Eclipse 2024: Time, best places to watch, latest weather forecast, ZIP code tool, what will you see?

T he Great North American eclipse is Monday, April 8 and skywatchers – with proper glasses, of course – are ready to see the moon blocking out the sun during a solar eclipse.

What you will see, how long it will last and when it will take place will depend on where you live. While all states in the contiguous U.S. will experience some level of the eclipse, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as small parts of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee are along the path of totality and will experience the greatest periods of darkness.

In the U.S., the path of totality will start in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CT and will end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. ET (2:25 CT.) In those states, the periods of greatest darkness will reach up to 4 minutes, 27 seconds.

Here’s everything you need to know about the total solar eclipse 2024:

2024 eclipse primer

Total solar eclipse on April 8: Why this eclipse will be much different than the 2017 version

Scientists say the sun is approaching its maximum activity of its cycle this year, meaning it will be sending off more solar flares and eruptions from its surface — potentially making this year’s total solar eclipse much more dynamic.

Best places to watch the eclipse

Total Solar Eclipse April 8: Map shows 15 best states to see April’s total solar eclipse

The path of totality will start in Mexico and move across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine before heading out over the North Atlantic. Small portions of Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee will also experience almost the entirety of the eclipse. The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.

Where to see solar eclipse 2024: NASA eclipse map shows best places along path of totality

During the eclipse, the sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of totality will be able to see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun, NASA explains. Outside the path of totality, viewers will see a partial eclipse with the moon covering varying degrees of the sun.

How much will you see where you live?

April 8 eclipse in Alabama: How much coverage you’ll see in your city and when

Although Alabama is not in the path of “totality” during the April 8 eclipse – meaning we won’t see total darkness when the moon covers the sun – residents will see from 78 to 92 percent coverage, depending on location.

Total solar eclipse path 2024: Search your city, ZIP code for best viewing times

People viewing the eclipse from the path of totality will be treated to the ghostly-white outer atmosphere of the sun, known as the corona, when the moon completely blocks out the sun’s disk during the total eclipse, NASA explained. Along the path, the sun will be blocked out for about 4-and-a-half minutes.

April 8 solar eclipse path of totality: What time does the eclipse start?

Wondering how much of the eclipse you will see? NASA has a tool that lets you search by city or ZIP code to see complete eclipse details. You can use this tool to see when the eclipse will start and end in every state.

Eclipse weather

Alabama solar eclipse weather: Will skies be cloudy or clear?

A big question, for a lot of the nation, is how clear the skies will be for prime eclipse viewing. An updated forecast from the National Weather Service looks like a mixed bag.

Eclipse education

Solar eclipse 2024 for kids: How to enjoy the event safely at home and in class

From building your own safety glasses to taking scientific data, researchers say there are plenty of ways to make the upcoming solar eclipse a fun learning experience for children.

Why are some schools closing for the solar eclipse?

The April 8 total solar eclipse will have millions of people gazing toward the sky as the moon tracks its way in front of the sun. And while some schools have special events planned, others – especially along the 15-state path of totality – are closing their doors that day.

Solar eclipse 2024: Where to get free glasses to watch April 8 total solar eclipse

Skygazers planning to look at the eclipse through a camera lens or binoculars still need adequate eye protection. Without proper precaution, the sun’s rays can burn your retinas and cause severe eye injury.

Solar eclipse is Monday: 7 things to do if you’re driving that day

Crowds eager to see the eclipse are expected to be huge. According to AAA, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio are the most popular cities for eclipse viewers, followed by Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo. In Dallas alone, Hertz rental car company said it is seeing six times more reservations than last year at this same time.

Solar eclipse on April 8 prompts cell phone warning

In addition to warnings about transportation systems, impacts on emergency service responses and fuel issues brought about increased demand, law enforcement said people should expect the cellular network to be strained.

How to spot fake solar eclipse glasses

Despite the ease of getting glasses, skygazers should be on the lookout for fake eclipse glasses. Real eclipse glasses are often designed with polyester film coated and coated in aluminum. Certified eclipse eyewear is designed to block all visible, and infrared light. Solar eclipse glasses must be from a vendor approved by the American Astronomical Society.

FAA issues warning ahead of April 8 total solar eclipse

The Federal Aviation Administration has issued a warning about possible travel disruptions related to the April 8 total solar eclipse.

Cell phone warning for April 8 solar eclipse: Will you be able to use your phone?

Warnings about traffic, flight congestion and emergency services are circulating ahead of the April 8 Great American Eclipse. Of particular note are concerns over cell phones and whether they will work during the eclipse.

April 8 total solar eclipse: Texas officials warn people to stock up on food ahead of solar eclipse

Mike Jones, Hays County, Texas’s direct of the Office of Emergency Services, said the area is expecting thousands of visitors to arrive to see the eclipse. To prepare for the crowds, Jones advised residents to stock up on groceries and fill up on gas. If they are out on the day of the eclipse, he recommends residents “pack your patience.”

National Guard will be deployed for total solar eclipse on April 8

At the request of local emergency management officials, the Oklahoma National Guard will have members of the 63rd Civil Support Team available to assist local governments during the eclipse, including working with first responders with additional HAZMAT responses if needed.

Total solar eclipse on April 8: How to safely look at an eclipse

Except during the brief total phase of the eclipse when the moon completely blocks the sun’s bright face, it’s not safe to look at the eclipse without specialized eye protection for solar viewing, NASA said on its eclipse information page. If you’re watching the eclipse directly, you will need solar viewing glasses – also known as eclipse glasses – or a handheld solar viewer.

The nine best bets to win this year’s Masters

coursework tool 6

The PGA Tour schedule so far this season has been ruled by long shots. Take away Scottie Scheffler’s two victories in 2024, and the tournament winners have mainly come out of nowhere.

That trend is unlikely to continue this week at the Masters , where surprise winners are rare. Yes, you’ll occasionally see triumphant golfers such as 60-to-1 long shot Danny Willett in 2016 or 40-to-1 Hideki Matsuyama in 2021, but most Masters champions follow the same criteria: They have good history at Augusta National, good form entering the tournament and good standing in certain key metrics.

While it’s hard to judge the form of the 13 LIV golfers in the field because they play less often and in less-challenging fields, we have a pretty good sense of what a Masters winner should look like:

He’s good at Augusta National: According to Datagolf, course history is far more predictive at Augusta National than at any other course in the PGA Tour rotation. Nine of the past 14 winners (and 13 of the past 18) had a previous green jacket or a top-10 Masters finish.

He’s not a Masters rookie or an amateur: Only three players have won the Masters in their first appearance at the tournament, the last being Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979. I won’t be considering the following Augusta National first-timers: Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Eric Cole, Nick Dunlap, Austin Eckroat, Ryo Hisatsune, Lee Hodges, Nicolai Hojgaard, Jake Knapp, Peter Malnati, Denny McCarthy, Grayson Murray, Matthieu Pavon, Adam Schenk and Stephan Jaeger. Plus, no amateur has won the Masters, and there are five in this year’s field: Santiago de la Fuente, Stewart Hagestad, Christo Lamprecht, Neal Shipley and Jasper Stubbs. In terms of picks to win, you can ignore them.

He’s highly ranked: Of the past 24 Masters winners, 17 entered the tournament in the top 12 of the Official World Golf Ranking, and 22 were in the top 30. But because the OWGR does not award ranking points to LIV golfers , who have plummeted down the rankings board, this trend has become a bit dicey. LIV’s Brooks Koepka had at least a share of the lead for the first three rounds at last year’s Masters before he fell apart on Sunday.

He’s in good form: Of the past 13 Masters champions, only Matsuyama in 2021 did not have at least two top-12 stroke-play finishes in the calendar year of the tournament, either on the PGA Tour or the European Tour. These golfers haven’t exactly been tearing it up this year (or are well past their primes), and they’re off my list: Fred Couples, Rickie Fowler, Ryan Fox, Lucas Glover, Sungjae Im, Zach Johnson, Tom Kim, Kurt Kitayama, Min Woo Lee, Luke List, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa, José María Olazábal, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose, Charl Schwartzel, Vijay Singh, Sepp Straka, Camilo Villegas, Bubba Watson, Mike Weir, Willett, Gary Woodland and Tiger Woods.

He’s good on par-4s: Of the past 11 Masters champions, nine ranked first, second or third in the field in par-4 scoring during the tournament. Nine of the past 12 winners also entered the tournament ranked 11th or better in the PGA Tour’s par-4 birdie-or-better statistic . Rory McIlroy, for instance, ranks 70th in par-4 scoring and 72nd in par-4 birdie-or-better this season, and I won’t be betting him to end his Masters jinx this week. Other golfers who aren’t attacking par-4s this season include Cam Davis and Will Zalatoris (though the latter is tempting because of his strong Augusta National history).

He’s not the defending champion: Only three players since 1960 have won back-to-back Masters — Jack Nicklaus in 1965-66, Nick Faldo in 1989-90 and Tiger Woods in 2001-02. Since 2002, only Woods (2006) and Jordan Spieth (2016) have finished in the top five as the defending champion. Three of the past seven defending champions have missed the cut, and none of those seven finished better than Scheffler’s 10th last year. That means I won’t be betting Jon Rahm, last year’s winner , to repeat.

He didn’t win the week before: The last player to win the tournament immediately preceding the Masters and then win the green jacket was Phil Mickelson in 2006. Since then, only two golfers (Anthony Kim in 2010 and Spieth in 2021) have won the week before and then finished in the top 10 at Augusta. Akshay Bhatia, who just won the Texas Open , will not be on my card.

Now that we’ve eliminated 49 golfers from the field of 89, let’s take a look at a few who can actually win. Odds are as of Tuesday morning at DraftKings Sportsbook :

Scottie Scheffler (+450)

Betting Scheffler at any tournament these days means accepting preposterously low odds, and the Masters is no different. The champion from two years ago and the OWGR No. 1 is again the favorite, for ample reasons. Scheffler has won two of his past three tournaments and was a missed six-footer away from forcing a playoff at the Houston Open two weekends ago. His worst finish this calendar year was a tie for 17th at the American Express; he has been in the top 10 in his seven other tournaments. The knock on Scheffler has always been his putting, but he has gained strokes on the greens in five of his past six tournaments after an equipment change. He’s first on the PGA Tour in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better. What’s not to like here, other than the low odds?

Xander Schauffele (+1400)

Schauffele is probably the best player without a major championship (though he does have an Olympic gold medal ), and you have to think he’s about due: The world’s fifth-ranked player has far more top-10s (11) than missed cuts (three) in his 26 major appearances. Three of those top-10s came at Augusta National. Schauffele, who has finished T-5 or better in three of his past four tournaments, trails only Scheffler in par-4 scoring this season and is tied for 17th in par-4 birdie-or-better. And how about this from Kyle Porter of CBS Sports ? Nine of the past 11 Masters winners had gained at least 1.7 strokes tee to green per round in the three months leading into the tournament. Only two PGA Tour golfers fit that bill this year: Scheffler and Schauffele.

Hideki Matsuyama (+2000)

Matsuyama already has a green jacket as the 2021 champion. He also has some blinding form, with a win in February at Riviera (a good course comparison to Augusta National), followed by a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a tie for sixth at the Players Championship (two tournaments with elite fields), plus a tie for seventh last weekend in Texas. Matsuyama is one of three golfers in the field to finish at least in the top 25 in each of the past four Masters — Scheffler and Shane Lowry are the others — and he can’t be overlooked.

Joaquín Niemann (+2800)

I think Niemann has one of the better shots out of all the LIV golfers because he comes in with white-hot form: three wins and four top-fives since November, with one of those victories in a full-field DP World Tour event. (LIV golfers can play on the European tour.) He’s also one of only two LIV golfers to average at least two strokes gained per round this season. (Rahm is the other; Dustin Johnson — No. 3 on that list — is well behind both at 1.54 strokes gained per round.) Niemann’s best finish at Augusta National is a tie for 16th last year, but he has made the cut each of the past three years.

Tony Finau (+4000)

Every year, it seems, golf fans get talked into considering Finau at the Masters, and every year he seems to do just okay: He has never missed the cut in six Augusta National appearances, with three top-10s. This year, the world’s 26th-ranked player has missed just one cut in PGA Tour play and tied for second at the Houston Open, his most recent event. Finau can be a little wild off the tee, but that shortcoming is negated a bit at Augusta National because the rough isn’t very penal, and Finau shines at courses with short rough .

Shane Lowry (+6000)

The 2019 British Open champion has been picking up steam as the season has worn on, with a tie for fourth at the Cognizant and a solo third the next week at the Arnold Palmer. Lowry has finished no worse than a tie for 25th in his past four Augusta National appearances and tied for third two years ago. He’s top-20 in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better this season.

Sahith Theegala (+5000)

The 26-year-old has played in only one Masters, but it was a ninth-place finish at last year’s tournament. This year, the world No. 15 has four top-10 finishes, with three of them coming over his past five events. Theegala is a respectable 24th in par-4 scoring and 31st in par-4 birdie-or-better.

Cameron Young (+5000)

Young is coming off a tie for seventh at last year’s Masters, has four top-10s this year and is respectable enough on par-4s (12th in par-4 birdie or better, 31st in par-4 scoring). And while Young has yet to win on the PGA Tour, he has four top-10s in major tournaments, including a tie for eighth at last year’s British Open. A win is coming, and it could be at Augusta National.

Jason Day (+6500)

The Aussie, ranked 21st, has the 2015 PGA Championship title on his résumé, and he has finished in second place in each of the other three majors, most recently at last year’s British Open. Day’s recent Masters form has been spotty (two missed cuts and a tie for 39th in his past three visits), but he has four Augusta National top-10s in his career. This season, Day has posted three top-10s and ranks in the top 10 in par-4 scoring and par-4 birdie-or-better.

Leading the 6-Generation Workforce

  • Nicholas Pearce

coursework tool 6

This unprecedented age span, from the Silent Generation to Gen Alpha, offers unique opportunities for inclusion and impact.

Giving each generation — and, importantly, each individual — the opportunity to be seen, understood, valued, and leveraged in the workplace throughout the course of their career is essential for personal, social, and even societal well-being. This author offers five steps leaders can take to create healthy six-generation organizations.

For the first time in history, many workplaces span six generations: from the octogenarians of the Silent Generation who are still working — and in many cases still holding onto key global leadership roles — to the teenagers of the emerging Generation Alpha who are eagerly pursuing their first summer jobs and high school internships. In between are the Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y (often called the Millennials), and Generation Z.

The First Look: Masters Tournament

The First Look

Change Text Size

It's time for the first major championship of the PGA TOUR season.

Augusta National is primed and ready for the 2024 Masters Tournament after a fabulous finish to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the wonderful Drive, Chip & Putt National Final.

Scottie Scheffler recently added a second PLAYERS Championship to his resume. Can the defending champ do the same at the Masters? He is the unquestioned No. 1 player in the world right now, but he will have plenty of challengers.

Here's everything you need to know as the TOUR returns to Augusta.

NOTABLE INVITES AND AMATEURS: Fred Ridley, the chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters, extended three special invitations for 2024 to Denmark’s Thorbjørn Olesen , Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune and Chile’s Joaquin Niemann . Olesen, who holds dual DP World Tour and PGA TOUR membership, has won three years in a row on the DP World Tour and finished T6 in his Masters debut in 2013. Hisatsune was last year’s Rookie of the Year on the DP World Tour and has made seven of 10 cuts on the PGA TOUR this season. This will be his Masters debut. Niemann will be playing his fifth Masters… World No. 1 amateur Christo Lamprecht of South Africa headlines the amateur contingent. Lamprecht, who is in the field as the reigning British Amateur champion, made headlines by holding the first-round lead at The Open. Lamprecht also is No. 2 in PGA TOUR University. The other amateurs in the Masters are Santiago de la Fuente of Mexico (the Latin America Amateur Championship winner), Neal Shipley of the United States (U.S. Amateur finalist), Australia’s Jasper Stubbs (Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship winner) and Stewart Hagestad (U.S. Mid-Amateur champion). All of the amateurs except Hagestad are making their Masters debut. Hagestad is playing for a third time; he was the low amateur in 2017.

SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: The Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 for the RBC Heritage will be finalized this week. Though the Masters does not count towards the Aon Swing 5, it could change if Peter Malnati or Thomas Detry are bumped from the Aon Next 10 this week. Malnati and Detry would move into the Aon Swing 5 if they fall out of the Aon Next 10. Click here for the full standings.

COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: Ludvig Åberg and Chris Kirk swapped spots in the TOUR TOP 10 after the Valero Texas Open, with Aberg now at No. 8 and Kirk at No. 9. The rest of the TOUR TOP 10 remained the same… Akshay Bhatia jumped from No. 55 to No. 12 in the standings after his victory and is within shouting distance of the TOUR TOP 10 for the first time… Denny McCarthy , who Bhatia topped in a playoff in San Antonio, moved from No. 85 to No. 19.

FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 750 FedExCup points.

COURSE: Augusta National Golf Club, par 72, 7,555 yards. After multiple changes in 2022 and 2023, there was just one update for 2024, as the par-5 second was lengthened by 10 yards. Over the past three Masters, the second hole played as the easiest each year.

Rory McIlroy, in his pre-tournament press conference at the Valero Texas Open, also mentioned there were changes to the greens on Nos. 2, 4 and 6.

“There's like a back middle hole location on two, there's a slightly bigger area in there where they can sort of move that around a little bit," he said. "On four they've sort of made the back right section a little bit bigger for an extra pin position there. And then six is different, like the top right plateau is definitely bigger and then they've flattened out a section in the back left to maybe have an extra hole location there, too."

72-HOLE RECORD: 268, Dustin Johnson (2020)

18-HOLE RECORD: 63, Nick Price (third round, 1986) and Greg Norman (first round, 1996)

LAST TIME: Jon Rahm won the green jacket in a come-from-behind triumph on a marathon final day at Augusta National. Rahm was four shots back of the leader, Brooks Koepka, to start Sunday and had to play 30 holes due to weather knocking out much of Saturday’s third round. Rahm shot a final-round 69 to win by four over Koepka and Phil Mickelson. Jordan Spieth and Russell Henley finished tied for fourth, along with Patrick Reed.

Galaxy Z Fold 6’s Budget Alternative

Expectations are high that Samsung will launch a cheaper “Fan Edition” alongside the vanilla Galaxy Z Fold 6 at this summer’s Galaxy Unpacked event. To do so, several specifications will need to be dropped or cut back to cheaper alternatives. Details this week suggest that one of the key decisions has been made:

"The latest details around Samsung’s expansion of the Galaxy Z Fold pick out one area where Samsung could make a saving. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE is listed with an Exynos chipset, Samsung’s homegrown alternative to the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. The Galaxy S24 family use a mix of Exynos and Snapdragon across the three key models, and the expectation of an Exynos chipset in a Fan Edition was recently reinforced with December’s Galaxy S23 FE.

The download weighs in at around 800MB to 1GB in size, depending on region, and comes bundled with Google’s April 1 2024 security patch—meaning Samsung’s flagship smartphones are receiving it before Google’s own Pixel devices."

Google's Find My Network Ready For Launch

Following the announcement at I/O last year, Google is finally ready to turn on its geolocation service “Find My Device:"

"In a message hitting select user inboxes, Google specifically notes that the network will be turned on in just three days, technically making its launch April 7 (Sunday). However, we’re all assuming it will take place on Monday, April 8.

OnePlus’ "Magic Eraser” Arrives

OnePlus has updated its latest handsets with a new AI-based feature that easily removes unwanted elements in a picture. It's powered by generative AI, and is available now on the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R, with other handsets to follow:

"The AI Eraser feature on Oxygen OS on OnePlus smartphones is powered by OPPO’s AndesGPT generative AI model. It is not run on-device, and thus, you need an active internet connection to make any generative AI edits as your images are uploaded to a server. The edits can be made on any photo, as I did with pictures from my recent trip to Singapore that were shot on a different phone."

Is It Time For Pixel Tablet 2?

Will a Pixel Tablet 2 launch at Google’s I/O Developer Conference? Last year, the first Pixel was introduced in tablet form, and it became part of a new wave of Android tablets from various manufacturers. Carrying on that visible support would be a smart move, just as it was last year:

“…Google’s partners saw an ongoing commitment to tablets and large-screened Android devices. The Pixel Tablet hardware followed more software support in Android for the form factor. 2023 saw several Android manufacturers launch their first tablets while others offered new tablet designs to consumers. No doubt the signals from Google during 2021 and 2022 helped that decision-making process,"

And Finally...

Samsung has overtaken Apple to reclaim the title of "World’s Largest Smartphone Retailer” from Apple, in part due to the commercial success of the Galaxy S24 family. Details from Counterpoint Research show a 2.5 million lead in handset sales"

"In February, Samsung sold 19.69 million smartphones, capturing a 20 percent market share, beating Apple, which sold 17.41 million phones for an 18 percent share, according to data from market researcher Counterpoint Research.

6 Insiders Tell You What They Love to Do in Switzerland

Watch industry executives and creators recommend Brutalist architecture, wrestling festivals and, of course, where to get the best fondue.

A view of a pool, with a handrail leading into the water, in a large empty space. The walls have a gray horizontal pattern and there are what look like small blue squares of light in the ceiling.

By Anders Modig Davin

Reporting from Basel, Switzerland

Where are the best places to go in Switzerland?

The New York Times recently posed that question to six executives and creators in the Swiss watch industry — and got a raft of insider tips that included Brutalist architecture, wrestling festivals, vineyards, Wes Anderson-esque trains and, of course, where to get the best fondue.

The interviews have been edited and condensed.

Maximilian Büsser

Owner and creative director of MB&F Watches, 57

Rent a car and drive around for four or five days in summer. I love Therme Vals in Graubünden by Peter Zumthor. It is these incredible baths all made of locally quarried Vals quartzite slabs, which feel like black granite. This is really off the beaten track; a valley in the middle of nowhere amongst mountains and forests. Zumthor is this insanely creative Swiss architect, and for me, who loves things that are different and have strong character, Therme Vals is just one of the most amazing places.

I was lucky when I was there with my wife 11 years ago, as there was an Alphorn concert inside the baths. Lying in these chambers filled with naturally hot water, with the horns resounding everywhere — I still get goose bumps when I think about it!

As you have a car, I would also say to bring your hiking boots and go hiking in the incredibly green hills around Appenzell — this landscape in northeast Switzerland reminds me of Iceland. Stop in Solothurn where the little river in the middle of the Old Town turns into a kind of carnival in summer, with people passing by on all sorts of weird floating contraptions; stay in the beautiful Chenot Palace in Weggis, where the mountains meet Lake Lucerne; head for La Tour de Gourze, a little house where you can have a fondue with breathtaking views over Lac Léman [Lake Geneva]; drive along the legendary hairpins of the Furka Pass into Andermatt.

And don’t miss Zurich, where you should, if you like Brutalism, stay at the B2 Hotel , a conversion of an old brewery.

Audrey Raffy

Vice president at Bovet, 31

I do love hiking, and one of my favorites is to walk through the UNESCO Heritage-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces between Lausanne and Montreux. I love the mix of the leafy vineyards and the lake below and the gray rock of the Alps across the lake.

Depending on the season you have completely different sceneries: pink flowers in the spring, super green foliage in summer and fiery orange, red and yellow in the autumn. I normally take the train to Cully, and then walk all the way to Montreux, which takes around three hours.

Along the way you can find places where you can brunch — and of course, you can sample great wines! The Chasselas grape is typical for the region and one of my favorites in Switzerland. It has got a beautiful, fresh, light kind of mineral taste. It is perfect for an apéro, which is a French word for the fantastic moment before dinner when you have a drink and something to snack on together with friends and family.

The Belle Epoque train is part of the Golden Pass route in Switzerland between Montreux and Zweisimmen. Some travelers liken it to the Orient Express.

Jasmine Vidal

Communications consultant on jewelry, watches and wellness, 49

I absolutely love getting people who come to visit here in Switzerland onto the GoldenPass Belle Epoque train from Montreux up to Gstaad. The three-hour train going up the mountain from the lake is just magical. Velvety turquoise seats, dark wood paneling, golden brass details and purple floors — it is like a mini Orient Express that feels like a Wes Anderson movie! When you go up, you want to sit on the right side for the best views.

When you arrive in Gstaad, you are up for a truly Swiss experience. Sure, it is a superluxury resort with Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Graff shops, but it is still authentic. And it is not a show-off place.

When I go with my family, we normally pick up the best dairy produce from a little refrigerator at an egg farm with a trust cash box on the edge of town, before we head to the Sportzentrum Gstaad. This is a beautiful high-ceilinged timber construction with heated indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

And don’t miss Cadonau Papeterie on the promenade, the little shop where all the celebrities go to buy stationery. This is just around the corner from Mango on Viktoriastrasse, a tiny little Indian joint screening Bollywood videos filmed in Gstaad with stars like Shah Rukh Khan. Bollywood has come here for years to make films, and you can also make a Bollywood tour in the valley to visit the locations.

Laurence Bodenmann

Heritage director at Zenith, 41

The best places to visit in Switzerland are the museums. There is an incredible, super-dense network of 1,081 museums scattered all over Switzerland, a country of 8.7 million people.

To pick a few I would say the M.I.H., the international horology museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds, where you can travel through the development of the art of watchmaking. As a visitor, I would also contact workshops to see the art in action — for instance, François Junod , who took the art of moving figures known as automatons into the 21st century, and to discover how watches are made today you can contact the tourist office to organize a visit to the Zenith manufacturer in Le Locle.

This is the thing: The history of Switzerland is completely alive today, and not only when it comes to mechanical innovations. I have rediscovered Switzerland by going to local pop-rock music festivals and traditional wrestling competitions in the villages. When you eat a sausage or a fondue in such a context you really feel like you can start to grasp people’s perspectives.

If you want to stay in style after such local experiences, I recommend the five-star Hôtel Palafitte , which is built on stilts on Lake Neuchâtel. It’s so cool and unique, and it is also a historical experience: The Latians, who lived here between 4,400 B.C. and 750 B.C. also had their houses on stilts, and these were called palafitte.

Pierre Biver

General director of Biver, 24

Geneva is a perfect place for a city break! It is not too big and not too small, so you can do a lot in just a couple of days, and just about everything is in walking distance.

On the luxurious side you have all the watchmaking boutiques along the Rue du Rhône, and great classical hotels overlooking the lake and the fountain, the Jet d’Eau — like the Four Seasons des Bergues , which opened in 1834, or the Woodward hotel , which also houses the restaurant L’Atelier Robuchon by the legendary chef Joël Robuchon.

Great restaurants in all different ranges are scattered all over the city and two of my favorites are the Auberge d’Onex which has amazing Italian food in the former clubhouse of Geneva’s first golf course, and the tiny and casual Nagomi , which serves the best sushi and tempura, in the Pâquis area.

Such high-end aspects of Geneva are famous, but not everybody knows that the city has a great urban feel with a lot of hipsters. In summer, the parks are full of Genevan people having a picnic or a drink after work, and there are often open-air concerts. And the non-mainstream, more secret cafe scene is great. Mame cafe in Plainpalais and in St.-Gervais serve very fine filter and espresso coffee, and its baristas have been named Switzerland’s best five times.

Rolf Studer

Co-chief executive at Oris, 52

For me, the best place to go in Switzerland is the alpine region of my ancestors: Entlebuch, and the village of Flühli, where my grandfather built a house which is my second home.

This far-out place is a UNESCO biosphere region with deep forests and high mountains — great for skiing, hiking and mountain biking. It’s wild there! It looks a bit like Canada, but you are in fact not so far away from civilization; it is only a 45-minute drive from Lucerne. The people of this region are predominantly farmers who are very earthy and not polished, but in the best way: authentic, open, down to earth and no blah blah.

The best food in Entlebuch you get in the restaurant of Wiesner Mysterion , where Stefan Wiesner, known as the Sorcerer of Entlebuch , performs, as they put it in Guide Michelin, “culinary wizardry” on stones and big rings of fire. He also has cooking schools, by the way.

The Hotel Kurhaus in Flühli has been where travelers rest since 1899, a classic hotel that has been continuously upgraded and today combines luxury with soothing natural surroundings. Eight kilometers from the hotel is the Genossenschaft Flühli Wasser, in the forest at the foot of the Schwändelifluh mountain. Here you can rejuvenate with cold baths and textural experiences in accordance with the Kneipp principles of water, plants, movement, nourishment and balance.

But again, the best luxury to me of this region is to meet people who are still grounded. It grounds me, puts things in perspective and makes me smile.
