Who Is Dua Lipa?

Early life and family.

Dua Lipa was born in London, England, on August 22, 1995. In 1992 , Lipa's parents, Dukagjin and Anessa, fled Pristina, Kosovo, to escape conflict in the former Yugoslavia. As Kosovar Albanians, they were targeted by Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic.

Lipa's parents arrived in London as refugees. Though both were students (Lipa's father studied dentistry and her mother studied law), they worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new home. In 1995, Lipa was born.

Lipa wrote her first song around the age of four . She had family connections to music — in addition to his dental studies, her father had been in a rock band. "My father was a musician and music was always played around the house so it just always kind of had a big impact on me," she shared in one interview. She grew up listening to artists like Blondie, Prince , Bob Dylan , Sting and Pink .

In 2006 , Lipa's parents felt it was safe enough to return to their home country. They brought an 11-year-old Lipa and her younger siblings, sister Rina and brother Gjin, back to Kosovo.

Though Lipa had grown up speaking Albanian at home, the move revealed that her language skills weren't good enough to thrive in school. With time, her Albanian did improve . She was able to make friends, who told her about the war that had taken place in Kosovo while her family was in London. Kosovo's hip-hop-dominated music scene also introduced Lipa to new music.

At 15, Lipa returned to London, where she moved in with a family friend. She got her parents to support the move because it would benefit her education . However, her true goal was to pursue singing; she felt launching a career in music wouldn't be possible in Kosovo. Sheexplained to CBS News in 2020, "I was like, I want to do music, but I want to do it on a global scale. I have to go back to where everything is happening."

Early Career and 'Dua Lipa'

In London, Lipa studied at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, where she'd been a student before her family relocated to Kosovo. She also posted song covers on YouTube in an attempt to garner attention. "Deep down I wanted to have that Justin Bieber effect where someone would find me on YouTube!" she said in a 2020 interview.

Lipa earned money by working in a restaurant. She also signed with a modeling agency, believing it could boost her career. Yet because she wasn't interested in losing weight as the agency wanted, few jobs materialized.

Still focused on music, Lipa shared songs on SoundCloud. Though she didn't appear on the performance-focused reality show X-Factor , she did sing in a commercial for the show. In time, Lipa was offered a music publishing deal, which set off a fortuitous chain of events . Lipa contacted a lawyer for advice on the deal. The lawyer put her in touch with a manager, who also managed Lana Del Rey . Lipa ended up signing on with this manager.

In 2015, Lipa got a record deal. Her first single, "New Love," came out that year. More songs followed, but her self-titled album didn't arrive until 2017. That album's singles had middling success until "New Rules" was released. The video for that blockbuster hit has been viewed more than two billion times on YouTube. Another single from the album, "IDGAF," went platinum .

Growing fame resulted in some backlash for Lipa, such as being criticized for lackluster choreography in 2018. However, she took the comments in stride and used them as fuel for dance training sessions.

Growing Success and 'Future Nostalgia'

At the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019, Lipa won Best New Artist. She also won a second Grammy that year: Best Dance Recording for "Electricity."

Lipa's second album, Future Nostalgia , was more personal than her debut release. She'd come up with the title while in Las Vegas, and had a writing credit on all the record's songs. At the beginning of March 2020, Lipa was gearing up to release Future Nostalgia . Then the album leaked online just as the world was shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many other artists put their work on pause, but Lipa decided to release Future Nostalgia a week early.

Given the global crisis, Lipa was unsure about proceeding with the album release, though the leak had left her in a difficult position. Fortunately, her work was embraced by listeners. While Lipa had described her earlier songs as "dark pop," this album was more dance-friendly. The tracks displayed a connection to music from the 1970s, '80s and 90s, while also bearing up-to-date touches.

Lipa became the top female artist on Spotify's listening charts the week her album came out. As tours were off the table in 2020, in November Lipa live-streamed a concert called Studio 2054 , which included guest appearances by Kylie Minogue, Bad Bunn y and John. More than 5 million people saw the stream, setting a record for paid views.

Lipa received six nominations for the 63rd Grammy Awards. Future Nostalgia won for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Activism and Causes

Lipa has shared her support for Palestinians , abortion rights, women's rights , Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ rights . She has urged people in the United Kingdom to vote Labour and backed Bernie Sanders during the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign.

With her father, Lipa created the Sunny Hill Foundation, an organization that assists younger people in Kosovo. Her family's experiences make her concerned about the future status of immigrants and refugees in a post-Brexit United Kingdom.

Personal Life and Boyfriend

Lipa has been dating Anwar Hadid, a model and the younger brother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, since 2019.

Prior to her relationship with Hadid, Lipa was involved with Isaac Carew.

Dua Lipa: 'I've been the new girl all my life'

  • Published 4 June 2023

Dua Lipa

Award-winning singer Dua Lipa thrilled fans at the Hay Festival on Sunday as she spoke candidly about how "persistence" had brought her success.

"From a young age, I had the dream to be a pop star but it never seemed like something that was actually possible," she told the audience.

Having moved between her parents' native Kosovo and London as a child, she said her adaptability had helped.

"I've been a new girl all my life," she told the renowned literary festival.

Her audience were a mixed bunch, but there was a sizeable number of patient parents queuing up at the humid Baillie Gifford stage with teenage daughters who were scrolling through Dua's Instagram feed as they waited to be seated.

The One Kiss singer's fondness for reading is no secret. She made a speech at the Booker Prize ceremony last year about the power of literature.

Here she expanded on the books that became markers at pivotal moments in her life, including Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses ("a first step into understanding racism and classism" when she was 10) and Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Born in London after her parents moved there to escape the war in former Yugoslavia, she moved back to Kosovo with her parents at the age of 11. When she was 15, she headed back to the UK to take her GCSEs and pursue a music career.

Dua Lipa

"There was always the idea of being from two places at once," she explained. "I understood the duality of my heritage from an early age. People would always ask where my name is from.

"I was really proud of it, but when I was younger I wished my name was, say, Hannah - something 'normal' and English."

As well as "making up dance routines in the playground at school", the singer said "reading was also such a big part of my life".

When she moved to Kosovo, she discovered The Castle/The Siege by Albanian author Ismail Kadare, set amid a conflict in the 15th Century.

"The memory I have of reading it is that it was really difficult, it's a big book, but it was a gateway into my Albanian roots. It was like another milestone moment in my life that really shifted things for me."

When she moved back to London at 15, she came on her own and shared a flat with the daughter of family friends from Kosovo. That would be quite daunting for most young teenagers.

'Difficult relationship'

"I was quite determined," Dua said. "I didn't feel I had the same opportunities in music as I had in London. I was driven. My dad says I'm very hard to say no to!"

After finishing her studies, she set about making it in the music industry.

"I was really persistent. I just started writing a lot, worked with a producer. I was 17. I was offered a publishing deal but [producer] Felix told me to go to a lawyer, who said, 'Don't sign that deal!' They then helped me get into the studio."

Along the way, she found herself in a "difficult, early relationship in my life", she said, explaining: "I guess I was in a relationship with someone who had a very different idea of fidelity than I had."

Kundera's 1984 classic The Unbearable Lightness of Being helped her through it.

'In the deep end'

"[Main character] Tomas has a very unapologetic philosophy on relationships and monogamy. My philosophy never changed... but books help you understand other people's emotions, the human experience," she explained.

Dua's love of books has led her to interview renowned authors including Hanya Yanagihara, who wrote A Little Life, on her podcast Dua Lipa: At Your Service. She also recorded a special episode in conversation with Shuggie Bain author and Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart at Hay on Saturday - the first book of the month pick for her new Service95 book club.

"I'm still figuring it out sometimes. If there's something that you like, why not try it? You'll never know unless you just dive in," she said.

"That's what happened to me with the podcast. I was absolutely petrified but really excited. Would I be a good interviewer, would I be able to keep the conversation going?

"But maybe I thrive on being thrown in the deep end. Being out of my comfort zone pushes me to just go for it."

The pop sensation has become synonymous with bold looks from Versace and Mugler on social media, on stage and beyond.

Dua Lipa is a musician known for her elaborate on-stage ensembles, and collaborations with Versace, Mugler and Puma.

The London-born songstress has risen to pop stardom thanks to tunes like “Levitating,” “Don’t Start Now” and “Cold Heart,” a collaboration with Elton John. In tandem, she’s earned attention in fashion, too, launching collaborations with the likes of Versace and Mulger, and serving as a brand ambassador for Puma. She’s also gained attention for her elaborate on-stage ensembles.

Born in London in 1995, Lipa was raised between the UK and Kosovo, her parents’ home country. In 2013, while working as a cocktail bar waitress, she signed with Tap Music Management, eventually signing with Warner Bros. Records a year later. In 2015, she released her first single, “New Love,” and two years later, in 2017, she dropped her self-titled debut album. Her rise in music has been a steady climb since. Songs like “Don’t Start Now” and “One Kiss,” a collaboration with Calvin Harris, have gotten a boost on TikTok.

As her music career has catapulted Lipa to global stardom, her profile in fashion has risen. She’s practically become synonymous with Versace, serving as an ambassador for the brand, starring in several campaigns and frequently wearing its styles on the red carpet, including archival looks. (She wore a 1992 Versace dress to the Grammys in 2022, a look previously seen on Cindy Crawford at the 1992 MTV VMAs.) She walked in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2022 show in Milan — and her music provided the show’s soundtrack. In 2021, she dropped the first of her “Flutur” collaboration with Puma, a collection of brightly-hued shoes, apparel and accessories, following it up with a second iteration in July 2022.

Lipa has also developed a reputation for her on-stage style, highlights of which include a Mugler catsuit covered in 120,000 crystals. She’s made waves in beauty as well: In 2017, she collaborated with Mac Cosmetics on a lip gloss, and Saint Laurent signed her as the face of the fragrance Libre.

biography dua lipa

Short biography

Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in London to a family of Albanian migrants. Her parents, who came from Kosovo, were forced to say goodbye to their homeland in the early nineties, due to the difficult political situation. The name of the singer, translated from the native language of her parents, has a very beautiful meaning. It translates as: “I love.”

From the very childhood, the future British pop star had a great love for music and very early began to show her musical talent. One of the reasons for this was the fact that her father was involved in rock music for a long time. Little Dua spent a lot of time at rehearsals and performances with her father and his colleagues.

When Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia, the family returned to their homeland. Dua Lipa was thirteen years old at the time. Her voice even then won the hearts of everyone who heard her. But the first popularity came to the young performer at the age of fourteen, when she began to upload cover versions of the songs of Nelly Furtado and Christina Aguilera, very popular at that time, on youtube.

Dua Lipa found it difficult to develop a career in show business in Kosovo and returned to London at the age of 15. This was her first experience of living away from her parents, and it did not immediately succeed her. But a great love for music and a desire to become a popular singer encouraged me in difficult times. Friends were very supportive.

Continuing to develop her musical career, she simultaneously began to build a career as a model. Nice appearance and model data allowed her to quickly conquer the catwalks in London. But even the success in her modeling career did not make the rising star move away from the dream of a big stage and music.

When the young singer was twenty years old, the world-famous company Warner Brothers signed a contract with her, with the support of which Dua Lipa released her first single. 3 months after the debut single, it was immediately followed by the second. Even these first two recordings bring Lipa incredible success. In January 2016, the first concert tour across Europe took place, which gathered an incredibly large number of fans for the young singer. The concert in London, becoming the final highlight of her tour, barely accommodated everyone who wanted to listen to Dua Lipa’s songs performed live.

In the first half of 2016, the young star released her third, fourth, and fifth singles. It was her fifth single entitled Blow Your Mind that broke into the world charts, taking a worthy position in America’s Top 100 Songs and showing very good results in other countries.

The incredible success of the young performer attracted the attention of filmmakers, and in 2016 a film was shot about Dua Lipa’s childhood, family, and career path.

In mid-2017, the first album of the already very popular Dua Lipa, called New Rules, was released. He not only climbed to the top of the UK charts but also broke all records in recent years. In terms of its success, it can compare to the success of the song Hello, which Adele released in 2015.

Interesting Facts

  • In the professional musical circles of Britain, Dua Lipa has been assigned the name of the new Queen of Great Britain, of course, the musical queen.
  • The singer describes her music as dark pop.
  • Almost all of Dua Lipa’s songs are written by herself. The singer often says that writing songs brings her no less pleasure than performing in front of thousands of fans.
  • The singer doesn’t like being called the new Lana Del Rey. This is not because Dua Lipa may not be thrilled with Lana Del Rey. The reason for this is the natural desire of the young performer to be herself and not the prototype of other famous stars.
  • Dua Lipa, despite her young age, has already started doing charity work. At the same time, she is involved in projects to support people in Kosovo.
  • When asked if she feels like a foreigner in London, the girl always replies that she has two homelands – London and Pristina.
  • The most difficult creative period of Dua Lipa’s career came at the time when she returned to London and began to desperately try to develop her musical career. The singer often mentions that for a long time she had a feeling that she was doing something wrong and was very worried about this. The experiences of those times are already behind, but since they occupied a very significant place in her life, she decided to reflect her feelings of that period in new songs.
  • Despite the wild success on stage and continuous concerts, Dua Lipa, albeit a little, continues her modeling career. In 2017, she became the face of the Italian brand Patrizia Pepe.
  • The singer constantly declares that in her stage image she does not pursue fashion. In her opinion, attempts to keep up with fashion indicate a lack of individuality. The young performer says that she always goes on stage in the way she chooses herself. Or rather, in the image that her inner state inspires.
  • In 2017, Dua Lipa performed in Moscow at the Luzhniki Stadium. After the concert, she said that she incredibly liked both the atmosphere in Moscow and the Moscow audience.

Collaborations of Dua Lipa with other performers

Like most other stars of show business, Dua Lipa has already managed to acquire joint works with other performers in the first two years.

So, at the end of 2016, the singer took part in Sean Paul’s work on a song called “No Lie “ , which later took a fairly high place in the British charts.

In early 2017, Martin Marks released his single “Scared to be lonely ” with the participation of Dua Lipa. This deep lyrical composition is liked by her fans.

Awards and nominations

Even though Dua Lipa relatively recently achieved universal recognition and global popularity, it already has a lot of prestigious nominations and awards. The first nomination for the young singer was the nomination for the Sound of 2016 list, which includes the most popular songs of the year.

A unique symbiosis of strong character, good looks, and amazing vocals has made Dua Lipa a favorite of British music lovers and helped her to win new fans around the world. Despite her young age and still short career path, the singer managed to secure her place as the brightest star on the British charts. Music critics in England and other countries unanimously declare that Dua Lipa’s current success is far from the limit of her capabilities, and they predict a bright future for her among the stars of modern music.

Dua Lipa Biography, Career, Songs, Albums, Activism, Relationship

Dua Lipa, a singer-songwriter, is the daughter of Kosovar Albanian immigrants who arrived in London in the 1990s. Her name “Dua” means “love” in Albanian, and she has no middle name. Lipa was so determined to pursue a musical career that she moved to London alone at the age of 15. (Her family had returned to Kosovo a few years ago.) She promoted herself on social media before signing with a label. Lipa’s previous work was “dark pop,” but her popular second album, Future Nostalgia, had more upbeat songs. Lipa has collaborated with many musicians, including Elton John , Miley Cyrus , and Chris Martin.

Early Life and Family

Dua Lipa was born in London, England, on August 22, 1995. Lipa’s parents, Dukagjin and Anessa, fled Pristina, Kosovo, in 1992 to escape the former Yugoslavia’s violence. Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic targeted the Kosovar Albanians.

Lipa’s parents came to London as refugees. Despite being students (Lipa’s father studied dentistry and her mother studied law), they worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new home. Lipa’s birth year was 1995.

Lipa wrote her first song when she was just four years old. Her father, in addition to his dental education, had played in a rock band. “My father was a musician and music was always played around the house so it just always kind of had a big impact on me,” she said in a recent interview. Growing up, she listened to artists such as Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting, and Pink.

Lipa’s parents decided to return to their home country in 2006 because they felt safe. They returned 11-year-old Lipa and her younger siblings, Rina and Gjin, to Kosovo.

Despite growing up speaking Albanian at home, Lipa’s linguistic abilities were inadequate for academic success. With time, her Albanian did improve. During her family’s stay in London, she met new acquaintances who informed her about the conflict in Kosovo. Lipa discovered new music through Kosovo’s hip-hop culture.

Lipa returned to London at the age of fifteen and moved in with a family acquaintance. She convinced her parents to embrace the relocation as it would enhance her studies. Her main objective, however, was to pursue singing; she believed that starting a music career in Kosovo would be impossible. In a 2020 interview with CBS News, she expressed her desire to pursue music on a global scale. I need to return there where everything is happening.”

Early Career and ‘Dua Lipa’

Lipa attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London before moving to Kosovo with her family. In addition, she attempted to gain popularity by posting song covers on YouTube. In a 2020 interview, she stated, “Deep down, I wanted to have that Justin Bieber effect, where someone would find me on YouTube!”

Lipa made money by working at a restaurant. She signed with a modeling agency, hoping to advance her profession. However, because she was not interested in dropping weight as the agency desired, few work opportunities arose.

Lipa remained focused on music, sharing tracks on SoundCloud. Though she didn’t compete on the performance-focused reality show X-Factor, she did sing in a commercial for the show. Lipa was offered a song publishing deal, which triggered a fortunate chain of events. Lipa asked a lawyer for guidance on the deal. The lawyer connected her with a management who also managed Lana Del Rey. Lipa eventually signed up with this manager.

Lipa signed a record deal in 2015. Her first single, “New Love,” was released that year. More songs followed, but her self-titled album wasn’t released until 2017. That album’s singles had mixed popularity until “New Rules” was released. The video for the mega hit has over two billion views on YouTube. The album’s other song, “IDGAF,” achieved platinum status.

Lipa’s rising reputation drew criticism, including calls for poor choreography in 2018. Despite the criticism, she utilized it as motivation to improve her dancing skills.

Growing Success and ‘Future Nostalgia’

Lipa won Best New Artist at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019. She also won a second Grammy that year, for Best Dance Recording for “Electricity.”

Lipa’s second album, Future Nostalgia, was more intimate than her first one. She came up with the title while in Las Vegas and wrote all of the record’s songs. Lipa prepared to release Future Nostalgia in early March 2020. The album then leaked online right as the globe was shutting down due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Lipa released “Future Nostalgia” a week ahead of schedule, while several other musicians paused their work.

Lipa was hesitant to release the album due to the worldwide crisis, and the leak had put her in a tough situation. Fortunately, audiences responded well to her work. Lipa called her prior songs as “dark pop,” but this album was more danceable. The tracks evoked music from the 1970s, ’80s, and 90s, while also including contemporary elements.

Lipa was the top female artist on Spotify’s listening charts the week her album was released. In November, Lipa live-streamed Studio 2054, a concert with guest appearances from Kylie Minogue, Bad Bunny, and John. Tours were not planned for 2020. Over 5 million people watched the stream, breaking a record for sponsored views.

Lipa has six nominations for the 63rd Grammy Awards.Future Nostalgia won Best Pop Vocal Album.

Lipa has expressed support for Palestine, abortion rights, women’s rights, Black Lives Matter, and LGBTQ rights. She advised UK voters to vote Labour and supported Bernie Sanders in the 2020 US presidential campaign.

Lipa and her father founded the Sunny Hill Foundation, which helps young people in Kosovo. Her family’s experiences raise concerns about the future of immigrants and refugees in the United Kingdom after Brexit.

Relationship

Lipa has been dating Anwar Hadid, the model and younger brother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, since 2019.

Dua Lipa Grammys Performance

Dua Lipa opened the 2024 Grammys with a new song titled “Training Season” before performing her recent, psychedelic-influenced single “Houdini.” In between the two songs, she delivered a quick line from her “Barbie” song “Dance the Night,” which was nominated for two Grammys.

Clad in all black except for her red hair, the singer danced around a giant cage on the stage and dropped to the floor during the guitar riff in “Houdini.”

The singer previously teased a clip of “Training Season” on social media. The single is set for release on Feb. 15, leading up to Lipa’s third studio album, which has yet to receive a release date.

A triple Grammy winner, Dua’s nominations this year are in the song of the year and best song written for visual media for her “Barbie” soundtrack song “Dance the Night.” The disco pop track was also nominated for best original song for a motion picture at this year’s Golden Globes though the prize ultimately went to Billie Eilish and Finneas for their song in the same film.

In fact, “‘Barbie’ completely took over our lives — we were completely Barb-ified,” Dua told Variety in their “Behind the Song” episode. “We were putting post-it notes everywhere, trying to brainstorm what ‘Dance the Night’ was going to be.”

“We rewrote ‘Dance the Night’ so many times to match the picture,” Ronson added. “Like, Dua was literally coming up with lyrics — When Margo does that come-hither thing with her fingers [in the scene], that’s when I want to sing ‘Come along for the ride,’ We actually engineered that song almost like a score.”

“Honestly, it hit me so quick — the intensity of everyone’s reaction,” Dua said of “Houdini” at while speaking on the red carpet at Variety ’s Power of Women event . “It’s amazing. It’s definitely the biggest reaction I’ve ever gotten from anything I’ve ever done. I’m just really happy and ready to start this next chapter.”

Dua Lipa Opens the 2024 Grammys With Debut of New Single ‘Training Season' & ‘Houdini'

Dua Lipa danced the night away to kick off the 2024 Grammy Awards at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday (Feb. 4).

The acrobatic first-half of the performance was ultra fitting for "Training Season," Lipa's new single that's due Feb. 15. She dangled from a jungle gym that her muscular backup dancers occasionally tipped over. She later ran onto the main stage for a magical light show for "Houdini," which is the lead single from her upcoming third studio album. And with her flaming red hair and black leather ensemble, Lipa looked like a rock star sliding onto the floor for the finale.

Prior to his monologue, the evening's stunned host Trevor Noah commended her by calling her one of the "best performers of our generation."

The three-time Grammy winner is nominated for two awards, best song written for visual media and song of the year with "Dance the Night" from Barbie The Album. Billie Eilish ‘s "What Was I Made For?" - from the same album - took home the trophy for the former award.

Lipa's last album was 2020's Future Nostalgia , which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 . The nostalgic pop and disco set was nominated for album of the year and won best pop vocal album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Its lead single "Don't Start Now" was nominated for record and song of the year as well as best pop solo performance.

Argylle , the spy action comedy film Lipa stars in as LaGrange, is currently in theaters.

Watch Dua Lipa’s New “Training Season” Video

Dua Lipa

After debuting it at the 2024 Grammy Awards , Dua Lipa has officially released her new song “ Training Season .” She co-wrote the single with Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr., and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker—her collaborators on recent track “ Houdini .” Harle and Parker also co-produced the new song. Watch the “Training Season” video, directed by Vincent Haycock , below.

In a press release on “Training Season,” Dua Lipa stated:

I had been on a string of bad dates, and the last one was the final straw. The next morning I arrived to the studio to Caroline and Tobias asking me how it all went and I immediately declared “TRAINING SEASON IS OVER,” and like the best “day after” debriefs with your mates, we had a lot of laughs and it all quickly came together from there. And while it is obviously about that feeling when you are just absolutely done telling people… men specifically in this case, how to date you right; it is also about my training season being over and me growing with every experience. I have never felt more confident, clear or empowered. And while it may be that training season is never over for any of us, you start to see the beauty in finding that person to experience it with. You stop looking for the trainees and become more interested in having someone where you are and someone to grow with.

Dua Lipa has yet to announce her next album. In the meantime, read the review of 2020’s Future Nostalgia .
