Persuasive Speech School Uniforms Japan

Beginning of Persuasive Speech

Persuasive Speech entitled: The Case for School Uniforms

Should students be required to wear a uniform to school? That is the question that has been raised for discussion here today.

Private schools have long been known for having school uniform policies. Now some public schools such as ours are deciding whether or not they want their students to wear a school uniform.

Some people argue that requiring students to dress a certain way takes away their sense of creativity and individuality. However, there are several strong arguments in favor of schools requiring school uniforms.

Persuasive Speech Supporting School Uniforms

Wearing a school uniform can encourage some students to take their responsibilities more seriously.

If they wear the same clothes to school that they wear when they go to the mall with their friends, they may have the same laid back attitude in both places.

Wearing "work clothes" to school can change the students' frame of mind and inspire a more serious attitude that is focused on study.

School uniforms can also lessen the negative effects of class status. In some schools you are only popular if you wear the latest fashions and trends.

Students are sometimes left out or even teased if they are unable or unwilling to pay to dress the way the popular students are dressing. Requiring students to wear a school uniform levels the playing field, by reducing the implied class status that is created when only certain students can buy the most expensive clothes.

Not only is teasing decreased, but violence can also be prevented at schools that have a required uniform.

Gang violence is becoming more prevalent at schools around the country. Sometimes fights can start over someone wearing the "wrong color" or gang symbol. There have even been instances of gang members sneaking into schools to recruit or harass students.

Required school uniforms can reduce fighting among students and prevent outsiders from being able to get into the school undetected.

Some opponents of school uniforms worry about the cost, but uniforms can actually cost less than other school clothes.

With regular clothes you usually buy a different outfit for each day of the week. You may even buy more than that. With a school uniform you can just purchase a few items, as you don't have to worry about wearing something different each day. You can also pass school uniforms down to family members, or find them on sale from other families.

There is a lot of controversy over whether or not school uniforms should be required. However, when you look at the facts you will see that there are many benefits to students all wearing the same thing to school.

Students may take school more seriously, teasing and violence can be decreased, and you may even save some money.

Decades ago, uniforms were mostly worn by students who went to private or parochial schools. But as local school boards have focused more on improving standardized test scores and campus safety, a growing number have begun requiring school uniforms — typically, a polo shirt of a particular color paired with navy or khaki pants, skirts or shorts. Nearly 22 percent of public schools in the United States required uniforms in 2015-16 — up from almost 12 percent in 1999-2000, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

Proponents argue that students will pay more attention to their classwork if they aren’t preoccupied with fashion, and that they’ll be better behaved. Meanwhile, school administrators say uniforms help eliminate gang-related styles and logos. They also make it easier to spot a stranger on campus.

Despite their reported benefits, mandatory uniforms are controversial because a lot of parents and students don’t like the idea of forcing children to dress alike, which they say suppresses freedom of expression. Some families complain about the financial burden of purchasing uniforms in addition to their kids’ other clothing. Years ago, parents also complained that it was difficult to find uniforms, but that ceased to be an issue after large chain stores like Target and Wal-Mart began selling them.

As public schools debate the merits of uniforms — some school boards have been bouncing the idea around for years — it’s important for journalists to know what the research says on this topic. School officials do not always consult academic research before they put a plan on the table.

To help journalists ground their reporting and fact-check claims, Journalist’s Resource has rounded up several academic studies worth reviewing. Reporters may also want to examine reports on uniform use from the NCES, which collects and reports data related to school uniforms, dress codes and book bags in public schools.

“School Discipline, School Uniforms and Academic Performance” Baumann, Chris; Krskova, Hana. International Journal of Educational Management , 2016. DOI: 10.1108/IJEM-09-2015-0118.

Summary: This study examines test scores and student behavior in the United States, Canada and 37 other countries to determine whether uniforms affect student discipline. The researchers found that the highest-performing students are the most disciplined. In addition, “for countries where students wear school uniforms, our study found that students listen significantly better, there are lower noise levels, and lower teaching waiting times with classes starting on time.”

“Dressed for Success? The Effect of School Uniforms on Student Achievement and Behavior” Gentile, Elizabetta; Imberman, Scott A. Journal of Urban Economics , 2012, Vol. 71. doi: 10.1016/j.jue.2011.10.002.

Abstract: “Uniform use in public schools is rising, but we know little about how they affect students. Using a unique dataset from a large urban school district in the southwest United States, we assess how uniforms affect behavior, achievement and other outcomes. Each school in the district determines adoption independently, providing variation over schools and time. By including student and school fixed-effects we find evidence that uniform adoption improves attendance in secondary grades, while in elementary schools they generate large increases in teacher retention.”

“Uniforms in the Middle School: Student Opinions, Discipline Data, and School Police Data” Sanchez, Jafeth E.; Yoxsimer, Andrew; Hill, George C. Journal of School Violence , 2012. DOI: 10.1080/15388220.2012.706873.

Summary: Researchers asked students at an urban middle school in Nevada what they thought of having to wear uniforms. Their public school had adopted a uniform policy after staff members became frustrated with the earlier dress code policy, which resulted in girls wearing revealing clothing and boys wearing shirts with inappropriate messages and images. The study’s main takeaway: The vast majority of students said they dislike uniforms, although some agreed there were benefits. “For example, in reference to gender, more than expected females than males indicated students treated them better with uniforms. Also, fewer females than males got detention for not wearing a uniform or for wearing a uniform inappropriately.”

“Are School Uniforms a Good Fit? Results from the ECLS-K and the NELS” Yeung, Ryan. Educational Policy , 2009, Vol. 23. doi: 10.1177/0895904808330170.

Abstract: “One of the most common proposals put forth for reform of the American system of education is to require school uniforms. Proponents argue that uniforms can make schools safer and also improve school attendance and increase student achievement. Opponents contend that uniforms have not been proven to work and may be an infringement on the freedom of speech of young people. Within an econometric framework, this study examines the effect of school uniforms on student achievement. It tackles methodological challenges through the use of a value-added functional form and the use of multiple data sets. The results do not suggest any significant association between school uniform policies and achievement. Although the results do not definitely support or reject either side of the uniform argument, they do strongly intimate that uniforms are not the solution to all of American education’s ills.”

“Effects of Student Uniforms on Attendance, Behavior Problems, Substance Use, and Academic Achievement” Brunsma, David L.; Rockquemore, Kerry A. The Journal of Educational Research , 1998, Vol. 92. doi: 10.1080/00220679809597575.

Abstract: “Mandatory uniform policies have been the focus of recent discourse on public school reform. Proponents of such reform measures emphasize the benefits of student uniforms on specific behavioral and academic outcomes. Tenth-grade data from The National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 was used to test empirically the claims made by uniform advocates. The findings indicate that student uniforms have no direct effect on substance use, behavioral problems, or attendance. Contrary to current discourse, the authors found a negative effect of uniforms on student academic achievement. Uniform policies may indirectly affect school environment and student outcomes by providing a visible and public symbol of commitment to school improvement and reform.”

“School Uniforms, Academic Achievement, and Uses of Research” Bodine, Ann. The Journal of Educational Research , 2003, Vol. 97. doi: 10.1080/00220670309597509.

Abstract: “School uniforms are being advocated for a range of social, educational, economic, and familial reasons. In 1998, The Journal of Educational Research (The JER) published an article by D. Brunsma and K. Rockquemore that claims that uniforms correlate negatively with academic achievement, but data presented in this article actually show positive correlation between uniforms and achievement for the total sample, and for all but 1 school sector. Examination of structure of argument reveals that the erroneous claim results from misleading use of sector analysis. Simultaneous with The JER article, and on the basis of the same National Education Longitudinal Study: 1988 database, an Educational Testing Service article reported that no correlation exists between uniforms and achievement. The two articles are contrasted in this study. The effect of new communication technology in amplifying political uses of academic research is discussed.”

“Public School Uniforms: Effect on Perceptions of Gang Presence, School Climate, and Student Self-Perceptions” Wade, Kathleen Kiley; Stafford, Mary E. Education and Urban Society , 2003, Vol. 35. doi: 10.1177/0013124503255002.

Abstract: “This study attempts to clarify the relationships between public school uniforms and some of their intended results: student self-worth and student and staff perceptions of gang presence and school climate. The instruments used in the study included a questionnaire on gang presence and identity, the National Association of School Principals Comprehensive Assessment of School Environments, and the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Children. Participants consisted of 415 urban public middle school students and 83 teachers. Findings indicate that, although perceptions did not vary for students across uniform policy, teachers from schools with uniform policies perceived lower levels of gang presence. Although the effect size was small, students from schools without uniforms reported higher self-perception scores than students from schools with uniform policies. Student and teacher perceptions of school climate did not vary across uniform policy.”

“The Effect of Uniforms on Nonuniform Apparel Expenditures” Norum, Pamela S.; Weagley, Robert O.; Norton, Marjorie J. Family & Consumer Sciences , 1998. doi: 10.1177/1077727X980263001.

Abstract: “The uniform industry has grown steadily the past 20 years with increased attention from employers trying to create a professional image among workers as well as school administrators considering uniforms to curtail school violence. Although an important part of human dress for centuries, uniforms have received little attention from researchers of the clothing market. This study examines the impact of uniform purchases on household expenditures for selected nonuniform apparel subcategories based on an economic model of conditional demand. Expenditure equations are estimated using the 1990-1991 Consumer Expenditure Survey. The results suggest that, on average, consumers do not substitute uniforms for other apparel purchases. Rather, uniforms and nonuniform apparel appear to be complements in consumers’ purchases, resulting in greater household expenditures on nonuniform apparel. These results are a first step in understanding the economic effect that uniform purchases, mandated by employers, schools, or others, have on household clothing expenditures.”

Introduction

School uniforms have long been a topic of discussion in educational settings. While some argue that they stifle individuality, others believe they offer numerous benefits to students, schools, and communities.

In this article, we will explore the importance of school uniforms and how they contribute to a positive learning environment. From promoting equality and inclusion to enhancing safety and security, school uniforms play a vital role in shaping a conducive educational atmosphere.

Benefits of School Uniforms

Benefits of School Uniforms

Promoting Equality and Inclusion

One of the key benefits of school uniforms is their ability to promote equality and inclusion among students. Regardless of their socio-economic background, all students are on equal footing when wearing the same uniform.

This eliminates the visible differences in clothing brands or styles, reducing the potential for discrimination based on attire. By fostering a sense of unity, school uniforms encourage students to focus on their studies and personal growth rather than material possessions.

Fostering a Sense of Belonging and School Pride

Wearing a school uniform instills a sense of belonging and pride in students. When everyone is dressed in the same attire, it creates a feeling of camaraderie and solidarity. Students develop a shared identity, which strengthens the bond within the school community. This sense of belonging can contribute to higher levels of student engagement, school spirit, and overall satisfaction with their educational experience.

Enhancing Safety and Security

School uniforms also play a crucial role in enhancing safety and security within educational institutions. With a standardized dress code, it becomes easier for staff and security personnel to identify individuals who don’t belong on campus.

This helps maintain a secure environment and reduces the risk of unauthorized individuals entering the premises. Additionally, uniforms can help differentiate students from outsiders during field trips or other off-campus activities, ensuring student safety at all times.

Improved Discipline and Focus

Another advantage of school uniforms is their positive impact on discipline and focus. When students are required to wear uniforms, it establishes clear guidelines and expectations for their behavior and appearance.

Uniforms create a structured environment where students understand the importance of following rules and regulations. This, in turn, promotes discipline, minimizes distractions, and helps students stay focused on their academic pursuits.

Academic Performance and Concentration

School uniforms have been associated with improved academic performance and concentration among students. By eliminating the pressure to dress fashionably or keep up with the latest trends, uniforms remove potential distractions in the classroom. Students can devote their energy and attention to learning, leading to enhanced concentration and academic achievement. The standardized appearance also encourages a professional mindset, preparing students for future endeavors where appropriate attire is expected.

Social and Emotional Benefits

School uniforms offer various social and emotional benefits to students. When everyone is dressed uniformly, it reduces the emphasis on outward appearances and levels the playing field.

Students are less likely to judge or discriminate against each other based on their clothing choices, fostering a more inclusive and accepting atmosphere. This can lead to stronger peer relationships, improved social interactions, and a reduction in social stratification within the student body.

Moreover, school uniforms help alleviate the pressure and anxiety associated with deciding what to wear each day. By eliminating the need to constantly think about outfits and fashion trends, students can focus their energy on building meaningful relationships, participating in extracurricular activities, and exploring their interests. This, in turn, contributes to a healthier emotional well-being and overall happiness.

Addressing Peer Pressure and Bullying

Peer pressure and bullying are significant concerns in schools, but school uniforms can help address these issues. When all students are dressed uniformly, there is less room for comparison or judgment based on clothing choices.

This reduces the likelihood of students being singled out or bullied for their attire, as everyone is on an equal footing. School uniforms create a sense of unity, making it easier for students to focus on their studies and personal growth without the fear of being targeted for their clothing.

Encouraging Individuality and Expression

Contrary to popular belief, school uniforms can still allow for individuality and self-expression. While uniforms provide a standardized appearance, they often include opportunities for personalization.

Accessories such as ties, scarves, or badges can allow students to showcase their unique personalities within the framework of the uniform. Additionally, school activities and events can provide opportunities for students to express themselves creatively through themes or designated dress-up days.

Building a Positive Learning Environment

The presence of school uniforms contributes to the creation of a positive learning environment. When students are dressed uniformly, it fosters a sense of unity and equality. It eliminates the distractions and divisions that can arise from varying styles or trends in clothing.

This allows students and teachers to focus on the core purpose of education: learning and personal growth. In a positive environment, students feel supported, valued, and motivated to succeed academically.

Schools, parents, and students frequently clash over the issue of regulating what students may and may not wear to school. These controversies often pegged to the culture war of the moment touch on everything from gender and sexuality to politics, race, and religion. In 2021, a group of about 50 students in Georgia protested their middle school’s dress code for being discriminatory against BIPOC girls by wearing t-shirts every Friday emblazoned with the words “sexist,” “racist,” and “classist.” In 2022, a fight between students, staff, and police officers broke out at a Pennsylvania high school when hats and hoodies were banned as part of a revision by the school board to the school’s dress code. And in 2023, two Michigan middle schoolers, via their mother, sued their school district after they were banned from wearing “Let’s Go Brandon” sweatshirts.

Are school uniforms the best solution to this contentious debate? If every student is wearing the same outfit, will a host of campus problems be solved? Researchers are divided over how much of an impact — if any — dress policies have on student learning. There are multiple studies with conflicting conclusions, plus books such as 2018’s The Debate About School Uniforms , but the argument wears on, with a list of pros and cons on each side.

Why do some public schools have uniforms?

In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy.

President Clinton provided momentum to the school uniform movement when he said in his 1996 State of the Union speech, “If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms.”

The pros and cons of school uniforms

According to proponents, school uniforms:.

  • Help prevent gangs from forming on campus

  • Encourage discipline

  • Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes

  • Help identify intruders in the school

  • Diminish economic and social barriers between students

  • Increase a sense of belonging and school pride

  • Improve attendance

Opponents contend that school uniforms:

  • Violate a student’s right to freedom of expression

  • Are simply a Band-Aid on the issue of school violence

  • Make students a target for bullies from other schools

  • Are a financial burden for poor families

  • Are an unfair additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education

  • Are difficult to enforce in public schools

Uniforms vs. dress codes

Schools and districts vary widely in how closely they adhere to the concept of uniformity.

What’s a dress code?

Generally, dress codes are more relaxed than uniform policies. Sometimes, however, dress codes are quite strict with requirements that are potentially viewed as biased based on race or gender. In 2020, two Black male students in Texas, cousins with West Indian heritage, were suspended for wearing dreadlocks in supposed violation of the district’s hair and grooming policy, part of the dress code. The elder one, a senior, was told he couldn’t attend prom or graduation until his dreads were trimmed. In 2022, girls on the track team at an Albany, NY high school were sent home for wearing sports bras at practice.

Uniforms are certainly easier for administrators to enforce than dress codes, largely because the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) can be depended upon to protect a student’s “right to express themselves.” The ACLU believes dress codes are often used to, “shame girls, force students to conform to gender stereotypes… punish students who wear political and countercultural messages. Such policies can be used as cover for racial discrimination… Dress codes can also infringe on a student’s religious rights…” To successfully enforce a dress code, insists the ACLU, the school must prove the student’s attire, “is disruptive to school activities.”

The ACLU’s dress code stance is regularly supported by federal courts , like the 2023 lower court ruling in North Carolina that ended a charter school decree that girls couldn’t wear pants to school. ACLU lawyers claimed this violated Title IX because the dress code “discriminated against female students by limiting their ability to fully participate in school activities, such as using the playground.” The U.S. Supreme Court later declined to take up a case challenging the lower court’s ruling.

Check with your school to see what the dress code is, as they can be fairly specific. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, for example, the dress code prohibits :

  • Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms that convey crude, vulgar, profane, violent, death-oriented, gang-related, sexually explicit, or sexually suggestive messages.
  • Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms advertising tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
  • Symbols, mottoes, words or acronyms identifying a student as a member of a secret or overtly antisocial group or gang or that identifies a student as a member of an organization that professes violence or hatred toward one’s fellow man.
  • Visible and permanent tattoos/brands incompatible with the standards set forth herein shall be covered to prohibit their display.
  • Excessively large or baggy clothes

What’s a uniform?

School uniforms worldwide can widely range from nondescript to bizarre. (Extreme examples from China, Australia, and the UK on this YouTube video ) Most public school outfits in the USA are quite casual, with a “ common type ” for boys often a polo shirt in a solid color, with pants in khaki, black, or navy blue. A girl’s uniform is often a skirt and a white buttoned-up shirt. Dress shoes are frequently required for both genders.

In the United States, low-income families spend an average of $249 on a child’s school uniform annually, far less than the typical Australian student’s $578. But still, the cost is sometimes viewed as unfair because public education is intended to be free, paid by tax dollars, not “a stress for families on lower incomes.” The ACLU believes that public schools should provide free school uniforms , because the expense is unconstitutional, and it increases wealth inequity.

What research says about school uniforms

In 2006, Virginia Draa, professor at Youngstown State University, reviewed the impact of school uniforms at 64 public high schools that had larger percentages of economically disadvantaged and minority students than other urban schools. Her conclusion surprised her: “I really went into this thinking uniforms don’t make a difference, but I came away seeing that they do… I was absolutely floored.” Her analysis determined that the schools with uniforms improved their students attendance, and graduation rates rose an average almost 11 percent.

In 2022, Ohio State University and University of Pennsylvania researchers reached a contrary opinion in their report titled “ School Uniforms and Students Behavior: Is There a Link? ” Their view was that, in general, evidence that school uniforms improve social skills in the students was “inconclusive.” The solitary praise they provided to uniform-wearing was noting there was “some indication that low-income students in schools that required uniforms demonstrated better school attendance than low-income students in schools that did not.”

What to believe? Jury is still out.

What do students think about uniforms?

A student discussion: pros and cons of uniforms

Editor’s note: This video is part of our high school milestones series about communication skills. The students in this video discuss the pros and cons of school uniforms.

A University of Nevada, Reno, survey of 1,848 middle school students, published in 2022, revealed that 90 percent did not like wearing a uniform to school . Only 30 percent believed the uniforms “might reduce discipline issues, a mere 17 percent thought the uniform helped them focus at school, 34 percent believed their school was safer due to the uniforms and 37 percent said, “I worry less about my appearance” due to the uniform requirement.”

An earlier study, also in Nevada, displayed similar unpopularity with newly instituted uniforms among middle school students. However, when the researchers looked into school discipline and local police records and compared them to the prior year’s data, discipline referrals were down 10 percent, there were 63 percent fewer police log reports, and incidences of graffiti, fights, and gang-related activity were all down.

It’s a big issue

A new trend is the mounting pressure to establish dress codes for teachers. Apparently, the same casual mindset toward revealing outfits is cropping up in the ranks of our teachers.

The debate over uniforms in public schools encompasses many larger issues than simply what children should wear to school. It touches on issues of school improvement, freedom of expression, and hot-button culture wars. It’s no wonder the debate rages on.

The Pros and Cons of School Uniforms for Students

Student Safety

Focus on education, attendance rates, discipline issues, dress code enforcement, cost for families, impact on self-esteem.

The debate over whether students should wear school uniforms has been going on for more than a decade. Some people argue that uniforms have a positive impact on the school environment by promoting inclusivity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Others fear that school uniforms prevent kids from expressing themselves through their clothing choices.

The research on school uniforms is often mixed. While some schools have found uniforms to be beneficial, other research has found that they have little effect. Some studies have even reached the conclusion that requiring school uniforms can be harmful for students.

Let's take a closer look at some of the potential benefits, as well as the challenges, of requiring students to wear uniforms.

Some people think that school uniforms can help make schools safer for kids. When Long Beach, CA, required all students in grades K–8 to wear uniforms, reports of assault and battery decreased by 34%.

Additionally, assault with a deadly weapon decreased by 50%, fighting incidents declined 51%, and sex offenses dropped by 74%. Possession of weapons dropped by 52%, possession of drugs went down 69%, and vandalism was lowered by 18%.

The Sparks Middle School in Nevada reported a decrease in gang activity after instituting a uniform policy. They also reported a drop in fights, graffiti, property damage, and battery. Overall, there was a 63% drop in police reports.

Other proponents of school uniforms report that it prevents students from concealing weapons under clothing. And some also believe intruders would be recognized faster, making the students and staff safer in the event someone from the community tries to enter the school.

Not all studies have found that uniforms reduce discipline issues, however. In fact, a peer-reviewed study found that school uniforms increased the average number of assaults by about 14 per year in the most violent schools.  The Miami-Dade County Public Schools Office of Education Evaluation and Management found that fights in middle schools nearly doubled within one year of making uniforms mandatory.

For many students, clothing can be a major source of stress. Not having certain brand name clothing or not wearing fashionable items could lead to feelings of insecurity.

Some people feel students are better able to concentrate on school when they all wear the same clothing. Researchers in Australia noted that students who wear uniforms had improved discipline and academic performance.

Not all studies have found that uniforms improve grades, however. In fact, at least one study found that school uniforms had a negative effect on achievement.

Kids may show up to school more often when they’re wearing uniforms. A study by researchers at the University of Houston found that the average attendance rate for girls in middle and high school increased by 0.3 to 0.4 percent after school uniforms became mandatory. A study by Youngstown State University also found that attendance rates increased and suspensions decreased once students began wearing uniforms.

Students may also be more likely to show up to school on time when they have to wear uniforms. If they don’t have to spend time choosing what to wear every morning, students are able to get out the door more quickly. This means fewer late arrivals.

Proponents of uniforms report that it can improve behavior in students. One school that found this to be true is the John Adams Middle School in Albuquerque, NM. When they mandated school uniforms, discipline referrals dropped from 1,565 in the first semester of the previous year to 405.

An Australian study also concluded that students wearing uniforms were more disciplined and they listened significantly better. Classes were also more likely to start on time.

Not all studies have found this, however. Some research has found that disciplinary issues and bullying didn’t decrease after instituting a mandatory uniform policy.

Many school officials spend a lot of time policing dress codes . Enforcing policies can require a lot of resources as teachers may send kids to the office, and administrators have to determine whether clothing is too baggy, inappropriate, or revealing.

Kids who violate dress codes may spend a lot of time in the office awaiting consequences, or they may receive suspensions for repeated violations. School uniforms can keep kids in the classroom more and prevent staff from wasting time trying to enforce policies.

Parents may spend less money on school clothes when kids wear uniforms. There is less pressure to buy expensive name-brand clothing, and school uniforms might be more affordable.

Opponents of school uniforms, however, say that requiring parents to buy specific articles of clothing goes against the idea that students should be given free education. When public schools force parents to buy uniforms, this could be placing a hardship on some families.

Proponents of uniforms report that they have a positive impact on student self-esteem . Wearing the same clothing as everyone else means that students don’t have to worry about whether their clothing choices will be acceptable to their peers.

But opponents argue that uniforms may have a negative impact on some students’ body image. Research conducted at Arizona State University found that students without uniform policies actually reported higher self-perception scores than students with uniform policies.

When all students wear the same clothing, they may be more likely to compare themselves to their peers as clothing fits differently on everyone’s body.

The Problem With Uniform Research

Although there are many studies that examine the potential benefits and drawbacks of uniforms, many of them revealed correlation, rather than causation. Just because grades went up or behavioral problems went down, there’s no way of knowing that the reason for the change was due to uniform policy. There are many other factors that may have influenced these issues.

A Word From Verywell

Before any school adopts a uniform policy, it may be wise to review the literature. While there certainly may be a lot of benefits to making uniforms mandatory, there are also some potential drawbacks and challenges you might face. Parents, teachers, and administrators may want to weigh the pros and cons before instituting any type of clothing policy for students.

In France, MPs have recently considered whether to reintroduce compulsory school uniform, with first lady Brigitte Macron adding her support to the idea. “It erases differences, it saves time,” she said. These perceptions of the benefits of uniform are widely held – but do they hold up?

French MPs voted against the idea, but uniform is the norm in the UK and has a long history – one which predates universal primary education. This tradition is reinforced in popular media representations of school in the UK, such as the St Trinian’s and Harry Potter films. Uniform requirements may cover what is worn to and from school as well as what is worn in the classroom, and also for physical education.

To understand whether school uniform works or is beneficial, we have to consider what uniforms are meant to achieve. Together with students at the University of Aberdeen, I carried out research on school uniform at all 357 publicly funded secondary schools in Scotland.

We found that 96% of these secondary schools had a compulsory uniform. In our analysis of the school uniform policies, we found a variety of reasons being given to justify compulsory uniforms, with an emphasis on it being in pupils’ own interest .

The most common reason given by schools for this stance was that uniform fosters an ethos, identity, pride and sense of belonging. Other reasons included increasing safety and security and reducing truancy, as well as reducing competition and discrimination between students and increasing employability. Schools also said that uniform was beneficial for the reputation of the school and would improve standards of work among pupils.

The Scottish government has recently stated that: “It is recognised that school uniform plays an important part in the engagement of pupils with school, in promoting a sense of identity, belonging and connectedness to school.”

However, it is not possible to identify whether uniform alone improves factors such as identity and belonging, as the introduction or revamping of a school uniform often coincides with other changes such as a new headteacher or senior leadership team within a school.

Looking the same

In a review of research studies, the Education Endowment Foundation did not find a link between wearing a uniform and an improvement in learning. Another review of research has also found no direct link between uniform and academic performance.

The safety and security reason given by Scottish schools is similar to the reason for introducing school uniform in the US in the 1990s: to reduce gang presence and violence in schools there. By making everyone wear the same clothes, people cannot tell which gang you belong to, or which football team you support.

Uniform may provide the perception that a school is safer or more secure, but there is no UK data to back this up. Research from the US found that teachers perceived schools to be more secure, but that it did not affect students’ perceptions of school security.

Folded school uniform and shoes

In more than 50 of the schools we studied, pupils were being told that wearing a uniform would be useful for their future working lives or employability, as it replicates the working environment . But there are fewer jobs that require uniforms and many workplaces now have more relaxed dress codes.

What’s more, research has found that uniform had a negative impact on girls, young people from an ethnic or religious minority, and gender-diverse young people. The uniform that these young people were required to wear did not match their needs. For example, girls wearing skirts are less likely to be physically active and can feel objectified.

The cost of uniform

There is also a general feeling that a school uniform provides a “level playing field” – that it makes everyone appear the same. The idea is to prevent competition and discrimination about clothing between pupils , as well as improving discipline in a more holistic way and potentially reducing bullying.

However, instead of creating a level playing field, some uniform policies do the opposite . School uniform can cost more than school clothing grants provided to help with the affordability of a uniform.

There is a national minimum clothing grant in Scotland of £150 per year for eligible pupils in secondary schools, but The Children’s Society estimated that uniform cost £337 a year in 2020. There can be stigma about wearing secondhand uniforms, which is why school uniform banks tend to provide new uniforms.

Many schools have exclusive arrangements with suppliers which can make uniform more expensive . Among the schools in our study, almost 20% had this kind of exclusive arrangement .

Schools may also have a list of items that must be worn in school or PE, as well as a list of items that must not be worn.

School uniform at state secondary schools in Scotland:

Showing that 96% of schools have compulsory school uniform, 90% have ties, 66% have blazers, 56% ban jeans, 24% ban hooded tops, 21% ban trainers in class and 20% have exclusive supplier arrangements

Banning everyday items makes uniform more expensive. It adds to the cost of the school day for families, and leads to the creation of school uniform banks.

The Cost of the School Day from charity the Child Poverty Action Group helps schools to create uniform policies that all families can afford. If uniforms are used, then enough financial support should be provided to cover the full cost for eligible families. However, there is no solid research base to rely on to support the requirement for uniforms in schools.

Why School Uniforms?

February 10, 2020

General Uniform Pic

Debates continue about whether students should wear uniforms in schools; however, when you read about schools around the world, a high percentage of those surveyed support school uniforms. Many schools agree that uniforms help remove economic barriers, build feelings of community, and reduce instances of bullying.

Our APA Dress Code is founded on similar beliefs that uniforms decrease distractions, simplify the morning routine, increase respect for each student, and prepare students for success by teaching professional dress.

There are many reasons to encourage school uniforms like the ones worn at American Preparatory Academy. Here are some of them.

  • School uniforms promote learning. Our program is rigorous and requires full attention to be successful. We believe our students' focus should be on what they are learning and not on what they are wearing.
  • School uniforms nourish a sense of equality. When students have similar expectations for dress, unhealthy competitive feelings about looks are reduced. Students can stand out because of their character and not their clothes.
  • School uniforms promote a feeling of community. At APA, we believe our school dress should complement our learning culture. We are preparing our students for success in college and beyond. We want our students to have a proper expectation of professionalism. When our students wear uniforms, they feel included. They are part of a team working toward success in the classroom and life.
  • School uniforms make it easier to get ready for school. One of the best reasons for school uniforms? No more indecision about what to wear in the morning!
  • Uniforms help prevent embarrassing problems while promoting self-discipline. We have developed a standard of dress that is reliable for everyone. We want to help our kids avoid issues related to modesty and cleanliness. Dirty and unkept outfits quickly become a non-issue when there is a standard.
  • School uniforms improve safety. Keeping track of students and what they carry into our schools is made easier for staff and other students. Intruders can be identified right away by our school community because they stand out.
  • School uniforms do not eliminate individuality. Our students have fun participating in the occasional spirit wear or free dress day; however, these days are not the focus for our kids. The character of the individual student is our focus. Our kids shine because of who they are, not how they look.
  • School uniforms are more affordable. At the beginning of the school year, our families typically purchase two sets of uniforms for each of their students. Many of our uniform vendors provide durable options that stand up to repeated washing and wear. Parents may need to replace an item or two throughout the year; however, this is often due to children growing up so fast. Overall, our families save money with uniforms by not having to keep up with the latest fashion trends.
  • Parents and teachers support school uniforms. Administrators and teachers are highly in favor of school uniforms at American Preparatory Academy. Our staff manual states that our, “staff must match the level of formality of our students.” Most parents say that they love the convenience of school uniforms, and they can tell that students have more confidence when they wear them.

The student dress code at American Preparatory Academy  is one that helps create an environment of respect and dignity. Student dress exemplifies students’ respect for themselves, their classmates, and learning. When everyone is wearing the same thing, students can focus on essential issues like academics and character.

Why students must wear school uniforms

We live in a world where the way we look and the way we dress determine our social standing and become the basis for acceptance in society. Glamorous clothes and fashion are idolized and people often try to follow such affluent things to conform to society. It is most often seen in modern schools where such clothes are common, and students are judged by their physical appearance.

Which is why we must help parents and kids see and understand the importance of school uniforms. Here is a list of reasons pointing out the significance of school uniforms and why they must be used in place of those clothes:

1. Equality: One of the significant importance of school uniforms is to give a sense of equality. In today’s world of fashion trends and brands, clothing has become a status symbol for children in schools. Uniforms negate that and instills a sense of oneness amongst them. In that way, it does not give a chance for bullies from richer backgrounds to discriminate and pick on the poor ones with regards to their clothing and as a result, they do not feel alienated.

speech on why school uniform is important

2. Focus on learning: By wearing uniforms, students will no longer feel insecure about the way they look, their social status and will no longer have low self-esteem. Thus they will not have the pressure to conform to society in terms of their peers and will be able to put their energies on to learning and study.

speech on why school uniform is important

Understanding the importance of school uniforms and having a common dress code enables a student to express and define himself be it in arts, sports, music, academics irrespective of the students’ background and will no longer use fashion as a means of defining their creativity.

3. Time-Saving:

It is common to see kids nowadays having a wardrobe overflowing with clothes. As a result, kids would spend inordinate amounts of time deciding the perfect outfit to wear to school that day. This consumes a lot of time. With uniforms, you would know exactly what to wear, you would not be obsessed with wearing the ‘perfect’ outfit, can avoid an argument with your parent over you getting late to school and will overall save a lot of time.

4. Discipline: It is when you are a student that you learn the basic tenets of discipline and control that you take forward to your older age. Wearing a uniform reduces absenteeism, promotes school attendance, pay attention to their studies and instils a lot of discipline, focus and good behaviour. Most importantly, it induces presentation skills, which help them talk with confidence and gives a sense of motivation and purpose.

speech on why school uniform is important

5. Promoting school spirit: The significance and importance of uniforms in school is such that it generates a sense of belonging, pride and loyalty towards the school, encourages the attitude of working in a team that is reflected when they have to represent their school at inter-school events, clubs, sports and competitions.

6. Economical:

Spending large amounts of money on trendy jeans and other designer clothes is expensive for the parent. School uniforms are not very expensive and you can buy multiple sets for a much lesser price. As a result, they will not have to waste their time on deciding the right choice of clothes and will focus more on going to school.

After the points outlined above, it is always a better option to wear uniforms while going to school.

Importance of School Uniform

The childhood days of almost every single human being will invariably have some memories colored by the formal uniforms that are usually worn to the schools. For some individuals, the uniforms persist almost till up to the level of high school whereas, for some, the uniforms often are abandoned at a lower level itself. Nowadays, several schools are eradicating the concept of school uniforms although there are various aspects related to the significance of school uniforms that still hold well even today. There are various reasons why school must have uniforms some of which are mentioned here under:

importance school uniform

  • From the very name itself, it can be found that there is uniformity in the matter and quite obviously, the school uniforms portray a uniformity of pattern to a particular school. It is like an identity of that particular school and the school can immediately be recognized by the specific color of the shirt, skirts, tie, blazers, etc., which are worn by the students every day to the school This is a very important aspect of wearing school uniforms that must never be overlooked no matter what. The student can be segregated as one of the wards of school with the help of uniform only.
  • Uniforms in schools also instill a sense of pride and dignity in all the students starting from the lower classes to the higher classes. The students get a special recognition due to the school uniforms that make them feel confident and enable them to hold their heads high. They learn to respect the uniform of their school and also earn the responsibility of maintaining the reputation of the school intact with proper activities and discipline as well. This starts growing from the very childhood itself and enhances with age so that this characteristic trait remains throughout the lifetime to go on in the future too.
  • Human beings are all social beings and there is no way that one can stay apart from one another as an island. Wearing school uniforms ensure that the students develop a sense of belonging to the school where they are studying. They feel that they are also a valuable part of the institution and their actions will define the name of the school too.
  • Another very essential advantage of wearing school uniforms is that there is no possibility of peer pressure when it comes to the dresses at least. Every student will be wearing the same school uniform made from the same material irrespective of the income status of the student’s family. Hence, harmony and friendship between the students will be restored and facilitated.
  • When all the children wear school uniform, then there are no chances of distraction and students can concentrate on the school work completely. Moreover, if a student by any chance gets lost somewhere, then the other common people can immediately bring back the student to the school by identifying the uniform he or she is wearing. So, in a way, it is an essential requirement for the children especially.

Undoubtedly, school uniforms have a major role to play not only for the discipline and safety purposes but also for building up of the larger emotional senses in the children.

Karan Varjivan (left) and Mabel Richards debate the merits of school uniform.

Are school uniforms a good thing or not?

Interviews by Oliver Laughland

T his week the coalition's new behaviour adviser, Charlie Taylor, advised schools to enforce stricter uniform codes to encourage better discipline. Oliver Laughland brings together Karan Varjivan, 15, a uniform-wearing pupil from Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney and Mabel Richards, 16, from non-uniformed Fortismere school in Muswell Hill, to ask if doing up your tie and tucking in your shirt is a key to educational success.

Karan Varjivan: I go to school in Hackney, which is a really rough area. There's lots of people from abroad, lots of single-parent families with kids who don't get to see their fathers and mothers enough. A lot of pupils have really disorganised lives. I guess the uniform helps them organise themselves. Even being told off for not wearing a tie properly, not tucking your shirt in, that's a little bit of organisation that impacts on their school life as well as helping them to be more organised. Organising your apparel is a bit like organising your mind.

Mabel Richards: Do you not think that teachers are so stretched already that it's a bit of a waste of their time to always be having to police undone top buttons, undone ties – why does that matter when you could be dealing with more important things?

KV: I don't think it takes up a lot of their time.

MR: But what Charlie Taylor is advising is that schools be really strict with their uniforms. If they're going to implement a uniform then they should really enforce it – I agree with that. I think whenever a school sets up rules, of course they should enforce them, or the kids won't listen, but I see having a uniform now as regressive. It sends out the message to children that people in authority have the power to tell us to conform. I don't really think they do. Uniforms were first introduced in the time of Henry VIII with blue coats; education used to be about learning facts and never questioning them. I think today our education system has a lot more creative values, and not having a uniform reflects that.

KV: But my uniform hasn't stopped me being creative.

MR: Maybe through having a uniform you've learned to express yourself in other ways?

KV: Yeah, and I think that's a good thing. You can be a productive member of society and be creative without having to focus on thinking, "Oh, what am I going to wear to school today?"

MR: Like you, I think that discipline is really important, but I also think that there are things that aren't so important, and uniform is one of those things. I have friends who go to uniformed schools and they seem to spend so much time trying to fight the system and rebel; they find tiny ways of expressing themselves such as piercings. Not so long ago I was out with some people who go to uniformed private school and we went to Camden to get their nipples pierced. To go to that kind of length seems a bit mad to me.

KV: [At our school] they know that whatever happens you will get found out, and you will be punished for it.

MR: Even with a nipple piercing?

KV: They'd find you in PE! Believe me – they have their ways!

MR: Your teachers seem omnipresent!

KV: I guess they are. It's almost like it prevents challenging authority.

MR: Doesn't it promote teacher-student conflict, though? If I was constantly being told by my teacher to do my top button up, do this, do that with my clothing it might damage our relationship.

KV: Teachers learn to build up a relationship with you, and it's almost like you can approach them to talk casually as friends. We do joke about.

MR: So, because you wear a uniform, you feel that it encourages your teachers to get to know you more, and it makes you feel more confident?

KV: Yeah, it makes you feel like you come from a small community. It gives you a sense of belonging.

MR: But even though I don't wear uniform, and my school is really big, I still feel part of a community. I think people equate liberal for lax, but it's just not true. We are still united as a school, and as a community. People say uniform is a great tradition, but I don't think it reflects many of the values of today's society. I think to keep it for the sake of tradition is mad.

KV: But I don't think uniform is for the sake of tradition. I think it's more psychological – organise your apparel and your mind will follow. It's more that sense of belonging somewhere. Having this kind of business type of uniform, it makes us feel part of that business world.

MR: But they're children, they're 11 – why should they have to feel like they're part of a business world? Shouldn't we enjoy our childhood, and enjoy getting to wear what we want and express ourselves through our clothes?

KV: It gives me a sense of belonging somewhere, of being a part of something, because all this time I've felt like an outsider, and now it feels like someone's let me in, like I belong somewhere. It's improved my confidence – from being that kid who started off in nursery who, up until year 9, didn't exist at all.

MR: I've never worn a uniform, ever, from four until 16, so I don't know what it's like, but I think as a society we're always striving to celebrate how different and diverse we are – dressing everyone in the same clothes doesn't reflect that. By not having a uniform, I think I've been able to recognise that me and my peers are all different, we've all got different characters and different abilities. And I think it makes teachers recognise that as well I think.

KV: But your differences can be defined by you as a person, like in Martin Luther King's speech "I have a dream". He said that "I dream of a day when people are judged by the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin", so I think the same applies here. In Hackney there's a huge gap between the rich and the poor, but we all go to the same school, and by wearing the same uniform I think it helps people socialise, and helps you judge other people by their character – because it's not like, I dunno, people who wear this brand from Bond Street in one area and people who wear brands from the high street hanging out together.

MR: Do you not feel babied when someone else is telling you what to wear? You grew out of having someone else dress you when you were, what, three or four? With freedom comes responsibility, and with the freedom of being able to dress yourself, you become more responsible – it's made me think about how I present myself to the world – I have worn the wrong stuff sometimes, not unfashionable stuff, but things that are inappropriate and at my peril – it's taught me an important lesson. The sad truth is a lot of the time you might get judged on your appearance – say, at a job interview. Yet if you never really had to learn to dress yourself for a formal environment, you've just been given the clothes, then if you go in dressed inappropriately, you're not going to get the job are you?

WHY SCHOOL UNIFORM IS IMPORTANT IN A STUDENT’S & INSTITUTION’S LIFE

School is the most important foundation phase of anyone’s life. A vibrant school uniform adds on to the excitement of every school-going child when he/she put it on. A decent and good-looking school uniform plays a major role in spreading uniformity, belongingness and equality among students no matter from which class, section, religion, region, economic strata or country they belong to. ABG Uniforms is one of the best manufacturers and suppliers of school uniforms in Dubai, Abu Dhabi UAE and other Middle East countries .

ABG Uniforms is one of the best manufacturers and suppliers of school uniforms in Dubai, Abu Dhabi UAE and other Middle East countries .

Why School Uniform Should Be Mandatory

There are various reasons why schools must have their specific uniform:

(A). Important Reasons

  • School uniform makes students trained to dress smart and feel pride in their appearance from the very early life
  • It brings uniformity and equality among students
  • It develops belongingness in their mind from a particular school
  • It makes them safe from the crime
  • It develops a learning atmosphere among students
  • It teaches discipline among students
  • It prepares students to get ready quick and faster for school
  • It improves punctuality among students that improve attendance

(B). Economic Reasons

  • Students belong to different economic backgrounds i.e. lower, middle and upper classes of society
  • The rich students may wear an expensive dress that distracts the others who are unable to buy the same for the school dress.
  • A school is a learning place for the remaining life period and not to show the wealth through dress.
  • School uniform hides economic differences and develops equality among all students.
  • Thus, school uniform ends a superiority or inferiority complex in students and everyone feels equal among them.

(C). Peer Pressure

A proper school uniform helps both students as well as parents to overcome peer pressure. If the school allows students to wear the dress they like, every student will be busy to compare each- others’ dresses and not learning performances.   It will distract students from study and disturb the learning environment of the school. It will also create pressure in parents from students’ demand to buy a particular dress. Moreover, school uniform reduces the competition and peer pressure concerning fashioned dresses especially for teenage students.

(D). Safety of Students

The parents never want their kids to be unsafe at school. And schools are responsible and accountable for the safety & security of every student. School uniform  plays an important role in the maintenance of discipline in students and makes them safe by keeping an eye on everyone.

A school uniform helps staff in managing students easily on field trips and outings outside the school. Because all students wear the same school uniform which makes it easy to identify and manage them.

(E). School Uniform Develops Professionalism

Wearing uniform from the very early life, beginning in the school, makes students habitual of dress code to follow during the entire life to come.  School uniform gives a decent outlook on every student’s physical appearance. It opens the door for school children to enter into professional life after completing their education, especially when they enter into a corporate setup. It also teaches good manners and behavior to every school going kids to be neat and clean, which they carry on the entire life particularly in adulthood.

1-minute Speech on Uniforms

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, today I stand before you to talk about a topic we all are familiar with – uniforms. Uniforms, as we know, are a set of clothes worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization’s activity.

Firstly, let’s talk about unity. Uniforms bring a sense of unity among us. Whether it’s in school, at a sports team, or in a club, when we wear the same clothes, we feel connected. We feel like we are part of a big family. We share a common identity which strengthens our bond.

Secondly, uniforms promote equality. When we all dress the same, no one can judge us based on our clothes. It doesn’t matter if you are rich or poor, when you wear a uniform, everyone looks the same. It teaches us that we are all equal, and we should treat everyone with the same respect.

Thirdly, uniforms save us time and reduce stress. Imagine having to decide what to wear every single day. With uniforms, we don’t have to worry about that. We can focus on more important things like studying, playing, or helping others.

Lastly, uniforms prepare us for the future. Many jobs require uniforms. Doctors, police officers, chefs, they all wear uniforms. By wearing uniforms at a young age, we learn to dress neatly and professionally.

In conclusion, uniforms are more than just clothes. They bring us together, promote equality, save us time, and prepare us for the future. So, let’s wear our uniforms with pride and respect, because they represent who we are and what we stand for. Thank you.

2-minute Speech on Uniforms

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, I stand before you today to talk about a topic that is very familiar to all of us – uniforms. You see them everywhere – at schools, workplaces, and even in sports. But have you ever wondered why we wear them? Today, I want to share with you the importance and benefits of uniforms.

Firstly, let’s talk about unity. When we all wear the same clothes, we feel like we are part of a team. We feel connected to each other. Just think about your favorite football team. When they wear the same jersey, it’s not just a piece of clothing. It’s a symbol of their unity, their togetherness. Similarly, when we wear our school or work uniforms, we are not just students or employees. We are a team, working together towards a common goal.

Secondly, uniforms help us to focus. Imagine if every day you had to decide what to wear to school or work. It would take up a lot of your time and energy. But with a uniform, you don’t have to worry about what to wear. You can use that time and energy to focus on more important things like studying for your test or preparing for your work presentation.

Thirdly, uniforms promote equality. When everyone is dressed the same, nobody is judged based on their clothes. It doesn’t matter if your clothes are expensive or cheap, trendy or old-fashioned. What matters is who you are as a person, your skills, your talents, your character. Uniforms help to create a fair environment where everyone is treated equally.

Lastly, uniforms help to create a sense of identity and pride. When you wear your school uniform, you represent your school. You become an ambassador of your school’s values and traditions. The same goes for your work uniform. It represents your company’s brand and reputation. Wearing a uniform is not just about following rules, it’s about taking pride in who you are and what you do.

In conclusion, uniforms are not just pieces of clothing. They are powerful tools that promote unity, focus, equality, and pride. So, the next time you put on your uniform, remember its importance and wear it with pride. Because when you wear your uniform, you are not just wearing clothes, you are wearing your identity, your values, your commitment to your team.
