15 Fantastic Author Websites To Inspire You

If you’re an author — or on your way to becoming one — you’ve probably heard a lot about author websites and the importance of a stable online presence.

After all, you can’t assume that your presence on other platforms — Amazon, social media, other people’s blogs — is going to last.

And a well-designed and regularly updated website does more for your author brand than any of these.

But what does your author website really need to have?

If only you had a selection of writers websites to look through to help you decide what features you want to focus on, what first impressions you want your readers to get, and what on earth you’re going to blog about to keep your readers interested.

Welcome to Authority.pub!

We’ve been where you are now. Read on to explore 15 fantastic author website examples.

Why Authors Need A Website Platform

1. stephen guise, 2. marc & angel hack life, 3. meera kothand, 4. honoree corder, 5. patrick king consulting.

  • 6. Zoe Mckey

7. Barbara Markway, PhD

8. quiet revolution — with susan cain, 9. jocelyn k. glei, 10. art of productivity with damon zahariades, 11. sally ann miller, 12. annie f. downs, 13. hal elrod, 14. develop good habits with steve (s.j.) scott, 15. live bold & bloom with barrie davenport.

If you’re an author hoping to get the word out on your books, to sell more copies , and to build on them to grow your author business and create other passive income streams, an author website is essential. Consider the following reasons:

  • To build a fanbase of people excited about your books
  • To establish your credibility and expertise as an author
  • To connect with your readers
  • To remain up-to-date and competitive in a growing pool of published authors
  • To receive valuable feedback from your readers
  • To provide content for future books and book-related projects

Don’t make the mistake of leaving your author cred in the hands of Amazon or your social media accounts. And if you’re looking to build an email list of devoted readers (and you should), an online hub is critical to your success.

15 Best Author Websites for 2021

The first thing you’ll see when you check out Stephen Guise’s website is a chance to download — for free — his “best content,” which includes a sampling of his ebook, Mini Habits ; his ebook, Stress Management Redefined ; a Focus Wallpaper set; and his Tuesday newsletter.

His site also has a blog and a page titled, “Living Smarter,” where you can sign up to receive his free content on living a less stressful and more meaningful life.

Marc and Angel Chernoff have created a website that not only advertises their book, Getting Back to Happy , but also offers a life-changing course based on that book. They also blog on topics related to their mission of helping their readers live happier more fulfilling lives.

Forbes magazine has recognized this site as “one of the most popular personal development blogs.” Check it out and see a perfect example of what mission plus passion plus writing skills could do for your author website.

The free courses alone are worth the visit, especially if you’re still a newbie to email marketing, blogging, or product development. Meera’s “Start Here” page introduces you to someone who remembers what it’s like to be a newbie but who has learned what authors need to know to build a successful online platform.

Her site also introduces you to her books, which are well-designed and thoughtfully created to serve her mission of helping fellow online business owners grow and thrive.

Honoree Corder writes books to help her fellow creatives go from starving artists to prosperous authors with life-changing businesses. Her layout is simple, with a smiling photograph just below the header, and it gets right to the point of what she offers. A pop-up window offers a free sample of her book, You Must Write a Book.

Her site offers personalized author coaching and detailed information on her “Empire Builders Mastermind,” as well as on her books and her You Must Write a Book Live Coaching Course. If you’re an author and want to grow your business, you’ll find ideas here on how to do that.

The first thing you see on Patrick King’s site is a chance to sign up for his free cheat sheet on 7 steps to effortless and engaging conversation (even if you’re a “paralyzed social recluse”).

As the author of The Art of Witty Banter and Bulletproof Confidence (among many others), Patrick leads with his free content and social proof (links and testimonials) and leads you to two options: “Read the Blog” and “Get my newest book.” Try both to get the full experience and learn what you can about how to make the most of this website model.

6. Z oe Mckey

If all you really want to do is display your books and offer visitors a chance to download a freebie (in exchange for their email address), Zoe Mckey gives a good example of this on her author site. At first glance, you see a landing page offering you a “Free Unbreakable Confidence Checklist” and “Daily Makeover Cheatsheet.”

Scroll down to see a line-up of her books and a link to see more information on each one. Click on that link to check out her online “bookshop” for ideas on how to set up your own.

At the top of Dr. Markway’s site, you see a banner ad for her “Self-Confidence Workbook.” As you scroll down, you see a warm, personal message from her to her visitors, followed by information about her and her practice, followed by social proof and a chance to sign up for her newsletter.

Her book page displays her published content to advantage, advertising the fact that she’s sold over 100,000 copies and making it easy for visitors to buy her books on Amazon.

Her blog covers related content, displaying each post as an excerpt with a relevant image against a clean, white background. You don’t see any ads on this website.

Susan Cain is the author of Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking , and this site explores the revolution her work has started. It also introduces her readers to her blog and podcast , along with free resources for parents, schools, and businesses.

man on iPad table author websites

The first thing you see here is a calming image with a Q like the one you’ll see on the cover of her most well-known book. Once you scroll down, the image fades to reveal her website’s calming minimalist layout. At the top, on the right-hand side, you’ll see an invitation to join her newsletter. Below, you’ll see links to free resources, Susan’s keynote talks, and a personality test: “Are you an introvert or an extrovert?”

This website for the author of Unsubscribe begins with a question: “Do you want to find more creativity and meaning in your daily work?” Your answer to that question determines whether you’ll sign up for her newsletter and read on to explore her RESET course, her Hurry Slowly podcast, and her articles.

Glei’s mission is to help others choose a heart-centered approach to their work and to productivity. The layout is clean and minimalist with large, readable type.

One of the first things you’ll see here is an ad on the right-hand side offering a free 40-page book, Catapult Your Productivity , to new subscribers, which is an immediate eye-grabber.

Among the menu headings, you’ll see “Free Gift,” “Start Here,” and “My Books” — in that order. Within seconds of clicking on “Start Here,” you see a large pop-up inviting you to subscribe in order to receive a free copy of the same book advertised on the home page.

This is the third time you’ll be tempted with the free offer, and since the pop-up hides the page content, there’s nothing to distract you from typing in your name and email address, if the book looks like something you’d want to read.

If this approach works on you, it might work on your website visitors, too.

With its calming color scheme and crisp, white background, Sally Ann Miller leads the eye of her visitor from her logo to the words “Proft from Your Passion” and a pitch for her free “Passion Challenge workbook.”

She makes her mission obvious: help her readers make money from home doing what they love — including this message in her brief “About” blurb and then repeating it in a large quote block.

Her “Books” page displays all her published content on Amazon and Audible, providing links to make it easy for visitors to buy them. Her “Courses” page lists her own course, Author Success Blueprint , at the top, with a link that takes you to a great example of a course sales page.

With a large smiling photograph, Annie first introduces you to herself — as a best-selling author, nationally-known speaker, podcast host, and loud laughter.

Scrolling down, you see a line-up of her books, (all linking to her “Books” page), then the four most-recent That Sounds Fun podcast episodes, followed by a series of images from her Instagram timeline.

Her “About” page describes and links to each category of her content — books, public speaking, and podcast episodes — while also giving you a glimpse into her background, priorities, and personality.

If you want some pointers on how to design a website that will get your visitors excited about your content and message, check out Hal Elrod’s.

The energy on this site is contagious, and it begins with a video, the offer of free access to his “Miracle Morning Crash Course,” and his clearly-stated mission of “Waking people up to their full potential.”

Just below that, you’ll see an uncluttered advertisement for his life-changing book, The Miracle Morning . From there, you can scroll down to learn about the next Best Year Ever Blueprint (BYEB) experience, sign up to have Hal speak at your next event, or enjoy one of his podcast episodes.

Steve Scott is a great example of a prolific and versatile author whose blog content led to book ideas that sold well.

On this site, you’ll see a variety of blog posts related to his books on healthy habits, with large, readable type and a right-hand column that lists previous posts and advertises other content — including a free book, The Morning Routine for Peak Performance.

The sharing buttons on the left make it easy to share his content in a variety of ways, and while the Google Ads do take up some space, they also help the author earn some passive income.

The menu headings for Barrie Davenport’s blog focus on the topics she covers, rather than the typical page selections. Her final menu item, “Free Gifts,” is tantalizing, but it serves as more than click-bait.

The free ebooks offered on this page make it clear how the author wants to improve the lives of her readers. She offers “5 Free Motivating Guides” focused on personal growth, powerful habits, and loving relationships.

On the right-hand side of her main page, you’ll see a listing of her most popular blog posts — as well as the most recent — and Google Ads for relevant business services.

At the bottom of the home page, you’ll find links to her catalog of self-improvement books and her various online courses.

We’ll briefly go over what purpose author websites serve and what should be included in one. What is the purpose of author websites?

As hard as it is for bibliophiles to admit, every author needs an online presence. An author website leads visitors to accessible information about you and your work - which they can then use to view your published books and learn more about your accomplishments. In this way, having a website improves your visibility and cements your professional reputation.

In addition to providing background information to visitors, author websites create opportunities for increasing interest in your work and building a base of avid readers. While word of mouth never goes out of style, your online presence will put you on the map, and improve your methods for promoting upcoming books or events.

Finally, author websites can streamline the sale of your books. Adding an online store to your website means you can sell your books directly to interested readers. Alternatively, if your book is on a platform like Amazon or Kindle, your website can direct visitors straight to your account. By leveraging sales with a good online marketing strategy, you might just bring yourself to the top of the bestseller list.

01. Romi Neustadt

Romi Neustadt is an entrepreneur who shares her professional wisdom with the world. Her latest book You Can Have It All is an encouraging piece, guiding readers to live an authentic and fulfilled life. Romi’s author website certainly has it all. It communicates her mission as an author immediately, using impeccable personal branding and key elements that lead her to show off her mission and accomplishments.

Take a look, for instance, at the strong first impression she creates. A customized slideshow on the homepage features two powerful images. Romi’s headshot is confident and warm, embodying the vision of an author you’d like advice from. This is followed by a quality image of her latest book, which is accompanied by a short description and a strategic call-to-action button that states “Order Now”—making it easy for visitors to purchase a copy.

02. BB Writer

BB is a fiction and non-fiction writer from Boston with a sincere message and a visually pleasing website. The minimalist design and color scheme gives her website a clean feel, while the addition of images and an inspiring quote about writing enlivens the site and strengthens the writing theme.

Scrolling down BB’s author website, you’ll come upon a short “About Me” section, which allows visitors more insight into BB’s background as a writer and provides a space for her to write about what she’s currently working on.

You’ll also see that she’s added a customized logo to the site. Creating your own logo is a good idea as a writer, since it strengthens your personal brand.

03. Jessica Winter

Authors who want to showcase a specific book should turn to Jessica Winter’s website as an example. Jessica does an impressive job highlighting her latest novel by placing a high-quality image of the book’s cover strategically on the homepage. Alongside this image is a positive book review from another author, which gives an enticing description of her book as sassy, sarcastic and wonderful. Sounds like something you’d want to peruse, right?

Adding a well-designed website footer to her author website leaves Jessica ample space for a contact form. While the footer is generally the last thing people see, it’s a strategic place to encourage people to sign up to your mailing list.

04. Taylor Tyng

Anything from typical, Taylor Tyng’s well-designed author website makes for a pleasant browsing experience that keeps users engaged. High resolution animated images add a unique and exciting effect, telling the visual story of the writer’s journey. These colorful images provide a powerful visual contrast to the dark grey background and white text.

Using a hamburger menu allows Taylor to collapse the navigation bar of his site - ensuring users have a clear path to the important sections of his website while allowing more real estate for the visual attraction of his homepage. Another clever element is Taylor’s incorporation of a lightbox —the pop-up window grabs users’ attention and encourages them to sign up to the mailing list.

05. John Clarkson

The thrilling nature of John Clarkson’s novels is made palpable by his website’s visual theme. Its cohesive design theme includes a bold color scheme and the cover art taken from his book covers. As users scroll down the homepage, parallax scrolling gives the site a sense of depth and sophistication.

John’s homepage’s content is impressive while a clear navigation menu links users to even more information. Here, we have a spotlight on his latest book, reviews from critics and readers, a short bio and strategic calls-to-action placed through the page. Clearly visible links to his Good Reads and Amazon accounts encourages site visitors to purchase his work.

06. Trevor Cosson

Trevor Cosson’s site design is minimalistic, using lots of negative space to bring the user’s attention to the text featured throughout. As viewers navigate the site, they’ll be brought to different samples of his work, including his blog and examples of both creative writing and copy. With such a strong focus on text, you should choose a font that reflects your personality and is consistent with the rest of your website’s visual style. In this case, Trevor’s use of a simple serif font enhances the site’s classic feel.

Trevor’s website header also includes links to his various social media accounts. This is a strategic way to build your following as an author, helping increase your visibility and consistently engage with your readership.

07. Alan Allinger

Alan Allinger uses one of Wix’s templates to create a customized author website. The video box featured in this template perfectly embodies the goals of this crafty design element, which allows you to add overlays to your own video and frame it with customized shapes. In this case, a moving image of clouds inside of a quotation mark alludes to both the inspirational and practical aspects of writing.

Overall, the dynamic template showcases Alan’s work and experience quite well. Plus, the addition of a blog gives him the opportunity to share even more great content with his online community.

08. Ajinkya Dharane

Ajinkya Dharane’s powerful website exemplifies a design that’s daring while simultaneously adhering to the web design rules of thumb. A large, high-quality image dominates the background of his homepage, instantly catching the eye. The visual hierarchy and organized structure of the site are also on point, thanks to the use of boxes and strips added throughout the page.

We also love the subtle branding incorporated throughout. The repeated use of his logo’s elements and the inclusion of a favicon are both skillful ways to strengthen Ajinkya’s brand and bolster the professional appearance of the site.

Here’s another example of a Wix website template that’s just perfect for showcasing your work as an author. In this case, the Crawford sisters work as a team, customizing this elegant design by including their own logo, images and text.

Their sophisticated style is further emphasized by the use of light colors and traditional fonts. Their one-page website makes it easy to scroll through their site, and is a web design trend that's sure to impress.

10. Icon 303

Icon 303 is an artist and writer whose multi talented character is perfectly rendered on this website. The homepage is simple but visually potent—including an applied filter effect to the background image, a rousing quote, and an easy-to-navigate menu so visitors can check out his work.

Each page of Icon 303’s site has its own visual theme—a daring example of how your website does not necessarily have to be uniform. In fact, we’re seeing more and more web design trends that lead to a “more is more” mentality. While the shifting of color palettes, imagery and fonts might be too busy for some, it’s a compelling way to distinguish certain facets of your career on a single site.

What should an author website include?

Websites are personal in the sense that they reflect your distinct taste, so the design and content of each site varies depending on the author. Start by choosing a web hosting platform  and choose a template  that incorporates the features you want to include. Keep in mind that you can always customize these templates to evoke the style of your written work.

Once you’ve set up your foundation, be sure to include the following elements on your website.

A professional domain name

First, choose a domain name  that’s professional and easy for visitors to remember. It’s good practice to stick with something short and on brand. For example, you might choose to include your name and perhaps the words “books” or “author."

Pro tip: Try to use your author name instead of the title of one of your books. That way, if you plan to create new work in the future, you won’t need to worry about changing your domain. This is also helpful when establishing your brand identity  as an author.

An About page

An About page gives you the chance to tell visitors about yourself, your professional accomplishments, and your sources of inspiration as a writer. Here, you’ll want to include a headshot of yourself, a list of notable awards you’ve won over the course of your career, and of course, a professional bio . We’re not talking about a full-length novel—keep your bio short and sweet. For many visitors, this page will be their first impression of you and your work.

Perhaps this goes without saying, but you should dedicate a section of your website to your books. The purpose here is to give visitors an overview of your writing and entice them to purchase something. Include a high quality image of each book’s cover, along with a succinct description of its contents. The best author websites we’ve seen also incorporate excerpts from the book itself, which further entice visitors to read.

You can also set up an online store to sell your books directly from your website If you do this, you’ll want to set up your website in a way that encourages visitors to purchase. Adding call-to-action buttons such as “Buy Now” and linking them to your shop is a seamless way to create an easy buying experience.

Should you include books that you haven’t finished writing yet? Absolutely. If you have a title already and can create a preview of what the book is about, this will generate hype around its upcoming release.

Positive reviews

Be sure your website incorporates positive feedback about your work—either from readers, notable publications, or other writers. Adding reviews and testimonials  to your website is not only encouraged—it’s expected. Books with reviews are more likely to be read, since they familiarize potential readers with your book’s content and exhibit the general reaction of those who have already finished it. An author website is the perfect place to amplify positive responses and prove your book is worthwhile.

Add a contact form

As an author, you want to keep your fans updated on your career, book releases or special events surrounding your work. In order to do this, you need to capture their contact information and steadily build your mailing list. Help users sign up by adding a well-designed contact form  to your website and use effective email marketing  to increase engagement with your readership.

The 25 Best Writing Websites for Authors in 2024

POSTED ON Feb 12, 2024

Linda Cartwright

Written by Linda Cartwright

There are many writing websites that are useful hubs of information for aspiring authors of all types and genres.

Apart from the desire to become an author and a bit of determination, what makes a successful writer? According to veterans of the industry, it’s lots of reading, writing, and a supportive community .

The writing websites in this blog can provide you with all three. So, without further ado and in no particular order, let me introduce these top book writing websites to learn more about the craft, stay up-to-date with industry news, and find fellow writers in your network.

The blog on the best writing websites will cover:

The 25 best writing websites.

Here are our favorite writing websites that can help you perfect your craft:

1. selfpublishing.com

What kind of writing website would we be if we didn't include ourselves in this list of writing websites?

At selfpublishing.com , we are proud of our educational blog and are always creating new content to help writers turn their dream of publishing a book into reality.

If you're looking to improve your writing skills, learn how to self-publish a book , market a book , or even create your own author website – this is the ideal place to learn.

2. Self-Publishing School

Self-Publishing School is the leading educational self-publishing company . It's our second choice for the best writing websites to keep on your radar.

If you're interested in learning all about Amazon self-publishing to how to create an online course to build your author brand, Self-Publishing School produces informational articles, videos, and podcast content on a variety of topics.

In addition, there are several author education programs offered, depending on what your goals look like.

3. Self-Publishing Advice

Self-Publishing Advice is a watchdog community organized by the Alliance of Independent Authors. It aims to protect self-publishing writers from untrustworthy publishers. It also reviews other writing websites (mostly in the independent and self-publishing services spaces).

The site has a collection of reviews on various publishers, with rating scores ranging from “excellent” to “watchdog advisory”. The authors themselves report dishonest publishers and regularly update their base. However, the site’s usefulness isn’t restricted to that.

There is also a blog with loads of advice on self-publishing (obviously!), audiobook creation, inspiration, and everything of interest to an indie author.

4. The Book Designer

Joel Friedlander is a graphic designer with an extensive background in book design and advertising. He has created The Book Designer , which is a treasure trove of articles on book marketing, self-publishing, and, of course, book design (including book covers , typography basics, and text layout).

His series “eBook Cover Design Awards” is particularly instructive, since every nominated book cover is dissected with respect to genre aesthetics, intended audience, and all the minute details that can make a difference between a bestseller and an obscure title no one notices.

Even if you don’t create covers yourself, it’s always good to know what to look for when you outsource the task to a designer, which is what makes this one of the best writing websites.

Apart from valuable advice, Friedlander shares free book cover templates, a book launch toolkit, and a media kit for authors to optimize the marketing of your book.

5. Paper Help

Typos are the worst. I have yet to meet a writer who could be 100 percent sure their text was absolutely typo-free, even after rounds of editing. Because it never is.

Authors are notorious for their typo blindness because by the third draft, they know the text like the back of their hand and familiarization handicaps your ability to pick out mistakes.

That’s why we need editors – or at least editing services that will comb through the text for misspelled words and other pesky oopsies.

Paper Help is a service that specializes in writing and editing of all sorts of papers. If you need a second pair of eyes to go through your manuscript before its debut, it can be a nice low-cost compromise between a literary editor and doing it yourself, which has earned it a spot on our list of the best writing websites.

6. Grammar Girl

Of course, to make your editing less of a struggle, it’s better to make fewer mistakes in the first place. That’s why one has to have go-to writing websites for all things grammar. Mignon Fogarty’s blog is just the right sort of resource for that.

Grammar Girl is a section on the Quick and Dirty Tips portal devoted to everything that a writer needs to know about spelling and grammar.

You can read your daily dose of nicely summed-up linguistic wisdom and build your competency bit by bit – and have lots of fun in the process.

7. AutoCrit

Okay, with grammar off the table, you still need to edit your drafts with regard to consistency, adverbs, repetition, readability, useless filler words, etc. Here is where AutoCrit comes in.

This is not so much a book writing website, but a word-processing tool with editing features and guidance based on real-world publishing standards.

AutoCrit makes our list of writing websites because it analyzes your text and gives recommendations on how to improve it. For example, it can flag poor dialogue , misuse of adverbs, or relying on clichés. This tool has subscription plans with more robust professional features, but they also offer a free option with essentials that every author needs.

Plus, the site has a collection of articles with tips about the craft and the business of writing, from adding depth to your characters to DIY proofreading techniques.

8. Janice Hardy’s Fiction University

Janice Hardy, a teen fantasy novelist, is the founder of Fiction University . With the help of fellow writers and guest contributors, she has amassed more than 2,500 articles on fiction writing. They deal with every stage of penning a novel – from brainstorming ideas and developing a story to self-publishing your finished opus.

Starting soon the creators of the website plan to organize workshops where they will introduce some practice to go with the theory. Still, the scope of the material on the website is impressive as is, making it one of the best writing websites.

Fiction University is comprehensively organized by relevant topics, making it a true writing encyclopedia and a go-to place for anyone who starts their writing career or simply wishes to improve their skills.

9. 750 Words

You know what makes you a better writer? More writing. 750 Words is a simple website for writers that has just one goal – helping you to build a good habit of writing every day.

You have probably heard about the technique called “morning pages”. Morning pages are three pages of text (or 750 words) that you write, preferably in the morning to get everything distracting out of your head and shift focus on putting thoughts into words.

With gamification devices like badges and competitiveness (via anonymous statistics), 750 Words encourages you to stick to a schedule and write those pages every day. It’s minimalistic and private – no one will see your writing but you.

10. Build Book Buzz

Marketing strategy is often overlooked by self-publishing authors. Too bad, even the best books don’t sell themselves.

This website for writers has some tips on how to prepare the launch and how to promote a book when it’s already out and about. The blog section is full of detailed how-to guides on working with beta readers, coming up with promotion strategy, boosting sales via various social media channels, partnering up with influencers, and more.

Build Book Buzz is one of the best writing websites with just the right ratio of figures and statistics vs. insider tips on how to build an online presence.

11. Language is a Virus

With writing games and exercises galore, Language is a Virus makes a perfect playground for word enthusiasts. It never fails to spark imagination and get your creative juices flowing.

From the prompt of the day greeting you on the homepage, to avant-garde techniques of Jack Kerouac and Salvador Dali, this is one of those writing websites that is truly committed to getting you writing.

Poem visualization, surrealistic word definitions, generating reverse poetry from your text, or adding your line to a never-ending story by thousands of other writers – not one bizarrely mesmerizing activity here will leave you indifferent.

So next time you need a little writer's block help , don’t waste your time and head here straight away.

12. Six-Words Memoirs

Six-Word Memoirs is a charming little project with a big goal. It aims to inspire the participants to get to the essence of who they are and what matters most. To do that, they have to answer some pretty existential questions in six words – no more, no less.

This can be quite a challenge even for experienced writers, which means it's a great writing tool to get down to the basics. Sci-fi and fantasy stories in six words, seismic shifts in six words, your personal paradise in six words – a nice exercise in eloquence and one of the best writer’s block remedies I’ve seen.

13. The Writing Cooperative

The Writing Cooperative is a diverse resource for writers by writers. A piece of advice on any situation under the sun from writer’s block to existential crisis and burnout. Everything is specifically tailored for a fellow writer like yourself, so this is a true hub for diverse topics.

Anyone with something to say can submit a post and the community is quite diverse and supportive. There are also some secrets of the craft shared here, from where it is best to share your writing to why digression can sometimes be a boon for your story. These tips make The Writing Cooperative one of the best writing websites.

14. The Write Life

At first glance, The Write Life seems geared more towards bloggers and freelancers, yet it has much to offer to anyone whose livelihood depends on their writing talent. How to come up with great titles, how to find a critic to improve your text, how to self-publish your book, how to market it, how to hire a freelance editor , how to prevent burnout, and other secrets of the craft.

In the tools section, there are eBooks and courses for writing professionals as well as some handy tools, such as editing apps, invoicing software, marketplaces, and communities for freelance writers.

15. Helping Writers Become Authors

For those of you who have long been creating content for a living but never dipped your toes into long-form prose, Helping Writers Become Authors is a perfect boot camp.

Award-winning author K.M. Weiland tells how to create a compelling character with a story arc, what mistakes authors most often make, how to make readers love every page of your novel, and why even movies falling short of our expectations is always a bad writing problem.

If for some reason blog is not your preferred format, there are instructional eBooks, vlogs, and a podcast.

16. Association of Ghostwriters

If you want to find a ghostwriter or are just curious to know more about this particular specialization, Association of Ghostwriters has answers to your questions. Although it has paid membership plans, lots of valuable information is free for grabs, making it one of the best writing websites.

If you want to learn how to publish a book traditionally, Association of Ghostwriters has you covered.

17. NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo (National Novel-Writing Month) is an epic creative writing event where participants work towards writing a 50,000-word novel in the month of November. Although professional writers are ambiguous about this marathon, it can work for some authors who understand how speed drafts fit into the entire writing process.

The NaNoWriMo website was created especially for the event. Here you can track your progress, set milestones, and get pep talks and support from other writers in an ever-growing community. There are online and offline events that help you finish your novel.

Whether you are a seasoned writer or an enthusiastic beginner, NaNoWriMo is one of the best writing websites, with inspirational posts, a company of fellow contestants, tips, tools, resources, and encouragement. Just remember, if your word count is lower and you didn’t get that badge – you are still a writer. It’s only a game!

18. Scribophile

Every writer needs feedback to improve, and it’s always better when this feedback is detailed, informed, and comes from someone who knows what they are talking about.

Better still, if you get this feedback before you publish your work and start receiving bad reviews from underwhelmed readers. (That’s what beta-readers and writing workshops are for.)

At Scribophile , you will find a supportive community of writers like yourself. Here, they are willing to give you feedback to improve your text with their critique instead of tearing you down.

If you are still tentative, there are writing tutorials and publishing tips available without even signing in.

I am a retired man with a technical background. I have written many articles on varied subjects but have never published. The subject matter includes science, religion, political and current events. The articles vary in length from one page to 20 pages. Have you ane suggestions for an appropriate posting site?

Avatar for Derek Haines

You cover a lot of topics, and different lengths, Phil.

It might be difficult to find one platform for them all.

Perhaps setting up a free blog, such as with Blogger or WordPress, might be a better move.

Thanks, I’ll look into that.

Avatar for Uma Gupta

I have written quite a few articles, most of them being inspirational. Some are in the form of messages learnt from incidents in everyday life. I also feel that as a citizen on this planet, it is my duty to share the good things I have learnt, so others can benefit too. Am wondering where would be a good place to begin publishing. Thanks.

Avatar for Ms. Anonymous

Derek, I am a decent lady, not available for romance, but just want you to know that I like your way; I just like your website & the way you make your comments and respond to questions. There’s just something about you. I like you.

Thank you. I’m happy to hear that you enjoy the content of the site.

Avatar for Rachel

I think writing story’s and publishing them and seeing how people comment, will help me when i get older and see what I want to be. I haven’t chosen yet I’ve always wanted to be a journalist or a media worker, honestly, I don’t yet…

I notice that as a new writer, I have strong passion to publish. But I believe there is the need to learn to make my writing ‘clean’, mistake-free and perfect for my readers before publishing. What writing training apps would you recommend to help me ‘sanitize’ my writing?

I would suggest Prowritingaid for a new writer. It’s got everything you need to edit and improve your writing.

Avatar for Victoria

Will be paid for publishing articles on this platform listed above?

Will try this

I’m seventy-two and have been writing for a long time. I have a folder full of articles and I also have a folder full of science fiction stories. I have poetry and comics. I need a platform that allows me to publish as I please.

Avatar for Samuel Mathore

I’m an unpublished writer with several manuscripts. Do these platforms here publish novels?

No, Samuel. These sites are only suitable for publishing articles.

If you want to publish novels, try Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) or Draft2Digital.

Hello Derek, I’m new to writing articles, but I wasn’t to write articles focusing on Young People and their struggles. I would like to build some readership for my article. What site do you recommend? Thank you.

You can use any site, Paul. But before you do, make sure your writing is perfect. In your comment, I’m sure you meant, wanted to write, and not wasn’t to write. You can’t expect to find readers if you make errors like this. Always, always check your writing before you hit the button.

Avatar for Paoletta

Dear Derek, I would like to write articles about personal awareness and development. I am a new writer and I would like to reach a large odience eventually .. which platform would you recommend, please?

The best platform is always the one that you feel will work for you, Paoletta. But if you are looking at building a readership, Medium and Substack are two you might consider.

Avatar for Francis Ekongang Nzante

I’m really grateful to have stumbled on this site which I believe will greatly help me in publishing my articles. I do news articles that focus much more on culture. But I sort of publish stuff that is newsworthy so I also write on crisis in Africa.

Avatar for Anna

Be aware that on Medium your articles and you as an author won’t be searchable until you get a critical mass of readers and followers/claps. Which means that you need to actively promote your writing, for strangers to find your page on any given day (except the few first hours of the publication). Very disappointed.

Medium is no different from any other form of publishing articles. You need a certain amount of traction before it can rank in Google Search.

For a blog post, you need backlinks. On Medium, you need followers and claps.

It’s pretty standard stuff, but not disappointing if you know how to promote what you post.

There are no free rides at getting articles to rank. You still need to work on it to be successful.

8 Best Website Builders for Authors and Writers in 2024

Short on Time? These Are the Best Website Builders for Authors and Writers in 2024

wix-logo

  • What We Look For in the Best Website Builders for Authors and Writers
  • Quality templates. Whether you’re looking to sell your newest book or just keep your fans updated, your website is going to reflect your brand. I only included builders with high-quality and professional-looking templates.
  • Customization features. As a creative, it’s important to have the final word over your website, and templates can only get you so far. I chose builders with customization tools that will make your site stand out from the crowd.
  • Ease of use. Most writers aren’t also designers and coders in their downtime (although kudos if you are!). These builders give you the tools to easily create your site with no prior experience.
  • Ecommerce. Though I can’t overstate the value of a good portfolio, you might want to use your website to do more than just showcase your work. These builders include tools to help you set up an online shop for anything from paperbacks, to merch, to e-books.
  • Extra author features. The builders on this list offer tools that, while not absolutely essential , are certainly convenient. Think blogging, reader reviews, and the ability to create newsletters.

Why You Shouldn’t Use a Dedicated Website Builder for Writers

  • 1. Wix: An Easy-To-Use Builder That Can Foster Your Creativity

Limited-time offer - Don't miss it!

  • Extensive app market. Not only is Wix one of the most feature-packed builders on this list, it also offers over 240 apps and integrations that allow you to connect directly to your Amazon page, display real-time reviews, and more.
  • Personalized SEO. Wix comes with an AI-powered SEO (search engine optimization) wiz designed to give you personalized tips to help you rank higher on search engines.
  • Outstanding contact forms. Do you want fans to contact you through your website? How about press inquiries? Wix comes with tons of pre-made contact forms to help you interact with visitors on your terms.
  • Separate mobile editing. Wix’s templates are what I would call semi-responsive. This means that Wix automatically resizes certain aspects of your site to work on mobile screens, but you can edit the mobile version separately for an even greater degree of creative control.
  • 2. SITE123: Perfect for Authors Who Want to Get Online Quickly

Excellent looking sites and reflect on the quality of the author and writing skills. Besides a beautiful site, good reviews are essential and a critique of the author would be good to post on the first page. How To Build an Author Website: a Step-by-Step Guide [+ Checklist]

An author website is a must for any writer who wants to be taken seriously. It’s the best way to present your work to the world, and an important marketing tool to grow a readership and sell more books. Luckily, you don’t need to be a tech wizard to make a beautiful site — with a bit of guidance, anyone can do it.

Here’s how to build an author website in 7 steps:

1. Buy a domain name

2. choose a website builder and hosting service, 3. hire an author website designer, 4. add content to your homepage, 5. set up an email newsletter , 6. create a free resource for your visitors, 7. keep improving the user experience.

LJU9oKhdrdM Video Thumb

A domain name is your “street address” on the web, which you can buy — or more accurately, rent 一 in order to get started. There are many services to acquire your own domain for as little as $8/year, such as Namecheap , Google domains , and GoDaddy . You can also buy a domain name directly from many website builders, which we’ll cover in the next step, but it will usually cost you more money.

Here are a couple of ideas for choosing domain names:

  • Go with your full author name if it’s available, or something close to it (i.e. rupikaur.com).
  • If your name is already taken, try including “author” (i.e. johncaseyauthor.com)
  • In case your author name is long or easy to mistype, pick something as short and simple as possible (i.e. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s website is simply chimamanda.com ).

Once you’ve snatched your domain name, it’s time to decide on the tool you’ll use to create your digital home.

The homepage of Squarespace's website

A website builder is a site where you can craft and edit the layout and content of your author website, whereas a hosting service provides the servers where your website will be hosted. To use a real estate analogy, if your domain is your street address, the hosting server rents you the land, and the website builder is the construction company that lets you build on top of it.

Most website builders today come with hosting included, which spares you the trouble of signing up for another service, connecting them together, and paying two separate annual bills. But as we said before, this option is costlier.

Here are a few of the most popular options for website builders:

  • Wordpress.com : the OG website builder and go-to option for most authors looking to launch their first site;
  • Squarespace : a popular builder that offers easily customizable designs already optimized for mobile navigation;
  • Wix : similar to Squarespace, Wix offers high customization and a user-friendly interface;
  • Shopify : designed for e-commerce sites , Shopify should be your choice if you’re planning on creating a store to sell books and merchandise.

You’ll have to spend some time figuring out which service best meets your needs and budget, then go through the usual account creation process. Now that the boring part is over, it’s finally time to design your little corner of the Internet.

The prospect of designing your website from scratch can be overwhelming, but the good is that you don’t have to. Each of the website builders mentioned above offer plenty of free templates for you to choose from. You could simply browse through the different styles and pick the one that speaks to you the most, then drag and drop your images and copy. But there’s a catch.

If you’re hoping to stand out and build a truly unique website, using ready-made templates risks creating something that looks too similar to other author websites, which could damage your brand.

One popular option is to work with a professional author website designer 一 it will cost you more money (around $1,600 on average ), but it will guarantee a professional result. Collaborating with a designer will give you the creative freedom to personalize your site to your branding. Most web designers will also help you through potential technical challenges, such as connecting your domain to your content management system (CMS).

The homepage of Chimamanda's website

There are a few essential features that your website should have, although feel free to play around with them. To see what you want to include in your own online presence, you can always check out the websites of your favorite authors .

Generally speaking, a professional website will usually include:

An ‘ About me’ page . A dedicated page with your author bio , your professional headshot, and ideally, some fun facts about yourself (i.e. “In my downtime, I swim with sharks.” ).

A ‘ Books’ page . A clear display of all of your books, audiobooks, etc. with links for readers to easily buy them.

A contact form. A simple way to get in touch with you, whether through a form, a simple email address, or a phone contact (if you want to live life on the edge and invite spam calls).

Social media links . If you’re not on social media, do you really exist? Jokes aside, if you’re actively growing an online following, link to your accounts on the top or bottom section of each page.

A blog : mostly recommended for nonfiction authors, a blog is useful to keep your audience in the loop and to share your latest thoughts and ideas.

Once the basic features have been built, the next step is to set up a newsletter that will let you directly communicate with your audience.

💡 Listen to our top-rated web designer, Stuart Grant, discussing how to make your website work for you . He shares his best tips from 6 years of helping authors create stunning sites.

A mailing list is the most important asset for growing your readership and it’s the cornerstone of every author’s platform . Unlike social media, an email newsletter is a communication channel that you have control over, and can use to turn readers into life-long supporters.

We’ve already covered in another post how to build an author list , but here are the three main steps:

Choose a mailing list provider . Depending on your needs and budget, pick among the most popular options like MailerLite , ConvertKit , Flodesk , and Active Campaign .

Connect it to your site . This step is a bit technical, and it will include creating an email form on your email provider, and then copy an embed code on your website builder page. Each mail provider should offer detailed set-up instructions but always test that the integration works by signing up to your newsletter.

Top tip: if you have a Gmail account, you can sign up to your lists multiple times by adding a + to your address. For example, [email protected] can also signup as [email protected]

Create automated campaigns . The beauty of email is that most can be automated. For example, every time someone subscribes to your list, they should be greeted with a warm welcome email that tells them what they can expect from you. The more complex your engagement with your audience, the more automations you’ll need to create 一 start with the welcome email and scale up from there.

Congrats, you’ve set up your newsletter! Remember that most visitors will not subscribe to your email list without an incentive, so your next goal should be to create an enticing lead magnet.

How to Build Your Author Mailing List

Learn how to connect with your audience and sell more books with email.

A lead magnet is simply a free resource prospective buyers can access by giving you their email address. The content of the lead magnet can be anything you want, as long as it’s valuable to your readers. If you write fiction, it could be a short story, or perhaps the first book in your series . If you’re writing nonfiction, it could be access to an exclusive online course, or a free chapter of your book. Whatever you decide, make it worth your readers’ time (and email).

A newsletter form on James Clear's website

To set up the lead magnet, you’ll have to create the resource (often a PDF file) and set up another email sequence that delivers the file to all who sign up for it. Again, register for this sequence and check that everything works fine.

If you followed all the steps so far, you have a professional website up and running - congratulations! From now on, it’ll just need some extra love and maintenance.

There is always room to improve your visitors' experience on your website. From adding dynamic elements, banners for price promotions , or a calendar page for your book tour . Your options are endless.

Again, if managing all these things sounds too complicated to tackle on your own, consider a professional web designer. On Reedsy, you’ll find top-notch designers who will help you tailor a website to your needs.

Finally, to make sure that your website does your work justice, we've created a checklist that you can use throughout the design process.

Download Reedsy's author website checklist!

Just enter your email address and we'll send you a copy.

Remember, this is your home on the Internet, and it will influence what literary agents and readers alike think of you when they Google your name. Your website is worth the extra care and effort to make it as beautiful and professional as possible, and hopefully, this post will set you in the right direction.

Some great advice here. Though I have a website with my book cover on it, I know it needs to be improved to catch the reader's mind.

Eyeland Gurl says:

Excellent advice for authors. I always enjoy seeing how creative authors can get with their website and blog designs. This piece is an inspiration to me. Thanks so much for sharing!

Janet Nicholson says:

Thanks for this info. White font on a black background is very difficult to read, especially for people with astigmatism. I'm not the only reader who doesn't bother reading a website with light font on a dark background. I think it would be worth keeping this in mind when designing a website.

↪️ Ricardo Fayet replied:

08/05/2019 – 12:32

I totally agree with you, light fond on a dark background is rarely easy on the eyes. However, you see it quite often out there because on newer screens (like the retina ones) it doesn't render quite as badly as on old screens.

C.F. Lapinel says:

Great piece. Lots of cool insights. Thanks!

Glad you liked it! We'll have a second piece on author websites next Tuesday, so do come back for more insights! Or alternatively, join the newsletter on the ribbon above, we only send them once a month :)

H Gibson says:

Interesting article. I am glad my website ticks most of the boxes. Due to some of The Chronicles of Han Storm's ('older' 65+ years) niche market readers, it was essential to design a basic, user friendly environment.

Of course! It's very important to take your target market's demographics and interests into account when designing your website. Of course, if your books respect those rules and you design your website in such a way that it reflects your books' branding, this shouldn't be a problem!

8 Of The Best Websites To Find And Download eBooks For Free

I f you're an avid reader or audiobook listener, you've probably explored Amazon and similar sites for your next great read. However, did you know there's a treasure trove of free books available at your fingertips?

While there are dedicated e-readers, the associated costs of purchasing books through their platforms can get pricey. The good news is that the following websites are great places where bookworms can find and download ebooks -- and even audiobooks -- for absolutely free. If you're missing the library vibe, several of these sites allow users to borrow digital titles, just like you would at your local public library.

Of course, clicking on a link that promises free products online can sometimes feel risky. However, rest assured that every site mentioned in this list has been verified to genuinely provide free ebooks or audiobooks in various file formats. Additionally, these sites are user-friendly and completely legal for downloading content -- after all, nothing is worse than clicking on a free link only to receive a free virus or a DMCA violation.

Modern technology has made it easier than ever to read a wide range of books and grow your digital library without breaking the bank. Here are eight of the best websites to find and download ebooks for free.

For free physical books, you turn to your local library. For free ebooks, the solution is OverDrive , a digital library platform offering patrons access to a vast collection at no cost.

Overdrive is a system used by public libraries around the world. It makes it easy for you to find the books you're looking for and download them directly to your Kindle or device, completely free of charge. The system works just like a library. To sign up, simply input your local library account information and then select which books you want to check out. The books are then downloaded directly to your device for a set duration, usually about two weeks. When it's time to return the book, the lending license expires and is automatically made unavailable so that the next person can download it.

While OverDrive provides a convenient and legal avenue to access fresh ebooks outside the public domain, there is a limitation to note. Due to copyright restrictions, each ebook has a set number of licenses available for lending. This means that, at times, you might encounter a waitlist for popular titles. The system ensures copyright compliance, preventing unlimited duplications of a single ebook. So, while OverDrive offers an exceptional free and legal resource for the latest reads, you just may have to wait in line for really popular titles.

Internet Archive: Open Library

Have you ever considered the monumental task of archiving the entire internet? While it may seem impossible, that's exactly what the Internet Archive is attempting. Founded in 1996 during the rise of public internet access, the Internet Archive: Open Library is an online library and repository whose mission is to archive as much of the digital world as possible, including websites, music, and ebooks.

The Internet Archive is the largest repository of historic website data with snapshots dating back to 1996 that capture the evolution of websites over time. You could spend hours reliving the '90s internet in the Wayback Machine . The site's digital library has an impressive collection of both public domain titles and copyrighted works shared with appropriate permissions. All content on their platform is accessible to the public at no cost.

The site hosts millions of books and different texts that are freely available for download, making it one of the easiest places to find free ebooks online.

Google Play Books

Google Play Books is another easy way to fill your digital shelves with paid and free ebooks. The app is incredibly intuitive, making it easy to store and organize your digital library by genre, series, or any other criteria. If you do end up purchasing a book, it stays with your account forever, granting access to it on any of your devices. The app also has a massive library of free ebooks that anyone can access with their Google account.

It may take a bit of looking and adjusting filters in their store, but Google Play Books has over 10 million free ebooks available for download. There's no cost or subscription fee. Users can simply browse through the listings and choose the ones they want to appear in their Google Library.

Many of the titles for free are public domain works that are free from copyright laws. This category includes timeless classics and favorites such as the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. However, the free offerings don't stop at the classics. Google Play Books also showcases an extensive list of contemporary works that have been submitted by authors or requested to be made publicly available.

From acclaimed New York Times best-selling authors to budding literary talents, Google Play Books has something for everyone. You can also take advantage of their occasional promotions, where you can snag modern titles at a steal or even for free.

BookBub isn't a library or an ebook repository, but signing up for an account will definitely help you find ebooks for cheap -- and occasionally even for free. When major platforms like Google Play host flash sales or offer ebooks at reduced prices, BookBub monitors the retailers and sends out alerts to subscribers.

Upon registering with BookBub, users can specify their literary preferences by genre or book type. That way, whenever a deal aligns with your reading tastes, BookBub promptly notifies you about the discounted price and the corresponding retailer. This makes BookBub an easy way to fill up your hard drive with free and legally downloaded ebooks.

Beyond mere alerts, BookBub fosters a vibrant community of avid readers. The platform encourages user-generated content, including book recommendations tailored to your favorites. For instance, if you're a fan of "The Lord of the Rings," fellow users might suggest diving into "The Wheel of Time" series. It's a friendly community of book lovers, and most are more than happy to chat about their favorites.

Drawing from its Latin roots, Libri (books) and Vox (voice), LibriVox is a vast repository that offers a plethora of free audiobooks to the public.

Largely, the collection at LibriVox contains public domain works, making it less likely to offer contemporary titles. The platform's main mission is to ensure audiobooks are available to anyone with an internet connection. This is a daunting task since audiobooks typically require extensive production and drastically increase the price of a book. However, LibriVox manages to offer them at no cost, thanks to the dedication of volunteers who record the books. These volunteers range from ardent fans of the literature to professionals, ensuring a rich and immersive listening experience.

For those who prefer a synchronized reading experience, LibriVox often provides links to the exact text referenced during the audio recording, consolidating the search for both ebooks and audiobooks . The platform's admirable mission has significantly expanded public access to literary works. For those inspired by the cause, LibriVox welcomes new voices, offering an opportunity to volunteer and contribute to their ever-growing collection.

Initially established in France, Feedbooks has grown into a globally-recognized digital library and publisher. It works similarly to Google Play Books in that it offers a wide range of ebooks, both paid and free.

On Feedbooks, users can easily access thousands of free ebooks, either through their user-friendly app or their online platform. Once a book is downloaded, it remains in the user's account, available for direct reading via the app. Additionally, like other online book retailers, Feedbooks periodically offers special deals and flash sales, giving opportunities to get books at substantial discounts or entirely for free.

What sets Feedbooks apart is that they don't specifically cater to English text. While many platforms provide ebooks in various languages, Feedbooks prioritizes offering a wide linguistic range. This includes, but isn't limited to, French, Ukrainian, and Spanish. Furthermore, to cater to diverse reading preferences, their ebooks are available in formats compatible with Android, Kindle , and Apple devices.

Manybooks began as a platform to help fledgling authors publish their works and gain a following. It has since evolved into a comprehensive repository for ebooks. All of the books on the site are completely free and legal to download.

While Manybooks collection includes a wide range of public domain works, the best part is how the site helps to promote new authors. It is used as a starting point for authors to publicize their books, get feedback from readers, and start to build an audience. Many authors will post the first book in a series for free as a strategy to engage readers and solicit feedback. This approach paves the way for readers to discover lesser-known yet talented writers.

Using Manybooks is very easy, thanks to its intuitive interface. Users can easily filter their searches by genre or explore unique combinations. It's a great way to explore works that you may not otherwise find. Beyond its free library, Manybooks also curates newsletters and author spotlights to aid subscribers in finding interesting reads.

Project Gutenberg

Established in 1971, Project Gutenberg has been a pioneering force in the free distribution of ebooks to the public. Its enduring mission is "To encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks."

Named after the Gutenberg press, its founder, Michael Hart, envisioned the computer's important role in storing and spreading information, particularly books and literature. He recognized that once digitized, information could be endlessly replicated and shared, enriching society through free access.

Today, Project Gutenberg offers thousands of public domain works and legally submitted content for download within the United States. For those outside the US, it's crucial to check your nation's copyright laws before downloading.

Beyond ebooks in various formats, Project Gutenberg also provides a diverse range of audiobooks. This collection includes both human-narrated audiobooks by volunteers and voice actors, as well as AI-generated readings, offering users a broad spectrum of listening experiences that might otherwise not be available.

7. Previously published collections are not eligible, including self-published collections available as ebooks or in print.

8. Authors may submit more than one manuscript to the competition for consideration. Each submission will require a separate reading fee.

9. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but please withdraw your manuscript if it is accepted by another publisher. Withdrawal can be completed via Submittable by opening your submission and clicking "Withdraw" in the upper-right corner of your screen. Reading fees are not refundable and a withdrawn manuscript cannot be replaced with another manuscript.

10. Confirmation of receipt will be sent via e-mail by Submittable immediately after submission. An announcement of our shortlist and winner will be sent to all entrants via email through Submittable, and posted on the Press 53 website, and Facebook on the dates indicated above.

11. The Deadline for entering is July 31. Requests to edit a manuscript will not be honored after the deadline. If a manuscript is withdrawn, it cannot be replaced with another manuscript, but you may enter another manuscript before the deadline, which would require another reading fee.

One last look at Packers draft grades, with most settling on the same mark

websites for authors free

The Green Bay Packers brought 11 new players into the fold over the weekend in the NFL draft, and most independent evaluators from around the internet gave the same rough letter grade to the Packers: a 'B.'

Take a look at some of the opinions:

Mel Kiper gave the Packers a 'B'

From ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper: "If only every prediction in my mock drafts was as easy as Green Bay's this year. For months I've said the Packers needed to plug their void at left tackle in Round 1 as a result of this deep and talented OT class. Longtime starter David Bakhtiari is gone, and I thought they should identify the guy they liked most and take him. Turns out, that's exactly what GM Brian Gutekunst did. …

"I was all-in on the Packers after their first three picks, but the rest of this haul leaves me underwhelmed, especially on Day 3. Cooper and Bullard save it from a C+."

For Nate Davis of USA TODAY, it's a 'B-plus'

From Nate Davis of USA TODAY : "Maybe not supremely sexy – again, no Round 1 wideout – but just another solid job by GM Brian Gutekunst. First-round OT Jordan Morgan (Arizona), second-round LB Edgerrin Cooper (Texas A&M), second-round S Javon Bullard (Georgia) and third-round RB MarShawn Lloyd (USC) should all be cheaper, more effective upgrades for David Bakhtiari, De’Vondre Campbell, Darnell Savage and AJ Dillon, respectively, Dillon the only (one) who returns (and probably only for 2024). However nitpickers will note none but Morgan play a premium position. Still, last year’s trade of QB Aaron Rodgers helped to enable this talent intake for a team that’s looking increasingly bulletproof around second-year starting QB Jordan Love."

Washington Post also says 'B-plus' for Packers

From Mark Maske : "The Packers did well to add to their collection of young talent and potentially build on last season’s surprising run to the divisional round of the playoffs. They got an offensive tackle, Jordan Morgan, in the opening round after releasing mainstay David Bakhtiari this offseason. They landed a pair of potential defensive contributors in Round 2 in linebacker Edgerrin Cooper and safety Javon Bullard. And they chose a third-round running back, MarShawn Lloyd, who could split carries with free agent newcomer Josh Jacobs after they released Aaron Jones. Adding Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt in the final round also was justified. Another team with a bigger need at QB probably should have done that sooner."

A litany of other sites gave the Packers a 'B' as well

Although the sites had different reasons for handing out a 'B' to the Packers, many places landed in the same spot.

Charles McDonald of Yahoo! Sports: "Their linebacker picks were questionable (although the entire linebacker class was down this year), but they found a potential franchise left tackle in Jordan Morgan at the end of the first round. They took three safeties as well and might have a tough, versatile duo now between Javon Bullard and Xavier McKinney. MarShawn Lloyd is a quality addition at running back while they test Josh Jacobs for at least a season."

Chad Reuter of NFL.com : "Morgan's pass-protection skills give him a chance to replace three-time Pro Bowler David Bakhtiari at left tackle, or he could prove himself a nice positional blocker at guard, allowing the Packers to get their five best linemen on the field together. Cooper and Bullard were excellent picks in Round 2, with both filling needs, but I was a bit ambivalent on the team using third-round selections on a running back (albeit a good one in Lloyd) and a second linebacker."

Carmen Vitali of Fox Sports : "Jordan Morgan should fit right in on their position-fluid offensive line. Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper can be an excellent complement to Quay Walker. Now that Jeff Hafley is the defensive coordinator, the Packers needed to stock up on his favorite position: safety. They got Xavier McKinney in a splash free agency signing but still drafted three more players at the position. Javon Bullard out of Georgia at No. 58 overall is excellent value. The other big splash was USC running back MarShawn Lloyd, who will go up against his college quarterback twice a year now. Throw in a couple of additional offensive linemen for depth/competition and you have a perfectly solid Green Bay draft. GM Brian Gutekunst is notorious for getting production out of later round picks and this year figures to be no different."

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports: "The Packers do a nice job with the draft, and this one will give them some players who could start as rookies. The Packers clearly drafted for need, landing Morgan, Cooper and second-round safety Javon Bullard. Running back MarShawn Lloyd will be a nice addition to the offense behind Josh Jacobs. Quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh is a nice pick, even if he won't play other than for injury."

Bleacher Report : "General manager Brian Gutekunst did a fine job of finding value on Day 3, especially with the selection of Oregon State safety Kitan Oladapo. He was the 35th-ranked overall prospect on the B/R board and will partner with fellow rookies Bullard, Evan Williams and free-agent addition McKinney to help solidify the back end of Green Bay's defense. Did Gutekunst get the most value with each of his selections? Probably not, but he did manage to address most of Green Bay's most notable needs."

The Athletic ranks the Packers outside the top 20

Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked the Packers No. 21 among the 32 draft classes. He listed safety Javon Bullard as his favorite pick and mentioned Jacob Monk as a Day 3 player who could surprise some people.

"With the future of the Packers’ center position unsettled, I wouldn’t rule out Monk as a possible long-term option," Brugler wrote. "His size and strength are solid, but what separates Monk is his foot quickness and processing skills, which will allow him to compete for reps at both guard and center."

The Ringer gives the Packers a 'C'

Danny Kelly was a little less kind to the Packers' draft class:

"The Packers hit for contact in this draft — adding a couple of potential future starters at positions of need — but I’m not sure I see any home run picks. The team grabbed a versatile lineman in Jordan Morgan in the first round, giving the team flexibility at both tackle and guard. They nabbed an explosive, rangy linebacker in Edgerrin Cooper in the second round and then picked a versatile safety/nickelback in Javon Bullard in the third; both should compete for playing time early on. I’m a fan of USC running back MarShawn Lloyd, who will play behind Josh Jacobs but could compete for snaps with A.J. Dillon in year one."

The 2024 social media ranking of free-market organizations.

Several of the largest and oldest think tanks that promote the importance of the free economy, like the Heritage Foundation, continue to rank on the top in most social media platforms. But it is an open market, and younger organizations with relevant messages and proper media strategies are attracting a large following promoting efforts essential to a free society.

Fé & Trabalho, a Brazilian think tank founded by former secretary of Agriculture Antonio Cabrera in ... [+] 2021, beats all traditional think tanks in number of Instagram followers. One of its main goals is tax reduction and showing the contribution of the agricultural sector to Brazilian prosperity.

I have been ranking think tanks’ social media impact since 2014 . The most subjective part of this effort is determining which organizations qualify as being in favor of a free economy. I have spent my career, often in leadership positions, supporting think tanks and other pro-free society organizations in the United States and around the globe. I draw on this experience to make my selections for these rankings.

Based on the most up-to-date open-source information available, these are my rankings as a Forbes contributor; they are not an official Forbes ranking. As usual, I ask readers to notify me if they know of a pro-free society organization performing better than those on the list.

For the first time since I started compiling these rankings, the Heritage Foundation achieved the top position among traditional U.S. think tanks on all the social media platforms I consider. When we include international groups, Fe & Trabalho, a relatively small Brazilian think tank founded in 2021, ranks first in Instagram followers, even ahead of mighty Heritage.

Below are the free-market think tanks scoring first or second in the United States and from around the world (data compiled during the last week of March and first week of April 2024):

· Most Facebook likes (U.S.): #1 Heritage (1,900K) #2 Acton Institute (742K); (Non-U.S.): #1 Instituto Millenium, Brazil (403K) #2 Fundación para el Progreso, Chile (273K)

· Most X followers (U.S.): #1 Heritage Foundation (693K) #2 Cato Institute (366K); (Non U.S.): #1 México Evalúa (142K) #2 CEDICE, Venezuela (119K)

· Most monthly visitors to the website (statistics compiled from SimilarWeb) (U.S.): #1 Heritage (1,800K) #2 Cato Institute (990K); (Non-U.S.): #1 Fraser Institute, Canada (196K) #2 Instituto Rothbard (195K).

· Most subscribers to YouTube (U.S.): #1 Heritage (413K) #2 FEE (312K); (Non-U.S.): #1 Fundación para el Progreso, Chile (251K) #2 Fundación Libertad y Progreso, Argentina (139K)

· Most views of YouTube video (longer than 2 minutes) uploaded in past twelve months (U.S.): #1 Heritage (6,600K) #2 Acton (2,900K); (Non-U.S.): #1 Fundación Para el Progreso, Chile (229K) #2 Fundación Libertad y Progreso, Argentina (132K)

· Most LinkedIn Followers (U.S.): #1 Heritage (81K) # 2 Cato (52K); (Non-U.S.); #1 Fraser Institute, Canada (22K) #2 Centro de Estudios Públicos, Chile (15K)

· Instagram followers (U.S.): #1 Heritage (256K) #2 FEE (64K); (Non-U.S.): #1 Fe & Trabalho, Brazil (268K) #2 Instituto Mises, Brazil (171K)

Groups that excel in some areas, such as video production, continue to win year after year. Fundación Para el Progreso in Chile and Fundación Libertad y Progreso in Argentina again ranked among the top two in the world. The Chilean think tank did well on most platforms, which is even more impressive considering Chile’s population is under 20 million, much smaller than other countries with several think tanks competing for influence.

2024 free-market think tanks, followers on X, Linkedln, and Instagram, Facebook likes, You Tube ... [+] subscriptions, and SimilarWeb monthly traffic. Top video, longer than 2 minutes, during past 12 months (late March to late March). All in thousands

As the following numbers show, traditional think tanks have considerably less social media impact on most platforms than organizations that focus on videos, news, and films.

World leaders in video, news outlets, and magazines include:

· Most Facebook likes: #1 PragerU (4,500K) #2 CNSNews (2,200K)

· Most X followers: #1 PragerU (991K) #2 BrasilParalelo (835K)

· Most monthly visitors to the website (SimilarWeb): #1 National Review (7,000K) #2 Reason (3,200K)

· Most subscribers to YouTube Channel: #1 BrasilParalelo (3,800K) #2 PragerU (3,200K)

· Most views of YouTube video (2 minutes or longer) uploaded in last 12 months: #1 PragerU (4,300K) #2 Daily Signal (4,300K)

· Most Instagram followers: #1 BrasilParalelo (2,900K) #2 PragerU (2,200K)

Magazine and media focused organizations followers on X, Linkedln, and Instagram, Facebook likes, ... [+] You Tube subscriptions, and SimilarWeb monthly traffic. Top video, longer than 2 minutes, during past 12 months (late March to late March). All in thousands. Competition (for comparison purposes): leading organizations where promoting free-markets is not a major focus.

BrasilParalelo's reach continues to be impressive; it is now ahead of PragerU in Instagram and YouTube subscribers. This is despite Brazil's population being over one-third smaller than the United States, and English is a much more widely used language than Portuguese. Like other pro-free-market and conservative organizations, BrasilParalelo has been suffering from the pressures of a politicized supreme court that discourages it from producing programs on some controversial current political and economic issues.

Instituto Mises Brazil and Instituto Millenium are also among the top think tanks in the world on several social media platforms. Most impressive is Fe & Trabalho (Faith and Work), which became the think tank with the most Instagram followers in the world in just a few years. Fe & Trabalho promotes low taxation and regulation, describes the importance of the Brazilian agricultural sector, and focuses on defending a Christian view of competitive and free economies. For those who want to learn more about the role of social media in promoting a free society in Brazil, a doctoral dissertation by Alexandre Gonçalves, Social Media and the Rise of the New Right in Brazil , completed in 2023 at Columbia University and due for publication, is the most thorough analysis I have ever read on how Brazilian organizations and intellectuals have used social media to influence a country.

Although in recent years we have seen a huge increase in the number of university-based centers that promote a free economy, most have yet to achieve a significant presence in social media. The Hoover Institution (at Stanford University), with its impressive number of past and present scholars and online material, continues to dominate. Mercatus Center (at George Mason University) ranks second among pro-free-market university-based centers. Mercatus continues to conduct market studies and support the online educational website Marginal Revolution University (MRU). It also goes beyond economics and expands its focus with efforts such as its Program on Pluralism and Civil Exchange . Its budget, close to $50 million during these past years, puts it among the top ten best-funded think tanks favorable to a free economy.

Think tanks and public interest legal groups focusing on legal defense, legal training, investigations, and judicial activism continue growing fast. This year I am placing Judicial Watch in the same category as other legal defense and advocacy groups. The rule of law is essential for a free economy, and Alliance Defending Freedom (ADFLegal) entered economic discussions with its program about attacks on free enterprise by the advocates of replacing growth and profit measurements with environmental, social, and governance measurements (ESG ), as defined arbitrarily by activists. Last year they presented their work at the Mont Pelerin Society’s special meeting held in Bretton Woods. Judicial Watch and ADFLegal have budgets similar in size to Heritage, all close to $100 million. Although Project Veritas maintained the social media impact it achieved under James O’Keefe, its past leader, its future is unclear. I include Veritas in the table, but due to the uncertainties, although they would still rank as second in their category, I opted for ranking Alliance Defending Freedom, rather than Veritas, as second to Judicial Watch. O’Keefe Media Group already has twice the number of followers on X as Project Veritas (2.3 million versus 1.1 million).

Pro free-market organizations and their followers on X, Linkedln, and Instagram, Facebook likes, You ... [+] Tube subscriptions, and SimilarWeb monthly traffic. Top video, longer than 2 minutes, during past 12 months (late March to late March). All in thousands

U.S. judicial defense and rule of law organizations (data compiled during the last week of March 2024):

· Most Facebook likes: #1 Judicial Watch (7,000K) #2 ADFLegal (1,700K)

· Most X followers: #1 Judicial Watch (2,100K) #2 ADFLegal (84K)

· Most monthly visitors to the website (SimilarWeb): #1 Judicial Watch (1,133K) #2 Institute for Justice (224K)

TikTok, Podcasts and Independent Voices

The Heritage Foundation has led an effort to discourage TikTok from being used as a platform. Only a few leading free-market think tanks, usually in the libertarian camp, use TikTok. Among traditional think tanks, Acton Institute is the leader (29,000), FEE is second (19,000), and Cato (4,000) is third. The Institute for Justice (21,000) and Reason (18,000) also use TikTok.

Some conservative groups, like Judicial Watch and Voz Media in the U.S., Brasil Paralelo in Brazil, and the more libertarian Fundación Para el Progreso in Chile, are active on this controversial but popular platform.

Podcast numbers are more difficult to quantify; Chartable is one of the few resources for those who want to check the popularity of podcasts. Most think tanks have podcasts, but only some can compete with the leading stars in this market, such as Joe Rogan, Tucker Carlson, and Ben Shapiro. None of these, however, focuses on economics. Among those who do, I doubt anyone has more followers than John Stossel. He attracts one million followers on X, 938K on YouTube, and 147K on Instagram.

Some popular conservative hosts, such as Mark Levin and Charlie Kirk, have led organizations that defend private property and continue to be associated with them. Levin is Chairman of the Landmark Legal Foundation, and Kirk is founder and president of Turning Point USA. I have rankings but do not have listener numbers for their podcasts, but on X, Mark Levin has 4 million followers, while Landmark Legal has 515, making it almost nonexistent. Kirk has 2.9 million followers on X, while Turning Point has 659K.

In 2023, Heritage, the leader in other platforms, produced 781 podcast episodes across six shows: The Kevin Roberts Show, Heritage Explains, The Daily Signal Podcast, Heard at Heritage, Problematic Women , and SCOTUS 101 . Across all shows, Heritage had 3.48 million downloads. Rob Bluey, former VP of Communications and now Executive Editor of Heritage’s Daily Signal reports that their podcast grew 3.6% year-over-year, with 2,748,401 listens. Two of Heritage’s podcasts peaked in the top 5 of their categories: The Daily Signal Podcast at No. 3 in news and The Kevin Roberts Show at No. 1 in government. Other think tanks and efforts scoring well include The Manhattan Institute, with its City Journal’s ten blocks , First Things, of the Institute for Religion in Public Life, and Capitalisn’t of the University of Chicago. Capitalisn’t is hosted by a renowned economist, Luigi Zingales, and Bethany McLean. It focuses on the many barriers that impede the free economy from producing its natural fruits. Capitalisn’t podcast has high Chartable rankings in many countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Spain.

Some leading conservative and free-market stars abroad also worked at think tanks, but social media allowed them to become one-person shows. Argentinian political philosopher Agustín Laje, with 1.1 million followers on Instagram, 2.24 million on YouTube, and 816K on X, is a prime example. Spaniard Juan Ramón Rallo trails with 110K followers on Instagram, 695K on YouTube, and 431K on X. Chilean Axel Kaiser, Chairman of Fundación Para el Progreso, attracts 241K on Instagram, 90K on YouTube, and 325K on X. Axel Kaiser also hosts one of the top podcasts in Chile, with a good following in Argentina.

Social media is only one way individuals and organizations try to influence public policy. Most think tanks spend considerable money growing their presence on different platforms. More than likely, most of those reading my analysis are consumers, supporters, or both of think tanks and organizations favorable to a free economy. I hope this analysis sheds some light on how think tanks invest their time and dollars to increase their impact.

Salman Rushdie's memoir 'Knife' recounts his attack and recovery

Random House

In 2022, the author Salman Rushdie was onstage at a public event when a man ran up and stabbed him. His new memoir, Knife , delves into that moment when Rushdie thought he was going to die — and everything that's come after, as he's healed from the attack. In today's episode, he speaks at length with NPR's Mary Louise Kelly about how the miracles found in his fiction might've manifested themselves in his real life, how his wife – poet Rachel Eliza Griffiths – has helped him move forward, and how writing about that experience became a way for him to fight back.
