Drawing an array to multiply
Students solve multiplication questions by drawing an array of boxes . In the first worksheet, all questions are "doubles" (2x2, 3x3, etc) so the arrays will be square. The other worksheets have general single digit multiplication questions.

What are arrays?
Arrays are a pictorial representation to help children understand times tables . For example, a child may be given the following word problem:
I have 3 bags. There are 5 pennies in each bag. How many pennies do I have altogether?
The teacher might then explain that rather than counting all the pennies individually, you could work out the answer by counting each line in 5s. The teacher could then point to each line and count 5, 10, 15 to show the children that there were 15 pennies in all.
Teachers in Key Stage 1 will teach children how to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and make sure they are very confident in this, before going on to show them how to work out times table problems like this one using arrays.
This is because children need to be able to count up in steps of different numbers before they can use arrays to help them.
In Year 3, children are expected to learn their 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Teachers may still use arrays for children struggling with their times tables at this stage. Many children find a pictorial representation helps them enormously with working out a worded problem.

Multiplication Maths Worksheets for Year 3 (age 7-8)
More practice with doubling numbers and using arrays to understand multiplication, but it is now down to the serious task of learning ‘tables', especially the 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x tables. Once these have been learned children can move on to mentally multiplying larger numbers by 4, 5 and 10.
Revise multiplication skills
Confidence building with tables learned in Year 2.
Match equal groups represented in different ways.
Visual help to describe multiplication.
A great way to show how multiplication works is by using arrays. 3 rows of 4 means 3 lots of 4. This means 4 x 3 or 3 x 4.
Progressively harder doubling and halving; from teens, to 2-digit multiples of 5 to 3-digit multiples of 10.
Doubling is coming up again. This time it's all multiples of 5. (Just remember that double 5 is 10.)
This is where we make real headway with learning the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. Make sure they are recited as a whole and not just saying the answers (which is just counting up).
A quick check to see how well these tables have been mastered.
Working with multiples of 10
Using knowledge of multiples of ten.
Today we are going to look at multiples of 10. We will represent tens with packets of crayons.
Today we are looking at how counting in threes can help us count in thirties.
Knowing your 2x, 5x and 10x tables can really help with other calculations.
Multiplying by ten is easy if you know what you are doing; each digit moves one place to the left. Avoid saying ?add a nought?.
More multiplying by 10 and 100. Probably one of our easier sets of pages.
Multiplying whole tens by 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10. Excellent for putting knowledge of tables into practice.

One such relationship, the inverse relationship between division and multiplication, can be effectively illustrated using arrays. For example; 3×5=15 or 3 rows of 5 make 15, can be represented by the following array. Looking at the array differently reveals the inverse, that is. 15÷3=5 or 15 put into 3 rows makes 5 columns - or 5 in each row.
