• Greeting - Attention Getter - The Hook You'll need an opening statement or rhetorical  question to sit your audience up with open ears and minds. For more see: How to write a speech introduction: 12 of the best ways to start.  
• Who you are - your name, your place or grade in the school, and maybe, your hobbies or interests, and the clubs or teams you're a member of. For example, Amnesty International, the speech and debate club, cross-country and basketball. And if you've used a campaign slogan work it in. It'll jog people's memories. 'Ah, yes, that person!', they'll think. Being known and familiar gives you a head start.
• What you want - the role you are campaigning for: President, Vice President,  Treasurer, Secretary, Historian...
• What you are going to do for the audience - benefits to them in exchange for their vote. (Brief summary -you will expand this in the body of your speech.)
• Credibility - your qualification or expertise establishing your fitness for the role you want. (Brief summary - you will expand this in the body of your speech.)
• Transition leading to...
• Your Main Idea 1 - For example: your goal for the role, what you want to achieve, how you plan to do it, the benefits to your audience - what painful problem(s) will you solve for them, your fitness for the job, transition to...

NB. Only include a second and third idea if you have time to expand on them. If not, move through to the conclusion.

Points to consider BEFORE you write your speech

Research the role

Think about your audience, what tone or choice of vocabulary is best suited to them.

Avoid trying to impress with either 'big' words or use of slang. Both are traps! Be yourself. Authentic. Real.

Keep your language conversational rather than overly formal and use smaller rather than large sentences.

Try using active rather than passive words. These convey enthusiasm. For examples, see this page on using action verbs . You'll discover how to go from boring bla bla bland to dynamic excitement.

What 'hook' will you use to get them to listen? Humor? Humor is good if it is relevant and inclusive rather than exclusive. (No 'in' jokes!).

Your goal in the role you want

Avoid setting up expectations that you will deliver beyond your capability. :-)

It might be very tempting, but can you really reduce school hours, increase academic standards, introduce a range of exciting new extracurricular activities, as well as have a 'green day' and a movie night every month? Please keep it real!

Your credibility or qualifications

Now is not the time either to be shy or arrogantly big-headed! Let the audience know how right you are for the role you want.

Set yourself apart from other candidates by sharing compelling personal stories or anecdotes that both support your pitch, and show you understand the key issues that matter to your fellow students.

Your school's requirements

If your speech does not meet pre- established criteria in any way you may find it is returned to you edited. It's safer to find out what those criteria are BEFORE writing to avoid having to re-write or worse, being disqualified entirely.

Mockery and personal insults are not clever. They boomerang back on you, letting your audience know you're not to be trusted and neither are you ready for leadership.

Readily acknowledging the skill and expertise of your fellow candidates sincerely in a way that doesn't demean yourself, or them, shows an open mind and maturity.

Aim to have your speech ready BEFORE the deadline.

Give yourself time to prepare thoroughly, including time to review of your opponents' campaigns. That can be very useful for seeing their strengths as well as their weaknesses, which you can then respond to in your own material.

Student Council President speech example 

Here's a sample student council speech. I've written it from the perspective of someone running for President.

As you read it, imagine it said aloud. That will help you get the rhythm and flow of language. The speech is between 3 - 4 minutes long, depending on how quickly you speak.

Vote Sophia Clarke for Student Council President

"I’ve got a question for you. I’m not asking you to shout your answer out, or raise your hand. All I’m asking is that you give it room in your mind. Let it sit for a bit, and have a think about it.

My question is – do you believe like I do, that all of us deserve the opportunity to make the best of ourselves? Not second best, 3 rd , or even, highly commended. The BEST.

I’m Sophia Clarke. I’m in the 12 th  grade, and I’m running for president. My vision is that each student is enabled to develop the skills and confidence to become the bigger, better version of themselves. The best they can be.  Regardless of who they are, and what they need to achieve that.

It’s an audacious goal. Some would say an idealistic, rather than a realistic, one.

However I say it’s awesome. And that you’re intelligent people who realize that reaching any goal starts with taking the first step.

So let me remind you why choosing me, Sophia Clarke, for president, is also choosing a better chance for yourself, and everyone else to grow.

I know you, and I know your needs well. I’ve served on your behalf in multiple roles through my years here; secretary, auditor, public relations officer, and have successfully taken on multiple issues. You’ll know some of those through directly benefiting from them.

It was me who was behind the push to get a regular anti-bullying program running throughout the school. That was two years ago, and now the  Teens Against Bullying  message underpins what we expect and strive for in our every day dealings with each other.

We know incidents of bullying are far fewer as a result. As our orange tee shirts say we ‘choose kindness, acceptance and inclusion’ for each other, and our selves.

Who has been involved in our mentoring-homework program? Either as a buddy-tutor or as a student getting a helping hand? And who, like me, is passionate about making sure that everybody gets a fair go?

In the past year, under my watch that program has escalated. We have over 50% more tutors across more subject areas and more students taking up the offer of help. That is a fabulous outcome for everybody. Truly win-win.

A tick in the box alongside my name is a tick for the continued growth of those programs. Their value is proven. They allow each of us to grow and experience the strength and confidence that comes from knowing that we can make a positive difference in other people’s lives as well as our own.

When you vote me for President you get my capacity to organize, to liaise, to listen and to speak, working for the benefit of everybody.

A 'yes' for me is a 'yes' for appreciating and celebrating diversity.

A 'yes' for me, Sophia Clarke for President, is 'yes' to a better you.

And together that is a 'yes' to a better life, and a better school, for all of us."

Student Council Vice President speech example

Like the speech above, this one runs to approximately 4 minutes when said aloud. Try it and see.

Nod your head if you've heard of the phrase '2nd fiddle' or '2IC'.

What about 'sidekick'?

Not booting a ball in from a sideline but a trusty partner to whoever it is who has the leading role. Like Robin is for Batman.

Or like, {name of your country's Vice President or Prime Minister} is for {name of country's President or Prime Minister} or {name of your school's Vice Principal} is for {name of your school's Principal}!

Well, that's what I aspire to - to become the trusty, tried and true sidekick to the President on our student council.

My name is Jason Hull. I'm in Grade 12 and proudly standing in front of you today as a candidate for the role of Vice President. Yes, I am asking you to give me something of immense value - your vote.

I know what the issues, here at {name of school} are. As part of my campaign, I've interviewed you, and listened. I promise your ideas will be acted on.

Afterall I've trained for this role, put in the time. You know, I know how to get things done.

Last year I served as Secretary and the year before that I was a representative for the committee - proof that I'm committed to bettering our school environment not just for you, but for everybody!

With your support, I'll be your go-to guy when you want to make sure that your opinions and feedback reach the decision-makers.

One of my main goals as your Vice President is to champion your initiatives: amongst others, that's the library extensions you told me about, the desire for healthier food choices in our cafeteria, and the urgent need to increase and diversify the workforce and out-reach opportunities that so many of you mentioned.

Whether you're passionate about improving our school facilities, or enhancing our community involvement, I'll be there to guide and help you. 

In the role of Vice President, I will work alongside the President fulfilling my duties to the best of my ability. 

Together, we'll make sure that your concerns, and hopes are not just heard but actively pursued. Not 'I' will make sure, but 'we'.

There is no 'I' in we, and that too, is a prerequisite of the Vice President's position: the capacity to put aside ego and to work productively for the good of all.

Because together, we, the Vice President, the President and the other council members, are stronger and can achieve more.

The Vice President role may be a support act but it's a vital one.  To succeed in it, collaboration is key. I promise to work hand in hand not only with the President but also with the entire student council team, our teachers, and our administration on your behalf.

Unity is strength. More than ever, we need to nurture understanding, kindness and respect for each other. Regardless of your grade, interests, or background, I want every one of you to feel valued and heard.

That's a goal many would say is impossible.

However, I say, we need to be the difference we want to see in the world. And to borrow those famous words of Helen Keller's: "Alone we can do so little. Together we can so much."

It would be an honor to be your voice, your eyes and your ears as Vice President.

So, I ask you, will you trust me to have your best interests at heart? Will you enable me to work on your behalf?

And are you willing to give me, Jason Hull, your vote for best sidekick, aka. Vice President?

After you've finished writing your speech

Now that you've finished writing, you're ready to begin work on your delivery: how you present the speech to your audience.

The first step in that process is making sure your speech fits comfortably into whatever time you've been allocated.

After that comes rehearsal. The information you need for both steps is below.

Timing and word count

Student Council Speeches are generally brief: around 1-4 minutes long which isn't a lot of time! That's between approximately 150 - 600 words at an average speaking rate of 150 words per minute.

To be safe say your speech out loud as if you were delivering it for real and time it. In some schools going overtime can result in being disqualified.

Going faster to fit everything in

Please do not be tempted to say it faster to get everything you planned said. As a strategy it doesn't work. You'll end up gabbling: speaking far too quickly and people won't be able to understand what you're saying.

Cutting out extra material

If you have got too much material for the time limit, cut it. Choose the least important ideas to let go of first. Then move on to rephrasing to reduce the number of words used to express a point.

When you think it's done, repeat the test. Say it out loud as if you were actually giving it, and time it.

If you're now within the allotted time, you are ready for rehearsal.

How to rehearse your speech

Please, please  rehearse your speech ! Do not be tempted to wing it. The more you rehearse the easier it will be to deliver it well.

Remember it is only 1 to 4 minutes long! In that time your goal is to have your audience ready to vote for you.

You can help them make that decision by being confident and prepared. You will show that through:

• your speaking style  - natural, sincere, fluent, understandable (clear and able to be heard without straining)
• your body language  - relaxed, open gestures, good eye contact and smiling
• your personal grooming or presentation  because how you look 'speaks' too. Make sure that your clothing and general grooming supports your speech because, like it or not, you will be judged on both!

1. A pleasant morning to all my friends who are present here. As we are aware, today is school election day. The fact that you are here shows that I have your support.

2. The decision to contest the student council election was challenging. But If you aspire to help the people around you, solve their problems and work for their interests.

3. A school provides the first opportunity to give wings to your dreams.

4. We all are fortunate to study in this excellent school where students have ample opportunities to explore, expand and excel.

5. Being a student takes work; becoming a school leader will take a lot of work.

6. But I assure you, if I win the election, I will work for the benefit of all of us.

7. If you would like the school to introduce an introductory Artificial Intelligence course as a vocational subject or provide excellent quality food in the canteen, I will vouch for that.

Once Abraham Lincoln said, "Of the people, by the people, for the people." This describes the essence of democracy; in a democratic country, people can choose their government by themselves without any pressure.

Elections are the best tool if they are used relatively and no malpractice is allowed. Candidates should remember this if people have the right to choose them and will enable them to run the government, and if they don't, then they can be overthrown as well by the people. They are free to vote for any candidate according to their preferences.

Election gives us the power to choose the best leader in every session. If one is not performing up to the mark, he can be replaced in the next voting session. An election is an excellent opportunity for people to voice their dissatisfaction. People can replace undesirable leadership with a better alternative through the election.

With my experience and passion, I could be a great leader. I promise to do my best to curb bullying, increase student interest in school and increase overall academic achievement.

Firstly, let me thank you all for your presence here today. As you all know that I am running for the Presidential post in the upcoming school council election, I would like to use this opportunity to share my views about the kind of work I would love to do for the welfare of the school and the students.

"Of the people, by the people, for the people," stated Abraham Lincoln once. This sums up democracy in its most basic terms; citizens make their own, pressure-free decisions about their government. Same way, students can make these decisions to elect a candidate for the presidential post for the school student council.

As a student, I feel that education is not just the pillar of success for us. We all need good services, be it infrastructure, adequate counseling, focus on extracurricular activities, and vocational courses on personality development. Being a student takes work; becoming a student leader is challenging. Today, I am feeling the same while addressing you and asking for your support in the election.

If I Get Elected

It is rightly said, “with great power comes great responsibility”.

If I get elected, my first work would be to improve the sanitation and hygiene of the students. I shall ensure that our playground and the parking lot are appropriately maintained and sanitized. I am also considering seeking confirmation from the administration to allow two game periods a day, considering the workload we have.

We are thinking of implementing a photography course and piano classes as vocational subjects in the coming days, and our team is working hard to achieve all these goals. If given this opportunity, I shall fight for equality, justice, and transparency for our student council, where every student gets a chance to raise their voice.

Sadhguru once said, "Integrity, Insight, and Inclusiveness are the three essential leadership qualities". We also believe in the same principle of leading an organization or a system, where our sole aim is to take care of the interests of the students of our school so that they get the best education, health, and hygiene facilities. All these factors are essential for their overall development, as well as for the school's progress too.

Our focus is not just on academic progress, but we also have our priorities set on co-curricular activities and sports. We plan to allocate more coaches in games like volleyball, cricket, football, badminton etc to all sports enthusiasts who want to pursue a career in this field.

With my experience and passion, I think I could be a great leader. Friends, I also believe in working as a team, and fighting for justice, whenever the need arises. Together with me, let us work for the well-being of the student and the school. Choose your vote wisely, and may the best person win.

Yes, there are school election speech templates on the internet that let you just paste in your name, etc., [1] but a speech written by you, that represents you, holds a much better chance of making an impact on your classmates/voters. If you take the time to write a speech that presents a clear, concise message in an engaging manner that reflects your individual personality, you might just win, and regardless, you'll know you gave it your best shot.

Crafting Your Message

• Right now, it doesn’t matter if your ideas are not feasible or even downright silly — your desire to outlaw homework on weekends, for instance — just put them down on paper.
• Then, start to whittle down your list to about three to five key points of emphasis — adding healthy food options at lunch, expanding a tutoring program, or working to reduce bullying, perhaps — and think about how they connect to your overall plan as a candidate.
• Slogans don’t just fit nicely on campaign signs, they provide a quick glimpse of your personality and your plans.
• They can be lighthearted (“The Right Manuel for the Job”) or serious (“Your Voice for Change”), focused on one issue (“Save the Spring Formal”) or aimed more broadly (“Let’s Fly Higher Together”). The slogan should suit you, make people think of you when they hear or see it, and give them an idea of how you’ll serve their interests.
• When writing a slogan, avoid negative language. The best slogans are positive and forward-thinking.
• First things first, find out how much time you have to give your speech. School election speeches are often limited to only 1-2 minutes, which is only about 150-250 words. [4] If so, you need to be laser-focused on what you want to say and how you want to say it. You may have to further cut down your campaign ideas to two or three, or maybe even just one for the speech.
• Even if you don’t have a short time limit, people rarely complain that speeches are too short. Don’t waste time on unreasonable promises, unnecessary details, or anything else that detracts from the directness of your message.
• Establish the need you see, what you believe can be done to address it, and why you are the person to do it. [5]
• You might just assume that the popular kids win all the school elections, but often it is the person who seems most genuinely interested in doing the job who earns the most votes. It is easier to express that enthusiasm when being true to who you are.
• Your English teacher won’t be grading your speech text, so utilize a more conversational tone and worry less about grammar rules. Use short sentences and even sentence fragments to keep your message fresh and clear throughout the speech. [7]
• You need to build a rapport, a sense of connection, with the audience very quickly and hold it throughout the speech. Slogans and simply-stated goals suit this need, and so too does a speech that doesn’t lose the audience along the way with long or complicated sentences, jargon, or unnecessary asides.

Structuring Your Speech

• Give a few details about why you're the right person for the position. This doesn't have to be your whole resume, but a solid detail or two about your past responsibilities or personal traits will help you "sell" yourself as the right candidate. [8]
• Plant your slogan in this introduction. Make them associate that phrase with you and the plans you are about to lay out in the body of the speech.
• Something as simple as “Hi. I’m Jane Thomas, and I want to be your class president because I am dedicated to ‘Making Butler High Better Together’” can work.
• Or, if better suited to your personality: “Some people say that Leon Lawson is too wild and not serious enough to be vice-president. Well, I am Leon Lawson, and I say that I’m ‘Seriously Wild’ about shaking things up in our student government.”
• This is one of your chances to build a rapport with your audience. You want them to feel like all of you are on the same page, facing the same issues, and seeking solutions together.
• For instance: “Bullying is an epidemic at Adams High School. Odds are that you have been bullied, seen someone being bullied, or even been a bully yourself. We can all do better.”
• When stating the issue, avoid mudslinging or negative comments aimed at a particular person or group. Even when you're talking about something you want to change, keep your comments framed positively. This will reflect well on your candidacy and encourage others to see you as someone dedicated to fixing issues, not blaming others for them.
• If you’re running for re-election or have held a different office, talk about a few things you have done and a few you will do. Make it clear how they all link together. For example, "As my time as President of Spanish Club shows, I can manage a team of people to achieve common goals. I will use this experience in pursuing change at our school."
• Make your actions sound active. Use active verbs to describe what you have done/will do. Some examples include: “pursue,” “follow,” “take up,” “initiate,” “present,” “represent,” “create,” “build,” and “lead.” [9]
• Go back to your slogan somewhere in the brief conclusion. Such repetition can help tie everything together.
• For example: “We all know that there are too many cliques and factions that divide us as students here at West Branch High. This Friday, please consider voting for me, Ben Davis, for student council. I’ll make it my number one job to bring all West Branch Eagles together so we can ‘Fly High as One.’”
• Consider, perhaps, a simple sentence near the end along the lines of: “I have several additional ideas for ways to bring back more Tiger pride to our school, and I would love to hear your ideas as well.”

Preparing for Delivery

• Practice in front of a mirror, in front of your cat, and in front of anyone who will listen. Record yourself and play it back to get a better sense of your tone and pace.
• If permitted, practice giving the speech in the location where you will present the real one. Get a feel for the room and the podium so you’ll be that much more comfortable come speech day. [9]
• Practice your speech often enough that you only need to have some notes for reference. Look down only occasionally, as needed, and practice looking around the room. You don’t necessarily have to make direct eye contact with anyone, just make it seem as though you are.
• You also, however, don’t want to sound as though you have simply memorized every word of your speech and are now regurgitating it. You want to know the speech, not just the words, so that you can seamlessly adjust to a misstated phrase or an unexpected opportunity during the speech.
• You want to be “real,” to look and act like the fellow student the audience knows — maybe just an extra-polished, comfortable, and confident version of your “real” self.
• Rely on whatever relaxation techniques work for you to get ready for your performance. If that means employing the old trick of imagining the audience naked, go for it — maybe just watch who you tell about having used it!

How to Write a Campaign Speech for Kids

How to give an annual day speech in school.

Writing a campaign speech for kids isn't all child's play. Children are smart and informed voters, and can tell when you are lying about giving out free chocolate every Friday after you are elected. Your speech has to stand out and catch their attention, usually in under two minutes. Writing a good and appropriate children's campaign speech increases your chances for winning the election.

Start off with a good, clean, short joke. The children hear speech after speech and are going to start to tune out what is said. You need to say something to catch their attention. Getting them to laugh will give them a little break.

Introduce yourself and declare the office that you are running for. Not making yourself known could be a big mistake later when the children are voting and remember who you are.

Talk about what you will do if elected. Everyone has ideas about how the school could be run better — maybe more vending machines in the cafeteria, maybe off-campus lunches, maybe getting to wear shorts on Friday. Tell your peers how you will work hard to change things for the better.

Thank the students for their time. Remember to be gracious and to treat the audience and the other candidates alike.

Keep the speech short. Usually, you will be given a time limit of up to two minutes. Make sure that you do not run over or you could be disqualified.

• Coin a slogan that you can use on your posters and in your speech.
• Do not make any promises that you are not willing to keep. Nobody likes a liar.

Trump's comments on Jews who vote for Democrats draw outrage

New York — Former President Donald Trump on Monday charged that Jews who vote for Democrats "hate Israel" and "their religion," igniting a firestorm of criticism from the White House and Jewish leaders.

Trump, in an interview, had been asked about Democrats' growing criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his handling of the war in Gaza as the civilian death toll continues to mount.

"I actually think they hate Israel," Trump responded to his former aide, Sebastian Gorka. "I think they hate Israel. And the Democrat Party hates Israel."

Trump, who last week became the Republican Party's presumptive nominee , went on to claim, "Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion. They hate everything about Israel and they should be ashamed of themselves because Israel will be destroyed."

The comments sparked immediate backlash from the White House, President Biden's campaign and Jewish leaders.

The vast majority of Jewish Americans identify as Democrats, but Trump has often accused them of disloyalty , perpetuating what critics say is an antisemitic trope.

At the White House, spokesperson Andrew Bates cast the comments as "vile and unhinged Antisemitic rhetoric" without mentioning Trump by name.

"As Antisemitic crimes and acts of hate have increased across the world - among them the deadliest attack committed against the Jewish people since the Holocaust — leaders have an obligation to call hate what it is and bring Americans together against it," he said. "There is no justification for spreading toxic, false stereotypes that threaten fellow citizens. None."

Mr. Biden's campaign said, "The only person who should be ashamed here is Donald Trump."

"Trump is going to lose again this November because Americans are sick of his hateful resentment, personal attacks, and extreme agenda," said spokesman James Singer. 

The former president doubled down on Tuesday when speaking to reporters in Palm Beach, Florida, after voting in the state's primary election.

"I think that the Democrats have been very, very opposed to Jewish people. That's true, and to Israel," Trump said. "We're doing very well with the Jewish voter, it looks like, and we should do very well. If you look at all of our presidents, they're saying Trump was the best for Israel, by far the best for Israel."

Jonathan Greenblatt, who heads the Anti-Defamation League, said, "Accusing Jews of hating their religion because they might vote for a particular party is defamatory & patently false."

"Serious leaders who care about the historic US-Israel alliance should focus on strengthening, rather than unraveling, bipartisan support for the State of Israel," he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Halie Soifer, CEO of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, said, "Another day, another depraved antisemitic screed from Donald Trump, who has repeatedly vilified the overwhelming majority of American Jews. He first called us 'uninformed or disloyal' in 2019 and essentially repeated it today. The feeling is mutual."

On Tuesday, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska who has clashed with the former president in the past , also joined the chorus of criticism. "That is incredibly, incredibly wrong and, and an awful statement," she said. 

Trump's comments come as Mr. Biden has been facing mounting pressure from the progressive wing of his party over his administration's support for Israel in its retaliatory offensive in Gaza. More than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory.

While Mr. Biden continues to back Israel's right to defend itself, he has increasingly criticized Netanyahu. After his State of the Union address , he said he needed to have a "come to Jesus" conversation with the Israeli leader. He has also accused Netanyahu of "hurting Israel more than helping Israel," saying, "he must pay more attention to the innocent lives being lost as a consequence of the actions taken."

The president and Netanyahu spoke on Monday for the first time in more than a month. The White House says Mr. Biden "reiterated his deep concerns about the prospect of Israel conducting a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than one million displaced civilians are currently seeking shelter after fleeing fighting in the north." Netanyahu also agreed to send a team of Israeli officials to Washington to discuss with Biden administration officials a prospective Rafah operation, according to White House and national security adviser Jake Sullivan.

Trump took particular issue with recent comments from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the country's highest-ranking Jewish elected official. In a speech last week, Schumer sharply criticized Netanyahu's handling of the war in Gaza, warning that the civilian toll was damaging Israel's standing around the world. He also called for Israel to hold new elections.

While the White House formally distanced itself from Schumer's comments, the Democratic leader and key ally was voicing an opinion increasingly held across Mr. Biden's administration.

Schumer — a longtime supporter of Israel whom Trump accused of being "very anti-Israel now" — responded by accusing Trump of "making highly partisan and hateful rants."

"To make Israel a partisan issue only hurts Israel and the US-Israeli relationship," he wrote on X.

The Pew Research Center reported in 2021 that Jews are "among the most consistently liberal and Democratic groups in the U.S.," with 7 in 10 Jewish adults identifying with or leaning toward the Democratic Party. In 2020, it found that nearly three-quarters of American Jews disapproved of Trump's performance as president, with just 27% rating him positively.

Americans have also increasingly soured on Israel's military operation in Gaza, according to surveys from The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. In January, 50% of U.S. adults said the military response from Israel in the Gaza Strip had gone too far, up from 40% in November.

That number was higher among Democrats, 6 in 10 of whom said the same thing in both surveys.

A pair of entrenched Democratic Chicago congressmen easily fended off bids for their seats Tuesday night as U.S. Rep. Danny Davis maintained his grip on the West Side district he’s represented for nearly three decades, and U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García brushed aside the first primary challenge of his congressional career.

With 71% of votes counted in the 7th Congressional District, Davis had 53% of the vote compared to 22% for Chicago City Treasurer Melissa Conyears-Ervin and 18% for progressive activist Kina Collins, according to Associated Press estimates.

Teacher Nikhil Bhatia had about 5%, and Kouri Marshall, a former deputy director to Gov. J.B. Pritzker, had 3%.

With 58% of votes counted in the 4th Congressional District, which stretches from the Southwest Side to Oak Brook and other west suburbs, García had 69% of the vote over 31% for Ald. Raymond Lopez (15th).

Both contests were called barely an hour after the polls closed.

A defiant Davis called out critics who'd said he was "getting scared" in his five-way race , claiming the incumbent had to call the "big guns" of the Illinois Democratic Party to help him across the finish line.

"Let me tell you, I helped make the big guns," Davis said to cheers at his campaign headquarters across the street from his East Garfield Park office.

"And all of these prognosticators — all of those who thought the people of my community would not recognize the work that we've done practically all of our adult life — I am so affirmed that the people know the work that we've done," Davis said.

He concluded: "Don't ever write off the senior citizens. Don't write off President Joe Biden, because he's going to lead this country to where it needs to be. And I'll be there right beside him."

Davis raised more than $457,000 and rounded up all the establishment support you would expect for a congressman vying for his 15th consecutive term in the district, which stretches from west suburban Hillside into the Loop and down to the South Side.

Davis was backed by U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Mayor Brandon Johnson, to name just a fraction of the Democratic heavyweights in Davis’ corner.

It was an easier election night for Davis than it was in 2022, when Collins gave him one of the closest primary races of his career, taking 46% of the vote in a three-way race.

In her third challenge, Collins — a 33-year-old Austin native and an organizer for progressive advocacy groups — argued again for a fresher vision for the district. Davis will turn 83 before November’s general election.

Conyears-Ervin led fundraising in the race with more than $619,000, and she also boasted perhaps the biggest progressive boost in the race with the endorsement of the Chicago Teachers Union.

But her campaign was saddled with ethics questions after the city inspector general’s office found she fired two city employees who complained that she used city resources for a prayer service. Conyears-Ervin could still face thousands of dollars in fines pending a city ethics board ruling, but she maintains the allegations “misrepresent” her office.

Declaring victory in the 4th District, García fired off a confetti cannon during his victory speech with supporters in Brighton Park.

“Tonight we showed everyone across the country that are paying close attention to this race, that hate and the right-wing attempt to hijack our movement will not succeed," the longtime progressive leader said. “There’s been a clear attack against immigrants, against women, against African Americans, against Muslims and the LGBTQ community. Our work together will be tough, but we are tougher."

Lopez had challenged García from the right, criticizing him as out of touch with a district redrawn to include Hinsdale and other west suburbs. The challenger called for a tougher crackdown at the Southern U.S. border.

García, a fixture in Chicago politics for four decades as an alderperson, Cook County commissioner, state senator and two-time mayoral candidate, raised more than $487,000 in the campaign to retain the seat he has held since 2019.

Lopez , one of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s most vocal critics, raised about $72,000 for his upstart bid, the first primary challenge García had since taking office.

García doesn’t have any opponents in November’s general election. Davis faces nominal opposition from Republican Chad Koppie.

In many ways, school elections are just like elections anywhere else. [1] X Research source To win over voters, you need to reach out to as many voters as possible. You will also need to work hard to make sure people know who you are, and why they should vote for you.

Deciding to Run

• If you are looking for specific areas that you can improve in your school, talk to authority figures, such as your teachers or the principal, current members of the student government, or even your fellow students.

• Writing a slogan , a short tagline for your campaign, is a great way to keep your ideas short and simple. It can be serious or funny, but make sure it is about you. It needs to remind people who you are, and that they should vote for you.

• Encourage your network to bring in more friends to help. There is nothing wrong with additional support.

Campaigning for Votes

• Not everyone will want to talk to you about the election. That's fine, just let them walk away. You don't want to be pushy or overbearing.
• Don't get so focused on winning over one small group that you forget larger ones. You probably can't win over everyone, so don't be discouraged by the votes you don't get.

• These items are great places to use a slogan if you made one.
• For posters, create and hang as many as possible. Make sure they follow any guidelines the school sets, as you don't want school officials taking them down.
• Buttons and stickers can go on all kinds of items, and schools may not put the same limits on them as they do on posters. You can also pass them out with other small trinkets, which are great ways to help students remember you.

• Stay within the time limits the school gives you. You want to get as many of your ideas out there as you can, but people have short attention spans, and nobody will listen if you talk too long.
• It is a good idea to practice your speech before giving it. Ask your friends if they will listen to you read it out loud. This can help give you the confidence to speak in front of a large group and provide useful feedback.

Gov. Greg Abbott says Texas is two House votes away from passing school vouchers

Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday urged school voucher supporters to make the final push in the May primary runoff elections to bring a pro-school voucher majority to the Texas House.

Delivering the opening speech at an annual conservative policy conference in Austin, Abbott declared that the school voucher movement was “on the threshold of success” after the March 5 primary. The election saw several anti-voucher Republican incumbents lose to pro-voucher challengers, putting pro-voucher members on the verge of a majority in the Texas House, the last legislative roadblock to the policy.

“We are now at 74 votes in favor of school choice in the state of Texas. Which is good, but 74 does not equal 76,” Abbott said, referring to the number of votes he needs to pass the bill into law. “We need two more votes.”

The Texas Public Policy Foundation, which hosts the annual Texas Policy Summit where Abbott spoke, embarked with Abbott more than a year ago on a “parent empowerment” campaign to bring school vouchers to Texas, holding events across the state to rally voters behind their effort. However, the pro-voucher campaign is running out of time to chip away at the anti-voucher side, as Abbott says the final vote count on school vouchers in next year’s legislative session will be decided in this year’s primary runoffs.

“This is the last big push to get across the finish line,” Abbott said. “If ever there was a time when a public policy organization was going to go all in to make sure that one of its foremost important policies is going to get passed, this is that time.”

The May 28 Republican primary runoffs carry more opportunities for the “school choice” movement to pick up more voucher-supporting members, and Abbott said “we should be able to win that.” However, those votes aren’t guaranteed, and that tally assumes no surprises in the general election in November.

Abbott likened the effort to get a majority to a football game in which the outcome could be decided by a single kick.

“We don’t want to rely upon a field-goal kicker,” Abbott said. “We want to make sure that, when these runoffs are over at the end of May, that we are ahead by more than two points, or three points or four points.”

Abbott’s campaign began as an effort to motivate voters and win legislative support among members. But after the House voted to kill his voucher proposal, he shifted to an election campaign against anti-voucher Republicans. The governor endorsed 11 challengers to anti-voucher incumbents. Abbott backed his most recent endorsee, Katrina Pierson, after she earned a plurality against state Rep. Justin Holland, R-Rockwall, and kicked off his runoff campaign tour on Tuesday at an event supporting Pierson.

House leadership, including Speaker Dade Phelan and the Republican caucus campaign apparatus, are financially backing Holland and his fellow anti-voucher incumbents. However, not everyone in leadership is supporting the anti-voucher members.

At a Texas Policy Summit panel that immediately followed Abbott’s speech, state Rep. Briscoe Cain, R-Deer Park, said he’s tired of “playing nice” on negotiating for anything other than “full universal” vouchers.

“I hope every one of the people that win that runoff are pro-school choice, and if you’re supported by a teacher union, I don’t want you back,” Cain said. “It’s that easy.”

How Trump Is Scrambling to Raise Cash

The former president is facing converging financial crunches as he and the Republican Party confront a shortfall against President Biden and the Democrats.

As many as three nights a week, Donald J. Trump has been hosting private dinners at Mar-a-Lago, schmoozing with some of the Republican Party’s biggest financiers as he races to address a sizable cash shortfall against President Biden.

There is no request for money from the attendees at these meals, which have included Larry Ellison, the billionaire co-founder of Oracle, and Pepe Fanjul, the sugar magnate, according to people familiar with the sessions. But advisers to Mr. Trump’s campaign and his super PACs hope the charm offensive will eventually pay political and financial dividends.

One of the most pressing issues facing Mr. Trump is the financial disparity he and allied groups now face with Mr. Biden and the Democratic Party. Mr. Biden’s campaign announced on Sunday that it entered March with $155 million cash on hand with the party, after raising $53 million in February. The Trump operation has not released a more recent total, but his campaign account and the Republican National Committee had around $40 million at the end of January.

Mr. Trump enters the general election ahead of Mr. Biden in public polls . But Mr. Biden has taken full advantage of one of the benefits of incumbency, both socking away cash and building out a political operation earlier than his challenger.

Despite years of professing massive wealth and boasting of his desire to “drain the swamp,” the deeply transactional former president is leaning yet again on the cash of others, turning Mar-a-Lago into a staging ground for billionaires and others with their own agendas. One potential leverage point with the biggest G.O.P. financiers is the package of tax cuts Mr. Trump signed into law in 2017. Many of those cuts expire at the end of 2025, and Mr. Biden has vowed not to extend them for the nation’s highest earners.

Money often winds up mattering less in presidential races than in down-ballot races. Voters pay attention to the candidates naturally, especially Mr. Trump, and the key states all wind up awash in advertising by the fall.

Yet recent presidential contests have been so excruciatingly close that everything has mattered, and Mr. Trump is preparing to face an especially large avalanche of Democratic spending this year. Just a single union this week announced plans to spend $200 million , ten times what the main Trump super PAC had on hand. A cash edge can help Democrats tilt or expand the battleground map in their favor.

In a sign of the Trump orbit’s urgent need for cash, at least two donors who made seven-figure pledges to support Mr. Trump this year were nudged to see if they could cut an eight-figure check — meaning $10 million or more — instead, according to a person familiar with the request.

It is an unusually perilous moment for Mr. Trump.

The former president is facing converging financial crunches just as he has become the presumptive Republican nominee. The first is the political cash situation. The others are far more personal.

Mr. Trump recently posted a $91.6 million bond in a civil case in which he was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation of the New York writer E. Jean Carroll. He also must summon the resources to post a roughly $450 million bond, the judgment in a New York civil fraud case against his businesses, in the coming days. And he has mounting legal bills as his first criminal trial nears. Mr. Trump’s Save America PAC, which has been paying his lawyers and those of some witnesses, is set to run dry by summer at the current pace of spending.

Some Trump allies predict they will have enough campaign cash to win, even if it’s less than Mr. Biden.

“Hillary Clinton way out-raised President Trump but he connected with the American people and that was the difference right there,” said Tommy Hicks Jr., a former Republican National Committee co-chair and finance director.

Brian Ballard, a Republican lobbyist, fund-raiser and Mar-a-Lago member, said Mr. Trump was “incredibly engaged” in the political money fight.

“He understands the one advantage the Biden campaign has is financial resources,” Mr. Ballard said, adding “and he understands we need to do all we can to negate that.”

To prepare for the fall, Mr. Trump’s advisers have embarked on an aggressive and speedy takeover of the R.N.C. that included installing his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as co-chair, with the intention that she’ll focus in part on shoring up fund-raising. The Trump team imposed mass layoffs in some departments on Monday, and is shipping all of the party’s finance and digital fund-raising staff to the former president’s Florida headquarters by the end of the month.

In a sign of the early Democratic edge, Mr. Biden traveled to Wisconsin this week to promote the 44 party and campaign offices they are opening in the state, at the same time Mr. Trump’s team was laying off or forcing the R.N.C.’s regional political staff to reapply for their jobs.

For now, the Trump operation is ramping up its program for bundlers of midsize donations and planning to conserve cash costs by holding fewer rallies than they did at the end of the primary season.

On Thursday, Mr. Trump formed a new joint fund-raising account with the national party and roughly 40 state parties, calling it the Trump 47 Committee, allowing him to directly raise money in chunks of more than $800,000. A splashy dinner in Palm Beach is being planned in early April to fill the new account’s coffers. One person familiar with the planning said donors have pledged more than $25 million.

Mr. Trump himself is said to be concerned about the fund-raising gap between his orbit and Mr. Biden’s, although he has told advisers that he believes he and his allies will ultimately raise what they need, according to one person with knowledge of the discussions.

But some top donors remain hesitant. Among their privately expressed concerns is a fear that large donations could wind up covering Mr. Trump’s legal fees, even as his advisers have publicly said the R.N.C. won’t do so. Mr. Trump’s main super PAC has, as of January, refunded more than $47 million of the $60 million it had received before the 2024 run began to Mr. Trump’s PAC, which is paying Mr. Trump’s lawyers.

So far, Mr. Trump has reported only a limited well of major contributors during the 2024 race. He has, in the meantime, become increasingly attentive to them.

He recently had a meeting with one of the world’s richest men, Elon Musk, and a brief backstage encounter with Jeff Yass, a billionaire investor in TikTok. Mr. Trump said on CNBC that he and Mr. Yass had not spoken about the company, though he later posted on social media regarding his skepticism about federal legislation that could ban the app, especially if it would benefit the parent company of Facebook.

On Super Tuesday, Mr. Trump’s main super PAC, Make America Great Again Inc., rented out a room at Mar-a-Lago for some of the larger donors to mingle in. Mr. Trump stopped by and thanked some of them, including Trish Duggan, a prominent Florida philanthropist and Scientologist, who has contributed more than $5 million, according to a person who was in the room.

The night he won the New Hampshire primary, Mr. Trump gave shout-outs in his victory speech to the casino magnate Steve Wynn and the hedge fund manager John Paulson, both of whom are billionaires.

“You know what? Put him at Treasury,” Mr. Trump said of Mr. Paulson that night. The April fund-raising dinner, which was first reported by Bloomberg , will be hosted by Mr. Paulson.

On the night of the South Carolina primary, Woody Johnson, the billionaire owner of the New York Jets to whom Mr. Trump gave an ambassadorship during his term, stood behind Mr. Trump.

Another billionaire and regular at Mar-a-Lago, Ike Perlmutter, is supporting a separate super PAC , Right for America, that is being run by Trump ally Sergio Gor. Mr. Trump blessed Mr. Perlmutter’s effort, despite the fact that its existence has caused tension within the broader Trump circle.

The general election cash chasm was apparent in the advertising announced in March.

The main Trump super PAC has purchased about $380,000 in radio advertising targeting Black voters in three states this month. The Biden campaign has announced a $30 million ad campaign over six weeks — a nearly 100 to 1 edge in the first stretch of the race.

That ratio does not include the roughly $500,000 the pro-Trump super PAC spent on an ad that trolled Mr. Biden the day of his State of the Union speech, questioning whether the president would live to 2029, when his second term would end. The provocative commercial exemplifies what underfunded groups typically do: Spend symbolically to generate free media coverage.

Some Republican donors have emphasized that wealthy contributors may write large checks, but they often don’t want to see that fact disclosed, given the controversy that attaches itself to Mr. Trump. A number of donors faced public blowback in 2016 for their support.

An official with the Trump super PAC would not say whether Mr. Yass has given money to the group, but a person close to the campaign said he is expected to make a seven-figure contribution. It’s unclear if that would be to a super PAC or a dark money group that does not have to identify its donors.

After Mr. Musk’s meeting with Mr. Trump was reported, Mr. Musk wrote , “I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.” But should he choose to donate, Mr. Musk, too, could decide to give to an entity in which the money cannot be tracked.

Not everyone is on board just yet.

“Can I just have a moment to be sad over Nikki not being in the race?” the hedge fund executive and G.O.P. financier Ken Griffin said at a conference in Florida this week, referring to Mr. Trump’s last major Republican rival, Nikki Haley. But Mr. Griffin predicted that Mr. Trump would win this fall and left open the possibility of backing him.

The current financial situation is a reversal of the one in 2020.

Back then, it was Mr. Trump who held the White House and had amassed a $187 million advantage by roughly this same point, creating a far larger gap than Mr. Biden has built now. But spending decisions by the Trump team and a deluge of Democratic giving inverted that by the fall .

The Republican National Committee announced that last weekend — the first since Michael Whatley was installed as chairman, and Ms. Trump as co-chair — was its strongest for a fund-raising weekend since 2020. Ms. Trump said on Fox News that she had personally received pledges of $2.7 million.

And a Trump campaign spokeswoman said that February had been its strongest month for small dollar fund-raising of the race. Records show the previous high for online fund-raising was last August, when Mr. Trump raised $22.3 million.

Still, Democratic donors have been pouring money into Mr. Biden’s coffers. The Biden campaign announced it had raised more than $10 million online in the 24 hours after the State of the Union address.

To put that sum in perspective, it more than doubled the biggest day Mr. Trump had in 2023, when his mug shot was released from his Georgia indictment, and he raised $4.2 million online.

Trump says some undocumented immigrants are ‘not people’

The former president also warned of “a bloodbath” if he does not defeat joe biden in november.

VANDALIA, Ohio — Former president Donald Trump ratcheted up his dehumanizing rhetoric against immigrants Saturday by saying that some who are accused of crimes are “not people.”

“I don’t know if you call them people,” he said at a rally near Dayton, Ohio. “In some cases they’re not people, in my opinion. But I’m not allowed to say that because the radical left says that’s a terrible thing to say.”

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, was in Ohio to stump for Senate candidate Bernie Moreno, who is in a tight three-way race for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown. Moreno, a businessman, is facing Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan in Tuesday’s primary.

In his own remarks on immigration Saturday, Moreno said foreigners who come to the United States should learn English.

“We don’t need to vote in five different languages. We learn the language,” said Moreno, a Colombian immigrant, wrongly claiming that English is the national language. “It means you assimilate. You become part of America; America doesn’t become part of you.”

Later in the rally, Trump warned it will be a “bloodbath for the country” if he is not elected. The comment came as he was promising to hike tariffs on foreign-made cars, and it was not clear exactly what Trump was referring to with his admonition.

“Now we’re going to put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that comes across [the] line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those guys — if I get elected,” he said. “Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole. That’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country.”

The Biden campaign characterized the comment as a promise of political violence.

“This is who Donald Trump is: a loser who gets beat by over 7 million votes and then instead of appealing to a wider mainstream audience doubles down on his threats of political violence,” spokesman James Singer said in a statement. “He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge.”

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump’s campaign, said Trump’s remark was not about violence, but rather was an extension of Trump’s comments about imported cars.

“If you actually watch and listen to the section, he was talking about the auto industry and tariffs,” he wrote in an email, adding that “Biden’s policies will create an economic bloodbath for the auto industry and autoworkers.”

Immigration is shaping up to be an explosive issue in the presidential campaign. Trump and President Biden staged dueling visits to Texas border towns last month, castigating each other for a recent surge in illegal immigration.

Trump said the influx of migrants was “a Joe Biden invasion.” Biden blamed Trump for the death of a $20 billion bipartisan bill to increase detention capacity and hire thousands of Border Patrol officers.

Trump’s comments Saturday represent an escalation of his long-harsh language on the topic. Since beginning his 2016 campaign by calling Mexican immigrants “rapists,” Trump has made inflammatory attacks on migrants a theme of all of his campaigns. He accused immigrants in October of “poisoning the blood of our country” — a remark some likened to the “contamination of the blood” concept that Adolf Hitler laid out in “Mein Kampf.” Trump has rejected that comparison and has continued to use similar language.

He has also pledged to launch an unprecedented deportation effort if elected, pointing as inspiration to a 1954 program called “Operation Wetback” that used military-style tactics to remove Mexican immigrants from the country.

“Among my very first actions upon taking office will be to stop the invasion of our country,” Trump said Saturday.
