Tay Money – The Assignment

Tay Money flexes on a fiery new track entitled “The Assignment”. Fueled by a skittering bounce, Tay eases into her confident and charismatic bars with an announcement, “I understood the assignment”. Ahead of its release, the track has already made its rounds on TikTok with over 280K videos and climbing.

“The Assignment” is available now at all digital retailers. Listen HERE .

Tay Money upholds her red-hot streak this summer. In July, she made her U.S. major festival debut with a standout set at Rolling Loud Miami , bringing the crowd to its feet. “The Assignment” arrives on the heels of a string of summer anthems including tracks “Shake” and “Asthma Pump” which both feature the unfiltered lyrics and attitude that have made the Dallas artist one to watch. Having been featured on the digital cover of ELEVATOR , and hailed by FLAUNT as “one of the hardest female rappers of our generation,” Tay’s in the midst of a hot streak that stretches back to the release of Blockedt . She made that EP with heavyweights like Derrick Milano (a co-writer on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hot Girl Summer”) and Bankroll Got It (producers of hits like “DO DAT” by Stunna 4 Vegas featuring DaBaby & Lil Baby)—collaborations that fed into the boundary-pushing energy of her tracks since. “Shake” showcases an exciting new side of Tay’s style, highlighting her ability to craft emotionally stirring songs while still sticking to her favorite topic―flaunting her assets.

About Tay Money

In just over two years, Tay Money , the Athens-born, Dallas-based rapper has racked up millions of views and streams thanks to her witty punchlines and unique musical approach. Her debut song, “Na Na” marked the beginning of her career as an artist and set the tone for the originality that she would bring to the rest of her records to come. Within months of her first release, she was selling out shows in Dallas and had gained a cult-like following among her listeners (now dubbed Tay Army).

With her bouncy trap beats, unmistakable Texas twang, and unapologetically catchy rhymes, Tay began to reach commercial success with her breakout song “Trapper’s Delight” in 2018. With what was originally a risky move to expand her music outside the limits of her hometown of Dallas, the video for “Trapper’s Delight” amassed over 1.1 million views in under two months. Since then, she’s continued to release many more viral hits including “Bussin” (11 million YouTube views), “Bussin 2.0” with Saweetie (7 million YouTube views), and “Brat” featuring Mulatto, two of which are on her recently released EP, Blockedt . The widely acclaimed project led to many defining moments for Tay , landing spots on coveted playlists including Spotify’s New Music Friday, Feelin Myself, and Release Radar as well as Apple Music’s The Plug and New In Hip Hop. The project also received praise from FLAUNT who hailed her as “one of the biggest women rappers in Texas”, SPIN who noted that she was “one of the biggest women rappers in Texas”, and ELEVATOR who named her their February cover star. Now, with the cosigns of some of the biggest up-and-coming female rappers, and having surpassed the milestone of over 100 million U.S. streams, Tay plans to build on her momentum with her forthcoming EP.

US Army Sergeant Gordon Black's Legal Battle Unfolds Amidst Russian Detention

S taff Sgt. Gordon Black, 34, was detained by Russian authorities in the port city of Vladivostok on May 2 on suspicion he stole money from his Russian girlfriend. Black, an infantryman, was stationed in South Korea and was en route to a new assignment at Fort Cavazos, Texas, when he made an unauthorized detour to Russia.

RIA Novosti, a Russian state-owned news agency, reported Monday that Black’s defense team has filed an appeal of the soldier’s pretrial detention. According to the article, which cites a spokeswoman for the court, objections to the motion can be filed until May 20. The US Army confirmed the identity of the detained soldier and stated that he had been stationed in South Korea prior to his arrest.

“The Russian Federation notified the U.S. Department of State of the criminal detention in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,” stated Cynthia Smith, an Army spokesperson. She added, “The Army notified his family, and the U.S. Department of State is providing appropriate consular support to the soldier in Russia. Given the sensitivity of this matter, we are unable to provide additional details at this time.”

Black’s case is not isolated; other Americans, such as Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former Marine Paul Whelan, are also being held in Russia under espionage charges, which they and their employers deny. US Marine veteran Trevor Reed was arrested in Moscow in 2019 after being convicted of drunkenly attacking Russian police officers during a visit to the country. That includes a drugs case against basketball star Brittney Griner, who was freed last year in a prisoner swap.

Black’s mother, Melody Jones, told ABC News that she had a conversation with her son before he left and told him that she was uncomfortable with him going to Russia, but he went anyway. “I knew something was going to happen. I felt like he was being set up by her,” Jones said.

The 34-year-old will be detained on charges of theft until July 2, according to Russian state-run news outlet RIA Novosti, which cited an official at a regional court.

Covering the Other Manhattan Trial

Tracey Tully’s reporting domain is New Jersey. But for the next six weeks, she’ll journey across the Hudson River to report on the federal corruption trial of Senator Robert Menendez.

Senator Robert Menendez, wearing a suit and a red and purple striped tie, walks out of the courthouse with other people. A photographer takes his picture.

By Terence McGinley

Times Insider explains who we are and what we do, and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together.

Former President Donald J. Trump’s trial is not the only case The New York Times is covering in Lower Manhattan this week.

Less than a quarter-mile from Manhattan criminal court, where Mr. Trump faces 34 felony counts, Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey is being tried on a web of federal corruption charges. Prosecutors say Mr. Menendez steered weapons and government aid to Egypt, propped up a friend’s halal meat business and meddled in criminal investigations that targeted his allies. The government has accused Mr. Menendez and his wife of accepting bribes for these favors in the form of cash, gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz.

Tracey Tully was one of five Times reporters in Federal District Court on Monday for the first day of jury selection in the trial. Ms. Tully, who covers all things New Jersey, joined The Times in 2017 after stints at The New York Daily News and The Albany Times Union. Three years into her role editing news about the New York region, she switched to reporting, which was a full-circle moment: Ms. Tully began her journalism career more than 30 years ago as a reporter in Hudson County, N.J., where Mr. Menendez grew up and where he rose as a political figure.

In an interview conducted after Monday’s proceedings , Ms. Tully spoke to Times Insider — from a hallway in the courthouse — about the case against Mr. Menendez, and its reverberations in New Jersey. This conversation has been edited.

This is not the first time Menendez has faced corruption charges, right?

Seven years ago, in 2017, he was on trial related to allegations of accepting bribes from a doctor, who was a close friend of his. That ended in a hung jury, resulting in a mistrial. The scope of the allegations in 2017 was more limited than what he is facing in this trial.

Your reporting has described Menendez as a powerful person in the Democratic Party in New Jersey. How have the charges resonated there?

The charges were a statewide political cataclysm. During the first trial, in 2017, people really stood with him, or at least they withheld their criticism. This time around he was almost immediately abandoned by most Democratic leaders in New Jersey. The day of the indictment, Governor Phil Murphy, a Democrat, said Menendez should resign. There was a cascade of fellow Democrats calling for his resignation. It took a few days, but finally, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, a longtime friend of Menendez and a very close political ally, called for his resignation. That was remarkable because Booker testified as a character witness during Menendez’s first trial.

What the senator has said is, Please, let me have my day in court — I deserve an opportunity to be innocent until proven guilty. He has refused calls to resign.

And his current Senate term ends this year, right?

People smelled blood in the water, and it was a frenzy for his Senate seat among fellow Democrats and Republican hopefuls. The first lady of New Jersey, Tammy Murphy, began running as a Democrat for the seat. That set up a clash with Andy Kim, a congressman from South Jersey. There was a lawsuit over the design of election ballots, which are incredibly important to the political party structure in New Jersey. The federal indictment against Menendez fueled all of this. There’s been a domino effect.

Seven years ago, you joined The Times as an editor. What made you want to go back to being a reporter?

I missed it. I just got the itch again. Being an editor was great for 20 years. I worked part time while I raised three kids. It suited my schedule. Nick Corasaniti, who covered New Jersey for The Times, went to the Politics desk to cover the 2020 election. There was an opening, and I had the audacity to ask, Can I do this again?

You’re normally responsible for covering news across an entire state. How does it feel to be assigned to one courthouse to cover a trial that could last more than six weeks?

I’m a regional reporter and a generalist; anything that happens in New Jersey, I get to cover it. Which is a blessing and a curse. This will be narrowly focused. I’m going to be traveling from New Jersey to Lower Manhattan every day court is in session. So that’s different. But the assignment is also no different from what journalists do all the time. You dive into whatever the story of the moment is, and you cover that.

Byron buxton could rejoin twins by the weekend; justin topa out for six weeks.

Byron Buxton , who ran the bases twice during the Twins ' road trip, took batting practice and chased fly balls before Tuesday's game at Target Field.

His next game, however, will be in St. Paul. Buxton is scheduled to play two games on a rehab assignment with the Class AAA Saints on Wednesday and Thursday, ruling him out from playing in the Twins' three-game series against the New York Yankees.

"We're just going to give him a few more days to settle into some high-speed activity and then I think we can activate him," manager Rocco Baldelli said.

Buxton, sidelined because of right knee inflammation, was eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Sunday. He's now lined up to join the Twins in Cleveland this weekend.

"With Byron's knee, we have to be a little bit cognizant of the fact that he hasn't really had a short IL stint with that," Twins head trainer Nick Paparesta said. "It's always been a long-term type of situation. For him to get out there and do those things, he just has to gain a little bit more of that confidence and trust in that thing, and I think that's kind of where we are now."

Runnin' Royce

Royce Lewis , out since Opening Day because of a partly torn quad in his right leg, is expected to take another step forward at the end of this week. He'll move from running in a straight line to doing change-of-direction drills.

"This is a big week for him in regards to volume," Paparesta said.

Sign up for our Twins Update newsletter

Lewis' return is not imminent, though he is taking ground balls and swinging in the batting cage. Once he's running well while changing directions, his next hurdle will be running the bases for several days before he's cleared to begin a rehab assignment.

"Similar to Nick Gordon last year, it'll be a little bit lengthier progression of the bases due to the length of time he's been down," Paparesta said. "Then we'll get him into some rehab games from that point forward. Once he gets onto the bases, we'll have a pretty good idea of when that rehab progression will start."

Topa out until July

Twins reliever Justin Topa made four appearances on a rehab assignment before he was shut down with more soreness in his knee. He was diagnosed with a 25% tear of his left patellar tendon and he will be shut down for six weeks.

It's a disappointing setback for Topa, who was walking around the clubhouse with crutches Tuesday with his left leg immobilized in a brace.

"To have this, what I thought was a small little thing, snowball into a bigger, longer rehab type thing, it's extremely frustrating," Topa said. "Especially coming over to a new organization."

Topa, likely out through mid-July, declined knee surgery to try to salvage his 2024 season. He underwent platelet-rich plasma and stem cell injections after he received a second opinion from Dr. Tim Kremchek in Cincinnati.

"The injection was the best option to get back as fast as possible," said Topa, who had a 2.61 ERA over 69 innings for Seattle last year. "My goal from day one is to get this done and over with, pitch this year and make an impact this year. Unfortunately, there's a sense of, maybe, it was a waste of six weeks after the first go-round. This time we're on the right track."

When Topa, 33, initially felt knee pain in spring training, he said it was diagnosed as a "tendonitis type situation." He underwent a follow-up magnetic resonance imaging exam last week, receiving a second opinion when surgery was presented as an option.

"The goal here right now is to get it as best as possible, get into a spot that doesn't bother me throwing and circle back at the end of the season or maybe down the road" about surgery, Topa said.

* Twins reliever Brock Stewart underwent a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in his right shoulder joint Monday. He hoped to begin throwing last weekend, but "we have to get his arm strength where it needs to be," Paparesta said.

* Michael Helman hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning while Diego A. Castillo produced four hits and three runs in the St. Paul Saints' 13-7 victory over the first-place Omaha Storm Chasers on Tuesday at CHS Field.

Bobby Nightengale joined the Star Tribune in May, 2023, after covering the Reds for the Cincinnati Enquirer for five years. He's a graduate of Bradley University.
