The business description section of your business plan should give the reader an overview of your proposed business, including the industry, purpose, operations, staffing, history and other information that will provide the agency with an interesting overview of your business. 

In this section, the reader needs to get a handle of your business concept, model and likelihood of success. 

Since your business plan is for immigration purposes, consider the perspective of immigration officers. They won’t know your team, facilities, or legal structure yet—you want to fill in the blanks for them in a polished and organized way. Company description will be the ‘elevator pitch’ section of your business plan.  So present your company like it is well poised to accept their visa approval and hit the ground running. This section should answer the questions who you are, what you do and why you do it. Make sure that it is short as possible as the other portions of the plan will contain the nitty gritty details of your proposal. You can use this portion to point the immigration to the relevant sections, if they are interested to know more about a particular aspect of your business. 

Here are the details that MUST be included in this section:

  • Company name  – What is the name of your business as registered in the official documents?
  • Business structure  – Sole proprietorship, LLC, partnership or corporation? Your business structure is going to be important data to include. Who owns what percentage of your business? The immigration and investors will want this information to be clearly spelled out.
  • Ownership/ Management  – Since you are presenting to the immigration or to investors, this is critical data. Who are the leaders in your company?Who will own and manage the business in the U.S.? What qualifies them for their positions and inspires confidence? Work experience, past successes, MBAs, and other degrees can be referenced for each person. You want to showcase everyone in their best light, remembering that the immigration and investors judge people first and ideas second.
  • Location  – Where is the company headquartered? Discuss the circumstances of your use of any space mentioned in this section. Include whether you own or lease, and what the pertinent terms of that lease are if you have one. Discuss what the long-term plan is for any space you have, or what your needs will be for a future facility. If you have a home office, you can include that here as well.
  • Company history  – When was the business started, what was the inspiration behind it, what need does your company fulfill? If you are an existing business seeking funding for expansion or a new project, the company history section is going to be pretty significant. You’ll want to show  that you have a strong track record of successful projects, weathering the tough times, and making sound business decisions. Who did you decide to partner with? Have you launched new products over time? Made improvements on facilities or services? Streamlined operations? If your business is a start up, you won’t have a company history per se, but you could use the company history section to give a concise description of how you decided to start your venture. What was the “light bulb” moment? Who else was involved?
  • Mission Statement – What is the purpose of your company? Your mission statement should reflect every facet of your business: the range and nature of the products you offer, pricing, quality, service, marketplace position, growth potential, use of technology, and your relationships with your customers, employees, suppliers, competitors and the community.
  • Products / services and Target Market  – What do you sell? To whom are you selling it to? You may overlook some fundamental elements when describing your products and services because it’s so common to you but do remember,  you should be the expert in the industry.  The basics may not be as clear to the immigration or to your potential investor. Assume they have little to no understanding of your industry and product or service.
  • Competitive Advantages  – This section should describe the logic of why you will succeed, how you differ, or what you are doing better than the competition. To define the competitive advantage, try to answer why people will want to do business with you.
  • Objectives  – This is not to be confused with the company’s mission, vision or values, which are not useful as strategic goals. Your objective must be specific, measurable and time bound. It must also be a single goal (that is, growth or profitability), although subordinate goals may follow from the strategic objective. To formulate your objective, show the immigration or the investors your plans in the immediate future.
  • Vision statement  – How do you envision the future of the company? It’s also a good opportunity, if you haven’t done so already, to evaluate and put to in your business plan some of the more intangible facets of your business principles, ideals, and cultural philosophies that will allow the immigration and investors to better grasp your own corporate identity.  

The whole point of submitting an immigration-compliant business plan is to convince the office that your venture will be beneficial for the economy of a particular U.S. location. Take this opportunity to “sell” your business to these US authorities. Don’t be afraid to share your enthusiasm. Excitement usually draws the reader in, but be careful not to get too carried away. Make them look forward to reading the rest of the plan.

Writing style is as important as content. Make sure to have someone (preferably, a professional editor) proofread your business plan. Allot time to read and re-read your document.
