Essay of the Week: Brain drain in the developing world

Our band nine sample essays give you the opportunity to learn from successful essays that show off the best structure, vocabulary and grammar. This problem and solution type essay is about the complex issue of 'brain drain' in the developing world.

An increasing number of professionals like teachers and doctors are leaving poorer countries where they grew up to work in richer countries. What are some problems this causes and what are some solutions?

In recent years, developed countries have seen an influx of educators and healthcare practitioners from the developing world. In this essay, I will look at two issues this causes and present some solutions. First, that these countries do not recoup their investments in these people’s education, and second, that this leads to an unfair distribution of important workers.

First, professionals leaving the country after graduation is unfair to the countries who train them. When countries train public workers, they are making an investment in their education that they expect to recoup by having well trained staff in important jobs. If these professionals then leave the country for a high salary in the developed world, this means the country fails to get anything back for it’s investment. This is especially problematic for developing countries who have less public money available for education.

Second, this causes a shortage of professionals in those countries. Because these professionals have in-demand skills, it is easy for them to find jobs and visas abroad. This can cause staff shortages as poorer countries can lose staff to countries with more money causing a damaging shortage. For example, a country might lose teachers and then struggle to develop because of a lack of education provision.

To conclude, losing skilled professionals is both unfair and damaging to countries. However, there are several solutions to this problem. Developed countries should focus more on training their own workers rather than relying on the developing world. In addition, poorer countries should make training conditional on trainees working in that country for a period of time.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Brain Drain

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

An increasing number of professionals, such as doctors and teachers are leaving their poor countries to work in developed countries.

What problems does this cause? What solutions can you suggest to deal with this problem?

Write at least 250 words.

The world has become globalized and in this new era, where boundaries have become blurred it is often seen that people in search of better opportunities are shifting their base to developed countries. This shift, especially of professionals such as teachers and doctors is having an adverse effect on the economies of poor countries.

The biggest problem because of the brain drain is that there is a shortage of skilled workers in a country, often effecting the industries and other sectors. For instance, if the most effective doctors of a country leave the country for better opportunities in abroad, it is obvious that the country is more likely to face shortage of good doctors and its public health services will falling behind. One way of solving the problem is by giving the highly skilled workers more salary or incentives to make them feel different from others. This will also develop an environment where the more talented will feel they are respected in the country.

Another issue rising because of brain drain is that it increases dependence on foreign technical assistance. Since the talented individuals are turning towards developed countries, often the country lags behind in technical areas and has to spend money asking for assistance from the developed countries. One solution of it could be that the country should limit the number of years a person can work in a foreign country. This will help the people to earn money and the country will still have hope of getting back the worker.

Overall, the immigration of highly talented people from a poor country is a setback for the country. However, if proper steps are taken it can surely be avoided.

Brain Drain Listening Practice

This listening lesson has two different types of questions: list selection and sentence completion. This will also test your ability to know when to move from one question to the next. Make sure you use this lesson to also learn useful vocabulary because the brain drain is a common topic in writing task 2.

Questions 1-3

Which three reasons are given for the brain drain? Choose the correct letters A-G.

  • B) promotion opportunities
  • C) working with other professionals
  • D) quality of life
  • E) state-of-the-art equipment
  • F) political advancement
  • G) unemployment

What problem does the brain drain cause developing countries? Choose one letter.

  • A) resentment
  • B) loss of facilities
  • C) conflict between remaining professionals
  • D) loss of reputation
  • E) loss of money
  • F) loss of materials

Complete the sentence using no more than one word and/or a number.

In 2000, …….. million people, who were living outside their country of origin for more than one year, were employed.

  • E (answers to questions 1-3 can be given in any order)
  • 65    Transcript Brain drain is the migration of skilled human resources for trade, education, health care and other sectors.   Trained health professionals are needed in every part of the world. However, better standards of living draw many of them to more developed countries. Others decide to make the move because of better remuneration or for access to advanced modern technology.  For some the stable political conditions in the developed countries attract talent from less developed areas. The majority of migration is from developing to developed countries. This is of growing concern worldwide because of its impact on the health care systems in developing countries. These countries have invested in the education and training of young health professionals. This translates into a loss of considerable resources when these people migrate, with the benefit accruing to the recipient states who have not forked out to educate them. The intellectuals of any country are some of the most expensive resources because of their training in terms of material cost and time, and most importantly, because of lost opportunity. In 2000 almost 175 million people, or 2.9% of the world’s population, were living outside their country of birth for more than a year. Of these, about 65 million were economically active.   This form of migration has in the past involved many health professionals: nurses and physicians have sought employment abroad for many reasons including high unemployment in their home country. Paraphrasing at it’s finest. I did not get any correct answer but I learned a lot from this. Thanks Liz!

' src=

That’s the most important thing – to learn and develop 🙂

' src=

Ma number 1 question has up to 4 answers which includes E “technological advancement/state of the art equipment” as stated in the manuscript..what do you think Ma

Question number 1 doesn’t have four answers. Nor does question 1 have three answers. Questions 1 to 3 (which means three questions), have three answers (one answer each). Those three answers include option E as part of the answers. Have you misunderstood?

' src=

Tricky excercise 3/5 thanks for explaining the answer to questions 5

' src=

Hello Ma’am Thank You for an amazing site. This was to inform you that unlike other Audios, there’s an issue in playing the ‘Brain Drain Listening Practice’ Audio. If you can kindly help? Regards Shivam India

Review carefully very link on this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-reading-lessons-information-and-tips/ . You will soon pick up technique which must include awareness – you need to open your eyes to the difference between matching words and matching meaning. You will learn what to aim for and what to avoid. Awareness comes through extensive practice, where you review and think about what you got particular answers wrong, and not from just a two minute tip.

' src=

Hi Liz , Thanks for the nice work. I will like to know why the answer to question 5 is not 175 million ? regards,Prosper

You are getting confused with the clause in the sentence. In 2000, …….. million people, [who were living outside their country of origin for more than one year], were employed. = In 2000, ….. million people were employed. This is really testing your grammar!! 🙂

' src=

It was tricky. I got just one answer correct.

' src=

Yeah, I first thought brain drain was a disease then the first sentence explained it. LOL.

' src=

Thanks Liz i was able to get 2 over 5 at my first listening !

' src=

Thank you Liz, this listening test was really challenging. Your lessons helped me a lot to improve my English skills.

' src=

Hello Liz! Do you think it is appropriate to use “brain drain” in Writing 2, if the topic is connected with it, isn’t it informal?

It is certainly not informal – it is not slang. It is completely fine to use in any IELTS writing task 2 essay. It is a common term which is used whenever talking about this issue.

' src=

Please madam can I use my textbooks and notes while wrinting the ielts exam?

IELTS is a language test with international standards. You can take pen, pencil and eraser into the test room.

' src=

Thank you, Liz. Very challenging

' src=

Dear Liz! First of all, thanks very much for your altruistic help, it’s being very useful for a lot of us. With regards to this exercise, I’d like to know why the response “political advancement” is not chosen. There is a sentence which mentions the stable political conditions, and I think is related to the question asked. Could you let me know why is this one incorrect? Thanks in advance! Best regards and have a nice weekend. Juan

You need to think more carefully about the meaning of “political advancement”. This is about a person who works in politics trying to advance their career. It is not about political stability or political conditions. They are two completely different things. IELTS listening is really testing both your listening skills and your deeper understanding of vocabulary and English in general.

' src=

Thank you Liz for your great support for us. You are such a nice person I ever meet. your website is damn good,I love it.

' src=

I got only 2. Do I need to repeat this to get or go to next exercise? Hoping for your reply.

It’s your choice. You can use this lesson to develop listening skills or note taking skills or vocabulary – you are an independent learner and it is your responsibility to get as much as possible from each lesson.

' src=

Hi Liz! It was the toughest.. but to make myself competent I will be needing more of such listening exercises. I was only able to answer the D for Q1 at the first attempt. Can you please upload more material like this one??

Did you check my main listening page for all my free lessons and tips? All main pages are accessed through the RED BAR at the top of the website. There are 30 such exercises. Here is the link to that page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-listening/

' src=

I found A and D options for the first question but i am not able to find E. please tell me where it is ?

E is the only option that is mentioned in question 4: “The intellectuals of any country are some of the most expensive resources because of their training in terms of material cost and time, and most importantly, because of lost opportunity.”

' src=

thanks so much brilliant Liza

' src=

she is a brilliant teacher indeed

' src=

And Can u plzzzzz tel me why u wrote the answers like 1) A 2) D 3) E Shouldn’t it be written like that A, D, E

The three letters are not for one question. The three letters are for three questions (questions 1, 2 and 3). This means one letter per question = one letter in one answer box on the answer sheet. Always pay attention to this or you will get all following answers marked wrong because they are on the wrong box.

Got it……Thanks😊

' src=

hi liz, your lessons are really helpful. here i have doubt with the exact meaning of state-of-the-art equipment. could you please explain it for me.

thank you so much…

regards Raman

See this page: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/state-of-the-art

' src=

hey liz , i have a query regarding question 4, there is no instruction for question 4 whether we will have to choose a letter or write a full answer like for question 1-3 there is clear instruction to choose a letter but there is no such instruction for question 4, kindly help in this regard thanks and regards Mehwish

Well spotted!! 🙂 That won’t happen in your IELTS test. The instructions are always written very clearly.

' src=

Wonderful job done! very helpful lessons. Stay blessed and Thank you

' src=

Hello Liz, Thank you so much for your kind works. Each of your lessons is very helpful for me. I’m having a problem with only one questions of this lesson.Could you please tell me why the answer “E” is right for question 3 ? Thanks 🙂

loss of money: “these people migrate, with the benefit accruing to the recipient states who have not forked out to educate them” This means that the country pays for their education but then loses the people who migrate. Also “In 2000 almost 175 million people, or 2.9% of the world’s population, were living outside their country of birth for more than a year. Of these, about 65 million were economically active. “. This shows that people living outside their country are economically active. Don’t look for just synonyms – look for meaning.

' src=

This was my query too…I didn’t know that we have to look for meaning too…thank u liz

' src=

thank you so much!

' src=

For Question 4 I feel even loss of materials, that is F is correct(in fact it can be taken directly from the passage read) while E has to be inferred ( I guess from the line that says something like “A lot has been invested …”.). Why is the answer E and not F?

Thank you for your time. Regards Sushma

The answer is found: The intellectuals of any country are some of the most expensive resources because of their training in terms of material cost and time, and most importantly, because of lost opportunity. In 2000 almost 175 million people, or 2.9% of the world’s population, were living outside their country of birth for more than a year. Of these, about 65 million were economically active. It does not mention anything about materials losses – they didn’t lose equipment or anything material. They only refer to material costs.

' src=

Dear Liz, I love your lessons, especially the listening or reading parts which you professionally connect to the writing tasks. It’s awesome. I am learning many things. Thank you so much! Warmly, Neda

You’re welcome 🙂

' src=

HI LIZ, NICE TUTORIALS BUT CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN HOW DOES THE ANSWER OF FIRST QUESTION ” BRAIN DRAIN” HAS OPTION “E” IN ANSWER AND NOT OPTION “F”. I GOT OTHER ANSWERS CORRECT.

REGARDS ANKIT PAREKH

“political advancement” means someone who wants to advance their own political career, such as a politician.

' src=

Hi Liz U r amazingly great!! Ur method of explaing makes u different from others. I always look for ur lesson firstly in case of need. God bless Thank n regards Geetika

' src=

Dear Liz, Your website if really tremendous. One clarification for me- answer of Q5 was the number of people who were unemployed. From the recording, we found that 65 million was economically active (Opposite of unemployed). So, I thought the answer would be 175-65=110 million. Could you please clarify?

Question 5 says “employed”. Always read the question carefully.

' src=

Hi Liz Amazing practise sessions. I have benefitted greatly. Thank you so much. God bless.

Warm regards Sheetal

' src=

Hi liz I would like to know which is the best way to score 8 in all band. What would be your advice? Regards Camila

1. Develop band scores for each type of question in listening, reading, speaking and writing. This means going through each type very carefully. 2. Develop paraphrasing skills for listening and reading. This means making a list of all paraphrases used in all exercises you do. 3. Understand vocabulary more deeply. This means learn more about collocations and when words can or can’t be used. 4. Learn about the requirements for band scores 5 to 8 in writing and speaking. You need to learn why band scores go down and why they go up. Learn what the examiner is looking for: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-writing-task-1-band-scores/ 5. The key to band 8 in speaking and writing is not only an excellent range of grammar and vocabulary but also a lack of errors. The majority of your sentences need to be error free. This will start you on the right track. Liz

' src=

Hello Mrs Liz, Thank you so much for everything you do to help us improve our English level. I noticed that some people were confused about some answers but the one that caused me trouble is G. I wonder if this sentence ” Nurses and physicians have sought employment abroad for many reasons including high unemplyment in their home country” doesn’t mean that unemployment is one of the reasons for the brain drain? Many thanks

' src=

Thanks a lot for nice tips and for your lessons. You do a great job for us who wants to improve the IELTS scores. Honestly, this lesson was a little bit difficult for me but could manage it. Just one request is it possible to underline the key words, phrases, sentences in the transcript. I think it helps to understand the right answers for those who cannot get it. Or just a brief explanation for each answer.

Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Zamira

' src=

Hey Liz I have found this website very helpful!! Liz , loss of concentration has become my difficulty while I listen…what will be your advise on “concentration ”

Stay Blessed !!!

The only option is practice and more practice until you are accustomed to concentrating for longer periods of time. Remember that the tst is 2 hour 40 mins without a break. So make sure you do a full test and develop your concentration before your test. All the best Liz

' src=

Hello Miss.Liz ,

thank u so much 4 useful lessons , but I have a note : u said before that we should not understand every thing just looking for the answers , I agree with u , but I think in this station 2 & 4 , I think we will not answer well if we don’t understand all the passage , because there is just a keys answers , Am I aright ?

thank u again Salam

https://ieltsliz.com/liz-notice-2015-2016/

' src=

Liz, could you please explain why answer to 5th question is ’65’ and not ‘about 65’. In the record and transcript it is read/said “about 65 million”.

In other materials on your site, in similar questions proper answer almost always includes additional word, usually “about”. In my opinion, when we talk about people it’s very unlikely that the number was exactly 65,000,000, so the “about” shall be used there.

What do you think?

' src=

in question 1 , why E is correct , i didn’t find it in transcript also , i why answer for Q4 is E , in the audio ” loss of considerable resources” that means the correct answer is B

Question 1 E: “for access to advanced modern technology”. This shows that state of the art equipment is a reason. In question 4, the word resources does not mean facilities. You can see what the countries lose: “The intellectuals of any country are some of the most expensive resources because of their training in terms of material cost and time”. All the best Liz

' src=

Sorry for bothering you again, but I have another question which I cannot find the satisfied answer on the internet. I, therefore, ask you for another favor. Could you explain why the phrase “… their country of birth…” is used instead of “…their countries of birth…”? Thanks, Phuoc

It’s the same as “their nationality” which refers to each individual nationality. All the best Liz

Would you please review the structure: “This is of growing concern…”? As I heard in the audio, the sentence is “This is a growing concern…”. I am not sure I heard it right but I think the second one is more reasonable. Could you clarify it, please? Thanks, Phuoc

They are both fine to use. All the best Liz

' src=

this is so much confusing, all the answers are different, I heard the audio two times and then read the transcript but still confuse with the options given. Because in audio, I didn’t hear any of the words which are in answer list.

Please explain this Teacher liz

Sorry but it means that you need to to find a teacher to help you. The answer key and transcript should be enough. The issue probably lies with your level of English which might be too limited for this level of listening. Liz

' src=

In one of my practice listing test, which Is NOT MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER,one question was date of birth and recording said 31st March 1972. So it it correct if write answer as 31-March-1972 all attached with ‘ -‘.

Thanks Virendra

If it states “and/or a number” you can’t have two numbers. If it states “and/or numbers” you can have both. Liz

My question is about the IELTS Listening

when i listened the answer from recording it was 4th of NOVEMBER I WROTE THE ANSWER as i listen,i.e 4th November

but when i checked my answer from the answer key it was 4 NOVEMBER

MY ANSWER IS WRONG OR WRITE?

It is still right. Liz

Hi Liz i hope u will b fine !

My Question is about the listening part while i attempting the Cambridge IELTS 3 WRITE NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS!

When i listened the recording then i wrote the answer as “house wives” but when i checked it from the answer key that was there as aggregated one word .i.e housewives

whether it would b wrong or right?

if wrong then what is the criteria to know about when tow difference words will use as one word in aggregation ?

Please google information about compound nouns with and without hyphens. Some compound nouns are written as one word and some as two words and some with a hyphen joining them. This is an English test and it is testing your understanding of this. You need to google this information and learn it. All the best Liz

' src=

Whoaaaaa haha

I could get 2 answers correct from 1-4 and that too because of my accounting/finance mind. 😀

Question 5 is easy if we listen attentively.

Thanks a lot Liz. Be Blessed !

' src=

Hello.. In question 1-3 , If i got two right of three, how much marks i will get? I mean it is required to have all answer right to get marks in this type of questions?

Each question is worth one point. So questions 1 to 3 – 3 points. If you only got 2 correct out of 3, you will get 2 points. All the best Liz

' src=

Hi Liz . It’s a little bit difficult for me as i could not guess any answer first time after hearing several times . After all you a excellent teachers . Many many thanks for helping us . I am so great full to you .

Yes, this one was difficult. Don’t worry if you didn’t hear it all. Liz

' src=

I’m disappointed, My exam is on 12th of September and I need 6.5 I’m a good speaker and I got band 7 in speaking section last exam, but 🙁 I don’t have time to study the rest I do not know wt to do For instance, why it is 65 not 175 in Q5 ? I can’t catch such questions 🙁

Q5 is 65 because “65 million were economically active” which is about being employed. Read the information in the sentence and underline key words before you listen. Liz

' src=

hii Liz, I did not understand why the answer E for the 3rd question. In between, thanks a lot for such a wonderful site to learn IELTS.

See this sentence: Others decide to make the move because of better remuneration or for access to advanced modern technology. All the best Liz

' src=

hi liz, why the ans of Q.4 is E not B (loss of oportunities )

Because there is no mention of facilities. Opportunities means chance, it does not mean equipment. But it does clearly show that there is a loss of money. All the best Liz

' src=

You’re an angel sent from heaven!

Essay on Brain Drain

Brain Drain is defined as the emigration or migration of individuals of talents and skills from developing or under-developed countries to developed ones. It means impoverishment of intellectuals, professionals, and technical resources of one country and enriching another. It is also known as the mass departure of skillful resources from a country. It brings a potential economic decline to the nation. Brain Drain subjects to a vital threat before a country. This migration results in a great loss to the countries where they are born and educated. Higher education is one of the important reasons for permanent emigration.

We, at Vedantu, have provided the students with an essay on brain drain with two perspectives in mind. The first one is the concept of making the students understand what is brain drain and next, to make them develop their essay writing skills which are useful in several ways including the need to write essays for improving their writing skills, for making good answers in the exams, to help the students prepare better result for themselves by going through this process.

The term ‘Brain Drain’ was first used by the United Kingdom in 1960 when the skilled workforce started emigrating from the developing or under-developed countries to the developed countries (first world countries). It refers to the situation when highly qualified and trained people leave his/her own country to permanently settle down in other developed countries.  It is also known as human capital flight. With the beginning of globalization, ideas, opinions, skills in the form of labor started being exchanged between the nations.

This concept of Brain Drain is a matter of serious concern for any nation because it takes off individuals from their homeland to another foreign land. Often people go abroad to pursue higher education and settle there because of better work and attractive pay packages. Talented, skilled, and experienced professionals migrate to other countries for better career prospects. They get attracted by better standards of living and quality of life, higher salaries, access to advanced technology, and more stable political conditions in the developed countries which lead to migration from less developed countries.

The factors for the rise of Brain Drain are also called Push and Pull factors. The Push factors are the factors connected to the country of origin and Pull factors are the factors connected with the country of destination.

Push Factors:

The basic facility is not congenial for research and education in the institutions.

Under-employment for thousands of engineering graduates, scientific and technical manpower waiting for respective assignments.

Political instability.

Poor quality of living.

Limited access to health care facilities.

Less economic opportunity.

Pull Factors:

Better Economic prospects.

Better Research facilities.

Employment Opportunities.

Relative Political Stability.

Modern Education System and a better chance of advancement.

There are Three Types of Brain Drain

Geographical Brain Drain: This refers to the emigration of highly skilled professionals to other developing countries in search of better-paying jobs. It creates a negative impact on the economic development of the homeland.

Organizational Brain Drain: This refers to the departure of experienced and talented individuals from one organization to another. This exodus can be very harmful to organizations.

Industrial Brain Drain: This refers to the movement of skilled and trained workers from one industry to another for a better salary. This causes a shortage of experienced workers in the industry from where they depart.

Overall, Brain Drain is a widespread phenomenon these days. Many developing and under-developed countries are suffering from the loss of talents and skilled professionals like India, Africa, and Arab countries. The governments and private firms should take some strict measures to control this by aiming towards a better and friendlier atmosphere. They should provide better working conditions, improve infrastructure in educational institutions, create more employment opportunities, increase salaries and develop rural places.  Making laws and strictly implementing them should check discrimination and bias at workplaces. Incentives should be given to youngsters from going abroad in search of work. These action plans can solve the problem of Brain Drain.

Band 6+: Some argue that brain drain may lead to dire consequences for home country while others think it has marginal effect on society. Discuss and give your opinion.

The debate over whether brain drain can pave the way for adverse implications or it has just trivial repercussion for home country has become the center of discussion. This essay will shed light on both points of views and reveal my personal perspective.

Advocates of this idea claim that brain drain can induce inevitable impairment to home country on several grounds. Initially, brain drain leads to a loss of talent and expertise in the home country ,influencing development and economic growth. This damage can turn out the recession and a reduction of individuals who are regarded highly erudite. Secondly, such departures can impede the development of the country, escalating adverse dichotomy between ignorant and well-informed residents. Unless countries capture their versed inhabitants who can assist the country with crucial breakthroughs within their land , thereby it can preclude to encounter the burgeoning economy.

In spite of numerous thoughts, I , like many others, believe that such marginal loss can not inhibit the home country to flourish. In the light of digital revolution, skilled individuals can contribute to their home country remotely through social platforms ,international collaborations, mitigating the implications of emigration. Brain drain ,which is considered a consequence of globalization, can pave the way for cross-cultural exchange and a transfer of talents, knowledge and capabilities between host and home countries. The inhabitants who leave the country can return to their home land with myriad invaluable skills resulting in thriving home country.

All in all, despite the fact that some argue that brain drain is a irreplaceable harm to home country , I believe that this emigration doesn’t annihilate considerably the home country.

Review carefully very link on this page: https://ieltsliz.com/ielts-reading-lessons-information-and-tips/ . You will soon pick up technique which must include awareness – you need to open your eyes to the difference between matching words and matching meaning. You will learn what to aim for and what to avoid. Awareness comes through extensive practice, where you review and think about what you got particular answers wrong, and not from just a two minute tip.

ielts essays on brain drain

Hi Liz , Thanks for the nice work. I will like to know why the answer to question 5 is not 175 million ? regards,Prosper

You are getting confused with the clause in the sentence. In 2000, …….. million people, [who were living outside their country of origin for more than one year], were employed. = In 2000, ….. million people were employed. This is really testing your grammar!! 🙂

ielts essays on brain drain

It was tricky. I got just one answer correct.

ielts essays on brain drain

Hello Liz! Do you think it is appropriate to use “brain drain” in Writing 2, if the topic is connected with it, isn’t it informal?

It is certainly not informal – it is not slang. It is completely fine to use in any IELTS writing task 2 essay. It is a common term which is used whenever talking about this issue.

ielts essays on brain drain

Please madam can I use my textbooks and notes while wrinting the ielts exam?

Thank you, Liz. Very challenging

ielts essays on brain drain

I found A and D options for the first question but i am not able to find E. please tell me where it is ?

E is the only option that is mentioned in question 4: “The intellectuals of any country are some of the most expensive resources because of their training in terms of material cost and time, and most importantly, because of lost opportunity.”

ielts essays on brain drain

And Can u plzzzzz tel me why u wrote the answers like 1) A 2) D 3) E Shouldn’t it be written like that A, D, E

The three letters are not for one question. The three letters are for three questions (questions 1, 2 and 3). This means one letter per question = one letter in one answer box on the answer sheet. Always pay attention to this or you will get all following answers marked wrong because they are on the wrong box.

Got it……Thanks😊

ielts essays on brain drain

Don’t look for just synonyms – look for meaning.

ielts essays on brain drain

This was my query too…I didn’t know that we have to look for meaning too…thank u liz

ielts essays on brain drain

thank you so much!

ielts essays on brain drain

They only refer to material costs.

ielts essays on brain drain

Dear Liz, Your website if really tremendous. One clarification for me- answer of Q5 was the number of people who were unemployed. From the recording, we found that 65 million was economically active (Opposite of unemployed). So, I thought the answer would be 175-65=110 million. Could you please clarify?

Question 5 says “employed”. Always read the question carefully.

ielts essays on brain drain

Liz

ielts essays on brain drain

Hello Mrs Liz, Thank you so much for everything you do to help us improve our English level. I noticed that some people were confused about some answers but the one that caused me trouble is G. I wonder if this sentence ” Nurses and physicians have sought employment abroad for many reasons including high unemplyment in their home country” doesn’t mean that unemployment is one of the reasons for the brain drain? Many thanks

ielts essays on brain drain

Thanks a lot for nice tips and for your lessons. You do a great job for us who wants to improve the IELTS scores. Honestly, this lesson was a little bit difficult for me but could manage it. Just one request is it possible to underline the key words, phrases, sentences in the transcript. I think it helps to understand the right answers for those who cannot get it. Or just a brief explanation for each answer.

Thanks in advance. Kind regards, Zamira

ielts essays on brain drain

Hey Liz I have found this website very helpful!! Liz , loss of concentration has become my difficulty while I listen…what will be your advise on “concentration ”

Stay Blessed !!!

The only option is practice and more practice until you are accustomed to concentrating for longer periods of time. Remember that the tst is 2 hour 40 mins without a break. So make sure you do a full test and develop your concentration before your test. All the best Liz

Hello Miss.Liz ,

thank u so much 4 useful lessons , but I have a note : u said before that we should not understand every thing just looking for the answers , I agree with u , but I think in this station 2 & 4 , I think we will not answer well if we don’t understand all the passage , because there is just a keys answers , Am I aright ?

thank u again Salam

ielts essays on brain drain

Liz, could you please explain why answer to 5th question is ’65’ and not ‘about 65’. In the record and transcript it is read/said “about 65 million”.

In other materials on your site, in similar questions proper answer almost always includes additional word, usually “about”. In my opinion, when we talk about people it’s very unlikely that the number was exactly 65,000,000, so the “about” shall be used there.

What do you think?

ielts essays on brain drain

in question 1 , why E is correct , i didn’t find it in transcript also , i why answer for Q4 is E , in the audio ” loss of considerable resources” that means the correct answer is B

Question 1 E: “for access to advanced modern technology”. This shows that state of the art equipment is a reason. In question 4, the word resources does not mean facilities. You can see what the countries lose: “The intellectuals of any country are some of the most expensive resources because of their training in terms of material cost and time”. All the best Liz

ielts essays on brain drain

All the best Liz

ielts essays on brain drain

this is so much confusing, all the answers are different, I heard the audio two times and then read the transcript but still confuse with the options given. Because in audio, I didn’t hear any of the words which are in answer list.

Please explain this Teacher liz

Sorry but it means that you need to to find a teacher to help you. The answer key and transcript should be enough. The issue probably lies with your level of English which might be too limited for this level of listening. Liz

ielts essays on brain drain

In one of my practice listing test, which Is NOT MORE THAN ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER,one question was date of birth and recording said 31st March 1972. So it it correct if write answer as 31-March-1972 all attached with ‘ -‘.

Thanks Virendra

If it states “and/or a number” you can’t have two numbers. If it states “and/or numbers” you can have both. Liz

ielts essays on brain drain

This post on mind maps or brainstorming is for candidates who find it difficult to arrange / find out ideas for IELTS Writing Task 2 and Speaking part 2 / cue card and part 3 questions. Hopefully, these 5 mind-maps on drug addiction, traffic accidents, global warming, brain drain & culture shock will help you gather ideas quickly to write essays or speak on a topic card or more complex questions for sometime.

IELTS Writing & Speaking: 5 mind maps / brainstorming ideas on traffic accidents, drug addiction, global warming, brain drain & culture shock; for task 2 essays, speaking part 2 & 3

It is quite common that IELTS candidates often find it difficult to put together some ideas on different topics and it becomes fairly difficult for them to write an IELTS Writing Task 2 essay or speak on a topic/cue/task card in IELTS Speaking part 2.

Keeping this in mind, here I’ve arranged 5 mind-maps or brainstorming ideas on 5 basic IELTS topics. You will find these topics in almost all the IELTS books, hand-notes, blogs etc. Let’s have a look.

1. Drug Addiction

Here is a mind map on drug addiction.

IELTS Writing & Speaking: 5 mind maps / brainstorming ideas on traffic accidents, drug addiction, global warming, brain drain & culture shock; for task 2 essays, speaking part 2 & 3

You can use this mind-map to generate your ideas for the following IELTS Writing Task 2 essays.

  • Clear evidence on the use of drugs prevails in modern societies. However, today’s teenagers and youths are doing both legal and illegal researches on drugs. Some social experts maintain that parents and other legal guardians of society can barely do anything to control them. Discuss the reasons and effects of this extensive drug abuse by young generation. Propose any suggestions that you believe are necessary to help combat drug abuse among youths.
  • Teenagers are progressively becoming drug addicts in nearly every country of the world. What are the outcomes of this social problem? Suggest some preventive measures to fight this hazard.
  • Some experts consider that the trouble of illegal drugs can be solved by just making all drugs legal. Others, however, feel that this issue can only be solved by educating everyone in the society about it. Discuss both the views and offer your own opinions on the matter.
  • Drug addiction in the society spreads only because of careless guardians. How far do you agree or disagree?

You can also use the mind-map to generate your ideas for the following IELTS Speaking part 2- cue cards.

Describe a time when you had to help someone in danger.

You should say:

  • When it happened
  • Who you helped
  • Why you helped him/her
  • And how you felt after helping him/her

Describe a social problem that is affecting your locality seriously.

  • What the problem is
  • How it is affecting your locality
  • What the present condition is
  • And how this problem can be solved

You can also use the mind-map to generate your ideas for the following IELTS Speaking part 3 questions.

  • Do you think addiction should be considered as a disease?
  • Why do you think youths are so interested in drugs?
  • Do you think the government can solve the problem?
  • How was the situation of drug abuse 20 years ago?
  • Why is this problem spreading so rapidly?

2. Traffic accidents

Here is a mind map on traffic accidents.

IELTS Writing & Speaking: 5 mind maps / brainstorming ideas on traffic accidents, drug addiction, global warming, brain drain & culture shock; for task 2 essays, speaking part 2 & 3

  • A big number of deaths are caused by road accidents every year. Why do so many accidents occur? Make recommendations which may help reduce the number of road accidents.
  • The best way to decrease the number of traffic accidents is to raise the age limit for younger drivers and to lower the age limit for aged drivers. Do you agree or disagree?
  • Some experts claim that the best way to reduce traffic accidents is individual awareness. Others are of the opinion that only tougher rules and regulations can only solve this problem. What is your opinion about this?
  • Lately there has been a rapid boost in the number of public deaths on the highways. Traffic designers blame drivers for driving aggressively while drivers articulate that the roads are terrible for traffic use. Who, in your opinion, is to be blamed for the mishaps that are responsible for tragic deaths caused on roads?

Describe a tragic road accident you saw.

  • Where the accident occurred
  • Where you were at that time
  • How the accident affected you

  • The main reason behind the rapid migration of professionals in developed nations is job and financial insecurity. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
  • Some experts claim that brain drain can only be solved if government comes forward to support the professionals. Others say that individual love and responsibility for native country is important to stop this trend. What is your opinion about it?

  • Settling into new customs and cultures can be extremely difficult. Although some ‘culture shock’ is unavoidable, there are numerous ways to make living abroad much easier. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
  • Going overseas for university study is an exciting experience for many students. However, it may offer some advantages but it is almost certainly better to stay home because of the complexities a student inescapably faces living and studying in a different society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?  Offer your personal opinion.
  • It is often believed by many people that the best way to understand a culture is by learning the language used in that particular culture. Do you agree or disagree?

Describe a foreign culture that you like.

  • What culture it is and how you know about it
  • What differences there are between that culture and your own
  • Why you like that foreign culture
  • And explain if you faced any problem understanding that culture
  • Why do you think being away from home is worrying for a lot of people?
  • What are the downsides of moving to another country for work or study?
  • Why do some people feel it stressful when they face a new culture?
  • How can a person adapt to a culture quickly?
  • When and how does culture shock occur?
  • Do you think age plays any role in affecting people of different ages?

Word Highlight: Brain Drain - What Do You Mean By Brain Drain? IELTSESSAYWRITING TIPS http://www.jroozreview.com/ielts-essay-writing-tips/ www.jroozreview.com

IELTS ESSAY WRITING • We all have heard this word a lot of times and even used it in conversation and even in writing; however, are we using this word properly? What does “brain drain” mean? • However, the word Brain Drainis a term for the large scale emigration of educated, talented professionals from their home country. The emigration of these individuals may result from a present crisis in a nation or professionals seeking better career opportunities and a better standard of living. • The subject of brain drain has been one of the most asked questions in the IELTS writing section. Here’s a sample essay discussing brain drain. www.jroozreview.com

IELTS Essay– Brain Drain Working for one’s own country has been considered patriotic as one serves his or her own countrymen. However, there are some that are not satisfied with what they have here making them leave the country and practice abroad. With this, a country will be experiencing brain drain. Nowadays, finding a job in the country, the Philippines, has been fairly difficult. There are growing numbers of professionals but the demands for these professionals are not enough in the Philippines. Certain professions that are highly in demand in other countries are scientists, engineers, accountants, medical professionals like nurses, doctors, physical therapists, and skilled workers like butchers. Though our country needs these professionals, the amount of job offers are very limited that these talents are put into waste. Hence, they choose to practice their expertise abroad. www.jroozreview.com

If these professionals work abroad, how can these affect the country? With every loss of professionals in the country, the supply of such profession decreases. When the time comes where their own country needs these profession, the problem then arises as most competitive professionals are already out of the country working. However, the country can gain advantage from these professionals working abroad. They help the economy in their own little way and at the same time providing recognition to Filipinos as one of the countries with the most hard working individuals and highly competitive with the strict demand overseas. In a nut shell, in any aspect, the issue of brain drain has both advantage and disadvantage. It can be of help as it helps the country’s economy but can be a downside as the county loses its own professionals. www.jroozreview.com

For Filipinos, working abroad has been a part of their plan as soon as they finish their degrees in the university. People have different reasons why they would prefer working abroad than here in our country. However, it is more on practicality. Because of everybody wants to provide their own families with a better standard of living where they can live a happier life, Filipinos make huge decisions on working abroad. Since working abroad offers a very competitive salary and better career development, Filipinos choose this career path. Once presented with a good opportunity abroad, Filipinos are sure to work hard on it to become success and attain satisfaction both personally and professionally. www.jroozreview.com

IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:

  • Supporting idea: Due to lack of skilled professionals such as doctors and teachers, the citizens of these countries may struggle to get basic facilities such as medical services and education.
  • Many remote areas in Vietnam have a limited number of medical professionals, making it challenging for residents to access basic healthcare services. As a result, people living in these regions may have to travel long distances to receive medical attention or may not receive proper medical care at all, which can lead to adverse health outcomes.   >> IELTS  TUTOR  hướng  dẫn   Cách paraphrase từ"area"(Diễn đạt"khu vực" tiếng anh)
  • Similarly, the shortage of qualified teachers in some areas may make it difficult for students to receive quality education, leading to a lack of opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Supporting idea: Poor economic conditions will exacerbate poverty, lead to unemployment and ultimately disintegrate the nation.
  • Example: Many Vietnamese engineers and technical professionals migrate to other countries in search of better job opportunities and higher salaries. As a result, Vietnam is left with a shortage of skilled professionals in the field, which leads to a reliance on foreign technical aid.
  • Supporting idea:  People who perform well in their respective fields of study should be honoured with awards and incentives  >> IELTS  TUTOR  hướng  dẫn   Cách dùng "meanwhile" tiếng anh
  • Example: "Vietnam Talent" program was launched by the Vietnamese government to attract Vietnamese scientists and researchers who are currently working abroad to come back to their home country. The program offers various incentives, including higher salaries, better working conditions, and research grants, to entice these skilled professionals to return to Vietnam and contribute to the country's development.
  • Scholarships can help to promote access to education and provide opportunities for talented individuals who may not have the financial means to pursue higher education.
  • By increasing facilities for research-oriented activities, the government can promote the growth of research and innovation ecosystems in the country, which can attract investments, create new industries, and stimulate economic growth.  >> IELTS  TUTOR  hướng  dẫn   Cách dùng động từ "promote"
  • Nowadays, schools in Vietnam are adopting latest technology similar to other developed countries
  • "Vietnam National University, Hanoi" (VNU) Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to deserving students and researchers pursuing higher education at the VNU. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation expenses, and research grants, among other things.  >> IELTS  TUTOR  hướng  dẫn   Cách dùng danh từ "accommodation" tiếng anh
  • IELTS TUTOR lưu ý là 2 solutions sẽ tương ứng với 2 causes nhé!

3 Body Problem

‘3 Body Problem’ Episode 7 Recap: Brain Drain

Wanted: One intelligent human brain, body not required.

  • Share full article

A man in a striped shirt is wearing a hoodie and black jacket

By Sean T. Collins

Season 1, Episode 7: ‘Only Advance’

Wanted: One intelligent human brain. Dying donors preferred. Serious consideration of whether or not aliens should just go ahead and take over a plus. Must survive 300 nuclear explosions in outer space. Estimated travel time: 200 years. Return transportation not provided. Full human bodies not allowed.

This is the tempting offer at the center of the penultimate episode of the first season of “3 Body Problem.” Reuniting the “Game of Thrones” team of the director Jeremy Podeswa and the writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, it is another low-key affair compared to the mounting menace and chaos of the first five episodes. Granted, it is about a scheme to remove Will’s brain, freeze it, and blast it into space at unprecedented speeds so it can be intercepted and studied by the San-Ti. Will’s doubts about the project, says boss Thomas Wade, are what make him so valuable: If he were a true believer in the fight to the death against the aliens, they might simply let him drift past.

Some people’s doubts are stronger than others’. Though she designs the nanofiber sail required to accelerate the probe through space, she walks away from it all when the idea of sacrificing Will as a glorified space monkey is brought to the table. She also takes her nanofibers off the market and out of the realm of exclusivity permanently, by uploading all the data she has on them to the internet and making them accessible to everyone for free.

The problem is that compared to a Cyclopean eye in the sky or a boat getting sliced to pieces by an invisible web out of Stephen King’s “The Mist,” none of this is all that interesting. From the very first episode, it was apparent that ideas and images, not compelling characters and a novel plot, were the strength of “3 Body Problem.” Leaning into the characters makes the whole thing lopsided.

Look at Wade, for example. At first just a gray eminence working behind the scenes while Clarence pounded the pavement, he gradually grew in prominence, reaching a fun spy-movie throwback sweet spot last episode. Now, however, it feels like Benioff and Weiss have overshot the mark with him into cliché.

There’s only so much even an actor like Liam Cunningham can do with dialogue like “The Doomsday Express just pulled into the station — you can all queue up behind me” or “The future’s not as far as it used to be.” The man is talking about having himself cryogenically frozen like a C.G.I. chimpanzee and revived annually so he can personally oversee humanity’s defenses for 400 years. He’s a bit too “a Jerry Bruckheimer production” to fit in with the show’s more psychologically realistic characters, i.e. all the rest of them.

Among those characters, though, Will is a poor choice to be the season’s emotional linchpin. Will had mere minutes of screen-time before he received his diagnosis, during which he was overshadowed by his friends’ more impressive accomplishments and vivacious personalities. For all intents and purposes, he’s only ever been “nebbishy guy who’s very ill” to us.

This works fine in one sense: I’ve greatly enjoyed the subplot in which he and Saul just lounge around a beach house getting stoned while the world falls down around them. Obviously Will has more of an external rationale for taking this approach than Saul does, but in both cases their lackadaisical attitude makes for a bracing contrast with the can-do spirit of their pals Jin and Auggie, along with Raj. Those three characters seem to recognize on some level that they’re protagonists in a sci-fi epic and therefore have important things to do. (Or in the case of Auggie, who walks off the team, to not do.) Saul and Will have just been Rosencrantz and Guildensterning it off on their own. We’d all like to imagine ourselves as members of Group Type A, but the slacker squad would likely outnumber them by an order of magnitude.

But once Will’s story line switches from making the most of his remaining time to ending his life, that situational uniqueness is gone. Now he’s a character on a TV show, dying of cancer, and that’s all we’ve ever known him to be. We don’t feel the loss of him — as a friend, as an educator, as the one that got away — the way Saul and Jin do. His inability to admit his feelings for Jin until he’s drugged up near the very end feels like a small thing to care about in the context of the show’s events. Even the power of his farewell scene with Saul, who holds his hand as he prepares to click one last button on a touch-screen and end his life, is mitigated by the fact that he’s not really dying, but instead becoming a comically hoary sci-fi staple: a brain in a jar.

Two characters do stand out from the rest as capable of being load-bearing supports from the drama surrounding them. Jin is distinguished by the show’s best performance, courtesy of Jess Hong. Jin’s moral and emotional struggles seem to roil beneath the surface. Every other character is sure of their actions, whether Raj and Wade on one side or Auggie on the other. Jin is doing the work in spite of great doubt, and the almost physical effort required to keep going under those circumstances is visible in every scene.

The other standout is Wenjie. Despite her claim last episode that she could still help her Lord, she seems set adrift here, in what I presume is her last episode. (This is television: I hesitate to pronounce anyone dead without seeing a body. Also, this is sci-fi television, so even then, proceed with caution.) Though Rosalind Chao consistently and convincingly portrays Wenjie as a burned-out person, a dead woman walking, the character’s feelings about her place in the world vacillate wildly.

At one point she tells Saul she’s let more people down than anyone in history, and appears to offer him some kind of clue hidden within a joke about the folly of an angelic Einstein trying to play a duet with God. At another, though, she communes with Tatiana, the mysterious assassin we’ve seen on and off throughout the series, over their shared hope for the future and trust in the San-Ti — this despite the fact that Tatiana has been sent by the San-Ti to kill Wenjie.

But as Wenjie points out, she was about to take care of this herself, by leaping from the cliff upon which the now ruined Red Coast broadcast installation sits. This is another reason Wenjie stands out: She has the best-looking death of the bunch so far, silhouetted against the gray sunset. Just looking at it, you feel as if something important is happening and someone important is being lost. The episode closes with this image. It’s not a return to the spectacular endings of the first few episodes, but it’ll do.
