Way Too Much Traffic Very Noisey At Night Time Too Many Strangers And There Are Mean People But Worst Of All There Are No Houses There Whatever You Do Do Not Move To A Big City Or Else There Is A Lot Of Trouble Coming Ahead
Nov 08, 2018

I liked the pros and cons, but I just felt like it was too short, you know? The ones you gave were helpful but I don’t like that there was only one pro and only two cons. I thought your essay would be a bit longer, and I liked what you said, but just not enough. Thanks for the tips though!!!!😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Congratulations Miss Claudia for your essay. It is well structured giving evidence about the positive points of living in a large city as well about the negative aspects.

The only thing that I found out was the use of the word **whenever** when I guess it should be **wherever** . I quess it was a mistake due to the haste and rush to finish and hand in the essay.

Again, thsnks for sharing your essay with us. Blessings.

AOA! Sir u also wrote it very nicely n proficient but I also wanna give my advice which is about the main disadvantage of life itna big city is that the amount of CO2 increases day by day. From burning the fossil fuels and vice versa n increasing in the amount of different transportation. Thus the amount of O2 decreases by replacing the tress and establishing the different buildings or opening of facilities. I'm not at least 16 I m at 14 ☺

Essays About City Life: Comparing city life and country life

Urban life and country life are two very different things. If you’ve experienced living in both the country and city, this is the topic for your essay. Discuss similarities and differences between the typical lifestyles in the city and country. Consider also the emotions or mindsets of people who live in each environment.

While cities provide great educational and financial resources, they can also be risky. The smog, fast food, and unhealthy lifestyle practices are the main causes of declining physical health. Some people in the city are also ruthless, rude, and indifferent to others, causing unnecessary stress to those they encounter. Thus, city life can cause issues with a person’s mental and physical health.

The city is full of opportunities, conveniences, and activities for everyone. Entertainment events like sports events and shows are always available. You can find more schools and universities in some cities where your kids can get a better education. Even though the cost of living is more expensive in the city, you can also earn a higher salary. Those are the best benefits of living an urban lifestyle. Consider reading about other benefits or discuss your observations from your experience.

Massachusetts is the home of many great cities, including Boston, Cambridge, and Pittsfield. Depending on where you live , the lifestyle in each MA-based city is unique. It is the essay topic for you if you’ve moved around or have tried living in different areas in Massachusetts. You can also change Massachusetts to a state you’re more familiar with to fit your essay better.

Did you come from the country and move into the city to study or work? Express your emotions and thoughts about how adapting to the city changed you in this essay. You can also compare your typical lifestyle in the country and city here.

This is the perfect essay topic for you if you’re moving from a small town or the country to a big city. Include the survival tips and tricks you learned or realized when you moved to the big city. You can also describe what you expected before moving to the big city and the reality that faced you after the move.

City life can lack the meditative silence that village life provides. It’s full of people who want to take advantage of you, whether at work, on the street, or in your relationships. These experiences, while not universal to urbanites, can affect a person’s mental and physical health. Use this essay writing opportunity to describe how you dealt with bad experiences in the city and the lessons you learned.

For art or fashion-focused students, the city life provides a myriad of colorful opportunities for self-expression. Almost every kind of fashion is acceptable in the city for many people. You’d see people in work attire, loungewear, and even out-of-this-world costumes on the street. If you want to share your idea or opinion about the fashion you’ve seen in cities, this is the essay topic.

Cities are melting pots for different people, cultures, practices, and attitudes. Thus, people who have lived their lives within a city are more open-minded and have universal practices. This topic is a great choice, whether you’re from the country who visited the city or an urbanite who visited the countryside. Discuss the practices strange to you or the people around you when you visit other places and compare them to the normal thing to do in the city.

Living in a City: Advantages and Disadvantages

People are usually faced with different options when deciding on where to live. That is do they want to live in the city or would they prefer to live in the suburbs where it is more peaceful. The essay that follows intends to show the advantages and disadvantages of city life. Before someone settles down, one has to consider the life that he or she prefers. The essay will give comparison and contrast between the advantages and disadvantages of city life.

There are certain advantages that come with life in the city. One of the biggest advantages that life in the city presents is the ease in the accessibility of educational institutions, business centers and trade. A critical analysis of city life shows that most educational institutions are located in the city. Majority of colleges and universities are located in the city. This causes students who live outside the city tom incur transport costs everyday so that they can reach their educational institutions.

Another advantage that comes with city life is that no transport costs are incurred. This is because business centers are located in the city. Schools are also in the city and the two distances between school and home or work and home is just a walking distance. This helps to save the costs of transport that would otherwise have been incurred if the person had been living far from the city. There is little or no driving involved simply because the supermarket is just around the corner. There is provision of public transportation as a way of cutting down on the fumes being released in the atmosphere.

The close proximity of these educational institutions and work places also saves time. The time that would have been wasted in trying to connect the two areas is saved. Living in the city therefore helps to save the time that would have been otherwise wasted in commuting.

Those people living in the city can also reduce expenses. The money that would have otherwise have been used in eating at a hotel is saved. Living in the city enables one to go home during lunch and eat there rather than eating at a hotel. Those living away from the city have to incur the expenses of eating out in hotels and this entails big spending even though it is affordable.

There are also disadvantages that come with living in the city. One of them is the high crime rate that exists in the city. This can be attributed to the fact that a variety of all sorts of people is found in the city.

Another problem present in the city is the pollution rate. Even though the number of vehicles is greatly reduced, there is wide spread pollution due to the numerous numbers of industries that are present in the city.

The presence of buildings everywhere in the city is another problem that is faced in the city. All the trees are cut down to provide rental space and therefore little fresh air can be found in the city. Life in the suburbs is great as there is plenty of land and trees are everywhere. This provides a serene environment where there is plenty of fresh air to be enjoyed as compared to the city where almost every space is filled up with buildings.

One of the benefits of suburban life is the privacy that is experienced by the people living in this place. This sort of privacy enables people to get to know each other as compared to the city where people are always too busy with their lives to want to know even who their next neighbor is.

One disadvantage of suburban life is the fact that taxation is scarce and therefore the social amenities are not adequately advanced or equipped. Comparing this to life in the city shows, that taxation in the city is high and therefore there are adequate funds make equipping public places such as libraries easy.

A comparison between the city and the suburbs shows that both places experience crimes. Though the city has higher incidences of crime and violence, the suburbs also receive their own fair share of crimes. This one thing is common to both city life and suburban life.

To conclude, both the city and suburbs have their own advantages and disadvantages. Both of them experience violence and crime. Pollution rate is high in the city while there is plenty of fresh air in the suburbs where trees exist in great numbers. Since both places have their own pros and cons, the choice of where to stay depends mainly on a person’s lifestyle and preferences.

City Life – Why people prefer to live in cities?

City living can have many positive impacts compared to rural life. Because of these benefits, most of the world’s population live in cities now. While the rural lifestyle is less stressful, city lifestyle has a lot of people and many advantages for people. With a rapid increase in urban growth, cities are becoming lucrative. It’s more likely people will walk in parks or get more exercise in city life than to their rural counterparts. Living in the city is becoming a new normal and people now prefer living in major cities inspite of higher cost of living. There are some negatives to city life, such as stressful lifestyles and fast-paced life. These have to be tolerated to live in a good city. Obesity is also high in urban areas because of loss of exercise. In rural areas, people do a lot of manual work which helps maintain their stress and obesity levels. People might also know each other more personally in rural areas as compared to cities. Although it is important to think of both sides, this article will focus on the advantages of living in the city rather than in rural areas or the countryside.

Here are some advantages of living in a big city:

Availability of services & facilities, good connectivity, municipality & proper sewage systems, proper infrastructure, environment friendly and cultural diversity, availability of internet and other facilities.

People always tend to choose cities to live in. This is due to the presence of a larger scope for enjoying services and improved facilities and, therefore, enjoying a better quality of living. The benefits of cities are innumerable and are always plus points. Especially for those looking for better opportunities in life and achieving more in the fields they are interested in. With the advancement of technology, cities are becoming bigger and more sophisticated, and more and more opportunities are opening up towards a brighter and happier future.

Model Essay 1

The debate between urban and rural living has been longstanding, each presenting unique advantages. Some advocate for the bustling life of the city, citing endless opportunities and amenities, while others favor the tranquility and simplicity of countryside living. This essay argues that both lifestyles have their merits, yet the choice largely depends on individual preferences and life stages.

City life is synonymous with convenience and myriad opportunities, drawing people with its blend of advanced healthcare, top-tier educational institutions, and a rich tapestry of cultural experiences. Metropolises like New York and London epitomize career advancement, offering a spectrum of industries and robust professional networks that are magnets for career-oriented individuals. The vibrancy of urban living is unparalleled, with a cornucopia of entertainment options and social gatherings ensuring a dynamic lifestyle. Yet, this vibrancy comes at a price: the cost of living can be steep, and the unrelenting pace often breeds stress and a sense of isolation among its inhabitants, highlighting the complexity of urban life's benefits against its drawbacks.

Conversely, the countryside presents a vastly different allure, appealing to those yearning for tranquility and a close-knit community ethos. Rural life is defined by its leisurely pace, fostering strong community ties and a profound connection with nature, offering a stark contrast to urban hustle. The picturesque landscapes of areas like the English Lake District or the Tuscan hills serve as serene havens from urban bustle, where the lower cost of living and a more salubrious environment are tangible benefits. However, the idyllic rural life comes with its challenges: the accessibility of services and job opportunities is limited, which could be a significant deterrent for individuals seeking professional development or accustomed to the conveniences of city life, thereby presenting a nuanced choice between the simplicity of rural living and the dynamic urban experience.

In conclusion, both city and countryside living offer distinct advantages and limitations. The choice between the two ultimately hinges on one's lifestyle preferences, career ambitions, and values. While cities dazzle with their promise of opportunity and excitement, the countryside enchants with its simplicity and peace.

Model Essay 2

The debate over whether urban or rural living offers a superior quality of life is a topic of much contention. It is my view that while city life presents unparalleled opportunities for professional advancement and cultural exposure, the countryside offers a tranquil, healthier environment conducive to well-being. This essay will explore the merits of both settings in detail.

Cities, celebrated for their dynamic cultural landscapes, offer a diverse tapestry of entertainment, dining, and educational opportunities, enriching residents' lives. Metropolitan areas, vibrant and bustling, typically host an array of museums, theaters, and galleries that not only provide residents with direct access to the arts but also promote an environment of continual personal and communal enrichment. Urban centers, acting as the epicenter of innovation and employment, present a myriad of career opportunities across various sectors. This diversity in professional avenues allows individuals to embark on ambitious career paths, harnessing the potential for growth and achievement that is often less accessible in less populated areas, thereby underscoring the city's role in shaping pioneering minds and careers.

In stark contrast, rural living embodies a slower pace of life, deeply intertwined with nature's serene rhythms, which is pivotal for mental and physical well-being. The countryside, with its expansive landscapes, fresh air, and a closely-knit community, cultivates a sense of belonging and mutual support, paramount for a harmonious life. These elements play a crucial role in diminishing stress and elevating the quality of life, creating a sanctuary for those seeking tranquility. The proximity to nature in rural areas not only fosters an appreciation for the environment but also encourages an active lifestyle through activities like hiking and gardening. This natural setting promotes a healthier lifestyle, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life and serving as a bastion for those valuing peace, health, and community connection.

In conclusion, city life offers dynamic cultural richness and career opportunities, whereas the countryside provides tranquility and a sense of community. The preference between urban and rural living varies with individual desires and life stages, making the ideal choice one that best suits personal needs and aspirations.

  • THE CITIES ISSUE

How the pros and cons of city living vary around the world

Every day, more people become city dwellers. The challenge of urban existence is to balance its benefits and its drawbacks.

For most of the six million years of human evolution , all humans and protohumans lived like somewhat glorified chimpanzees , at low population densities, scattered over the landscape as families or small bands. Only within the past 6,000 years, a small fraction of human history, did some of our ancestors come together in cities. But today more than half the world’s people live in these new settings, some of which have tens of millions of inhabitants.

Urban life involves trade-offs. We may gain big benefits in return for suffering big disadvantages. Let’s consider two of them: the trade-off between individual freedom and community interests, and the trade-off between social ties and anonymity.

To understand the issue of freedom, take first the city of Singapore , in effect one of the world’s most densely populated micro-countries. Singapore’s nearly six million people are packed into about 250 square miles—230 times the average U.S. population density. It’s an Asian financial center, a major port on one of the world’s busiest shipping straits, and a tiny piece of prime real estate wedged between two giant, powerful neighbors, Indonesia and Malaysia. Singapore was part of Malaysia until 1965, when economic and racial tensions spurred its separation. But Singapore depends on Malaysia for most of its water and much of its food, and can’t afford to make mistakes or provoke its neighbors.

Singapore citizens’ bargain with their government: less individual freedom in return for First World living standards.

So Singapore’s government monitors its citizens closely, to make sure that individuals don’t harm the community. Inspectors check for water standing in each household’s pots, lest they furnish breeding sites for disease-transmitting mosquitoes. Smart-technology sensors measure (or will measure) the traffic on every street, the movements of every car, and the temperatures of and shadows cast by buildings. They also will track the water and electricity consumption of every household and will note the time whenever a household toilet is flushed. Americans may view such measures with horror, as George Orwell’s novel 1984 come true. But for Singapore’s citizens, it’s the bargain that they have made with their government: less individual freedom in return for First World living standards, health, and security.

Next consider Germany’s cities, also densely populated. Local governments have rules about the shapes and colors of tiles that Germans may use on their houses’ roofs, and about the sizes and ages of trees that they can or can’t cut down on their property. To obtain a fishing license, Germans must attend many hours of fishing classes, then pass a 60-question exam. Most Americans would bristle at such restrictions. But benefits to German communities include beautiful regional architecture , green cities, government support for the arts, and healthy fish populations.

At the opposite extreme comes my own city of Los Angeles, where rights of the individual property owner are prized as sacred. The result is a free-for-all, in which many individuals and communities suffer disadvantages. Almost any style of house is permissible; local architectural character is nonexistent. Tree cover is vanishing, temperatures are rising, and landowners’ excavated dirt and sprayed pesticides end up on neighbors’ property. To fish in the local bay waters, anyone can buy a fishing license—no questions asked—so of course fish populations decline.

The outcomes of trade-offs differ for Singapore, Germany, and L.A. because different geographies and histories have led to different customs. Population density is highest in Singapore, intermediate in Germany, lowest in the United States (including California). China—whence the ancestors of most of Singapore’s population arrived—has had cities for five millennia, Germany for two millennia, the United States for just a few centuries. Chinese traditional farming is communal; Germans have close-packed individual farms; and U.S. frontier settlements had self-sufficient, widely scattered families. The cultural legacies of those differences live on today.

Another issue of urban life is the trade-off between social ties and anonymity. Traditional living arrangements still practiced today in rural areas of New Guinea, where I’ve been working since the 1960s, resemble those formerly practiced in pre-urban Western societies. New Guinea villagers live out their lives where they were born, constantly surrounded by lifelong friends and social support.

How rats became an inescapable part of city living

A first reaction of many lonely, urban Americans is: How heartwarmingly wonderful! When New Guinea villagers move to cities, they find themselves surrounded by strangers, their friends few or recent or scattered across the city. The frequent results are unhappy isolation, decline of social support, and proliferation of urban crime.

Still, we American city dwellers shouldn’t romanticize traditional village living arrangements. My New Guinea friends tell me that those arrangements are also socially suffocating, and limit individuals’ abilities to realize their potential. In New Guinea villages, everybody knows, constantly watches, and incessantly discusses what everybody else is doing.

As a result, a New Guinea friend who spent years living in a U.S. city loved it—because (as she told me) she could sit alone and read a newspaper in peaceful anonymity in a sidewalk café, without being importuned by fellow clan members asking her for money and bewailing their troubles. New Guineans have learned to appreciate the modern urban inventions of opaque bags and trouser pockets—because those inventions permit them to conceal things from neighbors and thereby to acquire small luxuries without becoming targets of village comment. Thus, New Guineans recognize drawbacks as well as heartwarming benefits of village life. They also understand the benefits, not just the pains, of urban anonymity.

It all comes down to compromises. As the world becomes increasingly urban, will all of us be forced to adopt more of Singapore’s solutions? If a government meter that records every flushing of your toilet is part of the price you’d have to pay for living in safety, health, affluence, and beautiful surroundings, what would you choose?

Below is a sample IELTS Essay for the IELTS Essay topic:

Some people believe that living in big cities is becoming more difficult. Others believe that it is getting easier. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. OR Describe the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city.

There has been much debate about whether city life is harder or easier. While it is argued that it is more difficult to live there, I think there are more comforts of urban life.

City dwellers may be confronted with various problems. The first matter can be the higher cost of living than that in villages or other smaller towns because urban citizens might have to pay higher prices for transport service or household bills. Secondly, high population density in urban areas may cause overcrowding , followed by a lack of open spaces for green trees or other recreational activities for metropolitan residents . Finally, together with thousands of tons of daily emissions discharged from families or offices, a huge quantity of fumes are released from motor street vehicles or metropolitan factories, leading to air and water pollution. In other words, there may be a deterioration in the quality of air and water ; consequently, health conditions are likely to be threatened.

However, in my view, city life is becoming easier in several cases. Well-known universities, schools at the international level, or other high-quality educational centers located in metropolitan zones generate advantages for city inhabitants to enjoy better educational opportunities to increase their knowledge level . Another factor to make urban life easier is that thanks to the governmental financial investment in improvements in public transport systems like bus or underground services in cities, urban residents’ travel can be facilitated. Furthermore, metropolitan citizens may enhance their spiritual life or enjoy relaxing moments by going to the cinema and theater or spending time in art galleries as well as museums.

In conclusion, although there are numerous difficulties of residing in metropolitan areas, from my point of view, it is increasingly easier to spend life in big urban areas on the basis of my above-mentioned analyses and explanation.

essay on advantages of living in a city

The Advantages of Living in a Multicultural City Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Introduction

Works cited.

The president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, said, “We are going forward with the idea of multicultural, multinational state, trying to live in unity, at the same time respecting our diversity…But we need to all come together so we can live united” (“20 Quotes Praising Cultural Diversity.”). Today, it is not unusual to see people of all races, ethnic backgrounds, or cultural groups living in one city. For some people, living in multicultural environments makes them feel uncomfortable because they do not want to integrate into another culture.

However, it can not be denied that living in a multicultural city can teach people a lesson that they were previously learning only through books, news, or the internet. Living in a multicultural city provides one with multiple benefits such as having opportunities to learn about other cultures, developing a better understanding of different cultures, and having more chances to improve one’s personality.

First, living in a multi-cultural environment gives more options to know and understand other cultures. The culture is further enriched by the influx of immigrants from over the world who all come to live in one city. People can find out differences in traditions, food, appearance, and personal habits when they live in a city with different cultures. For instance, in America, while talking, people can completely disagree with the opinion of the opponent and make constructive contributions.

However, in Asian counties, people are less likely to show their disagreements. By meeting people from other cultures, one has the opportunity to learn about such nuances and be more respectful of the differences of other people. This knowledge can later help a person in his or her travels around the world. By becoming culturally aware through daily interactions with representatives of other cultures, one could adapt more easily when visiting their home countries. Having such an understanding of cultural nuances prevents people from situations where one may offend another with a careless gesture or word.

In addition to that, living side by side with other nations builds tolerance in people. All countries and cultures have negative and positive sides, things that they could do better. By going to the same school, college, using public transport, eating in restaurants, and doing other things as parts of one society, people learn how to be mindful of other cultures. Differences can at times cause problems and misunderstandings but through frequent daily communication, they may be bridged. No doubt that becoming a better person will require lots of strength and resilience, but in a multicultural city, it can be achieved easier than in a monocultural one.

People can learn different languages when they live in a multicultural city. There is no better and more effective way to learn a language than to be immersed in a culture that they are trying to learn. Of course, it could be better to visit a home country of the language one is trying to learn but it is not always possible and maybe financially burdening. Living in a city where there may be a community of native speakers is a much cheaper way to achieve proficiency in a foreign language. One can even make new acquaintances and friends while communicating and learning how to speak in a different language, which is another bonus of the multicultural cities.

According to some of the researchers, Los Angeles is one of the most multicultural cities in the world populated by representatives of around 140 countries speaking 86 different languages (Teixeira 450). Los Angeles created a truly exciting cultural scene. It is filled with cultural neighborhoods such as Koreatown, Chinatown, Little Tokyo, or Thai-town. For example, the area of a city where many Chinese people live and where you can find many Chinese shops and restaurants is called Chinatown.

People go there because they want to explore the culture, food, traditions, and other peculiarities of the Chinese nation. Such cultural variety allows people to imitate traveling to multiple other countries and learn their ways while staying within one city. It is incredibly convenient, cheap, and exciting.

Living in multicultural cities enables people to have more opportunities to develop their personalities. Immersed in the intercultural environment, they can meet more people who are unlike them. It not only exposes them to different cultures and alternative ways of doing things, but it also helps broaden their horizons. Language and culture forces people to perceive things differently which creates an opportunity to share and compare views on the world. For example, the concepts of family and friendship can be a broad topic for discussion and mutual exchange of views. It is believed that the more points of view a person could understand and accept the broader his or her worldview. Cultural awareness in understanding different things makes a person more sensitive to other people.

People raised in multicultural cities can become better diplomats as they know how to communicate effectively with representatives of other cultures. Simply living in a city might not necessarily make a person a better diplomat, but it can help develop tolerance and understanding of different nations. Diplomats and ambassadors as people who frequently deal with negotiations and talks at the international level can benefit from such a multicultural experience.

All things considered, living in a multicultural city is better than in a monocultural one because people can learn other cultures, languages, bridge differences in understanding, become a better person and broaden one’s horizons. It is also a cheap and easy way to immerse oneself in a cultural environment without actually visiting another country. In a monocultural city, there is no way of knowing about other cultures besides books, news, and the internet, while in a multicultural one there is an opportunity of talking to the representatives of other countries. This enables cross-cultural exchange, builds tolerance, and facilitates mutual understanding between nations within cities.

Living in a Big City: Advantages and Disadvantages (2023)

essay on advantages of living in a city

City life is often romanticized. Books, television and movies have presented it as bursting from the seams with adventure, culture and a wealth of possibilities. Making it big in the big city has been a mantra for young people for decades, and not without good reason. But realistically, not everyone is going to enjoy the hustle and bustle of an urban environment. How do you decide whether you should be living in a big city?

It’s time to step back and take a careful look at your options. Like everything else, living in the city has advantages and disadvantages. Some are logistical, like expenses and housing. Others are deeply personal — family connections, job opportunities, sports teams, the list goes on.

If you’re considering a move to a big city, we’ll walk you through some things you should know as you move forward.

where should i live

Take Our Quiz:

Where Should I Live? Find the Perfect City for You

Advantages of Living in the City

Major metro areas are popular among millennials for a reason. Many of them have their heart set on city living after graduation, and it’s not hard to see why. When you’re ready to enter adulthood headfirst, here are a few advantages to living in a big city:

1. Entertainment Options

You never have a shortage of things to see and do when you move to a major metro area. Regardless of your preferences, you’ll find places that appeal to your interests, filled with like-minded people who share them. Whether you’re into loud clubs or quiet bookstores, you’ll find both in abundance.

While suburban and rural areas have their own social and cultural amenities, they aren’t on the same scale you’ll come across in the city. You’re also far more likely to see your favorite musical artists in major metros, as they have less incentive to visit small towns. If you’re looking for entertainment and cultural enrichment, cities are often ideal.

Furthermore, larger cities hold more communities and clubs that can help you connect with fellow residents. If you’re trying to make friends, it’s only a matter of narrowing down your interests and getting involved in activities full of other passionate people. In a small town, it’s far more unlikely you’ll be able to connect with friends who share a love for niche hobbies and events.

2. Career Opportunities

One of the biggest reasons graduates move to cities is career advancement. You’ll find more opportunities in the city, and a greater variety of opportunities as well. Whatever you studied, you’re likely to find a position where your education is relevant. In 2023, cities in the Sunbelt region such as Nashville and Austin have the fastest-growing job markets.

Established urban centers like LA and NYC are still viable, but other cities are becoming more attractive for young entrepreneurs. Job growth in the biggest cities has been slower than usual because the COVID-19 pandemic hit them the hardest. However, there still remains a combination of educational, economic and environmental factors that make big cities the best places to find new employment.

Furthermore, living in a big city is the only way for some people to advance their careers. For example, technology-oriented roles are packed into urban centers like San Francisco, New York and Seattle. Major business and financial centers tend to set up shop here, too. These career paths require young professionals to relocate to cities where more job positions can be found.

3. Public Transportation

The costs of owning a car can add up quickly. You have to account for car payments, insurance, registration fees and other expenses. When you work an entry-level position at a company early in your career, you can’t always justify that kind of investment. Even if you find a reasonable used car, one major repair can throw off your saving goals for the month.

people crossing the road

Fortunately, you have a range of options for public transportation when you live in a major metro area. The subway provides a relatively fast, convenient way to get from place to place, avoiding traffic. Plus, you might be able to focus on a book rather than keeping your eyes on the road — as long as the noise isn’t too distracting.

Of course, not every American city is well-equipped for public transportation. If you’re wondering whether your favorite hotspot has a reliable system, check out its rankings . If buses and subways are well-organized and frequently used, then it’s a safe bet to ditch your car before you move.

Disadvantages of Living in the City

While metro areas have their appeal, you’ll find the issue isn’t as one-sided as some might think. Urban living is great, with entertainment options, career opportunities and public transportation, but just like everything else, it has its downsides. Between traffic, crowding and higher expenses, life in a big city might just not be for you. What should you know before you start packing your things to move?

1. Higher Cost of Living

The cost of living is higher in the city than in suburban or rural areas. While there may be more job opportunities in the city, the cost of rent, food and entertainment will eliminate much of your monthly earnings. It’s typically cheaper to live in the suburbs rather than a downtown apartment. However, renting vs buying is a huge decision to make. If you’re spending more income on housing year-to-year, then you might have to put off any plans for property while living in the big city.

As a general rule, the biggest cities have the highest costs of living in the United States, like Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Denver and others. This also means you’re more likely to be sharing life with a roommate in order to pay a reasonable rent. It’s increasingly difficult to find an affordable apartment in the biggest cities. If you’re looking to live alone, then you may want to seriously rethink moving to the city.

More than this, you have other life expenses you need to consider when making the move to a major metro area. Dining, groceries and entertainment are usually more expensive in the city, and you might find yourself spending more than you’d like for a night out. While you have more options — an attractive advantage of city living — these options come at a price that some people would rather not pay.

2. Less Personal Space

If you value having lots of personal space, cities might not seem so appealing. The close quarters of subway cars and sidewalks aren’t for everyone, and it’s a significant change from life in a small town. When you weigh your options, consider whether you can handle walking among massive crowds of people or living in a small studio apartment.

a woman tending to the plants

You might not feel that way at all, and this “disadvantage” wouldn’t even occur to you if it weren’t on this list. On the other hand, the thought of people crowding you whenever you step out your front door could make you uncomfortable. If this is the case, you should reconsider making the move to a city. You might be happier in a quiet environment, where loud neighbors are less of a potential nuisance.

3. Large Population

The large population of major metro areas can create other unforeseen challenges in your daily life. You’ll find it far more difficult to find a parking space if you drive, and once you arrive at your destination, you’re still not in the clear. You might have to push through a crowd, wait longer for a table at restaurants or linger in a line.

Traffic is another important consideration. Country living often means empty roads and direct routes to the grocery store. While living in a big city, you’ll either be taking public transportation or careening down a highway in rush hour to pick up a few necessities. More people can mean more excitement, but this level of energy can be exhausting when you’re on the road.

It’s worth noting that populations in large urban areas saw a substantial decrease during the pandemic, but this decline has slowed or reversed in most cases. Big cities are still packed with people and will continue to grow. Something which shouldn’t challenge you in a small town could extend into an hour-long ordeal. As we’ve stated, big city living is convenient in many ways and inconvenient in others.

4. Fast-Paced Environment

Living life on the fast track can be thrilling. But it’s also more likely to lead to burnout. Culture depends on the city’s regional character, of course, but for the most part, city dwellers have a lot more on their plate. Detroit and Cleveland are the most stressed out cities in the US, and the gloomy yet fast-paced environment has a lot to do with it.

Consider whether you feel up to longer work hours, longer bus rides and an urge to hustle just to stay ahead. In a small town, it’s less common to compete for jobs with late-night expectations, and commutes are often a 10-minute drive. There’s nothing wrong with being sensitive to stress, and the magic of living in a big city will be lost on you if you end up frazzled by your day-to-day life.

Should You Be Living in a Big City?

Living in a big city isn’t all about glitz and glam. It’s an experience some people couldn’t imagine living without, but it repels others. Often, it’s a subject that people in your life will have strong opinions about, and it can be hard  to cut through the noise.

In the end, there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to your lifestyle. If living in the city has advantages you’re drawn to, then it’s worth overcoming some of the obstacles you might be dealing with.

And if suburban or rural life provides the stability and peace of mind you crave, then there’s nothing wrong with avoiding the crowds. Living in a big city has pluses and minuses, and hopefully we’ve helped you figure out which approach works best for you.

Essay 353 – Compare the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 353.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that cities are the best places to live. Others prefer to live in a rural area.

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city to living in the countryside.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

The debate on whether living in a city or a rural area is better has been ongoing for many years. While some people believe that cities are the best places to live, others prefer the tranquillity of the countryside. In this essay, I will compare the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city to living in the countryside.

To commence with the advantages of living in cities, they offer a range of opportunities, including better employment prospects, access to quality education, healthcare facilities, and a diverse range of cultural and entertainment options. For example, cities offer a broader range of job opportunities in various industries, which can lead to better career prospects and salaries. Such opportunities and amenities are often very limited in remote rural areas. Additionally, there are better educational facilities in cities, with more options for higher education, and access to more advanced healthcare facilities. Conversely, rural areas hardly have advanced medical facilities and better educational institutions. Cities also offer a diverse range of cultural and entertainment options such as museums, theatres, and sporting events which people will have a hard time finding in a village.

However, living in municipalities can also have its drawbacks. Cities are often congested, leading to traffic congestion, pollution, and high levels of noise. On the other hand, rural areas are free from traffic jams, noise and air pollution. Additionally, the cost of living in metropolises is often higher than in rural areas, with higher rent, food, and transportation costs. Moreover, there is a higher crime rate in cities than in rural areas, making it less safe to live in. On the other hand, living in rural areas offers a peaceful and relaxed way of life, with a stronger sense of community, and fewer crimes.

In conclusion, both living in cities and the countryside offer their own advantages and disadvantages. While cities offer better employment and education opportunities, a diverse range of cultural and entertainment options, and access to advanced healthcare facilities, they are often more congested, polluted, and noisy. Living in rural areas offers a peaceful and relaxed way of life, with lower living costs, and a closer connection to nature.

Nowadays, more and more people choose to live in the city. In this essay, I will discuss about the advantages and disadvantages of living in the city.

It can't be denied that living in the city has many benefits. First of all, if we live in the city, we will have many chances get the developing science and technology. It means that we will have more job opportunities and broaden our knowledge more easily. Secondly, we will have many different ways to spend our free time. There are a lot of theatres, concerts and other kinds of entertainment. There is always a lot to do and visit There are a lot of possibilities of shopping. In various shopping centres and galleries you can buy whatever you want. What is more, a big city is a potential market for trading activities, so we can earn more money to provide our family a comfortable life

Besides advantages, living in the city brings to us a lot of disadvantages. Firstly, a problem about which everyone is worrying is environment. The increase of factories based on industrialization and modernization has severely polluted environment. Smoke from factories' chimneys not only pollutes the air but also makes people get many serious cancers. Sewage is bumped into rivers without being purged, which threatens underwater ecosystems. The second drawback of living in the city is society's vices such as drug addiction. Young people. especially the students, are easily spoiled by bad habits. If people use up all the money, they can't control themselves and even become robbers or murders. Moreover, a problem that many people living in the city have is heartlessness. With some people, it's not worth being worried and it has no effect on our life, people are too busy to care for any others. But if more and more people become heartless, the society will be worse, no one cares another one, they live boring lives, every purposes became meaningless, without love, sympathy and many other good things.

There are good things as well as bad thing of living in the city. However, I strongly believed that advantages outweigh disadvantages. If people know how to live and enjoy their life, living in the city is one of the most interesting things that people want to experience.

Living in urban areas brings many great advantages. Firstly, it offers a great convenience of services to its dwellers. As a result, they stand the chance to receive the best possible healthcare and enjoy the entertainment options, as there is a huge range of recreational places and healthcare systems available in every city. Secondly, the urban areas open avenue for job hunting. Most of the corporate offices, factories, government offices, garments and companies are either situated in a city or close to the city. Finally, the recent advancements in technology and transportation comfort the urban lifestyle. The large number of transports facilities has made life easy to live in the metropolis areas and the commuting to work is not a problem. Furthermore, the media and means of communication enables people to get information, catch up with the latest. To sum up, living in a big city is generally considered to be beneficial in multiple ways.

It's undeniable that Living in a big city brings great advantages but also some significant drawbacks.

Big cities are major cultural centers that have vibrant art and music scenes, a wider variety of food, more places of interest such as museums, events like ball games and concerts, and a diverse population with a shared experience of city living. There is always something to do in a major city to keep people of all different interests from getting bored. Most cities have a lively nightlife, different types of food to try, shows of all types, museums, landmarks, parks, festivals, sports games, and much more. The public transportation system in major cities is a good alternative to driving yourself and dealing with the traffic and parking situation. Cities have trains or subways, buses, and plenty of taxis and ride sharing drivers so you can get where you need to go.

However, living in the urban areas still has many disadvantages. The higher cost of living is the first disadvantage that people typically think of when considering moving to a city. Cities have more people and more traffic that contribute to the noise, as well as trains and nearby airports with loud planes flying in and out. Special events such as concerts and ball games can also make a neighborhood louder and more congested.

To sum up, although life in the city is difficult, it also gives me many benefits.

Nowadays, large cities are becoming more and more inhabited. The majority of the population prefer living in a big town mainly because of the great advantages it has compared to living in the countryside. However, what are the benefits of this situation, and what are the drawbacks? In this essay, I will explore the pros and cons of living in a large city and try to draw some conclusions.

Let’s start looking at the advantages. One of the main positives of a big town is the large amount of shops available in every corner of the city. What I mean by this is that whenever you live, there are some useful stores supermarkets, banks, tobacconists and clothing stores where you can easily buy everything you need without going to the city center. Secondly, living in a big town is a big challenge for evening parties. In London, for example, there are so many things to do in the evenings going to the cinema, to the pub or to the park during the summer period.

Turning to the other side of the argument, traffic could be one of the major disadvantages of living in a big city. Many people take the car everyday and it has also been proved that the majority of the families have at least two cars. This means that you have to deal with rush-hour traffic on your way to work and on your way back. In addition, in a big town there is consequently a lot of smog and this can really affect people’s health.

To sum up, living in a big city has great advantages but also some significant negatives. You have to weigh up to the pros of enjoying evenings’ nights outside and the availability of many shops and the cons of cope with smog and traffic issues. Personally, I believe that the benefits of enjoying the city-life and the comfort of having shops at every corner, eventually overweigh the negatives.

I was born and raised in the heart of Hanoi city. I love Hanoi and my life right now. My family lives in an apartment in Dong Da district. The cost to live here is quite high. My parents have to work a lot to make sure I live the most comfortable. Everyone here is very sociable and friendly. Because it is the city center, it is always crowded and bustling here. You can buy anything you want. There are many shops selling different items to choose from. You can go anywhere with the bus. When you live in the city, you will be very familiar with the malls. This is a place for shopping and also a place for entertainment. My parents will take me to the mall once a week to buy essential items for my family and myself. I joined a badminton club in the apartment complex to exercise after stressful school hours. One feature of the city that I like very much is that its roads are very flat and easy to navigate. Night food in Hanoi is a culmination. You can easily find a great place to eat here. Life in the city has many wonderful things. That is the reason so many people have always wanted to be able to live here. I always try to deserve the wonderful life my parents give me.

Starting last year I started college. So I need to move to the city where I go to. For a student like me, living in the city is not easy. All costs in the city are more expensive than in the countryside. Therefore, besides studying, I have to work part-time to have living expenses. The city was always crowded and noisy. If you go out into the street at 10 pm you will still see a lot of people and cars on the road. One thing that I find very inconvenient is traffic congestion. In cities, especially in central areas, during peak hours, it is extremely congested. DO has a lot of transportation so the atmosphere in the city is full of dust and smoke. Since I live alone, I have very few friends here. That is why I often miss home. When I have free time I often call my mother to tell her about my experiences. Although life in the city is difficult, it also gives me many benefits. I feel more mature.

It's no doubt that living in the urban areas brings both benefits and drawbacks.

Living in the city has lots of advantages. First of all, modern facilities in the city help you access to the best infrastructure in your country. For example, the roads are better, there more kind entertainments, better educations, modern skyscrapers and hospitals,.. As a results, you can enjoy the best social services as well as never get bored with the life in the city. There are many recreation parks, clubs and outdoor activities to join, or shopping centres to shop, movie theaters, music concerts… Besides, when you pursue your career, remember that the head quarters of big corporations are always located in big cities, never in the countryside. So if you want to have a successful career or well paid job, stay in the city and find a suitable job as well as expand your knowledge to have chance of promotion.

Besides advantages, living in a city still has some disadvantages. Pollution is the most serious issue in the city. There are many kinds of pollution in the city such as air pollution, noise pollution, light pollution, water pollution, etc. Furthermore, such a large number of vehicles make the road crowded and so the traffic jams occur usually during rushing hour. Additionally, the rate of accidents happening and the rate of crime make people worried when living in the city. Many young people living are easily spoiled by bad habits in including social vices. Because many people want to rush the city to find jobs, they put the pressure on food, water and shelters to live. City officials often meet difficult dealing with building houses for immigrants.

In conclusion, although living in the city has many drawbacks, I believe that many people want to live there because there are many opportunities there in stead of staying in countryside with a low paid job.

EF_Team2 1 / 1,708   Nov 17, 2007   #3 Greetings! You make some very good points in your essay! I have just a few editing suggestions for you: Big cities are where you can see many vehicles, many skyscrapers, and many people with a hurried pace of life. Indeed, in a big city, people can have the best opportunities for work, as well as enjoying the best service and entertainment. In a big city, people have the best chance to study and work. There are many good universities to choose from in a big city. Moreover, when you graduate, you also find it easier to find opportunities to get a good job with a good salary. That is quite difficult in small cities or countrysides, where there are not as many many big companies and groups. Hence, many graduate students choose big cities to live and work. In short, it is where you can take advantage of a city's benefits for yourself. There are many rich people in cities, because they are a good place to invest money. Lives in a big city can be quite luxurious and you do not have to be worried when you are sick or suffer a disease because you can find good doctors there, as long as you have a lot of money. What's more, in a big city you can enjoy new entertainment such as new games or luxury games. - This is a little vague; what kinds of games? What do you mean by "luxury games"? Many people can argue that living in a big city makes them tired with noise and dashing about. However, when you get older, especially when you retire, the countryside is the best choice of places to live. However, you have to try your best to overcome all difficulties such as hard competition in the workplace or a polluted environment. You should not complain when faced with the disadvantages of it. - Your conclusion is not the best place to introduce new ideas like competitive workplaces, pollution, or disadvantages. If you want to mention these things, talk about them in the body of the essay; otherwise, do not bring them in, for the first time, in the conclusion. Use the conclusion to summarize only what you have already said. I hope this helps! Thanks, Sarah, EssayForum.com

essay on advantages of living in a city

The policy, if upheld in court, would be the largest government program for undocumented immigrants since the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals  initiative, which currently shields 528,000 so-called "Dreamers" who were brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.

Mr. Biden announced the measure at a White House event on Tuesday marking the 12th anniversary of DACA, alongside another move to make it easier for employers to sponsor "Dreamers" and other undocumented immigrants for work visas.

It's the second time in one month that Mr. Biden has taken a sweeping — and legally risky — executive action on immigration. Earlier in June, he invoked a presidential power used frequently by former President Donald Trump to disqualify most migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border from asylum .

How Biden's immigration plan would work

President Biden speaks in the East Room of the White House in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

The Biden administration program for undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens will provide two key immigration benefits.

It will allow eligible applicants to work and live in the U.S. legally on a temporary basis under the immigration parole authority. The policy, known as "Parole in Place," will also help these immigrants clear roadblocks in U.S. law that prevent them from getting permanent legal status without having to leave the country.

An immigrant who marries a U.S. citizen is generally eligible for a green card. But current federal law requires immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally to leave the country and re-enter legally to be eligible for a green card. Leaving the U.S. after living illegally in the country for certain periods of time can trigger a 10-year ban, leading many mixed-status families to not pursue this process.

The Biden administration's policy would allow eligible immigrants to obtain a green card without having to leave the U.S. After 3 to 5 years of living in the U.S. as a green card holder, immigrants can apply for American citizenship.

Administration officials estimate that roughly 500,000 unauthorized immigrants with U.S. citizen spouses will qualify for the program. Applicants must have been legally married to their American citizen spouse by June 17. Those who are deemed to pose a threat to national security or public safety will not qualify.

The policy is also expected to benefit an estimated 50,000 immigrant children with a parent who is married to a U.S. citizen, officials said. Undocumented stepchildren of U.S. citizens — who must also leave the country to obtain green cards — will be eligible to apply for the parole process if they are under the age of 21.

A senior administration official said the government is planning to open the Parole in Place program to applications "by the end of summer." The policy will almost certainly generate legal challenges, possibly from Republican-led states, which have sued the Biden administration over its immigration policies several times.

For over a decade, the U.S. government has overseen a more limited Parole in Place policy for unauthorized immigrants who are the immediate relatives of U.S. service members or veterans. In 2020, Congress affirmed that policy.

The State Department is also announcing on Tuesday a streamlined process for DACA recipients and other undocumented immigrants who have graduated from U.S. colleges to more easily obtain employment-based visas, such as H-1B visas for high-skilled workers.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Keep Families   Together

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. As Congressional Republicans have continued to put partisan politics ahead of national security – twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades – the President and his Administration have taken actions to secure the border, including:

  • Implementing executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum when encounters are high;
  • Deploying record numbers of law enforcement personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the Southern border;
  • Seizing record amounts of fentanyl at our ports of entry;
  • Revoking the visas of CEOs and government officials outside the U.S. who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully; and
  • Expanding efforts to dismantle human smuggling networks and prosecuting individuals who violate immigration laws.

President Biden believes that securing the border is essential. He also believes in expanding lawful pathways and keeping families together, and that immigrants who have been in the United States for decades, paying taxes and contributing to their communities, are part of the social fabric of our country. The Day One immigration reform plan that the President sent to Congress reflects both the need for a secure border and protections for the long-term undocumented. While Congress has failed to act on these reforms, the Biden-Harris Administration has worked to strengthen our lawful immigration system. In addition to vigorously defending the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood arrivals) policy, the Administration has extended Affordable Care Act coverage to DACA recipients and streamlined, expanded, and instituted new reunification programs so that families can stay together while they complete the immigration process.  Still, there is more that we can do to bring peace of mind and stability to Americans living in mixed-status families as well as young people educated in this country, including Dreamers. That is why today, President Biden announced new actions for people who have been here many years to keep American families together and allow more young people to contribute to our economy.   Keeping American Families Together

  • Today, President Biden is announcing that the Department of Homeland Security will take action to ensure that U.S. citizens with noncitizen spouses and children can keep their families together.
  • This new process will help certain noncitizen spouses and children apply for lawful permanent residence – status that they are already eligible for – without leaving the country.
  • These actions will promote family unity and strengthen our economy, providing a significant benefit to the country and helping U.S. citizens and their noncitizen family members stay together.
  • In order to be eligible, noncitizens must – as of June 17, 2024 – have resided in the United States for 10 or more years and be legally married to a U.S. citizen, while satisfying all applicable legal requirements. On average, those who are eligible for this process have resided in the U.S. for 23 years.
  • Those who are approved after DHS’s case-by-case assessment of their application will be afforded a three-year period to apply for permanent residency. They will be allowed to remain with their families in the United States and be eligible for work authorization for up to three years. This will apply to all married couples who are eligible.
  • This action will protect approximately half a million spouses of U.S. citizens, and approximately 50,000 noncitizen children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to a U.S. citizen.

Easing the Visa Process for U.S. College Graduates, Including Dreamers

  • President Obama and then-Vice President Biden established the DACA policy to allow young people who were brought here as children to come out of the shadows and contribute to our country in significant ways. Twelve years later, DACA recipients who started as high school and college students are now building successful careers and establishing families of their own.
  • Today’s announcement will allow individuals, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers, who have earned a degree at an accredited U.S. institution of higher education in the United States, and who have received an offer of employment from a U.S. employer in a field related to their degree, to more quickly receive work visas.
  • Recognizing that it is in our national interest to ensure that individuals who are educated in the U.S. are able to use their skills and education to benefit our country, the Administration is taking action to facilitate the employment visa process for those who have graduated from college and have a high-skilled job offer, including DACA recipients and other Dreamers.

How Biden’s New Immigration Policy Works

The new policy will give some 500,000 people a pathway to citizenship.

President Biden’s new immigration policy protects some 500,000 people who are married to U.S. citizens from deportation and gives them a pathway to citizenship.

The election-year move comes just two weeks after Mr. Biden imposed a major crackdown at the U.S.-Mexico border, cutting off access to asylum for people who crossed into the United States illegally.

The policy announced on Tuesday is aimed at people who have been living in the United States for more than a decade and have built their lives and families here.

Here is how it works:

Why do the spouses of American citizens need protection?

Marrying an American citizen generally provides a pathway to U.S. citizenship. But people who crossed the southern border illegally — rather than arriving in the country with a visa — must return to their home countries to complete the process for a green card, something that can take years. The new program allows families to remain in the country while they pursue legal status.

Who is eligible?

There are roughly 1.1 million undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens in the United States, according to Fwd.us , an immigration advocacy group, but not all of them are eligible for the program.

The spouses must have lived in the United States for 10 years and have been married to an American citizen as of June 17. They cannot have a criminal record. Officials estimate that the policy will provide legal status and protections for about 500,000 people. The benefits would also extend to the roughly 50,000 children of undocumented spouses who became stepchildren to American citizens.

When will the program take effect?

Biden administration officials said they expected the program to start by the end of the summer. Those eligible will then be able to apply for the benefits.

Why is President Biden doing this now?

Mr. Biden is trying to strike a tricky balance on immigration, which is a serious political vulnerability for him. Polls show Americans want tougher policies. Just two weeks ago, Mr. Biden announced a crackdown on asylum at the southern border.

His new policy, giving hundreds of thousands of immigrants new legal protections, is a way for him to answer the calls from the progressive base of the Democratic Party, which has accused the White House of betraying campaign promises to enact a more humane approach to immigrants.
