Fordham University

4 year • New York, NY

fordham philosophy phd acceptance rate

Fordham University is a private institution that was founded in 1841. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 10,098 (fall 2022), its setting is urban, and the campus size is 93 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Fordham University's ranking in the 2024 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, #89. Its tuition and fees are $61,567.

At Fordham University, "New York is [your] campus" as the school’s website says. With campuses throughout New York City, students live and learn in the thick of an urban experience. The school’s original Bronx campus, Rose Hill, is in walking distance to the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Gardens and Little Italy. Today, Fordham has two more campuses: Lincoln Center, which is close to Central Park, and Westchester campus, which is in West Harrison, N.Y. Freshmen do not have to live on campus, but any student who is promised housing upon admittance to the school is guaranteed a room for four consecutive years. Students can travel between campuses on the school’s Ram Van, a burgundy shuttle that runs every half hour. The van makes enough trips, the school has calculated, that it’s covered a distance equivalent to traveling around the world 18.5 times a year. The Fordham Rams play in the NCAA Division I Atlantic 10 Conference. Fordham University, a Jesuit institution, does not have a Greek system.

Among Fordham’s graduate programs is the highly ranked Fordham School of Law , which is home to the first Fashion Law Institute in the country. Graduates and undergraduates alike may take advantage of the Louis Calder Center, a biological field station where environmental studies courses and research are conducted. A dozen graduate students a year can live in log cabins on the biological field station to be closer to their research. Notable alumni include NBA sportscaster Mike Breen, former U.S. Rep. Robert Giaimo of Connecticut and former U.S. Postmaster General John E. Potter.

Fordham University is a private Jesuit research university with an acceptance rate of 46%. The main campus in the Bronx is adjacent to the Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden. Fordham University has a 15-to-1  student/faculty ratio  and an average class size of 23. For its strengths in the liberal arts and sciences, the university was awarded a chapter of  Phi Beta Kappa .

The most popular undergraduate majors at Fordham are business administration, finance, and public accounting. In athletics, the Fordham Rams compete in the NCAA Division I  Atlantic 10 Conference  except for the football team which competes in the  Patriot League . Fordham offers both Early Decision and Early Action admissions options. If the university is definitely your first-choice school, Early Decision is an excellent way to demonstrate your interest and improve your chances of getting in.

Considering applying to Fordham? Here are the admissions statistics you should know, including average SAT/ACT scores and GPAs of admitted students.

Acceptance Rate

During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, Fordham University had an acceptance rate of 46%. This means that for every 100 students who applied, 46 students were admitted, making Fordham's admissions process competitive.

SAT Scores and Requirements

Fordham requires that all applicants submit either SAT or ACT scores. During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, 71% of admitted students submitted SAT scores.

This admissions data tells us that most of Fordham's admitted students fall within the top 20% nationally on the SAT. For the evidence-based reading and writing section, 50% of students admitted to Fordham University scored between 620 and 700, while 25% scored below 620 and 25% scored above 700. On the math section, 50% of admitted students scored between 630 and 730, while 25% scored below 630 and 25% scored above 730. Applicants with a composite SAT score of 1460 or higher will have particularly competitive chances at Fordham.

Requirements

Fordham University does not require the SAT writing section. Note that Fordham participates in the scorechoice program, which means that the admissions office will consider your highest score from each individual section across all SAT test dates. Fordham does not require SAT Subject tests but will consider the scores if submitted.

ACT Scores and Requirements

Fordham University requires that all applicants submit either SAT or ACT scores. During the 2018-19 admissions cycle, 39% of admitted students submitted ACT scores.

This admissions data tells us that most of Fordham's admitted students fall within the top 7% nationally on the ACT. The middle 50% of students admitted to Fordham received a composite ACT score between 30 and 33, while 25% scored above 33 and 25% scored below 30.

Fordham University does not require the ACT writing section. Unlike many universities, Fordham superscores ACT results; your highest subscores from multiple ACT sittings will be considered.

In 2019, the average high school GPA for incoming Fordham freshman was 3.75. This data suggests that most successful applicants to Fordham University have primarily A grades.

Self-Reported GPA/SAT/ACT Graph

The admissions data in the graph is self-reported by applicants to Fordham University. GPAs are unweighted. Find out how you compare to accepted students, see the real-time graph, and calculate your chances of getting in with a free Cappex account.

Admissions Chances

Fordham University, which accepts fewer than half of applicants, has a selective admissions process. However, Fordham has a holistic admissions process involving other factors beyond your grades and test scores. A strong application essay and glowing letters of recommendation can strengthen your application, as can participation in meaningful extracurricular activities and a rigorous course schedule . Students with particularly compelling stories or achievements can still receive serious consideration even if their test scores are outside of Fordham's average range.

In the graph above, the blue and green dots represent accepted students. You can see that the majority of successful applicants had high school GPAs of "A-" or higher, combined SAT scores of 1200 or higher (ERW+M), and ACT composite scores of 25 or better. Chances are best for students with "A" averages and SAT scores of 1300 or higher. Many students with grades and test scores that were on target for Fordham University did not get in. On the flip side, note that a few students were accepted with test scores and grades a little bit below the norm. This is because Fordham's admissions process is based on more than numerical data.

Exemptions to the English Language Requirement

Exemptions from this requirement can be requested by the applicant in her/his application, or can be made in writing by the applicant to  [email protected] . Exemptions are generally permitted for international applicants who:

  • are native English speakers from countries where English is an official language; and/or
  • have completed, within the past five years, at least two years of study at an undergraduate or graduate institution in the United States or in a country where English is the official language of instruction.

GSAS retains the right to request language evaluation from any applicant. The Fordham English Language Test (FELT), administered by Fordham’s Institute of  American Language and Culture (IALC) , may be required for those students whose English proficiency scores do not meet GSAS program requirements. Additional coursework may also be recommended by the IALC.

Students are permitted to register for two GSAS courses during the academic term in which they are completing any IALC-recommended coursework, which generally occurs during their first semester of study.

Please note: Tuition costs associated with the learning of English as a second language are the responsibility of the student and will not be covered by a GSAS tuition scholarship. GSAS merit-based tuition scholarships are not applicable to the costs of additional coursework recommended by the IALC.

Ok. 790Q 550V. Math (3.45) and Economics (3.85) Major. 3.89 Over Junior and Senior Yr. Economics Scholarship. Small quasi prestigious private school. Three glowing recommendations.

Should I get in? According to the website they a 58% acceptance rate with an average under grad gpa 3.21.

Undecided? Also have an MBA from Columbia and great work experience. Have already performed in numerous PhD qualified jobs. Scored in 99+% on GMAT.

Oh well...sucks....obviously they thought i was too old or not going to finish the program...but what a bunch of #%%.

Would be interested to hear from someone who did get in.

I thought fordham was practically unranked?

Yield protection?

there could be a whole bunch of out of work bankers applying but i doubt it. i wasn't worried about getting in. I was a little worried about getting funding. I actually went up to the school and visited just to demonstrate that i was really interested.

econ5875....when did you hear?

hey econ5875,

if you don't mind me asking, did you apply/get in any where else?

my take on this is: no school will want to accept unemployed wall-street bankers for a phd this year - an mba and financial employment until last year will hurt you, i guess.

I completely agree with this. I think perhaps Fordham, with its close proximity to the center of the financial crisis, is very weary of people who they suspect are just trying to dodge the job market for a bit and aren't really in it for the love of the field. Plus, I think any job sort of hurts your chances because they wonder how 'rusty' you are, not having studied full time in a while.

However, there are many other routes to take if you are seriously committed to the PhD.

Who were the recommendations from? It seems both of you had work experience and may have recommendations coming from outside academia.

My guess is that Fordham was swamped with ex-banker applications that were too similar to yours and they were looking for students more interested in academic research. That's my two cents, at least.

Okay, this is my first post. I got an acceptance letter (snail mail). They have put me in financial aid wait list (high priority) and even mention that "past experience has suggested that a position on a wait list often translates into an offer of financial aid". I go to a private college in central PA and have overall GPA 3.7 (econ 3.9) and am a math minor (taken courses up to Real Analysis). I have presented and published one paper, write newspaper columns (focusing on economic growth and policy) for a national newspaper published in my home country, and have a research assistant internship experience at a NGO in Washington, D.C. Btw, I have lower quant gre score than you guys have. I have also been accepted to three other schools and am waiting to hear from 5 more. Fordham is my safety school!

That being said, I will be requesting to defer admission and funding until fall of 2010, if possible at all. The reason for this is that I have been selected as Carnegie Junior Fellow for trade, equity and development program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. I plan to give gre again (improve on my quant score) and apply to schools again if the accepted schools refuse to defer the admission and funding offer for one year.

I only applied to Fordham. I was only interested in going to school in NYC. I also thought about applying to Columbia but I started too late and didn't think I would get in since LOR play such an important role and none of my LOR were from academics. Also I am pretty sure they would frown on the fact I haven't taken math in yrs.

My 2 cents of wisdom.

In the past the program has had both applicants coming from industry who did not intend to or were not able to graduate and applicants coming from industry with a pretty much clear idea for a dissertation (data, research method, etc.)

Obviously you are not of the second type. I know they are trying to not accept industry people of the first type.

You could have applied for a masters though....

that is part of why it is disconcerting. I obviously could excel in the program. I worked in a significant number of data intensive positions that were typically filled by PhDs. I also worked at the center of the debt markets and can provide a fairly insightful analysis of the current credit crisis which i am pretty sure the typical grad school student can't. I am not taking it personally, i knew there was going to be a serious concern about whether i would actually complete the program. I might not have completed the program but i could have brought a different prespective that should have been valuable in classroom discussion or academic research.

I am not that gung ho about a masters, i was only planning on attending the phd program if i recieved funding. It doesn't really make sense economically to pay to go to school, it would take 30 yrs to break even.

First: students can gain funding after an unfunded first year. This varies by school, but it's common so you don't really hear about people dropping $150k for a PhD.

Second: what do you mean by excelling in the program? You have to show that you're capable of passing comprehensive exams and producing a unique piece of research in five years. It's less about what you bring to the classroom and more about what you will produce during and after the program.

I also have to agree with econ here: your profile probably looked like a displaced financial sector worker. To a PhD program, that screams "high risk."

PhD Program

Requirements for the phd.

In order to be admitted to candidacy for the PhD, students complete the following requirements within six (6) semesters from beginning the PhD program.

  • Earn 45 credits, distributed as specified below;
  • Pass all required comprehensive exams;
  • Satisfy the logic requirement;
  • Complete the Dissertation Transition Seminar;
  • Hold pre-proposal meeting

At least 15 courses (45 credits) are required and are to be distributed as follows:

  • Proseminars During their first year of residency in the PhD program, all students are required to pass the Ethics Proseminar and a year-long proseminar covering selected issues that arise in metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of science (LEMMS Proseminar 1 & LEMMS Proseminar 2).
  • Be focused on an historical figure(s), movement(s), or period(s)
  • Approach its material with a primary learning goal to understand, interpret, reconstruct, and critically evaluate the texts. Whether a particular course satisfies these requirements, and whether it counts as Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, or Modern, will be determined by the Director of Graduate Studies in consultation with appropriate faculty.
  • Advanced Topical Courses Students must take two topically oriented courses at the 8000-level, one in a normative area and one in a non-normative area.
  • Taking PHIL-5001, Intermediate Logic, and earning a grade of B or higher;
  • Taking and passing an examination administered by the Department on the material covered in PHIL-5001; or
  • By receiving a final grade of B+ or higher in an equivalent or more advanced course at another institution. Under (i) above, with approval by the Director of Graduate Studies as well as the faculty who teach PHIL-5001, an equivalent or more advanced course at Georgetown may be substituted for PHIL-5001. Under (iii) above, the Director of Graduate Studies a well as the faculty who teach PHIL-5001 must approve the proposal to certify a course from another institution as equivalent to or more advanced than PHIL-5001. Students who fail to pass the Logic requirement during their first year in the program may have one further opportunity to pass the requirement.
  • 4000–4999 Level Courses No more than one fifth (⅕) of the credits required for one’s degree may be earned in courses below the 5000-level. Courses below the 4000-level may not be taken for graduate credit

Timeline for the Ph.D. Program

The timeline below assumes that students are on financial aid. Those who are not should consult with the Director of Graduate Studies and develop a personalized plan of study that is realistic given the student’s other commitments. Additionally, this timeline applies (only) to students who matriculated in the Ph.D. program in or after Fall 2018. Finally, there are variations on this pattern in virtue of alternative funding plans (special or outside fellowships, research assistantships tied to faculty grants) or advanced standing.

  • You will take four courses per semester and so complete 8 of the required 15 courses (24 of the required 45 credits).
  • Complete eight (8) courses or 24 credits, including the two Proseminars (Ethics and the year-long LEMMS Proseminar); two comprehensive examinations based on the Ethics and LEMMS Proseminars; and the Logic requirement (PHIL-551or its equivalent and PHIL-350 if needed). Students will have a non-service Fellowship during Year 1 (see IV.A.2 below).
  • Participate in the non-credit First-Year Seminar, an informal seminar where you will learn about the department’s expectations for graduate students and how to navigate life as a grad student.
  • Financial aid : first-year students on financial aid have a non-service “fellowship” year. This means that they are supported to devote themselves full-time to their coursework.
  • You will take three courses per semester, and so complete an additional 6 of the required 15 courses (18 of the required 45 credits), for a running total of 14 of the 15 required courses (42 of the required 45 credits).
  • Course selection is at your discretion, but you must have a plan to satisfy the requirements in the history of philosophy and the two required systematic courses at the 500+ level, one in normative philosophy, and one in non-normative philosophy. You should consult with the DGS on this plan.
  • Financial aid : the second year in the program is a service stipend year. This typically entails serving as a Teaching Assistant for a large introductory course in both semesters. You will be responsible for leading two weekly discussion sections of 22–25 students each, grading your students’ work, holding office hours, attending the course plenary lectures, and other duties as assigned.
  • Complete your final course, ensuring that all coursework requirements for the Ph.D. have been completed.
  • Participate in the non-credit Third-Year Seminar, where you will begin to think about your dissertation proposal with fellow third-year students, the leader of the seminar, and perhaps with other faculty.
  • You must hold a “pre-proposal” or dissertation organization meeting by the end of the third year. In this meeting, you will plan a path toward a formal dissertation proposal with a proposed dissertation committee and mentor.
  • Financial aid : service responsibilities resemble those of second-year students, with the additional possibility of serving as a teaching assistant for PHIL-099, Political and Social Thought, the introductory philosophy course for first-year students in the School of Foreign Service. (You may apply for this position during the second year in the program. Three students are chosen each year. The position comes with summer preparation and a summer stipend.)
  • You must defend a formal dissertation proposal by the end of the fall semester of the fourth year (your seventh semester in the program). This requires writing a formal proposal according to the regulations of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and defending that proposal in a formal oral defense. Students who do not pass the oral defense may try a second (and final) time during their eighth semester in the program.
  • Financial aid : during your fourth year, you will begin to teach your own courses as an instructor of record (a “Teaching Associate”). You will choose a Teaching Mentor, who along with the Department’s Coordinator of Teaching Associates will guide you through the process of designing and teaching courses. There is also substantial teacher training available through the University’s Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship.
  • Financial aid : your fifth year in the program will be a second non-service fellowship year. You will devote yourself entirely to writing your dissertation, with the goal of putting yourself in a position to complete and formally defend the dissertation during the sixth year
  • Financial aid : funding is not guaranteed for the sixth year, but it has usually been available to students who have made good progress through the program. If funded, you will teach again as a Teaching Associate, gaining additional valuable experience as an instructor.
  • You should defend your doctoral dissertation during this sixth year, as well as prepare for seeking post-doctoral employment.

Years Seven and Eight

  • You may, if needed, take a seventh year to complete and defend your dissertation, and it is permissible to apply for an eighth year in the program if necessary.
  • However , no financial aid is likely to be available for the seventh and eighth years.
