Personal and Teaching Statements

This page offers some guidelines for writing personal statements and teaching statements.

Guidelines for Writing a Personal Statement

A personal statement is, in fact, a research statement. You need to follow a certain structure or at least provide certain information. Try to keep it short - only one or two pages - since you are sending it to a very busy person! Try to avoid describing what you did as a child. Most academics are not interested, so including this information would most likely only hurt your application.

Click here to see a sample statement.

1st Paragraph

Describe the area of research that interests you and why. If you have already done some research work in this area, be sure to mention it. Also, explain why you think you are suitable for this area. You may also describe competitions in the area that you have done well in and special academic attainments. For example, a double major in mathematics and computer science probably set you apart from students who only studied computer science. If you have nothing special to say, then just mention briefly how you came to choose this area.

2nd Paragraph

Describe research programs you have worked on (one paragraph per program.)

  • What did you find?
  • What did you learn?
  • What approaches did you try?
  • Did these approaches work or not?

3rd Paragraph

Explain why you feel you need a Masters degree or PhD.

4th Paragraph

Tell the reader why you want to go to that particular university. Make it easy for them:

  • If you want to work with a particular person or persons tell them who you want to work with and why.
  • If you want to work in a particular area, tell them why you want to work in that area in their university.
  • If there is no particular person you want to work with or particular area you want to work in, explain why you would like to join their program.

5th Paragraph

You can also state what papers you have read from that university and what you enjoyed about them or how they inspired you. Lastly, tell them what you hope to gain from their university.

Different from a personal statement, a teaching statement focuses on your philosophy of education and teaching experience. You can highlight any innovative lessons you have designed and taught and include any positive feedback you have received either from your supervisors or the students themselves. Try to make your enthusiasm and motivation for teaching obvious. Try to keep the statement to two pages or less, especially if you are also sending a personal statement and CV.

Since this type of statement is more difficult to put into a specific structure than a personal statement, try include all the elements mentioned above and then e-mail it to your communication tutor for copy editing.

After you write a draft of your statement, please send it to your communication tutor for copy editing.

Guide to Applying to The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for an Undergraduate Degree

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a public research university in Hong Kong . HKUST is commonly regarded as one of the fastest-growing universities in the world. As of 2019, the university was ranked seventh in Asia by QS and third by Times, and around top 40 internationally. It also ranked first in Times Higher Education Young University Rankings in 2019 and second by QS world’s under-50 universities in 2020.

HKUST is a popular choice amongst students for its diversity and its international reputation across the world. First, let’s talk about its deadlines.

The application for HKUST opens in mid-September. Applicants can submit their applications either in the early round deadline which is on 15th November or in the main round deadline which is on 6th January of the following year. Next, let us go through the application process of HKUST.

Application Portal for HKUST

To submit your application to HKUST, you will need to create an account on HKUST ‘s admissions website. To have a complete application, you will be required to fill in all the sections, which are:

First is the Personal Particulars Section, where an applicant is required to fill in basic details such as their name, age, gender, email id, phone number, date of birth, identification document number, information about visa and other such details.

Next, is the Program Choice section, which requires the applicant to submit their program choice. Note that you can select up to two choices and the first choice will be considered as your first priority. If the first choice is unsuccessful you will be automatically considered for the second choice

Next, is the Secondary Education Section, where the applicant needs to add details such as school name, expected date of graduation and final results of your 9th,10th and 11th final examinations

Next, are the sections with the Examinations Results and English Language Proficiency Test , which requires you to upload results of your high school and English proficiency exams you will take or have taken. For IB Diploma and Indian applicants, include your predicted grades for each subject. In the English Language Proficiency section, submit your IELTS or TOEFL scores in the spaces provided.

The sixth section is Prizes and Awards , which requires applicants to write any prizes, awards or accolades they have received. Make sure you have the certificates handy in case the universities ask for them.

The seventh section is Activities , which requires applicants to write extra-curricular activities they have been part of. These can be fests, activities and hobbies you are involved in during the last few years.

The eighth section is the Work Experience Section, which asks the applicant to submit information about all their previous jobs and internships if any.

The next section is the Personal Statement Section which requires the applicant to write a personal statement with a maximum of 4,000 characters. The applicant should clearly explain the reasons behind their application.

And, in the final section, known as the Academic Reference section, applicants need to provide the details of an academic referee who will upload your predicted grades and the letter of recommendation. This can be your IB Coordinator, Career Counselor or High School Teacher. A separate email will be sent out to them regarding the predicted grades and Letter of Recommendation.

Make sure that you upload the final copies of each of the documents required. For transcripts you have not received, you may enter the expected date you will receive them and upload it to your application later.

Each file should be within 2mb and before uploading, make sure the filename describes the content of your file.

After you are done with uploading the documents, make sure to review the entire application before you go ahead with the payment process. Once you review the application and submit it, the page will prompt you to the payment option. The application fee of HK$ 450 ~ USD 60 has to be paid either by a Visa or Mastercard to successfully submit your application.

Within a month of submitting the application, shortlisted applicants will receive interview requests via email. HKUST uses The Kira Interview Platform to interview their candidates. In this method, there is no human interaction. This platform prompts the candidate to answer questions given out by the system. There will be 5 questions and a minute to prepare between each of the questions. For example, in the interview round, the first few questions are about yourself, then you would be asked questions on current affairs or initiatives you can take around your community.

Announcement of Offers

Offers for the Early Round applicants will be announced in late December. Applicants who do not receive offers during the early round will be considered once again with the main round applicants. Offers for the Main Round applicants will be announced on a rolling basis from February.

Scholarships

Once you have successfully submitted an application for admission, you will automatically be considered for an entrance scholarship. The result of both admission and entrance scholarship will be announced at the same time. No separate application for entrance scholarship is required. Selection is based on academic merits with consideration of non-academic achievements.

In case you do not receive an offer from HKUST, you may apply separately to various other scholarships supported by organizations, companies and business leaders. For example, local and international students can apply separately to the HKUST Diversity Scholarship Programme or The Sports Scholarship programme upon admission.

Tuition and Other Fees

The cost of studying at HKUST includes:

1: The Tuition Fees for International undergraduate students, which is HKD 140,000 which is around Rupees 13 lakh per year.

2: Accommodation or Hall Fees varies between HKD 15,000 – HKD 30,000 which is around rupees 1.5 to 3 lakhs per year which may vary depending on the hall, and whether you have a single, double or triple room.

3: Food in the university and travel within Hong Kong is subsidized. An average of HKD 3000 – HKD 4000 which is 27000-35000 rupees will be required per month.

4: If you decide to join clubs and societies, there may be a subscription cost which is anywhere between HKD 300 – HKD 400 which is equivalent to 2800 to 3500 rupees per year.

Therefore, the total cost of pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree in HKUST would come up to around 75 to 80 lakhs. For more information, please visit our website unirely.com to learn more about the process of applying to universities in HK for an undergraduate degree.

In general, we try to learn more about the applicant as a person e.g. on personality, aspirations, and motivation/suitability for the program applied. A good essay should tell a story and have a clear focus, reveal passion and expose personality, show creativity and independent thinking so that after reading, the reader would form a unique impression about the applicant.

For other Business programs

Final Band A applicants may receive extra bonus points from their OEA/500-word personal statement (named "additional information" on the JUPAS form).

Selected candidates from the following will be invited for engagement activities in May-June:

  • Applicants from the JUPAS Band A pool
  • Participants of HKUST activities like Business YoungStars, Business Summer Camp and Summer Institute (Business courses)

Please click here for example of admissions score calculation (before bonus).

3. What were the median / lower quartile sample scores in 2023 intake?

The scores presented below are calculated based on the 8.5-point scale (5** =8.5, 5*=7, 5=5.5, 4=4, 3=3, 2=2, 1=0).

Median and lower-quartile scores, with weightings applied where appropriate, of the JUPAS 2023 intake are as follows:

4. If I take more electives, will I get extra bonus points for all of them?

Yes. The next best core or elective subject (6th subject) will be awarded bonus points.

(Bonus point = course grade x a bonus factor %)

5. Will the two extended modules in Mathematics (M1/ M2) be counted as an elective?

6. will additional language subjects or applied learning subjects be considered as an elective.

Not for the core admissions score. However, the additional language subject can be considered for the 6th subject bonus calcuation.

7. Are there any subject requirements for business programs?

No. Students from all subject areas are welcome to apply. For JS5313 BBA Global Business, Level 5 or above in English Language is normally expected.

8. Can I use other English tests (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL) to fulfil the English requirement?

9. can i use alternative chinese/ other language subjects to fulfill the chinese requirement.

Non-Chinese speaking students meeting specified circumstances set out by EDB may use alternative Chinese (i.e. Grade E or above in a GCSE/IGCSE/GCE Chinese Language subject), an HKDSE Other Language Subject (Grade E or above) or an Applied Learning Chinese subject (Attained or above) to satisfy the University's Chinese Language requirement.

The specified circumstances are:

  • a) Students who have learned Chinese Language for less than 6 years while receiving primary and secondary education; or
  • b) Students who have learned Chinese Language for 6 years or more in schools, but have been taught an adapted and simpler curriculum not normally applicable to the majority of students in local schools.

10. How will my "Other Experiences and Achievements" (OEA) be used in considering admission?

Students are encouraged to prepare a precise and accurate record of their OEA and a 500-word personal statement (named "additional information" on the JUPAS form) for admission consideration.

Please note that we emphasize quality of your activities rather than the quantity. In your personal statement, we wish to learn more about your personality, aspirations and motivation/suitability for the programs.

Bonus points will be awarded to final Band A applicants with impressive records and statements.

11. Will I have any advantages if I have participated in HKUST Business School activities/ events?

If applicants have comparable HKDSE scores, tie-breaking bonus will be given to those who have participated in any of the following:

  • Business Preview
  • Business YoungStars
  • Business Summer Camp
  • Summer Institute (Business courses)

12. Do I need to attend an admission interview?

For Global Business (JS5313), Economics and Finance (JS5331), Quantitative Finance (JS5332), Risk Management and Business Intelligence (JS5814) and  Sustainable and Green Finance (JS5822)

Interview is required for admission to the five programs listed above (JS5313, JS5331, JS5332, JS5814, and JS5822). The interview performance will be incorporated to the final admissions score. Selected applicants from the JUPAS Band A pool will be invited to attend respective program interview.

Interview is not required.

13. Do students receive conditional offer?

Applicants/Nominees of the following schemes  may  receive conditional offer.

  • HKSAR Government's Home Affairs Bureau Multi-faceted Excellence Scholarship (HAB)
  • HKUST's Student Athletes Admissions Scheme (SAAS)
  • School Principal Nomination (SPN) [Alternatively, extra bonus points may be awarded. Conditional offer holders will still get extra bonus points if, unfortunately, they fail to meet the admission condition.]

14. Do I still have a chance to be admitted to HKUST Business School if I put your programs in Band B choices at the end?

Our admission standard in the past has been consistently high. If you can fulfill our admission requirements, it is likely that you can also fulfill the admission requirements of your first choice program and be admitted to that program through the JUPAS system. Also, from 2012 to 2023, 100% of our admitted students via JUPAS main round came from the Band A pool . If you are really interested in our program above all, you should put it as your first choice.

15. Do institutions know the order of my JUPAS program choices?

No. We do not know the exact order of your choice. We only know the Banding of your choices.

16. Should I put JS5300 Business & Management (school-based admission) or specific major programs in my JUPAS choices?

The Year 1 curricula of all business programs are identical. If you are interested in business study in general and would like to take time to explore your program interest and aspiration, you should choose JS5300 Business & Management to enter the School first and select your desired major(s) by the end of the 3rd semester. At least half of the program seats for each major are reserved for students admitted into JS5300 Business & Management to enter the programs via the major selection exercises.

If, however, you have particular interest and understanding in a specific business major program (e.g. Accounting), you should put JS5318 BBA Professional Accounting as your top choice, followed by JS5300 Business & Management to maximize your chance to be admitted to HKUST Business School (given the smaller intake size of program-based admission versus that of school-based admission). Drawing reference on the 2023 intake results, it is expected that the minimum scores for entering business major programs would be higher than that of entering the School via JS5300 Business & Management.

Applicants who intend to put only one business choice in Band A, the School-based admission route of JS5300 Business & Management is recommended.

17. I am re-taking HKDSE, will I be considered? Will there be any penalty?

We accept combined certificates as long as the minimum admission requirements are met. There will be no score penalty.

18. Will there be any credit transfer available for HKDSE applicants?

Yes. currently, JUPAS students with the following English attainment will be granted 3 transfer credits for English Common Core Courses:

  • Level 5 or above (with no subscore lower than 4) in HKDSE English Language

For details, please refer to https://crtran.ust.hk/ .

19. Are there any scholarships for JUPAS applicants?

On top of the JUPAS Scholarships under the University’s scheme, HKUST Business School offers top-up scholarships for eligible applicants. Those with excellent interview performance may be awarded further scholarship. For details, please refer to  here .

20. Where can I find information about student halls and how to apply?

Currently, HKUST has 10 Undergraduate Student Halls (9 on-campus halls and 1 off-campus), 5 of which have student halls with students’ associations, offering accommodations to both local and non-local students. Local students are offered university-provided accommodation for one semester in their first year of study.

Following accepting an admission offer, you should refer to the Admissions Portal for updates on the application period and procedure for student housing. You may visit here for further information.

21. Can JUPAS students apply for the World Bachelor of Business (WBB) program?

WBB is a self-financed program jointly offered with University of Southern California (USA) and Bocconi University (Italy). Students may submit a separate WBB application via USC’s Common Application in addition to their JUPAS application. Please refer to the program website  http://wbb.ust.hk  for more information.

However, please note there is a CGA requirement for renewable scholarships on admissions (if you are awarded one).

No. We do not have any preferred subjects in HKDSE as we value the diversity of our students’ backgrounds. GBUS calculates the HKDSE admissions score based on the results of 6 subjects attained. M1/M2 is treated in the same way as an elective. Extra core or elective subjects might generally be used for giving bonus points or as a tiebreaker only.

You are encouraged to check out our last year admissions score reference in the Figures and Statistics section of this page.

Selected Band A applicants who demonstrate talents and potential for the GBUS program will be invited for an interview. Shortlisted JUPAS candidates will have engagement events and a compulsory Main Round interview. The engagement events will be organized by the HKUST Business School from May to June, and one by the GBUS program in early July, before the release of HKDSE results. Main Round interviews by the GBUS program will be conducted in late July after releasing of HKDSE results.

The format of interview differs every year. The purpose of interview is to assess your critical thinking, communication skill, presentation skill, teamwork, etc. Interview questions cover a wide range of areas, and their purpose is to make sure it is a good fit between the candidate and our program.

A minimum level of academic excellence is a must to get admitted to the program. Beyond so, the program also looks for promising students with good attitude, presentable demeanor, and a good fit for a career in business. The weight of the interview score shall not be over 40% of the total admissions composite score.

Yes. If you are invited to the first-round interview, you will receive a formal feedback letter from us on your interview performance. In general, we do not provide formal feedback to the final-round interview.

Yes. Remember we emphasize the quality of your activities rather than the quantity. Bonus points will be awarded to final Band A applicants with impressive records and personal statements.

No. We accept repeated attempts and combined certificates. There will be no score penalty given the minimum admissions requirements are met.

In general, we do not issue conditional offers for JUPAS applicants except if you are enrolled in particular JUPAS admission schemes.

We strongly advise students to put GBUS as their top JUPAS choice. To maximize your chance of admissions to HKUST Business School, you are encouraged to include Business & Management among your Band A application choices for concurrent consideration. Students at school-based and program-based routes will follow an identical broad curriculum in their first three terms.

International Qualifications

GBUS considers a wide range of international qualifications. Students applying with international qualifications are expected to fulfill the General Admissions Requirements (GAR) and English Language Requirements (ELAR). We do not have any preferred subjects in public examinations as we value the diversity of our students’ backgrounds.

For IB students, an IB score of 41 or above will typically be considered competitive in academic achievement. Apart from your IB score, we also review the overall strength of the application, together with compulsory interviews.

We review the overall strength of the application in addition to the GCEAL/IAL score. In recent years, we admitted students with 3A* or above in GCEAL/IAL.

Yes. If you have extra qualifications, you may include them in your application profile. It will supplement your application and assist the School to review your application holistically.

Your personal statement is all about you as a mature individual. We expect to see in your personal statement your strength, passion, aspiration, significant learning experience, logical thinking, or any information you feel will be of interest to the selection panel. It would be great to learn that you are a good fit with GBUS core values and potential to benefit from, add value, and contribute to our community. There is no restriction on your personal statement with regard to its format, content, length, etc.

CV is a track record of initiatives and achievements that best represent yourself, i.e., leadership, community services, sports, projects, competitions, etc. A one-page highlights your recent and most significant experience and achievements.

No. HKUST does not offer Spring admissions. All students shall start their academic year in September.

GBUS admits students and gives firm or conditional offers on a rolling basis. Thus, we encourage students who are interested in joining us to apply early in the Early Round Application. You do not have to initiate a new application for the Main Round application if you did not hear any results from the Early Round. We will automatically consider your application for the Main Round application.

We start conducting interviews with shortlisted candidates in late November. Interview invitations will be sent to shortlisted candidates on a rolling basis. We usually will arrange a face-to-face interview. In case the candidate could not attend the face-to-face one, an online interview might be an alternative.

Yes, you can still update supporting documents after application submission. Make sure the documents are submitted as early as possible. For documents that are not yet available at the point when the application is submitted, please make sure you indicate the "Expected Upload Date" in the "Supporting Documents" section.

Composing a personal statement using personal statement humour is not as easy as in a college essay. You’ve got to focus on the idea and flow of thoughts to be concise and go straight to the point. Besides, consider if you create an HKU personal statement for a postgraduate application or an undergraduate one. This can have a bearing on how you write your documents and what you write in them.

✰  Don’t miss the opportunity and get a winning HKUST personal statement now!  ✰

A graduate school personal statement is more challenging to write since HKU officers would expect more from your output compared to what they would expect from an undergraduate statement. It can be difficult for some people, which is what personal statement services are usually for.

Nevertheless, let’s make it easier by following these dos and don’ts when composing your HKU personal statement:

  • Use the allowable number of words and include as much as you can while being concise and direct to the point
  • Showcase your strengths
  • Integrate your personality when composing your HKU personal statement
  • Add significant details and share relevant experiences
  • Show your interest in your chosen HKU program
  • Make sure it shows that you are looking toward the future
  • Do not let HKUST personal statement topics revolve around you (also discuss the school and what it can give you)
  • Never lie and tell only the truth about yourself and what you want from the school
  • Avoid punctuation and grammar errors in your personal statement HKUST
  • Avoid using jargon and street language
  • Don’t boast, and don’t include meaningless content to meet the number of words required for the HKU personal statement
  • Never talk about other universities you may also be considering
  • Don’t start with “I” in every sentence

How to Get into HKUST Business School: HKUST Essay Tips and Examples

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School asks candidates to submit two brief essays as part of their application. The first concerns the applicant’s self-assessed strengths and how they have applied them in the past in a beneficial way. The second essay involves basic topics commonly seen in business school applications: one’s professional goals and how attending the school can help in achieving them. Any applicants who feel the need to share more information with the admissions committee can use the optional essay to do so. Read on for our more in-depth analysis of all the program’s prompts.

HKUST 2023–2024 Essay Tips

Essay 1: what are your strengths please also share an example of how you have used your strengths to make a difference at work or outside of work. (max 350 words).

We think we do not really have to state this, but just in case, be honest about your strengths in this essay, and do not try to “guess” what the committee wants to hear. Be truthful in describing who you legitimately are and what you have been able to accomplish by applying yourself. Transparent or disingenuous statements will not fool or convince anyone and will only reveal you as someone incapable of critical self-evaluation.

We encourage you to first thoroughly and thoughtfully brainstorm to identify your most compelling and revelatory possible responses. Where do you feel you truly excel? What do you repeatedly bring to the table that has allowed you to make meaningful contributions? It might be a hard skill, such as an aptitude for coding or managing finances. It could be a softer skill, such as being able to communicate easily with a wide range of people in just about any circumstance. And do not discount qualities such as empathy and creativity that might lead you to view situations in ways that others do not, thereby allowing you to identify opportunities for change/improvement that others overlook.

With respect to offering an illustrative example of your strengths in action, you want to be able to “own” your answer—as we like to say—meaning that no other applicant could write exactly the same thing as you do, even if the qualities or stories you choose to highlight are very similar. For example, writing something like “One of my greatest strengths is compassion, and I’ve made a difference in my community by volunteering with the local homeless shelter” would be far too general a response and could likely be stated by multiple applicants. Instead, something much more specific like “dedicated every Saturday morning for three years to helping cook and serve breakfast at the local homeless shelter, for which I also devised a bulk-shopping plan that now saves the organization hundreds of dollars each quarter” would stand out for its originality and paint a clearer picture of the candidate who wrote it with respect to their values, dedication, and fiscal creativity. In addition, using a narrative approach is a good way to paint a dynamic picture of how you conduct yourself and to engage your reader.

Essay 2: What are your short and long-term goals. How do you plan to use HKUST’s MBA program to help you achieve those goals? (Max 350 words)

The HKUST admissions committee is simply looking for some rather straightforward information here. With 350 words, you should have plenty of space to outline your professional and business school aspirations in a direct and concise way. Ideally, the connection between your short-term objective and your long-term one will be readily evident and feasible. If not, provide whatever context or explanation is necessary for the admissions committee to understand your intended trajectory and why the transition from one to the other makes sense and should be attainable for you.

You must also illustrate how you believe HKUST will help you pursue and attain your stated goals. The most effective way of doing this is by demonstrating a thorough understanding of what the school offers and presenting a well-thought-out game plan for availing yourself of particular resources. To write a reasoned, nuanced essay, you must first familiarize yourself well with HKUST’s various resources, events, and extracurriculars and pinpoint those that truly pertain to you and the direction in which you hope to move.

Go the extra mile in learning about the school—connect with multiple students and alumni, attend admissions events or visit the campus (if possible), read recent press releases from the program and any news stories about it published elsewhere, and check out the HKUST Business School’s YouTube channel . This will provide the kind of in-depth insight that will show the admissions committee you are really serious about the program and are confident you belong there. Simply presenting a list of classes and clubs you think sound interesting will not suffice, and you absolutely want to avoid vague, pandering statements about how great you think the school is. You must reveal clear connections between your aspirations, what you need to achieve them (e.g., skills, experience[s], connections, exposure), and what HKUST in particular can provide that will enable you to fill those gaps.

This prompt covers basic elements of a traditional personal statement, so we encourage you to download a free copy of our mbaMission Personal Statement Guide , in which we explain in more detail how to write effectively on these topics.

Optional Essay: What else would you like the admissions committee to know about you and your application? (Max 250 words)

With this prompt, the admissions committee is acknowledging that some candidates have aspects of their profiles that might need a little clarification or that warrant a special mention. This essay could therefore be your opportunity—if you need one—to address any lingering questions that an admissions officer might have about your candidacy, such as a low GRE or GMAT score, a legal or disciplinary incident, a gap in your professional records, or an unusual choice of recommender.

That said, HKUST leaves the door open for you to discuss any other information about your candidacy that you feel might be pivotal or particularly compelling—that you think the admissions committee truly needs to know to be able to evaluate you fully and effectively (and that might not have been appropriate for either of the required essays). We caution you against submitting a response to this prompt just because you fear that not doing so would somehow count against you, though (it will not). Remember that with each additional essay you write, you are asking the admissions committee to do extra work on your behalf, so you must make sure that the added time is warranted. If you decide to use this essay to impart information that you believe would render your application incomplete if omitted, strive to keep your submission brief and on point.

If you feel you might have a valid reason for submitting this additional essay or are not sure whether the issue you are considering would warrant doing so, we encourage you to download a free copy of our mbaMission Optional Essays Guide , in which we offer detailed advice on when and how to take advantage of the optional essay, along with multiple sample essays.
