Spill Kit Training

spill kit presentation

What is it?

A spill kit presentation containing the following:

  • The impact of spillages and the legal context behind this
  • Examples of the different spill kits available on site and how to select the correct one to use for different substances
  • How to prevent a spillage from occurring or spreading
  • The steps to follow should a spillage occur
  • A short film to demonstrate an example of a spillage on site This is followed by a practical exercise on site that allows those who have undertaken the training to test what they have learnt and be prepared should a real spillage occur.

Why we use it?

  • The training informs operatives on site of the environmental and wellbeing impacts of spillages and how these can be reduced and contained.
  • It ensures that operatives are vigilant in their actions when working with substances that may cause harm, and are aware of the steps to follow should a spillage occur

Was it successful?

  • The training reduces the risk of a spillage that may cause harm to other people or the environment, this is because more operatives are made aware of the risk and how to reduce it
  • When the onsite practical exercise was undertaken, operatives involved were successfully able to identify the correct spill kit to use for the situation and eliminate the risk before it caused and harm to the environment or others.

The Next Steps

  • The Spill Kit Training will be repeated regularly across Lendlease sites to ensure that as many operatives are aware of the impact of spillages and how to minimise them as is possible
  • This further increases the safety on site and makes the projects more environmentally friendly.

What is a Spill Kit? Contents Checklist

The poor management of a spill can result in many health, environmental and financial consequences. Therefore, if you store, use or transport hazardous materials, it’s vital that you have the proper controls in place to manage spills.

As part of your controls, you might decide to use a spill kit. This article will explain what a spill kit is and the essential components of one, so you can ensure you have the proper equipment needed to control simple spills.

What is a Spill Kit?

Spills can have devastating impacts, so, it’s important that you prepare well for them. If a simple spill occurs while you are using, storing or transporting goods, having an appropriate spill kit, and the knowledge to use it effectively, can help you sort it quickly and cheaply.

There are four main types of spill kits that your business might use. Therefore, it’s important you select the right type depending on the substances you use, store or transport.

  • General spill kits , for the clean-up of non-aggressive or non-hazardous liquid spills.
  • Oil-only spill kits , for the clean-up of grease and oil-based liquids.
  • Chemical spill kits , for the clean-up of aggressive or hazardous liquids.
  • Anti-static spill kits , for the clean-up of highly flammable or explosive liquids.

There are also other types of spill kits used to contain specific substances that require more specialised equipment, such as mercury or body fluid spill kits.

You must also ensure that you select a spill kit that holds enough equipment to manage the size of the spill. If you store 120 L containers, having enough equipment to manage a 60 L spill will not be appropriate. Select your spill kit carefully to give yourself the best chance of clearing spills safely.

Spill Kit Contents Checklist

Your spill kit should contain:.

  • A wheelie bin or other bin. You must properly label your bin and ensure it’s easily accessible. Your wheelie bin must contain a full supply of the rest of your spill kit contents at all times .
  • Absorbent socks. These socks are flexible tubes made of absorbent material that you should place around the edges of a spill to contain it. Ensure you purchase socks that are compatible with the substances you might spill.
  • Absorbent cushions. You should also purchase compatible absorbent cushions. If a spill occurs, you should use them to catch any small runoffs and drag the liquid back to the body of the spill.
  • Absorbent pads.  You should place absorbent pads over the body of the spill to soak up excess liquid. Again, you should ensure you purchase compatible pads. For example, oil-only spill kit absorbent pads are designed to repel water. This makes them ideal for cleaning up oil spills on water bodies, but they would be ineffective if you were cleaning up a large volume of antifreeze.
  • Disposal bags and ties. Once you have soaked up the spill, you should collect the used absorbent materials and place them into appropriately labelled disposable bags. You must have enough disposable bags and ties to hold all the used absorbent materials. Remember that you  must  treat used absorbents as you would the substance before it’s been spilt and dispose of the waste appropriately.
  • Personal protective equipment. The final thing you should include in your spill kit is appropriate PPE, such as gloves and goggles. Check out our Personal Protective Equipment at Work: Health & Safety Guide for more information on PPE.

Remember that you should only use a spill kit to clean up simple spills.

If your spill is complex or has entered the system, you must notify the relevant authorities and request expert help. You must also refill your spill kit promptly after any spills occur, so you are always ready to tackle incidents.

What is a Spill Kit – Everything You Need to Know

what is a spill kit

There are many hazardous substances used in workplaces. If these substances are uncontrollably released, they can have devastating consequences for personnel, premises or the environment.

A Spill Kit can be used to control the hazardous substances should they spill or leak. But you need to know how to use them.

What is a Spill Kit?

A Spill Kit is a set of equipment that is designed to remove hazardous substances quickly and efficiently should they spill. They are intended to be used on small spills or leaks of a variety of substances.

The materials within a Spill Kit can be used to limit the spread of the substance so it can be neutralized and disposed of.

Spill Kit Training

Our Spill Kit Bodily Fluid Training course gives a thorough understanding of how to clean bodily fluids with or without a spill kit. It explores the related health risks of bodily fluid spillage, necessary equipment and control measures to protect employers, employees or anyone else while performing the task.

Contents of Spill Kits

What is a Spill Kit comprised of? Although different Spill Kits will comprise of specific materials to deal with specific hazards, the contents of kits are generally as follows:

  • A bin to dispose of contaminated materials
  • Safety goggles
  • Disposable gloves
  • Disposable waste bags
  • Labels, to indicate the contents of the waste bags
  • Caution tape
  • Absorbent socks, pads or pillows

Spill Kits should be inspected every six months to ensure they’re replenished and up to date.

What is the Primary Use for a Spill Kit?

Spill Kits are found in workplaces, wherever hazardous substances are present.

These can range from warehouses where they’re being stored, to laboratories where they’re being used. Places like mechanic’s garages and workshops should have them due to the amounts of diesel or petrol on site.

They can also be found in healthcare environments where there is a heightened risk of harm, and places like construction sites, commercial kitchens and restaurants.

What is the primary use for a Spill Kit in these workplaces? To neutralize the threat of harmful substances spreading to other areas.

How to Use a Spill Kit

All hazardous spills should be handled by personnel who are properly trained to do so, and who have the relevant equipment.

Steps for Using a Spill Kit

  • Call for medical help if anyone has been injured by the spill. Call for the fire brigade if there is a fire or the spill is large
  • Check you have enough material to deal with the size of the spill
  • Put up caution tape to warn people
  • Protect any floor drains with spill socks
  • Place absorbents onto the spill. Start on the outside of the spill and move towards the middle
  • Collect absorbents in a bag. Label bag as hazardous
  • Use extra caution in regards to shards of glass or chemical fumes
  • Decontaminate the area with disinfectant and spill pads
  • Collect the pads in the same labelled bag as before
  • Remove PPE and place in the bag. Seal with a twist tie
  • Make sure to replenish the kit

For more information regarding emergency response and spill control, you can visit the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.

Spill Kit Used For

Types of hazardous substances at work include:

  • Carcinogens
  • Corrosive chemicals
  • Toxic substances

Suppliers of products that contain hazardous substances must put hazard symbols on containers, which provide you with important safety information. These hazard symbols look like this:

hazard symbols of spill kit

Spill Kit up against

Specific types of hazardous substance you may come across include:

  • Alkaline substances
  • Oils, diesel and petrol products
  • Disinfectants
  • Bodily fluids

In addition to these product labels, employers must also provide information in the workplace. These include hazard symbols that can be placed on walls, machines and in all the areas where hazardous substances are handled. These symbols look like this:

hazard symbols

Hazardous substances range from things that can poison you, catch fire, or damage the respiratory system if breathed in. They can pose slipping hazards or even a threat to life.

For a wider look at hazard symbols, visit the European Commission website.

Types of Spill Kits

There are a variety of Spill Kits available depending on the substance.

Your workplace’s Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) risk assessment will identify potential hazards and prepare you for dealing with the spilled substances.

What are the Main Types of Spill Kit?

The main Spill Kits available are:

  • Biohazard and Laboratory
  • Oil and Fuel
  • Maintenance and Universal
  • Spill Kits for Vehicles
  • Mini Spill Kits
  • Mobile Spill Kits

Spill Kits in Healthcare

Within a healthcare setting, there are a number of specific Spill Kits utilized. The substances found in these settings could include bodily fluids and drugs.

Hospitals have high numbers of staff, visitors and patients who are at risk.

What are the main types of Spill Kit found in hospitals? These include:

  • Chemical Spill Kits
  • Body Fluid Spill Kit
  • Urine and Vomit Spill Kits
  • Chemotherapy Spill Kits
  • Blood Spill Kits
  • Biohazard Spill Kits

For a course on how to use Bodily Fluid Spill Kits , visit the Human Focus website.

Avoiding Consequences

When hazardous substances are spilled, they create a variety of consequences, particularly if they are not cleaned up appropriately.  These consequences are:

Exposure to hazardous substances can have negative health effects on anyone in the vicinity, and those in the wider area if the spill is allowed to spread.

Short-term health effects involve things like:

  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Physical illness
  • Chemical burns
  • Spills can also present a slipping hazard, which can lead to bruises and broken bones
  • Long-term effects involve serious illness such as cancer, or debilitating diseases

This can include direct costs, such as fines for breaches in environmental and health and safety legislation, and the cost of cleaning up the spill itself. As well as indirect costs, such as damage to an organization’s reputation, and the increased cost of insurance.

Environmental

If a spill gets into the wider environment it can have devastating effects on ecosystems, meaning it can destroy plants and wildlife. It can also impact things like groundwater, causing it to become unsafe for human consumption, or poison the land itself, making it unsafe or unable to produce crops.

This information should help you answer the question: what is a Spill Kit? A hazardous substance can cause considerable harm, but it can be dealt with if you have the means and the knowhow to counteract the threat of spillage.

For a course on how to clean hazardous substances, visit the Human Focus website.

Essential training insights from our experts

Spill kit training is essential for maintaining workplace safety and environmental protection. Targeted training ensures that employees can respond quickly and effectively to hazardous material spills, as a rapid response is critical in preventing accidents, injuries, and environmental damage. Hazchem offers a wide range of spill kits and safety equipment, and we can now provide training for you and your team to ensure that they are always used safely and competently.

What is a spill kit?

A spill kit is a collection of specialised tools and materials designed to respond to and manage spills of hazardous substances quickly and effectively. These kits are essential in industries where the handling and storage of potentially harmful materials are part of regular operations. The primary purpose of a spill kit is to contain, control, and clean up spills to minimise their impact on the environment, ensure workplace safety, and comply with regulatory requirements.

Key components typically found in a spill kit include:

  • Absorbent materials, such as pads, socks, pillows, or granular substances like absorbent powder, are included to soak up and contain spilt liquids.
  • Safety gear, including gloves, goggles, and sometimes aprons, to protect individuals responding to the spill from direct contact with hazardous substances.
  • Barriers or booms to help contain the spread of spilt liquids and prevent them from reaching sensitive areas.
  • Shovels, brooms, and other tools that aid in the physical cleanup of spilt materials.
  • Bags or containers for the proper disposal of used absorbents and contaminated materials.
  • Guidelines and instructions on using the kit effectively and safely during a spill response.

The specific contents of a spill kit can vary based on the type of hazardous materials used in a particular workplace and the potential risks associated with those materials. For example, a spill kit for oil-based spills might include hydrophobic (water-repelling) absorbents, while a spill kit for chemical spills may contain neutralising agents.

spill kit

Why do we need spill kit training?

Spill kit training is essential for employee safety, environmental protection, and overall risk management within a workplace. It empowers employees to take an active role in maintaining a safe and clean working environment.

Many industries are subject to regulations and standards regarding spill prevention and response. Proper training helps employees understand and comply with these regulations, avoiding legal issues and potential fines.

Proper spill response is critical for preventing environmental damage and protecting our nation’s waterways. According to the Wildlife Trust, elevated pollution levels endanger 10% of freshwater and wetland species , putting them at risk of extinction.

Quick and efficient response to a spill can significantly reduce the extent of damage. Employees trained in spill kit usage are more likely to contain the spill promptly, preventing it from spreading and causing further harm to people, property, or the environment.

Spill kit training with Hazchem

Hazchem is currently able to offer three levels of spill training : basic spill training, first responder training, and trainer training. Each course is carefully designed to ensure that your staff are fully equipped to deal with hazards in their workplace.

Basic Spill Training

Our entry-level course focuses on teaching the basics of spill prevention and clean-up. It’s designed for individuals and operatives employed in a shop or floor location who must respond to minor day-to-day spills and leaks. There’s a strong focus on the importance of having a simple, effective, response action plan, and each course can provide training for up to 45 people.

First Responder Training

For those searching for more comprehensive instruction, our First Responder Training targets those who act as first responders to a spillage incident or as members of a spill response team. You’ll also learn about the legislation surrounding spillages.

Trainer Training

For those who wish to guide others in the effective use of spill equipment. This in-depth course provides trainers with adequate subject knowledge to instruct others in spill prevention and resolution. Attendees will be expected to participate actively in the course and must prepare and make a 30-minute presentation.

What should I include in spill kit training?

Like any other safety or hazardous material program in place, an employer or safety manager will need to have a training program specifically focused on spill kits and spill response operations. These trainings will need to be documented and thorough as those who understand procedures are less likely to panic in an emergency. The training and plans put in place will largely be dependent on the scope of the facility and the possible risk a spill poses to the specific workplace. For instance, if a workplace carries a minimal amount of liquid, their training will be less in-depth than a waste water facility.

Training should begin with a focus on the liquid or chemical at hand. Employees need to be trained in hazard communication and be able to properly read a GHS label so in the case of a spill, they can understand what is at risk and what steps to take. Workers should be trained on the contents in a spill kit, how to properly use absorbents, and where in the facility they can find a spill kit. Although a spill kit often comes with directions included, training should still take place to ensure everyone will react quickly and calmly.

Videos, lectures, or group discussions should be used in training to illustrate the dangers of the chemicals and liquids that are being handled. Training should take place periodically to ensure workers are refreshed on procedures. Heightened awareness regarding spill kits and spill clean-up will combat workers becoming overly comfortable or cutting corners when it comes to spill kit maintenance and safety procedures. Another aspect of training should be focused on PPE. For personal protective equipment to be effective in case of spills, it must be donned and used properly. In accordance with OSHA standards, training should be documented and be ready to be presented to an OSHA inspector if needed.

The aim of this paper is to characterize the main properties and level of pollution of sealed soils in different land use zones of the Eastern administrative district (EAD) of Moscow. In 2016–2017 overall, 47 samples were taken from 35 soil pits. The list of soil properties analyzed included actual acidity, organic carbon content, particle-size distribution, and degree of salinity. Pollution of sealed soils with petroleum products (PPs), benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and heavy metals and metalloids (HMMs) was evaluated. Sealed soils are characterized by the medium organic matter content (2.24%), alkaline reaction (pH 8.0), sandy loamy texture, and the absence of soluble salts in the upper part of the profile. The pronounced technogenic anomalies of hydrocarbons are mainly formed in the sealed soils of the industrial and traffic land use zones. The mean content of BaP in the sealed soils is 56 times higher than that in the background soils, it exceeds MPC by 9.5 times. The concentrations of most HMMs in the sealed soils exceed the background level by two–four times. The most intense accumulation of As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Sn takes place in the industrial zone with the high degree of sealing. The hygienic standards for BaP and PPs contents approved in the Russian Federation in the sealed soils of EAO are exceeded by almost ten times. Maximum permissible concentrations are also exceeded for a large group of HMMs. The high contamination of the sealed soils can create dangerous ecological situation in the EAD if road covering will be removed and pollutants begin to migrate.

ESPN - CFP

ESPN has locked up rights to the College Football Playoff through the 2031-32 season, it was announced Tuesday.

ESPN, which has been the exclusive home of the CFP since its inception in 2015, will expand its current package for the final two years (through the 2025-26 season), adding all four of the new first-round games each year to ESPN’s existing New Year’s Six (now quarterfinals and semifinals) and the CFP National Championship rights in the new 12-team playoff that will launch this fall.

Under the expanded rights deal, which commences with the 2026-27 season, the College Football Playoff National Championship game will be broadcast on ABC in addition to ESPN’s megacast cable network presentation. In both the amended two-year agreement and new six-year extension, the CFP provides ESPN with the right to sublicense a select number of games.

The agreement marks ESPN’s second significant college sports media rights extension in 2024, following the eight-year deal with the NCAA announced in January valued at $920 million across multiple sports. That encompasses exclusive rights to 40 NCAA Championship events. ESPN now claims the exclusive domestic rights to every major college championship (excluding men’s basketball) as well as international rights to all major college championships.

“ESPN has worked very closely with the College Football Playoff over the past decade to build one of the most prominent events in American sports,” said ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro in a statement. “This agreement further solidifies ESPN as the home of college football, as well as the destination for the vast majority of major college championships for the next eight years.”

College football on ESPN accounts for the top 15 and more than 50 of the top 100 most-watched cable programs on record (since 1987), with eight of the top 10 directly from CFP Semifinals or National Championship games.
