Now it's your turn to learn how to write a cover letter that shows off your skills and lands you that job! Just follow the steps we're about to dive into:

#1. Put Contact Information in the Header

Start your business cover letter by putting your contact details at the top, just like you would on your resume header . Here's what you should have up there:

  • Full Name. Place your full name near the top corner of the page.
  • Job Title. Use the exact title mentioned in the job ad you're applying for. With hiring managers juggling multiple roles, being specific helps them, which helps you.
  • Email Address. Go with a professional email. Ditch quirky emails you might have had in your younger days. For example, [email protected] is a no-go, but [email protected] works just fine.
  • Phone Number. Make sure it's a number where you can be reached easily. If the job is international, include the dialing code.
  • Location. Your city and state (or country) are enough. But if you're looking for a remote role or planning to move, make that clear in both your resume and cover letter.
  • Relevant Links (optional). Adding links to any important websites or social media profiles, like LinkedIn, is always a good idea.

After sorting out your details, focus on the hiring manager's contact information :

  • Company Name. Write down the company's name.
  • Hiring Manager’s Name. Include the hiring manager’s name, if you can find it.
  • Hiring Manager’s Title. If you find out the hiring manager’s exact job title, say, the Director of Business Development , use that title instead of just "Hiring Manager."
  • Location. Add the city and state (or country) of the company, especially if they have multiple locations. You can add the street address if you want to be super specific.
  • Date (optional). Including the date you wrote the cover letter adds a professional flair.

Once you've got all your contact details down, it's time to address the person who'll be reading your cover letter .

Trust us, "To Whom It May Concern" is not how you want to start your first impression.

Do a little homework first. Look up the company website, the job ad, or their LinkedIn profile to find the person who’s hiring for the job you’re after. You should be able to find their name somewhere and add it to your cover letter.

Then address them by using "Mr." or "Ms.", followed by their last name. If you're not certain about their gender or marital status, their full name works fine. For instance:

Similarly, you should add the name and address of the company or person you're writing to.

This shows you've done your research and allows the hiring manager to receive your letter if it's sent to a generic company email address.

The Date of Writing

You can do this by entering their name into the search bar or searching for a link to their LinkedIn page on their company website.

After you've addressed the cover letter to the most relevant person, you'll want to:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • List the role you're interested in.
  • Explain your interest.

Here's an example:

" Dear Hiring Manager,

Perhaps the most challenging part of the job application process is writing an effective cover letter. And yes, you should send one. Even if only one in two cover letters gets read, that’s still a 50% chance that including one could help you. Before you start writing, find out more about the company and the specific job you want. Next, catch the attention of the hiring manager or recruiter with a strong opening line. If you have a personal connection with the company or someone who works there, mention it in the first sentence or two, and try to address your letter to someone directly. Hiring managers are looking for people who can help them solve problems, so show that you know what the company does and some of the challenges it faces. Then explain how your experience has equipped you to meet those needs. If the online application doesn’t allow you to submit a cover letter, use the format you’re given to demonstrate your ability to do the job and your enthusiasm for the role.

A cover letter is a one-page business letter that you submit when applying to a job, along with your resume. As a piece of persuasive writing, your cover letter will aim to convey to the employer why you’re a great candidate for the role.

What is the purpose of a cover letter?

Your cover letter complements your resume by making it easy for the employer to see how your experience and interest connect to the position. Your goal is to convince the employer to interview you.

With your cover letter, you’ll aim to:

  • Highlight your qualifications:  You’ll show how your skills and experience relate to the employer’s needs for a specific position.
  • Showcase your motivation: You’ll demonstrate your enthusiasm for the specific position and the organization.
  • Reflect your voice and written communication skills: You’ll give the employer a sense of your personality and writing style.

When should I write a cover letter?

Not all jobs require cover letters. So, how do you decide whether to submit one?

Submit a Cover Letter when…

  • The posting explicitly requests that you do so
  • You’re applying to an opportunity at a mission-driven organization
  • You think that doing so could provide important information to the employer that they wouldn’t get from your resume

Consider Submitting a Cover Letter when…

  • It’s marked “optional” in an application, and you have the bandwidth to do so
  • You have content that you can easily recycle or repurpose into a tailored cover letter

No Need to Submit a Cover Letter when…

  • A posting specifically tells you not to submit one
  • There’s no way to submit one in an application portal, and doing so would require a serious workaround

If you’re applying to several similar opportunities, creating a draft cover letter in advance, geared toward that type of opportunity, can be a helpful way to save time in your actual application process.

How do I write a cover letter?

Your cover letter should articulate your qualifications and motivation for the position. Read the job description closely and research the organization. As you craft your cover letter, use examples that demonstrate your relevant skills, knowledge, and interests. The cover letter should be concise, clear, and well-organized.

Before Writing

Research the employer.

Learn enough about the organization to articulate why you are a strong fit for that firm. 

  • Review the firm’s website and LinkedIn page.
  • Speak with current or previous employees.
  • Read articles and social media for current news.

Analyze the job description

Look for skills, duties, and qualifications of the job so you can design your letter to match these as much as possible.

Reflect on your experience and motivation

Identify skills and personal qualities you have developed which will be useful in this role. Ask yourself:

  • What attracts you about this role/company/industry?
  • What have you have done in your work experiences, classes, internships, activities, projects, volunteer work, travel, etc., that is similar to the duties required of the job? 

Cover Letter Structure

As a business letter, the cover letter should include:

  • Heading: Include your name and contact information in the same format as your resume
  • Salutation: Address your letter to the specific individual who can hire you, if this is known. If the name is not included in the job description, address the letter to the Hiring Manager or title mentioned in the job description.
  • Body Paragraphs:  Discuss your experiences, interests, and skills to show the employer how you can add value to their team. See the section below for more guidance.
  • Signature Line: Include a closing and your name.

The cover letter should be one page, about three or four paragraphs, and single spaced. Use 10-12 point font and one inch margins. 

When applying online, upload your cover letter as a PDF file, unless another format is specified. When sending your resume and cover letter by email, you may write a short note or paste your cover letter in the body of your email (without the address header) and also attach the PDF file.

Cover Letter Content

Your cover letter should answer who, what, when, where and why you are applying for the opportunity. 

Introduction

State the position for which you are applying. If you have a referral or spoke with someone from the company, you can mention it in the introduction. Provide some basic information about yourself; this can include your class year and what you’re studying at Columbia. Briefly outline why you’re interested in the organization and what you bring in terms of relevant experience and skills. 

Body Paragraphs

These paragraphs will highlight your qualifications and strengths that are most relevant to the organization and position. Use the job posting and your research as clues to determine what the employer is seeking in a candidate. Have your resume beside you and reflect on what you want the employer to know about you. Are there experiences you want to expand upon that demonstrate your understanding of the role and ability to do the job requirements?

Structure the paragraphs based on relevance, not chronology. Lead with your most relevant skill or strongest experience.

Start each body paragraph with a clear topic sentence.  This can highlight a key skill set, a transferable experience, or a core area of knowledge you’ve built through your studies. Walk the reader through a project or experience, integrating the relevant skills you used and qualities you demonstrated. Provide details about your accomplishments and impact. Connect how these experiences have prepared you for this role and why you are motivated to do this job. There is no need to apologize if you feel you lack experience; focus on the accomplishments that you have.

Recap what you would bring to the organization and your interest in the position. Thank the employer for their consideration. Keep your tone positive and enthusiastic.

The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce yourself to the employer in a way that makes a positive first impression.

The cover letter is connected to your resume, but it should not duplicate exactly what is already on your resume. A good cover letter can inspire the employer to look more carefully at your resume. As with resumes, cover letters need to be well-written, error-free and tailored to each position to which you are applying. It is not advisable to write a “general” cover letter to be used for every application.

Before you begin writing a cover letter, you should review the job/internship posting and identify how your skills and experiences line up with those listed in the position.

A cover letter should make it clear to the employer why you are interested in the position and what value you can bring to the organization. Take a look at the cover letter samples and review the writing your cover letter handout for an outline of what to include in a cover letter.

Writing a business plan cover letter is an important part of presenting your business plan to potential lenders and investors when seeking investment. It’s the first thing an interested investor will read, and it’s your chance to make a good first impression.

In this article, we’ll see an overview of what a business plan cover letter is, why it’s important, and how to write it. We’ll also share a template, some examples, and useful tips you can use to write a formal cover letter for your own business plan and make it stand out.

What is a business plan cover letter?

A business plan cover letter is a formal document that accompanies your business plan and serves the purpose of introducing you and your business venture to potential investors or lenders. In other words, it’s a way for you to sell your business idea and show why you believe in it.

In the same way that a job seeker presents a cover letter alongside their resume to an employer in order to get hired, you need a cover letter to go alongside your business plan in order to secure funding or a business loan.

Why is a business plan cover letter important?

Through a cover letter, you show the investor why you are a good fit, what value your business can bring to them, and why they should invest in your company instead of your competitor.

To increase your chances of getting funding, it’s wise to tailor your cover letter based on the investor reading it. This means researching the companies the investor has previously invested in, their risk tolerance, and the values they look for in a business partner.

Although your business plans already details all crucial data, the cover letter should provide a glimpse into the current financial position of your company, including its profitability, debt, projections, and more.

The idea here is to let the investor know what they are getting into and reduce uncertainties. If they like your cover letter, they will be more interested to go through the whole business plan and ask questions before investing .

How to write a business plan cover letter?

Before you start writing a cover letter, make sure you’re done preparing a business plan and that there are no errors in it. A well-written cover letter isn’t going to get you very far if the business plan itself is not properly made.

Once your business plan is ready, follow these steps to write a cover letter:

Step 1. Create a header

The header of your business plan cover letter should include your name, the name of your business, your address, and your contact information. Next, write the date. And finally, write the name of the investor, the institution they are affiliated with, and their address.

If you’re sending the document via email, there’s no need to write a header, and you can jump to addressing the recipient with a formal greeting.

Step 2. Address the recipient

Unless you don’t know the name of the recipient, don’t make the mistake of addressing them as “Dear Investor” as that may give the impression that you haven’t researched the person you’re sending your business plan to.

Addressing the name of the recipient such as “Dear Mr. Green” or “Dear Ms. Jones” sets a good tone and is preferred over a generic greeting.

Step 3. Write a strong opening

The first paragraph of your letter should immediately grab the reader’s attention. This means stating the intent of the letter, the reason you want to work with this investor, and how you will use their money to scale the business.

Explain why you think your business is a good investment opportunity, and mention details such as the type of ownership, legal formation, the structure of the business , its history, and any notable achievements.

Step 4. Support your statements

Claims made without evidence don’t mean much, so you’re going to need to provide some form of data or facts to prove that you’re worth the risk.

This is admittedly hard to do if you’re a startup, since most startups fail. That’s why it’s a good idea to track these key startup metrics to assess your financial position and the overall viability of your business idea.

Step 5. Close with an acknowledgment

The last paragraph of a cover letter should emphasize three things: your interest in working with the investor, the value of this opportunity, and the timeline of how you’re expecting things to happen.

Once done, thank the reader for their time, express your eagerness to see their response, and request a meeting to discuss things further. End the letter with a formal sign-off.

Tips for writing a business plan cover letter

Here are some tips for writing a business plan cover letter:

  • Keep the letter short and descriptive, no more than one or two pages.
  • Use a formal, conversational tone, and avoid using slang, jargon, and contractions. The easier it is to read your letter, the better.
  • Address the reader by name, and avoid using “To Whom It May Concern.”
  • Mention your professional background, the competency of the management team, and how it all benefits the business.
  • If you’ve acquired funding in the past, highlight the individuals, institutions, or banks that have invested in your company.

Answer: Your No. 1 priority in your job search is to make you stand out among the sea of applicants. Start by personalizing your cover letter for the respective position.

Hiring managers are well-versed in spotting generic cover letters. Many don’t even mention the organization or the specific position. A cover letter customized for each role you apply to will set you apart from the other candidates.

Your cover letter should complement, not replicate, your resume. Resumes itemize employment information and qualifications, while customized cover letters provide an additional opportunity to tell your story and delineate your goals and intangibles. Cover letters should contextualize the value of the experience outlined in your resume.

You are essentially looking for a fit between your skills and personality to a defined role and work environment. A customized cover letter gives the hiring manager a preview of an interview. It signals that you are genuinely interested in the organization and discussing why you might be a prime candidate.

Remember to tailor the letter to showcase your relevant qualifications and accomplishments and project how you would fit in the role. Hiring managers look for people who will not only be a good fit but will also be an asset to their company for the long term. Request for raises should not surprise most employers. However, you should be thoroughly prepared to state your case for a more competitive wage.

First, do your research. Examine market salary data and assess how it compares with your own. Be sure to factor in your experience, job duties, and education. Review similar job postings to gauge comparable starting salary information and perks or bonuses used to attract talent. Understand your organization’s compensation philosophy and pay merit increase process. HR can help you better understand their pay structure if it is unclear.

Be prepared to confidently justify your request for higher pay. Has your workload increased due to staffing shortages? Have you taken on additional assignments or roles and learned new skills or technology? If possible, quantify the value you have added to their business.

Especially given the state of the economy, be prepared for your employer to stand their ground and not make out-of-cycle raises.

Next, plan a meeting with your manager with an apparent reason for the discussion and a brief agenda to stay on track – craft written talking points for the meeting. Choose a time and date when your workload is moderate. Be sure to communicate your satisfaction with the job and the organization. Be open to feedback and ask for a follow-up meeting to discuss the final decision. Your manager will most likely need to consult with HR or their manager before making any pay adjustment decisions.

Remember, your employer may be unable to accommodate your request due to budget constraints. If a pay increase is not feasible, inquire if there are considerations for earning a raise in the future. Be prepared with alternative suggestions, such as learning a new skill or taking on stretch assignments. Consider areas where the company is struggling and make suggestions on ways you can fill the gap. Be creative.

Regardless of the outcome, remain flexible and open. Look at alternative perks, benefits, or bonuses instead of a base pay increase.

A small boat has been spotted off the French coast just hours after Rishi Sunak's landmark Rwanda bill passed its final hurdles in the House of Commons.

This morning, Rishi Sunak has hailed the "landmark legislation" as "not just a step forward but a fundamental change in the global equation on migration".

The government has also said repeatedly that the legislation will be a deterrent to migrants wanting to make the perilous journey across the Channel, but it appears not to have worked for this group.

Although the Rwanda bill has passed through parliament, it has not yet received Royal Assent to make it law, and that is not expected to happen today.

On the heels of Rishi Sunak's flagship Rwanda bill passing its final stage in parliament overnight, we have just been speaking with the illegal migration minister, Michael Tomlinson.

Asked when the first flights will take off, the minister repeated what the PM said yesterday, which was a timeline of 10-12 weeks - despite reports suggesting the government will try and get them off sooner.

"We want flights to get off the ground as soon as possible, but there are certain steps that need to happen between now and then," he said.

Those steps, he said, are ensuring caseworkers are properly trained, which is "starting now" and ratifying the accompanying treaty.

But the minister said it is "inevitable" that there will be "challenges" to the legislation, and despite the bill having passed, he continued to criticise "Labour Lords" for trying to block the bill.

"There will be challenges, but we will meet them, we will overcome them," he declared.

Pushed for details on the plans in place to deport migrants, Mr Tomlinson refused to give any, telling Sky News: "There are those who are determined to stop this, and if I go into detail such as that with you, then that will help those who are wanting to stop this."

It was shortly after midnight when peers in the House of Lords finally ended their long fight against the government's Safety of Rwanda Bill.

So in the end there was no need for sleeping bags or camp beds, and dire threats made by government whips of votes at 3am or even later never materialised.

It had been a day that began with Rishi Sunak demanding that MPs and peers sat through the night if necessary until the bill became law.

And an hour or so before the final retreat by peers, the Commons had voted by a majority of 75 to throw out the last remaining Lords amendment to the bill.

That was on a monitoring process on whether Rwanda is a safe country, as the government claims. This amendment was driven not so much by Labour peers but by the lawyers - including many retired judges - in the Lords.

Throughout this long battle in the Lords, the legal fraternity in the Upper House has had a doughty shop steward in Lord Carlile, a top KC who was once a Liberal Democrat MP until he fell out with Nick Clegg, and is now a cross bencher.

But the key, pivotal moment during the latest round of ping pong between Lords and Commons came when the government made a major concession on demands for an exemption from deportation to Rwanda for Afghan interpreters fleeing the Taliban.

If you want to understand why people are still risking everything to cross the Channel, let me take you to a quiet street near Dunkirk, where chaos is in the air.

A group of around 40 or 50 people - migrants who have just failed in their latest attempt to cross the Channel - are being corralled down the road. They are tired and bruised. The police are around them, like teachers trying to take control of an unruly school trip.

Behind, police officers on foot, shouting instructions in French that almost nobody can understand. The group turns, as one, and heads down a side road that leads to a field.

"Non, non," shouts the policeman, exasperated. His head rolls back. "NON," he bellows, then runs after them.

These people are mostly strangers to each other, united by the single aim of reaching Britain. We had seen the group 12 hours earlier, crossing another field, clearly on their way to a nearby beach, but then they disappeared from our sight, heading off down an alleyway between houses.

Like so many people, they had attempted to make the crossing, and failed. This time, according to one of those we spoke to, the cause was the police, patrolling these beaches throughout the night.

"We have problems but we are being deported, so we want to go to Britain for a better life," says one. "Deport, deport," shouts another man.

So Britain may represent his last chance at asylum as a host of European nations start to increase the number of deportation orders they issue.

The government's Rwanda bill will finally become law after the Lords decided they would no longer oppose it following hours of wrangling.

For weeks, peers have been pushing back on the scheme - which seeks to deport asylum seekers arriving in the UK via small boats to the African nation - and trying to get ministers to make changes to the controversial legislation.

But after further rounds of so-called "ping pong" saw the bill flit between both Houses throughout Monday evening, both MPs and peers have now agreed to the plan, and it will soon become law - with Rishi Sunak pledging the first flights will take off "in 10 to 12 weeks" .

Home Secretary James Cleverly has said the bill will become law "within days", adding that its passage through the Lords was a "landmark moment in our plan to stop the boats".

Yvette Cooper MP, Labour's shadow home secretary, commenting on the Safety of Rwanda Bill passing in parliament, said: "The new Rwanda law is an extortionately expensive gimmick rather than a serious plan to tackle dangerous boat crossings. 

"The Rwanda scheme will cost more than half a billion pounds for just 300 people, less than 1% of asylum seekers here in the UK - and there is no plan for the 99%.

"Instead of spending £2m per asylum seeker on this failing scheme they should be putting that money into boosting our border security instead - that is Labour's practical plan."

James Cleverly has said the Rwanda bill passing through parliament is a "landmark moment in our plan to stop the boats".

In a social media video the home secretary said: "The Safety of Rwanda Bill has passed in parliament and it will become law within days.

"The act will prevent people from abusing the law by using false human rights claims to block removals. And it makes clear that the UK parliament is sovereign, giving government the power to reject interim blocking measures imposed by European courts.

"I promised to do what was necessary to clear the path for the first flight. That's what we have done.

"Now we're working day in and day out to get flights off the ground."

The Rwanda bill has been condemned as a "breach of international law" by human rights groups.

The charity Freedom from Torture, alongside Amnesty International and Liberty, criticised the government for ignoring the findings of the Supreme Court, which ruled the policy was unlawful in November. 

The group said the bill poses a "significant threat to the rule of law" by undermining what protects people from an abuse of power by the state and described parliament as a "crime scene".

They said the UK was increasingly gaining a reputation for "playing fast and loose with its international obligations" and called for the asylum system to be rebuilt.
