VVS Laxman: A batsman of ‘captivating splendour’ – Almanack

vvs laxman biography in english wikipedia

VVS Laxman was the key architect of India’s historic win over Australia in Kolkata in 2001, striking an iconic 281 to help the hosts break Australia’s incredible winning run. Dicky Rutnagur paid tribute to him when he was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2002.

For two reasons at least, the second Test of the 2000/01 series between India and Australia, at Eden Gardens, will stand out among the most prominent landmarks in the game’s history. India’s win brought to an end Australia’s awesome run of 16 wins, the longest ever, and no side following on as far behind as 274 runs had previously come back to win a Test match.

Victory against such heavy odds was too large a feat to be accomplished by just one man. Indeed, three architects went into shaping it: off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, whose 13 wickets included a first-innings hat-trick, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid. To weigh importance of the roles played by each of them might seem unfair, but in truth India owed the largest debt to Laxman. First, he kept the jaws of defeat wrenched apart until they ached and became too weak to snap; and secondly, he scored his epic 281 in the second innings at a rate that left enough time for Harbhajan and his fellow-bowlers to finish the job.

Laxman’s Eden Gardens knock was a record-breaking one

The first Test at Mumbai had been won by Australia in three days. And when India were 317 behind with only two wickets standing at the end of the second day in Kolkata, the prospects of another premature finish were writ large. Laxman was 26 not out that evening. He was unbeaten also – albeit now in the second innings – on the following evening, and again on the one after, this time with 275, the highest Test score by an Indian. By then, it was India whose nostrils were filled with the scent of victory. Haste required by the impending declaration deprived Laxman of further personal glory, but his partnership of 376 with Dravid was India’s largest for any wicket against Australia, and their second-highest ever.

Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman was born on November 1, 1974 in Hyderabad, to parents who are both doctors – his father a general practitioner and his mother a radiologist. It was taken for granted that Laxman, like almost all members of his near family, would take up a profession that required academic excellence, and he was therefore sent to an appropriate school, Little Flower. His father was Laxman’s role model and he always assumed he would become a doctor as well. But medicine receded into stand-by mode once he fell under cricket’s spell.

Yet with sport not figuring in Little Flower’s curriculum, Laxman’s talent could easily have remained latent. It was spotted by a cricket-playing uncle during family games in his grandparents’ back yard. Having learnt the basics from this uncle, he then went to St John’s Coaching Foundation for more advanced tutoring, and from there graduated to playing age-group cricket for Hyderabad, beginning with the Under-13s.

As Laxman approached his 18th birthday, his head and his heart were both telling him that his future lay in cricket. The defining moment arrived when he had to choose between exams for entrance to medical school, or a place at an Under-19 national coaching camp. Looking back to that fateful day, he said: “I decided to give myself four years to make it in cricket, knowing that if I didn’t, I could always go for medicine. My parents must have had many misgivings about my decision, but they gave me their fullest support.”

He did not have to wait long to reassure his parents that he had chosen wisely. Already a full state player, he was picked for India in an Under-19 Test series against Australia, who had Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee, Matthew Nicholson and Andrew Symonds in their ranks. He made four big scores against them, with 151 not out his best, giving early evidence of his taste for Australian bowling (his average against Australia is currently 56.00). A call to full colours was only a matter of time, and while he waited he had an extremely successful Under-19 tour of England. He began the “Test” series with a century on a blissful Taunton pitch.

Laxman gets under a Glenn McGrath bumper

As Laxman grew to full strength, tall and elegant, and big scores became more frequent, his batting acquired a captivating splendour. His driving possessed a Dexterian majesty and his flicked drive through mid-wicket stirred the senses. He was capped in 1996/97, a winter in which India played home-and-away series against South Africa, followed by five Tests in the West Indies. Laxman played eight Tests during this span and passed 50 three times. Indeed, he was given a fair run, but without being allowed a secure place in the batting order; in the Caribbean, he found himself opening, a role for which he had no taste.

His Test career went into a trough and might well have ended on the Australian tour of 1999/2000, when India were whitewashed 0-3. But in his final innings there, at Sydney, he hit a sumptuous 167 out of a total of 261, from only 198 balls. It was, one thought at the time, the sort of innings a batsman plays once in a lifetime. And so it seemed it would be when he was dropped after India’s Mumbai defeat by South Africa not quite two months later. His volume of runs in that season’s Ranji Trophy, a record 1,415 with a record eight hundreds, might almost have been mocking him. In Hyderabad’s semi-final against Karnataka, he made 353, his fourth score at the time over 200.

Laxman achieved little in his one Test when Zimbabwe visited, or for that matter in the first Test against the Australians. That Sydney century seemed a long time ago. But promoted to his favourite No.3 position for the second innings at Eden Gardens, he bettered it handsomely, sustaining his brilliance for ten and a half hours, during which he faced 452 balls. Half-centuries in both innings of the final Test helped India take the series 2-1; they also took his aggregate for the three matches to 503 at an average of 83.83. Medicine would just have to wait a while longer for VVS Laxman.

Laxman played his 134th and final Test in January 2012, finishing his international career with 17 Test centuries.

VVS Laxman | Who played the greatest Test innings ever

article_image

Describing him, Harsha Bhogle had impeccably put, “Always the artist, never the superstar.”

Perhaps the most elegant player to have never played a World Cup match, VVS Laxman ’s career was both magnificent and middling at the same time. While there was no limit to his talent, his inconsistency played a big hindrance in his rise to greatness.

However, the player would surely have little regrets following his 2001 innings against world-beater Australia at the Eden Gardens, which went on to define his entire career.

Prior to that knock against Australia, Laxman was largely a floater in the Indian side, being asked to bat between the top and middle order frequently, which not only affected his form but also his confidence.

Though Laxman would make his Test debut back in 1996, his first century came four years later in 2000 during India’s tour of Australia. And although Laxman’s fighting 167 in Sydney as an opener did make a case, it was what came four matches later that finally cemented his place as one of the best middle-order batsmen in India’s Test cricket history.

It was when the Test series was at stake and the hosts were desperately trying to save the match after being forced a follow-on that Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman had decided to announce himself on the world stage. Having hit the Australians for 12 boundaries in the first innings had led the Indian think tank to send Laxman at number 3 in the second innings, ahead of Sachin Tendulkar. And the rest was history.

Here's wishing one of #TeamIndia 's most stylish batsmen, @VVSLaxman281 a very happy birthday 🎂🍰 Relive his stupendous knock of 281 against Australia #HappyBirthdayVVSLaxman pic.twitter.com/5ljdNdgSay — BCCI (@BCCI) November 1, 2018

Laxman would survive 631 minutes against the likes of Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne to score 281 runs and forge a mammoth 376-run stand with Rahul Dravid. Not only that knock won India the match but the momentum was enough to win them the series 2-1.

After the 2001 Test, Ian Chappell had famously told Shane Warne, “You didn’t bowl badly, you just came up against the player who I think is the best batsman of spin bowling that I have seen.”

Quite interestingly, Laxman had an intense liking for the Australians. The no.1 Test side that was feared by all in the early 2000s, was Laxman’s favourite opponent. He tallied a whopping 2434 runs against them in just 29 matches with an average of 49.67, the best of which came during India’s tour of Australia in 2003.

Laxman was at his fluid best on that tour tallying 494 across four Tests, which included a 148 and a 178, thus forcing the Australians to admit that they didn’t know where to ball against Laxman. Laxman’s flicks were almost as effortless as his idol Mohammad Azharuddin, but the former was gifted with much finesse across other aspects of the batting.

Laxman, however, loved a dog fight as much as he liked those silky strokes, and his unbeaten 73 against Australia in Mohali is a testament to that. India had lost the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir and many more. Things got further tricker as the only proper batsman at the crease, Laxman, was nursing a back injury. However, the Hyderabadi would take a runner and win the match for India with Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha at the other end.

While most of Laxman’s memorable knocks came against Australia, one can’t forget his 96 in South Africa against a raging Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel, or his 122 against England in Nottinghamshire in 2002, which brought iconic victories for India.

Given his aggressive batting and brilliant strokeplay, one would have expected him to dominate the white-ball cricket. But, his tally of 2338 in 86 ODIs looks pale in comparison to the 8781 runs in 134 Tests. Laxman had 17 centuries in Tests.

Laxman’s single biggest issue was consistency and when his form took a turn for the worse during the 2011-12 season, which coincided with India getting whitewashed by England and Australia, calls for him to be removed became louder. He was included in the team to play against New Zealand in Hyderabad, but the batsman surprisingly announced his retirement letting go of a chance to get a farewell from the home crowd.

Attention never suited him and he would go away from the limelight in silence. Describing him, Harsha Bhogle had impeccably put, “Always the artist, never the superstar.”

Biography Of VVS Laxman-The Wristy Genius

Cricketer Biography

VVS Laxman is a former Indian cricketer from Hyderabad. The wristy genius, Laxman was known for exquisite timing and like his role model Mohammed Azharuddin, he too was known for his magical wrist-work.

Laxman was awarded the Padma Shri award, India's fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India in 2011. Laxman scored over 8000 runs in test cricket at a healthy average of over 45. This included 17 centuries and 56 half centuries.

Laxman's parents are noted Physicians and he was also enrolled as a medical student but he later opted cricket as a career over medicine. However, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree on 4 February 2015 by Teri University, New Delhi.

He played many vital knocks for India at crunch situations specially in test cricket that helped the team to won or save the match. His most notable innings was of 281 against Australia at Kolkata in 2001. During this innings, he shared a world record partnership of 376 runs along with Rahul Dravid. The partnership is still a record in 3rd innings of a test match for any wicket during a winning cause. His innings was ranked sixth in Wisden's list of 100 great Test innings in the history of the game.

"When he walks in, whether you are batting in the middle or sitting in the pavilion and a wicket has fallen, he brings calm to the whole dressing room. I, personally, get a feeling of calm and solidity, not because Laxman will always score but because you know that he will never let you down in terms of effort: you know that he is there and he will pull his weight. There is no higher compliment. You know he has the requisite quality, and that he can read situations well. He has turned up in every circumstance: bad pitches, good pitches, when setting a total or after the opposition has piled up a big score." - Rahul Dravid in a column after Laxman had played his 100th Test

India's VVS Laxman announces retirement from cricket

India's VVS Laxman comes out on to the ground in Sydney. The veteran batsman said, "I am retiring with immediate effect. I think this is the right time to move on."

Veteran Indian batsman Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday, saying it was time to make way for the next generation. "I am retiring with immediate effect. I think this is the right time to move on," the stylish middle-order batsman, who turns 38 in November, told reporters in his home city of Hyderabad. "I have always kept the country's success ahead of personal aspirations. I think it is time to give youngsters a chance at home ahead of a tough season. Laxman, better known by his initials VVS, played 134 Tests since his debut in 1996, scoring 8,781 runs at an average of 45.97 with 17 centuries and 56 fifties. He also scored 2,338 runs in 86 one-day internationals with six hundreds, but had not been part of India's limited-overs squad since 2006. Laxman decided to call it a day even though he was included in the Indian squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand starting in front of home fans in Hyderabad on Thursday. "Till last night I was unable to make up my mind, but in the end I listened to my inner voice and arrived at my decision to retire," he said.

Steve Waugh's Australians, set a target of 384 runs, folded up for 212 in their second knock, following a six-wicket haul by Harbhajan Singh, to leave India improbable victors by 171 runs. Laxman's 10-hour masterclass which contained 44 boundaries is often regarded as the best match-winning innings played by an Indian batsman. Laxman is the fourth senior Indian cricketer to retire in the last four years, leaving batting master Sachin Tendulkar the last of the veterans to hold fort in a period of transition. Anil Kumble and Sourav Ganguly retired within a month of each other in 2008, while Dravid called it quits in March this year. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid glowing tributes to Laxman, saying he was an "exceptional cricketer, who excelled in pressure situations". "Not many batsmen made batting look as easy as VVS Laxman," BCCI president Narayanaswamy Srinivasan said in a statement. "If a cricketer's greatness is to be measured in terms of his performances against the best opposition of his time, then Laxman stands right at the top. "Indian cricket-lovers, and the game of cricket itself, will miss him for the elegance and grace that he epitomised, on and off the field."

"I informed the chairman of selectors (Krishnamachari Srikkanth) this morning that I am not going to continue playing for India. I also spoke to many of my team-mates. "They were surprised that I was retiring before the series. It was all very emotional." Laxman was retained for the Kiwi matches despite failing miserably in the last two Test series in England and Australia, both of which India lost 4-0 and were dethroned as the number one side. He managed just 182 runs in four Tests in England at an average of 22.75 and fared even worse in Australia with 155 runs in four matches at 19.37. "No one likes to lose, so of course it was very disappointing to lose those two series very badly," said Laxman. "But it happens in sport. Hopefully, the team will avenge those defeats this season." Both England and Australia are due to play four Tests each in India on either side of the new year. Laxman is best known for his majestic 281 against Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in March 2001, when India turned the tables on the world champions after being made to follow-on 274 runs behind. When India struggled at 232-4 in the second innings and faced certain defeat, Laxman and Rahul Dravid (180) put on a match-winning partnership of 376 to help their team post 657-7 declared.
