'You May Never Know Whether Salman Khan's Radhe Your Most Wanted Bhai is a Hit or a Flop'

OTT platfiorms usually do not release their viewership numbers, and with hardly any box office revenue, it will be hard to gauge whether Radhe is a success.

Salman Khan’s films have been sure shot winners at the box office for years, irrespective of critics’ reviews. His films usually release around some festival or extended weekend, and cinemas look forward to earning extra profits. His last theatrical release, Dabangg 3, scored a total net gross of Rs 134.79 crore, opening in 4550 screens, according to Box Office India. While Bharat, that released in June 2019, garnered a total nett gross of Rs 197 crore after releasing in 4650 screens. His films like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai are among the top-grossing Indian films of all time.

His ‘bankable star’ image relies solely on box office numbers. As Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai releases today on pay-per-view and DTH, for the first time in Salman Khan’s career, number of tickets sold by theatres will not be deciding the fate of his film. The actor himself has accepted that the revenue expected from theatres is almost zero. “We may get the lowest numbers with Radhe. It might not even cross 10-15 crores. We would lose money on Radhe and box office collections are going to be almost zero,” he has said.

Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai was planned as a hybrid release – streaming platform alongside a release in theatres wherever they are functional. But with more cinemas shutting temporarily during the second wave, there will be no big opening day number to look forward to.

“Very few theatres around the country, some in Gujarat and UP, are expected to be screening the film. The revenue generated will be negligible. Salman Khan’s films are critic-proof, a negative review has never affected his film. He knows he is an entertainer, and has to do films that appeal to the masses. He never bothered about what critics would say. Since OTT platforms do not reveal their viewership numbers, there is no way to say whether the film is a hit or a flop. After watching the film, one can do a comparative analysis of how much the film could have earned if it had a regular theatrical opening in pre-Covid times,” says trade analyst Atul Mohan.

For a theatrical release of any big star’s film, box office numbers are tracked from the opening day, to the opening weekend, and first week, right until it completes its run in cinema halls. But for Radhe, there will be no such parameter to assess the success of the film.

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “How do you gauge the success of a film that releases on an OTT platform? For box office collections, the numbers are out the very next day of the film’s release. But in case of an OTT release, no platform will tell you their viewership numbers. There might be claims that so-and-so film did very well, but no streaming service will confirm how many people exactly watched a particular film. Those claims are made to build a certain brand value of the star or the film, but you can never be sure.”

Salman Khan, also the producer of Radhe, has struck a multi-crore deal with Zee Studios for a multi-format release. “The film will earn money in the long run, through DTH and satellite channels of ZEE, and repeated viewership on OTT. It will surely attract a good amount of advertising revenue when it’s aired on TV. But the box office decision of a hit or a flop unfathomable at this point, and it’s highly unlikely that theatres will screen the film once they reopen,” Atul adds.

The domestic market, which makes for the lion’s share of a movie’s revenue, cannot be a deciding factor during a pandemic. The film is expected to do well in overseas markets though. “The domestic box office in India won’t generate a sufficient number to talk about. Overseas, specifically the Middle East market, it will be a good number, because it’s a Salman Khan film releasing after a long time. Some decent numbers from US, UK and other regions is also expected. Theatres, apart from the larger-than-life viewing experience, also provide validation to a star. It is much higher than what we get from an OTT release. Everyone involved in a film looks forward to that validation – how did our audience like the film? That is the charm of the theatres,” explains Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst.

OTT platforms have been an amazing leveler, where the only factor that matters is the quality of content. With the box office numbers out of the reckoning, it remains to be seen how the sense of validation is achieved with Radhe, and any subsequent films that might adopt a similar release model.

In almost every frame of Radhe you wonder which age and era the film was made for: - The inevitable good vs evil battle that ends you-know-how; - The humour that makes you cry rather than laugh—‘ Jackie Shroff in strappy little red dress level’ cry; - The regressive attitude towards women; - The regular ol’ world-saviour of a police officer; - The no-rhyme-no-reason song-and-dance routines, the pelvic thrust choreography; - The gratuituous mindless action; —everything reminds you of all the films you want to forget.

Didn’t even bother with a new signature line for Salman Khan.

But hey, the film is short. That’s keeping the changing times in mind. Even if it stereotypes the audience’s attention spans, I’ll take it.

Radhe is a good 45 minutes shorter than such films usually are. That doesn’t mean it is any crisper. It is no secret that films of this genre, especially with Salman Khan at the helm of affairs, are really easy to trash. It’s fun to do too. Especially because the viewer feels entitled to have a laugh at it because they weren’t given the chance to laugh with it. Yes, a paracetamol or four, might prove handy. Even taking them as prevention could be helpful * . Yes, you can pick between resting your brain away from your screen and over-working it with trying to make sense out of incoherent sequence after disconnected sequence. You get the drift.

To be fair, the ruthless villain is a notch more ruthless and is beating the hero silly—and this is a refreshing change. You see, I am hanging by a thread here. And I daresay trying harder than the makers, who didn’t even bother with a new signature line for Salman Khan . Neither could they be bothered with a half-decent attempt at good prosthetics, or the look and feel either. The film is not supposed to be taken seriously, and not to be reviewed seriously for sure.

Thumbs up, Bollywood Life : ...While the script and direction could've done with some fine tuning, Salman Khan's Radhe Your Most Wanted Bhai is still massy and masaledaar enough to offer an entertaining deviation from the usual, dark content on OTT platforms, while also being its own film, retaining no more than the essence and some main plot devices of Korean film The Outlaws. If it had seen a traitidional Eid release in theatres like a Salman movie should, we predict it having taken no less than a Rs. 40 crore nett opening. For now, enjoy this Eidi at home. And that’s the only reason why you’d go to the theatre to watch Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai, right? The superstar has never looked as good, or seemed as indestructible (he survives a helicopter crash and is in short a desi version of Iron Man and Super Man and all the superheroes you can name put together), or grooved as stylishly as he does in the dance numbers, especially Zoom Zoom and Seeti Maar where he manages to make even the most clumsiest step look cool and aspirational. However, the formula is fraying now, and needs to be ripped and tossed aside like that T-shirt which Salman Khan shreds in every film to flaunt the six-pack abs. The actor does a version of his jiggle-the-belt move from Dabangg somewhere along the way in Radhe. He also repeats the line from Wanted that became a rage back in the 2000s: Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, toh apne aap ki bhi nahin sunta (Roughly: Once I make a commitment, even I can’t persuade myself to turn away from it). But…kisi ki toh sunn lo, Bhai. Listen to someone, please. Radhe is a non-starter. It should never have been made.... full review

How much would have Salman Khan’s Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai earned at the box office? Trade gives its verdict

Last year and earlier this year, we came up with three articles wherein we asked trade experts how much the digital films would have earned at the box office had these films released in cinemas. After a tremendous response to each of the three stories, we are now back with a similar exercise.

2 weeks back, the much awaited film, Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai , starring Salman Khan and Disha Patani released on digital in India while enjoying a theatrical release overseas. Bollywood Hungama this time approached the experts and gave them two hypothetical situations – Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai releasing solo at the box office and Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai clashing with Akshay Kumar-starrer Laxmii and asked how the Salman Khan starrer would have fared in both these scenarios. Both Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai and Laxmii were supposed to clash on Eid 2020 had things been normal and there was no pandemic. Ultimately, even Laxmii released online and like Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai , it also received negative reviews.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh says, “Had Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai come solo, it would have got the advantage in the single screens. But looking at the merits of the film, I doubt if it would have sustained after the first week or even after the first weekend. In multiplexes, its performance would have been poor after the initial curiosity because the film is weak.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, meanwhile tells, “If it had come solo in non-pandemic times, I am sure it would have collected around Rs. 175 crore . Salman’s films usually collect Rs. 100 days within 3 days on Eid. And since the content was not upto the mark here, the collections would have fallen but would have still reached the Rs. 175 crore mark.” Trade expert Komal Nahta in agreement says, “If it had come solo, Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai would have done at least Rs. 175 to 200 crores at the cinemas.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan, meanwhile, makes an interesting observation before giving his verdict, “If things were normal, then Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai would have been a far better product. They were supposed to shoot in Thailand for the climax but they couldn’t do so due the lockdown. So they had to compromise a bit. I feel even the continuity jerks were there because of this reason. Bacche toh hai nahi yeh log . They are all experienced. Toh majboori mein yeh ho gaya hoga .”

He then adds, “ Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai would have taken huge opening. This wouldn’t have been the film that had come in cinemas. Isse achchi hi film aati . The mass audiences love action, especially in films starring Salman Khan. Single screen aur mass centres mein toh picture faad deti ! Yeh aaram se Rs. 150 crore kar deti .”

And what would have happened if Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai had clashed with Laxmii ? To which Taran Adarsh replies, “In that case, the business would have got divided. Both the films were poor and the problem with them was that the content didn’t match the stardom of Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan. So I feel there would have been no hope from the theatrical business of both the movies. It would have been a lacklustre Eid from business point of view. The audience today is very smart and the word of mouth spreads faster than a fire.”

Girish Johar opines, “Salman Khan has a little wider appeal pan-India. So Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai would have collected Rs. 125 crore . And Laxmii would have done the business of around Rs. 100 crores .” Atul Mohan replies, “If it had clashed, both the films would have done Rs. 100 crore. There would have been tremendous excitement due to the clash. Everything would have made news, from screen count to censor report to final run time of both films etc.”

Komal Nahta who had predicted Rs. 175-200 crore lifetime for Radhe – Your Most Wanted Bhai had it come solo, says, “It would have done slightly less had it come with Laxmii but still, it would have a been much better box office performance. The ‘Seeti Maar’ song is such a rage. Salman looked so good in the film. Despite the age difference, Salman and Disha Patani made for a lovely pair.”

Radhe: Salman Khan's Bollywood stardom once again pulls maximum crowds, this time to OTT screens

Salman khan's incomparable popularity is often credited to pulling crowds in for a film and clearly, ott is no obstacle for him. here's how radhe: your most wanted bhai performed on the small screen..

Garnering more than 4.2 million views on its first day across platforms, the Salman Khan starrer has proven to be a mega-hit on its first day itself. Having released in the Pay Per View format on Zee5 and Zeeplex. The actor shared the same on Instagram and thanked fans for showering the film with much love. Wishing everyone a happy Eid, the actor wrote, "Thank u all for the wonderful return gift by making Radhe the most watched film on day 1. The film industry would not survive without your love n support. Thank u."

Salman kept his commitment of releasing Radhe on Eid which came as a small token of happiness on the festive day giving the audiences a sense of continuity during these trying times. The Prabhudeva directorial stars Disha Patani opposite Salman Khan, and Randeep Hooda and Jackie Shroff in pivotal roles.

Meanwhile, Radhe also witnessed a theatrical release in over 40 countries. According to the reports in BoxOfficeIndia, Salman Khan's Radhe earned ₹4.39 crore on its opening day. On Friday, trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the box office collection numbers of Radhe. According to his adta, Radhe earned ₹35 lakh and ₹5.9 lakh in Australia and New Zealand, respectively.

'Radhe' Overseas Box Office Collection: Salman Khan's Film Fares Well In International Markets On Opening Day

Salman khan's 'radhe' minted decent numbers on its first day at the international box office..

Mumbai : Salman Khan starrer ‘Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai’, which released in crucial overseas markets on May 13, has received a good response from the audience on the first day. The action drama has managed to rake in decent moolah on its opening day at the box office in major international markets.

Bollywood critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the overseas box office collection of ‘Radhe’ on social media. He revealed that the film collected Rs 35.71 lakh in Australia despite the COVID-19 crisis. Adarsh added the Prabhu Deva directorial started on a flying note in UAE, which is considered one of the most major international markets.

‘Radhe’ trended on social media upon its release on  ZEEPlex . The servers of ZEE5’s platform crashed as many users logged in at the same time to watch the film.   

Although, the film couldn’t release in theatres in India due to the second wave of COVID-19, it grabbed several eyeballs on the OTT platform. The much-awaited film received mixed reviews from the critics and fans on Twitter. The critics expressed their disappointment over the screenplay and loopholes in the storyline.   

Radhe Leaked Online

Ahead of the release of his film, Salman requested his followers to not resort to piracy and watch the film only on  ZEEPlex . His appeal went in vain as the film was leaked online on  Tamilrockers  and Telegram within few hours of release.  

Bollywood  Bhaijaan’s  fans urged the superstar to take  necessary  action after ‘Radhe’ was leaked on different piracy sites.

‘Radhe’, which is inspired by South Korean film ‘The Outlaws’, also stars Disha Patani, Randeep Hooda and Jackie Shroff in key roles. The film was originally slated to hit the silver screens on Eid 2020; however, it got delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis.   The flick is also available for streaming on leading DTH operators.

In contrast, some viewers and critics expressed disappointment, particularly with the first half. Prominent critic Taran Adarsh shared, “The audience reaction, 40 minutes into the film, is DEAD completely let down. Some masses are shouting to stop the movie. Bobby Simha as the CBI officer… scenes are a bit interesting to arrest Kamal Haasan at the airport.”

There is a fine line that separates swooning romance from unintentional comedy. Radhe Shyam is a masterclass in what happens when you cross it. The deliciously silly line I just want flirtationship perfectly encapsulates the many problems with the film. Radhe Shyam ends with Amitabh Bachchans voice over telling us that eventually our actions shape our future, not the lines on our hand. On hearing this, a young man in the audience in the show I was in, groaned and said: Yeh pehle hi bata dete.

The story attempts to drive home a point that no science is absolute and 100 percent accurate; and that theres always a small but bright chance to change your destiny with karma. And this applies to even the worlds best palm-readers. However, in a run-time of about 140 minutes, which also seems tediously long, the core thought doesnt reach its desired mark. Hence, the film fails to create the impact it could have with all the apparatus it had at its disposal, including well-known names in each technical department and a bunch of good artistes.

Overall, Radhe Shyam is a grandly mounted love story that sticks to the genre. But, it fails in generating the magic via the lead pair chemistry, and thats where the whole thing falls apart. It eventually settles as a glossy affair with no soul. The only reason to watch the movie is first and foremost the visuals, and later followed by Prabhas.

Radhe Shyam has a hollow story with a lousy narrative. Despite grand visuals and lavish production design, the film sinks completely. It has galore of boring moments throughout. Radhe shyam is a slow paced Love saga that tests your patience at times. The much needed chemistry between lead pair is not so effective. Movie is visually grand and has some good songs but lacks emotion. It has a forced climax, however the VFX effects are good compared to what we have seen in Indian cinema in the recent past, but that may not help the fate of the movie. Given the genre of this movie, Prabhass current macho image might effect the happenings of the movie in a negative way. Rich Production values and grandeur may bring some class audience to the theaters but overall the movie does not live up to the hype.
