Traditionally, book reviews are written evaluations of a recently published book in any genre. Usually, around the 500 to 700-word mark, they offer a brief description of a text’s main elements while appraising the work’s strengths and weaknesses. Published book reviews can appear in newspapers, magazines, and academic journals. They provide the reader with an overview of the book itself and indicate whether or not the reviewer would recommend the book to the reader.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A BOOK REVIEW?

There was a time when book reviews were a regular appearance in every quality newspaper and many periodicals. They were essential elements in whether or not a book would sell well. A review from a heavyweight critic could often be the deciding factor in whether a book became a bestseller or a damp squib. In the last few decades, however, the book review’s influence has waned considerably, with many potential book buyers preferring to consult customer reviews on Amazon, or sites like Goodreads, before buying. As a result, book review’s appearance in newspapers, journals, and digital media has become less frequent.

WHY BOTHER TEACHING STUDENTS TO WRITE BOOK REVIEWS AT ALL?

Even in the heyday of the book review’s influence, few students who learned the craft of writing a book review became literary critics! The real value of crafting a well-written book review for a student does not lie in their ability to impact book sales. Understanding how to produce a well-written book review helps students to:

●     Engage critically with a text

●     Critically evaluate a text

●     Respond personally to a range of different writing genres

●     Improve their own reading, writing, and thinking skills.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BOOK REVIEW AND A BOOK REPORT?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there are clear differences in both the purpose and the format of the two genres. Generally speaking, book reports aim to give a more detailed outline of what occurs in a book. A book report on a work of fiction will tend to give a comprehensive account of the characters, major plot lines, and themes in the book. Book reports are usually written around the K-12 age range, while book reviews tend not to be undertaken by those at the younger end of this age range due to the need for the higher-level critical skills required in writing them. At their highest expression, book reviews are written at the college level and by professional critics.

ELEMENTS OF A BOOK REVIEW

As with any of the writing genres we teach our students, a book review can be helpfully explained in terms of criteria. While there is much to the ‘art’ of writing, there is also, thankfully, a lot of the nuts and bolts that can be listed too. Have students consider the following elements before writing:

●     Title: Often, the title of the book review will correspond to the title of the text itself, but there may also be some examination of the title’s relevance. How does it fit into the purpose of the work as a whole? Does it convey a message or reveal larger themes explored within the work?

●     Author: Within the book review, there may be some discussion of who the author is and what they have written before, especially if it relates to the current work being reviewed. There may be some mention of the author’s style and what they are best known for. If the author has received any awards or prizes, this may also be mentioned within the body of the review.

●     Genre: A book review will identify the genre that the book belongs to, whether fiction or nonfiction, poetry, romance, science-fiction, history etc. The genre will likely tie in, too with who the intended audience for the book is and what the overall purpose of the work is.

●     Book Jacket / Cover: Often, a book’s cover will contain artwork that is worthy of comment. It may contain interesting details related to the text that contribute to, or detract from, the work as a whole.

●     Structure: The book’s structure will often be heavily informed by its genre. Have students examine how the book is organized before writing their review. Does it contain a preface from a guest editor, for example? Is it written in sections or chapters? Does it have a table of contents, index, glossary etc.? While all these details may not make it into the review itself, looking at how the book is structured may reveal some interesting aspects.

●     Publisher and Price: A book review will usually contain details of who publishes the book and its cost. A review will often provide details of where the book is available too.

BOOK REVIEW KEY ELEMENTS

As students read and engage with the work they will review, they will develop a sense of the shape their review will take. This will begin with the summary. Encourage students to take notes during the reading of the work that will help them in writing the summary that will form an essential part of their review. Aspects of the book they may wish to take notes on in a work of fiction may include:

●     Characters: Who are the main characters? What are their motivations? Are they convincingly drawn? Or are they empathetic characters?

●     Themes: What are the main themes of the work? Are there recurring motifs in the work? Is the exploration of the themes deep or surface only?

●     Style: What are the key aspects of the writer’s style? How does it fit into the wider literary world?

●     Plot: What is the story’s main catalyst? What happens in the rising action? What are the story’s subplots? 

A book review will generally begin with a short summary of the work itself. However, it is important not to give too much away, remind students – no spoilers, please! For nonfiction works, this may be a summary of the main arguments of the work, again, without giving too much detail away. In a work of fiction, a book review will often summarise up to the rising action of the piece without going beyond to reveal too much!

The summary should also provide some orientation for the reader. Given the nature of the purpose of a review, it is important that students’ consider their intended audience in the writing of their review. Readers will most likely not have read the book in question and will require some orientation. This is often achieved through introductions to the main characters, themes, primary arguments etc. This will help the reader to gauge whether or not the book is of interest to them.

Once your student has summarized the work, it is time to ‘review’ in earnest. At this point, the student should begin to detail their own opinion of the book. To do this well they should:

i. Make It Personal

Often when teaching essay writing we will talk to our students about the importance of climbing up and down the ladder of abstraction. Just as it is helpful to explore large, more abstract concepts in an essay by bringing it down to Earth, in a book review, it is important that students can relate the characters, themes, ideas etc to their own lives.

Book reviews are meant to be subjective. They are opinion pieces, and opinions grow out of our experiences of life. Encourage students to link the work they are writing about to their own personal life within the body of the review. By making this personal connection to the work, students contextualize their opinions for the readers and help them to understand whether the book will be of interest to them or not in the process.

ii. Make It Universal

Just as it is important to climb down the ladder of abstraction to show how the work relates to individual life, it is important to climb upwards on the ladder too. Students should endeavor to show how the ideas explored in the book relate to the wider world. The may be in the form of the universality of the underlying themes in a work of fiction or, for example, the international implications for arguments expressed in a work of nonfiction.

iii. Support Opinions with Evidence

A book review is a subjective piece of writing by its very nature. However, just because it is subjective does not mean that opinions do not need to be justified. Make sure students understand how to back up their opinions with various forms of evidence, for example, quotations, statistics, and the use of primary and secondary sources.

As with any writing genre, encourage students to polish things up with review and revision at the end. Encourage them to proofread and check for accurate spelling throughout, with particular attention to the author’s name, character names, publisher etc. 

It is good practice too for students to double-check their use of evidence. Are statements supported? Are the statistics used correctly? Are the quotations from the text accurate? Mistakes such as these uncorrected can do great damage to the value of a book review as they can undermine the reader’s confidence in the writer’s judgement.

The discipline of writing book reviews offers students opportunities to develop their writing skills and exercise their critical faculties. Book reviews can be valuable standalone activities or serve as a part of a series of activities engaging with a central text. They can also serve as an effective springboard into later discussion work based on the ideas and issues explored in a particular book. Though the book review does not hold the sway it once did in the mind’s of the reading public, it still serves as an effective teaching tool in our classrooms today.

In my opinion Pokémon is the best book and movie in the world and I love it and It’s awesome. Pokémon was created by Satoshi Tajiri .My favorite character is Ash from Palet town . He is training to be the best of Pokémon going from the Kanto Region to the Galel Region . The Pokémon world is the most fascinating place in the world. You Catch Pokémon with your starter Pokemon once you have seven Pokémon you can battle a Jim leader. If you beat the Jim leader you get a badge and you keep on doing that until you have 108 badges then you can battle against the master of Pokémon if you win you are the master but if you lose you are just a normal trainer. I love reading Pokémon maybe you should read it bye!!!

This book was about a bird who didn't yet know how to fly.

The bird has to decide if it will try to fly, but it was not sure if it wants to. The bird thought, "If I never forever endeavor" then I won't ever learn. On one wing, he worries he might fail and on the other wing he thinks of how he may succeed. He worries that if he tries, he may get lost in the world. That makes him want to stay in his nest where he's safe.

I think this book would help other children to learn that trying new things can be scary, but sometimes when we try, we can find things that make us happy too. And this book will help others know that mistakes are okay and part of learning.

My favorite part is that the bird tried and learned that she could fly. I also liked that I read this book because it gave me a chance to talk to mom about making mistakes and how I don't like making them. Then I learned they are good and part of learning.

Boys and girls who are 3 to 8 years old would like this book because it teaches about trying a new thing and how it's important to get past being scared so you can learn new things.

I give the book 5 stars since I think it's important for other children to learn about courage.

I liked this book. People who are interested in national disasters and US history as well as immigration will most probably be interested in reading this book.

Readers can gain knowledge of what it was like to work in New York City in the early 1900s. One of the things that was especially interesting was that there were no safety laws at work. Also, there was a big contrast between the rich and the poor. Some people may not like this book because it is very depressing, but it is an important event in history to remember.

This book was very well written. It has black and white photos along with descriptions of the photos. These photos give us a better idea of what people's lives were like. This book is suitable for 9-20 year olds.

I give this book 5 stars.

Journey To Juno is the second book of the Galaxy Zack series. It is just as good as the first one. It's awesome!

Zack joins the Sprockets Academy Explorers Club at school. They fly on a special trip to Juno, a new planet no one has ever visited. Zack gets paired up with Seth, the class bully, and that's dreadful but Zack is excited when he finds a huge galaxy gemmite. A gemmite that large had not been found in 100 years! Kids will love this book!

Boys and girls will both like it. It's an easy chapter book with pictures on every page. I love the illustrations. I think ages 6-8 would like this but younger kids would like the story being read to them.

My favorite parts are the galactic blast game (it is similar to baseball except there are robots playing), recess at Zack's school where everything is 3-D holographic images, the rainbow river in a crystal cave on Juno, and the galaxy gemmite that Zack finds on Juno. I also loved when a life-size holographic image of his Earth friend appears in Zack's room because he calls him on a hyperphone. I give this book one hundred stars! There is a "to be continued" at the end so you have to read the next book see what's in store. I can't wait to find out what happens!!!

Dodie Smith's novel I Capture the Castle is a journey through the mind of a young writer as she attempts to chronicle her daily life. Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain has recently learned to speed-write, and she decides to work on her writing skills by describing the actions and conversations of those around her.

Cassandra lives in a fourteenth-century English castle with an interesting cast of characters: her beautiful older sister, Rose; her rather unsociable author father and his second wife, artist-model Topaz; Stephen, the garden boy; a cat and a bull terrier; and sometimes her brother Thomas when he is home from school. One fateful day they make the acquaintance of the Cotton family, including the two sons, and a web of tangled relationships ensues.

While I definitely recommend this book to other readers, I would recommend it to older teenagers, mainly because it will resonate better with them. The writing is tame enough that younger teens could also read it, but most of the characters are adults or on the verge of adulthood. Older readers would take the most from it since they can not only relate, but they may also better pick up on and appreciate Cassandra's sometimes subtle humor.

Over the course of the novel, Cassandra undergoes a definite transformation from child to mature young adult, even though it's only over the course of several months. I love that I could see into her mindset and read exactly what she was feeling when she thought out situations. Her thoughts flowed well and moved the book along very quickly.

Cassandra's narrative voice is wonderful. She is serious at times, but also very witty, which makes for an engaging read. It feels absolutely real, as though I'm reading someone's actual journal. Sometimes I forget that I am reading a story and not a real-life account. Her emotions and the dialogue are so genuine, and they are spot-on for a seventeen-year-old girl in her situation.

Cassandra has many wonderful insights on life, on topics ranging from writing to faith to matters of the heart. I personally have had some of the same thoughts as Cassandra, except Ms. Smith was able to put them into words.

I appreciated Frankenstein's Cat for its fascinating explanation about the often baffling subject of bioengineering and its sister sciences. Emily Anthes explains the many sides of today's modern technology, such as gene modification, cloning, pharmaceutical products (from the farm), prosthesis, animal tag and tracking and gene cryogenics. This book provides a well-rounded summary of these complicated sciences without being boring or simply factual. Her real world examples take us on a journey from the farm, to the pet store and then from the pharmacy to the frozen arc.

Have you ever wondered if the neighborhood cat is spying on you? Read about Operation Acoustic Kitty and find out if this feline fantasy fiction or fact. Do you think bugs are creepy? What about a zombified cyborg beetle? Is Fido so special that you want two of him? Money can buy you an almost exact copy of your pooch BUT don't expect the same personality. Emily Anthes makes you crave more information. She makes you want to know the future of Earth's flora and fauna, as well as humanity itself.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who desires a guide to the future of biological science and technology. Frankenstein's Cat is best read by the light of a glow-in-the-dark fish, while cuddling your favorite cloned dog and drinking a glass of genetically modified milk.

About Marsupials is the title so the book is about...marsupials, of course. It's non-fiction. I really think everyone would like the book. I think someone who likes animals would especially like to read it.

The glossary of facts in the back of About Marsupials is the most useful part. I thought the most interesting parts were that some marsupials have their pouch at their back legs and one marsupial, the Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby, is very small but can jump 13 feet wide!

Kids in the 4-8 age range would like this book. Even though it's not a story book, 4 year olds would like the few words on each page and they would love the beautiful pictures. But older kids would like it because of all the facts in the back of the book. There's a lot of information for each animal. I think boys and girls (and parents) would enjoy reading it. This book is very interesting. I give it 4 stars.

Every day, people around the world use maps. Whether it is an airplane pilot or businessman, housewife or museum group, maps have always and will continue to provide useful information for all.

Mapping the World talks about the uses of maps, as well as how to differentiate between the type of map projection and type of map.

In this series, we travel to the past and learn about historical mapmakers, from Claudius Ptolemy (who stated the idea that the Earth is at the center of the universe) to Gerardus Mercator (who created one of the most widely used map projections) and more. This series goes into tremendous detail on the cartographer's life and maps. We then journey to the present era to learn about map projections and the diverse types of maps used today. You might ask, "What is the difference between the two? They sound the same to me." No map projection is perfect, because you cannot really flatten a sphere into a rectangle. An uncolored projection could be used in many ways. We could use it for population concentration, highways, land elevation, and so many other things!

For example, we could make a topographic map of the U.S., which shows land elevation. We could make it a colorful map that shows the amount of pollution in different areas, or it could be a population map, or it could even be a map that shows the 50 states, their capitals and borders! Our last step in this amazing excursion is the near future, where we see some hypothetical solutions as to what maps will be used for. Currently, we are working on better virtual map technology.

Now, scientists have been able to put maps on phones. Back in the early 1900s, people had to lug a lot of maps around to find your way from place to place, or just keep asking for directions. Now, all the information is on a phone or global positioning system (GPS). It is amazing how much maps have changed technology and the world in this century.

The Tyranny of English

A new novel from the prolific translator Jennifer Croft challenges the dominance of the language.

In the fall of 2021, the American writer and translator Jennifer Croft published an essay in The Guardian that provoked a spirited conversation within the English-speaking literary world. Why, she asked, were translators expected to remain coyly, politely invisible, with their names more often than not cast off from book covers by publishers? This practice, she pointed out, overlooks the labor that goes into these books: It is the translators, after all, who “choose every word they will contain.”

Now Croft, who is perhaps best known for her English translations of the Polish Nobel Laureate Olga Tokarczuk (she also works in Spanish and Ukrainian), is again weighing in on the ethics of translation, but this time she’s approaching the subject in the form of a novel. The Extinction of Irena Rey follows eight translators on a retreat located at the edge of a remote Polish forest. These characters have gathered to translate the latest novel by the glamorous Irena Rey, a “household name” in Poland. “We were all in love with her,” claims Emi, a Spanish-language translator from Buenos Aires. “We treated her every word as sacred, even though our whole task was to replace her every word.” The plan falls apart almost immediately when Irena unexpectedly disappears, leaving the translators in search of their author. Metatextual chaos ensues.

On its surface, The Extinction of Irena Rey is a literary whodunit, with whiffs of the kind of semiotic absurdity seen in works such as Luigi Pirandello’s 1921 play, Six Characters in Search of an Author , in which six “unfinished” characters, abandoned by the author who created them, look for someone to complete their story. Croft is extremely good at poking fun at the conventions and excesses of the literary world without getting too deep in the weeds: An early novel of Irena’s is “hailed by critics as both ‘scorchingly real’ and ‘chillingly allegorical,’” a nod to the ways in which blurbs and book reviews can be so over-the-top as to contradict one another. Irena herself, prone in the book’s initial pages to name-dropping and bragging about her eminence, is quickly brought down to earth: Standing inside Irena’s office, Emi is dismayed to see that “Our Author—likely the greatest author in the world—had organized her books, at least in part, by color .”

Lurking beneath the jokes, though, a deeper inquiry is at play, one concerning the tyranny of the English language in this age of porous borders and digital interconnectivity. The Extinction of Irena Rey is a book within a book: The text we are reading is, in fact, a novel that was written in Polish by Croft’s translator-heroine Emi, and subsequently translated into English by another one of the book’s characters—Alexis Archer, an American translator. “This has been the hardest book I’ve ever had to translate,” Alexis confesses in a note that opens the novel. Why soon becomes apparent, as Croft reveals a professional rivalry between Alexis and Emi that plays out through Emi’s original text and the progressively caustic footnotes Alexis adds to the English edition.

In a book that, for its first 50 or so pages, refers to its translator characters by only their target languages (English, French, Swedish, and so on) rather than their given names, the rivalry between Alexis and Emi—between English and Spanish—becomes an opportunity for Croft to enact a subtle criticism of the Anglophone world’s resistance to learning other languages, and of the global dominance of English. A passage toward the middle of the book, in which the translators liken themselves to an “invasive species” in the greater literary ecosystem, is illuminating: Is the ideal translator one who leaves behind no evidence of their presence? Or is a book, as Alexis argues, a joint process, in which the translator “takes that collaboration, and makes it intercultural”? But in the context of the novel, where all of the translators, save for Alexis, speak English in addition to Polish and their target language, it is hard to believe Alexis’s assertion that translation is a cultural exchange that benefits each language mutually. The power imbalance is too great: When it comes to global prestige and readership—not to mention book sales—the English language almost always wins.

At a pivotal moment in the novel, the characters have banded together to translate into English an excerpt from Grey Eminence , Irena’s latest, under the false impression that she will soon be named a Nobel Prize winner. “I was disgusted that we were all setting aside our own translations into our own equally important target languages in the service of the already hyperprivileged English-language one,” complains Emi. “It was outrageous that Alexis even expected us to have a working knowledge of English in the first place.” Her objections are, of course, in vain: As long as English remains the global lingua franca, an English translation is almost always necessary for a non-Anglophone writer to gain international recognition and prestige.

A tension has long lurked between the roles of writer and translator; the latter is often viewed by both publishers and the public alike as decidedly lesser. Croft’s novel is the latest entry in a conversation reimagining the role of the translator that has become prominent in contemporary literary circles. Works such as Don Mee Choi’s 2020 pamphlet, Translation Is a Mode = Translation Is an Anti-neocolonial Mode , and Kate Briggs’s 2017 book-length essay, This Little Art , have reexamined the history of translation, arguing that the translator’s work can be a tool of subversion and resistance. In the realm of fiction, the French writer Brice Matthieussent's 2010 novel, Revenge of the Translator , depicts a writer and his translator engaged in furious textual battles on the page.

In The Extinction of Irena Rey , conflicts flare between writer and translator, but also among the translators themselves. Emi’s dislike of Alexis, and indeed the influence of the country she represents, grows excessively, manifesting in a humorous compendium of American stereotypes and exaggerations: Emi disparages Halloween as “a commercial U.S. holiday”; Alexis’s Polish is, in Emi’s eyes, barely intelligible; her smile is “unbearably symmetrical.” Alexis shares a foot size with Irena and at one point begins to wear the missing author’s shoes—English threatening to take over Polish. “I knew that what she really wanted was to civilize Irena’s text,” Emi thinks at a moment in which it becomes clear that Alexis is actually altering the content of Irena’s novel, “exactly as you would expect a U.S. usurper to do.” Croft seems to be having fun ventriloquizing these complaints, even throwing her own earlier work into the arena when Emi sniffs at “a strange book called Snakes and Ladders written for some reason in Argentine Spanish by the U.S. translator of Olga Tokarczuk.” (Croft’s Spanish-language autofictional novel, Serpientes y Escaleras , was published in 2019 as a memoir, Homesick , in English.)

Eventually, Irena reappears. This time, the author, rather than the translator, is guilty of usurping stories: Irena, it turns out, has been working on a project that makes heavy use of her translators’ lives, Alexis’s in particular. Here, the translator, normally an invisible figure who works behind the scenes, has become the subject of the author’s focus. The novel is a form that has long been fascinated by its own conventions, but these ideas are rarely explored within the context of translation. In The Extinction of Irena Rey , no role is fixed: Alexis goes from “U.S. usurper” to unwitting subject, from interpreter to muse. By using Alexis as a stand-in for the English language, Croft has constructed a canny exploration of how even English, despite its unique dominance, might be influenced by its brushes with the mysterious process that is translation.

3. “How to Become a Writer” by Lorrie Moore

Told in the second person point of view , this story from Moore’s debut anthology Self-Help takes an honest look at the inner life of a struggling artist. Through the use of an unusual POV, the author manages to turn her reader into a confidante — making it abundantly clear that the ‘you’ the narrator is speaking about is actually herself.

This story is a standout, but the entire collection is well worth a read for its insight, humor, and disregard for literary norms.

4. “Cat Person” by Kristen Roupenian

In the Social Media Age, no short story has gone viral the way this New Yorker contribution from Roupenian has. Arriving at the height of #MeToo, it begins with 20-year-old Margot embarking on the early stages of flirtation with an older man, Robert. As she gets to know more about this man (as well as filling in the gaps with her imagination), the power dynamic in their relationship starts to fluctuate.

Lauded for its portrayal of Margot’s inner life and the fears many modern women face when it comes to dating, it also has its fair share of detractors — many are critical of the central character, some are downright outraged by the story’s success. Still, this story undeniably struck a chord with the reading public, and will likely remain relevant for some time.

5. “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver

First published in The Atlantic Monthly in 1981, “Cathedral” is today known as one of Raymond Carver’s finest works. When it opens, we meet a narrator whose wife is expecting a visit from an old friend, a blind man. Dissatisfied and distrusting of people not like him, our narrator struggles to connect until the blind man asks him to describe a cathedral to him. 

 “Cathedral” is one of Carver’s own personal favorites, and deservedly so. His characteristic minimalist style is devastating as the story builds up to a shattering moment of emotional truth — an ultimate reminder that no-one else can capture the quiet sadness of working-class people like him. 

6. “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor

Innocuously titled, “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is nevertheless Flannery O’Connor’s bleakest — and most famous — work. It begins unassumingly with a Southern family who’s planning to go on a road trip. Yet the journey is rudely interrupted when their car overturns on an abandoned dirt road — and they are met by an enigmatic group of three men, coming up over the far hill. 

This short story inspired some strong reactions from the public upon publication — and the conversation continues today as to its frank depiction of the nature of good and evil. Again, we won’t spoil anything for you, except to say that “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” is well worth your time. 

7. “Symbols and Signs” by Vladimir Nabokov

The famous author of Lolita wrote “Signs and Symbols” in 1948. Its premise is seemingly simple: an elderly couple visits their mentally ill son in the sanatorium in America. Yet their background and trials come into sharp focus as the story develops, until an explosive ending disrupts everyone’s peace of mind. 

As you might expect, the somber “Symbols and Signs” diverges sharply from Lolita in terms of both tone and subject — but its ending will keep you awake at night thinking about its implications.  

8. “Sticks” by George Saunders

Not so much a short story as it is flash fiction, “Sticks” is written from the perspective of a young man whose father has an unusual habit: dressing up a crucifix that’s built of out a metal pole in the yard. One of America’s greatest living short story writers, George Saunders explained: "For two years I'd been driving past a house like the one in the story, imagining the owner as a man more joyful and self-possessed and less self-conscious than myself. Then one day I got sick of him and invented his opposite, and there was the story." 

The result is a masterful piece of fiction that builds something out of seemingly nothing — all in the space of only two paragraphs. 

9. “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury

If there’s anyone who you can trust to deliver thought-provoking, terrifying science fiction on the regular, it’s Ray Bradbury. In “The Veldt,” George and Lydia Hadley have bought an automated house that comes with a “nursey,” or a virtual reality room. Worried about the nursery’s effect on the kids, George and Lydia think about turning off the nursey — but the problem is that their children are obsessed with it. 

As an ominously prescient prediction of the downside of technology, “The Veldt” is a short and shining example of how Ray Bradbury was an author before his time. 

10. “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes

In this classic short story, we are privy to the journals of Charlie Gordon, a cleaner with an IQ of 68. ("I reely wantd to lern I wantid it more even then pepul who are smarter even then me. All my life I wantid to be smart and not dumb.”) Charlie’s luck changes when he is selected for an experiment that purports to turn him into a genius — but everything that goes up must come down in the end. 

“Flowers for Algernon” won the Hugo Award in 1960 for its groundbreaking presentation. Heartbreaking and rich with subtle poignance, it is likely to remain a staple for centuries to come.

SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND , by Jennine Capó Crucet

OK, stop me if you’ve heard this one before: A young Pitbull impersonator in Miami named Ismael grows obsessed with a killer whale held in captivity named Lolita while he attempts to both remake himself in the image of “Tony Montana for the new millennium” and untangle the mystery of his mother’s death more than a decade ago.

So goes the plot of Jennine Capó Crucet’s fourth book, “Say Hello to My Little Friend,” an impossible-to-define but highly digestible novel about Cuban heritage, migration, motherhood and the heartbreaking way young men float through life lost and desperate for meaning.

Izzy, who’s 20, was born in Cuba but has spent most of his life in Miami, where he was raised by his mother’s half sister. He recalls only fragments of how he arrived stateside on a raft when he was 7. To earn “easy extra money,” he works as an unauthorized Pitbull impersonator, but when he receives a cease-and-desist letter from the rapper, he pivots and fixates on becoming as rich and powerful as “Miami’s modern-day Scarface.” In an effort to find his own exotic animal like Montana’s signature tiger, he heads to Miami’s Seaquarium, where he sees Lolita and forms a psychic connection with her: He remembers meeting the orca in her enclosure years earlier, during a field trip when he first moved to the United States. She recognizes in him someone who is also lost.

Both are trapped in their own ways. Izzy wants to know if his mother loved him, and why she brought him to the United States in the first place. But those questions create a pen of their own; like Lolita, he seems to swim in circles, hoping for something to set him free. Together their parallel stories shape a commentary about what happens to us when we’re stuck in cages we were never designed for in the first place.

While Izzy is busy with things like courting his friend’s young and tender sister to be the Michelle Pfeiffer to his Al Pacino, capturing swamp wildlife for cash and asking powerful Cuban families in Miami too many troublesome questions about his mother, Lolita floats aimlessly in her tank, considering killing her trainers but never doing it, and wondering where her mother is after all these years. It’s an unlikely achievement to make a killer whale’s longing for her parent relatable, and yet Lolita’s story will feel familiar to anyone who has ever gotten lost as a child and eked out a pitiful, “Mom?” in an attempt to get back home. There’s something undeniable about Crucet’s characters — they feel so real in how the deck remains stacked against them.

The novel could easily slip into a text too dark to enjoy — the loss of Izzy’s mother is a grim undercurrent throughout the novel, even in chapters all about Lolita. It’s a relief, then, that Crucet’s prose is so sprightly and joyful. For instance, in one chapter, the narrator wonders how Tony Montana could have possibly gotten the scar on his face from oral sex, assessing the plausibility of several different scenarios: “A shard of glass falls from a light fixture overhead (feasibility depends on position),” Crucet writes. The vagina “is possessed by a 17th-century fencing champion (magical realism, appropriated by a white person.)” It’s a relief to laugh before the heaviness of Izzy’s mother returns.

But, as with most stories about ourselves and where we come from, there’s nothing more important here than the mother — our starting point for love, for trauma, for yearning for home and our fear that once we’re gone from it we’ll never get back. What could an orca held in captivity and a boy on the cusp of manhood have in common? They just needed their mothers; don’t we all.

Five years after Luke Perry’s death, a new look at the Gen X bad boy

Margaret wappler’s ‘a good bad boy’ looks back on a life that was both extraordinary and, for a celebrity, remarkably uneventful.

Long before Taylor Swift may or may not have folded herself into a suitcase to avoid the paparazzi, Luke Perry hid in a laundry hamper to avoid a frenzied mob of teenage girls in a mall department store in Bellevue, Wash.

In May 1991, in what came to be known as the Bon Marché incident, a publicity appearance by Perry, star of the hit Fox show “Beverly Hills, 90210,” went sideways, writes pop culture journalist Margaret Wappler in her hybrid biography-memoir, “ A Good Bad Boy: Luke Perry and How a Generation Grew Up .” The crowd swelled to 20,000, by some estimations, and quickly spiraled out of control. Several fans were injured, and the junior section had to be evacuated.

When a similar incident happened later in Florida, Perry apologized (“I want all those people out there to know that it wasn’t my fault, for one”) and phoned most of the injured young fans in the hospital, because that was the sort of thing Luke Perry did.

It is impossible to overstate the influence of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” watched by 20 percent of American teenagers during its early-’90s peak. A soapy, supremely watchable drama about teens at the fictional West Beverly Hills High that was unafraid to tackle then-third-rail issues like teen sex, eating disorders and sexual assault, it belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Gen X culture alongside Nirvana and John Hughes.

Perry, who played brooding, attractively damaged Dylan McKay , complete with a Porsche and a decidedly un-’90s pompadour, was the show’s breakout star, a phenom among phenoms, as much of an icon of his time as Leo DiCaprio or Harry Styles.

Like everyone else in the show’s core cast, Perry (23 when the show first aired in 1990) was a 20-something who looked like a 30-something playing a teenager. His sideburns and famous “corrugated forehead wrinkles” heightened the effect.

Out of two unrelatable archetypes — rich guy and James Dean-like rebel — Perry fashioned a solemn, soulful character somewhere between a hero and an antihero, “the platonic ideal of the sensitive man hiding his wounds behind a shield of cool,” writes Wappler.

“A Good Bad Boy,” its release tied to the fifth anniversary of Perry’s death from a stroke at 52 , chronicles Perry’s small-town Ohio childhood; his struggling-actor era, when he toggled between roles on soaps like “Loving” and manual-labor jobs; his vertiginous rise to teen idol-dom; and its bruising aftermath. His “90210” audition went badly, a former girlfriend of his recalls to Wappler. Perry was in the car to the airport headed back home, possibly done with acting for good, when the call came that he had landed the part.

Luke Perry came full circle, from heartthrob rebel to sensitive dad

Although no one in Perry’s immediate family would consent to be interviewed for the book, nor would any of his “90210” co-stars, “A Good Bad Boy” doesn’t necessarily suffer for it. Wappler relies on existing interviews with Perry and firsthand accounts from old friends, roommates, ex-lovers and co-workers.

According to those interviewed, Perry was a doting father to two children and a potbellied pig named Jerry Lee. He was a gentle lover and a good listener who never lost his Midwestern humility. His presence helped bring close friend and former co-star Jason Priestley out of his coma after a car crash . He punched Tori Spelling’s bad-news boyfriend in the face at the annual Spelling Christmas Eve party, much to the delight of his castmates. He was a doer of good deeds who spent time with dying fans and unhoused people. He could calm strangers’ crying babies. “He seemed pure,” writes Wappler. His fellow actors adored him. “He was somebody who I could look to as an oracle,” claimed his “ Riverdale ” co-star Madelaine Petsch.

Perry left “90210” after Season 6 and struggled to avoid typecasting (“I’m going to be this guy forever,” Perry once correctly predicted). He landed recurring roles on “Oz” and “Riverdale,” and, in one of his last performances, played a television cowboy in “ Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ” for Quentin Tarantino, who was a fan.

The book’s portrayal of Perry can veer dangerously close to cardboard sainthood. Wappler does her best, despite being robbed of a biographer’s most useful tools: Perry’s life was both extraordinary and, for a celebrity, remarkably uneventful, light on madness, scandal, substance abuse or famous love affairs, though he did briefly date Yasmine Bleeth.

“A Good Bad Boy” knits together intimate reminiscences from Wappler’s own difficult adolescence, young adulthood and marriage with an unavoidably more distant recounting of Perry’s life. The biography and autobiography are told in alternating chapters, which makes it difficult to get any narrative momentum going. As a memoir, it’s raw and frequently moving. As a Luke Perry primer, it’s not definitive, but it’s as empathetic as you’re likely to find, a moving meditation on his life and the still-unthinkable strangeness of his absence.

The 10 Best Book Reviews of 2022

Merve emre on gerald murnane, casey cep on harry crews, maggie doherty on cormac mccarthy, and more.

Way back in the mid-aughts when I first started writing about books, pitching a print publication was the only reliable way for book critics to get paid, and third-person point of view was all the vogue. Much has changed in the years since: Newspaper and magazine book sections have shuttered, many digital outlets offer compensation when they can, and first-person criticism has become much more pervasive.

I don’t celebrate all these changes, but I’m certain of one thing in particular: I love book reviews and critical essays written in the first-person. Done well, they are generous invitations into the lives of critics—and into their memory palaces. With that in mind, most of my picks for the best book reviews of 2022 were written in the first person this year.

Chess Story

Adam Dalva on Stefan Zweig’s Chess Story , translated by Joel Rotenberg ( Los Angeles Review of Books )

Dalva’s review of Chess Story is a great example of the power of a first-person point of view—he doesn’t just examine the book, he narrates his own journey to understand it.

“In my own quest to understand Chess Story, I gradually realized that I would have to learn the game it centers on. And that has led me into a second obsession, much more problematic: I have fallen passionately in love with online bullet chess.”

Merve Emre on Gerald Murnane’s Last Letter to a Reader ( The New Yorker )

Merve Emre’s analysis of Gerald Murnane’s final book is a beautiful piece of writing. I love how she opens on a note of suspense, pulling you into a story you can’t stop reading.

“On most evenings this past spring, the man who lives across the street sat at his small desk, turned on the lamp, and began to write as the light faded. The white curtains in his room were seldom drawn. From where I sat, I had a clear view of him, and he, were he to look up from his writing, would have had a clear view of a house across the street, where a woman with dark hair and a faintly olive complexion was seated by a window, watching him write. At the moment he glanced up from his page, the woman supposed him to be contemplating the look, or perhaps the sound, of the sentence he had just written. The sentence was this: ‘Since then I have tried to avoid those rooms that grow steadily more crowded with works to explain away Time.’”

Nuclear Family Joseph Han

Minyoung Lee on Joseph Han’s Nuclear Family ( Chicago Review of Books )

Lee brings her own experience to bear in this insightful review of a novel about Korean Americans in the diaspora. (Disclosure: I founded the Chicago Review of Books in 2016, but stepped back from an editorial role in 2019.)

“In diaspora communities, it’s not uncommon to find cultural practices from the homeland, even after they’ve become unpopular or forgotten there. This is colloquially referred to as ‘the immigrant time capsule effect.’ It can be experienced in many of the ethnic enclaves in the U.S. My first impression of Los Angeles’ Koreatown when I visited in the 2010s, for example, was that it felt very much like Seoul in the 1980s. Grocery stores were even selling canned grape drinks that were popular when I was a child but that I haven’t seen since.”

Chelsea Leu on Thuận’s Chinatown , translated by Nguyen An Lý ( Astra )

Astra magazine’s “ bangers only ” editorial policy led to some spectacular reviews, like this Chelsea Leu number that opens with a fascinating linguistics lesson.

“It was in high school Latin that I learned that language could have moods, and that one of those moods was the subjunctive. We use the indicative mood for statements of fact, but the subjunctive (which barely exists in English anymore) expresses possibilities, wishes, hopes and fears: ‘I wouldn’t trust those Greeks bearing gifts if I were you.’ More recently, I’ve learned there exists a whole class of moods called irrealis moods, of which the subjunctive is merely one flavor. André Aciman’s recent essay collection, Homo Irrealis, is entirely dedicated to these moods, celebrating the fact that they express sentiments that fly in the face of settled reality.”

Casey Cep on Harry Crews’ A Childhood: The Biography of a Place ( The New Yorker )

Cep is a magician when it comes to capturing a sense of place, as evidenced by her book about Harper Lee, Furious Hours , and this review of a book about another Southern writer, Harry Crews.

“Dehairing a shoat is the sort of thing Crews knew all about, along with cooking possum, cleaning a rooster’s craw, making moonshine, trapping birds, tanning hides, and getting rid of screwworms. Although he lived until 2012, Crews and his books—sixteen novels, two essay collections, and a memoir—recall a bygone era. The best of what he wrote evokes W.P.A. guides or Foxfire books, full of gripping folklore and hardscrabble lives, stories from the back of beyond about a time when the world seemed black and white in all possible senses.”

Best Barbarian Roger Reeves

Victoria Chang and Dean Rader on Roger Reeves’ Best Barbarian ( Los Angeles Review of Books )

Last year I professed my love for “reviews in dialogue” between two critics, and Chang and Rader continue to be masters of the form in this conversation about Roger Reeves’ second poetry collection.

“Victoria: Do you have thoughts on the flow of the poems or allusions? I have a feeling you will talk about the biblical references. But I’m most curious to hear what you have to say about the purpose of the allusions and references. Is the speaker agreeing with them, subverting them, both? Is the speaker using them as a way to press against or think against, or toward? I know you will say something smart and insightful.”

“Dean: That is a lot of pressure. I’ll try not to let you down.”

The Passenger Sella Maris

Maggie Doherty on Cormac McCarthy’s The Passenger and Stella Maris ( The New Republic )

I didn’t think anyone could persuade me to read another Cormac McCarthy novel after The Road, but Maggie Doherty makes every book sound fascinating by making it part of a bigger, true story.

“Such is the paradox of The Passenger , a novel at once highly attuned to the pleasures of collective life and resistant to the very idea of it. Unlike the violent, stylized books for which McCarthy is best known, this new novel is loose, warm, colloquial. It explores the sustaining, if impermanent, bonds formed among male friends. It’s full of theories and anecdotes, memories and stories, all voiced by some of the liveliest characters McCarthy has ever crafted. The Passenger is McCarthy’s first novel in over 15 years; its coda, S tella Maris , is published in December. Together, the books represent a new, perhaps final direction for McCarthy. The Passenger in particular is McCarthy’s most peopled novel, his most polyphonic—and it’s wonderfully entertaining, in a way that few of his previous books have been. It is also his loneliest novel yet.”

Allison Bulger on Vladimir Sorokin’s Telluria , translated by Max Lawton ( Words Without Borders )

I’m always interested in how critics find new ways to start a review, and Bulger’s opening lines here are a particularly sharp hook.

“Of all the jobs esteemed translator Larissa Volokhonsky has rejected, only one text was physically removed from her apartment on the Villa Poirier in Paris.

‘Take it back,’ she said. ‘Rid me of its presence.’

“The cursed title was Blue Lard (1999) by Vladimir Sorokin, known to some as Russia’s De Sade, and Volokhonsky’s revulsion was par for the course. It would be twenty years before another translator, Max Lawton, would provide eight Sorokin works unseen in the West, including Blue Lard , in which a clone of Khrushchev sodomizes a clone of Stalin.”

Summer Farah on Solmaz Sharif’s Customs ( Cleveland Review of Books )

Farah’s nuanced review of Solmaz Sharif’s new poetry collection further illustrates the potency of a first-person voice.

“Our poets write of our martyrs and resist alongside them; sometimes, I wonder, what life will be like after we are free, and what a truly free Palestine looks like. Last spring, the hashtag “#غرد_كأنها_حرة” circulated on Twitter, a collection of Palestinians imagining life as if our land was free; people imagined themselves moving from Akka to Ramallah with ease, returning to their homes their grandparents left in 1948, and traveling across the Levant without the obstacle of borders. This stanza acknowledges there is more work to be done than just ridding ourselves of the obvious systems that oppress us; decolonization and anti-imperial work are more holistic than we know. Sharif’s work is about attunement to the ways imperialism is ingrained into our lives, our speech, our poetry; this moment is direct in that acknowledgement.”

Nicole LeFebvre on Dorthe Nors’ A Line in the World ( On the Seawall )

LeFebvre opens this review like she’s writing a memoir or a personal essay—an unexpected joy that would be very hard to do in third-person.

“Each morning when I wake up, I hear the gentle crash and lull of waves on a beach. ‘Gather, scatter,’ as Dorthe Nors describes the sound. My eyes open and blink, adjusting to the dark. The sun’s not up yet. I scoot back into my partner’s body, kept asleep by the rhythmic thrum of the white noise machine, which covers the cars idling in the 7-Eleven parking lot, the motorcyclists showing off their scary-high speeds. For a few minutes, I accept the illusion of a calmer, quiet life. ‘Gather, scatter.’ A life by the sea.”
