Meryl Streep Honored at Cannes by Tearful Juliette Binoche: 'You Changed the Way We Look at Women'
Meryl Streep received an honorary Palme d'or to kick off the 2024 Cannes Film Festival

Meryl Streep is kicking off the 2024 Cannes Film Festival with emotional tributes.
On May 14, the three-time Oscar winner, 74, was presented with an honorary Palme d'or — the festival's highest honor — at the opening night ceremony.
Actress Juliette Binoche presented Streep with the honor, which comes 35 years after Streep made her Cannes debut with 1988's Evil Angels , for which she won the festival's best actress award.
Binoche, 60, cried as she spoke about Streep's impact, referencing some of her classic roles, including the 1978 miniseries Holocaust , 1979's Kramer vs. Kramer and 1982's Sophie's Choice , among others.
"You have carved out an indelible place for yourself in the history of cinema," Binoche told Streep onstage. "You are an international treasure."
"What I could sense while watching your films is that you have to fulfill your dreams, our dreams and beyond. You change the way we look at women," she added. "You changed the way we look at women in the cinema world and also helping us to look at ourselves differently."

When Streep took the microphone to accept the honor, she told the audience she coincidentally watched Binoche's 2023 film The Taste of Things and joked, "I had to go to bed, I was crying so hard."
After choking up herself — and quipping that Americans often mispronounce Cannes — Streep thanked her longtime agent Kevin Huvane and her hair and makeup stylist Roy Helen, the latter of whom she deemed "responsible for almost every single one of the characters that I have ever played in the last half century."

"For me, watching those clips, it's like looking out the window of a bullet train, watching my youth fly into my middle age right on to where I am standing on the stage tonight," she said.

Streep also reflected on her first time at Cannes in 1988, noting that she was skeptical about the future of her career when she premiered Evil Angels at the festival.
"Thirty-five years ago when I was here for the first time, I was already a mother of three. I was about to turn 40 and I thought that my career was over," she said. "And that was not an unrealistic expectation for actresses at that time... But my mother, who was usually right about everything, said to me, 'Meryl, darling, you'll see it all goes so fast. So fast.' And it does. Except for my speech, which is too long."
The Cannes Film Festival is running now through May 25.

Mobile mini-concerts are part of minnesota bach festival events.
It's like DoorDash, but delivering live music instead of food. Or you could call it comparable to caroling, but not at Christmastime.
Such are the Bach Society of Minnesota's "Mobile Mini-Concerts," which have been bringing baroque music to parks, libraries and doorsteps since soon after the pandemic began, via singers and solo instrumentalists.
The idea was hatched in Montreal, where the Bach Society's artistic director, Matthias Maute, leads a group called Ensemble Caprice.
"Just breaking through the silence and breaking through the solitude," Maute said from Montreal. "It was so successful that 100,000 people have been recipients here in Quebec and Ontario."
An internationally renowned baroque flutist and recorder player born in Germany, Maute has led the Bach Society since 2016. He's been encouraging the organization to meet audiences where they are, and the "Mobile Mini-Concerts" do that in a more than metaphorical sense.
The Bach Society will be presenting three days' worth next week as part of its Minnesota Bach Festival, which runs through June 1. This weekend, singers are invited to participate in a community singalong of music by Antonio Vivaldi before performing it with the society's chorus and orchestra the following night. Throw in a festival-closing concert designed for all ages, and it seems this 92-year-old organization is putting out the welcome mat.
A schedule of times and locations for "Mobile Mini-Concerts" can be found at bachsocietymn.org . It's also possible to request to have a concert delivered to your door or in your garden.
"It's always outdoors, and that's the main thing, that musicians leave the privileged ivory tower of the concert hall and go where people are," Maute said. "The point from the beginning is for musicians to see: Does our music really do something for people? Test it with reality and unprepared situations and none of the background that we assume people have if they come to concert halls."
Singer and guitarist Gary Ruschman (a former member of vocal group Cantus) said the concerts were indispensable early in the pandemic.
"For those of us whose performing careers felt very much up in the air due to fear and lockdowns, having an open-air way to get in front of audiences was an enormous boon, both artistically and for the financial peace of mind," he said. "I know all of us participants in those first couple of years were grateful that the Bach Society had the courage and creativity to try something like this."
Flutist Anita Rieder said that she relishes the connections she makes with listeners, particularly children. And the Bach Society's associate artistic director, violinist Marco Real-d'Arbelles, said it has created some lasting memories.
"I was at one of the Minneapolis parks for a mini-concert," he said. "There were families enjoying the day and children at the playground. A man who'd been having a picnic with his girlfriend came up to me and explained that he was about to propose. Would I be willing to help? So the mini-concert helped set the mood. At the end of the performance, the man got down on one knee, luckily she said yes, and the cars that had stopped to witness the scene honked in celebration."

Timothy Spall has been praised by viewers of the 2024 Bafta TV Awards for his sincere and unrehearsed acceptance speech.
The actor, 67, won the Best Actor prize for his role in the four-part BBC true crime drama The Sixth Commandment .
Brian Cox had been the heavy favourite to take home the trophy for his role in Succession , while Steve Coogan was also tipped to be a contender for his portrayal of celebrity paedophile Jimmy Savile in The Reckoning .
Dominic West ( The Crown ), Kane Robinson ( Top Boy ) and Papa Essiedu ( The Lazarus Project ) were also nominated in the category.
However, it was Spall who emerged victorious, and the actor appeared to take the podium without having written a speech.
Spall described the acting profession as being “a soppy old thing, standing up pretending to be somebody and pissing around in costume”.
“The reality is, sometimes you get a chance to play people that have had a terrible thing happen to them, and all they wanted is love. This is a story about many things, about terrible crimes, but it’s also about love,” he told the audience at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
“We’re just storytellers, aren’t we, really? When it makes a difference and we can all share in the human condition ... even though acting is a silly stupid thing, it’s lovely.”
Gesturing at the trophy, he muttered: “I’ve always wanted one of these.”
Viewers shared praise for the actor on social media.
Really pleased Timothy Spall won best #BAFTAs actor for Sixth Commandment,” wrote journalist Harry Wallop. “It was such a fine performance in a really compelling drama. (And lovely acceptance speech – so rare for someone to admit they actually rather coveted a Bafta!)”

“As someone who grew up on [the Spall-starring 1980s comedy] Auf Wiedersehen Pet , great to see Timothy Spall get a BAFTA and give a brilliantly human nonscripted speech. Always be Barry to me,” another person wrote.
“Timothy Spall giving the the most ‘real’, genuine speech, from the most deserved winner,” someone else wrote.
Elsewhere at the ceremony, Joe Lycett showed up dressed as Queen Elizabeth after losing a bet , while a dance tribute to Peaky Blinders left some viewers scratching their heads .

Dozens of Duke students walk out ahead of Jerry Seinfeld's commencement speech
DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Sunday was a big day for students like Victor.
"It's something that like it's been like a dream for me come true," he said.
Uwe is from Nigeria and is now graduating with his master's degree at Duke University with his son watching him walk.
"You know, when he sees his dad coming to Duke University, graduating from Duke University, he's going to feel empowered... He's going to feel energetic, you know, to do the same," he said.
Romina Sequeira said she also felt the weight of the moment walking as a first-generation college student.
"It's an accomplishment for my whole family and also for this class because everyone works really hard. So congratulations to Duke students," she said.
The commencement speaker, Jerry Seinfeld, brought mixed reactions as he took the podium. A few dozen students walked out of the ceremony, some carrying Palestinian flags while chanting "Free Palestine" that were later replaced with "Jerry, Jerry" chants from the crowd. Seinfeld has been vocal about his support for Israel.
As you might expect from the famed comedian, his speech was filled with jokes.
"You went to Duke, that is an unbelievable privilege. I now have an honorary doctorate, a humane letters degree from Duke University, and if I can figure out a way to use that, I will," Seinfeld said adding a piece of advice to graduates.
"Find something where you love the good parts and don't mind the bad parts too much. The torture you're comfortable with, this is the golden path to victory in life."
Ultimately, Seinfeld told students to work hard and keep their humor as they enter the next chapter of their lives.
