A recent article points out that “For all of the changes in television, none is more profound than the sheer volume of material available now. From NBC’s ‘About a Boy’ to SyFy’s ‘Z Nation,’ there were 352 original scripted series shown in 2014 on broadcast, cable and streaming services. That doesn’t count news, sports, talk shows, documentaries, movies or reality shows.”

Do you feel overwhelmed by all these offerings? What are your TV-viewing habits in general? What are your favorite shows? Do you sometimes binge-watch?

In “Death by Netflix?,” an article from last summer, Anna North warns about the consequences of too much television:

Binge-watching has now joined a pantheon already occupied by fast food, alcohol, and sitting on couches: It is extremely popular, and in large amounts, it appears to be deadly. First, the (sort of) good news: Americans no longer find the activity worthy of scorn. In a study by TiVo, only a third of respondents considered binge-watching “a negative term.” Last year, the figure was 53 percent. TiVo Chief Research Officer Jonathan Steuer somewhat gleefully explains the drop: “Today, though, the menu of available television fare has expanded to include thousands of channels, original programming from broadcast, cable and over-the-top sources and year-round premieres. It is now literally impossible for viewers to see all the shows they enjoy when they are first broadcast, and there’s no ‘summer break’ when viewers can catch up. But thanks to the control over cable, broadcast and OTT content afforded by TiVo, and to the proliferation of streaming services like Netflix, binge-viewing has rapidly become common practice.” TiVo also found that 69 percent of respondents had binged in the last month, and that the shows most binged-upon were “Breaking Bad” and “House of Cards.” It may be “literally impossible” to consume all the TV that now exists without spending enormous blocks of time glued to your couch, and binge-watching may simply be a normal way of experiencing television now. But, writes Caitlin Dewey of The Washington Post: “Even all this mainstream social acceptance probably won’t change the core connotation of the word ‘binge.’ ” She explains: “Urban Dictionary’s lead definition of the term, which dates from 2010, still uses this sentence as an example: “ ‘I felt like hell all day because I was up till 4:00 binge-watching season 2 of ‘Dexter.’ ” Which brings us to the bad news. A recent study of Spaniards’ TV habits found that those who watched three or more hours a day were twice as likely to die during the course of the research than those who watched less than an hour. Maggie Fox of NBC News reports: “For every two extra hours of watching TV over and above one hour a day, the volunteers were 44 percent more likely to die from heart disease or stroke, 21 percent more likely to die of cancer and 55 percent more likely to die from something else, and that’s taking in account their age, sex, whether they smoked, whether they were obese and whether they ate a healthy, Mediterranean diet.”

I love watching tv. Whenever I get home I always watch tv. Watching tv helps ease my stress and it gets my mind off of things. I watch about 2-3 hours of tv everyday. I enjoy it and i feel relaxed. I watch many different types of shows. Every show has their own unique and interesting parts to it and I like most of them. I have binge watched for many shows. I usually binge watch if i have missed lot of episodes on a show or if i started a show late and want to catch up on it. I prefer to binge watch during the weekends because I am free then but i also binge watch on the weekdays. No I don’t feel guilty when i watch too much tv because watching tv is not a bad thing as long as you are doing whatever you are supposed to be doing. If you can get your work done and still watch many hours of television then that is not a problem. I am worried about the health implications. I did not know watching television had anything to do with your health besides just sitting there and not getting exercise and being lazy. To prevent these I will watch fewer hours of tv. I don’t wish to live in a time where since there were no DVR’s or Netflix everyone watched programs at the same time. I like living in our time with a lot of shows and Netflix because there is a lot of varieties of shows you can choose to watch. Also, i think its better because a lot of people cant make it to the time a show was aired because they are busy. Netflix and DVR’s solve this problem and allows people to watch their shows whenever they want to. Binge watching has not affected my relationships with family or friends. It actually improves my relationships because we can all talk about the shows we’ve been watching. If my and my friends are watching the same show we would talk about it. However I have seen it affect peoples relationships negatively as well. For example if you choose to sit home and watch tv rather than going out with your friends then that could mean your are addicted. This will affect your relationships with your friends and family. I believe shows reveal your personality because its based on your personality you choose to watch certain shows. I am not proud of or embarrassed of watching any of my shows. I enjoy watching them and i could tell anyone about them. People watch many different types of shows. Every show has its own uniqueness and style to it.

On a regular basis I only tend to watch about an hour and half of TV a day because I have other priorities over watching TV, but over a long break or when I am sick I tend to watch more. This may not be the best type of TV to watch, but one of my favorite types of shows to watch are reality TV shows, I also love to watch TV drama such as Chicago PD and Chicago Fire. I have only binge- watched TV a couple of times, one time was when I started watching One Tree Hill, another time was over December break when I watched Gossip Girl and occasionally when I am sick I will binge-watch a show on Netflix. I do not feel guilty when I watch too much Tv because I rarely do, but when I do it just makes me feel lazy not so much guilty. The health issues mentioned in the article do not scare me because my life does not revolve around TV I do many other things; I go to school, play sports, spend time with my friends and much more. I do not wish we lived in a time where there was no Netflix because Netflix gives people an opportunity to watch shows they may not have been around to watch when they were televised originally. I watched my favorite show One Tree Hill on Netflix, because when it was on TV I had no idea about it and would have been too young to watch it then anyway. When I started watching it I couldn’t stop because I thought it was so good. Netflix also gives people the opportunity to watch some of their favorite shows with out commercials which is nice. Some people say that the way we watch TV has no benefits but some benefits may include being informed from the news on a regular basis and at some gyms they have TV so you are able to watch TV while working out which may motivate people to go to the gym. Drawback to the way people watch TV today is watching too much of it and not getting enough regular activity. I rarely binge-watch but the one time I did it did not affect any relationships because I still saw my family and friends on a regular basis like I always do. To me the TV shows I watch don’t say much about me because the shows I watch are different then who I am. A guilty television habit I have is reality TV for some reason I love watching reality TV on channels such as Bravo and E! and also watching Friends. Reality shows I like to watch include, The Real Housewives Wives of Beverly Hills, Orange County and New Jersey, but also Vanderpump Rules., Millionaire Matchmaker, Don’t be Tardy and occasionally Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

The television was a great invention. It replaced the radio and allowed the audience to watch something rather than just listening to someone talk. However in this day in time, the television has been abused. Originally the television was used to communicate news to people everywhere. Now although it still communicates the news, the television is used for of entertainment purposes. The old way of watching the television called for at most an hour a day and doing something else with your day. However, now watching television usually lasts longer than an hour a day. People now watch so much television it could be described as a full day activity. When the television first came out, the answer to the question “What did you do today?” was something like a grocery list, I played outside, did my homework, set the table for dinner…etc. However in today’s time an “acceptable” answer to the question is – I watched 3 seasons of “the Breaking Bad”. This is scary because people do not know how much television is too much. A little television is good as it could help you unwind after a long day or it could keep you updated with the weather or a traffic report to help you get along with your day. I personally do not watch a lot of television. I have a full day and when there is some free time I watch a little bit of television but it’s normally not more than an hour per day. I do feel guilty if I watch too much television because I feel like I could be doing something else that may be more productive. I do wish I live in a time were the television was not as important because it feels like the television as abducted so many peoples’ minds today. Too many conversations begin with “Did you see that show last night?” or “Are you caught up with watching this other show?”. I wish I was back in time when the television was not the most important thing or where you could only watch a show when it was scheduled to show and not whenever you felt like watching it on Netflix. I believe that the television has become a dictator to too many people in today’s time. I will admit however although I often feel guilty about it, I do enjoy a good binge-watch of a television series. I have recently gotten Netflix and the wide choices of shows and movies kind of overwhelm me, but it also makes me want to watch them all. I could sit and watch a season or two and not feel a thing but afterwards I would feel guilty that I wasted a whole day just not moving my eyes from a box the whole entire day. I feel that there is so much out there, a whole world to see and while I enjoy the binge watch I feel guilty that I have been watching the same screen I have been looking at my whole life.

In my evidence that, TV habits are normal for an teenager. I watch TV two and three hours a day. I usually watch TV when i eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and before going to bed too. The television is a good influence because we can know the news. we should watch TV with consciousness.

In my opinion, i love watching TV. whenever i get home, i watch TV. watching TV helps my mind off of things. i watch about 3-4 hours of TV everyday. i enjoy it. i feel relaxed. i watch many different types of shows, comedy, and drama. even show has their interesting parts to it and i like most of them. i believe shows revel you personality because it base on your personality you choose to watch certain shows. people watch many different types of shows. every show has its own uniqueness and style to it.

In the week days after school I usually spend about 4 hours of my time watching TV shows. There are so many good new TV shows that just came out recently like for example FLASH, ARROW, EMPIRE and some new episodes of and good old TV show. I sometime feel guilty because I can’t watch them right away maybe because of that I’m so lazy. There are so many good activates to do on a good day like going out side and exercise but I choose to stay inside the house and watch TV shows. Few years earlier my life was totally different because there were no Netflix or Hulu plus, on my spear time I use to read and do home work or help my parents, TV changed my life not in positive way even though I learned a lot of things.

I never liked watching TV. I thought it was a wasting time. Until I started watching movie and TV shows and now I’m so addicted to movies I can’t go a day without watching TV. I feel guilty when i watch too much TV. I did not know watching television had anything to do with your health besides just sitting there and not getting exercise and being lazy.

I definitely watch TV everyday but whenever I am done with house work. There is a lot of different kind of TV shows. But mostly I don’t get to watch it most of them. I don’t have a cable so I watch whatever channels my antenna caches. And I also have subscribed to a Netflix and I have couple of favorite shows from there “Breaking bad”, “house of cards”, and ‘Walking dead’. I cannot sit down and binge-watch. I get headache after I feel nausea, it just makes me feel sick. And also makes me worry about my and my child’s see sights. Who has a job, child, do different kind of activities or maybe even nature lovers don’t have too much time for TV. But we also multitask by watching a TV shows and doing something else. I don’t think it is good to go backwards, always go forwards. People are decide what is best of them watch TV all day or find something else to do. By saying that it is best be at this time with everything that we have.

I like to watch TV in my leisure time. I love to watch TV especially in the evening time. I watch TV almost 2 hours a day. I don’t think this is too much. I always watch movie, detective and mysterious show on TV. I think, usually I am not a binge-watch. Sometimes I watch TV more than 2 hours on weekends. That time I feel guilty. Because I think, it’s a waste of time. I can understand that, but that time I feel an attraction to watch TV. After reading this article, I get to know about the health implications for watching too much. In this case I am not in danger zone because I usually don’t like to watch TV too much. I think we can get many benefits from watching TV such as we can know what is happening around the world, what are the new inventions. We also can know about the lifestyle of other people, about different culture, about weather news. It has some drawbacks or disadvantages also. For binge watching, people can face ear problem, eye problem. It also causes for heart diseases. When I watch TV too much, sometimes it has affected my relationships because my mother scolds me. She tells me not to waste time for TV. I think watching TV isn’t a bad habit but spending many hours for watching TV is a bad habit.

I don’t watch TV all the day. I watch TV 2 hours in the evening time in weekdays. I watch TV 3 or 4 hours on weekends. I like to watch horror and romantic movies. I love to watch Indian shows on TV. My favorite shows are “Master Chef of India”, “Mohabbtein”, and “CID”. I watch these shows every day. I don’t binge watch. Sometimes I feel guilty when I watch too much TV. Whenever I watch some interesting in TV then I forget everything that what is happening near to me and who is calling me. Sometimes my mom gets upset of me that I watch too much TV. But I rarely watch too much TV. I am worried about the health implications mentioned in this article. I think that we don’t have to watch too much TV because it will be effect on our health. There is nothing wrong to watch TV, but we don’t have to binge watch. There are some benefits and some drawbacks of the way we watch TV. If we watch TV just 1 or 2 hours a day and watch something interesting and something good, then we get benefits from it. If we watch TV all the day, then it will be effect on our mind and health. Actually I don’t binge watch, so I think there’s no any affect with my family and friends. I don’t think that there’s any guilty in television pleasures. I watch reality shows that make me proud. I don’t feel embarrassed because I know that I watch something nice and interesting and it will give me some knowledge. I think watching TV is not a bad habit if we watch something good and interesting and if we don’t watch too much TV.

Well, I think watching TV it’s an excitement or pleasure. I usually watch TV 20 or 30 minutes. I don’t watch TV too much. Whenever I get some free time then I like to watch TV. My favorite show in TV is crime show and geographic channel… Most of the time I watch different crime shows on TV. There are some shows that matched with our normal life because all events are consists of true events. Again, by watching geography or discovery channel I can learn many new animals and spices. I think I’m not a binge – watcher. I only watch TV on my leisure time only and it’s about 20 or 30 minutes. I love to watch TV but I never felt any guilty or proud by watching TV. Because of not watching TV too much I never thought about the effect of TV. I totally agree with the author that if anybody watches TV too much it will be very much harmful for him/her. I think if anyone sees the same TV shows every day, it will be becoming the habit of him/her and that will be affecting her body, mind and expression. I believe there is no benefit of watching the same TV program every day. If I watch TV like a binge watcher then it definitely affects my relationship. If I don’t give my friends, family and my husband any attention they’ll fell that I don’t care about them. To have a better relationship I have to pay attention to them instead of watching TV. I think when I watch TV it makes me relax and I find pleasure of it. I never felt guilty or proud. I watch TV that I can tell the people about new things and new news. I can know the update things what are going on the current world. Thus I can able to enrich myself.

I love to watch TV but nowadays I don’t get enough time to watch my favorite shows. Now I hardly watch TV for not more than an hour in weekdays but, my favorite shows only telecast on weekends. I love to watch realty shows, mysterious detective shows like master chief, private investigator, CID and Adalat. I watch only when I am free and I don’t think watching a few shows is known to be binge watch. Yes, I always feel guilty when I watch too much TV because I can’t help my mom in household things and also the interest grew so high that I don’t want to stay away from sitting in front of TV. No, I am not worried about the health implications but my mom is always used to worry about my health. She always used to say do exercise instead of watching TV, you are putting on your weight and watching TV is not good for your eyes. Instead of watching TV I used to sleep for an hours. There are many benefits of watching TV like we get to know what happens in our surroundings, news, people feel relax when they watch TV any many more, but on other side there are many drawbacks too. Binge watches effect on eyesight and many cardiac problems. According to me watch TV but, don’t become binge watcher.

I do not watch TV often. I do it once a while. My favorite’s shows are: family feud, news, Judge Judy and divorce court. I prefer watch those show because I think I can learn from them while watching. I cannot say that I feel guilty because I do not watch too much. I think people should not binge-watch because it is not healthy. When you watch TV too much you become lazy. You do not want to do anything you want to stay definitely in front of it. People who spend all the times watch TV might lose relationship with others. They ignore what happen around them. I think it should not be like this. I think people should be aware to their as much as they can while they watching TV.

I use to watch around two and a half hours of TV during the all-day but not anymore. My life changed and I don’t have that much time to do it anymore. In the present sometimes I watch maybe 5 hours of television during the week. My favorite shows are, discovery channel, suspense series, showbiz programs. I don’t binge watching television fortunately. Since I don’t watch that much television I don’t feel guilty for that reason, but yes I feel guilty when sometimes I’m more time that I’m supposed to be surfing the web. Health implications mention in the article must be a red light for viewers to pay attention. That may help them to change their habits and find other activities that are good for their health. Sometimes I wish that there were not that many distractions available because now is harder for a person to focus in important things with too many distractions around, but at the same time is our responsibility to be in control of our wants.

Everyone watches TV. Somebody watch TV more and some watch less. I watch TV usually not every day. Because too much watch television is an unnecessary things. If you daily watch important news, geographical things, educational things and many more things. On the other hand for the enjoyable time I watch something like movie, sports , drama , comedy and these are only for a few moments only.

I always try to watch TV every day. But I cannot do it every day. Because in the morning I go to my college class and then I go to home and finish my lunch and take some rest and read some lessons and at night I go to my work.

In my free days especially at night I do Facebook chatting, watching movies and many more interesting things.

T.V in my opinion, has gotten way out of hand. I personally try o watch as little T.V possible but when I do, I tend to just watch netflix. I enjoy documentaries on the universe and the boondocks. I will watch T.V or two hours at a time maximum but I try to stay away from it as much as possible. When I watch a lot of T.V I do not feel guilty because at that time, watching T.V was what i really wanted to do and enjoyed doing. Time spent doing what you enjoy is not time wasted. I am not worried about any o these health implications because I have been watching television my whole life and i do not all victim to any of these problems. I thin that people should watch different shows because it reflects their personality. It also brings up conversation about shows that one has never watched. The ind o television that a person watches can say a lot about them. If someone enjoys comedy’s, they might lie to laugh or make jokes. Or i someone likes to watch romance movies, they might enjoy romantic attachment. People are proud or shameful o the ind o television hey watch because of what is deemed acceptable by the standards of society. People should be free to watch whatever television show they like.

I don’t watch TV too often but when I do I binge-watch. I watch shows on Netflix. Netflix offers tons of shows with all of their made seasons and episodes. I watched Prison Break in about a time span of one month. It had four seasons and about ninety episodes in all if I recall correctly. I watched four-six episodes a night, that’s a good three hours. Right after I finished Prison Break I started Criminal Minds. I actually just finished the fourth season last night out of nine. There are twenty-six episodes in a season and I watch from three to six in one night. I need to know what happens in the next episode it is just too good to watch one episode, that is close to an hour and close the laptop for the night. I am not worried about the health implications that this mentions because I am very active. I play soccer all year round, about five times a week, two hours at a time. I do get worried when I watch too much, I could be hanging out with friends or socializing with my family. People nowadays have little time to watch their shows at the aired time due to work, school, sports or other priorities than sitting in front of a screen. I think that is a good thing about Netflix and DVR’s, people can watch their desired shows at anytime they want. Another pro for Netflix and DVR is that it allows people to watch their favorite shows without needing to sit through the commercials which is nice. A drawback of this technology is that teenagers like myself watch Netflix too often. The television shows that I watch do reflect on who I am, or at least I think so. I watch Criminal Minds, Prison Break, The Following and lastly Law and Order SVU. I enjoy these shows because I want to work in the field that all of these shows have in common. All of these shows have criminal justice involved or law enforcement.

I love watching TV very much. It has so much fun and generally comedy, mythology and documentary can glue me to the couch for a longer time. If there’s some program that I love very much, I will probably be a TV binger. However, if I don’t like the TV program, I won’t spend a lot of time on it even though the friends and classmates around me like and talk about it pretty much. I love watching TV, while sometimes I feel guilty when I watch too much. Because I feel like I just wasted my spirits and time. When I watch an interesting TV program concentrated, I don’t think anything else except the program. I don’t move or excise enough, either. You may have such experience that you even dream about the plots of the left episodes when you sleep. That is not good for my sleeping and health. Therefore, I worry about the health problems mentioned in the article. I’d like to set a comfortable and healthy schedule for watching in the future, which neither does harm to my health nor plays bad roles during my college education. I can’t imagine what our lives could be if there is no or only few shows or TV programs. It’s so good to have some streaming services and cable, such as Netflix and DVRs. They have been making our lives become more colorful and interesting. We don’t have to go to France to see how Eiffel Tower looks like, go to England to see how Big Ben looks like, go to Russia to see how Red Square looks like or go to China to see how The Great Wall looks like…We can easily have what we want with TV programs. People can gain so much joy and diverse information through TV programs and streaming services, even though there are drawbacks of them. Nevertheless, anything has two sides. I don’t binge-watch very often, so it doesn’t affect my relationships with my family, friends or romantic partners a lot. If there is, it probably is that I don’t want to make meal when I am putting my head in TV. I want to relax myself when I watch TV. However, it’s not a good idea to be up till 3a.m., 4a.m. or even much later. I only did it once and I never want to it again. In brief, it’s necessary to have TV programs, streaming services and cable services. We should control ourselves not to binge-watch too much because we want to get happiness, fun and useful information from watching TV, but not be possessed by it.

I watch TV whenever I have free time, but most of the time it’s just on for background noise. My favorite shows include Doctor Who, Top Gear, The Walking Dead, Supernatural, Sherlock, Merlin, The Daily Show, @Midnight, and probably more but I can’t think of them at the moment. I have binge-watched most of these shows, whether it was through Netflix or there just so happened to be a marathon on and I wasn’t doing anything of major importance that day anyways, which usually leads to a flood of emotions during and after watching. I also watch specific channels as well such as BBC America, Food Network, Comedy Central, SyFy, History Channel, and NatGeo to name a few. I have spent the entire day on several occasion without changing the channel once. I usually have the TV on while I’m doing my homework and sometimes it distracts me from getting my work done on time. I feel guilty when my parents stay up with so I’m not the only one awake and to make sure that I don’t fall asleep with my face in my textbook (which I have actually done before). I do worry about the health problems associated with sitting on the couch all day watching TV mainly because I’m 17 and I feel like I have the back of a 70 year old, but that could have also been caused by my extremely heavy backpack I have to lug to and from school everyday. I personally like watching TV shows when they first air because I get to experience the show at the same time as everyone else and I don’t feel left out, but then there’s the endless waiting for the next show to air. Netflix is very helpful for when you want to watch a series that is already a couple seasons in, but then you get hit with all the emotions of an entire season in over the course of several hours which can be detrimental to ones mental health. Binge-watching has actually been great for my relationships with my family and friends. My family binge-watches shows together all the time. We watched The Walking Dead together and contemplated what we thought would happen in the next episode. A lot of my friends watch the same shows and I would feel left out whenever they would talk about them because I didn’t watch the same shows. It wasn’t peer pressure because I actually wanted to watch the shows, I just hadn’t watched them when they watched them. Now that I have watched shows like Doctor Who and Supernatural, my friends and I have more things in common and can have full conversations about the shows. I love fantasy, mystery and adventure so I watch shows that incorporate those themes. I absolutely hate reality TV; I just don’t understand why they have TV shows in the first place. Why should I watch a show about someone else’s life when half of what happens on the show is made up and scripted? I’d rather spend my time watching something with actual meaning and that makes you think. I adore all of my shows and proudly wear images and saying from them on t-shirts, socks, hats, I have buttons pinned onto my backpack dedicated to the shows and posters and other merchandise all over my room. Most of the shows I watch are nerdy and geeky, but that’s what I love about them.

I watch tv on Friday and Saturday nights. Sometimes I ll watch a Cavs game if they are playing during the week. I like watching Treemasters and the History Channel especially about WWII and Vietnam Nam. If it’s good I’ ll watch it for about 3 or 4 hours. I used to really binge watch, like the Disney channel, when I was younger. I don’t do that anymore because I am pretty busy with school and basketball.

This article was about the amount of tv people watch today. Many people binge watch tv shows with Netflix, DVR’s, or other online apps. Anna North wrote an article called “Death by Netflix?” This article explains the binge watching through Netflix and the problems with this. I watch so much tv. I could binge watch a show on Netflix for days. I could spend an entire day just watching tv. Some shows that are my favorite are One Tree Hill, 90210, Prison Break, and Grey’s Anatomy. I don’t feel guilty at all when I watch tv too much. I could get bored after watching for a whole day though I kind of want to go out and stop staring at a screen. Although, I’m not really interested in the health implications mentioned in the article. The article says, “For every two extra hours of watching TV over and above one hour a day, the volunteers were 44 percent more likely to die from heart disease or stroke, 21 percent more likely to die of cancer and 55 percent more likely to die from something else.” I don’t care because I love to watch tv and I don’t think any of those things will happen to me anytime soon. I would not want to go to where Netflix and DVR’s did not exist. I think being able to use these programs is easier to watch your favorite shows and it gives you something to do when you’re bored. I would agree though that these programs aren’t so good in that too much tv is not good for you. Binge watching does not affect any of my relationships with my friends or family. Although, sometimes my dad complains that I watch too much. Once you get into a good show it’s hard to stop watching. I also usually have nothing better to do so binge watching gives me something to do.

I don’t watch as much t.v. as I used to. I watch my favorite shows from time to time, and it’s usually on netflix. I binge watch when I have nothing really planned for the day, and I try to get stuff done in between.

What you tend to watch, does give a person a perception about you but it is not say everything about you. The thing that i find pleasurable while watching tv is drinking a beverage or eating big dinners and snacks. I like to watch the walking dead. Another show i like is the fresh prince of bel-air, which is more of a comedy type shoe.

I don’t watch a bunch a TV now and days because I’m always super busy after school but when I get a chance on the weekends, I might watch at least 5 hours of TV. My favorite TV show is The Walking Dead and WWE. I don’t binge watch since i rarely watch TV anyways. I don’t watch a lot of TV and i don’t have to worry about health issues because I’m always busy being active and away from a TV. I love how there is now Netflix and more shows compared to the old days because it must have been awful to not have a lot of entertainment that you could enjoy at home. A benefit of watching TV is enjoying yourself with entertainment and TV helps relieve stress. What I watch shows that I am into action and great television and no there is no television programs that I feel guilty about.

What is the TV? What is an Habit? TV is a telecommunication medium and a kind of entertainment for people and “A medium of control social”. You Are What You Watch? The Social Effects of TV

There’s new evidence that viewing habits can affect your thinking, political preferences, even cognitive ability.

tv habits essay

By Jonathan Rothwell

Other than sleeping and working, Americans are more likely to watch television than engage in any other activity .

A wave of new social science research shows that the quality of shows can influence us in important ways, shaping our thinking and political preferences, even affecting our cognitive ability.

In this so-called golden age of television , some critics have pointed out that the best of the form is equivalent to the most enriching novels. And high-quality programming for children can be educational. But the latest evidence also suggests there can be negative consequences to our abundant watching, particularly when the shows are mostly entertainment.

The harm seems to come not so much from the content itself but from the fact that it replaces more enlightening ways of spending time.

‘Sesame Street’ as a social experiment

Cognitive ability is a complex characteristic that emerges from interactions between biological dispositions, nutrition and health, parenting behaviors, formal and informal educational opportunities, and culture.

Studying the connection between intelligence and television consumption is far from straightforward, but researchers have developed compelling ways to isolate the effects of television.

Some of the best research has been done on the television program “Sesame Street.” The show, which began in 1969, was meant to develop early literacy, numeracy and emotional skills for children of preschool age. A detailed analysis of the show’s content in its first and second years reveals that 80 percent of the program was dedicated to those goals, with the rest meant to entertain.

Researchers randomly assigned groups of low-income children age 3 to 5 into an experimental group and a control group. In the experimental group, parents were given access to the show if they lacked it and encouraged in person once a month to have their children watch the show.

[The topics new parents are talking about. Evidence-based guidance. Personal stories that matter. Sign up for the NYT Parenting newsletter for the info you need.]

Almost all (93 percent) parents of children in the experimental group reported that their children subsequently watched the show, compared with roughly one-third of children in the control group (35 percent). Among watchers, those in the experimental group also watched more frequently.

Over six months, from November 1970 to May 1971, the experimental group gained 5.4 I.Q. points — a large effect — relative to the control group and showed stronger evidence of learning along several other dimensions. Gains in cognitive performance were especially large for those who viewed the show frequently relative to those who did so rarely or never. A more recent meta-analysis of published research in 15 countries shows that “Sesame Street” has similar effects around the world.

In newly published research , the economists Melissa Kearney and Phillip Levine examined longer-term effects of “Sesame Street” by comparing the educational outcomes of children and young adults in counties more or less likely to have access to the program during its early years. They found that children living in counties with better “Sesame Street” coverage were less likely to be held behind a grade level.

Other experimental research is consistent with the original “Sesame Street” findings. Low-income prekindergarten children scored higher on a social competence index six months after being randomly assigned to an experimental group, in which their parents were encouraged to replace age-inappropriate television with educational television.

Less reading and more watching

In Norway, and a handful of other developed countries, average I.Q. scores have declined slightly in recent years, after rising for many decades. This is known as the negative Flynn effect, a variation of the more famous Flynn effect , which is named after the psychologist who first published comprehensive evidence of I.Q. gains over time. Among native Norwegian men taking an exam at age 18 for military conscription, those born in 1974 scored two I.Q. points higher than those born in 1987.

In an academic article published this year, the Norwegian economist Oystein Hernaes and his co-authors attributed some of this decline in I.Q. scores to access to cable television, which also coincided with a sharp decline in reading. After the introduction of cable in 1981, Norwegian teenagers and young adults drastically cut back on daily time spent reading from 1980 to 2000, and increased their time watching TV. Moreover, relative to public television, cable television had far less educational content and was focused on entertainment and advertisements.

To estimate the effect of cable television on I.Q. scores, the Norwegian scholars analyzed data on the introduction of cable network infrastructure by municipality. They calculated years of exposure to cable by considering the age of eventual test takers when cable became available in their municipality. They controlled for any potential geographic bias by comparing siblings with greater or less exposure to cable television based on their age when cable infrastructure was put in.

They estimate that 10 years of exposure to cable television lowered I.Q. scores by 1.8 points. In related research , Mr. Hernaes finds that exposure to cable television reduced voter turnout in local elections.

Berlusconi television

A similar study was conducted by the Italian economist Ruben Durante and his co-authors and released in this month’s issue of the American Economic Review. They examined the introduction of Silvio Berlusconi’s television network, Mediaset, which specialized in light entertainment such as game shows featuring scantily clad women.

The economists document that Mediaset devoted almost no programming to educational content and did not offer news in early years, whereas its main competitor — the state-owned channel — devoted the majority of its airtime to news or educational material.

To study the effects of Mediaset, Mr. Durante and his co-authors obtained data on the location of Mediaset transmitters in 1985 and calculated the strength of the broadcasting signal in every Italian municipality based on the position of the transmitters and other technical features of the municipality.

They found that children raised in areas with greater access to Mediaset (a standard deviation in signal strength) had lower cognitive scores as adults by the equivalent of 3 to 4 I.Q. points.

People more exposed to Mediaset as children were also less likely to be civically engaged adults and more likely to vote for parties with populist tendencies like Forza Italia and the Five Star Movement.

A handful of American studies along these lines have focused on the political consequences that news media coverage can have, showing that exposure to Fox News could increase Republican Party vote shares significantly, and that exposure to MSNBC increased Democratic Party voting share (but with a much weaker effect).

Art and public health

We know that education increases cognitive ability, so it stands to reason that educational television would also have a positive effect.

Concerns about culture are hardly novel: Plato made a case for regulating the quality of artistic productions to avoid the corruption of youth and weakening of their character. Twenty-three centuries later, it is easier than ever to placate children as well as lose yourself in entertainment options — in the ocean of online videos, podcasts, cable, and streaming shows and movies.

These options are most likely harmless. Some provide relaxation, and others may modestly reshape cultural attitudes for the better; one study found that the introduction of cable TV empowered women in India. High-quality shows and films can be inspiring, even edifying.

Still, media providers and advertisers compete aggressively for our attention. Most lack the altruistic motivations that guided the producers of the original “Sesame Street.” The evidence from social science suggests that biased or sensationalist news programs may misinform citizens or discourage civic engagement, and that we should also be cautious about what we give up for the sake of entertainment.

How to know if your TV habits are a problem, and what to do about it

by Mark Griffiths, The Conversation

How to know if your TV habits are a problem – and what to do about it

The term "binge watch" was a contender for the Oxford English Dictionary's 2013 word of the year. Although it didn't win ("selfie" ultimately took the crown ), this pointed to the rise of what was becoming a popular activity of watching multiple episodes of a TV show in a single sitting.

Today, millions of us—including me—regularly consume our favorite series in this way. The proliferation of streaming services over recent years has made it very easy to do. Unsurprisingly, during COVID lockdowns, research shows many of us spent more time binge watching than usual.

But can binge watching become problematic or addictive? And if you can't tear yourself away, what can you do?

Problematic binge watching isn't defined by the number of episodes watched (although most researchers agree it's at least two in a row), or a specific number of hours spent in front of the TV or computer screen. As with other addictive behaviors, more important is whether binge watching is having a negative impact on other aspects of the person's life.

Over many years studying addiction , I've argued that all addictive behaviors comprise six core components . In relation to binge watching, this would mean:

  • Binge watching is the most important thing in the person's life (salience)
  • The person engages in binge watching as a way of reliably changing their mood: to feel better in the short-term or to temporarily escape from something negative in their life (mood modification)
  • Binge watching compromises key aspects of the person's life like relationships and education or work (conflict)
  • The number of hours the person spends binge watching each day has increased significantly over time (tolerance)
  • The person experiences psychological and/or physiological withdrawal symptoms if they're unable to binge watch (withdrawal)
  • If the person manages to temporarily stop binge watching, when they engage in the activity again, they go straight back into the cycle they were in previously (relapse).

In my view, any person who fulfills these six components would be genuinely addicted to binge watching. A person who only fulfills some of these may be exhibiting problematic binge watching, but wouldn't be classed as addicted by my criteria.

Like many other behavioral addictions, such as sex addiction, work addiction and exercise addiction, binge watching addiction is not officially recognized in any psychiatric manuals. We also don't have accurate estimates of the prevalence of problematic binge watching. But research into this phenomenon is growing.

A look at the evidence

In the latest study on this topic, a research team in Poland surveyed 645 young adults, all of whom reported that they had watched at least two episodes of one show in a single sitting. The researchers wanted to understand some of the factors underlying problematic binge watching.

The authors (who based their definition of problematic binge watching partly on my components model of addiction ) used a questionnaire they developed in an earlier study to assess problematic binge watching among participants. Questions included: "How often do you neglect your duties in favor of watching series?" "How often do you feel sad or irritated when you can't watch the TV series?" and "How often do you neglect your sleep to binge watch series?"

Participants had to give answers on a six-point scale from one (never) to six (always). A score above a certain threshold was deemed indicative of problematic binge watching.

Using a range of other scales, the researchers found that impulse control difficulties, lack of premeditation (difficulties in planning and evaluating the consequences of a given behavior), watching to escape and forget about problems, and watching to avoid feeling lonely were among the most significant predictors of problematic binge watching.

Using the same data, the researchers reported in an earlier study that problematic binge watching had a significant association with anxiety-depressive syndrome. The greater the symptoms of anxiety and depression, the more problematic a person's binge watching was.

Other studies have reported similar findings . A study of Taiwanese adults , for example, found problematic binge watching was associated with depression, anxiety around social interaction and loneliness.

An American study found the behavior was associated with depression and attachment anxiety. Most related studies—like this one from Portugal—have also shown escapism to be a key motivation of problematic binge watching.

In terms of personality traits, research has shown that problematic binge watching appears to be associated with low conscientiousness (characterized by being impulsive, careless and disorganized) and high neuroticism (characterized by being anxious and prone to negative emotions). We see these types of associations in addictive behaviors more generally.

Breaking the habit

If you want to cut down on the number of episodes you watch in one sitting, my golden rule is to stop watching mid-way through an episode. It's really hard to stop watching at the end of an episode as so often the show ends with a cliff-hanger.

I also suggest setting realistic daily limits. For me, it's 2.5 hours if I have work the next day, or up to five hours if I don't. And only start watching as a reward to yourself after you've done everything you need to in terms of work and social obligations.

Remember, the difference between a healthy enthusiasm and an addiction is that the former adds to your life, whereas the latter detracts from it. If you feel binge watching is taking over your life, you should seek a referral from your GP to see a clinical psychologist. Most addictions are symptomatic of other underlying problems.

is tv taking away the habit of reading

Is Tv Taking Away The Habit Of Reading [Critic’s Perspective]

1. introduction.

Reading is an essential skill for a successful life. It helps us to gain knowledge, develop our imaginations, and build our vocabulary. However, in recent years, television has become a major source of entertainment and information, often taking away time that could be spent reading. This raises the question: Is TV taking away the habit of reading?

2. The Benefits of Reading

Reading is an essential part of learning and developing knowledge. It has been shown to have numerous benefits, both mental and physical. Reading can help improve memory, increase concentration, and reduce stress. It can also help build empathy and understanding of other cultures and ideas.

Mentally, reading can help stimulate the mind and improve language skills. It can also help to increase imagination, creativity, and critical thinking. Reading can help people to develop a better understanding of the world around them, as well as the ability to think more deeply and analytically.

Physically, reading can help improve vision, reduce eye strain, and even reduce the risk of developing certain eye diseases. It can also help to reduce the risk of developing mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.

Reading can also help to improve relationships. Studies have shown that couples who read together have better communication skills and more meaningful conversations. Reading can also help to improve communication between family members and friends.

Finally, reading can be a great way to relax and escape from the stresses of everyday life. It can be a great source of entertainment and can help to reduce boredom. Reading can also help to reduce stress levels and improve mood.

In conclusion, reading has numerous benefits, both mental and physical. It can help to improve memory, increase concentration, and reduce stress. It can also help to build empathy and understanding of other cultures and ideas, as well as improve language skills and imagination. Reading can also help to improve relationships and reduce boredom. For these reasons, reading is an essential part of learning and developing knowledge.

3. The Drawbacks of Watching TV

Watching television is a popular pastime for many people, but there are some drawbacks to this activity. TV can be a distraction from more important activities, such as reading, and it can also lead to unhealthy habits, such as overeating or sedentary behavior. Additionally, the content of some television programs can be damaging to mental and emotional health, such as those that promote violence, aggression, or negative stereotypes.

One of the major drawbacks of watching TV is the amount of time it can take away from more productive activities. Studies have shown that the average American watches more than four hours of television a day, which is a significant amount of time that could be spent doing something more meaningful. For children, this can mean less time spent outside playing or engaging in other activities that promote physical and mental health. For adults, it can mean less time spent reading, learning, or engaging in meaningful conversations.

Another potential downside to watching TV is that it can lead to unhealthy habits. Studies have linked excessive television viewing to obesity, as it can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. In addition, television can be a distraction from engaging in physical activity, which is essential for good health.

The content of some television programs can also be damaging to mental and emotional health. Programs that promote violence, aggression, or negative stereotypes can lead to an increase in these behaviors, as well as anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. Additionally, some programs can be addictive, leading to a decrease in productivity and an increase in negative behaviors.

Finally, television can be a distraction from reading, which is an important activity for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Reading can also be a source of entertainment, knowledge, and relaxation, which are all important components of a healthy lifestyle.

In conclusion, there are several drawbacks to watching television, including the potential for unhealthy habits, the potential for damaging content, and the potential to take away from more meaningful activities such as reading. It is important to be aware of these potential drawbacks and to find a balance between watching television and engaging in other activities that promote physical and mental health.

4. The Effects of TV on Reading Habits

It is a well-known fact that television has become a major source of entertainment for people of all ages. However, many people are concerned about the effects that television has on reading habits. In recent years, the amount of time that people spend watching television has increased significantly, leading to a decrease in the amount of time spent reading.

Studies have shown that excessive television viewing can lead to a decrease in reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. This is because television does not require viewers to actively engage with the material in order to understand it, while reading requires readers to actively engage with the text in order to understand it. Additionally, television can often be a distraction from reading, as it is easier to become absorbed in the visuals and sound of television than in the words of a book.

Furthermore, television can also lead to a decrease in reading motivation . This is because television often provides instant gratification in the form of quick, easy-to-digest stories, while reading requires more effort and can be more difficult to understand. As a result, people may be more likely to choose television over reading in order to satisfy their need for instant gratification.

Finally, television can also lead to a decrease in vocabulary and comprehension skills. This is because television does not require viewers to actively engage with the material in order to understand it, while reading requires readers to actively engage with the text in order to understand it. Additionally, television often features simplified language that may not challenge viewers to stretch their vocabulary or comprehension skills.

In conclusion, it is clear that television can have a significant impact on reading habits. Excessive television viewing can lead to a decrease in reading comprehension and critical thinking skills, a decrease in reading motivation, and a decrease in vocabulary and comprehension skills. Therefore, it is important to find a balance between television viewing and reading in order to ensure that reading habits are not adversely affected.

5. How to Balance Reading and Watching TV

Balancing reading and watching TV can be a challenge, but it is possible with a few simple steps. First, set aside a specific amount of time each day for reading. This can be done in the morning, during a lunch break, or in the evening before bed. Make sure to set aside at least 30 minutes each day, but more time is better.

Second, limit the amount of time you spend watching TV. This can be done by setting a timer or limiting how long you can watch each day. For example, limit yourself to two hours of TV per day or one hour on weekdays and two hours on weekends.

Third, use technology to help you keep track of your reading and TV habits. There are many apps available that can help you track your reading and TV habits. This can help you make sure you are keeping your reading and TV time in balance.

Fourth, make sure to read a variety of different types of books. This will help keep your interest in reading and make sure you are not just reading the same type of book over and over.

Finally, make sure to get plenty of rest. This will help you stay alert and focused on reading, instead of zoning out while watching TV.

By following these steps, you can easily keep your reading and TV habits in balance. This will help you stay engaged with both activities and keep your reading skills sharp.

6. Conclusion

In conclusion, TV can have both positive and negative impacts on our reading habits. It can be a great tool for entertainment, education, and relaxation, but it can also lead to a decrease in our reading habits. To ensure that we can reap the benefits of both TV and reading, it is important to find a balance between the two. We can do this by setting aside specific times of the day for both activities, and making sure that we are mindful of how much time we spend on each activity. By creating a healthy balance between reading and watching TV, we can make sure that we get the most out of both activities and enjoy the best of both worlds.

The early programmes on the experimental broadcasts were generally educational programmes for school children and farmers.

Doordarshan has evolved over the years. It had a monopoly as it was the only channel available to the Indian television audience. However, today, we have many channels other than Doordarshan. This change occurred in the 1990s with the arrival of private channels. Several regional channels came into the television scene during this period. Apart from the regional channels, a host of international channels like CNN, BBC and Discovery are also available to the Indian television audience.
