The Graduate Student Program is run in collaboration with the Department of Medicine’s Experimental Medicine Program. The Experimental Medicine Program is intended for individuals seeking a career in research.

The Department of Medicine offers opportunities and facilities for advanced studies in Experimental medicine, leading toward the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Members of the Department direct research programs in a wide range of basic and clinically relevant areas. There are a variety of special interest areas of national and international stature.

Dr. Tricia Tang is the Director of the Experimental Medicine Program .

The objectives of the program are:

  • To teach the student the application of modern techniques in research.
  • To develop within the student the ability to read and criticize scientific literature, and to know the current state of knowledge in their particular field.
  • To teach the student to accurately define a problem and to design experiments which solve problems according to scientific standards.
  • To teach the student to conduct research on an independent basis.
  • To develop in all students the ability to communicate results of their research to the scientific community.

Research Fellowships

The Department of Dermatology is proud to host several Research Fellowship opportunities.

  Clinical Research Fellowships

All fellowships will be accepting applicants until 2/1/2024. Any application received after 2/1/2024 will only be considered on a rolling basis if fellowship positions become available. Fellowship applications will be reviewed in early February, followed by interviews and offer notifications by end of March 2024.

For MD Graduates

Clinical research fellowships are one to two years in duration (July 1 to June 30) and are based at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) and   Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago . Fellowships are offered preferentially to physicians with at least one year of internship training and to those who wish to pursue further training in dermatology. The Lurie Children's fellowship is preferentially offered to physicians with some previous training in pediatrics and who are IL-license eligible.

These paid fellowships provide an opportunity for intense exposure to both investigator-initiated and sponsored research, interaction with patients and participation in didactic sessions in Dermatology at NMH and Lurie Children's.

For Predoctoral Medical Students

Visiting predoctoral clinical research fellowships are one year in duration and are based at NMH and Lurie Children's. Fellowships are offered to medical students who have completed M3 year and wish to complete a year dedicated to research to further their training in dermatology. These fellowships are unpaid but provide an opportunity for intense exposure to the field, interaction with patients and participation in didactic sessions in Dermatology at NMH and Lurie Children's.

  CounterACT Summer Research Fellowship Program

Program information.

The Northwestern University CounterACT Summer Research Fellowship Program provides opportunities for promising high school and undergraduate students to experience focused research work, clinical observation, and informational sessions on toxicology, chemistry, immunology, nanotechnology, ophthalmology, and dermatology.

If you are interested in science and are looking for meaningful work and mentoring, we encourage you to spend the summer with us in the NU CounterACT Center for Excellence. Our summer research fellowship provides you with an opportunity to work at a premier academic medical center and to learn more about careers in research. The fellowship will involve research experiences on both the Evanston and Downtown Chicago Northwestern campuses, as well as virtual seminars. Our fellows participate in clinical observation, work on faculty-sponsored projects and engage in educational seminars from renowned leaders throughout our institution.

This  eight-week, full-time, paid program  runs Monday through Thursday and is open to students who are 16 years and older. Positions are available at the high school and undergraduate level. Candidates should be interested in science research with a minimum GPA of 3.0  

Our summer 2024 internship will tentatively run from  June 12, 2024 and through August 16, 2024.

We require applicants to hold, or be about to obtain, an Upper Second class Honours degree, or the equivalent qualification gained outside the UK, in a related subject area for entry to a PhD programme. A Lower Second class Honours degree may be considered if applicants also hold a Master's degree with a Merit classification.
