Madras University's distance education courses see more takers

CHENNAI: The enrolment for distance education courses offered by University of Madras is witnessing a steep rise of over 38% this academic year. As per the statistics, as many as 29,883 people have taken admission in various programmes of the varsity’s Institute of Distance Education (IDE).

The number is likely to rise further as the deadline for submitting applications for the courses is only on October 31. In the academic year 2021-22, IDE had enrolled 21,058 students, and the year before (2020-21), the figure was just 12,000. Director of IDE, S Aravindhan, said the MBA course of the institute is much in demand. “For MBA course alone, we have received 15,000 applications so far,” he said.

According to the varsity officials, in the post-Covid-19 period, professionals have realised the value of acquiring additional skills and they are opting for courses in distance education stream to enhance their curriculum vitae. Besides, the online and offline classes offered by the IDE is also attracting many to join the courses, they said. A faculty of the university said in last two years, the varsity saw more professionals from IT industry opting for courses like MBA.

“Many are also opting to hone their English language skills. BA in English is also one of the most popular courses,” he said, adding in the last two years, there has also been a surge in demand of MSc (counselling psychology) course. The faculty said after the mental health issues people faced during the Covid, the demand for counsellors has increased.

“Be it in schools or offices, counsellors are being recruited everywhere and to cash in on the opportunity, more students are opting for the course,” he pointed out. The IDE director hinted that looking at the overwhelming response for the courses, the deadline for submitting applications is likely to be extended by another 10 days.

To further popularise the distance education programmes, the IDE is all set to launch nine online courses next year. “We are currently working on preparing study materials for the courses. Once it is complete, the courses will be launched,” he said. The IDE of the university provides 19 UG programmes and 28 PG programmes.

• SC/ST Scholarship:  IITM offers renewable SC/ST scholarships for students whose annual parental income doesn’t exceed INR 4,50,000. Students under this scheme are offered tuition fee exemption along with free meals and a monthly pocket allowance of INR 250. 
• Institute Merit-cum-Means Scholarships:  Only 25% of admitted students are eligible for this 67% tuition fee waiver from IITM. Students whose annual parental income is less than INR 4.5 lakh are eligible to apply for merit-cum-means scholarships. Also, a minimum GPA of 5.0 from the previous semester is a requirement for the scholarship to be renewed.
• Institute Notional Prize:  Based on the JEE rank and annual parental income not exceeding INR 4,50,000, IITM offers a one-time grant of INR 1000 to the 7% of the students admitted.
• Institute Free Studentship:  IIT Madras offers a free studentship for students whose annual parental income is less than INR 4,50,000 lakhs. Students are exempted from paying 67% of the tuition fee under this scheme. However, the scholarship is only offered to 25% of the UG students.
• Dr K Vasanth Rau Scholarship:  This scholarship is given based on JEE rank to students having a parental income up to INR 5.50 lakhs. The scholarship is renewed based on a GPA of 6.5 and above.
• M. Sankaraiah and M Saradha (Mithigiri) Scholarship:  This scholarship is awarded to the students of B.Tech / Dual Degree Electrical Engineering based on the highest CGPA at the end of the 4th semester.
• Ministry of Minority Affairs, GoI Meritcum-Means Scholarship:  Students belonging to minority communities such as Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis and whose parental income does not exceed INR 2.5 lakhs per annum are eligible.

Jee advanced is the eligibility criteria.U can find the form in the jee advanced website, price may vary year to year and to write advanced,u need to pass jee mains.The process of admission starts around July in my time and went for approx 1 month.there were 6 rounds where u can put colleges in ur prefernce and freeze or slide them accordingly.i was from narayana colege so they trained me like anything in last year with exams every alternate day or so.timing was 3 hours of the exams

Is IITM BS degree in Data Science worth

• Even though it's an online Degree, the environment is quite engaging. They divided students in 12 houses and organize many intra house competition to attain maximum participation of the students.
• The flexibility, it allows us to choose how many courses one want to register according to their capability or time and even allows to pursue this any other Degree along with it.
• Teaching, teaching being a plus point sometimes fire back. No doubt faculties are one of the top faculties of India but teaching style of some faculties you might not like, everything goes above the head.
• The fees might be too much for many of the students. Even though fee wavier is there but it's still too much for many students specially those who want to pursue with another degree.

Students have to give an entrance exam conducted by IITM itself, the fee for which is 3000 INR(1,500 INR for SC/ST) but JEE students who have qualified for JEE Advanced don't need to give the exam but have to register for the program by paying the same fee. Students from any background can avail for this Degree if they have English and Maths as the main subject in 10th class, there is no age barrier as well. After the registration you will be enrolled in program and they will provide you 4 weeks of content, the exam will come from these content only. There is no cutoff for this exam but you have to score minimum 40% in qualifier exam to continue program(35% for OBC/EWS and 30% for SC/ST). The registraion opens three times a year i.e.November,June and August the time may vary a little bit.

Students can get admission on the basis of jee mains if they are qualified for jee advanced,will get direct admission without any exam .Those who are want to apply without jee mains can also get admission by giving qualifying exam for which they teaches 1month the syallabus which is going to ask on exam. Should I do an online BSc data science and programming course from IIT Madras? Will I get placement after it?

My friend has enrolled himself for B.Sc. Data Science and Programming course from IIT M. He carefully accessed the course curriculum.

According to him, the course requires at least 4 to 6 hours of study each day.

One can not simply study it on the weekends and cope up. My friend has a tight working schedule, and therefore, he is considering leaving this course.

But if you can devote time for the course each day, then this course will definitely benefit you. The placement statistics are not very clear but the curriculum is rigorous and so you will learn new skills that will come handy during job search.

How are grades given in IIT-Madras?

At IIT Madras, the strength of the class determines the grading system. The mean and standard deviation of marks obtained are calculated.

Let X be the marks obtained by the student, in that case:

The top 5% of the students in the class get an S grade. For smaller classes, the professors are at a discretion regarding the grading system. They grade based on bands in most cases. For example, if a band of students scored from 81-92, and the other band scored from 95-99, the first band will get an A and the second band an S.

In case of no bands, it depends upon the concerned instructor who then decides where to draw a line between the two grades.

One of my friends is an alumnus of IIT Madras and according to him, Professor V. Balakrishnan’s classes are must-experience classes at IIT Madras. However, he is not sure whether Prof. Balakrishnan teaches whole courses these days.

My friend was very fond of Prof. Balakrishnan and according to him, if you hear from any of your friends in the Engineering Physics/ Physics Grad stream that Prof. V. Balakrishnan is giving a guest lecture, make sure you attend it. You will learn something new and will be inspired.

The introductory part of the Indian edition of the Feynman Lectures was written by Prof. V. Balakrishnan if I am not wrong. You can read about him on Wikipedia. You will also find some of his finest lectures on YouTube.

His is classes on Quantum Mechanics and Dynamical Systems were my friend’s favorite.
