Open Access in Humanities Publishing: A Discussion with Irene Van Rossom of Amsterdam UP

Irene Van Rossom and Avi do a deep dive into how Open Access works (or doesn't work) in the context for book manuscripts in the Humanities. Listeners will get a better understanding of transformative agreements and why different countries have entirely different perspectives on the importance and primacy of Open Access. Irene also discusses important and creative OA initiatives such as 'Path to Open' which encourages libraries and publishers to work together to ensure that everyone can access research. Finally, we will discuss why metadata has become so critical and how authors can work with publishers to ensure maximum exposure for their research. Ulrike Krause, "Difficult Life in a Refugee Camp: Gender, Violence, and Coping in Uganda" (Cambridge UP, 2021)

Although refugee camps are established to accommodate, protect, and assist those fleeing from violent conflict and persecution, life often remains difficult there. Building on empirical research with refugees in a Ugandan camp, Ulrike Krause offers nuanced insights into violence, humanitarian protection, gender relations, and coping of refugees who mainly escaped the conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  Difficult Life in a Refugee Camp: Gender, Violence, and Coping in Uganda explores how risks of gender-based violence against women, in particular, but also against men, persist despite and partly due to their settlement in the camp and the system established there. It reflects on modes and shortcomings of humanitarian protection, changes in gender relations, as well as strategies that the women and men use to cope with insecurities, everyday struggles, and structural problems occurring across different levels and temporalities. Ulrike Krause is Junior Professor of Forced Migration and Refugee Studies at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies and the Institute for Social Sciences, Osnabrück University, Germany, and affiliated Research Associate at the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on the gender, forced migration and conflict, including gender-based violence, humanitarian refugee protection, policy and norms, as well as displaced people’s agency and resilience. Lamis Abdelaaty is an associate professor of political science at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. She is the author of Discrimination and Delegation: Explaining State Responses to Refugees (Oxford University Press, 2021). Email her comments at [email protected] or tweet to @LAbdelaaty. Ben Dodds, "Myths and Memories of the Black Death" (Palgrave MacMillan, 2022)

Ben Dodds, of the University of Florida, talks with Jana Byars about his new book, Myths and Memories of the Black Death (Palgrave, 2022). This book explores modern representations of the Black Death, a medieval pandemic. The concept of cultural memory is used to examine the ways in which journalists, writers of fiction, scholars and others referred to, described and explained the Black Death from around 1800 onwards. The distant medieval past was often used to make sense of aspects of the present, from the cholera pandemics of the nineteenth-century to the climate crisis of the early twenty-first century. A series of overlapping myths related to the Black Death emerged based only in part on historical evidence. Cultural memory circulates in a variety of media from the scholarly article to the video game and online video clip, and the connections and differences between mediated representations of the Black Death are considered. The Black Death is one of the most well-known aspects of the medieval world, and this study of its associated memories and myths reveals the depth and complexity of interactions between the distant and recent past. Clare Griffin, "Mixing Medicines: The Global Drug Trade and Early Modern Russia" (McGill-Queen's UP, 2022)

Clare Griffin's book Mixing Medicines: The Global Drug Trade and Early Modern Russia (McGill-Queen's UP, 2022) introduces the reader to the dynamic and complex world of early modern Russian medical drugs, from the enthusiasm for newly imported American botanicals to the disgust at Western European medicines made from human corpses. Based on a unique set of previously unused sources, this book is the first study of how the Russian Empire took part in the early modern global trade in medical drugs. The extensive and detailed records kept by the Moscow court show how ingredients produced elsewhere and passed through the massive, long-distance trade network of the early modern world were finally consumed. Looking at medicine as materia medica gives us a different perspective than when looking at practitioners, texts, and ideas. Erika Monahan is the author of The Merchants of Siberia: Trade in Early Modern Eurasia (Cornell UP, 2016) and a 2023-2024 Alexander von Humboldt Fellow Learn more about your ad choices. Radio Broadcasting Along Mexico's Northern Border, 1930-1950

Sonia Robles, an assistant professor of history at the University of Delaware, talks about her book, Mexican Waves: Radio Broadcasting Along Mexico’s Northern Border, 1930-1950 (University of Arizona Press, 2019), with Peoples & Things host, Lee Vinsel. Mexican Waves tells the fascinating history of radio stations entrepreneurs set up along the Mexican side of the Mexico-USA border, primarily to reach laborers working in the United States. Robles covers fascinating dimensions of the radio broadcasting industry, including advertisements that played over the airwaves, how regulation shaped the behavior of radio station owners, and how radio fit into the lives of touring performers. Robles and Vinsel also discuss recent efforts of historians to capture the history of local radio stations throughout North America. Lee Vinsel is an associate professor in the Department of Science, Technology and Society at Virginia Tech. He studies human life with technology, with particular focus on the relationship between government, business, and technological change. His first book, Moving Violations: Automobiles, Experts, and Regulations in the United States, was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in July 2019. Learn more about your ad choices. This pod has really varied and interesting content but

There’s a couple weird glitches where every day or so a whole bunch of recent episodes disappear and they are replaced with what seems like another library of recent shows. So I only have time to listen to a couple here and there but when I go to find them they may or may not be there. Also I do miss some of the very obscure reaches that were here some years ago.

Everything Subject Under The Sun. And The Sun.

A collection of all the network's other channels, everything from neuroscience to history to religion. The result is a firehose of interviews with researchers, academics, authors, and others who talk about their latest publication or project in detail. The publications range from high-level academic minutiae to work oriented towards the general public. Any inquisitive listener is guaranteed to come across something fascinating and possibly wind up going bankrupt buying books. The podcast updates in chunks but averages around an episode a day.

Great way to keep up with new books, naturally

I love this podcast and am very grateful for it. I have purchased so many books I have learned about through this podcast. I was thinking the other day as I went to purchase a book I learned about here that there should be a code we can type as opposed to having to click through the links or whatever in order to give credit where credit is due. Because if I scroll through my podcasts, see a title of a book on the podcast app, I click right over to amazon and put that book in the cart or buy it now, etc. I figured I would mention it if it was in fact important, maybe it isn’t and at this point the NBN is aware of how much they impact sales based on the correlation of when the post is made and when the books are purchased. On another note, I do get the distinct impression that sometimes the interviewer has not read the book at all and when this happens it is quite obvious for the audience and the author. I think authors of academic books maybe just go with the flow because they are obligated by their big academic publishing house, first, and also would rather be in that type of interview than no type of interview. But in those cases, I think it would be better if the author was given the opportunity to do a presentation for an hour or so without the terrible questions with no follow up and the absolutely dreaded “I think it is so interesting that you [insert partial sentence from the second paragraph of the introduction]; will you elaborate more on that?” Incidentally, “interesting” is a concept for the crowd, not the critic. Big ups to Marshall Poe, though, that he remain touched by the light of Clio.
