‘Family Star’ Public Review; Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur Fail To Impress
April 5, 2024 Daita Dasgupta Entertainment , Movie Reviews , South Indian Movies 0
Telugu film ‘Family Star’ starring Vijay Deverakonda and Mrinal Thakur was released on April 5, 2024. The film is produced by Dilraju and Shirish under the banner of Sri Venkateshwara Creations and directed by Parasuram.
Vijay Deverakonda and Parasuram have earlier given a massive hit with their film “Geetha Govindam.” Hence, there has been a lot of buzz regarding the release of “Family Star” amongst the audience.
Public response
Plot of ‘Family Star’
The film’s official synopsis read – “The highs and lows of family relationships in an Indian middle-class family. The life of Govardhan, who wants to achieve greatness in life but has to navigate through a myriad of relationship/trust/ego issues.”
The film features Vijay Deverakonda as the ideal family guy ready to put his life at stake to keep his family out of harm’s way.
The audience is fascinated at this avatar of Vijay, who does housework and takes care of kids, but at the same time, is strong and takes pride in sharing responsibilities with his wife, shedding off his male ego of restricting his duties only to monetary requirements and official work.
“Vijay Deverakonda’s ‘Family Star’ glimpse is proof that he’s not just an actor but a phenomenon. His charisma and mass appeal are unparalleled. This movie promises a blend of class and mass like never before”, wrote one fan.
Actors Mrunal Thakur and Vijay share on-screen space for the first time. This film marks the third installment in the Telugu film industry after Sita Ramam(2022) and Hi Nanna(2023).
Vijay’s movie release date coincides with his rumored girlfriend Rashmika Mandanna.
Vijay took part in a kitty party with other senior actresses as a part of the film’s promotion where he was asked whether the release date of his film had to do with anything related to Rashmika’s birthday.
Vijay smiled and replied – “Yes, it’s Rashmika’s birthday. I think it will be lucky for us.” This further stoked Vijay’s alleged romantic relationship with Actress Rashmika Mandanna. It is also said that the duo are expected to get married soon. However, the two have them have kept mum about the allegations.
‘Family Star’ releases on April 5, 2024.

Leo Movie Review: Violent But Not Brilliant
Movie: Leo Rating: 2.5/5 Banner: Seven Screen Studio Cast: Thalapathy Vijay, Sanjay Dutt, Trisha, Arjun, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, Mansoor Ali Khan, Priya Anand, and others Dialogues: Ratnakumar Music: Anirudh Ravichander DOP: Manoj Paramahamsa Action: Anbariv Editor: Philomin Raj Art: N. Sathees Kumar Producer: Lalit Kumar Written & Directed by: Lokesh Kanagaraj Release Date: Oct 19, 2023
Lokesh Kanagaraju is the most happening director in the Tamil film industry now. His previous film "Vikram" set numerous records. It's no surprise that his second collaboration with Thalapathy Vijay generated a lot of hype. Among this weekend's releases, "Leo" has generated the most advance sales in both India and abroad.
Is the movie really worth all the hype? Let us find out.
Story: Parthiban (Vijay) lives in Himachal Pradesh with his wife (Trisha) and two children. In a little town, he owns a coffee shop. When a band of rowdies misbehaves at his coffee shop one day, Parthiban kills them to protect his daughter.
Clearly agitated by his violent side, Parthiban works hard to get out of this incident. Furthermore, the arrival of Antony Das (Sanjay Dutt) to his place, claiming to be Parthiban's father, complicates matters. Antony Das further says that Parthiban is Leo Das who is concealing his true identity.
Is Leo actually Parthiban or Antony Das's son?
Artistes’ Performances: Vijay has given an excellent performance. Accepting the role of father to a teen son and a pre-teen daughter without any traditional duets is a significant step for Vijay as a star and actor. He played the guy in his 40s throughout and is fantastic in emotional outburst sequences.
Sanjay Dutt does a neat job though his role lacks strength. Arjun Sarja's role is likewise subpar. Trisha's portrayal of a wife who is suspicious of her husband's history is good.
Technical Excellence: Anbariv, the action choreographer team, has proven themselves yet again. The café fight in the first half and the chase action in the second half are expertly handled.
Anirudh Ravichander's background score is once again enthralling.
The cinematography by Manoj Paramhamsa is superb. Technically, the film is of the highest calibre.
Highlights: Action stunts Couple of episodes
Drawback: Repetitiveness of Lokesh’s past films Excessive violence Lack of strong conflict
Analysis The plot of "Leo" is reminiscent of many Indian films, as many of them were inspired by the Hollywood film "A History of Violence." At the start of this film, director Lokesh Kanagarj stated that the film is also inspired by that Hollywood action drama.
So, for visual appeal, filmmaker Lokesh Kangaraj selected Himachal Pradesh's snowy backdrop (really shot on location in Kashmir). This has contributed to the film's freshness in the beginning portions.
When it comes to the story, screenplay, and scenes, everything falls flat. Only three key episodes occur in the first half: Vijay's struggle with a Hyna, Vijay's family life, and an attack at Café. The second half contains three more episodes as well as three prolonged action blocks. Action sequences dominate both halves of the film. So the never-ending violence gets monotonous.
Even the supposed twist involving an actress in the second half has little impact. It lacks emotional resonance. The ultimate confrontation between Arjun Sarja and Vijay is utterly ridiculous.
The much-touted LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe) creates the impression that the director is simply repeating himself. The Napoleon figure from "Khaidi" reappears. A character from "Vikram" also makes an appearance. But they don’t add much excitement.
As previously stated, what succeeds in the film are a couple of action sequences and Vijay's acting. The flashback sequences and the badly constructed characters detract from the proceedings.
Despite the extreme violence and heavy score, "Vikram" and "Khaidi" had genuine exhilarating moments and were mainly compelling. In this case, it is entirely dependent on technical prowess and Vijay's stardom.
However, despite encountering numerous fluctuations, it possesses aspects that resonate with the younger audience, owing to its action sequences, atmosphere, and modern approach to filmmaking.
Bottom line: Repetitive

Youthful entertainer Mad, starring Narne Nithin, Ram Nithin, and Sangeeth Shobhan, has created a decent buzz with its promotional material. The film is directed by Kalyan Shankar. We have been to the paid premiers of Mad, and let’s see how the film is.
MAD is about three happy-go-lucky guys: Manoj (Ram Nithin), Ashok (Narne Nithin), and Damodhar (Sangeeth Shoban) studying in an engineering college. They kill time by being involved in petty fights in college. Manoj falls for Shruthi (Gouri Priya), while Jenni (Ananthika) loves Ashok. Damodhar is the kind of guy who isn’t interested in relationships, but things change when a girl named Vennela starts calling him daily. The rest of the film showcases the college experiences of these three friends.
Plus Points:
To begin with, the film stays true to its title and succeeds in delivering slapstick comedy with plenty of one-liners. College dramas are always refreshing to watch, and Mad will surely remind you of your college memories. The characters are relatable and amusing. The focus was on providing non-stop humor, and most of the jokes landed well. A few sequences are superbly designed, and they will bring the hall down.
This wacky ride wouldn’t have been possible without the presence of Sangeeth Shobhan, Ram Nithin, Narne Nithin, and Vishnu Oi. Particularly, Sangeeth Shobhan and Vishnu Oi have hit it out of the park with their impeccable comedy timing. Sangeeth Shobhan’s expressions during the phone conversations are to die for. The young actor will go places if he chooses his films carefully.
Ram Nithin looked cool, and he has a very good screen presence. Narne Nithin, too, leaves an impact in his debut. There is a comic touch to his role at the end. The leading ladies, Sri Gouri Priya Reddy, Ananthika Sanilkumar, and Gopika Udyaan, have done their job pretty well.
Minus Points:
The songs aren’t that great and affect the flow to an extent. As stated by the makers, this is a madcap entertainer, and those who expect a proper story and emotions would surely be disappointed. The main twist that comes over the end is a bit predictable.
A few cuss words are intentionally placed to cater to the target audience, i.e., youth. However, they may be problematic for some sections of the audience. The fight sequence didn’t fit well into the narrative and seemed over the top. Some scenes will remind us of a few old films.
Technical Aspects:
Though the songs aren’t great, Bheems Ceciroleo did a good job with the background score. The cinematography by Shamdat and Dinesh Krishnan B is neat, and so are the production values. The film is fast-paced, and the editing team did a fine job.
Coming to the director, Kalyan Shankar, he handled the film with panache. As shown in the trailer, the film is filled with tongue-in-cheek humor. The dialogues are well written, and the one-liners work quite well. Despite a thin storyline, the director keeps the audience engaged with the situational humor.
On the whole, Mad delivers what it promises. The film has a good number of fun sequences that are aimed at youth. The situational comedy and one-liners work for the most part. Sangeeth Shobhan, Ram Nithin, Narne Nithin, and Vishnu Oi did an impressive job with their performances. But as stated earlier, the film has a very thin storyline. Also, one needs to keep the logic aside to enjoy the proceedings.

Telugu Movie Review: Rules Ranjann is an aggressively silly rom-com
I hung in with Rules Ranjann for longer than it deserved my goodwill. There is something so off-the-wall and silly about the movie’s presentation that an open viewer has no choice but to play along at first. Especially due to what appears to be a topical setting/subject matter – a naïve tech worker trying to navigate his way up the corporate latter – I figured it had to be aiming for exaggerated satire. Tired of abuse from his Hindi-speaking colleagues in Mumbai, Tirupati transplant Mano Ranjann (Kiran Abbavaram) makes a power-play to reign over the entire office – his boss (Annu Kapoor) included – as a sort of makeshift dictator. He’s the first in and the last out, and nothing will escape his watchful eye, leading him to be known as Rules Ranjann.
In what initially feels like an exaggerated allegory on today’s crumbling social standards in both the workplace and off-the-clock, Ranjann’s control-freak nature seeps outside his 9-to-5 and into his (uneventful) personal life. Mercifully, Tollywood’s penchant for original music and likely a lacking budget spare us the needle drop of Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” that would have been inevitable in a Hollywood version of this story. But there’s still plenty of the track’s salacious spirit on display. A questionable co-director of B-grade films (played by Vennela Kishore) moves in across the hall from Ranjann, bringing with him a new lay every night, undoubtedly luring them with the promise of a future starring role in one of his movies. Ranjann has no tolerance for this scandalous behavior, so he does what any aggrieved neighbor would do: finds a way to get his new hallmate kicked to the curb.
Up to this point, there’s something morbidly fun about watching Ranjann’s psychotic rule-following behavior: he displays the kind of mania we typically associate with silver-screen serial killers, but you’ve never seen more of a square than this guy. Lead Kiran Abbavaram is pretty good at embracing the spirit of being a puritan antihero, too; it suits him far better than the bumbling reluctant hero he played earlier this year in the critically-panned Meter . Even though everything about the film (including Abbavaram’s performance) is orchestrated in a maximally ridiculous way, I figured there was a method to this madness, that it was trying to say something substantial about individual attempts to thwart rebellion in the workplace. But just before the halfway point, Neha Shetty enters the picture as the love interest, at which point I quickly realized I was giving its ambitions far too much credit.
Putting aside the ballsiness (or perhaps just incompetence) of the decision to not introduce its love interest until just before intermission, it becomes pretty clear from this point on that Rules Ranjann ’s aims are no greater than those of the typical throwaway Telugu comedy. One day at the Metro station, Ranjann stumbles upon his mega-crush from college, Sana (Shetty), who doesn’t even know who he is. He finally gets up the courage to talk to her – after all, he is Rules Ranjann now (!) – which of course leads to a torrid 24-hour romance as he takes her around his faraway new home city. We know exactly where this is going. Suddenly, I felt like a fool for assuming Rules Ranjann was ever going to be a sophisticated satire on tech capitalism; the introduction of such a painfully conventional romance made clear that it was just another silly romantic comedy of modest ambitions from Tollywood. The over-the-top setup that had come before was just that: over-the-top – for stupid laughs, not intentionally exaggerated for the purposes of social commentary.
The movie doesn’t stop being aggressively dopey from there on out, but gone is any chance of this tone servicing something smarter or more subversive beneath the surface. Ranjann confesses to Sana that he pretty much watched every move she ever made in college – again, he has a lot of serial killer-ish attributes for a guy we’re supposed to sympathize with – and instead of being completely creeped out by this, she’s touched. This is a movie that thinks there’s a logical universe in which a woman would be charmed by a guy storing photos he covertly snapped of her on his phone.
But the film is even stupider when it comes to its plot: the interval cliffhanger is literally that Sana is late for her train home to Tirupati, and there isn’t enough time for Ranjann to clearly scream his phone number to her as it chugs away, so that they can meet up again. We’re supposed to buy this tragic separation – how could they possibly ever reunite now! – when just 20 minutes earlier, there’s a whole gag about how Ranjann tried to follow Sana hundreds of times on Instagram, but she blocked every new account he made. (Ah, yes, doesn’t that obsessive behavior just make you want him to get the girl!).
Needless to say, Ranjann spends the second half of the film enduring a series of mishaps as he tries to reunite with Sana and lock her down for marriage, each one sillier than the last. There are a few passable laughs along the way, but most land in a so-bad-it’s-good kind of way, especially when Ranjann inevitably must go back to Vennela Kishore’s evicted neighbor character for help. But the biggest problem with Ranjann’s entire romantic pursuit is that he’s not a character we want to root for at all, especially when it comes to his downright creepy obsession with Sana. He’s compelling as a sort of OCD antihero at the very beginning of the movie, but not as a likable ordinary guy going after his dream girl. As soon as the film asks for the audience’s genuine emotional investment, rather than our actively detached bemusement, it completely fails.
The production values are mostly competent and nothing more. There are four main songs – none of which are particularly memorable from a music or dance perspective, though the clear best is “Dhekho Mumbai,” ironically the one the producers saved last for release as a single. The production design, cinematography, and direction are all purely functional, while the editing leaves quite a bit of tightening to be desired, with the runtime a much-too-long 158 minutes.
While I cannot deny that there was a seed of something that I found compelling at the start of Rules Ranjann , it devolves into one of the more unpleasant romantic comedies of the year by the midpoint. After a poor first week at the box office, the film seems likely to be largely forgotten before long.

The fall guy, common sense media reviewers.
Gosling and Blunt star in stunt comedy; violence possible.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that The Fall Guy is loosely based on the 1980s TV series about Hollywood stunt performers. This version stars Ryan Gosling as Colt, an experienced stuntman who's eager to bow out of the exciting but often dangerous, career. Trouble brews when he's called to a film set for a job, only to find out that the star ( Aaron Taylor-Johnson ) is missing, and the first-time director ( Emily Blunt ) -- who also happens to be Colt's ex-girlfriend -- is frantically trying to save the film from being shut down. While laughs are an almost-sure thing here, mature content and thematic violence are possible, too. The Guy December 29, 2023 No Comments on Telugu Movie Review: Devil is a watchable, but entirely unoriginal British-Indian spy thriller Devil is such a transparent hybridization of James Bond and RRR that I'd be stunned if there wasn't a point (or more likely, many points) in the project's development where it was pitched exactly as such.

The Guy October 14, 2023 No Comments on Telugu Movie Review: Rules Ranjann is an aggressively silly rom-com I hung in with Rules Ranjann for longer than it deserved my goodwill. There is something so off-the-wall and silly about the movie's presentation that an open viewer has no choice but to play along at first.
