Kindergarten Activities for October
I love October. It is my favorite month to make resources and I always find the cutest Halloween clip art. It officially starts to feel like fall in the south (if we are lucky.) I love all things October! I chose the best read-aloud books for these kindergarten activities for October.
October Book Selections
These books are fun and engaging! I think they are my favorite set in this series but I am biased because I love October!
Creepy Carrots
Peanut Butter and Brains
Creepy Pair of Underwear
October Lesson Plan Overview
This format makes planning kindergarten activities for October a breeze. First, there is an editable version that you can copy and paste or a script that you can read or even leave for a sub.
I have had the “big box curriculum” before and they are always missing something (several in fact.) They are never easy to read or implement. These plans are EASY to implement and make sense. Also, these included scripts are perfect for new teachers or sub plans!
Kindergarten Reading Routine
When your kindergarten lesson plans for reading are organized and structured into a routine, you will find that your class runs smoother. The students know what to expect each day and they will be much more successful! These lesson plans have a very clear outline which continues throughout the series and I have also included scripts which are GREAT for new teachers!
Here is the outline of each day of the week.
Monday- Read the story and focus on the characters and setting.
Tuesday- Read the story and focus on the vocabulary.
Wednesday- Read the story and focus on retelling the story and sequencing events.
Thursday- Focus on the problem and solution and/or text- dependent questions.
Friday- There is a writing craft and a kindergarten-friendly comprehension assessment.
If you love these plans check out my post all about kindergarten lesson plans for September here.

October Preschool Themes
October brings lots of opportunities for learning activities and themes. The fall season offers several natural elements to explore (pumpkins, leaves). Your class could explore Halloween; but even if you do not use that occasion, you can explore spiders and scarecrows and other aspects that have nothing to do with scary or imaginary themes. Use these preschool curriculum themes to explore this October.
FIRE SAFETY October is Fire Safety Month. During October, talk about firefighters and ways to be safe in a fire. You may want to expand to other safety and community helpers with this theme. LEAVES The leaves may begin to turn in October, a very visible sign that the seasons are changing. Even if your trees do not change to vibrant colors, you can talk about leaves and trees as a theme or emphasis. Help your preschoolers understand the world beyond their own experiences.
