1. Is graduate school worth it?

Attending graduate school is a significant investment of time and money, but it’s practically required for teachers. And over time it is certainly worth the money. Around 47 percent of U.S. public school teachers hold a master’s degree.  According to the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), teachers with a master’s degree earn an average of $8,411 more each year . Capitalizing on this kind of financial aid can help you maximize your Return On Investment. Unlike student loans, scholarships are free financial aid that doesn’t need to be repaid.

Reach your teacher leader goals by applying for some of these scholarships for masters in education . This kind of financial aid is often ignored. Many aren’t aware this kind of financial aid exists or where to find it. There’s not a lot of incentive to advertise free financial aid, after all. Who is going to spend their own money to give somebody else’s money away? It’s important to remember that if you do have a student loan, or even multiple, there is a student loan forgiveness program for teachers. Federal student loans can be forgiven under certain circumstances.

2. How much do teachers make?

The answer to this depends on what kind of teacher you’re talking about. The median salary for early childhood education and elementary school teachers is $61,350. The median salary for secondary education/high school teachers is $61,820. The median salary for higher education teachers is $79,640. Private school teachers make far less on average than public school teachers. This is because most private schools do not hire union teachers and are thus able to underpay their faculty.

3. Why are graduate school scholarships important?

One of the main reasons graduate school scholarships are so important is that there is a bit less federal funding for graduate school. Most financial aid for graduate school comes from student loans, which often means incurring tens of thousands of dollars in additional debt. Graduate school scholarships help reduce that debt as much as possible. However, scholarships aren’t the only important financial aid tools to be aware of.

How to Pay for Your Education Graduate Degree Without Scholarships: Alternative Financial Aid Options

Not every scholarship application will be successful. If you miss out on the scholarship opportunities you hoped to get, don’t be too worried. There are other options to secure financial assistance as a student.

Student Loans

One of the most common forms of financial assistance for college students is loans. However, keep in mind that loans are not like grants or scholarships — you will be expected to pay back the lender with interest. Some popular loan options for graduate students include private loans, graduate PLUS loans, low-interest Stafford Loans.

Assistantships

Assistantships are a form of financial aid provided to graduate school students through part-time employment. The assistantship program requires that a student works as a teacher assistant, research assistant, or assistant to a college professor.

The teaching assistant program allows the student to work as a teacher in exchange for tuition remission or a stipend, whereas a research assistant will receive payment for assisting a professor with his or her research.

Tuition Reimbursement

Some employers now offer tuition reimbursement to help workers further their education and acquire new skills. Home Depot is one of the large corporations that provides this opportunity. Tuition reimbursement is not uniform, so each company has its own internal policy. Some offer up to 100 percent reimbursement, while others offer assistance to students on a case-by-case basis.

Work at Your University

Looking for a job at your school is another good way to offset your tuition costs. With a work-study program through your college, you will have the option to work on a part-time or full-time basis, and it should be easy to schedule around your coursework.

Should You Apply for Master’s of Education Scholarships?

Yes. Applying for scholarships is a great way to cut back on expenses and to avoid taking on too much debt while you’re still a student. Scholarships can be an amazing opportunity to work toward your specific career goals. It may take some time and energy to apply, but the rewards will be worth it in the long run.

Today’s education landscape needs leaders like you — dynamic educators and innovators committed to making sustainable and scalable change for all students by building on your professional experience in PreK–12 classrooms and districts; on college and university campuses; or in philanthropies, nonprofits, policy organizations, and ed-tech initiatives.

That’s why the Harvard Graduate School of Education launched an online Master's in Education Leadership, a two-year, part-time Ed.M. program with Higher Education and PreK-12 pathways specifically designed for working education professionals who bring at least seven years of relevant or transferrable work experience. The program will strengthen the invaluable skills you’ve already developed and give you the tools to propel yourself to new leadership opportunities and to even greater impact.

“Skilled leadership is essential to creating opportunity and overcoming the longstanding inequities that create barriers to success. At HGSE, we are committed to helping you meet today’s complex challenges by becoming the type of leader education needs.” Bridget Long Dean and Saris Professor of Education and Economics Harvard Graduate School of Education

A New Option for Experienced Educators

The online Master's in Education Leadership from HGSE consists of a diverse cohort of professionals like you — leaders who are advancing in their careers, and who bring important perspectives grounded in real-world challenges. Our program is conducted almost exclusively online — except for one short on-campus experience, where you'll meet your cohort in person and build community prior to the start of the first fall semester.

The program offers a distinctive Harvard experience — including deep engagement and interaction with Harvard faculty and talented peers, as well as a lifelong professional network — within an intentionally designed curriculum and robust opportunities for mentorship and coaching. The program is career-embedded — so you can immediately apply what you are learning, in real time, to the work you are doing on the ground.

Two Pathways: Higher Education and PreK–12

In the online Master’s in Education Leadership, you will choose between two Professional Pathways — Higher Education or PreK–12 — that align with the area of practice or the student community in which your work will make an impact. Students interested in advancing into senior leadership roles in colleges and universities, or in organizations that impact higher education, should study in the Higher Education Pathway . Students who want to do change-making work within the education ecosystem on behalf of students from early childhood to secondary education levels should select the PreK–12 Pathway .

Our prescribed curriculum is intentionally designed to meet your professional needs. It is anchored in both foundational knowledge and core competencies in education leadership related to the U.S. education system. You will also complete pathway-specific courses to advance your leadership in higher education or preK–12 education, as well as the Foundations courses. You will also have the opportunity to select courses from a small subset of electives. A minimum of 42 credits are required to graduate with an Ed.M. degree from HGSE.

The main elements of the curriculum are:

Foundations Courses

Throughout the two-year program, you will participate in Foundations courses in four areas: How People Learn, Leading Change, Evidence, and Equity and Opportunity. In these courses, you’ll build core skills central to the profession of education.

  • The online Ed.M. program commences with How People Learn, which runs online June–July and requires a time commitment of 10–15 hours per week.
  • You’ll participate in Equity and Opportunity, Evidence, and Leading Change throughout the two-year program.

Professional Pathways

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. Throughout the program, you will take both cross-pathway courses and pathway-specific courses. Cross-pathway courses will allow you to develop leadership skills that are important across sectors, as well as have discussions about how higher education and preK–12 can work more effectively together. Cross-pathway courses include:

  • Real Talk: The Art and Practice of Communications
  • Strategic Finance for Nonprofit Leaders

Pathway-specific courses are directed to the knowledge and skills important for leadership in the Pathway professional setting.

Elective Coursework

Students will have the opportunity to choose from a curated list of electives during the optional January terms, and during the fall and spring of their second year. Sample elective courses:

  • Law and Higher Education
  • Leading a School through Challenge and Crisis
  • Race, Equity, and Leadership
  • Teaching Exceptional Learners in Inclusive Classrooms
  • Why Can’t Higher Education Change?
  • Writing Workshop

Leadership Core Competencies

To help you manage, lead, and implement change in complex organizations, our curriculum explores the core leadership competencies that you'll need to elevate your skills, knowledge, and expertise, wherever you are in your career. Throughout your coursework, you will strengthen your ability to:

  • Lead change and think strategically
  • Foster productive organizational conditions
  • Navigate politics and practice political inclusion
  • Communicate effectively
  • Cultivate self-development and team professional development skills

Higher Education Pathway

All students will choose between the Higher Education and PreK–12 Pathways. The Higher Education Pathway prepares you to be a dynamic leader in a diverse range of postsecondary education contexts. It is designed to increase your knowledge of the practices, policies, processes, challenges, and opportunities in American postsecondary education. You will enhance your repertoire of strategies and management skills for tackling critical issues and introducing change — while preparing you to advance in your current career or move into other important leadership roles in higher education.

Sample courses for the Higher Education Pathway:

  • Creating the Future of American Postsecondary Education
  • Higher Education Leadership & Governance
  • Student Affairs in Higher Education: Theory-Driven Practices to Help Students Thrive

  • Colleges and universities, including in academic affairs, student affairs, admissions and enrollment management, advancement, and institutional research
  • Nonprofit education organizations
  • State and federal government agencies
  • Policy organizations focused on higher education

This award is open to students studying any form of visual and/or performing arts who write an essay expressing their views on creativity and courage. The French artist Henri Matisse once said, “another word for creativity is courage.” Artists can be loved and appreciated for their work, but they also have the potential to be criticized and rejected. Releasing art into the world involves overcoming fear and self-doubt. Even the most successful artists grapple with questions like “am I good enough?” or “will people like this?” If you’re a creative student who has ever struggled with these questions, we encourage you to apply for this scholarship! How to win scholarships for graduate students

As someone who has already gone through the process of earning your undergraduate degree, you probably have some experience with applying for scholarships. However, students applying for graduate scholarships would do well to emphasize a few different points to help ensure successful applications.

Graduate students typically have a more specific idea of their future career goals than undergraduate students. Make sure to emphasize this in your application and include all the particular things you hope to accomplish. If you have gained work experience between undergraduate and graduate school, frame your pursuits in this context. The more you demonstrate that you are working towards the plans you hope to further with your graduate degree, the more impactful your applications will be.

Writing strong applications

While your circumstances may have changed since undergraduate, the principles of writing a strong essay haven’t! We have a whole host of guides for writing strong scholarship essays and applications. That includes writing 250 word essays, 500 word essays, writing essays about yourself , or starting or finishing your essays. We also have a guide on writing a winning scholarship essay and can help you with finding local scholarships .

Graduate school funding sources

Students will generally pay for graduate school using a few different funding sources. The most common sources are private scholarships, need-based financial aid and grants, and university-specific scholarships.

Private graduate school scholarships

There some great private organizations that offer scholarships for students pursuing their masters or doctoral degrees! These scholarships support graduate students of all stripes including medical school students, law school students, business school students, masters students, and doctoral students!

Need-based financial aid for grad school

Need-based financial aid is another important way to pay for graduate school. For graduate school, need-based aid can include both grants (that don’t need to be repaid) and student loans (that do need to be repaid).

For need-based graduate school financial aid, students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA . This allows students to be considered for both need-based grants and federal student loans. Some colleges may also require additional forms, so always check with your specific graduate program for more details about their financial aid process.

Many colleges may also require students to submit the CSS Profile , which is a financial aid application that is hosted by the College Board. The CSS Profile is how students can access institutional financial aid from the universities.

University-specific merit scholarships

Many graduate schools will also offer university-specific scholarship opportunities. You should check with the graduate programs that you are applying for for more information about scholarship opportunities that you may be eligible for.

Some graduate students may qualify for fellowships or assistantships that allow them to gain valuable experience and also receive funding to pay for grad school.

Tips for paying for graduate school

Paying for graduate school has a few key differences from paying for undergraduate. Here are some tips to help you take advantage of every form of financial aid out there:

Look for scholarships and fellowships at your school

Check out your school’s website and reach out to the financial aid office to learn about scholarships and fellowships. They may refer you to institutional opportunities, or, since they are experts in the field, they may know about specific opportunities that suit your interests or demographics. You can’t go wrong by reaching out to the financial aid office for advice.

Apply for scholarships early and often

Remember, it’s never too early or late to apply for scholarships. Each opportunity has a different deadline, so you should be looking for opportunities regularly. Our scholarship finder is a great way to keep up with the latest opportunities. We will match you with vetted scholarships that automatically update as deadlines pass and new scholarships open.

Proofread your application essays!

Essays are one of the best ways to stand out from the crowd in a scholarship application! Check out our guides to writing about yourself , writing a 250 word essay , and writing a 500 word essay . We also have a guide to writing a winning scholarship essay . Even if you are a confident writer, it’s a good idea to check out these guides. Scholarship essays are written with a different intent than the essays you write in school.

Check with your employer about tuition reimbursement

An increasing number of employers now offer tuition reimbursement . With tuition reimbursement, your employer will help pay for your continued education. Since employers generally prefer hiring from within instead of hiring new employees, this works out for both employer and employee.

Some employers only offer opportunities to pursue education to advance your career at their company. But others, such as Starbucks , Chipotle , or Amazon , allow you to pursue different fields of education that you can use to get hired elsewhere.

Consider inexpensive online options

Online educational programs are becoming increasingly popular, especially after the pandemic. You can find a lot of reputable online graduate programs through Coursera . Schools offer a wide breadth of programs through Coursera, including iMBAs. There are also many scholarships available specifically for online students .

Consider certificate programs as an alternative

For some students, graduate school might not be a financial option at the moment. But there are still ways to advance your career through further education. College alternatives , such as certificate programs and coding bootcamps , can raise your earning potential with significantly less time and financial commitment.

Investigate graduate assistantships

Graduate assistantships , including teaching and research assistantships, are great opportunities to help pay for college while gaining firsthand experience in your field of study. As an added bonus, they help you to forge relationships with professors and other accomplished professionals in the field. Helping to teach undergraduate courses can help complement your graduate studies and decrease your loan debt!

Looking for college scholarships? Here are some places Greater Columbus students can apply

masters in education scholarships

Between the ever-increasing cost of college tuition, changes to this year's federal financial aid formulas and the anxiety caused by a much-delayed Free Application for Federal Student Aid rollout, paying for higher education might feel a little more stressful this year.

While there is so much outside of families' control, there's one big way that students can lower that sticker price: external scholarships.

Applying for external scholarships — meaning financial aid given by outside donors like high schools, clubs, nonprofits or religious organizations — can help give students "more buying power," said Kirsten Crotte, senior associate director of financial aid at Otterbein University.

"Students should be investing time in applying for external scholarships," Crotte said.

Searching for and applying to external scholarships can be time consuming, but Crotte said every little bit helps.

"If a student spent 10 hours applying to 10 scholarships and only got one for $1,000, that could feel discouraging," she said. "But that's still $100 an hour for your time spent."

Typically, many external scholarships have February application deadlines. But a number of organizations have adjusted their deadlines to match the pushed-back FAFSA rollout and give families more time to apply.

There are plenty of external scholarships available for Greater Columbus students. Here is a non-exhaustive list of where you can apply.

The Columbus Foundation

Not only does The Columbus Foundation have a database of more than 200 college scholarships , but it also has its own Universal Scholarship Application.

High school and college students who fill out the Universal Scholarship Application can automatically apply for more than 100 scholarships listed in the Foundation's online scholarship directory.

The Columbus Foundation extended its deadline for the Universal Scholarship Application to March 22 to better align with the FAFSA rollout.

According to its website, applicants can upload a PDF of their confirmation email that includes their estimated Student Aid Index in lieu of the FAFSA submission summary. If the SAI cannot be calculated, applicants can also upload a screenshot of the page on the FAFSA website showing that the form has been submitted and that their SAI cannot be calculated.

Applicants are also required to provide a short description of their financial need in the application.

Alumni funds

Already committed to a university? Congrats! Your fellow insert-school-mascot-here alumni might have a scholarship fund to help you get through school.

The Ohio State Alumni Club of Franklin County , for instance, has a scholarship funded by club members for local students who got accepted at any Ohio State campus and are committed to attend. (That deadline is March 1.)

Search your city or home county plus the name of your college into a search engine and see what is out there.

Your high school's alumni association is also a good place to look for external scholarships.

High school and college students can search for high school-specific alumni scholarships through organizations like The Delaware County Foundation , The Muskingum County Community Foundation , The Pickaway County Community Foundation and The Union County Foundation .

Eligible Columbus City Schools seniors with continuous enrollment in the district who are enrolling full-time at an accredited U.S. university or college can apply for I Know I Can's Founder's Scholarship .

Program-specific scholarships

If you've committed to a certain major or are interested in pursuing a field of study, there is likely a scholarship for you.

The Career & Technology Education Centers of Licking County has a roundup of outside scholarships for trade fields including, but not limited to, cosmetology, cybersecurity, massage therapy and HVAC.

The Ohio Farm Bureau has a number of scholarships available to students interested in studying agriculture and related fields. Franklin County's Farm Bureau, for instance, awards multiple scholarships totaling nearly $15,000 each year to students studying at accredited colleges and universities.

The Nationwide Foundation Scholarship Program is awarding 24 scholarships averaging $3,000 each this year to Franklin County who have attended Columbus State Community College and are enrolled full-time in a bachelor's degree program at one of five Ohio colleges. Applicants must be business majors.

State grants and scholarships

The Ohio Department of Higher Education i nvests in a number of scholarship programs to keep students in-state and lower the cost of attendance for Ohioans.

The Choose Ohio First Scholarship is designed to support Ohio students interested in STEM-related fields and to increase the number of STEM teachers. The Department of Higher Education provides funding to participating colleges and universities, which direct the money to students. Interested students can reach out to the point-person at their specific institution to apply .

The Grow Your Own Teacher Scholarship Program is designed to help school districts recruit their own students and staff to become teachers within the district. Scholarship recipients agree to teach for a minimum of four years at their home school district in exchange for a scholarship of up to $7,500/year for four years of college.

The Department of Higher Education also has several scholarships for caregivers of disabled Ohio veterans ; children of deceased or severely disabled Ohio veterans ; and the kin of peace officers, firefighters and certain other safety officers who are killed in the line-of-duty .

Playing cornhole can now get you a college scholarship. A coach tells you how

SSimon

Scott Simon

NPR's Scott Simon asks Dusty Thompson, coach of the Winthrop University Eagles cornhole team, about scholarships for team athletes.

SCOTT SIMON, HOST:

There's a new kind of student athlete in the making. Winthrop University in South Carolina announced this week it's awarding two scholarships to a couple of Colorado teenagers to play cornhole for the next school year. Cornhole? Yeah, the beanbag-tossing game. It's a historic time for the sport and for Dusty Thompson, who coaches the Winthrop University Eagles cornhole team. He joins us now. Coach, thanks very much for being with us.

DUSTY THOMPSON: Thank you for having me.

SIMON: What makes a great cornhole player?

THOMPSON: Somebody who's been around the game a long time, knows the game, knows the mental side of it 'cause it's not just about putting every bag in the hole. There's a lot of players that make this a lot more difficult to do that. So it can be a mental game in the long run. Some games can go 20 or 30 minutes, and some games can go five minutes. So a 20 or 30-minute game can mentally exhaust you.

SIMON: Coach Thompson, I say this with respect, but there are people who don't understand why cornhole should be considered a sport, or even why somebody would get mentally exhausted after half an hour.

THOMPSON: I get it. I completely get it. I hear it all the time. But the same thing goes for when baseball started. I mean, somebody picked up a stick, probably a broomstick, I don't know, maybe hit a rock and look what they turned it into. And it's an amazing sport now. The same thing with basketball - I believe it started with a peach basket. It started somewhere. What's wrong with cornhole starting, you know? Why not get it in college? Give these kids a chance to get a college degree that might not have had a chance, or give them a little bit of help through college for being such a good player. I think it's great. I mean, it's a great way for these kids to really get some good education.

SIMON: What can you tell us about these two young athletes who have the scholarships?

THOMPSON: Gavin Hamann and Jaxson Remmick, and when they're a team together, somebody come up with Team Hammick (ph). Yes, sir. So I've been talking to a lot of kids, but these were my two kids, my main focus that I wanted to go after first. These are the top kids in high school and college at the moment. These kids are coachable, well-mannered, well-behaved, handled themself on and off the court in a very professional atmosphere the way they do.

SIMON: And has Winthrop somehow become the college cornhole capital?

THOMPSON: Yes, sir, in my personal opinion. There might be other schools out there that are doing this, but none of them are D1. I'm not even sure if there are any other schools, but if they are, we are the first D1 school to ever offer anything for this. So it makes sense to have Winthrop doing it because we are the home of the world headquarters for the ACL.

SIMON: For the AC - is that the American Cornhole League?

THOMPSON: Yes, sir. So Winthrop is within walking distance of the campus - is walking distance to the headquarters. So why not have it here in Rock Hill? It just it just all goes together.

SIMON: I'm going to try and become a more intelligent and sensitive cornhole fan.

THOMPSON: Yes, sir.

SIMON: So I have to ask - I kind of know what to shout when there's a home run, right?

SIMON: Or a touchdown.

SIMON: What do I say when there's a good - what do we call it? - a cornhole toss?

THOMPSON: So what I'm going to say that you are relating to is if the bag goes straight in the hole, no slide, no nothing. That is considered an airmail.

SIMON: So do I go, hey, hey, an airmail?

THOMPSON: Yes, sir. Some of the greats do that. Some of them have their own slogan if - there's a guy, a professional player named Adam Hissner. If he hits an airmail and it's a big shot like that, he's got a fist pump he does every single time, and he yells out, boom, boom. It's a little on the crazy side, but that's what he does, and it's - he's stuck with it throughout all these years that he's been professional.

SIMON: You know, I'm going to be an Eagles fan, Winthrop Eagles.

THOMPSON: Yes, sir, I appreciate it. Come on, man. We'll take you any day.

SIMON: All right. Dusty Thompson, coach of the Winthrop University Eagles cornhole team. Thanks so much, coach.

THOMPSON: Yes, sir. You have a good day.

A Guide to Scholarships for International Students

Prospective international undergraduates can demonstrate leadership and writing skills to win U.S. university scholarships.

Experts recommend contacting a school's financial aid office and using scholarship search tools to find out about scholarships awarded by colleges and universities in the U.S.

Finding scholarships for international students may seem next to impossible, but they exist. As prospective undergraduate students research their options for studying in the U.S., they should be aware of what might land them a coveted scholarship award.

"A strong applicant will have demonstrated leadership and teamwork, strong letters of recommendation from teachers who know them and a consistently strong academic record which includes writing but also demonstrates follow-through and discipline," says Meredith Twombly, associate vice president of enrollment management at Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island.

Here are some things to know about scholarships for international students.

Schools Can Be Scholarship Gold Mines

Schools tend to be one of the best resources to find scholarships for international undergraduate students. Experts recommend contacting a school's financial aid office and using scholarship search tools like InternationalStudent.com to find out about scholarships awarded by colleges and universities in the U.S.

Applicants should look for scholarships open to all students rather than just U.S. citizens and permanent residents, as well as carefully review requirements, such as test scores, essays and additional materials like videos or letters of recommendation.

Numerous university-based scholarships are open to international undergraduate applicants. The Wien International Scholarship Program , for example, was established in 1958 at Brandeis University in Massachusetts and has brought more than 890 scholars from 115 countries to the school, says Julie Jette, a Brandeis spokeswoman. She says Wien Scholars "are committed leaders with a proven record of academic excellence and desire to effect positive change in their communities."

Evelyn Levinson, director of international admissions at American University in Washington, D.C., says the school has two endowed partial scholarships – one for an international student from Turkey and one for an international student from anywhere in Cyprus – that are available every few years rather than annually.

The school also offers partial merit scholarships based on academic excellence and rigor to first-year applicants, including international students, that range from $8,000 to $20,000 a year, she says.

The Presidential Scholarship offered by Clark University in Massachusetts is offered to domestic and international students and covers full tuition and on-campus room and board for all four years, regardless of financial need.

"Not all scholarships are listed on Common Application as many require a separate application, so do your research," says Presidential Scholarship recipient Maha Akbar, a Pakistani national who graduated in May 2020 from Clark with a B.A. in political science and minors in economics and business management.

Lynn A. Mosesso, retired former director of graduate and international recruitment and admissions at the University of Arkansas, says the school offers several scholarships to undergraduate international students. These include the New Arkansan Non-Resident Tuition Award Scholarship, which provides an annual award of $9,500 to $17,000 per year based on 30 hours of enrollment.

The school also offers several college and departmental scholarships, as well as scholarships to currently enrolled students who have excelled in their academic program or demonstrate financial need, Mosesso says.

Skills Can Boost Scholarship Chances

Strong leadership skills can make international students more competitive scholarship applicants, experts say.

"Being the head boy or captain of your school, leading the school paper or even setting up your own entrepreneurship club shows your leadership potential. In the end universities want to look at students who are going to be future leaders of the world and they want to see evidence of that from an early age," Karan Gupta, CEO of Karan Gupta Consulting in India, wrote in an email.

Passionate leaders with strong academic records on a scholarship application stand out, says Emily Roper-Doten, vice president of admissions and financial assistance at Clark. “And while we certainly value their intellectual curiosity, we also appreciate their desire and commitment to serve their community ,” she says.

Strong writing skills also help. Pakistani national Fareha Abid was the 2019 recipient of the Emerging Global Leader Scholarship offered by American University. Abid graduated in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in international studies with a concentration in justice, ethics and human rights with a focus on Europe and MENA regions, and a minor in international business with a focus on sustainable development and marketing. She says she sharpened her skills through writing-intensive, advanced-level courses as well as launching and running her high school's magazine.

The most critical part of a scholarship application, she says, is the personal statement , which allows admissions officers and scholarship committees to really get to know a student.

"That is where a certain degree of self-awareness and the skill of knowing how to tell your story comes in handy. My identity as a Pakistani girl, life experiences and being true to myself were a few of the things I highlighted," Abid says.

Scholarship essays level the playing field, experts say, giving students from various backgrounds and with different accomplishments an opportunity to win an award.

"If you have good writing skills you will be able to communicate strengths about your profile with ease," Gupta says. "This in turn will enhance your chances for scholarship."

Mistakes Can Work Against You

Not writing your own essay and waiting until the last minute to apply for scholarships are mistakes international students should avoid, experts say.

"Students should avoid the temptation of plagiarizing essays or even full sentences from the Internet or from past submitted essays," Gupta says.

That includes not using ChatGPT to write your scholarship essay, experts say. Gupta advises that international students be honest in what they write, especially about their achievements and extracurricular activities, and adds that scholarship committees "can very easily tell if an essay actually depicts a student's potential."

Levinson says students should carefully review, reread and edit scholarship essays and use spellcheck before submitting their essays to a university. International students should ask their school counselor, English teacher or EducationUSA adviser to read and review their essays before submission, she says. (EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State-supported network of advising centers that assist students interested in studying in the U.S.)

Ceasing to apply for additional scholarships after being awarded one or two is not a good idea , experts add, as students should maximize opportunities to get more money for college.

Mosesso says scholarships are highly competitive and students should give themselves plenty of time to prepare a strong application and communicate their goals for university study, career aspirations and why they decided to apply to a specific university.

Finally, Mosesso says, “Do not wait until the last minute to ask school counselors for a letter of recommendation."

The University of New Orleans College of Business Administration has been named in honor of Henry Bernstein. The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors approved the change on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2024.

The University of New Orleans College of Business Administration has been named in honor of Henry Bernstein, a generous benefactor of the University and former adjunct professor. The naming of the Henry Bernstein College of Business Administration was approved Thursday by the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System.   Bernstein’s philanthropic support for UNO started decades ago when he served as one of the founding members of the board of directors of the University of New Orleans Foundation. Bernstein was an attorney and partner at Milling, Benson & Woodward who specialized in taxation and corporate banking. After he retired from practicing law, he served as a gratis adjunct professor in the Department of Management, where he taught business law for 22 years.   Bernstein currently serves as a member of the campaign cabinet for Next is Now: The Campaign for the University of New Orleans , the University’s $50 million comprehensive capital campaign. His lifetime donations represent the largest gift of the campaign, which include the gifts of $3 million from Donald “Boysie” Bollinger to the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and $5 million from Dr. Robert A. Savoie to the College of Engineering.

“I have long been a big believer in, and supporter of, public education—and, particularly public higher education, as a means of providing educational and professional opportunities to those who might not otherwise have the chance to attend college, as well as to those who simply eschew the outrageous costs of many private educational institutions,” Bernstein said. “I have been particularly privileged to support the University of New Orleans, which has become such a vital part of the New Orleans community.

“I think that it is essential that a great city like New Orleans have and maintain a major local university like UNO to provide additional educational options to all of its residents, as well as to serve as a vehicle for attracting and maintaining a well-educated and highly trained group of graduates who can enhance the future prosperity and quality of life in New Orleans.”

Henry Bernstein funded the Annette Weinberg Bernstein Endowed Chair in University Management in memory of his mother. He also provided financial support for a professorship in African studies, the UNO Faculty Development Fund, the UNO Investiture Gala, the Henry Bernstein College of Business Administration Endowed Support Fund and a number of student scholarship funds, including those focused on first-generation college students.    “Henry Bernstein has always been a champion of our college through quiet philanthropy,” said Pam Kennett-Hensel, dean of the Henry Bernstein College of Business Administration. “I am honored that he has chosen to support us in such a generous manner and that his name will forever be linked to us. His gifts are elevating our college and enhancing the rigorous education we currently provide by supporting such initiatives as student programming, technology enhancements, facility upgrades, and research and continuing education support for faculty and staff.”

In 2012, the University of New Orleans awarded Bernstein an honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration in recognition of his professional, civic and philanthropic accomplishments. His generosity is not restricted to the University of New Orleans; he has supported a number of other New Orleans organizations.

“The long-term commitment Henry has made to the University of New Orleans is very special,” said Gary Solomon Sr., a UNO alumnus and campaign cabinet co-chair. “His gifts to the University and, specifically, the College of Business Administration are unbelievably generous. I have known Henry for years, and I can honestly say that he is the most caring and genuine man I have ever met.”

“Henry has been a quiet yet generous supporter of UNO for many years,” said Dr. Robert A. Savoie, a UNO alumnus and campaign cabinet co-chair. “That makes his gift all the more special. I am proud to call Henry a friend and to help recognize his generous support of UNO by naming the College of Business Administration in Henry's honor.”

A formal dedication ceremony for the college will take place in Kirschman Hall on April 9.

Academics win claim against Oxford University over ‘sham contracts’

Rebecca Abrams and Alice Jolly claimed they were denied important workplace rights for 15 years

Two academics who sued Oxford University for employing them on “sham contracts” as gig economy workers, have won their claim for employee status in a ruling that could have implications for other higher education workers on precarious contracts.

Rebecca Abrams and Alice Jolly, both respected authors, taught on Oxford’s prestigious creative writing course for 15 years, but were employed on fixed-term “personal services” contracts, which they claimed denied them important workplace rights.

After an employment tribunal hearing last month, the judge found in their favour, ruling that they were engaged on fixed-term contracts of employment and should therefore be classed as employees. Lawyers said a hearing would be held to assess the implications of the ruling.

Abrams welcomed the judgment and said she hoped it would prompt “an urgently needed reboot” in the way universities treat teachers. “Alice and I are skilled professionals teaching at one of the world’s top universities, yet we’ve been employed year after year on sham contracts that have denied us our employment rights and legal protections.

“With nearly 70% of its teaching staff on precarious contracts, Oxford is one of the worst offenders, but this is an issue that extends across UK higher education. Casualisation is a race to the bottom – bad for teachers, bad for students, and bad for universities.”

Abrams and Jolly had long argued their contracts were sham. According to their lawyers, Oxford said it would offer more appropriate contracts in a letter to the Society of Authors in April 2022. Two months later their contracts were not renewed.

“Both will seek a judgment that the failure to renew these contracts was an act of victimisation as result of their whistleblowing and trade union activity,” said a statement from Leigh Day solicitors, who represented the pair.

The University and College Union, which represents lecturers and other university staff, has campaigned on the issue of casualisation in higher education, taking extensive industrial action in recent years over insecure contracts, as well as pay and conditions.

“I simply cannot understand why the university has spent four years (at huge cost) trying to silence me and Rebecca when they knew all along that the contracts are a sham,” said Jolly. “This legal action is not about our personal circumstances. It is about the future of higher education and also about the status of writers who teach in universities.”

David Graham, co-founder of the litigation fund Law for Change, which supported the pair, said: “Our mission is to back legal actions that have a clear social benefit and the continuing erosion of lecturers’ employment rights in higher education institutions is an area Law for Change is particularly concerned about.

“This positive outcome for the claimants will not only secure better contract rights for lecturers at Oxford University but also help others working under exploitative contracts across the academic community.”

Ryan Bradshaw, a solicitor with Leigh Day, added: “This is an important case that highlights the need for higher education providers to review and rethink their treatment of precariously employed staff. It is not acceptable for these institutions to continue to seek to avoid their legal obligations. The gig economy has no place in our universities.”

In a separate dispute, a group claim brought by students against University College London, alleging breach of contract after Covid and industrial action disrupted their studies, is to proceed to court after talks aimed at finding a settlement ended without agreement last month.

A judge halted proceedings last July to allow more time for talks between the two sides but there has been no progress, so both sides have mutually agreed to lift the stay on high court proceedings. Meanwhile, thousands more claimants have joined the action, taking the total to around 5,000, according to lawyers.

An Oxford University spokesperson said: “We have been notified of the tribunal’s ruling on this preliminary hearing and are currently reviewing it.”

UCU general secretary Jo Grady added: “This is a huge win in the fight against gig economy working practices in higher education. Despite being one of the richest institutions in the world, the University of Oxford keeps thousands of academics on low-paid insecure contracts that leave staff impoverished.

“It’s completely unacceptable and it has to stop. This victory shows these contracts are often a sham and staff on them are entitled to the benefits of secure employment. Every employer in the sector now needs to pay attention to this ruling and begin working with UCU to move their employees onto secure contracts.”
