India is well known as an education hub attracting international students from all over the world. India’s robust education system, in the backdrop of its rich diversity and vibrant culture &history, affords a broad range of options for students. And as a rapidly growing country with a leading technological edge, studying in India has much to offer, whether it is Engineering, Computers, Arts, Philosophy, Political Sciences or Classics etc.
Indian Council for Cultural Relations administers various scholarship programs annually and awards about 3000+ scholarships under 21 different schemes to foreign students from about 180 countries. Amongst these 21 schemes, six are funded by ICCR from its grant and others are administered on behalf of MEA and Ministry of Ayush. The courses offered for studies are for Under-graduation, Post-graduation and Ph.D. levels. Each academic year, ICCR has about 6000+ of its foreign scholars who are studying at various Central/State Universities, Institutes, NITs, and Agricultural Institutions etc.
In a step forward towards “Digital India” ICCR developed the “Admissions to Alumni (A2A) Portal) to streamline the enrolment process. The portal was launched on January 17, 2018 by then Honorable External Affairs Minister Late Smt. Sushma Swaraj. With the introduction of the portal from the academic year 2018-19 onwards, ICCR Scholarship programs are not only digitized but also have become an effortless exercise. The portal contains all relevant information regarding ICCR sponsored scholarship schemes and other information like names of the Indian Universities, courses offered by them and guidelines of scholarship schemes etc.

NIT Durgapur: Over the last five years, the NIRF Rankings for the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur have not remained stable. The ranking of the institute dwindled with time. It also failed to secure a rank in the QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education (THE) in 2024.
Established in 1960, NIT Durgapur secured 43rd rank in the last NIRF ranking, a dip of 10 points from the earlier 34 under the engineering colleges category, however, compared to 2020, the technology institute has shown improvement in its ranking.

NIT- Durgapur: NIRF Ranking
Observing the institute under India rankings, it has performed fairly better after 2020. ![phd scholarships 2023 india SDG Summer School](https://law.uct.ac.za/sites/default/files/styles/standard_lg/public/media/images/law_uct_ac_za/sdg_summer_school_.png?h=e309cdcb&itok=kQEFBFju)
We wish to congratulate two IMEL PhD students, Danjelle Midgely and Nadine Nyamangirazi, who have been awarded EU Albatross scholarships to attend a month-long SDG Summer School on Planetary Health at the University of Geneva in July 2024.
The SDG Summer School is inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The theme of the 2024 programme is Planetary Health, with a focus on the impact of climate change on human health. It emphasizes team-based problem-solving and the agile creation of practical prototypes, driven by real-world challenges, presented by experts from international organizations in Geneva.
![phd scholarships 2023 india Danjelle Midgley](https://law.uct.ac.za/sites/default/files/media/images/law_uct_ac_za/danjelle_midgley2_.jpg)
Danjelle Midgley is a first-year PhD student under the supervision of A/Prof. Melanie Murcott. Danjelle's research focuses on climate change litigation strategies in South Africa. Danjelle works as an attorney at the Centre for Environmental Rights in the Activist Support and Training programme. She is excited to attend the course and learn new practical problem-solving skills to add to her legal knowledge to be put to use in her work as an environmental and climate justice lawyer and scholar in South Africa.
![phd scholarships 2023 india Nadine Nyamangiraz](https://law.uct.ac.za/sites/default/files/media/images/law_uct_ac_za/nadine_nyamangirazi_.jpg)
Nadine Nyamangirazi is also a first-year PhD law student under Melanie's supervision. Nadine's research centres on the intersection of international trade and environmental law within the African context. She is confident that the insights gained from the SDG Summer School will not only enrich her academic pursuits but also provide significant professional growth opportunities, empowering her to advance her career and make a meaningful impact in her field. Nadine is particularly drawn to the collaborative nature of the SDG Summer School, which fosters an environment conducive to learning, sharing ideas, and forging meaningful connections. She looks forward to engaging deeply with her peers and mentors, gaining valuable insights, and contributing to innovative solutions during this transformative experience.

PhD Student Luka Hamel-Serenity is a 2024 Environmental Futures Fellow
![phd scholarships 2023 india Luka Hamel-Serenity](https://www.arch.virginia.edu/sites/default/files/2023-12/Luka-Alandra-Hamel-Serenity_0.jpg)
UVA School of Architecture is delighted to announce that Luka Hamel-Serenity , a student in the PhD in the Constructed Environment program, has been named a 2024 Environmental Futures Fellow by UVA's Environmental Institute (EI). This prestigious annual program supports summer interdisciplinary graduate research that advances resilience and sustainability. Hamel-Serenity joins Heather Christensen (Graduate Research Assistant, Environmental Sciences) and Jenny Tran (MPP, Batten School) as the 2024 fellows.
“This year's cohort of Environmental Futures Fellows is, as usual, an impressive group of early-career scholars,” said Karen McGlathery , Director of UVA’s Environmental Institute. “They all bring thoughtful academic rigor and research to finding solutions to some of the world’s most pressing climate challenges.”
Hamel-Serenity's research focuses on the intersection between racial justice, climate resilience, and place attachment in the urban communities of the Chesapeake Bay. Born in Baltimore, and raised near Annapolis, Maryland, he has witnessed firsthand the effects of sea level rise on the Severn River, a tidal tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. According to the EI's recent announcement , Hamel-Serenity will leverage the Environmental Futures Fellowship to further his research into resident perceptions of environmental dynamics in Norfolk, Virginia, a topic central to his dissertation.
"Norfolk is a highly developed city, with more than 90% of the landmass being urbanized or owned by the military. How do people relate to nature in an environment so densely inhabited by humans?" Hamel-Serenity asks. "Marginal natural areas remain in Norfolk, which are lush, green, riparian, or marshy, but these may be hidden behind neighborhoods, large thoroughfares, or even other outdoor spaces like Northside Park."
![phd scholarships 2023 india Mason Creek, Norfolk, Virginia](https://www.arch.virginia.edu/sites/default/files/styles/wysiwyg_content_image/public/2024-06/Mason%20Creek_Luka%20Hamel%20Serenity.jpg?itok=7qSSaFDd)
He continues, "Having lived in Norfolk for my dissertation research since July 2023, I can ask in the first person plural: do we, as city-dwellers, still believe in nature? How do climate change, industry, and urbanization affect our vision for Norfolk's future nature? And finally, if we lose this nature, what social, cultural, spiritual, and climatic stirrings will we have lost?"
Hamel-Serenity expresses his enthusiasm for the fellowship: "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to explore these questions in a deeper way through interviews and content analysis of historical maps, in order to share the story of Norfolk's climate resilience and environmental future, as told by ten of the city's residents. Addressing these questions here in the Virginia Tidewater, which is a testing ground for climate adaptation and coastal resilience, may have implications for environmental resilience in other cities of the Mid-Atlantic and for urban waterfronts around the United States."
The School and the PhD in the Constructed Environment program congratulates Luka Hamel-Serenity on this exciting research opportunity!
