Mothers are not just regular people; they are superwomen. My mum is a superwoman because she was there for me at every step of the way, giving support and encouragement. She never left me alone whenever I needed her. She was there for me at any time of the day or night, no matter the circumstances.

I find motivation in every aspect of her behavior, including her effort, tenacity, loyalty, and dedication. I obey my Mother not only because she’s my mother or because we should show respect to our parents. But I obey and love her because of how well she cared for me while I could not communicate. My love, care and respect for her will never end. When I was a little kid unable to talk, she fulfilled all my requirements, even smaller or bigger.

Still, she always tries to fulfill all my smaller needs. She was the one who showed me how to walk, how to talk, and how to take care of myself. Similarly, my mom is entirely responsible for significant advancements that I’ve made in my life. If she hadn’t shown me how to take baby steps, I won’t be able to take these more significant moves in the right direction.

Long Essay on My Mother (500-600 Words)

Introduction

Mothers are the most important person in the family since she is the link between all of us. She never forgets to look out for the well-being and nutritional needs of everyone in the household. She is constantly concerned about even the smallest necessities of the family. She helps manage the house, the academic performance of their kids, their careers, and their future. The finest creature that God has ever made in this universe is the mother because she loves her kids and family without conditions.

Importance of Mother in Life

“Maa” is not just a word; it’s a feeling in itself. When we say maa, many of our problems seem to fade away magically. Moms play crucial roles in every aspect of our life from early in the morning till she goes to bed in the night without any expectation. She always makes us happy without letting us feel down for a moment. Without mom, we cannot imagine our life.

Mothers are the First Teachers in our Life

Mother gives us hope and motivation for every up and down of our life. She is the only one who knows their kids very closely and deeply. No matter where children are in life, whether they are starting school, getting married, or having a child, they always need their mother’s help. She is the one who shows kids what it means to be a strong support system they can count on.

My Mother: My Superwoman

When I think of love, honesty, truth, and compassion in this world, the first person that comes to me is my mother. My mum has always been a source of motivation for me. She is a remarkable human being. She is the lady whom I look up to and respect the most. She is the first person who wakes up each and every morning in the house. She gets up at 5 AM in the morning and comes near me to adore. This is the first thing she does every day.

After that, she gets my brother and me out of bed and gets us ready for school. She then prepares tasty breakfast and lunch for us, and she has a new dish each day. After that, she goes to wake up my father with a cup of tea. My mother and father take us to the bus station and leave. Mom’s reassuring hand wave is a constant reminder that she will be there for us forever. She is helpful to us with our schoolwork and studies. When any of us become ill, she is the one who stays up through the night worrying about us. She is always highly worried about our well-being, especially our schooling and health.

In addition to us, my mom takes care of my dad and grandparents. We all look up to her as a pillar of strength. All my family members are bound by her strong bonds, and she is responsible for creating them. She always meets my grandparents’ all needs at the right time. She never turned down helping our neighbors or friends. She always set herself as a role model for us. For me, my mother is the real superwoman.

No amount of money can ever repay what a mother has done for us. Our only duty is to repay her love and affection. We should always make our moms feel special with small and sweet gestures, even though she won’t ask for anything in return for her love, care, and protection. It is our duty to express to her how much we love her if we want to make her feel special. We should always be sweet and kind to our lovely mothers.

I hope the above given essay on My Mother will be helpful in understanding the importance of a mother in our life as well as how to write an essay on my mother.

Essay on My Mother 500 words

My mother has had the greatest influence on me throughout my life. Through her, I have learned a lot of things about how to traverse the various facets of life. By seeing the kind of person she was while I grew up, I have modeled the kind of woman I want to become as well. My mother is my guide, idol, and source of inspiration in life, and I can say it with great pride.

My mother is the one person whom I can completely trust. She is the main reason for my progress and development since she works relentlessly. She never makes any distinctions within the family and provides our entire family with equal and undivided devotion and love.

Her devotion to her family is unwavering and complete. She puts her own needs and desires aside for the sake of her family. My mother has been my greatest source of inspiration and has played an important role in my spiritual, emotional, and intellectual development.

Mothers are an Inspiration

A mother contains several characteristics that make her the embodiment of love and dedication. She is forgiving and understands us when we make mistakes. She takes severe measures to fix our mistakes and ensures that we are aware of our responsibilities. From sunrise to night, day in and day out, a mother works tirelessly to fulfill all of our dreams.

A mother is someone who consoles you in your time of need, makes sacrifices, and makes every attempt to provide a comfortable life for her child. A mother is a selfless individual who, like the sun, chases away all darkness and shines the light of happiness and love onto her family.

Motivation is a state of mind that enables us to successfully complete any project or task. It is a form of a natural environment that aids our physical and social growth. We know that we can attain any goal, even in the most difficult circumstances, because of inspiration coming from a person or an event.

For the growth of our abilities, we seek encouragement from other sources, such as a popular figure or a special person near us who encourages us whether we can achieve the objective even in difficult situations.

As a result, we are capable of completing this task. Numerous people are inspired by legendary or historical figures, and then many people are inspired by famous people or their parents. It makes no difference who your source of inspiration is or how much you are inspired by its ideas and practices in order to achieve your goal.

Mothers are a constant source of inspiration and motivation for children to become good individuals as they grow older. They instill in them a sense of responsibility, care and affection for others, and a sense of resilience that can hardly be found anywhere else.

Every person must have some sense of creativity in his life from which he can draw inspiration in order to attain his life objectives and progress. A teacher might be an inspiration in someone’s life, a successful person can be an inspiration in someone else’s, but in my life, my mother is my biggest motivation. She is the individual who has motivated me to attain my life’s objectives and to keep moving forward.

My mother is also an admiration to me because, while most individuals work to gain popularity and a name in society, a mother never feels that. All she wants for her children is for them to achieve in life. She is not motivated by self-interest in her work. This is why I regard my mother to be a human manifestation of God.

My Mother is My Best Friend

My mother is my teacher, advisor, and greatest friend, and she plays many vital roles in my life. It works to instill confidence in me when I’m having an issue. Whatever I am today is solely due to my mother’s presence in my life, as she was present for both my successes and failures. I couldn’t picture my life without her, which is why I consider her my closest buddy.

Despite the many roles a woman plays in her life, the bond she shares with her mother is one of the purest relationships in the world. The bond between a mother and her child is indescribable. The mother is also the one who gives birth to her child and raises her. However, a mother’s love for her children never fades, and she is more concerned about their well-being than her own.

To safeguard her child, a mother is willing to face the worst disasters. A mother may shoulder all of the burdens alone, but she will not allow her offspring to be exposed to any form of heat. For these reasons, the mother is regarded as a manifestation of God on Earth, leading to the common proverb, “God cannot exist everywhere, therefore he made mothers.”

A Mother’s Strength

Although my mother may not physically be the strongest person, she nevertheless meets every challenge in her life and that of her family. She is a continual source of inspiration who reminds me to never give up in the face of adversity.

Above all, my mother is a major source of motivation for me, since she encourages me to enhance my abilities, academics, and talents. She inspires me to try again, to never give up, and work hard until I succeed. The way she traverses through the innumerable obstacles she faces in life is a constant reminder of the strength of a woman and how we can face any adversity that comes our way.

During difficult times, my mom is a lifesaver. Despite the fact that she chastises and corrects me, she is the only person capable of solving the problem, whether it is school or life-related. She is my instructor and guide, who shows me the way and steers me through the toughest moments.

Above all, even at the darkest of moments, she never leaves my side. She is an excellent teacher, a rigorous parent, a loyal friend, and a delightful companionship. Not only my mother, but every mother is an expression of God who devotes her entire life to her family and is deserving of much respect and admiration.

A mother possesses both inherent and learned attributes that identify her job as a mother. The key trait of a mother is responsibilities, which comes with motherhood. Regardless of age or repercussions, my mother displays unselfish love and affection.

She is my greatest source of strength and support, and she never fails to inspire and drive us through all of life’s ups and downs. Mothers can understand and empathize with their children. My mother’s most striking characteristic is her tremendous level of acceptance and tolerance. Despite the fact that she is dealing with several issues, she remains calm and patient.

Essay on Mother’s Day

A mother is the first teacher and the first friend of her children. She carries her child in her womb for nine months and nurtures her little one with all her heart and soul. She can decipher every gesture of her children since the time they are born. She loves her children unconditionally and guides them on the right path in life. She takes care of her children and ensures their safety in every way. We celebrate Mother's Day to thank our mothers, expressing our love and gratitude for them.

Origin of Mother’s Day

The celebration of Mother's Day first started in the country of Greece, and now it is celebrated in every part of the world. Every mother is devoted to her child throughout her life. Measuring the depth of a mother's sacrifice is not possible for anyone nor can we repay the priceless favors and love of our mothers. It is our duty to take care of our mothers and to respect and love them. Mother's day is celebrated to make our mothers feel special and shower all our love on her. Though it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, every year, yet, we should celebrate every day as Mother's Day to make our mothers feel special.

Methods of Celebration

Every child wants to celebrate Mother’s Day in a special way. Some bring gifts for their mothers, some cook for them, some cut cakes. Some people celebrate it at home, some go out and celebrate it. Of all the expensive things, handmade gifts always hold a special place in the hearts of our mothers. Some people take their mothers for a day-out and spend quality time with their mothers.

Mother is the first person that a child seeks for on returning home. She takes care of her children from their birth until her last breath. We cannot even count their innumerable contributions to our lives or all that they do from morning to night. Mothers continue to perform all their duties and responsibilities, throughout the day, even if they are tired. They never expect anything in return for all the love they shower upon us and the way they pamper us. However, we can say a big thank you to our mothers for all that she does for us.

We should obey our mothers and treat them with respect. It is a mother who shapes the character and personality of her children. All mothers play an important role in the growth and development of their children. She takes care of everything that her child needs. A mother is the first teacher of her children. She loves her children dearly, and in every difficulty, she stands by her children and guides them through thick and thin. It is a mother who stops her children from wrongdoing and dissuades them when they tend to go on the wrong path. She scolds them and guides them onto the right path, that’s why a mother is referred to as the first teacher of any child.

For a mother, her whole world is around her children. It is our duty to take care of our mothers, to never let them be unhappy, to never disrespect them, and no matter what to not leave them when they are hard on us. A mother always motivates her children, encourages them to move ahead and work harder in life. A mother's happiness always depends on her children, if her child is unhappy she can never be happy.

No matter how old a child is, when he comes home, he wants to see his mother first. When a child is in trouble, he runs to his mother for help. She forgets her desires while fulfilling the wishes of others. She feeds her children by preparing their favorite dishes, she narrates new stories to her children. She also helps in preparing her children's school projects, she also helps them with their studies. Mothers teach their children good manners, equity, morality, and humanity. In fact, for every child, his mother is the most precious gift of his life.

Celebration in School

Mother's day is celebrated with great pomp in many schools. Mothers are invited to their children’s schools on this day. On this day children adopt different methods to make their mother feel special, some children prepare essays for their mother, write a speech for them so that they can tell them how special their mothers are to them. Some children prepare cards for their mothers, some sing songs, while some get their mothers her favorite things. On this day, many games are played in schools in which mothers participate with their children.

In Brazil, Mother’s Day was initially promoted by the Catholic Church. However today it is celebrated with families by exchanging gifts like a western holiday. It has not been declared as an official holiday.

Mother’s Day has not been declared a holiday by the government of Canada. It is a private function held with families. Mothers and grandmothers receive gifts from their families.

Initially, it was seen as a US holiday. However, the government permitted its citizens to celebrate Mother’s Day. It is justified on the grounds that the holiday falls in line with the ethics and traditions of the Chinese people.

Therefore, Mother’s Day is celebrated in China to show respect and honor to the mothers. People usually buy flowers for their mothers. Lilies and carnations are the most popular choice here.

Celebrating Mother’s Day became a common practice in Egypt and Arabic countries only in the latter half of the last century. It is done by playing songs and showing respect and gratitude to mothers .

The idea of celebrating Mother’s Day became popular in France during World War I due to US soldiers posted there. The government of France started awarding mothers with large families. However, today it has become a commercial holiday and is celebrated by giving gifts and cards.

In Germany, the celebration of Mother’s Day began to promote the idea of motherhood. Initially, the holiday was not about recognizing the individuality of the mother. Rather it was an attempt of the nation to increase its population. It was declared as an official holiday and awards were given to mothers that had a large number of children.

Initially, Mother’s Day was not celebrated in Mexico as it was seen as a capitalist holiday of the US. However, in modern times, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm to honor mothers. The day usually begins with a special song for the mother and the rest of the day families spend time with their loved ones.

In Nepal, Mother’s Day is celebrated either with the entire family or by performing a pilgrimage. The whole purpose of the day is to recognize the sacrifices and hard work of mothers and to honor them with gifts and love.

The pilgrimage is performed by visiting a pond that is considered holy. It is done with the purpose of bringing peace to the soul of the mother. It is celebrated according to the position of the moon in the atmosphere.

Russia commemorates the selfless and heroic qualities of women. It is common to celebrate women’s day and Mother’s Day together in Russia. 8th March marks the contribution of women and is declared as a holiday by the government.

In Spain, Mother’s Day is celebrated not only by the children but by the entire family. Gifts are given to mothers by every member of the family. Children usually prepare the presents themselves or with the help of their class teachers.

In Spain, the month of May is attributed to Mother Mary. Mother’s Day is therefore celebrated on the first Sunday of May.

In the United States of America, mothers are honored with flowers. It has become a tradition to celebrate Mother’s Day by buying coloured carnations, cards, etc. People who have lost their mothers usually buy white carnations. It is also popular to visit a church on Mother’s Day.

The bond of a mother and her child is so special that it is cherished forever, by children and their mothers. One day is not enough to celebrate motherhood and we should make every day as special as Mother’s Day to shower our love upon our mothers. We should acknowledge all the little things that our mothers do for us every day. No other gift can be more special to a mother than her children’s love and respect. So let us pledge to make every day special for our mothers and fill her days with warmth and joy.

Every second Sunday of May, we celebrate Mother's Day , a special occasion dedicated to honouring the remarkable women who fill our lives with love and care. It's a day when we pause to recognise the often-overlooked contributions of mothers and express our heartfelt gratitude for all they do.

The origins of Mother's Day date back to 1908 in the United States . After the passing of her own mother in 1905, a woman named Anna Jarvis was inspired to create a day dedicated to honouring the tireless efforts and sacrifices of mothers everywhere. In May 1908, she organised the first official Mother's Day celebration in Grafton, West Virginia, laying the foundation for what would become a beloved annual tradition.

Mother's Day has since become a cherished tradition, observed on different dates depending on the country. However, no matter when it's celebrated, the sentiment remains the same: to show our appreciation for the unconditional love and care that mothers provide.

Mothers are extraordinary individuals who devote themselves to their families. They are our first teachers, guiding us through life's ups and downs with patience and wisdom. From the moment we are born, mothers nurture us, protect us, and teach us valuable lessons about kindness, compassion, and resilience.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Mother's Day is the opportunity it provides to express our gratitude. Whether through heartfelt words, handmade cards, or thoughtful gifts, we take this day to show our mothers just how much they mean to us. It's a chance to say "thank you" for all the sacrifices they've made and all the love they've given.

Mother's Day is also a time for reflection, a moment to pause and appreciate the unique bond between a mother and her child. It's a bond forged through countless shared moments, laughter, tears, and triumphs. No matter where life takes us, our mothers remain a constant source of love and support, cheering us on every step of the way.

For some, Mother's Day may be a bittersweet occasion, especially for those who have lost their mothers or who are unable to be with them. However, it's also a time to honour their memory and celebrate the legacy of love they left behind. Their presence may no longer be physical, but their influence and guidance continue to shape our lives in profound ways.

Beyond biological mothers, Mother's Day also celebrates all mother figures, including grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and guardians who play maternal roles in our lives. These women may not have given birth to us, but they have nurtured us with the same love and care as any mother would.

In addition to honouring individual mothers, Mother's Day is an opportunity to recognise the collective strength and resilience of mothers everywhere. Mothers are the backbone of families and communities, often juggling multiple roles and responsibilities with grace and determination. Their unwavering love and dedication enrich the lives of those around them, leaving an indelible mark on society as a whole.

As we celebrate Mother's Day, let us not forget to show our appreciation not just today, but every day. Let us cherish and honour the incredible women who have shaped us into the people we are today. And let us strive to emulate their love, compassion, and strength in everything we do.

The Influence of Sigmund Freud’s Theories on our of Maternal Bonds

This essay about Sigmund Freud’s theories explores the significant impact of maternal relationships on psychological development. It discusses Freud’s controversial Oedipus complex and broader psychosexual stages, emphasizing the deep emotional bond between mother and child. Freud’s insights suggest that the quality of early maternal attachment profoundly influences an individual’s ability to form relationships later in life. Additionally, the essay examines Freud’s views on the consequences of extreme maternal behaviors, such as overprotection or neglect, and their potential psychological repercussions. It also touches on how these early dynamics influence gender identity formation. Despite criticisms and the evolution of his theories, Freud’s ideas on motherhood continue to resonate within modern psychological and cultural contexts, shaping our understanding of the pivotal role mothers play in emotional and social development.

How it works

Sigmund Freud, a name synonymous with psychoanalysis, had quite a bit to say about the emotional entanglements between mothers and their children. His theories have stirred up discussions that ripple through not just the field of psychology, but also touch on everything from novels to parenting blogs. Let’s take a closer look at how Freud’s thoughts on motherhood still echo in today’s conversations about parenting and emotional development.

Freud introduced some head-turning ideas, among them the Oedipus complex, which suggests a child harbors deep, subconscious desires for the parent of the opposite sex while viewing the same-sex parent as a rival.

This notion, focusing particularly on boys’ feelings toward their mothers, sparked more than a few debates. While it’s a theory that has met its fair share of criticism, it points to something undeniable: the emotional depth of the mother-child relationship is profound and complicated.

Diving deeper, Freud argued that the mother is not just the first caregiver but also the first object of affection. This relationship, according to him, lays the foundation for all the relationships we form later. The quality and security of this initial attachment play a significant role in how we learn to connect with others as we grow. Freud’s insight here invites us to think about the lasting impact of our earliest interactions and how they shape our ability to foster relationships throughout life.

Freud didn’t stop there—he also looked at what happens when maternal care swings to the extremes, either too distant or too smothering. He suggested that these imbalances could lead to psychological challenges down the line, including issues with personal identity and emotional stability. His thoughts on this matter push us to consider how delicate the balance of parenting really is, with both neglect and overprotection carrying potential consequences.

His theories even extend into how we come to understand our own gender identities, with the mother playing a pivotal role in guiding the child through these early stages of identity formation. Freud’s reflections give us a window into how deeply our family dynamics can influence our perceptions of ourselves, including how we see our gender roles.

While the field of psychology has grown and many of Freud’s ideas have evolved or been challenged, the essence of his views—that our earliest relationships, particularly with our mothers, are crucial to our later psychological landscape—continues to influence modern psychology. Researchers and theorists build on his ideas, incorporating modern understandings from developmental and social psychology, but the basic premise that Freud laid down about the importance of maternal attachment remains influential.

Moreover, Freud’s theories have trickled into our cultural understanding of motherhood, influencing how society perceives and discusses the responsibilities of being a mom. His influence is evident in the ongoing cultural fascination with how parenting shapes us, a topic that’s as likely to appear in scientific journals as it is in pop culture critiques and parenting manuals.

In sum, Freud’s exploration of mother-child dynamics offers valuable insights into the complex interplay of early emotional bonds and their long-term effects on our psychological makeup. His work prompts us to consider the powerful role these early interactions play in shaping who we are. While modern psychology has moved on in many ways, Freud’s legacy in how we think about the psychological impact of motherhood is still very much alive, reminding us of the deep and lasting influence of those first few years.

I interviewed moms with 5 or more kids − here’s what I learned about the women who are quietly going against the grain

Commentators link America’s declining birth rate to a number of factors: a lack of support for mothers in the workplace, expensive child care , delayed marriage and a rising cost of living .

But what about women in the U.S. who, despite these obstacles, have bucked the trend and managed to have all the children they want?

I count myself in that camp: I have eight kids of my own. But I wanted to learn how other American women were able to reach their childbearing goals. So beginning in 2019, I decided to talk to some of the 5% of U.S. women who have five or more kids .

My recent book, “ Hannah’s Children: The Women Quietly Defying the Birth Dearth ,” is an account of what I learned.

The fertility gap

In April 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency that counts annual births in America, released its provisional estimate of the total babies born in 2023 .

At 1.62 expected children per woman – down from 3.8 in 1957 – the fertility rate is the lowest it’s been since the government started tracking it in the 1930s . Americans simply aren’t having enough children to replace themselves.

Studies have shown how, without enough immigration to offset the loss, this will cause the population to shrink , which in turn can lead to economic stagnation , political instability and social fragmentation . But falling birth rates go along with one more troubling pattern: the so-called “fertility-gap .”

The gap refers to the fact that women widely report having fewer children than they intended to have when they were younger. In the U.S., women say that about 2.5 kids is ideal, and that they realistically plan to have around 2.0 kids. They end up having 1.62, leaving a gap of about 0.4 to 0.9 kids.

This discrepancy exists mainly because women are getting married later than ever in history – near the age of 28 for the average American woman – which has moved back the median age of having their first child to 30 .

Despite the rosy rhetoric of influencers boosting child-free lives , this fertility gap can be a big deal – particularly for women.

Having children usually matters more to women’s happiness than to men’s , and women are generally more bothered by childlessness .

So, low birth rates aren’t just a crisis for societies and economies. They tell a deeply personal story about women failing to reach their goals for motherhood .

Bucking the trend

Motivated by these circumstances, I interviewed 55 women with five or more children who lived in all parts of the U.S., from the Pacific Northwest to the Carolinas to New England. Their homes were in a range of socioeconomic areas, including wealthy, middle class and low-income ZIP codes. Some of them worked full time, others were part-time employees, and some didn’t work at all. Their husbands held blue-collar jobs, white-collar jobs and everything in between.

What they had in common was religious faith – they belonged to Jewish, Catholic, Latter-day Saint, evangelical and mainline Protestant communities. They also tended to value having a big family above other things they could do with their time, talents and money.

One woman I spoke to, a mother of five named Leah, has no regrets about having a large family. (The names used in my book are pseudonyms in accordance with best practices and federal regulations for the protection of human subjects in academic research.)

“I think our culture really values the sort of very rigid perception of success, and has started to devalue a mother’s contribution to society,” she told me. “It’s almost, like, radical and feminist to say that my contribution is healthy, well-balanced children. Coming from a divorced family, that was a big motivation for me in choosing this life: the family unit being the priority above career and personal identity.”

The women bucking the trend weren’t necessarily wealthier and didn’t seem to face lower childbearing costs. Rather, they believed that children were blessings from God and the main purpose of their marriages. As Leah told me: “Every child brings a divine gift into the world that nobody else can bring.”

Most of them ended up having more children because they valued having a big family so highly. They didn’t plan their family sizes around other life goals – they planned other life goals around having children. And the very high accord they granted to childbearing ordered their priorities in ways that made it more likely for them to get married and have kids, even while meeting career and financial milestones.

Gains and losses

Prior to my study, it was known that women who have more children than average are more likely to go to church .

Less understood was why. Most churches today do not prohibit the use of contraception in marriage. None of the women in my sample reported having a large family because they believed family planning was wrong.

The economic theories of 1986 Nobel laureate James Buchanan helped me see the women I interviewed as rational actors like all other women – not as blind adherents to religious dogma.

According to Buchanan, people size up the gains and losses to the choices they make. Anything that adds value to one course of action tips the scale in favor of that choice. Incentives don’t have to be monetary. They can come from ideas and convictions, including religious values.

Conversely, anything that detracts value from a course of action makes it less likely. Disincentives can be monetary, like the price of a good. But the cost of missing out on other things can factor even more heavily.

Mom and five kids at the beach.

Tipping the scales

Whether the women I interviewed were rich or poor, they often cited the costs of missing out when they chose to have an additional child.

They gave up or put aside hobbies, professions, alone time and financial status – not to mention eight hours of sleep each night – when they decided to have more kids.

They didn’t report not valuing those things. They felt the sting of being misunderstood, overwhelmed and limited in their work options.

What stood out in the interviews was how much worth they accorded to having another child. They got to higher numbers of kids because they had something on the other side of the scale that weighed more than the losses.

A mom named Esther summed it up: “The three big blessings that we talk about in Judaism are children, good health and financial sustenance. I don’t feel like you could ever have too much of any of those things. These are blessings. They’re God’s expression of goodness.”

Clearing the way

Drawing on these insights, my interviews suggested how mothers in my sample managed to defy the country’s declining birth rate and fertility gap.

First, because having a big family mattered so much to them, they pursued marriage deliberately. They chose colleges, churches and social settings where others prioritized marriage, increasing the chances of finding a partner in time to have kids.

Second, they sought partners who also wanted high numbers of kids. One mom, a devout Catholic, told us she fell in love with a Protestant guy in college who wanted a big family. She had known what she wanted from her life partner.

Finally, the women overcoming the fertility gap adjusted their careers to fit their childbearing goals. They didn’t try to squeeze their kids around professional milestones. As such, they tended to select careers that were more flexible, such as teaching, nursing, graphic design or running a small business out of the home.

Though not all Americans share the religious convictions that tipped the scales for the women in my study, lessons from understanding their motivations may have tremendous value for the millions of young Americans aspiring to be mothers.

Marking Mother's Day after losing a child

How does one celebrate Mother’s Day after losing a child? I am still a mother to another son, a stepmother to three young men and their wives, a grandmother, and a daughter who has lost a mother but all that seems to be in the background. Only one role mattered that first year after my son’s death — being Adam’s mother.

At 4 years old, Adam announced he was going off to join the military. No adventure was too big for him. He wanted it all and in a hurry. He joined the U.S. Navy on his 17th birthday, graduated from high school, and left us.

Once caller ID became part of our lives, I could no longer ignore a call from “Restricted.” When I answered, I would usually hear “Hello, Mother” in his deepest, let-me-pretend-I’m-a-serious-grown-up voice. One Saturday afternoon in 2019, I got repeated calls from a number I didn’t recognize and ignored them, until I heard a woman’s voice speaking Spanish on the recording. Then I noticed country code 57 for Colombia, where Adam lived. I answered and heard his son Nico’s babysitter telling me that Adam was “muerto.” Dead.

Within minutes, a cascade of calls came from a Veterans Services officer, an officer from the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, a friend of Adam’s offering us a place to stay there, a friend overseas offering his condolences. News had spread around the world but I was still processing the words of that first gut-wrenching call. Everything was now forever changed.

This guest essay reflects the views of XXX

Adam was 37 when he died and had temporary custody of Nico, then 13 months old. My husband and I flew down the next day not knowing what to expect. Six months later, on my first Mother’s Day without Adam, we were still there, waiting for the government to resolve Nico’s custody case. That night, I looked up at the sky. As I did most nights, I imagined that I saw Adam looking down at me. Venus was out, burning brightly, so I believed my son did check in, but there would not be a call when I’d hear him say, “Hello, Mother.” This is the voice that I miss the most. The one that indicated he really thought he was too cool for a corny holiday like Mother’s Day but made the call anyway.

I have survived with the support and love of family, friends and prayer. They gave me comfort during the most difficult days. The most insane, endless, irrational mind-boggling days of confusing events and details. Days when nothing made sense in Spanish or English. Days with seemingly no distinction other than the X mark on the calendar. Days which lasted almost a year until the custody case was resolved, when Nico was placed back in his mother’s care and I assumed the distinguished title of “Abuela.” Grandma.

Today Nico is 5. I have a warm and loving relationship with Nico’s mother. I can hold Nico in my arms and see my Adam from years ago. I show him pictures of his dad; his favorites are the ones of him in a military uniform. When I look at Nico, I know we are moving forward, but memories of his father are planted firmly in my heart. It all ended too soon. His contract with his soul expired. Adam left us to watch over his boy, and with my every breath I will love this little guy.

Whenever I visit him, we look up at the stars at night. He believes his Papi is in “el cielo,” in heaven, so we blow kisses to him. I tell Nico to ask his daddy to take care of him. God speed, my sailor. I will love you forever, Mom.

Women at Work, and With Their Families Too

More from our inbox:, mythologizing trump, mentally ill and in prison, say no to more offshore drilling.

A black-and-white photo of three people hiking through a densely lush jungle, taken from behind.

To the Editor:

Re “ An Act of Defiance Can Improve Things for Working Moms ,” by Toby Kiers (Opinion guest essay, May 4):

I am a woman nearing the completion of my B.A. in philosophy, and I have the absurd hopes of going on to get my Ph.D. and work in academia and also have a family.

Dr. Kiers’s essay both shed light on the frustrating reality of the discrimination that mothers face in the world of academic research, and provided a shining beacon of hope to counteract it.

The false binary that women are presented and that so many people (including Dr. Kiers’s own child, she noted) assume is that we must decide: our research, our careers, our academic endeavors, or our children. One or the other.

Dr. Kiers has called this out; this is not actually a choice we have to make. Motherhood is not a detriment to our academic abilities and research contributions; it actually strengthens it in new and unexpected ways.

Dr. Kiers, in her refusal to choose between her research pursuits and her family, is helping to forge an exciting path forward. It is a path to a world where women can be celebrated, respected and supported with all that they are and all that they contribute, including their children.

That is the academic world I hope to enter into someday.

Megan Clancy Washington

Kudos to Dr. Toby Kiers! Her story is shared not only by fellow scientists, but by women at large. I admire her courage in bringing her 3-week-old son to work, and in pondering the advice of an older woman who discouraged her from being self-deprecating.

“What can feel like an inconvenience is often a blessing in disguise,” she writes. Amen to that! As far as detachment and vulnerability creating meaning? I now see vulnerability being valued and detachment being questioned in health care, via narrative prose and poetry by nurses and physicians.

I am a seasoned nurse. This article brought me back to the AIDS epidemic. In terms of science, we really had no idea what we were dealing with. I was on maternity leave and had come to know “brain fog” intimately. I received a call asking if I would open a new department for AIDS. After a day thinking about it, I accepted. My two boys went with me into the wilderness of men dying of a virus we knew little about.

My sons are now 40 and 50. The older one still recounts stories of things he learned and joy he felt at a party that those dying men held for us nurses on Mother’s Day. Vulnerability informing the work? You bet!

Pamela Mitchell Bend, Ore.

Since I am a woman who walked across the medical school graduation stage holding my toddler, while eight months pregnant with No. 2, I can certainly identify with Toby Kiers’s essay about managing a career as a scientist while parenting.

It was extremely trying for me to charge into residency with very small children at home. But I am blessed to have a wonderful husband who loved fathering, and was able to take a sabbatical for some of my residency.

As a result, our two daughters, now young adults, are very close to their father. I think that this is the real win in how things are evolving for women in the workplace. Partners get to join in on the nitty-gritty as well as the glorious moments of parenting.

I do believe I missed out on the sort of lovely parenting my mother gave me as a stay-at-home mom. But I was also able to show our daughters what commitment to an intellectual and humanistic goal looks like.

I certainly think medical residency programs are over the top in terms of workload and emotional toll; this needs to evolve. But I think enjoying the participation of both parents in the up-close-and-personal part of child-rearing makes all of our children stronger.

Re “ Trump Embraces Lawlessness in the Name of a Higher Law ,” by Matthew Schmitz (Opinion guest essay, April 4):

Mythologizing Donald Trump — either Mr. Schmitz fancifully comparing him to outlaws like Robin Hood, Billy the Kid and Jesse James, who titillated people with their challenges to authority, or Christian evangelicals’ even more far-fetched casting of Mr. Trump as King Cyrus or even Jesus — fails because most of us see him for what he is, a narcissist with no positive agenda and no respect for the law.

If we must make comparisons, it’s to David Duke, the Klansman who ran for president, or Gov. George Wallace, standing in the schoolhouse door to block integration. The only people who saw them as rebels with a cause were themselves defending a lost cause, much like those who flock to MAGA now.

Steve Horwitz Moraga, Calif.

Re “ Inmate’s Death Highlights Failures in Mental Health ” (front page, May 6), about the troubled life and death of a prisoner, Markus Johnson:

As a social worker who has worked in the field of mental health for more than 50 years, I read with interest and sadness yet another article about a mentally ill individual who was not provided with adequate treatment and subsequently died in prison.

This article highlights the failure of deinstitutionalization. It demonstrates how our prisons have become the institutions replacing those that formerly housed the mentally ill. Not only are the mentally ill being ill served, but so too is the public, which is at risk of harm from those hallucinating on the streets.

Our shelter system is also not in a position to manage needed services and supervision. The last resort is a cell. I believe that providing long-term residential programs with highly supervised step-down programs would provide a solution to the tragedies we currently read about daily. Certainly the cost would be less than incarceration.

Let’s look to providing real help rather than punishment for our mentally ill population.

“ Offshore Oil Production Expands as Companies Cite Energy Needs ” (Business, May 10) lays out Big Oil’s plan for the Gulf of Mexico. Let’s be real: We’re in a global climate crisis. The last thing we need is for the fossil fuel industry to expand offshore drilling.

If climate change, rising ocean temperatures and the risk of horrific events like the Deepwater Horizon disaster weren’t enough reason to stop offshore oil expansion, we also know that this industry cannot be counted on to clean up its mess when the wells have run dry.

There is a huge backlog when it comes to plugging defunct or abandoned wells, removing old oil platforms and remediating the seafloor damaged by drilling operations. Oil and gas companies have already littered the Gulf of Mexico with more than 18,000 miles of disused pipeline and over 14,000 unplugged wells , which can leak chemicals like methane into the ocean.

It also comes with financial risks: If offshore oil and gas operators file for bankruptcy (as 37 have done since 2009 ), U.S. taxpayers could be forced to foot the bill for cleanup.

Enough is enough: We cannot afford more offshore drilling.

Mother Earth Essay

Earth has many natural resources to help people live healthier lives. Mother Earth provides us with air, water, food and shelter. Writing a mother Earth essay helps children know the importance of protecting our planet.

Earth is a planet that hosts life and is inhabited by humans and other living beings. It is made out of rocks, metals, and gases. Earth is the only planet in our solar system where life can sustain and live on. Mother Earth is the third planet from the Sun and is home to more than seven billion people.

essay about mother for class 5

The Earth is a vital resource for life. We depend on it to grow plants, trees, and food. When we destroy the planet, we start destroying many things like the environment, our health and other things that help us survive. There are many ways to protect it, such as planting more trees, adopting a sustainable lifestyle etc.

The Earth is an amazing planet with various landscapes, ecosystems, and natural resources. It is essential to preserve them to ensure that future generations can enjoy the same unique beauty that we do now. To ensure this, it is crucial to have conservation programmes across the world. Environmental organisations have been around for decades, trying their best to protect the Earth’s biodiversity and promote environmental awareness.

Save Mother Earth

There are many ways to save this planet. Reducing our plastic consumption is one huge step that doesn’t require a lot of effort. By creating awareness about the consequences of our actions, we can save Mother Earth from global warming and other ecological problems.

The Earth is our home, and we should care for it. Our planet is precarious as a result of global warming, pollution, and a decreasing water level. It’s time to stop being complacent and take action.

Our planet is changing soon, and we need to act quickly. The best way to save Mother Earth is by reducing our carbon footprint. By setting sustainability goals and sticking to them, we can help make a difference in the planet’s health.

Another way to help save the planet is to reduce our carbon emissions. Governments around the world have already adopted various plans and laws to achieve this, but it is not easy.

Today, people are starting to realise their everyday actions that affect the Earth. They also recognise the need to start doing more responsible things to protect their future. Fortunately, there is a way for everyone to make a positive difference in the world: by adopting recycling and other eco-friendly strategies. While going green sounds difficult, it has become easier with advancements in today’s technology.
