They are the coolest people one will ever meet since they are updated with all knowledge about computers, technology, the internet, and other related topics.

They are the sort of individuals with whom you can discuss anything, even sensitive or confidential matters. In addition to being a buddy, my grandfather is also the finest teacher I have ever had. He has taught me all I know today. He made learning enjoyable for me and never gets upset with me when I mess up. He played a part in helping me realise my goals.

They serve as my role model and have always supported me in all aspects of my life. They give their insights that can direct me toward living a good life. I don't have to worry about anything because they are helping me make decisions. My grandparents are 70 and 73 years old, respectively. They still appear to be young in heart and do not appear to be as elderly as other persons their age. They read books, newspapers, and magazines frequently, which contributes to their strong general knowledge.

Why I Love Them

I feel really fortunate to have such kind, endearing, and special grandparents. Every day I learn a lot of new things. They serve as my inspirations. Therefore, they are older now, they still serve as the foundation of our family. I respect my grandparents because they instilled moral principles and ideals that have aided me in everyday life. They both take great care of their physical and mental well-being. They constantly practise yoga and meditation to stay active at their age. They have always cared about my health and urged me to live a healthy lifestyle.

My grandparents' personalities are fascinating. They were always an important role model for me. Throughout the day, they are energetic and active constantly. Everyone in our family adores them. They have a limitless affection for us. They frequently interact with others with a lot of love and caring.

He returns and settles down to read one of his favourite books on the lawn. My grandparents share their tales with me. I can never feel down when they are around. My grandparents were the ones who first instilled in me the value of comedy. They both significantly contributed to my character development, and I am grateful to have them in my life.

I seemed to have great luck growing up at my grandparents' home. Since I was a child, our family has lived with my grandparents. I only have a few recollections of my paternal grandpa because he went away when I was a very little child. He used to clean his teeth twice a day without fail. I developed this practice and have continued to do so ever since.

My real support systems have been my maternal grandparents. I am privileged to have been raised by such wonderful people. My grandpa constantly emphasised the value of education because he was a college principal. When my parents were away, he helped us with my homework.

Similarly, my grandparents greeted me with open arms every time me and family visited them. Every holiday, they used to wait for us to come. We loved the delicious dinners and pickles that my grandma cooked. She also taught me several recipes and helpful advice that I still use today. I appreciate my grandparents for teaching moral principles to both my parents and me and for providing a secure environment for us to grow up in.

I learned the fundamental principles of life from my grandparents. They have taught me the true meaning of goodness, love, and affection. They boosted my willpower and helped me become a better person. They are incredibly dear to me. And he has improved our life in so many different ways. I appreciate having them near me.

I Love My Grandparents

I never needed to form friends because my grandparents were my best friends. Thus I never felt the urge to do so. They protected me from my parents whenever I did something wrong. Together, we played many indoor and outdoor activities like cricket, Ludo, and hide and seek.

My granddad and I ride bikes around the neighbourhood and to the park. When I'm bored, he is always willing to play with me. He sings songs and gives me general advice. My grandmother is a positive person. She always smiles and is ready to make what I desire. I enjoy making jokes with them and getting pampered by them. My grandmother taught me how to behave appropriately and looked after me when I was ill. My grandfather buys all the foodstuffs I like.

Essay on Grand Parents

Grandparents are like an angel in disguise who is irreplaceable. They always pamper us endlessly. Their love nurtures us to grow into a beautiful human being. There is even a ‘The National Grandparents Day’ which is founded by Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade. The first Grandparents Day was followed on September 13, 1961. Grandparents are like the heritage and very important family members as they stand on the top of the family tree.

If you want to write an essay on grandparents, we at Vedantu are here to help you out. The essay given in the following can be considered as an amazing sample. You can refer to it and write an essay about your grandparents on your own. All our study materials are of high quality. These will help you to score well in the exam.

Grandparents not only help their kids and grandkids in their learning and growth but also foster good habits and moral values amongst them. They are the vitamins for the child’s development. Many are not aware of the fact that Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade are the founders of ‘The National Grandparents Day’. During a conference in the white house, Jacob was focusing on the importance of grandparents in society and he subsequently held the first Grandparents Day on 13th September- Sunday in 1961.

The Latin word ‘Pater’ and ‘Mater’ meaning ‘father’ and ‘mother’ respectively help us conclude the definition of the terms ‘Paternal grandparents’ as father’s parents while ‘Maternal grandparents’ as mother’s parents. At the moment, Grandparents are the oldest ones in our families. They held irreplaceable places in our hearts. Grandparents have inner as well as outer beauty. Being well in physical and mental health is a must-learn lesson from them. Grandparents are heritage and essential members in our families as they stand on the top of the family tree. They bridge the generation gap by narrating the interesting stories of the old generations. They are frequently known as caretakers of the family. Purest forms of culture and tradition are worth learning from them as they play the best role in history sharer. Grandparents are the god of the justice of the family. They believe equality amongst all similar to the way the statue of justice symbolized everyone is equal. They extraordinarily handle the judging part in solving the disputes in the family. Their conclusions don't hear both the parties. Moreover, aren’t they counselors, because they have a way of escape in every Labyrinth. They made the exact scenario of the country before independence stand in front of our eyes while evoking the truth. The importance of the grandparents in lives is significant as they play the teacher to doctor’s role in the growth of individuals.

The words of Richard Garnett touch the heart, he said, “Love is the great gift that one generation can leave for the other.” Love and grandchild from grandparents will never cease as they are the apple of not only a parent's eye but also grandparent’s eyes. They are not usually caught with loads of work resulting in having sufficient time for listening, observing and correcting small things of the child than that of busy parents. No one will disagree with the emotions that they are the heart of the family. Support and care are the two duties of us in the concluding phase of their life. The importance of grandparents is vanishing as the global world is developing with time. If you are lucky enough that you have grandparents still alive, cherish them as many times as you can and give them all they deserve. Life is so much easier when their love is around us. Each word spoken by them touches the heart through ears. There are countless research studies which focus on the benefits extracted from the strong bond between grandparents and the child.

No one loves kids more than their grandparents! Grandparents pamper and shower affection all the time. And, they are the ones who teach good values to their grandkids, guiding them to become good people. Therefore, it is no wonder that every kid their grandparents are special. Whether maternal or paternal, grandparents symbolise kids’ love, fun, guidance, and happiness. For kids and the whole family, grandparents are the guiding lights that steer them in the right direction. So, writing an essay on grandparents is exciting for kids.

Though my grandparents’ essay is an exciting essay topic for kids, young kids may still find it a bit difficult to write. To help them write a perfect my grandparents’ essay, we have here a few pointers. Here are some key points to remember when writing an essay on grandparents for lower primary classes kids:

  • Write points related to the essay topic.
  • Add a personal touch to the essay by writing about personal feelings.
  • Write about the importance of grandparents in your life.
  • You can add brief information about grandparents’ day.
  • Remember to structure your essay coherently with an introduction, middle and conclusion.

Writing about a subject in sentences is easier than writing an essay for class 1 and 2 students. Therefore, to make them interested in writing, ask them to write sentences and proceed with the essay. Breaking down a topic in sentences also helps them express their views; later, they can convert the sentences into paragraphs.

Here are ten lines on grandparents for kids for them to take inspiration from:

  • Grandparents are the best blessing every kid can have.
  • My grandparents are always there and love me a lot.
  • They play with me, teach me and also help me learn other creative things.
  • Sometimes, my grandparents cook for me and take me out to the park when my parents are busy.
  • At night, my grandparents help me brush and read bedtime stories.
  • Not only me but my grandparents also love to play with my friends and read stories with us.
  • On weekends, with my parents and grandparents, I go to picnics and have a lot of fun.
  • My grandparents are the ones who get most worried when I am hurt or sick.
  • They inspire me to become a good person and teach me to help others.
  •  I am lucky to have such loving and caring grandparents.

Writing a short paragraph suits young kids. A short paragraph with fewer sentences doesn’t overwhelm them; they can quickly note it. Once they can write short paragraphs on various subjects, they can comfortably write longer essays.

Here is a paragraph on grandparents for young kids:

The Grand in grandparents mean more. So, everything is more to grandparents, including more love, care, guidance and fun. My love and affection for my grandparents is different. Grandparents are frequently saviours and protectors for their grandkids. In today’s world of nuclear families, grandparents are not part of the daily lives of grandkids. Still, for grandkids like me, grandparents are precious. I wait to be with them and look forward to their visits. My grandparents, too, are an important part of my life. I enjoy visiting them and treasure the times spent with them.

My Grandparents Essay For Kids - 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay

Grandparents are idols for every kid. Therefore, kids of all ages enjoy expressing themselves. However, young kids may find it hard to write essays on grandparents. Here is a short essay on Grandparents in English for kids for reference:

My grandparents are the most precious people in my life. They assist me in everything from studies to drawing to solving arguments with my friends. They always look after me and care for me. My grandparents are the ones who are the most worried about my well-being and safety. Whenever I am upset or sad, my grandma is the one who cares for me and cheers me up. Her loving hug is enough to ward off all my troubles. She softly strokes my hair while she reads me goodnight stories. My grandma bakes delicious cakes, which are my favourite delicacy. My granddad assists me in doing my school assignments. Every weekend, he takes me to the park. I enjoy seeing him feed the local cats and dogs on the street. They’re my grandfather’s closest companions. Every evening, my grandfather also teaches me how to play chess. I love spending time with my grandparents. They are the ones who always help me and guide me to do the right thing.

As kids progress in their academics, they must write longer essays. Students of higher classes are capable of expressing their views in words better. Hence, they can write long essays on grandparents.

Here is a long essay for class 3 students on grandparents:

Grandparents are the best gifts of life. They are always keeping an eye on their children and grandchildren. But in modern days, most people are losing touch with their traditions as the times change. Nuclear families have changed the dynamics of family values. However, this has also made people realise the importance of grandparents. Grandparents are the pillar that supports the whole family and takes care of their kids and kids of their kids. They bind the entire family with their love and care.

Ask any kid who loves and spoils them the most. And the answer will be the same- grandparents. The love of grandparents is reciprocated equally by grandkids. Their grandparents are the most precious, and they love them the most. Grandparents adore and lavish their grandkids with love, attention, and gifts. But they are also the first people to correct the kids when they make a mistake. With love, they guide grandkids in their lives and teach them the correct values and morals to make them better humans.

In all our lives, grandparents are indeed a blessing. They are the ones who have shaped our parents’ personalities. Our parents love and care for us the way our grandparents did when they were children because of their upbringing. Grandparents are also a source of support. Even though our parents may not support us in a few things, they are often the only people who do everything. Most significantly, grandparents have complete faith in our abilities. They are the ones that encourage us to follow our aspirations in the face of adversity. Even though some of our dreams seem incomprehensible to them, they continue to believe in us. They increase our self-esteem and enable us to perform better. Grandparents are also one of the key reasons we feel secure and protected. We know that our grandparents constantly pray for us, even if we don’t live with them.

They’re on the lookout for us. The house of their grandparents is almost everyone’s heaven. We feel at ease knowing we can always go to our grandparents’ house if needed. They assist us in various ways. Therefore, it’s no surprise that we cannot imagine our lives without our grandparents. We know our grandparents are wonderful gifts that not everyone is fortunate enough to get.

The Key to Writing a Great Essay About a Grandparent

Ivy Divider

When you finally turn off your throwback binge of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and begin the brainstorming stage of the process, make sure to do these things to write an effective essay about your grandmama or papa:

Your essay should first and foremost be about you.

Make sure your grandma doesn’t take over your college essay. An anecdote about an experience or conversation you had with a grandparent can be a great way to illustrate something about your background or values, but your essay should always feature you as the main character. If you need help coming up with a specific story, go mining for mementos like photos and birthday cards. Or better yet, have a conversation if you can! Whether it’s a phone call, an afterschool visit, or a letter of everything you would want to say to a grandparent who has passed away, speaking directly to that person will help you uncover cherished memories that you both participated in. The more specific and detailed your story, the easier it will be to tell it from your perspective. After all, your granny doesn’t need to get accepted to college – and she is probably too old for ramen dinners night after night anyway.

Write about their impact on you…

Once you have homed in on a memory or experience, think about what you learned from it. What does it say about you? Does/did knowing your grandparent make you more understanding? Kind? Curious? Empathetic? What kind of attributes does grandma bring out in you and how does she do that? Maybe your grandmother is known for her elaborate Thanksgiving dinners, and over time, you have become her sous chef. What did this experience teach you about discipline and organization? About secret ingredients and family tradition? About what it really means to be a homemaker? Or perhaps you have been the teacher: showing your Meemaw and Pawpaw how to play Words With Friends so you can feel connected from afar. Whatever the story, remember that it should lead to a bigger lesson about who you are or who you have become as a result of knowing your amazing grandparents.

…and then prove it

Finally, you have to show, not tell. Remember that conversation we mentioned earlier? Here’s where your notes, photos, and scrapbooks will come in handy. Concrete details and bits of dialogue are the final key ingredient to any college essay — but especially the kind built around a relationship. Don’t just say that your grandparent makes you more adventurous – tell admissions about the time you risked all of your team’s points in Jeopardy because you were confident in your answer and remembered your grandpa telling you that you have to take great risks to see great rewards. Show admissions how you’ve applied what your grandparent taught you to your everyday life.

If your essay reads as a eulogy to your grandparent, think about how you can turn the essay around. One way to do this would be to try to only include your grandparent in the first and last paragraph of your essay: introduce your relationship and its’ impact, tell your own story, and bring that story full circle back to your grandparent. This, of course, isn’t the only way to structure your essay .

Any way you write it, we wish you luck, and if you’re looking for the best prompt to match your essay to – check out our guide !

Essay on Grandparents for Students in English [Easy Words*]

January 19, 2021 by Sandeep

Essay on Grandparents: The most loving, caring and benevolent human beings are our grandparents. They teach good behaviour to their grandchildren and beautiful ways to lead a successful and respectable life. They share their life experiences and inspire us with their struggles and positivity. They hold our hands throughout without much expectation from us. We should always offer love, care and shower them with kindness. They motivate us to maintain good health and physical fitness.

Essay on Grandparents 500 Words in English

Below we have provided My Grandparents Essay in English, suitable for class 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10 school students.

Our grandparents are the greatest gift to us by God. Their care and affection serve to be the root that holds our family together. Our childhood days, spent with our grandparents, feel blissful. The grandparent and grandchildren bond is truly fascinating. It keeps both of our innocence alive. Thus, we must treasure it.

My Grandparents

They say people who have their grandparents are the luckiest. I agree with this statement. My grandparents are my best friends, and I love them. They are both fun-loving creatures. Their knowledge has no bounds. Whenever I fall, they are present to pick me up. Sadly, we live in different places. However, I make sure I meet them every weekend.

My Grandfather

Though my grandfather is 70 years old, he is still young at heart. He retired as an army officer. He has a great personality, and he has an even greater sense of humour. He has an excellent fitness routine. Whenever we go out for a picnic, he makes sure we get to spend quality time in sports activities.

We both love to prank everyone else. Often I find him solving Sudoku puzzles in the weekly magazines. Apart from that, he loves to read. And he makes sure to hand me a book whenever we meet. I wonder how he always stays cheerful. His actions inspire me to have bigger dreams.

My Grandmother

Out of all, the lovely ladies in our family, my grandmother is the best. She is 65 years old, yet she looks so young. She has always been a remarkable teacher-both, personally and professionally. To her, life neither started nor ended in books. It feels amazing to spend time with her.

My grandmother is such a great cook. We always sneak into the kitchen and experiment with new recipes. Her tricks and tips never fail. Besides that, we love watching movies together. She is always kind to everyone. Her thoughtfulness moves me. She always guides me towards making the right decision.

Importance of Grandparents in Our Life

The role of grandparents in each individual’s life is nothing short of vital.  The growing stage of a child is critical. It is when he/she learns about the essence of life. Often in this hectic world, parents cannot spend quality time with their children. However, children begin to learn the morals and core values of life in their grandparents’ presence.

Interaction with your grandparents allows you to explore the world. You get to peek through their lives from a closer perspective. You inculcate sharing and caring habits when you are close to your grandparents. Your parents might scold you, but your grandparents will never do that. They are your biggest supporters throughout life.

My Grandparents Essay for Children and Students

December 2, 2017 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

Human ages during his lifetime. His connections also change during this time. From a son he becomes a father and finally a grandfather. This process of ageing is very interesting and also teaches us many things in the long run.

Thus old age is sometimes called second childhood. It is the time when a person reaches the age of sixty and beyond that. Hair starts whitening and muscles shrink but the brain gets richer and richer. They are the most powerful and influential people in the household. They have seen the world and lived through it.

They have earned respect. That is the reason why all the members of the family respect them so much. What we are now is because of them.

To a child his/ her grandparents form a whole new world, a whole new space. A child finds that comfort in his grandparents that he does not get in his parents. Bedtime stories care, free sweets, warm woolens knitted at home are the few things every granny and granddad gifts their grandchildren.

I have very sweet memories of my grandparents. He was a second guardian to me. They were the people I ran to whenever i had a thought traumatizing me. And whenever I did so they were always there to take me in, in their warm cozy hug and save me from all dangers and fear.

There were times when my grandparents used to save me from getting scolding from my parents as well. My grandparents do not look as older as other people of the same age. My grandmother is sixty five and my grandfather is seventy years of age. The reason behind their youthful face is that still they try out new means and methods to keep themselves fit. Yes, they are very diet conscious.

my grandparents essay

This continues till 10 a.m. there is an unspoken rule at this time that nobody should disturb him till this time unless it’s very urgent or hell gets a snubbing.

My grandmother on the other hand follows an entirely different routine on the whole. She keeps up till late night with her knitting work. She has this hobby which has now reached a level of frenzy after she won a competition on knitting.

She used to make woolens, mufflers, gloves, tablecloths, caps socks just anything you can probably name of by hand by knitting. Recently she took part in a competition and this show cased her versatile talent. After winning it she has taken up this hobby more seriously and she is working with double determination and double hard work day and night.

So after staying up late night she sleeps and gets up later than grand dad…something like 9 am in the morning. Freshens herself and sits with the knitting items where she left off last night. Sometimes if she is bored of knitting she switches on the television or goes to the terrace for a short morning walk. But grandmother has the habit of storing pickles in glass jars and putting them out in the terrace for drying.

That place was a heaven for me. She made pickles of all sorts, mango, chilly, dates, tamarind and many more. I was my grandmother’s ‘dish tasteter’ and she was my personal ‘chef’.  Granny had a fetish to watch different cooking channels, note down the recipes and make them later on. And who used to taste her dishes and judge whether it’s good or bad? No one else, other than me.

grandparents essay

On the other hand the time i spent with my grandfather was a bit different. He taught me many things. He used to tell me stories of armies (my grandfather is an ex army personnel), battles, fights, different countries and all that. We talked about religions, mythological beliefs, gods, mysteries. I transcended into a whole new and different world whenever he told me his stories.

Not only this, I and my grandfather spent hours gardening. I used to see how he dug up the ground to make a bed, how he sowed the seeds and how he watered them. It was such a beauty to watch the plants that grew up within a few days. He encouraged me in sports as well. It was him who bought me my first bicycle and taught me to ride. I am thankful to him for that.

My grandparents made my childhood complete. They are the ones who filled colours in it, gave me basic knowledge and important teachings of life. I simply can’t imagine where I would have been if they hadnt been there.

Nowadays we have seen cases where the old people get treated very badly, by their own family members and sometimes by their own children.

This is such a tragic incident. Some people even leave their old mother and father in old age homes to avoid all responsibilities. The old parents spend their last few remaining days in the  four walls of the old age home….always looking towards the door, waiting for their beloved child to show up and take them back home.

But who will take them back home when their beloved child whom they have nurtured with so much love, time, effort and money has usurped all their property and left them on street? People actually usurp their parents’ property and leave then\m on streets.

How can someone do such treatment with someone who has given birth to them? It is rightly said, human race has lost its humanity.

A Day at My Grandparents' House

Early in my childhood, when I was about four years old, I loved to go to my grandparents’ house. There was always something fun to do: coloring, watching movies with my grandma, or searching through the junk drawer for an interesting item to play with. Now, as my grandfather is dying of cancer, I think back to the time I spent with him and my grandmother and how that time has changed my life. When I was about four years old, my mom would take me to my grandparents’ house almost every day while she took care of my one year old sister. I loved going to my grandparents’ house; there was always a snack waiting for me on the kitchen table, and the aromatic scent of that night’s dinner hung pleasantly in the air. I would walk in the door and give my grandma a huge hug, telling her how excited I was to be with her. She would lead me into the kitchen where my snack was sitting on the table. We would talk about the new Mr. Rodgers episode while I ate, and when I finished we would play Candy Land or I would say hello to my grandpa, who worked from home in the office/ bedroom. My grandpa would let me play Solitaire on his computer, always giving me hints when I missed a good move. One of my favorite things to do at my grandparents’ house was to search through the junk drawer and find the little round tin which held a tiny hammer and some nails. My grandpa would give me a board and I would hammer nails into it, pretending I was a carpenter. Another of my favorite pastimes was taking a large ball of string and designing elaborate trip-wires throughout the house. My grandma would always laugh as she stepped over my trip-wires and say that the house would always be safe from burglars. Both my grandma and grandpa had a great sense of humor and would always make me laugh by telling a joke or a funny story. Although I am older now and don’t spend much time with them anymore, the time I spent with my grandparents as a young child instilled in me the knowledge that I am always loved. They also taught me that hard work, inventiveness, and perseverance are qualities that make one stand out in a crowd. I love my grandparents, and I am very thankful to them for their influence on my life.

Julia Pugachevsky, a senior health reporter for Insider, revealed the pros and cons of taking Cellucor C4 pre-workout powder after reaching a plateau in strength training.

It was the lift she needed — or so she thought.

Julia Pugachevsky, a senior health reporter for Insider , revealed that she started taking Cellucor C4 pre-workout powder after reaching a plateau in strength training.

At first, she wrote in a Friday essay for Insider , she “felt ‘Popeye’-level strength, opting for 5lb-heavier dumbbells without hesitation. Even my instructors gave me more compliments on my form.”

But within a few months, she lost sleep, noticed an itchiness “akin to bees buzzing under my skin,” and grew “entirely dependent” on the scoop of the fruit-punch-flavored supplement.

Now, Pugachevsky is warning others about this “quick fix,” which she has tried to replace by consuming more protein , getting more sleep , and logging additional rest days.

The pre-workout supplements market, which includes powders, capsules/tablets, and ready-to-drink mixtures, is expected to reach $23.77 billion by 2027, up from $13.98 billion in 2020.

The pre-workout supplements market, which includes powders, capsules/tablets, and ready-to-drink mixtures, is expected to reach $23.7 billion by 2027 , up from $13.9 billion in 2020.

Ingredients typically include beta-alanine, caffeine , citrulline, tyrosine, taurine , and/or creatine.

Pugachevsky’s pre-workout powder, which sparked “cartoonishly drastic” results, contains beta-alanine, creatine, caffeine, and citrulline, among other ingredients, according to its label.

Healthline reports that beta-alanine helps prevent lactic acid buildup in muscle tissue that can cause fatigue, pain, and soreness; creatine may enhance energy and muscle strength; caffeine can boost alertness and concentration; and citrulline may increase endurance and lower blood pressure.

The outlet notes that dietary supplements are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as food, not drugs, which may lead to false marketing.

"Taking pre-workout every time you exercise can get you in the habit of not listening to your body," she wrote for Insider.

Pugachevsky said she was aware that beta-alanine can temporarily cause tingling or itching of the skin known as paresthesia, which is why she initially started with half a scoop before her strength training class before eventually doubling the amount.

She said she felt the itchiness when she increased the dosage. The Post reached out to the makers of Cellucor for comment.

“Taking pre-workout every time you exercise can get you in the habit of not listening to your body,” she wrote for Insider.

“It can mask natural tiredness, leading you to potentially injure yourself,” she continued. “Too much caffeine can also cause heart issues, such as changes in your heart rate or shakiness.”

Pugachevsky is not alone in questioning the value of workout supplements .

Rob Hobson, a UK registered sports dietitian and co-author of “The Detox Kitchen Bible,” recently told The Daily Mail that few supplements have been shown to offer real benefits .

“Relying on supplements to help manage your body weight or percentage of body fat will teach you nothing about the importance of diet, exercise and lifestyle and how you can manipulate these factors to help you achieve more sustainable performance goals,” Hobson said.

All About Emily Ratajkowski’s Parents, Kathleen Balgley and John Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski’s parents encouraged her creative pursuits

John Ratajkowski/Instagram

Emily Ratajkowski is most famous for her modeling career, but her reputation for being an art lover (and maker) comes from her parents, who have been professional artists her entire life.

The model, author, entrepreneur, podcast host and actress was born in London on June 7, 1991, to American parents Kathleen Balgley and John Ratajkowski. The pair raised Emily in Encinitas, a California beach city.

Emily’s parents welcomed her — an only child — into their adult world of art and language from a young age. “We had a very atypical family structure. You both had your lives, and I kind of came into that. I like that neither of you ever stopped,” she recalled in a conversation with her father for Cultured .

Emily expressed her affection for her parents in a 2012 Instagram post , captioning the family photo, “Loves of my life.” Now, Emily is experiencing that love even more as her parents take on the role of grandparents to her son, Sylvester “Sly” Apollo , who she shares with ex-husband Sebastian Bear-McClard .

From her mother’s lessons regarding beauty to her father influencing an Oscar winner’s career, here’s everything to know about Emily Ratajkowski’s parents, Kathleen Balgley and John Ratajkowski.

Her mother is a writer and English professor

According to Kathleen’s personal website , she is a writer and English professor who holds a Ph.D in literature from the University of California, San Diego. In 2022, she wrote a memoir titled Letters to My Father: Excavating a Jewish Identity in Poland and Belarus .

Throughout her academic career, the writer and professor has been a lecturer at UCLA Writing Programs, an associate director of writing at UCSD’s Sixth College and a tenured associate professor of English at California State University, San Luis Obispo.

Like her daughter, Kathleen was an avid reader from an early age. Combined with writing and a childhood spent frequently moving around the United States, her love of reading helped her to develop a habit of “noticing and remembering,” she explained on her website.

Among many career accomplishments, Kathleen names the experience of mothering Emily as “the most life-changing, and in the best of ways.” One of her upcoming books is set to be a collaboration with her husband’s drawings of the people and places of Bantry, County Cork, Ireland, where the couple have owned a home since 1984.

Her father is an artist and former high school art teacher

Emily Ratajkowski/Instagram

John is an accomplished visual artist and former high school art teacher. For 40 years, John taught art in San Diego, having even instructed his daughter at San Dieguito Academy, where his students called him “Rata.”

According to his personal website , the artist was raised in Coronado across the bay from San Diego. Intrigued by a variety of art materials throughout his childhood, John recalls working across drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and lithography from a young age. He cites painting as his “true love.”

The multidisciplinary artist received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which he used to render large black-and-white portraits of Alzheimer’s patients. His abstract work took him to Ireland for a two-year sabbatical to pursue non-figurative landscapes. This project resulted in two major exhibitions in Dublin.

Over the past three decades, John has restored two old homes, one in Sant Joan, Mallorca, and the other in Bantry.

They spent Emily’s childhood summers in Saint Joan, Mallorca

In a 2022 post on Instagram , Emily wrote: “Today I brought my beautiful baby back to Sant Juan [sic], the town where I spent every summer of my childhood.”

Emily recalls having spent each summer until the age of 14 in Mallorca, where her parents restored a home.

Emily’s parents impacted her views on beauty

In her 2021 New York Times best-selling collection of essays, My Body , Emily wrote about praying to be beautiful. Regarding her parents, she penned that “it seemed important to them both, especially to my mother, that their daughter be perceived as beautiful.”

In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show , Emily spoke about her mother’s relationship to beauty and the subliminal messages she passed onto her daughter, implying that beauty was where women derived their power — a sentiment Emily challenges in her book.

“I think that my mom learned that being beautiful could secure her safety in her relationships and day-to-day interactions. Understanding where she fell in this ranking system was vital to her survival in some ways,” the model told Elle . “There’s no winning or losing. But it’s something that I think all young women have to unlearn, or maybe just women in general.”

John raised Emily around art

Ahead of an interview between Emily and her father for Cultured , the magazine reported that Emily grew up spending hours on the floor of her father’s studio while he worked on paintings and sculptures.

Now immersed in the worlds of fashion, literature and entertainment in New York City, the entrepreneur has become an artist herself, making collages. She developed this skill from being a student in her father’s art class, according to Cultured .

In her adult life, Emily has developed a love for visual art , too, producing and selling an NFT with Christie’s .

Emily’s mother has had cancer

As reported by The Southern Star in 2022, Kathleen was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018. At the time, she was advised that there was no cure for this cancer, which affects white blood cells made in bone marrow. However, Kathleen is now in remission, according to The Star .

In an Instagram post at the end of 2019, Emily spoke publicly about her mother’s diagnosis. “2019 was one of the hardest years of my life. My mom was really sick, I was battling a serious depression and everything felt very uncertain,” she wrote in the photo’s caption.

John and Kathleen are grandparents to Emily’s son

On March 8, 2021, Emily gave birth to her son, Sylvester Apollo, who she often refers to as “Sly.”

John has posted several photos with his grandson on social media, including one of Sylvester in his art studio.

Oscar-winning Producer Jonathan Wang said John Ratajkowski was “the reason he became an artist”

In 2023, Everything Everywhere All at Once took home seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. One of the people who went home with a trophy that night was film producer Jonathan Wang.

In conversation with her father for Cultured , Emily recalled chatting with Wang at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party that year: “I was just at the Academy Awards, and I saw one of your former students, Jonathan Wang, right after he got his Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once. ” She continued, ”He told me you were the reason he became an artist.”

To that, Emily’s father replied: “The first day I met that kid, I thought, he’s gonna be just fine. If you take somebody who knows who they are and put them out in the world, they’ll do great things.”

I was happy in the UK and dead against moving to New York. When my partner was made redundant, it felt like our only option.

  • Hannah Crown, a British mom, had just found her dream home in England when her husband lost his job.
  • Leaving London for New York City felt like the only option.
  • Renting an apartment as a foreigner was difficult, but for now, her family is happily settled.

Insider Today

Two years ago, my partner and I were still living in a one-and-a-half-bedroom basement in London . The lack of space left guests having to tiptoe between a cot and a piano to find a bed in an underground coal hole. Our son, then aged one, had been born after several years of IVF. After having spent so long in the dark, we were all ready to move somewhere bright, clean, and green.

Finding the new house felt like turning over a new page. It was a former inn with a magnolia tree set in a paved courtyard. After the viewing, we stomped about in the woods while I dared to entertain thoughts of decorating a proper nursery with windows. We could even host our first multi-generational Christmas, something which had been impossible up until now. The new place would take all our resources, but we were hooked.

But this was 2022, and the economy was hitting the skids. Several months after our offer had been accepted, my partner was made redundant. His boss told him about a job opportunity across the pond.

"We can't move to New York . We can't do it to the grandparents — and we've just found our dream house," I told him. But for him, the writing was already on the wall. We held on until our mortgage deal expired and then reluctantly let the house go.

Leaving London for New York felt like the only option

After that, I had to admit, grudgingly, that going to New York seemed like the best option. I had been at my job in a magazine for nearly 10 years and was ready for a change. We wanted to create something new with a big move, so why not just go a bit further west than we'd intended?

I'd never been Stateside, so we took a reconnaissance trip, mixing opera and jazz with checking out neighborhoods and nurseries. When we got back, there was no longer any decision to make.

We had a busy summer getting visas, renovating, and finally renting out our flat in London. I resigned from my job . We said goodbyes to the grandparents, with plans to visit soon.

Related stories

Despite being on a plane with an excitable two-year-old — it was his first transatlantic flight — I felt calmer than I had for the first time in months.

Settling in New York was complicated

When you move to the US from abroad, you typically have no recognized credit history , which makes it difficult to find an apartment without paying thousands for a third-party guarantor — and this is on top of thousands for a real-estate agent's commission.

We tried Craigslist. "Peter" had an amazing array of affordable apartments in New Jersey, but I don't think, after being asked for cash to secure a viewing, any of them were actually his.

We eventually moved into a furnished brownstone in Brooklyn with a backyard. With its fireplaces and wooden floors, it was strangely similar to our old flat in London — and no one asked us for a guarantor. We signed a one-year lease.

I set about exploring our new neighborhood, finding a nice nursery school , and trying to get work done during my son's naps. Trying to buy decent fresh bread for under $10 a loaf became a new challenge.

We'd done some research but didn't think hard enough about the cost of living over here. While inflation has fallen, grocery prices have remained high — the recommended monthly food budget for a family of four in the US has risen 27% since 2020, according to the USDA . Then I lost some work I'd lined up before we came due to freelance budgets being cut.

After six months in the city, I understand the appeal

On the upside, one thing the Big Apple does really well is fun. By the time Christmas arrived, we were ready for some: Santa at Macy's, the Rockettes at Radio City, a Christmas fairyland at Dyker Heights, free boat trips. We've taken the metro up the Hudson and a train to Long Island. With an IDNYC card we have been able to visit big museums and zoos for free.

I've found that when you know what to look for in this crazy place, you can find amazing opportunities. I miss my a cappella group in London, but I've joined an exciting competitive barbershop chorus, a highlight of which involves singing nerdily in a pub. The rest of the family is also doing well: my son loves his nursery, and my partner is enjoying his first experience working abroad. Slowly, it feels like things are opening up for all of us.

This experience has jolted us out of a lot of comfort zones. Despite London having crime levels that surpass New York, homelessness is something I've encountered a lot more in my current day-to-day life. The poverty in New York City is reported to have increased in recent years, bringing the total number of New Yorkers living in poverty to 2 million, according to a report from Robin Hood , an anti-poverty philanthropy.

Yes, it can be uncomfortable. It's also funny, exciting, exhausting, and stimulating in equal measure. I'm grateful for how lucky my family is to be going on this adventure at this time in our lives.

I've suggested to my partner that we stay until at least Christmas, as it feels like we've just got our keys to the city. At some point next year, we will go back to the UK and settle down, but in the meantime, I have gained both a (secondhand) breadmaker and the gift of perspective.

An Octopus Took My Camera, and the Images Changed the Way I See the World

A colorful illustrated collage of animals, sea creatures and a person, intertwined.

By Craig Foster

Mr. Foster’s film, “My Octopus Teacher,” won the Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2021. He wrote from Simon’s Town, South Africa.

I was gifted with a new way of seeing the day I got mugged underwater. I had been filming creatures living in the Great African Sea Forest off the coast of South Africa about a year ago when my camera was grabbed straight out of my hands by a young octopus thief. Wrapping her arms around her bounty, she zoomed backward across the ocean floor.

This was not the first time I’d found myself at the mercy of an eight-armed robber. A couple of years earlier, another curious octopus stole the wedding ring off my wife’s finger, never to be recovered. Octopuses love novel shiny things. Peering into their dens, I’ve found earrings, bracelets, spark plugs, sunglasses and a toy car with a revolving cylinder that the octopus spun round and round with its suckers.

As I wondered how to get my camera back without alarming my young friend, something surprising happened. She turned the camera around and began to film my diving partner and me.

The intriguing images she captured — videos of her own arms draped over the camera lens with our bodies in the background — had a profound effect on me. After many years filming octopuses and hundreds of other animals that call the Sea Forest home, for the first time I was seeing the world — and myself — from her perspective.

We must have looked strange to her in our masks and with our underwater flashlights. But in that moment I remembered that despite all our technology, we are not so different from our animal kin. Every breath of air, every drop of water, every bite of food comes from the living planet we share.

Monday is Earth Day, and I am tempted to ask myself how humanity can save our wild planet and undo the devastation we have unleashed upon the natural world. Where I live, in the Cape of Good Hope, I am privileged to be surrounded by nature, but we are grappling with pollution and dwindling numbers of shellfish, fish, raptors and insect species. Worldwide, we are at a tipping point with an estimated 69 percent decline in wildlife populations.

When I consider the vast network of living creatures on earth, it’s clear that “saving the planet” is the wrong goal. Unless earth gets obliterated by an asteroid or experiences some similar catastrophic event, the planet could go on for several billion years. But without the biosphere that makes it possible for us to eat and breathe, humanity could not survive.

The question we should be asking is what caused the precipitous increase in species loss and what can we do to reverse it. To me, it all started when we disconnected from our wild origins. While agricultural and technological revolutions have enabled massive population growth and innovation , they have also instilled the belief that we can control nature, that our planet is an infinite resource to be mined for our advancement, comfort and entertainment.

Today 56 percent of the world population lives in urban areas, a percentage expected to grow to nearly 70 percent by 2050 . That means that more than half of us are cut off from reminders that we are still part of nature and utterly dependent on its health. It’s only when something truly devastating happens, like the recent flooding in Dubai, that we remember that even the greatest human advancements can be brought to a standstill by nature’s power.

I am not calling for us to leave all modern comforts behind, just pleading for us to get to know nature better, rather than try to “save” her.

In the past decade I have taken more than 4,000 dives in the Sea Forest. My encounters with mollusks, sharks and jellyfish there have convinced me that there is much we will lose if we do not value the tremendous abundance of life on earth.

We do this first by protecting biodiversity hot spots and by restoring degraded ecosystems; the enormous regenerative power I see every day in nature is what gives me hope for the future. It also means learning from and supporting Indigenous people who protect 80 percent of the world’s biodiversity and who have, over millenniums, developed many innovative ways to live with the land and sea. One promising example of partnership is a recent grant from the National Science Foundation to support collaboration between Indigenous ecological knowledge and Western science.

Activities that cause long-term destruction of the sea and earth, such as strip mining , deep sea mining and industrial trawling, need to be halted immediately. Farming methods have to change, with greater emphasis on soil recovery and regeneration . We must continue to find alternatives to fossil fuels and push for a worldwide reduction in the production and use of plastics.

But each of us has a role to play, too; it starts with challenging ourselves to reconnect with the wild. So much of our modern world seems designed to tame us: to dull our minds, to separate us from the natural world, to convince us that what will help us survive is more consumption.

Like my octopus friends, we fill our houses with shiny new things. But our piles of stuff are much bigger and the cost of acquisition much greater.

We can break free of this tame conditioning. When we dedicate even just a few minutes per day to observing wild creatures on their own terms, in their own homes, regardless of where we live, we connect with the concept of biodiversity not simply on an intellectual level but also on an emotional level. We see the world differently — and ourselves, too.

How strange it is that one silly primate can see itself as separate from all those it shares this world with. What might happen if we remembered we are a part of this wild world — and let that understanding and humility guide every choice we make?

Craig Foster is a co-founder of the Sea Change Project and the author of the forthcoming “Amphibious Soul: Finding the Wild in a Tame World.” His film “My Octopus Teacher” won the Academy Award for best documentary feature in 2021.
