When Was Texting Invented: The History of Texting

Information channels and communication technologies have evolved rapidly over the last several decades. Back when texting was invented, messaging capabilities were scarce. Today’s smartphones are equipped with technology and services that were only available using multiple devices when they first came out, including RCS, GSM, 3G, cross-network text messaging, bulk text messaging, and many others.
Texting on 1990s phones meant you had to put your thumbs to work on a tiny 10-number keypad (and no, predictive texting wasn’t a thing yet). SMS text messaging started replacing time-consuming phone calls with trillions of texts that instantly send relevant information to the right audience.
With today’s technology, you can start bulk text messaging with the touch of a button and use a dedicated communication channel like WhatsApp to send files of any type to the device of your choice. This type of technology has come such a long way that it’s worth taking a look back at the fascinating developments which shaped the history of texting.
We’ll be covering popular topics like “When was the first commercial text message sent?”, “When was texting created?” and “What did the first text message say?” in the following lines:
The history of text message communication
Let’s take a look at how texting started, who played a key role in texting history, and which devices marked its evolution.
The beginning of text messaging
1837 – 1844 – The electric telegraph was invented in 1837. It was the first device that could electronically send text-based messages from one location to another. The first telegram, sent by Samuel Morse ( inventor of the Morse Code), only traveled for two miles.
By 1844, Morse had set up the first long-distance telegraph system between Baltimore and Washington — a total distance of 44 miles. The first message sent using the system read, “WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT.” This is a direct Bible reference and a Book of Numbers quote, which translates to “What has God made?”, meant to point out the miraculous nature of technological progress.

Radio communication followed shortly after, with the invention of radiotelegraphy or wireless telegraphy. Guglielmo Marconi invented the first radio transmitters/receivers between 1894 and 1895, which paved the way to the development of radiotelephony. At the beginning of 1908, transoceanic stations exchanged telegrams of up to 200 words per minute.
The first messaging network
1933 – The German Reichspost (postal service) unveiled the Telex service to overcome the shortcomings of telegraphs. Telex was a public network of teleprinters that was very similar to today’s telephone networks.
1971 – The University of Hawaii used ALOHAnet to send ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio waves carrying text message data. This technology eventually gave way to today’s wireless networks.
When and how was texting invented?
1984 – Text messaging started with Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert. The first SMS messages were limited to 160 seven-bit characters so they could fit onto existing signaling formats.
A fun fact about the history of texting – Hillebrand argued that while 160 characters don’t sound like a lot, that’s actually more than enough characters to convey most messages. He sat at a typewriter and typed out random sentences, counting every letter, number, punctuation, and space to reach this conclusion. Almost every time, his random musings fell within the 160-character limit.
Who invented texting?
Hillebrand and Ghillebaert are credited with coming up with the SMS ( Short Message Service ) concept. The SMS invention is attributed by some to Finnish engineer Matti Makkonen the “ Father of SMS ”, for his work at Nokia — though he doesn’t consider himself the inventor of texting due to the large number of engineers involved.
What is SMS?
The term SMS stands for “Short Message Service”. “SMS messaging” and “text messaging” are typically used interchangeably. Originally, SMS messages only contained text; however, SMS messages can now also include multimedia messages (known as MMS) that feature images, GIFs, videos, sound clips, and emojis.
When did texting start?
1992 – The first text message was sent to a cell phone by 22-year-old engineer Neil Papworth. The recipient was Richard Jarvis, who was attending a Christmas party near Vodafone headquarters in Newbury, England. This is when texting as we know it was invented. What did the first text message say? The text was a heartwarming message that simply read “Merry Christmas”.
1993 – A year later, Brennan Hayden, an engineer for Irish wireless company Aldiscon, sent the first commercial text message. It said “burp,” which had nothing to do with gastroenterology but instead signified the “birth” of a new form of communication in the history of texting.
Which was the first texting phone?
The 1993 cell phone released by Nokia was the first phone that could text.

1995 – Autofill was a key development in the history of texting as well — it opened the door to faster texting. The first autofill technology was called “T9”. This technology made it quite a bit easier to send text messages using a 10-digit keypad.
1997 – Nokia release the first cell phone featuring a QWERTY keyboard: the Nokia 9000i Communicator.

Source: Nokia 9000 Communicator (left) and Nokia E7 Communicator / Wikipedia
The 9000 had what would be considered a large keyboard for a cell phone, but a small keyboard compared to today’s tablets.
When did texting become popular?
1999 – Another important milestone in the history of texting was the introduction of cross-network texts. Before 1999, you could only message people who shared the same service provider.
2000 – Texting becomes mainstream, with message volumes reaching an average of 35 texts per person per month in the U.S. Texting was especially popular among college students prompting The Wall Street Journal to call texting “a new fever”.
2001 – Texting popularity takes off, as many companies turn to SMS as a primary marketing tool. In light of this new market development, TextMagic was founded and began helping businesses improve communications and mobile marketing ever since.
2002 – Text messaging becomes a global phenomenon reaching 250 billion messages sent worldwide in a single year.
How did text messaging evolve?
2003 – SMS messaging found a new purpose when the TV show American Idol pioneered “text to vote”. Viewers could choose their favorite singer by texting their vote to a number displayed on-screen.
2006 – Twitter is born. The network’s famous 140-character limit was inspired by Hillebrand, who invented SMS messaging in 1984 (see above). When you add the 20-character limit on Twitter usernames to the 140-character tweet limit, you get 160 characters, which was the original character limit for text messages.
2007 – Texting becomes the most popular mobile data service worldwide, used by 2.4 billion out of 3.3 billion mobile phone users. The number of texts sent surpassed the number of calls made for the first time. Apple released the first iPhone the same year.
2008 – The United Way launched the first “text to donate” campaign, which was featured during Superbowl XLII. In the same year, Obama famously used a ‘text to donate campaign’ to help him win the election. He also used SMS software to send bulk text messages and grow his grassroots campaign.
Texting in the modern era
2010 – At this point in time, text messaging was a mainstream practice in many cultures. In fact, the verb “texting” was added to the dictionary in 2010 – no surprise given that the number of text messages sent worldwide reached 6.1 trillion that year (roughly 1,000 messages per person)!
2013 – Internet-based mobile messaging services like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, iMessage, and Viber caught up with SMS messaging in terms of overall popularity and message volume.
2019 – While mobile messaging apps continue to grow in popularity, they have not extinguished SMS messaging, which is still a growing market. For example, the market for enterprise SMS is rapidly increasing as companies continue to look to this communication channel as a new way to connect with customers.
The future of SMS – Businesses will increasingly use SMS software to interact with customers. SMS messages are already used to ask for feedback, send parcel delivery notifications, carry out security authorizations, confirm appointments, and so much more. These business-to-consumer text messages are often called “SMS notifications” and are usually sent to announce special events or in response to transactions.

Public institutions are also increasingly turning to SMS notifications as a way to send important public safety information or alerts.
Interested in text marketing?
Marketing via text has many advantages over email marketing. For one, text notifications have much higher open and response rates (8x higher compared to email). Also, customers don’t have to install any new apps to receive text notifications — every smartphone is equipped to send and receive text messages right out of the box.

How to Get Text Message History From Phone
Getting a text message history on your cell phone is easy. There are basically two ways you can look back at your history. The first way is to look in your cell phone messaging inbox and outbox. Unless you erase a message, your phone keeps track of all your text messages. The other way to see your text message history is to log in to your online account on your cell phone provider's website. Some providers may not give you the text message, but they do provide both the sent and received phone numbers for each text.

Look for the menu icon on your cell phone screen. If you have your phone set to a list setting, you may not see icons. Instead you will see the word "Menu" somewhere on your cell phone's screen.
Video of the Day
Go into the menu section of your cell phone. This should pull up either more icons or a list of items found in your cell phone menu.
Look for the icon and word "Messaging" within your menu. Click into this area on your cell phone. This is where you will find your text message history.
Look for the words "Inbox" and "Outbox" or "Sent" and "Received" in your Messaging section.
Click on "Inbox" or "Received" to see a list of all text messages you have received. Click on "Outbox" or "Sent" to see a list of all text messages you have sent.
Online Account
Log-in to your account via your cell phone provider's website. If your cell phone provider is Verizon Wireless, then visit www.verizonwireless.com and look for "create an account" to set up an account if you do not already have an online account.
Look for a tab or section that is labeled "messaging" once you have successfully logged into your account. You will have to enter a username and password to gain access into your account.
Click on the "messaging" tab and it will bring up your text messages. Verizon lists the numbers for each text message, sent and received. Other providers may provide the content of the text messages.

A Brief History of Text Messaging
by Mobivity
Sep 27, 2012
Can you imagine where your life would be without text messaging? Without being able to send a quick note that you’re going to be late going home, or coordinate a meeting with coworkers or friends on the go without ever making a phone call. It’s allowed us to be more efficient, independent, and direct in our interactions with each other. Among all of the short and simple methods of communication available, what lead us to the point we’re at where literally trillions of texts are sent every day (and yes, we mean it when we say literally )?
Texting, or SMS (short message service) is a method of communication that sends messages between cellphones (SMS or SMPP) — or from a PC or handheld to a cell phone (SMTP). The “short” part comes from the maximum size of a text message, which is 160 characters (letters, numbers or symbols in the Latin alphabet) regardless of phone, provider, or technology.
The SMS concept was first developed in the Franco-German GSM cooperation in 1984 by Friedhelm Hillebrand and Bernard Ghillebaert. The first text message was sent years later on December 3rd, 1992 from Neil Papworth, a former developer at Sema Group Telecoms. Mobile phones didn’t have keyboards at the time, so Papworth had to type the message on a PC. Papworth’s text — “Merry Christmas” — was successfully sent to Richard Jarvis at Vodafone.
Most early GSM mobile phone handsets did not support the ability to send text messages. The first SMS gateways for cellphones were network notifications, usually to inform of voice mail messages and billing alerts. Nokia was the first handset manufacturer whose total GSM phone line in 1993 supported user-sending of SMS text messages. In 1997, it became the first manufacturer to produce a mobile phone with a full keyboard: the Nokia 9000i Communicator.
Like any new technology, initial growth for SMS was slow. The average American user sent 0.4 texts per month in 1995. Gradually, phones and networks adapted to better accommodate SMS. In 1999, texts could finally be exchanged between different networks, which increased its usefulness. By 2000, the average number of text messages sent in the U.S. increased to 35 a month per person.
The first, most common method of commercial texting is referred to as “multi-tap.” Each number on the phone is connected to three or four letters. For example, the “3″ key displays “D,” “E” and “F.” Multi-tap is easy to understand, but not very efficient. In the 1990s, Tegic co-founder Cliff Kushler invented T9, short for “Text on 9 keys.” Instead of multi-tapping, predictive text technology displays words from a single keypress. As T9 became familiar with the words and phrases commonly used by the texter, they become correspondent in order of frequency. In 2011, Kushler invented Swype, a texting feature for touchscreens that enables users to drag their fingers to connect the dots between letters in a word.
Virtual keyboards had automatic spell check and correction, predictive text technology, and the ability to learn new words. The keys were larger and keyboard adapts to the phone’s width based on landscape or vertical orientation. Today, virtual keyboards have become a standard feature for smartphones. 2007 also happened to mark the first year that Americans sent and received more text messages per month than phone calls. Social media sites like Twitter adopted the short character format, which has likely helped the text message phenomenon — we’ve learned to be more concise and character-conscious.
Today, SMS is the most widely-used data application in the world , with 81% of mobile phone subscribers using it. And SMS has become more than just a way to text with friends — it also lets us receive updates and alerts, keep track of our finances, send email, and much more.
“The popularity and wide usage rates of text messaging are exactly what make it the ideal form of communication between brands and consumers.”
With new technology and communication mediums popping up almost every day, there will be more choices as far as how brands communicate with their customers. Whether you prefer Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, Yellow Pages, or Mobile Marketing , there is one thing to always keep in mind. For each new technology presented to consumers, there will be early adopters and people who will never adopt a new technology at all and rarely leave the level of technology they are currently at (Seriously – Blackberry and RIM are still making phones). This is why, when trying to reach your customers, it is the best decision to use a communication channel that is the most widely used application in the world – text messaging.

How to backup and restore text messages on Android
Keep your texts protected with our guide on how to backup and restore text messages on Android

Want to know how to backup and restore text messages on Android? Be warned that this is one area in which Google’s built-in backup mechanisms don’t quite cut it: you can save a copy of all your SMS messages to Google Drive (along with you app data, call history and contacts), but it doesn’t cover MMS messages by default and backups are only saved for 57 days. Google could improve this over time, as it has done with other Android Messages features .
But for now fully backing up your Android text messages therefore requires the use of a third-party app. In this guide, we’ll show you how to use it, so that you can both backup your text messages and restore them with ease.
- Read our guide on how to transfer contacts and data from Android to iPhone

You’ll need to use SMS Backup & Restore (opens in new tab) to fully protect your text messages on Android. There’s a free, ad-supported version that will do everything you need, or you can pay $4.49 for SMS Backup & Restore Pro (opens in new tab) to get rid of ads.
We’d also suggest having a Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive account ready, so that you can save your backup to a cloud storage service and restore it from there. This will keep your backup safer than if you were saving it on your Android device itself. One you’re ready, follow the steps below.
1. Install SMS Backup & Restore from the Play Store.
2. Open the app and tap “Get Started.” Allow all permission requests , then tap “Set up a backup.”
3. Make sure “Messages” is checked. Uncheck “Call logs,” unless you want to back those up at the same time. Tap “Next.”
4. Choose where to store your messages and tap "Next." We recommend you select a cloud storage option like Google Drive; while you can save the backup locally on your device, you’ll lose it if your phone breaks, just as you’d lose the messages themselves. If you select a cloud service, log in and tap “Allow” when SMS Backup & Restore asks for access.
5. Choose a file to store your backup. The app should default to a usable folder, such as “ My Drive ” if you’re using Google Drive. If you want to change the location, tap on the default folder name , then tap on the three-dot symbol in the top-right corner. Tap “Create folder,” name it, tap “OK” and finally tap “Use this folder” at the bottom.
6. Tap “Save,” followed by “Next.” Optionally, you can schedule automatic recurring backups, but if you don’t want to then deselect “Schedule recurring backups” and tap “ Back up now .”
7. Wait for your backup to complete. Now, it’s available to restore. If you’re restoring a backup to a brand new phone, install SMS Backup & Restore and open it on the new device.
8. To restore a backup, tap the three-line icon in the top-left of the app, then tap “Restore.”
9. Select the location your backup is saved in. The app should detect your most recent backup and have it auto-selected on the next screen.
10. Tap “Restore.” You may be asked to switch the default SMS app; if so, tap “OK,” then select SMS Backup & Restore and tap “Set as default.” You can always change this back later in Android settings.
11. Wait for your backup to restore, then tap “Close.”

- Android: You might be able to use a third-party app like SMS Backup & Restore to recover deleted text messages.
This article explains how to recover deleted text messages on iPhones with iOS 16, iOS 10 through 15, and Android 2.3 or later.
How to Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone With iOS 16
Beginning with iOS 16 , Apple added several enhancements to its Messages app, including the ability to recover deleted text messages directly from the Messages app. Here's how:
Open the Messages app.
In the upper-left corner, tap Edit .
Select Show Recently Deleted .
Tap the message or messages you want to recover.
In the lower-right corner, select Recover .
Tap Recover Message , or Recover Messages if you are recovering multiple messages.
Deleted text messages in iOS 16 are available for recovery in the Message app for only 30 days.
How to Recover Text Messages for iPhone Using iCloud
The process involves restoring your device with data from a recent iCloud backup. Any messages that were present on your phone at the time of the backup are retrievable.
Be aware that your phone might not be backing up to iCloud and even if it is, it might not be backing up information from the Messages app. Before following the steps below, you might need to back up your text messages .
Only data and messages present on your device at the time the backup occurred appear on your iPhone after the restoration process finishes.
Go to Settings > General . Then, scroll down and tap Reset .
This method is not for the faint of heart. You delete the data currently stored on your iPhone and then restore your iPhone with the data from a recent backup. Any new messages or other content that happened after the last backup is lost.
Tap Erase All Content and Settings .
Turn on your iPhone and begin setting it up as if it were new.
When you arrive at the window titled Apps and Data , select Restore from iCloud Backup .
Alternatively, you can choose to Restore from iTunes Backup if you've been backing up directly to your computer using iTunes.
Your iPhone may ask you to sign in to your iCloud account using your Apple ID and password. Do so to proceed.
A list of recent backups appears. If there is more than one backup, you may choose the backup you want to use by checking its date and time.
Wait for a while as the data transfer process completes. Once it's done, you should have all the messages and data you had at the time of the backup you selected.
Recover Deleted iPhone Text Messages Using iTunes
If you regularly sync your iPhone with iTunes on your Mac rather than iCloud, iTunes has a backup available from each time you synced – unless you turned off the feature to automatically sync your iPhone with your computer. If you want to get that text message back and you've been backing up your iPhone to your computer, then you can likely retrieve it using a recent backup.
This method erases the data currently on your iPhone and replaces it with a snapshot of the data that was on your iPhone the last time you backed it up. If you aren't comfortable doing this, you may prefer another method.
Connect your iPhone to your computer using an appropriate cable. Your iPhone may ask you to unlock it. If it does, go ahead and do so.
If iTunes doesn't open automatically, open iTunes on your computer manually.
To find your iPhone in iTunes, look for a small icon for your iPhone just below and to the right of the Play button. Select it. If you have more than one connected device, select iPhone from the drop-down menu.
In the Backups section on the right side of the Summary screen, you should see options to manually back up and restore your iPhone, along with the date and method of your most recent backup. Select Restore Backup to proceed.
The most recent backup replaces all the data on your phone. The process takes a while. You should see your missing text messages if your most recent backup took place before they were deleted.
You Can Also Recover Using a Third-Party App for iPhone
If neither of the above methods works for you, the next option is to try a third-party app to recover your deleted text messages. There are plenty of apps out there designed to help you recover deleted text messages, many of which offer free trials and can be used to recover other types of lost data from an iPhone as well. For example, the PhoneRescue and Dr.fone text message recovery apps for iPhone often get positive reviews.
How to Retrieve Deleted Texts on Android
The story is a little different if you're recovering deleted texts on an Android phone . If you haven't backed up text messages to Google's cloud service, your best bet is to use a message recovery app to recover deleted texts. Then, get into the habit of regularly backing up your Android phone so you can retrieve texts and other data in the future.
This information applies no matter who made your Android phone: Samsung, Google, Huawei, Xiaomi, or another manufacturer.
These apps often offer free trials and include the ability to recover other types of data from your Android, which can come in handy. Some of the third-party apps for recovering deleted texts on Android that get positive nods online include SMS Backup & Restore , FonePaw Android Data Recovery , and MobiKin Doctor for Android .
It is stressful to realize you accidentally deleted an important message, but with some patience and the right tools, you can often recover the deleted messages. By regularly backing up your iPhone or Android device, you can have the peace of mind of knowing you'll never lose another important text message.
The easiest way is to search in the Facebook Messenger app for the conversation you think you deleted. Once that chat is located, send a new message to the recipient to unarchive the entire conversation.
There is no way to recover deleted messages in Textme. You might try some recovery utilities such as EaseUS , but the official word is that there is no "Undo" command for deletion of any file in TextMe.

Why do my messages disappear on my Android ? This guide will tell you if you can view your SMS history on this popular mobile carrier service provider. And, we’ll teach you how to do it too. In the end, we’ll give you a tip on how to restore your messages if you can’t view them. Check out the details below.

Part 1: Can Verizon Give Me Text History? Part 2: How to View Verizon Text Messages History Part 3: Can You Get Verizon Deleted Text Messages Back? Part 4: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Part 5: Conclusion
Part 1: Can Verizon Give Me Text History?
You can actually see your Verizon text messages history as the company allows you to do so. This is a good thing because a lot of other companies only provide the contact number information of incoming and outgoing SMS.
With Verizon, you have the ability to see your history for text messages . As long as you have access to a phone number and its security details, you can view the SMS history of both messages that have been received and sent.
But what if you want to check the Verizon text messages history of others? Well, you won’t be able to do it unless you have the actual login details of the specific contact number you wish to see the text messages history of.

Part 2: How to View Verizon Text Messages History
To provide great service to their customers, Verizon text messages history can now be viewed through the access given by the company. This can be done on their website. First, you have to set up your account and then sign into it. The most recent messages from the last 5 days can be seen. In addition, you can only see messages that you have sent and received from other Verizon consumers.
In order to view your message history within the last 5 days, go to the Verizon website and log in using your phone number. After this, choose“Account” and then “Text Online”. Then, you can view the Verizon messages by scrolling through the messages you have communicated with a particular contact number.
In addition, you can select the conversation that you wish to see the message history for. The text log provided by Verizon can be made available only for the contact number that is signed in.
How to Check Log of Text Messages
If you just want to check out your text log from Verizon, you have the ability to do it as well. For each phone, Verizon puts into storage about 12 months’ worth of records. Thus, this will help you check out more than 5 days’ worth of Verizon text messages history.
With this method, you are able to see which contact numbers you have communicated with, including those that do not use the Verizon mobile carrier. This is different from the conversation records which only display those from other Verizon consumers.
To view your text message log history, sign in to your account at the Verizon website. Then, visit “Bill Summary” and go to the option that says “Charges By Line”. The call data for every number that’s part of your Verizon account will be displayed.
In this section, you’ll see only about 12 months of data. Thus, if you wish to keep records so you can use them for future purposes, you should export them to your computer. You can do this by saving them as Excel spreadsheets or PDF documents. How about checking Verizon's text messages history through your mobile device? We’ll check that out below.
Can Verizon Owner View Text Messages Through A Mobile Device?
How can I see text messages on my Verizon bill? Verizon text messages history can be viewed through the application called My Verizon. This can be downloaded through Google Play Store and Apple App Store. This app allows you to do a lot of stuff that can be convenient for you.
For instance, you can use it to view Verizon text messages history. In addition, you can utilize the app to monitor the usage of data, upgrade or downgrade your plan, check out your bill, and a whole lot more.
First, you have to download the application from the App Store or Google Play Store . Then, log into your account. In order to view your records for text messages, choose “Menu” located at the top right corner, and choose the option for “Bill”.
Now, you can select the label that says “View Bill Details”. You will be taken to the page where you can view your paper bill. In this interface, you will see calls you have received and sent and the data about them. The amount of data you see will depend on the time period set.

How to Check Text Records of Other Phone Numbers
Do you want to see Verizon text messages history of other people, especially for accounts you’re paying for within the household? Well, you’ll run into some problems if you want to do so. This is because you have to sign into the cellphone number of that particular account if you wish to view its own text message records.
This means that even though you’re paying for your child’s plan, you won’t have access to their records. Of course, that is unless they show it to you themselves. You need to have the password of the person to be able to see their Verizon text messages history.
Again, you won’t have access to the records of other people not in your plan. This is for security purposes. And, of course, you will benefit from it too. You wouldn’t want other snooping into your text messages and call logs, do you?
However, if you require text messages or call logs for legal or criminal cases, then you can ask the law enforcement or the legal court system to access the information for you. As you can see, Verizon protects its customers and you have to thank them for it.
Part 3: Can You Get Verizon Deleted Text Messages Back? [Bonus Tip]
Retrieving deleted messages from Verizon is possible. To accomplish this, you can use FoneDog Android Data Recovery to scan your deleted messages and retrieve data back from the Verizon phone. This tool allows you to recover a lot of different data types including call logs, text messages, audio, video, photos, and documents, among others.
The quicker you act, the more chance to recover the messages back. Click the button below to give it a shot to have a try for free.
Free Download Free Download
This tool has an easy-to-understand and easy-to-use interface even for non-technical people. Recovering your Verizon text messages history conversations with that of non-Verizon users is possible with the tool.

Part 4: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. can i see my husband’s text messages on verizon.
If you know the password to the cellphone number, you can see the text message history. And, of course, you can view them if your husband has allowed you to do so. If you need it for legal purposes, then you can ask legal authorities to get it for you.
2. How Do I See My Text Messages History?

Part 5: Conclusion
Verizon text messages history can be seen through the online website or through the app provided by the mobile carrier service provider. Actual text messages can be seen for only the last 5 days. A 12-month record of logs can also be seen without the conversations in it.
If you wish to restore a message from a non-Verizon user, you can use FoneDog Android Data Recovery to restore your SMS. In this way, you don’t lose important text messages and the information contained within it.
As such, if you want to, you should get FoneDog Android Data Recovery now. The tool allows you to check if you can actually restore the data before purchasing it. Plus, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee!

Chats are the new letters. Here’s how to preserve them accordingly.
Your texts with loved ones might seem silly now, but here’s why you should keep them and how to do it.

Text conversations seem unimportant in the moment. They’re a jumpy collection of short sentences and single words, inside jokes, a smattering of emojis, maybe a GIF here and there. At a glance, they don’t seem nearly as worth preserving as a thought-out letter or personal email.
But a long text conversation with a family member, partner or friend can be a priceless memory later on. They document our relationships going back years, and scrolling through one can be like hopping in a time machine or hearing someone’s voice again. Because the exchanges are spontaneous, they can be a more genuine refection of what a person is like.
So how do we treat them more like letters? Many of us don’t think about how to save digital chats until there’s a reason, like a loved one dying or a breakup. Unfortunately, that can be too late for some of these files. Whether it’s Apple’s iMessage or WhatsApp, here’s what you should start thinking about now if you want to look back fondly on chat logs.
Some voice mails are unspeakably precious. Here’s how to save them.
Identify what’s worth saving
Think about how many people you’ve messaged this week and how many words you exchanged. Even just today, perhaps while reading this site. Overwhelmed?
We generate a massive amount of digital documentation, and while saving it all through regular backups is common, actually archiving conversations for the future requires some editing. Storage isn’t free and backups can be lost or overwritten. If a chat is particularly meaningful, you’ll want to take extra steps to make sure it’s safe and accessible for a longer time. That starts with choosing what matters to you.
“It is so personal. If we look back at ancient documents, even from 100 years ago, there’s not so much to select from,” says archivist Margot Note, author of “ Creating Family Archives ,” a guide to preserving personal documents. “Now there’s almost an influx of information, it’s more finding the needle in the haystack.”
That might mean identifying the people whose conversations mean the most to you. Your parents or children, a spouse or a best friend. Even one of those documents could include far more than you want — like a few sweet exchanges between pages of grocery list reminders. If so, you’ll want to keep an eye out for exchanges that are meaningful and save them at the time.
You can change your mind or add anyone else to the list as life goes on. The secret is to have good backups to draw from and saved in multiple locations. (We’ll get to that later.)
Not every conversation should be saved, especially not in an unencrypted easy-to-view digital format. When texts are saved like this, they are at higher risk of being exposed, either through hacks or legal processes. Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes discovered this when her intimate text messages with former partner and boyfriend Sunny Balwani were entered as evidence in her recent fraud trial.
If you are having conversations that are high risk, there are precautions you can take to make sure your chat histories are as secure as possible. We break down everything you need to know to chat securely in this article . But many of those strategies, like disappearing messages, won’t leave any trail to look back on.
How to keep your intimate, embarrassing or damaging text messages as private as possible
Check your settings
Chat apps have settings for how long conversations are saved. For example, on an Apple device, you can choose to keep messages for 30 days, 1 year or forever. On Signal, you can set a timer for how long chats will be around before they disappear. Make sure the chats you’re interested in aren’t set to delete after a set period of time. (Some apps will let you decide on each conversation and others are across all chats.)
If you’re mostly worried about photos that people share with you over messages and not the chit chat, check for a setting that will automatically save images to your device or a cloud service, like on WhatsApp.
The flip side to keeping messages forever is that they can start sucking up storage on your devices or in cloud accounts, especially when they contain lots of images. That can be fixed with a different backup system and by taking back ownership of your own conversations.
Find your file format, from PDFs to paper
Our love for our families might be forever, but file formats aren’t. To have the best chance of keeping these saved conversations long-term, you’ll want to choose formats that will likely be around for a long time. And the ultimate way to future proof conversations is, yes, paper.
A printed document, especially on archival quality paper, can outlast your computer and the tech companies and apps that come and go. Because chats can be lengthy, you could even turn one into a bound book using a tool like Keepster.
“In many ways the physical stuff is easier to preserve and will last longer. We know how long paper will preserve over time. It can save for hundreds of years,” says Note, the archivist.
Digital files are still necessary, especially for anything so big, and you’ll need a search function. Note recommends saving conversations and any other important text as PDF/A files. Unlike regular PDFs, these files include all the fonts and other elements to make sure the file looks the same when you open it in the future.
You can also save simple file types like a text document or a CSV (comma separate value, which can be viewed in a spreadsheet app.)
Pry your conversations away from Apple
While many apps let you just copy and paste your conversations into a fresh file, or export them, sometimes it’s tricky, like in the case of Apple’s iMessage.
Apple’s iMessage is the company’s default encrypted messaging system. It uses the Messages app on iOS devices or a desktop and includes features that only work between Apple customers while Android acquaintances are marked with a green bubble. The messages are encrypted, which makes them very secure but also difficult to extract from the Apple ecosystem.
There’s an advantage to having all your texts in Messages and saved to iCloud. They’re searchable and in their original format and you always know where to find them. If you are using iCloud, they can quickly eat up your storage and, if something goes wrong with a backup, be deleted accidentally. Or maybe you’re just switching to Android.
To get those conversations, you can turn on the Messages app on a computer. If you don’t see the conversation here but it is on your phone or iPad, open Settings and make sure your Apple account is enabled. Next, you have two options. With the conversation open, scroll up as far as the chat goes. If it’s years, this might take a while. Go to Print and select PDF or select all, copy and paste into a text document or spreadsheet program.
There are drawbacks to each. The PDFs will be long with lots of unnecessary space. One month of regular chats can easily run over 50 pages. Copying and pasting is more compact but doesn’t include any dates or images.
Third party apps can help. iMazing is a Mac app with a free trial and $35 paid version for managing the data on your iPhone or iPad, or a backup you’ve made of a device and saved to your computer. If you’re working with an encrypted backup, you will need the encryption password for iMazing to be able to read the data. Or you can use an unencrypted backup of your phone. The app has options for exporting as a PDF, Excel file, CSV, text or just for pulling out all the attachments like images and videos.
Beyond Apple, each chat app usually has an export option but if not, copy and paste is clean and simple. This works well for direct messages on social media sites. There is also the in-the-moment option of making a screenshot or screen recording of exchanges you want to keep. If you see something quotable and memorable, take a screenshot and drop it into a folder especially for those greatest hits.
Remember to name any files and folders descriptively so they’re easy to find, says Note.
Back it up, then back it up again
You have four lengthy text docs or PDFs saved, filled with years of banter with your favorite people. Now where do they go?
At least three different places. Put them in a folder and save them to the cloud service you currently use, like Google Drive, Dropbox or iCloud. Save one copy on your computer. Then save on an external hard drive. This gives you three redundancy plans. Four if you also printed it out on paper and safely put it in a filing cabinet, five if it’s also in the original app.
And having it all in those locations means that whenever you want to relive something, or remember someone, you’re just a few taps or clicks away.

Getting a new phone is rough. You essentially lose everything you had on the old phone, which can be a little be a bit of a shock for the first several days. While some things—like pictures, for example—automatically come with you through your Google account, other creature comforts, like your text messages, don’t automatically sync.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you can’t stand the sight of an empty SMS box, you can easily move all of your current messages to a new phone in just a few steps with an app called SMS Backup & Restore .
The first thing you’ll need to do is install said app on both phones, and make sure each of them are on the same Wi-Fi network. It won’t work over a cellular network!
Open the app on both phones. On the main screen, tap the “Transfer” button. A new box will open with the details of how transferring works—in a nutshell, it sends the info over Wi-Fi. Select the appropriate option on each phone: “Send from this phone” on the old handset, “Receive on this phone” on the new one.
The phones will immediately start looking for each other on the network. Once the sending phone sees the receiving phone, tap it in the list. This will initiate the transfer.
The sending phone will push an “invite” to the receiving phone. You’ll of course need to accept this invite before anything will happen.
Once the phones have made a connection, the sending phone will give you a few options: “Transfer texts and call logs from the current state”, or “Use the most recent backup”. If you’ve never used SMS Backup & Restore before, then you shouldn’t have a backup available and will want to use the first option. Either way, honestly, I’d just go ahead and choose the first one. It’s the most up-to-date.
The sending phone will immediately make a backup and push it over to the receiving phone. At this point, just hang out for a second. It won’t take long. Once it’s finished, you’ll get a notification on the receiving phone asking if you want to Accept and Restore. You do.
Once you’ve chosen to do so, the transfer will begin. When it’s finished, you’re essentially done with the sending phone—from here on out, everything else is handled on the receiving phone. After the file finishes transferring, you’ll get a notification about a limitation in Android starting with KitKat that only allows the default SMS app to restore messages. Ergo, you’ll have to set SMS Backup & Restore as your default, at least until the transfer is finished. Tap “OK.”
On the next screen, tap “Yes” to make SMS Backup & Restore your default SMS app. Again, you can change it back to your preferred texting app once it’s finished restoring.
And now, that process begins. Kick back, get a coffee. Read a book. Watch TV. Do something that doesn’t including messing with your phone—this is going to take a while (depending on how much info it has to transfer), so just let it do its thing.
Once it’s finished, you’ll get a notification stating such, along with all the details of the transfer. Look at all those messages! You can tap the notification if you want, but it’ll just launch the SMS Backup & Restore app with the same info, so you might as well just dismiss it.
Go ahead and jump into your preferred SMS app—all of your existing texts should now show up in the new phone. The call log should also be populated with the info from your other phone.
If you had to make SMS Backup & Restore the default app in the steps above, go ahead and jump into Android’s Default Apps menu and change it back to your normal messaging app. You’re done!

How to delete and recover text messages in Android

Deleting text messages is usually a straightforward affair, but some people may be confused about (or unaware of) the different ways you can select and delete text messages on an Android device. This guide shows you how.
Delete an individual text message on Android
Delete an individual text message on samsung, delete an individual text message on facebook messenger, delete multiple messages at once on android, delete multiple messages at once on samsung, recovering text messages, use google drive, use third-party software, android data recovery ($50), wondershare dr.fone ($70+), fonepaw ($49+), sms backup & restore (free), what you need.
Android device
Facebook Messenger app
The following instructions cover Google’s Android Messages app and the stock app that comes pre-installed on Samsung phones . We also show how to delete SMS messages in Facebook Messenger if you set it as your default.
All instructions listed below show how to delete single and multiple messages. However, if you accidentally deleted the wrong message(s), we suggest a few tools to get them back.
This applies to Google’s Messages app. The icon has lines in a conversation bubble.
Step 1: Tap to open Messages.
Step 2: Tap and hold on the message you want to be deleted. Tap the X in the top left corner if you marked the wrong message, or tap the message to deselect.

Step 3: Tap the trash icon located in the top right corner.
Step 4: Tap Delete in the pop-up window to confirm.
This applies to Samsung’s stock Messages app installed on its phones. The icon has dots in a conversation bubble.
Step 2: Tap and hold on the message you want to be deleted. Tap it again to deselect it if you marked the wrong message.
Step 3: Tap Delete located on the slide-up menu at the bottom.
If you’re using Facebook’s app as your default SMS client, you can filter out your private messages by tapping the SMS button in the app’s search bar, leaving only SMS messages visible. Tap it again to add Facebook messages back to the list.
Step 1: Tap to open Facebook Messenger.
Step 2: Tap and hold on the message you want to be deleted.
Step 3: Tap Delete listed on the pop-up menu.
Unfortunately, there’s no way to delete multiple messages at once from within the Messenger app.
Step 2: Tap and hold on the first message you want to delete. A checkmark should appear to its left.
Step 3: Tap on all other messages you want to be deleted.
Step 4: Tap Delete located on the slide-up menu at the bottom.
Step 5: Tap Delete in the pop-up window to confirm.
If you accidentally deleted texts and need to restore them, immediately put the Android device into airplane mode. This prevents further changes to your local data, in this case, your phone overwriting deleted texts with new ones. After that, you have two options.
One way to restore deleted messages is to reset the phone to its factory defaults and then restore it with a backup saved on Google Drive. However, you need to check this backup first and make sure it wasn’t saved after you deleted the texts. If it was saved after the deletion, there’s no reason to take this route.
If you haven’t backed up to Google Drive, skip this section altogether.
Step 1: Tap to open Google Drive.
Step 2: Tap the three-line “hamburger” icon located in the top left corner.
Step 3: Tap Backups listed on the roll-out menu.
Step 4: Tap Backup, listed under This Device .
On this screen, you should see an SMS entry. If it’s dated before you deleted the texts, then you can use it to restore your deleted texts. This is an extreme option, however, but the only one outside of using third-party software.
Here are a few suggestions that work well in retrieving deleted texts.
This is one of the more popular tools in recovering data from an Android phone, including text messages. Available for Windows 10 and MacOS, this desktop software will scan all deleted items and present a list of data you can pick and choose to recover. It even retrieves deleted photos, videos, messages, and photos delivered through WhatsApp.
Android Recovery
This restoration tool supports the most modern Android devices. You can also download and install the application on both MacOS and Windows-based devices. This program will enable you to promptly retrieve text messages, images, videos, and even information from third-party apps like WhatsApp and others. In addition, it can help you to collect lost files from your device, resulting from a system failure, rooting error, and many more unfortunate situations.
Wondershare
This specific software will allow you to recover information from machines operating on the latest version of Android, all the way back to the ancient Android 2.1. It’s compatible with all the most popular brands and will also assist you in recovering many different types of data, from text messages and contacts to images, media, and documents. It can even retrieve WhatsApp data. The restoration consists of internal storage, as well as SD cards and SIM cards.
To protect your text messages and make sure they’re secure, you must have an application that produces backups of your texts. If you regularly create backups, then you’re one of the fortunate ones. This application will allow you to save texts and call records. It runs on devices with the Android 4.0.3 version or above and is extremely easy to use, permitting you to back up to Google Drive or Dropbox.

Sprint Text Message History Hack
Sprint account holders may look for a Sprint text message history hack to view their old messages.
Or perhaps you’d like to view the text message history of another Sprint account holder. Either way, retrieving that message history can sometimes be tricky.
Essentially, you have four options for accessing Sprint text message history. If you’re looking for your own message history, you can view it on your phone or via the Sprint website.
Sprint’s customer service team may be able to assist if you struggle to find the messages. Alternatively, you could use Eyezy’s phone monitoring software to access someone else’s Sprint message history.
This article will give you the tools you need to access old Sprint text messages and more. Keep reading to discover the solution to your challenge.
4 Effective Sprint Text Message History Hack Options
If you’d like to access your Sprint message history, there are four different approaches you can choose from.
But before we get stuck into these methods, it should be noted that these solutions won’t work for deleted messages.
Sprint does not keep a record of the content of your text messages. Therefore, once a message is deleted from your device, you can no longer access it.
We would also like to point out that Sprint merged with T-Mobile in April 2020. And they are in the process of shifting from Sprint to the T-Mobile brand.
Therefore, Sprint will be done away with soon and referred to as T-Mobile. That said, you can still access the Sprint website as of writing this article.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the four different methods for accessing old Sprint text messages.
1.) View Text Message History On Your Phone
If the old text messages haven’t been deleted, you should still be able to see them on your phone.
Simply open your text messaging app and scroll through your messages as far back as possible. If there’s a specific message you’re looking for, use the search bar at the top of your messaging app to find it.
Remember that older messages are sometimes archived by your phone to save space. So, if you’re looking for a really old text message, check your Archives folder too.
It may also be worth looking in your Junk messages folder if you struggle to find the message. But remember that deleted messages cannot be retrieved.

2.) Access Your Message Logs Online

If you haven’t set up an online account, you can use your Sprint mobile and identification numbers.
Once your account is set up, you can log in to view data relating to your account. This includes call and text message logs.
Unfortunately, these logs won’t show you the content of the messages sent and received. This is because Sprint does not keep a record of this information.
However, the logs will show you the date and time your messages were received or sent. And they’ll show you the numbers that sent and received those messages.
Sprint lets you access this information and more from your Sprint account dashboard. You can also download logs, reports, bills, and more.
2.) Contact Sprint Customer Support
Call customer support if you’re struggling to view your text message logs on the Sprint website or messages on your phone.
Sprint’s customer service representatives are highly knowledgeable and efficient. And they should be able to help you retrieve your text message logs reasonably quickly.
However, Sprint’s customer service representatives won’t be able to see the content of your text messages.
Therefore, they aren’t able to share this information with you. But they can assist you with almost anything else related to your Sprint account.
Use Message Monitoring Software To See Someone’s Text Message History
Perhaps you’d like to access someone else’s text message history. This is often the case when a parent wants to see who has been texting their child. Keeping your loved one safe when texting, calling, browsing, or using social media on their phones is easy. All you need is a reputable phone monitoring app to keep tabs on their activity.
Eyezy is the ideal phone monitoring software for checking your loved one’s Sprint text message history.
You can use the app to scroll through old messages, view new ones, and receive notifications when messages come through. You can even download their messages to your phone to keep as a record.
The app does all this and much more while remaining completely hidden from the target user. So, they’ll have no idea you’ve been viewing their activity and accessing their messages.
Setting up Eyezy is super straightforward. However, you will need access to the target phone for a minute or so to install the software. Other than that, the process is incredibly easy.
How to Set Up Eyezy
Here are the steps you’ll need to follow to set up the Eyezy app on the target phone:
- Hop onto the Eyezy website to create an account for yourself.
- Download the Eyezy app from the Google Play or Apple app stores to your device.
- Log in to your account via the app using the username and password you input when you created your account.
- Get hold of the target phone, making sure you have at least a minute or two alone with it.
- Open the Eyezy app on your phone and select the plus sign icon at the top of the screen.
- Eyezy will ask you whether you’d like to send a link to the target phone or receive a QR code to scan with the target phone.
- If you send a link to the target phone, open it on that phone and tap on the link. This will initiate the Eyezy app download process in the background.
- Remember to delete the message you sent to the phone to ensure the user doesn’t see it.
- If you choose to scan a QR code, the code will appear on your device, and you’ll need to scan it using the target device’s camera. After this, the app will start downloading in the background.
- Make sure you delete any activity history if you spent any time scrolling through the phone while installing the Eyezy app.
- There’s nothing more for you to do on the target phone. You can place it back where you found it and rest assured, knowing that the Eyezy app is hidden and operating in the background.
Powerful Eyezy App Features

These are just some of the fantastic features you can enjoy with the Eyezy app:
- Call Logging: See who calls your loved one and when. You’ll have access to their call history and can set up alerts for calls received or made to specific numbers.
- GPS Tracking: View your loved one’s movements in real time. Pinpoint exactly where they are if you need to, and monitor where they’ve been.
- Geofencing : This feature gives you the power to determine which areas are safe and which are not. You’ll be alerted immediately if your loved one enters an area you’ve deemed unsafe.
- Social Media Monitoring: Monitor activity on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, and more. See their posts, comments, likes, and private conversations.
Viewing your Sprint text message history is easy if the messages are stored and not deleted. And if you’d like to see someone else’s Sprint text message history, you’ll need a powerful phone monitoring app.
Eyezy is one of the best phone monitoring apps on the market, making the perfect solution for your Sprint text message history quandary.
1.) Will My Text Messages Appear On My Itemized Sprint Bill?
No. You’ll only see a record of when messages were sent. The bill will detail the date and time of the message and the number it was sent to.
2.) Can I See Deleted Sprint Text Messages?
Unfortunately, not. Sprint does not keep a record of these in a way that you can have access to them.
3.) How Can I Retrieve A Deleted Sprint Text Message?
The only way to access your deleted Sprint text message is through law enforcement services. This will only happen if your messages are needed for a criminal investigation.
A criminal case must be opened, and only messages relating directly to the case can be retrieved.

Verizon Messages (Message+) may be the default Messaging app on many Verizon Android devices. Messages sent or received in one app will also appear in the other app. You may receive duplicate notifications or only receive notifications from one app, depending on your notification settings. In addition, there may be differences in functionality that impact your messaging experience (e.g., on some devices, if you use the native app to send a group message to iPhone®, it may change your thread from group MMS to mass text). We recommend selecting a primary messaging app, instead of jumping back and forth

How to Retrieve Text Message History
By Kirk Bennet
Updated September 28, 2017
Retrieving your cell phone's message history is relatively easy and straightforward. Use the cell phone itself to see the message history or, if you are a person who constantly deletes his or her messages, use the online account created on your carrier's website to retrieve the text message history. Although you will often not be able to see the actual messages' text on the carrier's website, you will be able to see when they were sent and the destination number.
From Your Cell Phone
Unlock your cell phone and enter the menu. Although the position of the menu button varies, it should be very visible. Unlike traditional phones, most touchscreen phones have an icon on their display that opens the menu.
Look for the word "Messaging" in the menu. The menu will contain a multitude of icons or a list of items, depending on your phone model. Enter the Messaging area.
Find the "Sent" and "Received" sections. You might find them named "Inbox" and "Outbox," depending on your phone's model. You will find all the sent and received messages in this section.
Open a message. You will be able to see the text, time and date and sender or receiver. If you deleted some or all of your messages, you need to sign into your online account to retrieve the message history.
From Your Online Account
Open your favorite Web browser on your computer and navigate to your carrier's website. You will see a "My Account" button or another type of Log In section. For example, AT&T has the "myAT&T" link. Enter the section.
Create an account if you don't have one. Follow the simple instructions. Log into your account with your username and password.
Find a section named "Messaging" or something similar. Enter the section and you will see your messages. Depending on your carrier, you can see when you sent and received messages, the senders and receivers and even the content of the messages.
You can retrieve the text message history with the help of law enforcement agencies.

[2023] What is the Best Way to Transfer Text Messages from Android to PC?
Can I transfer text messages from my Android phone to my computer?
This is a quite popular question among Android users. We received two user feedback in the past week about this and we made up our mind to write a tutorial for this topic.
Honestly, there are dozens of apps and workarounds available to help you transfer text messages from Android phone to a PC. However, you might be curious which solution is the best in 2023! We will show you how to export text messages from Android to computer in a very simple way.
Table of Contents
Benefits of Transferring Text Messages from Android to PC
Transferring text messages from an Android phone to a computer can be a useful way to protect important conversations as backup or free up more space on Android device. Whether you’re switching to a new phone or just want to keep a record of SMS conversations, it is not an easy process to get text messages from Android phone to a computer.
Pros of Transferring Text Messages from Android to Computer:
1. Backup : Text messages are very important assets on a phone. Transferring text messages to computer is a great way to make a backup of messages. When the phone is broken or lost, you can easily restore the messages from previous backup.
2. Free up Store : There might be thousands of junk or spam text messages on your Android phone and they can take up a lot of storage, so transferring them to a computer can help free up space for other apps and files.
3. Easily Accessible : Once the text messages are downloaded to a computer, you can easily access them whenever you need to. This can be especially useful if you need to refer back to an old conversation or if you need to look up a phone number or address.
4. Printable : Text messages and conversations are not printable from an Android device. However, once they are exported to a computer, the file will be printable by default. Sometimes, we need the text conversation as evidence for court.
Can I Directly Export Android SMS to Computer?
From my own experience on a Samsung phone, you can only export a single text message from Android to PC by the default Messages app via the “Share” function. In addition, only text will be saved and no phone number and time stamp along with the content, which is a big minus.

To transfer multiple text messages or entire conversation, you have to use a third-party software or mobile app to complete the task. It is an automated process and the exported messages have all the details as the original ones on Android phone.
Why Transferring Android SMS to PC is So Hard?
Text message is a special type of information being stored in a SQLite database on an Android phone. It is not a normal file like photos, videos and PDF documents, which can be easily shared to computer with copy-paste, Bluetooth or Email.
To export Android text messages, you have to pull off the entire information from database via SQL Query. Unfortunately, Android OS does not provide such feature by default. Luckily, this can be done with the help of third-party tools by setting up a database connection between Android OS and the app.

All-Round Comparison Chart
Our final suggestion.
It is really hard to decide which app is the best for message backup. It depends on what kind of functions the app provides for and your budget. TunesBro DroidGeeker seems more suitable for people who are looking for a fast solution to directly transfer text messages from Android phone to PC. It is the only app that offers this feature. Additionally, it saves time and the exported messages can be printed. The only drawback is that you need to purchase a license to activate the program.
Our second recommendation is SMS Backup. It is completely free and the exported HTML file is with great formatting for print.
For SMS backup purpose, SMS Backup & Restore and SMS Backup are quite good choices for that. They can not only backup text messages to a local folder but also support cloud drive.
Lastly, if you want to export text messages in PDF or image format, then SMS Backup & Print is best solution you can choose from.

Want to see deleted messages on WhatsApp and Instagram? Here’s how
If the "this message was deleted" text causes you an itch whenever you see it, these two methods to recover deleted texts can help scratch that..

There was a time when you had second thoughts about a text you just sent, absolutely nothing could be done about it. Then came the delete message and unsend options, changing the world forever. If you reminisce about those bygone days often, then you’d be pleased to know that deleted messages are still recoverable, at least if you’re using an Android. There are two ways to do that on the OS, which we have listed below.
Using Notification History
The first method exploits a feature Google itself has integrated into Android. Notification History stores your recent notifications even after dismissal. When toggled on, swiping away any message immediately sends it to the Notification History tab, wherein you can find it easily.
- 1 Acer Swift Go 14 thin and light laptop with Ryzen 7000 series chips launched
- 2 Behold, the all-new yellow iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
- 3 Poco X5 launch soon: Here’s everything to know about the device
Funnily, deleted and unsent messages across WhatsApp and Instagram behave similarly to dismissed messages. This means that they make their way to the Notification History tab where they stay safe and sound for you to see.

Getting to the Notification History tab involves going through the same steps across most Android devices.
1. Open the Settings app, navigate to Notifications, then open Notification History 2. Enable Notification History 3. Now any deleted messages from both WhatsApp and Instagram will show up here
Just note that a deleted message will only be kept in this tab for 24 hours, after which it’ll be permanently deleted.
Notification History is quite effective, but not every Android phone has it. Xiaomi , the second most popular smartphone brand in India, has disabled the feature on its MIUI skin for some reason. If you are a Xiaomi user and your fear of missing out is kicking in, then fret not for there’s an alternative way.

WAMR is a nifty tool for recovering deleted messages on not just WhatsApp and Instagram, but on just about every chat app there is. And unlike Notification History which forgets your treasured deleted messages in just 24 hours, WAMR goes the extra mile in storing them permanently. To get started with it, follow the steps below.
1. Download WAMR from the Google Play Store 2. Open the app and grant it the necessary permissions like notification access 3. Select the apps you wish to save logs for 4. After the setup is complete, you’ll be taken to the page where deleted messages will start appearing 5. Tap on the hamburger menu on the top left to switch between apps

Do note that granting notification access to an app lets it read all your notifications, which may include personal information such as contacts, messages, and photos. While WAMR seems safe as apparent from the hundreds of thousands of positive reviews, it always pays to exercise discretion.

A hundred years ago, we could never have imagined how technology evolved so rapidly. From telegraphs to text messages, we have come a long way. But in that time, we have become a little spoiled. No, it is not enough to send an instant message halfway around the world on a whim — it must have the right color to match our mood, too!
If you’re an iPhone user, you might have tried changing the color of the bubble that your iMessage texts appear in at some point. You might be surprised that many people are unaware that they can change the color of their iMessage bubble.
Like many other users, we have not been able to stop using iMessage, which shows how powerful Apple’s texting platform is. Let us discuss iMessage color change options in detail in today’s guide!
Is It Even Possible to Change iMessage Colors?
One way to make your iPhone your own is to learn how to change the color of iMessage . But the problem becomes apparent if you dig a little deeper. Apple has always had very strict rules related to what users can change or customize.
With newer versions of the device, widgets that can be changed have given iPhone owners much more control over how they look. You can now use custom fonts on your iPhone , or you can switch to Dark mode for a whole new look.
The company cannot keep up with the new features that Android phones are adding, and customization is a big part of that. Apple added Animoji, Memoji, and Stickers, which changed the level of interaction in the texting platform.
But they didn’t think of adding any user-customizable options for the color of the iMessage bubble. In other words, they don’t let you change your iMessage color! Instead, you must use a third-party app. But, fear not, because it is a relatively straightforward process.
What Do the Different Message Colors Mean?
Most of the time, you only have three different colors for the message bubbles, and each one stands for something different.
1. Blue Colored Bubble: This is the color for iMessage , which are messages sent using Apple’s proprietary text-message service to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
2. Green Colored Bubble: This is the SMS color, which means that any user can receive SMS messages (Apple or Android).
3. Grey Colored Bubble: It is the color of any message you receive, whether it’s an iMessage or an SMS.
How to Use the Color Text Bubbles App to Change iMessage Color
If you are unable to change the color of the iMessage bubble, you can use apps that are built for this purpose. Different guides across the internet will recommend different apps to get the job done, and that’s fine.
But, speaking from experience — this is the easiest app to change your iMessage color without signing up for anything or paying for a subscription.
If you do not want to be charged for any one of the countless apps available, you can use Color Text Bubbles in the iMessage app to change the color of the bubbles for free, but you will have to deal with ads. Not a huge drawback considering you get to enjoy some fancy new colors.
To use the Color Text Bubbles app to change the color of your iMessage , you first have to follow these steps:
- Download the Color Text Bubbles from the App Store.
- Open the Messages app.
Once you’ve done that, you can get Color Text Bubble on iMessage. Let’s explore the process one step at a time.
Step 1: Open a Conversation and Click New Message
To change iMessage color, start by clicking on any conversation that is already started. After that, click on the icon New Message .
Above the keyboard of your chat, you will be able to see a list of apps. Click and hold them.

Step 2: Open Color Text Bubble
While you are touching the screen of your device, you will have to swipe to the left side to find the app Color Text Bubble .
Important note : Color Text Bubble will not be available on iMessage until you download it first from the App Store.

Type 3: Type Custom Message
It is up to you to choose from the available styles or messages. You can also click on the option Type Custom Message to make a new style of your own.

Step 4: Choose Your Color Options
Now, you can choose the color from the available options. In the free version, you can access almost 12 colors and grayscale options.
Once you are done with the above-mentioned steps, click on Send. Your friends won’t see the new color but you will!

How to Make the Color of iMessage Darker
If, for some reason, you are unable to change the color of the iMessage bubble, you may at least want to make the blur a little darker, and the effect will make the bubble appear pretty neat.
It is possible that you saw a friend’s iMessage bubble color set to a dark blue, and now you want to set it to the same color. Following these simple instructions, you will be able to learn how to change the color of iMessage to dark blue.
Step 1: Go to the Settings Menu
On your iPhone , navigate to the Settings menu.

Step 2: Click Accessibility
Scroll down and choose Accessibility from the menu.

Step 3: Click Display and Text Size
Locate the option Display & Text Size under the Vision menu.

Step 4: Increase Contrast
Activate the switch labeled Increase Contrast.
Your iMessage will take on a dark blue appearance as a result, and you will not even need to download an app from a third party or jailbreak your iPhone to do it!
Be warned that this look isn’t for everyone, but no worries because you can always change it back by toggling off the switch.

How to Change iMessage Color (with Photos) FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
How can you alter the appearance of the text in your iMessages?
If you have jailbroken your iPhone, you will have the option to alter the color of your iMessages. If it is not, then you can send text messages in the form of images that can be customized by downloading any messaging bubble software from the Apple App Store.
Can the text on an iPhone be changed to a different color?
Yes, but you cannot alter the colors of the text on an iPhone without first jailbreaking the device or using a third-party application.
What gives my iMessages its emerald shade?
There are two situations in which iMessages will seem green. The color of your iMessages will change to green if you send them to someone who uses Android. Alternatively, if you do not have an internet connection, the iMessages you send will be converted into regular SMS text messages rather than true iMessages.
How do I make my iMessage bubble dark blue?
You can change the color of the bubbles in your iMessage by going to Settings . From here, find the option of Accessibility and click on Display & Text Size where you can raise the level of contrast.
Why are the responses to my SMS sent to another iPhone appearing green?
If you are sending texts to another iPhone and they are turning green, this indicates that either your iMessages or their iMessages are disabled in the Settings on either device. Because of this, the messages will be sent out as text messages rather than iMessages.
