodically to make any changes needed.

This can prevent you from having to perform a major rewrite when it comes time to send the document out.

What else should I give to a recommender?  

It should be a given, but always ask your potential recommenders if they would be willing to write your letter of recommendation before you provide their information on your application.

  • This is best done in person and conveys respect for them.
  • It also gives them the opportunity to gracefully decline if they don’t feel they have the time or insight to write the letter that you need.
  • You should ask recommenders well in advance of any deadlines so that they have time to actually write a great letter.

I always recommend that you provide the admissions guidelines for the schools to which you are applying to anyone involved in crafting your application.

This includes those individuals writing your letters of recommendation.

  • Chances are if you have a strong history with them and they have agreed to write your recommendation letter, they want to help you reach your goals.
  • They will appreciate all of the information that you can provide.
  • If the school is looking for something in particular, such as your leadership potential, ask your recommender to include an example of when you were a great leader.
  • You can also share the school’s mission to help them better understand what they value in a potential student and what should be highlighted in their letter about you.

Recommenders also appreciate knowing the logistical details of the letter-writing process.

  • Will they be sent an electronic link?
  • Will they need to send their letter to the university directly? (If so, provide the correct mailing address on a stamped envelope.)
  • Will they need to upload it to an electronic portal?
  • When is the letter due?

All of these details will help them know exactly what is expected of them as a recommender and when.

Or, maybe, a coworker will ask you to write a recommendation letter for their new job application.

A letter of recommendation is a formal document confirming and recommending a person’s work, skills, or academic performance and potential. 

Typically, a recommendation letter is required for: 

  • University admissions
  • Fellowships or internship positions
  • Job applications
  • Volunteering opportunities

You should ideally write a recommendation for someone whose abilities and work ethic you are familiar with - for example, a colleague, student you taught, your employee, or someone you supervised at work.

Similarly, if you’re the one asking for a recommendation letter, you should ask someone who can attest to your professional or academic abilities. 

The types of recommendation letters are:

  • Academic recommendation letters.
  • Employment recommendation letters.
  • Character recommendation letters.

Here’s what each type of recommendation letter is about:

#1. Academic Recommendation Letters

Academic recommendation letters are typically required to be submitted by students during the admission processes of graduate and undergraduate schools. 

Generally, each prospective student is requested to submit up to three references, which can be written by any education professional familiar with the candidate’s academic background. 

Academic reference letters include:

  • Recommendation letter for undergraduate/graduate school
  • Recommendation letter for a scholarship
  • Recommendation letter for a fellowship program

#2. Employment recommendation letters 

This type makes up the most popular type of recommendation letter.

Sometimes, employers can ask you to submit up to 3 recommendation letters as part of your job application.

More often, though, a recruiter might ask you for recommendation letters if they already like your resume and want to learn more about you. 

Employment recommendation letters are written by former - or current - coworkers, employers, or supervisors.

If you can choose, pick someone with more years of experience than you. After all, the more senior they are, the more weight their recommendation carries.

Employment recommendations include: 

  • Recommendation letter for a coworker
  • Recommendation letter for a (former) employee

#3. Character recommendation letters

Character recommendation letters, also known as personal references, are used to describe an individual’s personality by someone who knows them well, including close friends, coworkers, or employers. 

Personal references serve many purposes, the primary ones being court cases dealing with criminal issues such as drunk driving offenses, or legal situations such as child adoption procedures. 

It is not uncommon, however, to have a potential landlord or even immigration officials ask for a personal reference. 

Personal references include: 

  • Recommendation letter for a friend
  • Recommendation letter for a tenant
  • Recommendation letter for a patient

Recommendation letters follow a particular format and layout that make writing them significantly easier. 

In this section, we’ll cover how to do each the right way, starting with:

Letter of Recommendation Format

A letter of recommendation includes the following sections: 

  • The salutation ; if you are addressing someone whose name you know or writing a personal recommendation letter, the salutation can be addressed to “Dear Mr./Mrs./Dr. Smith.” Otherwise, you may use the generic “to whom it may concern.”
  • The introduction , which first and foremost includes your statement of recommendation (i.e. “ it is my pleasure to recommend… ”). It is common to also briefly state who you are and what your expertise is.
  • The overview, or a description of the applicant’s top skills, attributes, and strengths.
  • A personal story describing more of the applicant’s skills and qualifications.
  • The closing statement , or the final call for action, is where you encourage the recruiter to contact you if additional information is needed.
  • The signature , where you repeat your name and include your full contact information.

Letter of Recommendation Layout 

When it comes to the layout of the recommendation letter, all you need to do is follow some basic formatting rules. Here are the most important ones: 

#1. One page length. This rule applies to resumes too, but it’s even more essential for the recommendation letter. Recruiters go through hundreds of them, so chances are they appreciate concise, to-the-point letters that don’t waste their time. And besides, a good recommendation letter doesn’t have to be an essay to get the recruiter ‘hooked’ - especially if you follow the above format. 

#2. Single-spaced lining, with space between paragraphs . This also keeps your reference letter within the limit by shortening the text. 

#3. Traditional font. Don’t go for something too creative - pick a classic that works. We recommend Times New Roman, Calibri, Arial, Ubuntu, Roboto or Overpass.

#4. 1” margins on all sides . This creates enough white space around the margins and makes the letter easy to read. Additionally, the text should be aligned to the left - although this is a standard alignment for most documents.    

#5. 10-12pt font size . This is the font size range that makes the document easy to read. Adjusting the font size is another good way to keep your recommendation letter within the length limit.

How to Ask for a Recommendation Letter 

Need to ask someone for a recommendation letter? Here’s what you need to know.

The go-to person for your recommendation letter will depend on the type of reference you’ll need. 

For example, if you need an employment recommendation letter , your top choices should involve people who are familiar with your work ethic and professional abilities, but with whom you’ve also had a positive professional relationship. For example:

  • Your team lead
  • Department head
  • CEO of the company
  • Direct manager
  • A coworker you’ve worked with together on a project

If you are a recent graduate with little work experience, you can ask a mentor or college professor to write you a professional reference. 

In case you need an academic recommendation letter , consider asking a professor with whom you’ve worked closely and can positively attest to your academic potential and achievements.

Your thesis advisor, for example, would make a good choice to ask for an academic reference. If you never wrote a Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis, any professor who knows you as more than just a face in a sea of students should do the trick. 

Finally, keep the following in mind when the time comes to ask for a recommendation letter: 

  • Whoever you end up asking, talk to them about it in advance . Then, follow up with a formal email that should contain all reference-related information, such as the submission details and deadline. The email can also include a description of what you’re currently doing (professionally, academically, or independently), what qualifies you for the position, and some relevant skills, achievements, or noteworthy facts.
  • If you’re asking for a professional recommendation letter, make sure to also include your resume and the job description in the follow-up email. This way, the person writing the letter will know more about you and your new position and will be able to write a more relevant recommendation by tailoring your skills to the job, or by mentioning some of your (relevant) achievements.
  • Notify the contacts you’ll be asking - considering that in most cases recruiters ask for up to three recommendation letters - at least two weeks in advance. This will give them enough time to prepare and write a good recommendation letter. This is especially important for academic references because professors are usually writing several recommendation letters simultaneously.
  • Consider attaching a recommendation letter template such as the one provided in this article to your email. The template will considerably ease or guide them through the process of writing the letter.
  • Follow up by sending thank you notes to everyone who writes you a recommendation letter. Sending a letter of appreciation is a courtesy act that will let them know you are grateful for the time and effort they took to recommend you positively.

5 Tips on How to Write a Letter of Recommendation

There’s more to writing a recommendation letter than just following the layout instructions or sticking to the format.

We’re referring to content quality, which happens to be the trickiest part of the process. 

In this section, we’ll teach you how to write a recommendation letter that will impress the recruiter and help your referee!

Tip #1. Write an Attention-Grabbing Introduction  

First things first - the introduction.

This is where you need to grab the reader’s attention and get them interested in reading the recommendation letter. 

How to go about it? Before formally (and briefly) introducing yourself, aim to write an attention-grabbing recommendation statement, instead of a generic one the recruiter probably knows by heart already. 

Let’s explain this more practically: 

Dear Mr. Smith, 

I am pleased to recommend Sarah McKay for the Communications Assistant position.

Nothing wrong with this introduction at first glance, right? It’s a standard way of opening a recommendation letter after all. 

Well that’s exactly what’s wrong with it - it’s way too common. No, this probably won’t get your application disqualified, but it won’t impress the recruiter either.

Want yours to strike the right note? Try something like this instead:

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am sincerely glad to be the one recommending Sarah McKay for the Communications Assistant position.

This recommendation statement is not significantly different from the previous one, except for one thing: it gives the reference letter a head start by implying that recommending Sarah is an honor. And that’s more likely to get the recruiter’s attention - or, at least, curiosity. 

In case you’re struggling to come up with an attention-grabbing introduction, simply mention one of the following points, and you’re good to go: 

  • A little-known fact about the candidate. 
  • Your general consideration of the candidate’s qualities.
  • A remarkable achievement or award the candidate might have won.  

Tip #2. Establish a Meaningful Relationship With the Candidate 

All recommendation letters explain what the relationship with the referee is before listing their skills and qualifications. 

To make the recommendation more meaningful, you should show the recruiter you are just the right person to attest to the candidate’s abilities. And that’s not something you can convey by simply stating how you know them. Take the following example:   

I have taught Jake Political Science for four years. 

Does this example tell the recruiter how you know the applicant? Sure, it does. 

But it does so in a boring way and without establishing a convincing relationship with them. For all the recruiter knows, Jake is just one out of a thousand students you’ve taught over the years.

It has been a pleasure for me to teach Jake for four years and guide him through his remarkable Bachelor’s thesis in Conflict Resolution.

Notice the difference? This example specifies the writer is Jake’s thesis advisor, which makes the recommendation all the more meaningful. 

Tip #3. Tailor Your Recommendation to the Application 

Want to put in the extra effort and make sure your referee truly stands out?

Tailor the recommendation letter to the job / university program they’re applying for.

Tailoring your letter to the candidate’s application is easiest when you’re recommending someone for employment (you can just check the job requirements), but it works for any type of recommendation (incl. academic). All you need to do is match the referee’s skills and strengths to whatever they’re applying for. 

Let’s assume, for example, that you’re recommending a co-worker for a marketing manager position.

Some of the job requirements are: 

  • +5 years of professional experience in marketing
  • Experience developing marketing campaigns 
  • Excellent communication skills 
  • Project-management and multi-tasking skills 

To tailor your recommendation to the job requirements, all you need to do is mention them as your referee’s best qualities. For example: 

Even after seven years working together, Ema’s skillful way of effectively communicating with clients and co-workers alike doesn’t cease to amaze me. It only comes second to her multi-tasking abilities, which I’ve witnessed throughout the many marketing campaigns we have developed and managed. 

As you can see, there’s not much to it. 

All you need to do is check the job requirements, pick several skills and qualifications, and make them part of your referee’s top skills, strengths, or personality traits.  

Tip #4. List the Candidate’s Achievements 

Mentioning some of the candidate’s achievements is another great way to help your referee really stand out.

After all, skills, strengths, and character traits are awesome, but they can also come across as meaningless if you can’t back them up with facts. 

What do we mean by this?

Let us explain:

Here’s how a typical personal story in a recommendation letter looks like:

I came to truly appreciate Eric’s work ethic, passion, and attention to detail the first time I assigned him to do a report on child trafficking. Eric was respectful of journalistic ethics but also willing to chase the story relentlessly, believing in its value and importance. 

Sure, this is a perfectly acceptable personal story. 

However, it doesn’t do much more than just list the referee’s skills, traits, and work experience through a subjective lens. 

What we’re saying is, it doesn’t really sell the candidate.

Now, let’s compare it to the following:

Eric’s ability to chase after difficult stories first became apparent when I assigned him a report about child trafficking. Despite the challenging topic, Eric not only pulled through but achieved more than expected by a) identifying a trafficking ring that put more than 50 minors into forced begging, b) interviewing 10 of the older minors and managing to bring that trafficking network down once the reportage went public and c) increasing the TV Channel’s ratings by 40% in 3 weeks. 

By mentioning those achievements, your account of the candidate’s experiences is a lot more “factual,” as well as impressive for the recruiter.

Tip #5. Polish Up Your Recommendation Letter

Finally, here’s 5 more simple tips to get your recommendation letter ready:

  • Maintain positive rhetoric . At no point throughout your reference letter should the recruiter sense a hint of doubt regarding the applicant’s skills and qualifications.
  • Don’t overdo the positivity. Extremes are never good - which means being overly positive might also come across as a bit suspicious or weird (even if everything you're saying is true). 
  • Follow the submission instructions . A bunch of employers, but also educational institutions, will provide instructions on how to submit the recommendation letter. We recommend you ask the candidate to double-check them and give you a heads up, because if you submit the recommendation letter wrong, the candidate might lose their chance.
  • Use a business tone . Even when you’re being creative, your writing tone should maintain a business tone - polite, and as formal as possible.
  • Mind your grammar and spelling . This is another tip that goes for all things application-related. You won’t compromise the referee’s chances with a typo, but your recommendation won’t matter much either if it’s filled with simple grammar/spelling mistakes. Run your letter through a grammar and spell-check app once you’re finished with it, just to be on the safe side of things.

A reference list is a page with a list of your references and their contact information. Send this letter as part of your job application if it is requested. Employers who ask for a reference list might call or email the people on that list and ask them for more information about you.

When creating your reference list, be sure to first ask permission from each person on your list. Not only is this polite, but this will give each person time to prepare a response for the employer. Make sure you provide all the necessary contact information for each person.

Sharing your ideas will assist your teacher in writing you an insightful and specific letter. This guide will discuss what materials you should produce, and why your "recommender's packet" can go a long way toward making your final letter outstanding.

To start, let’s review why recommendations are important to your application. If you understand what admissions officers look for, then you can make sure that your materials are useful and relevant. With this in mind, let's consider what purpose rec letters serve in the admission process.

Why Do Colleges Require Recommendation Letters?

Many four-year colleges require one or two recommendation letters from your teachers and school counselor. The main reason for this requirement is to get to know you better. Colleges aren’t just looking at your grades and SAT scores. They’re seeking to learn about you in a holistic sense - how you interact with your teachers and peers, how you approach the learning process, and what motivates and excites you, to give a few examples.

Teachers can speak to both your intellectual and personal qualities , as well as to the role you play in the classroom on a day to day basis. Simply having an enthusiastic recommendation shows that you made a positive impression and maintained a good relationship with your teachers. If you made a splash at high school, you’re likely to work well with your peers and professors at college and contribute on campus too.

Because of all the information and support they can communicate, recommendation letters play a very important role in the college application review process. Given their weight in the admissions decision, what makes some letters stand out while others blend into the background?

What Goes Into a Good Letter of Recommendation?

As I mentioned above, you should share your ideas and information with your teacher recommenders, who can refer to your packet when they sit down to write your letter. However, you want to make sure your materials are useful. Without knowing what makes some letters good and others bad , you’d have a hard time knowing what kind of info to share.

So, in a nutshell, a good letter of rec is insightful, personal, and enthusiastic. While your teacher should talk about your intellectual abilities and attitude towards learning, she should also speak to personal qualities , like empathy, creativity, or leadership skills.

Just as importantly, she should be specific and demonstrative. By this, I mean that she should describe particular instances where you demonstrated your strengths . In a sense, her anecdotes can prove that her descriptions of you are accurate.

On the flip side, a bad letter may sound lukewarm and generic . It may sidestep talking about your personal qualities and instead only list data, like grades and test scores. An ineffective letter would also be unspecific and lack examples, making it effectively impersonal, even vague.

Based on these elements of a good letter, you can put together a “recommender’s packet” that will be useful to your letter writers. You can provide the type of information - your academic interests and goals, your personal strengths and values, and memorable anecdotes from class - that your teacher can incorporate to make her letter stand out.

Generally, this recommenders' packet will be provided for you by your guidance office. If it’s not for some reason, you would still be well served to put it together yourself. Read on to learn more about what kind of info should go into this packet!

What Information Should You Provide for Your Recommenders?

Once you ask you teacher for a letter and she agrees, you should share the following materials:

  • Practical information , like to what schools she should send her rec letter, how to submit, and your deadlines.
  • What you plan to study at college (if you know).
  • What strengths, passions, of qualities you would like her to highlight in her letter.
  • Special projects or memories from class that were significant to you.
  • Your resume .
  • Your brag sheet (this document is especially important, which I’ll describe in more detail below).

The first few points on this list shouldn’t take too long to record, but other components, like your resume and brag sheet, may require 15 or more hours of work. Let’s break down each component in more detail so you know what it is, why it’s important, and how you can prepare.

Practical Information - Where, What, and When

Perhaps it goes without saying that you have to give your recommenders the bare necessities: a list of colleges to which she should send her letter, instructions on how to submit, and, of course, your deadlines.

Some teachers may upload their letters to your school's online application, others to the Common Application, and still others to the e-docs software, Naviance. Let your teacher know what method she'll be using.

What You Need to Do

Ideally, you have your list of colleges and deadlines on hand when you make your request. If you’re asking especially early - maybe you’re asking your beloved 10th grade English teacher at the end of the year - then you can follow up with this information later.

Remember that your teacher may have many letters to write, along with everything else she’s up to - so write everything down. That way she can refer to this information when she sits down to write your letter.

Share all your deadlines , and send a reminder about a week before if you see that she hasn’t submitted her letter yet. Once she does submit, make sure to send a thank you note for her help in getting into college.

What Skills and Interests You’d Like Highlighted

Maybe you’re asking your English teacher because you plan to study creative writing, and you’d love her to speak to your writing abilities. Perhaps you’re asking your Physics teacher so she can talk about your innovative contributions to the Robotics Club she supervises.

Depending on your comfort level and relationship with your teacher, you wouldn’t be crossing a line if you explicitly stated what skills, qualities, or goals you’d like her to highlight in your letter.

As mentioned above, the most effective recommendation letters speak to your intellectual and personal qualities. By sharing your ideas, you could ensure that your teacher includes your academic and personal strengths.

I’m not suggesting that you tell your recommender how to write her letter. You could keep what you say short and sweet , something like, “I’d really love if you could include my skill / interest / talent in (fill in the blank here).”

Make sure that the skill, interest, or talent you mention is appropriate for a rec letter . A passion for a subject, insightful comments in class, or a willingness to take on special projects would be worth mentioning. Your daredevil balancing stunts in tall places may be less relevant. 

This small amount of input could actually help provide your teacher with a theme around which to focus her letter.

Let your teacher know what you learned from her class.

What You Learned and Accomplished In Class

Similarly, you might remind your teacher about a memorable project you worked on or lesson that was especially meaningful from class. If you had any notable achievements or important moments, you could describe them to your teacher.

Since the best rec letters use specific examples , your input could be a useful reminder. Maybe you worked on a special research project or excelled in a debate. Perhaps reading A Brave New World changed your perspective on life. Maybe your teacher’s class helped you discover you want to be a World History major.

Whatever you took away from her class, it could be useful to share. Your input could help make her letter even more specific. If nothing else, your teacher will appreciate hearing that her class made an impact on your thinking.

Before requesting your recommendation, list out your reasons for asking this teacher. Think about any stand out projects or instances where you went beyond requirements. Consider times that you contributed to a discussion, or perhaps had a thought-provoking conversation you had with your teacher. 

Write these moments down, and share them with your teacher when you make your request. As with above, you don't want to come off like you're writing the letter for your teacher.

You could say something short and to the point , like, “I learned a ton from your class and was hoping you could provide me with a recommendation for college. One of my favorite projects was…”

Since teacher recommendation letters provide a micro-view of you as a student - they got to know you on a day to day basis - they should include specifics from your class performance. Your teacher should have examples in mind, but it shouldn’t hurt for you to share your own memories too!

Your Resume

All students should include a resume in their recommender’s packet. Your teacher will mainly write about you in the context she knew you - as a student in her class. However, it’s also helpful for her to know what other responsibilities you balanced and what other activities you’re interested in, especially if they connect to her subject. For instance, maybe your Physics teacher will see that you pursued your passion for mechanical engineering for three years in Robotics Club. 

As described above, your teacher shouldn’t repeat your whole resume and fill your letter with data. However, it is useful for them to have context and learn more about what you’ve been up to in high school. Your resume, therefore, is an essential document to give your recommenders to help them write your letter.

People style their resumes based on personal taste, but the best ones include certain key elements: a summary of skills, a list of activities and work experiences with brief descriptions, and any awards or achievements. You want to include your dates of involvement , and you may state an objective at the top.

You should check out some samples and choose the format that works best for your experiences. Apart from providing a resume, you should be prepared to talk about what you learned from your experiences , especially as any relate to your teacher’s class or your academic goals for college.

Even if your teacher doesn’t sit down to speak with you about it, you may provide these reflections in written form in your brag sheet. That way you can communicate not just what you did in high school, but what each experience meant to you.

Your Brag Sheet

Finally, we get to the brag sheet, perhaps the most significant part of your packet. Your guidance department should provide you with this document, and its questions may vary from school to school. Whatever version you use, it should include prompts that ask you to think about your experiences, identity, and goals.

Rather than giving quick, cliche answers, you should try to dig deep. Even if it feels vulnerable, being honest and revealing is the best way to communicate something real, important, and authentic. Ideally, your recommender already knows you well, but your brag sheet should help her get to know you even better.

Some prompts may include:

  • Describe your family. How have your parents influenced you? What qualities of theirs do you admire?
  • What three adjectives would you use to describe yourself? What adjectives would your teachers use? Your parents? Give specific examples or stories of a time you exemplified each one of these qualities.
  • Discuss an academic interest or passion.
  • Describe an involvement that’s had a significant impact on you.
  • How do you spend your free time?
  • What have you learned about yourself since the time you started high school? How have you changed or grown?
  • Describe a significant challenge or obstacle you’ve had to overcome. How did you do so, and what did you learn from it?
  • Describe an experience that changed your thinking or perspective on an issue.

Depending on your school, your brag sheet may be more or less thorough (or may not exist at all). If you feel you have more to share, you could add your own questions and answers. Besides adding more info, what else can you do to make your brag sheet as useful and telling as it can be?

As you can see, the questions on a brag sheet are quite personal. They’re tough to answer immediately. Instead, they call for some serious introspection and self-awareness. Don’t worry if your first reaction is to go blank. It takes some time to reflect on these questions and come up with answers that feel genuine and meaningful.

One way to dig deeper might be to sit with a question and jot down any ideas that come to mind. For instance, let’s say you’re trying to describe an involvement that’s important to you. You might write down your participation in track team. Then you should ask yourself a simple question: why?

Maybe track team has enhanced your confidence. Again, ask yourself, Why? Maybe you’re continuously breaking your personal records and showing yourself that you can redefine your sense of limitations.

You can keep asking yourself "why" to get to something that resonates with you - maybe your achievements in running have spread into other areas in your life by showing that if you endure discomfort in the moment, you can break through to a new level that you didn’t know was possible.

Then again, another student might value track team because of the friendships she made there. Maybe she felt a strong sense of belonging with her track team, and this connectedness showed her that she can adapt to any new social situation.

If you keep asking yourself why and defining your reasons, then your answer may look very different - and much more revealing - than where you started. Two students may write about their involvement in track, but they may value the experience for very different reasons. And this says something different about who they are and what's important to them.  

Your brag sheet will help your teacher write an insightful letter that reveals your character, personality, and values. They may also include significant circumstances in your family or personal background , if you're comfortable sharing them. All of this insight will help admissions officers get to know you on a deeper level . 

Your letters should give admissions committees a fuller sense of who you are as a student and person . By giving this same well-rounded sense to your teachers, you will give them all the materials they need - along with the relationship they’ve already established with you - to write a personal and effective letter of recommendation.

Of course, the foundation of your letters is how you performed in class over the year and got to know your teachers. Thinking about and producing your materials should take a few weeks of planning. You should expect to spend about 15 hours or more on creating and proofreading your resume and brag sheet.

You shouldn’t scribble off fast answers to your brag sheet prompts; instead, take the time to sit with these questions and dig deeply , continually challenging yourself to get to the root of your answers by asking, “Why?” as in the example above. Your responses will not only jog your teacher’s memory and teach her new things about you, but they will also show her how much effort and planning you’re putting into your college applications.

Hopefully, you’ve asked a teacher who supports you and knows you well. By putting in the effort to share your ideas, resume, and brag sheet, you can be confident you’ve done everything in your power to acquire an excellent letter of recommendation.
