Popcorn, a limited-budget film starring Avika Gor and Sai Ronak as the lead pair has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Sameerana( Avika Gor) a girl who has a dream of becoming a singer accidentally crosses paths with a guitarist named Pawan( Sai Ronak) at a shopping mall. Later, the two begin their journey in a shutdown lift as strangers. Though initially, they see each other as enemies due to miscommunication, later they become good friends and eventually start liking each other. What situations make them struck in the lift? How will they come out of the dangerous situation? What is the backstory behind Sameerana’s passion for becoming a singer? To know that, you have to watch the film in the cinemas near you.

Performances: As usual, Avika Gor is cute in her modern girl look. Her acting and the way she carried the role bring weightage to the proceedings to an extent. Especially, her performance during the climax portion brings emotional depth to the film.

On the other hand, Sai Ronak is fine in his role as a guitarist. His performance as a modern-day boy is good. He perfectly fitted into the role that carries multiple emotions. The chemistry between Avika Gor and Sai Ronak is showcased in a decent manner.

As most of the film runs on the lead pair, the film hardly has scope for other artists. The lady who played Avika’s mother role did her part good. Senior artist Charuhasan is okay in his limited role.

Technicalities: The major asset of the film is the music composed by Shravan Bharadwaja. The film has half a dozen montage songs which are literally a saved grace for the audience. His fresh instrumentation brings a fresh vibe to all the songs.

MN Bal Reddy’s work as the cinematographer is visible on screen as he used good frames in the lift to showcase the lead pair nicely. His lighting setup is also impressive. Editing by KSR is okay.

Production values for this limited-budget film by Madhupalli Bhogendra Gupta of Acharya Creations, Avika Screen Creations, MS Chalapathi Raju, and Seshu Babu Peddinti are alright.

Analysis: Written and directed by Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham, Popcorn has a fresh concept that revolves around a boy and a girl who are stuck in a lift. Utilizing the point, Murali Naga Srinivas Gandham has the scope to explore the film in a decent way but totally dilutes the audience’s interest with an abrupt narrative.

His writing is poor and lacks proper character establishment scenes. The screenplay is dull and lacks effectiveness. To summarize, Popcorn has technical padding and good performances from the lead pair but struggles with the boring and uneven presentation.

Verdict: Execution syndrome!

Popcorn Movie Review: A decent premise let down by lacklustre writing

Popcorn is a mishmash of different genres, which makes it sound so interesting on paper. Ninety percent of the film’s run time is dedicated to two characters stuck in a lift for almost a day, which qualifies Popcorn to be a chamber film, a beloved mode of storytelling in the world of short films. Sameerana (Avika Gor), the film’s female lead, has asthma and does not have an inhaler with her when she is on the lift for hours on end, so Popcorn also fits nicely in the survival film space a la Mathukutty Xavier’s Helen (2019) or Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped (2016). And lastly, Popcorn is also a romantic comedy that has its characters talking through the entirety of the film. I was reminded of the first half of Tharun Bhascker’s P elli Choopulu (2016) and the iconic lift scene from Pokiri (2006), where Mahesh Babu and Ileana get to know each other better in the time they get stuck together. These comparisons, sadly go on to show the promise this film probably held in its natal stages, only to fall apart in the process of bringing it alive on the big screen.

Popcorn is set around Sameerana and Pavan (Sai Ronak) who get stuck in the lift of a shopping mall. A bomb blast happens earlier in the day, and while they don’t register its impact to realise what happened, there is some exposition to detail them coming to grips with the situation. With the assumption that all civilians have been cleared out of the premises, the police officers and mall security leave, abandoning these two. Sameerana and Pavan start off on a wrong note even before they enter the mall. An interaction that happens early on in the film, where Pavan wrongly assumes that Sameerana insulted his blind grandfather (Charuhasan), sets off the chain of events, making Pavan ambush Sameera in a lift and slap her with zero preamble. The slap scene is sadly, the first of many such scenes, which make you wonder whether you are in 2023 or 2005. While the scene where Pavan hands Sameerana his grandfather’s adult diapers was dealt sensitively, and with maturity, the interval cliffhanger or the constant references to Sunny Leone (there is a hoarding for manforce condoms on the lift), come off as gratuitous and tacky. 

We are never provided with an explanation behind why the bomb blast takes place. All we get to see is a cleaning lady moving around a penguin-shaped trash can with an explosive hidden in it.  Were fundamentalists involved? Was this blast done for insurance money? Was there a personal agenda afoot? These are questions we never get the answers for. There is also a lingering doubt I had about why the film was titled Popcorn . Sure, the snack makes an appearance but that does little to provide any reasoning. This film could have probably benefited from the tension a bomb blast subplot could provide. The need for conflict and urgency to liven up the film’s proceedings is also felt deeply because the leads, though earnest and capable, are given such insipid, blasé dialogue and there is only so much one can do with it.  If most Telugu films need dialogues to thrive, this film needs dialogues to survive and Popcorn , much like Sameerana in the last 20 minutes of the film, is gasping for air. There are a few decent touches, such as the one where Pavan tries to help Sameerana with her singing career or the scenes where Sameera accepts Pavan’s love, which is structured with a set-up and a payoff. In addition to the two leads, we also have a goldfish with a voiceover. I must admit, though I struggled to understand why the goldfish had dialogues - the closing scene, where Sameerana decides to release her pet into the Hussain Sagar by stating, "Have we not understood what confinement feels like," provides a satisfying touch, with me sorely wishing the film had more of them.

Popcarn Tamil Movie

The story is about a young music troupe searching for a guru to train them for a Pop Carnival, a competition where various forms of music are fused. They discover Vikramaditya (Mohanlal), a great musician, who had retired from music. The flashback tells the troupe's discovery of the mystery behind the musician. Though Vikramaditya and his wife Jamuna (Simran), a fusion dancer marry out of admiration for each other, ego clashes between them breaks their marriage after the unexpected birth of their daughter.

After 18 years their daughter, Megha (Jyothi), comes along with a team lead by her mother to perform in the Pop Carnival. The fusion of music at the end of competition, meeting of hearts of two young lovers and the reunion of a father and daughter at the Carnival forms the rest of the story.

There seems to be too many flaws in the script and narration. How do the Pop-Corn organisers allow a celebrated singer to be part of the youth-team, in a contest involving prize for young talents? How does Megha already a part of the Bengali group, be allowed to join the Tamil Nadu team too? Questions only the director can answer! The film which is all about music has no noteworthy songs with the music director Yuvan Shankar Raja failing.

What makes the film tolerable are the performances of the lead players. For Mohanlal, in his second Tamil film after 'Iruvar', its a finely tuned performance as the popular-singer turned alcoholic. Roles of which type he's done in innumerable Malayalam films. Captivating is Simran, as the ambitious dancer, the caring beloved, the furious wife who holds her husband responsible for thwarting her blooming career. Going through the myriad of emotions, Simran is at her best. Fitting the bill is debutant Jyoti (sister of Simran) who plays Simran's daughter in the film. And debutant Shakti from Mumbai theatre. With adequate support from Anju and Pop Shalini.

Uyyala Jampala fame Avika Gor and young hero Sai Ronak starrer Popcorn released in theaters today. Avika Gor turns producer for the first time. Let’s see how the film is.

Sameerana (Avika Gor) wants to become a singer but her health condition becomes a hurdle to achieving her dream. Meanwhile, Pavan (Sai Ronak) is an enthusiastic young lad who wants to become a musician. Unfortunately, they both, who are strangers to each other, get stuck in a lift in a mall. They realise that no one is there to rescue them. What happened between them in the lift? How did the strangers get closer? Did they face any problems in the closed space? Did they come out of the lift? The main film has all the answers.

Plus Points:

Though the narrative is nothing new to movie buffs, it has an okay storyline. Some of the scenes between the lead pair Avika Gor and Sai Ronak are lovely to watch.

Actress Avika Gor, who is well known to Telugu audiences as Chinnari Pellikuthuru, looks so energetic and bubbly in this film. Besides acting, she also co-produced this film. Her acting as Sameerana is okay to watch.

Budding actor Sai Ronak chooses a different concept again. In this movie, he looks charming and also has a satisfactory screen presence. His comedy timing and energetic performance will make him get good offers in TFI.

Minus Points:

When the director wants to make a film, the story needs to be flawless and the actors, technicians and other aspects are secondary. The point of the film, two strangers getting stuck in a lift, is okay but what would make the point more interesting is the proceedings. The film falls flat at this point. The director who also penned the script failed to narrate the story engagingly.

There would have been a lot of space for comedy, emotions, romance and even a message in Popcorn if it had an engaging story and proper narration. But, many scenes, especially in the second half give one boredom as they felt repetitive.

In general, when one gets stuck in a closed space, he would panic and find ways to come out of it as soon as possible. But, the male lead in the film is super cool and doesn’t think about getting out of the lift, at least for the girl. This is one of the loopholes in the story. Also, if a lift hits the ground strongly, the things obviously scatter here and there. But, in a scene, the hero celebrates the heroine’s birthday with an undamaged cake. How is this even possible? The film has many such illogical and silly scenes.

If the writer could have concentrated more on the story, Popcorn would have become a perfect entertainer. The performances from the lead pair have gone in vain because of the shoddy story and screenplay. This kind of movie needs to have fewer songs, but Popcorn has songs which became a hurdle to the flow of the film. The runtime is a major disappointment and it could have been crisper to make the film at least an okay fare.

Technical Aspects:

Writer and director Murali Gandham also penned the dialogues for the film. Some dialogues are okay to listen to. Though his concept is fine, he failed to execute it well on screen. The cinematography by MN Bal Reddy is the only technical aspect that needs appreciation.

Shravan Bharadwaj is one of the noted music directors in the industry. But, his music for the film is unimpressive just like the story. Editor KSR could have chopped off many unnecessary scenes in both halves. Production values are just fine.

On the whole, Popcorn remains a silly and boring fare even though it has decent performances from the lead pair. The story and screenplay are the major drawbacks of the film and they made the film a below-par film. You can skip the flick this weekend.

Popcorn OTT Release Date : Popcorn is a drama thriller starring Sai Ronak and Avika Gor as the main leads recently the film’s trailer launch event was held in Annapurna Studios and Akkineni Nagarjuna attended as chief guest. The film is a drama thriller that happened in one location, however, the film is all set to hit the screens on February 10, 2023. Telugu films have been doing well in recent times be it big films or small films and in recent times some small films praised their storytelling within the limits, and Popcorn seems like such a movie that will be going to impress all sections of the audience.

Popcorn is directed by Murali Gandham and Produced by Bogedndra Gupta, however, Akkineni Nagarjuna was impressed with the trailer and said that holding the audience’s attention with this kind of film is not easy but let’s hope the film does well.
