10 great PhD scholarships in the US for international students 2022

If you’re an international student looking for PhD scholarships, consider the US. With over 4,000 universities and six different time zones across 50 states, the US is one of the most popular study destinations in the world. Three main reasons why the US continues to attract PhD students despite their geographical location (usually taking up to two days to arrive from elsewhere) and high living costs as befits a developed nation, are outlined below.

Firstly, the US is home to many world-class universities with robust global  rankings – some of them are even in the top 100 world universities. Even though ranking is not an all-important reason to choose a university to do a PhD, it makes sense to study in one of the world’s best-ranked universities, and where else but to choose the US.

Secondly, the US PhD takes a longer time than PhDs in other countries. This is not necessarily a bad thing because when the US PhD takes up to five years or longer to complete, you will have more time to adjust, settle in and eventually thrive in your studies.

Finally, students doing their PhDs in the US are almost guaranteed to have a tuition fee waiver. They will get a stipend from the university for the entire duration of their studies as well, which makes for an attractive incentive.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

PhD Scholarship 1: University of Idaho

As one of the top 100 for the best value in the US, the University of Idaho is a great choice to do your PhD, thanks to the low cost of living and tuition fees. The College of Graduate Studies has several knowledgeable staff who can advise you on the wide array of financial aid resources as well.

You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. Besides the scholarship application, you have to submit a 500 to 1,000-word essay or a two to five-minute video that describes your aspirations to conduct projects, research or other opportunities to increase intercultural understanding.

PhD Scholarship 2: University of Colorado Boulder

As one of 36 US public research institutions in the Association of American Universities – an elite group of recognised research universities – the University of Colorado Boulder has many enviable rankings such as being the first university to have a STARS Gold for sustainability. Their warm student-centred campus community ensures you will not feel out of place.

The Incoming Graduate Student Fellowship – with a Feb. 11, 2022 deadline under the Centre for Humanities and the Arts – will cover up to 18 credits of tuition per semester, student fees, health insurance as well as a first-year stipend equivalent to a 50% Graduate Part-Time Instructor appointment. You must be enroled as a doctoral student and working in the humanities or arts.

PhD Scholarship 3: Vanderbilt University 

Thanks to an innovative mix of immersive learning, integrated research and collaborative culture, Vanderbilt University is ranked the country’s #14 National University, and #1 for its education, nursing and audiology graduate programmes (US World and News Report 2021). Their location in Nashville, Tennessee allows students to enjoy a world-class city experience in a small college-feel town.

Qualified PhD applicants can apply for the University Graduate Fellowship by Jan. 15, 2022 in order to be nominated by their department. They will receive a stipend of up to US$5,000 for up to three years of their PhD studies.

PhD Scholarship 4 and 5: Washington University in St. Louis

Founded in 1853 in St. Louis, Missouri, Washington University in St. Louis attracts over 15,500 students from 100 countries and all 50 US states. They are well-known for being among the world’s leaders in teaching, research, patient care and service to society.

Below are two scholarships – both with a deadline of Jan. 25, 2022 – offered to students wanting to apply to the Graduate School, Washington University in St. Louis:

Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship

Graduate students with strong academic records, and a keen interest in diversity and service can apply for this Chancellor’s Graduate Fellowship where they will receive academic, professional and personal support. You need to have a US undergraduate degree and have a desire to become a college or university professor.

Fellowship winners enjoy an annual stipend of US$36,720 (2021-22 rate), full tuition coverage, an educational allowance of US$1,500 and priority housing. 

Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Fellowship for Women in Graduate Study

This Fellowship – co-sponsored by the University and the Monticello College Foundation – is especially created to encourage more women to take up graduate study, and serve society afterwards.

The successful recipients will receive an annual stipend worth US$36,720 and a US$600 travel award besides full tuition remission throughout their programme.

PhD Scholarship 6: University of Minnesota Twin Cities

The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is well recognised as one of the most famous public research universities in the US. Over 50,000 students study at this university, which spans five campuses including the main Twin Cities campus.

The Diversity of Views and Experiences (DOVE) Fellowship Programme is available for exceptional research graduate students with diverse life and educational backgrounds who are underrepresented within graduate programmes.

They need to be nominated first by the Director of Graduate Studies in their respective graduate programme; they will get a stipend worth US$25,000, academic tuition for up to 14 graduate-rate credits per semester, health insurance subsidy and dental care.

PhD Scholarship 7: University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin – ranked as the top public university in Texas (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019) – has other high rankings including being #14 Public University (US News and World Report 2019). Their global world ranking is #67 (QS World University Rankings 2022) as well.

Through this Donald D. Harrington Graduate Fellows Programme Fellowship , recruited talented students are envisioned to share their knowledge and success with future generations. A stipend of US$40,000 for 12 months, tuition and required fees, an allowance for student medical insurance, and US$2,000 for miscellaneous expenses make up this generous funding package; the deadline is Jan. 24, 2022.

The following universities and institutions have not indicated any deadlines for their graduate fellowships, but you can contact them for further information.

PhD Scholarship 8: University of Oregon

As a Tier-One National Public Research University and being the top public university in Oregon (for first-year retention and graduation rates), the University of Oregon attracts over 22,000 students. It has nine schools and colleges. 

The International Cultural Service Programme is an annual tuition waiver scholarship ranging from US$9,000 to US$35,000 for up to 15 credits per term. Winners are required to do cultural service in the form of presentations about their home country to children, community organisations and the university’s students and faculty.

PhD Scholarships 9 and 10: East-West Centre

The East-West Centre , established by the US Congress in 1960, is a nonprofit organisation acting as a US-based institution for public diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region. Located adjacent to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM), the centre’s Honolulu campus spans 21 acres.

Below are two Fellowships – established since 1999 through the Y. S. Lee Family Endowed Fellowship Fund and worth US$5,000 each – available for graduate students.

Wing-tsit Chan Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Philosophy

For students interested in Chinese philosophy, they can apply for this fellowship. They need to be nominated by the UHM Philosophy Department and selected by a committee that includes representatives from the East-West Centre’s Education Programme, the department’s Graduate Committee, and a member of the UH Center for Chinese Studies Executive Committee.

Ah Kin (Buck) Yee Graduate Fellowship in Chinese Studies

The recipient should ideally have been accepted for full-time graduate study in any field of Chinese studies. You need to apply via the University of Hawaii’s Student Scholarships website.

“First, you get your bachelor’s degree, and you think you know everything. Then, you get your master’s degree, and you realize you don’t know anything. Then you get your doctorate, and you find out that nobody knows anything.”

While we can’t find information on who said these words, we can’t help but laugh! You, a student pursuing your doctoral degree, may even laugh at it because there’s a grain of truth to it. Your doctoral dissertation, after all, will likely be about creating new knowledge or building on old knowledge because “nobody knows anything,” in a manner of speaking. 

But why are you pursuing a doctoral degree when your master’s degree will suffice for most jobs? There are even people who believe that it’s a waste of time and money for many reasons. Some people push for it because of the numerous benefits that it brings.

So which one’s a better perspective? A doctoral degree is about contributing to the existing body of knowledge through original research. It is considered an introduction to independent research in your chosen field with your doctoral dissertation as the first of many intellectual masterpieces.

Let’s first take a look at the unfavorable view because there’s also some merit to it. For one thing, there’s the cost of doctoral education that, in U.S. universities, can range from $28,000 to $40,000 per year in tuition and fees. In Ivy League universities, the cost can be higher – at Harvard University, for example, the full tuition needed for the first two years of study is $49,448, exclusive of health insurance, housing, books and supplies, and food expenses. 

Yes, indeed, it isn’t cheap to get a doctoral degree in the United States, not even in one of the lesser-known universities!

In addition, there’s a sense of dissatisfaction among doctoral students. You may feel, at one point, that you’re doing slave labor, no thanks to the 10-hour workdays, and low pay during your research.

Your employment prospects may also seem uncertain, considering the competition due to the oversupply of Ph.D. holders . The number of Ph.D. holders exceeds the number of employment opportunities for them, too! Such a disconnection partly stems from the high degree of specialization required in getting a doctoral degree, not to mention that Ph.D. holders have high employment expectations.

Still, the number of doctoral degree holders in the U.S. has more than doubled between 2000 and 2018! In 2000, there were 2 million Ph.D. holders, and by 2018, there were already 4.5 million. Why do people pursue doctoral degrees despite the myriad of challenges that come with them?

Here’s why.

• You have a clear edge in getting higher positions and, thus, higher pay. Studies have shown that a Ph.D. is a contributing factor toward earning over 20% more than people with master’s degrees.   The Chronicle of Higher Education revealed instructors of Legal Professions and Studies without a doctorate earned $64,785, while those with doctorate degrees earned $91,828 per year (2011). In a PayScale comparison , Ph.D. holders earned $98,300 per year, on average.
• Your specialized knowledge and skills are highly marketable. You will likely enjoy a flexible career path, whether you choose a career in public service or the private sector. Your career will also be characterized by the highest lifetime earning potential and the lowest unemployment rate! Your Ph.D. training will also strengthen your critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills, which are highly sought after by employers. 
• You will be a recognized knowledge creator, a rare skill sought after by society and employers, too. You have gained both the discipline and ability to search for, introduce, and defend new knowledge, even under the most stringent scrutiny. Your competencies will lead to a leadership position as you gain respect and prestige.

Are you still worried about the financial expenses of getting a Ph.D. in your field? We completely understand since $50,000-plus per year plus the difficulties of juggling work, studies, and family responsibilities will break a lesser person. The Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarships

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $30,000 up to 400,000 (international coursework or research of up to 4 years) Deadline of Application: Rolling (depends on the country)

The Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholarships program is open to full-time Ph.D. students involved in peace and conflict prevention or resolution, disease prevention and treatment, and water and sanitation. Applications can be made via a local Rotary Club chapter, and the chapter must sponsor non-Rotarians applying for the scholarship. The chapter creates the applicants’ initial application, and the latter then completes the online scholar profile.

The amount can be used for various costs, including passport/visa, travel expenses, tuition, and other fees, vaccinations, school supplies, room and board, and household supplies.

Newberry Consortium in American Indian Studies Faculty Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $5,000/month (Long-term fellowship for 4-9 months); $5,000/month (Short-term fellowship for a month only) Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023 (Long-term fellowship); January 15, 2024 (Short-term fellowship)

The American Indian Studies Faculty Fellowship is intended for scholars in the early stages of their careers who are involved in American Indian studies, specifically research in the Newberry Consortium collections. Doctoral students are welcome to apply. The monthly stipend can be used for a wide range of education-related expenses, too.

Fellows receive the NCAIS research carrel and other fellowship privileges, as well as perform responsibilities related to their research. These include research presentation, seminar participation, and consultation with other NCAIS Graduate Student Fellows.

AIA Fellowship for Study in the U.S.

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: Varies Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023

The Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) offers post-doctoral research fellowships for archaeologists working at Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) or its project collaborators. The fellowships are for either fall 2024 or spring 2025 in selected universities, including the University of Cincinnati, the Joukowsky Institute at Brown University, or the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Fellows are provided with financial support for travel expenses, a stipend for living expenses, and residency at a university housing or rental housing, as well as library privileges. The residency lasts for 2-3 months only, and during which time, the Fellows are expected to give a minimum of one lecture at their respective host university. 

Applications should include a duly filled-up online application form, a curriculum vitae, and two references, among others.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $50,000 (This represents the total dollars awarded every year. The actual amount given to fellows vary depending on their program) Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship is for doctoral students pursuing NSF-supported STEM disciplines in accredited universities. If you wish to apply, follow the recommended application templates and formats to be considered. The application should include an essay, a recommendation letter, a personal statement, an official transcript, and a completely filled-up application form.

Note the different dates for submission to the National Science Foundation of the full proposal depending on the type of grant:

Type of Scholarship: Annual (Renewable) Amount: $30,000 for one year (If necessary, a fellow can apply and be approved for the second year of financial support) Deadline of Application: Opens September to December 2023 for the 2024 awards 

Students who are pursuing advanced training and research, including doctoral studies in water supply and treatment and its related fields, can apply for the Abel Wolman Fellowship. The doctoral fellowship provides financial support for up to two years to an outstanding student. Applications can be sent to the American Water Works Association (AWWA), and more information can be seen on its site.

AWWA Larson Aquatic Research Support Scholarships

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $7,000/student Deadline of Application: Opens September to December 2023 for the 2024 awards 

Made in honor of Dr. Larson, the Larson Aquatic Research Support (LARS) scholarship is available for outstanding doctoral students engaged in the fields of science and engineering. The selection committee chooses one doctoral student every year for the scholarship, with an emphasis on excellent academics and leadership potential.

Applications must include a resume, official transcripts, three recommendation letters, and GRE scores as well as a course of study. Be sure to submit your research plans, too, with your application.

YIVO – Joseph Kremen Memorial Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $5,000 Deadline of Application: Opens in September 2023 for the 2024-2025 fellowship period

The Joseph Kremen Memorial Fellowship is available for postgraduate researchers studying Eastern European Jewish arts, theater, and music. Keep in mind that only one exemplary scholar will be chosen annually, so it’s highly competitive. The chosen fellow can spend the stipend on expenses related to his/her research in YIVO’s archives and library collections.

Every fellow is also required to deliver a public lecture regarding his/her research. The research period should be between 2 and 3 months only. Interested applicants should submit a written summary of their respective research on acceptable topics.

YIVO- Dora and Meyer Tendler Fellowship

Yet another sought after YIVO scholarship is the Dora and Mayer Tendler Endowed Fellowship, a scholarship program for individuals in doctoral and post-doctoral research. Only one exemplary fellow is chosen every year.

The research should focus on American Jewish history with the selection committee giving preferential consideration to research proposals related to the Jewish labor movement. As with all YIVO fellowships, the selected fellow should conduct 2-3 months of research in YIVO’s archives and library, as well as make a public lecture.

AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual (Non-renewable) Amount: $25,000 Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023

The American Educational Research Association Dissertation Fellowship is open for doctoral students belonging to the minorities. These include African Americans, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Hispanics, Asians, and Pacific Islanders. Both U.S. citizens and permanent residents in the U.S. can apply for as long as they are in a doctoral program in an accredited university.

Since this is a write-up fellowship, applicants should be working full-time on their course requirements and be writing their dissertations. There are three components to the award: a $25,000 stipend that can be used for tuition and fees, books and supplies, equipment and software, living expenses and travel, and other direct research-related expenses; a research presentation at the 2025 AERA Annual Meeting; and participation in the AERA Minority Fellows Mentoring and Career Development Workshop. 

National Gem Consortium Ph.D. Science Scholarship

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $16,000 living stipend plus a paid summer internship Deadline of Application: November 10, 2023

The National Gem Consortium’s PhD Science Scholarship is exclusive for students belonging to the minority in their first year of doctoral studies. Applicants should be pursuing a natural science discipline, such as earth science, chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics, and computer science. The scholarship applies to an accredited GEM member university.

Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship or legal residency, as well as be able to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and get promising GRE scores.

NAEd Spencer Dissertation Fellowships

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $27,500/fellow (Up to 35 fellowships are awarded every year) Deadline of Application: October 5, 2023 at 5pm Eastern Time

The National Academy of Education (NAEd) awards its Spencer Dissertation Fellowships to exemplary doctoral students pursuing studies in the history, theory and analysis, and practice of formal education. The amount should be used in the completion of each fellow’s dissertation and should be spent within two years and under the proposed work plan.

Eligible candidates must have completed all pre-dissertation requirements and be enrolled in a graduate school in the U.S. Applicants are required to submit their respective research proposal and two reference letters, as well as demonstrate an interest in education research.

National Gem Consortium Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $16,000 living stipend for the first academic year plus a paid summer internship Deadline of Application: November 10, 2023

The National GEM Consortium in Engineering Fellowship is open to Ph.D. students belonging to the minority, and who have been accepted into a doctoral program straight from a bachelor’s degree program or who have earned a master’s in Engineering. Fellows can be enrolled in any of the participating GEM member universities. 

The above-mentioned stipend applies to the first academic year of fellowship for a Ph.D. Engineering/Science Fellow. After that, the fellow will enjoy continued living stipend up to the fifth year of Ph.D. studies through a combination of alternative funding sources. The fellow will also have his tuition and fees paid for by the GEM university member.

Michael J. Barrett Doctoral Dissertation Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $10,000 (Up to two awards are granted every year) Deadline of Application: October 15, 2023 (Winners are announced by December 15, 2023)

The Michael J. Barrett Doctoral Dissertation Grant is exclusively for doctoral candidates pursuing accounting, auditing, and business programs in accredited colleges and universities. Only complete applications will be accepted with the required submissions, including the dissertation proposal, detailed cover letter, and two letters of recommendation from relevant professors.

Applicants should also demonstrate an intention to teach auditing for a minimum of two years, attend a relevant doctorate program, have either completed or within a year of completion of pre-dissertation requirements, and be in the dissertation writing stage.

Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Doctoral Award

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $20,000 annual stipend and a maximum of five years of full tuition and fees coverage (Except when the university/college disallows fee waivers) Deadline of Application: Opens in January 2024 for the 2024 DSP Fellowship

The SREB Doctoral Award is a package consisting of two components. First, the scholar will get three years of direct support. Second, he/she will also get two years of institutional support from his/her college/university – a $20,000 annual stipend. During these five years, he/she will also enjoy full coverage of tuition and fees, with some exceptions as needed.

Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) Dissertation Award

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $20,000 annual stipend, maximum of five years of full tuition and fees coverage (Except when the university/college disallows fee waivers) and $500 research allowance Deadline of Application: Opens in January 2024 for the 2024 DSP Fellowship

The SERB Dissertation Award is a short-term program (only one year), but it’s among the most generous programs we’ve come across. The scholar will be provided with direct financial support, as mentioned above, as well as professional development support and an invitation to the Compact for Faculty Diversity Institute on Teaching & Mentoring.

Eligible applicants should have completed all their required coursework and exams, as well as either will defend or have successfully defended their respective dissertation prospectus before the academic year starts. Enrollment in a participating college/university in a participating state is a must.

(ISC)² Graduate Cybersecurity Scholarship

Type of Scholarship: Annual (Renewable but applicant must go through the process again) Amount: $1,000 – $5,000 (Up to 20 awards will be given for this cycle) Deadline of Application: Opens January 15, 2024 and closes February 29, 2024 11:59 pm EST

The (ISC)² Graduate Scholarship program is offered to individuals planning to pursue or pursuing doctoral degrees in cybersecurity or information assurance. Eligibility requirements include a minimum of 3.5 GPA or equivalent, may be enrolled in face-to-face or online classes, maybe a part-time or full-time student, and maybe attending a school in the U.S. or abroad. Non-U.S. citizens may also apply. 

Submissions should include either the most recent or current unofficial transcripts, a letter of recommendation, an updated curriculum vitae, and an essay. Take note that funds will only be disbursed upon proof of enrollment and receipt of official transcripts.

ASA Minority Fellowship Program

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $20,000 stipend for a full academic year (August 1 – July 31) Deadline of Application: Opens on November 5, 2023 and ends on January 31, 2024

The American Sociological Association (ASA) established its Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) to provide financial support for sociologists of color, particularly in the pursuit of advanced studies or specialization. Candidates can be U.S. citizens or permanent residents or eligible under DACA rules, and they should either be attending or have completed a full academic year in a sociology doctorate program.

Aside from the annual stipend, ASA also makes arrangements for tuition payments to the concerned departments or universities. Funds for travel to the ASA annual meetings are also available, albeit limited.

YIVO – Fellowship in East European Jewish Studies

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $20,000 stipend  Deadline of Application: Opens in September 2023 for the 2024-2025 fellowship period

The combined Professor Bernard Choseed Memorial Fellowship and the Natalie and Mendel Racolin Memorial Fellowship come with many benefits. Aside from the financial stipend, its recipient has three months of free access to the YIVO Library and Archives for his/her research. He/she, on the other hand, will be required to deliver at least two public lectures on Jewish studies.

YIVO – Fellowship in Baltic Jewish Studies

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $4,000 stipend Deadline of Application: Opens in September 2023 for the 2024-2025 fellowship period 

This is a combination of scholarships with a $4,000 combined stipend. The scholarship supports original doctoral research in Baltic Jewish studies for 2-3 months. The research should be conducted at the YIVO Library and Archive and the recipients are required to give a public lecture.

YIVO – Fellowship in Polish Jewish Studies

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $4,000 stipend Deadline of Application: Opens in September 2023 for the 2024-2025 fellowship period  

The Fellowship in Polish Jewish Studies is also a combined scholarship with a cumulative $4,000 stipend for 2-3 months. The recipient should spend the scholarship duration on research at the YIVO Library and Archives, and the dissertation should touch on Polish-Jewish history, relations, and cultural exchanges. He/she will also be required to give a public lecture on the topic.

YIVO – Fellowship in East European Jewish Literature

The Fellowship in East European Jewish Literature is also a combined scholarship with a specific focus on Eastern European Jewish literature. The recipient can focus his/her research on the Jewish diaspora regardless of location. As with the other YIVO scholarships, it comes with a stipulation for 2-3 months of research at YIVO’s library and archives, as well as a public lecture.

YIVO – The Dina Abramowicz Emerging Scholar Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $3,000 stipend Deadline of Application: Opens in September 2023 for the 2024-2025 fellowship period

This is a fellowship for post-doctoral research on Eastern European Jewish studies. The research should result in a notable scholarly publication on the topic, although the fellowship can also be applied to doctoral dissertation revision. The fellowship, which has the same 2- to 3-month research at the YIVO library and a public lecture, can be awarded as is or combined with other YIVO fellowships.

YIVO – The Workers Circle

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $10,000 stipend Deadline of Application: Opens in September 2023 for the 2024-2025 fellowship period   

The Workers Circle/ Dr. Emanuel Patt Visiting Professorship in Eastern European Jewish Studies may also be combined with other fellowships, or it can be awarded separately. It’s also designed to provide financial support for up to three months of post-doctoral research by the visiting faculty member/recipient who, in turn, is required to give a public lecture.

Nurses Educational Funds, Inc. (NEF)

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: Varies  Deadline of Application: Opens October 2, 2023 and ends on February 1, 2024

NEF offers several scholarship opportunities for doctoral students in the field of nursing, many of which are the result of endowments by notable nursing practitioners who want to support the continued education of professional nurses. 

• The NEF/Johnson and Johnson Health Equity Scholarship program promotes the research, advocacy and clinical practice of nursing professionals interested in underrepresented groups and addressing the health inequalities and disparities in these populations. 
• The AJN/Thelma Schorr Scholarship program has a preference for nurses with nursing leadership potential. 
• The Cynthia Davis Sculco Scholarship permanent program awarded scholarships to nurses studying nursing education at the doctoral level. 
• The M. Elizabeth Carnegie African American Scholarship program is for black nurses in doctoral degree programs. 

Intercollegiate Studies Institute Graduate Fellowships

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $5,000 to $15,000 Deadline of Application: January 19, 2024   

ISI awards up to 15 graduate fellowships for doctoral students pursuing degrees in either the social sciences or humanities. Applicants must be U.S. citizens with plans of full-time enrollment in the 2024-2025 academic year and intend to teach at the post-secondary level. Applicants who weren’t granted fellowships in their previous application can reapply; previous fellows are ineligible for application. 

Application requirements include 1,250- to 2,500-word original essay on the topic of, “What is the relationship between liberal education and a free society?”; autobiography; academic writing sample, and two academic letters of recommendation.  

Fellowship amounts can be used for tuition, books, and living expenses, among other program-related expenses at the awardee’s discretion. Fellows must attend annual weekend colloquium with their expenses paid for by ISI. 

Newberry Consortium National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $5,000/month  Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023 

The long-term fellowship lasts between four and nine months during which time the recipient will perform scholarship activities relevant to the collections owned and maintained by The Newberry Consortium. Applicants must possess a PhD degree or its equivalent on or before the application deadline, as well as be either a U.S. citizen or a foreign national with at least three years of continuous residence in the country. 

NCTM & AMTE Early Career Research Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $10,000 each, maximum  Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023 

Granted in partnership with Eugene P. & Clara M. Smith Mathematics Education Research Fund, the Early Career Research Grant accepts applications from doctoral candidates pursuing math education degrees. The grant must be used in supporting their doctoral research project, preferably projects that bridge research and practice. 

Note that early career math educators, or those who have completed either an EdD or PhD in math education or other related fields within the past five years, are eligible to apply. Doctoral students will only be considered if they have advanced to candidacy status in accredited programs. 

Midwest Nursing Research Society  (MNRS) Seed Research Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: One $5,000 maximum  Deadline of Application: October 18, 2023 

The MNRS Seed Grant will support researchers engaged in quantitative and qualitative research in nursing science-related topics. Applicants must perform their research in the Midwest. Nursing researchers are eligible to apply regardless of their time from dissertation and previous funding history. Current and active membership in the MNRS is a must to be considered for eligibility. 

Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual (Non-renewable)  Amount: $10,000 with up to 30 awardees  Deadline of Application: November 15, 2023

Established in 1938, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship promotes equal access to resources for women in the fields of aerospace engineering and space sciences. Awardees are chosen based on their superior academic record and applied research in aerospace engineering and space sciences. 

Applicants must be women pursuing doctoral degrees in these fields with the award amount allowed for use at any accredited college or university and for postgraduate courses and degrees. Strict eligibility requirements, such as club members and their family members as well as previous fellows being disqualified, are implemented. 

Wenner-Gren Foundation Dissertation Fieldwork Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual (Non-renewable)  Amount: $25,000  Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023 

While the Dissertation Fieldwork Grant doesn’t have any particular preferences for research topics, methodology and location, the Wenner-Gren Foundation welcomes interdisciplinary proposals. Applicants must demonstrate their capacity and passion for the advancement of anthropological knowledge that increases the depth and breadth of our understanding of being human. The award amount should be used for doctoral research in this regard. 

Applicants must be doctoral students and must designate a dissertation advisor on their application. Previous applicants may reapply via a resubmission. 

MNRS Step-Up Grant 

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: $2,500 Deadline of Application: October 18, 2023

The MNRS will select one awardee for the Step-up Grant from funds generated through its MNRS Foundation Annual Walk-a-Thon. The award amount can be used for qualitative and quantitative research in any nursing-related topic, but there’s a preference for research into the health inequalities and discrepancies in the Midwest. 

Doctoral students will only be considered for dissertation grants. Strict policies are in place for the use of the grant amount. 

MNRS Founders Circle Dissertation Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual Amount: $2,500 Deadline of Application: October 18, 2023

The MNRS Founders Circle Dissertation Grant will be awarded to just one doctoral student but can only be used as a dissertation grant. The grant is intended for the promotion of nursing science and practice including quantitative and qualitative research among researchers in the Midwest. 

Only current and active MNRS members will be considered during the application and selection process.

MNRS Joseph & Jean Buckwalter Dissertation Grant

Established in honor of the husband-and-wife duo, the Joseph & Jean Buckwalter Dissertation Grant supports researchers in the Midwest whose interests are in mental health and chronic illnesses. 

MNRS/Council for Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) Dissertation Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: Up to $5,000  Deadline of Application: October 18, 2023

Only one awardee will be selected for the MNRS/CANS Dissertation Grant. Applicants, who must be current and active MNRS and CANS members to be considered, will be evaluated based on their quantitative and qualitative research into the advancement of nursing science and practice. 

Stantec Scholarship

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: $10,000 Deadline of Application: Opens September to December 2023 for the 2024 awards

Stantec Inc., a well-known provider of engineering consulting services with specializations in construction management, architectural and environmental services, offers the Stantec Scholarship in partnership with the American Water Works Association (AWWA). The scholarship supports a student pursuing a PhD in water treatment science and engineering. 

Note that the AWWA-Stantec Scholarship is part of the Stantec Equity and Diversity Scholarship, which promotes equity, diversity and inclusion for positive impact in the industry. 

The Mellon Foundation Fellowship

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: $5,000/month Deadline of Application: November 1, 2023 

This is a long-term fellowship offered by The Newberry with fellows getting financial support for a period between four and nine months. Fellows must be engaged in scholarship in any field pertaining to its collection. 

Richard H. Brown/William Lloyd Barber Felowships

The long-term fellowship program welcomes applicants with a PhD degree on or before the application deadline. The Richard H. Brown/William Lloyd Barber Fellows must spend between four and nine months on studying American history, particularly on topics related to The Newberry’s collection. 

The Evelyn Dunbar and Ruth Dunbar Davee Fellowship

The long-term Evelyn Dunbar and Ruth Dunbar Davee Fellowship program offered by The Newberry supports scholarships in its music-related collection. Fellows will be awarded the monthly stipend for 4-9 months. 

Lloyd Lewis Fellowships in American History

Past fellows of the Lloyd Lewis Fellowships in American History offered by The Newberry performed scholarly activities related to American history as it pertains to its collection. The long-term fellowship program requires commitment for 4-9 months and a PhD degree to be considered. 

The Audrey Lumsden-Kouvel Fellowship

Yet another long-term fellowship program offered by The Newberry, the Audrey Lumsden-Kouvel Fellowship supports scholars-researchers studying the history and literature of Romance cultures and the colonial Americas from the late medieval to the early modern periods. Fellows have a PhD degree and receive a monthly stipend during the duration of the fellowship, usually 4-9 months. 

The Monticello College Foundation Fellowship for Women

The Newberry-administered Monticello College Foundation Fellowship for Women supports one female fellow who must hold a PhD on or before the application deadline. The fellow receives a monthly stipend for 4-9 months and must demonstrate scholarly productivity during her in-residence tenure at the Newberry. 

Rudolph Ganz Fellowship

Named in honor of American pianist, conductor, composer, and music educator Rudolph Ganz, The Newberry-administered long-term fellowship provides financial support for researchers engaged in the study of Ganz’s papers in its collection. These include Ganz’s musical compositions as well as lectures, speeches, essays and recordings. 

Most of the long-term fellowships (4-9 months’ duration) are open for scholars regardless of their nationality; the notable exception is the National Endowment for the Humanities-funded program. International scholars possessing the J-1 visa are also eligible for long-term fellowships. 

The Newberry Short-Term Residential Fellowships for Individual Research

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: $3,000 for one month only Deadline of Application: December 15, 2023 

Eligible applicants are scholars and researchers in any field. Applicants who are in their graduate studies must have completed their academic requirements except for their dissertation (All But Dissertation or ABD) by December 15, 2023 to be considered. 

The Newberry Fellows’ Fellowship

The Newberry Fellows’ Fellowship program supports researchers/scholars with a demonstrated need for scholarly activities related to the Newberry collection. The short-term program welcomes scholars from all fields of study but graduate students who submit their application must be on ABD status by application deadline. 

The Newberry The John S. Aubrey Fellowship

The John S. Aubrey Fellowship is also a short-term program designed for scholars/researchers interested in studying the Newberry collection. Again, graduate student applicants must have completed academic requirements except for their dissertation. 

The Newberry The Charles Montgomery Gray Fellowship

PhD candidates who have yet to finish their doctoral dissertations but have complied with academic requirements are welcome to apply for the short-term fellowship. Note that postdoctoral scholars are also eligible. While the fellowship welcomes scholars/researchers from all fields of study, the Newberry gives preference to research projects related to the Renaissance and early modern periods, as well as legal history, European history, and English history. 

The Newberry The Adele Hast Fellowship in American History

The short-term Adele Hast Fellowships is particularly intended for scholars/researchers engaged in the study of American history as it relates to the Newberry collections. Both PhD students on ABD status and postdoctoral scholars are welcome to apply. 

The Newberry The Arthur and Janet Holzheimer Fellowship in the History of Cartography

Postdoctoral scholars and PhD students who have yet to complete their dissertation can apply for the short-term fellowship. But their research projects must be specifically related to cartography including its history, evolution and materials. 

The Newberry The Anne Jacobson Schutte Fellowship in Early Modern Studies

The short-term fellowship invites PhD students on ABD status and postdoctoral scholars to apply for the short-term fellowship. Preference is for researchers/scholars engaged in the study of the culture, society and other aspects of the early modern period (1300s-1700s). Scholars whose research projects are related to spirituality, Venice, and/or women’s studies are highly preferred. 

For most, if not all, of the short-term fellowship programs administered by The Newberry, the application materials include a project abstract, project description and bibliography as well as a curriculum vitae and letters of recommendation. The letters of recommendation have a 10-day grace period for recommenders (i.e., up to December 25, 2023 only). Notices to applicants will be sent by late April or early May 2024. 

For the long-term fellowships, The Newberry provides a ten-day grace period for the letters of recommendation (i.e., up to November 10, 2023 only). Applicants will be sent notification notices (accepted/rejected) in either late February or early March 2024. 

MNRS/Sigma Research Grant

Type of Scholarship: Annual  Amount: Up to $3,500  Deadline of Application: April 1, 2024

Qualified nurses who are enrolled in doctoral programs are eligible to apply for the MNRS/Sigma Research Grant. The selected awardee must implement and complete their research projects within one year after receiving the funds and must agree to the terms in a Research Grant Agreement.

Are scholarships for Ph.D. applicants easy to obtain?

The availability of scholarships for Ph.D. applicants varies depending on the program and school. Generally, scholarships are more difficult to obtain than grants or fellowships, as there is often a limited amount of funds available and a more significant number of applicants competing for them.

Scholarships are usually merit-based – such as for a certain GPA, athletic ability or hobby – or based on a student's specific area of study or identity.

While it's well known that financial aid exists for undergraduates, many students are unaware that scholarships also are available for those seeking a graduate degree.

At San Diego State University , for instance, 29% of total scholarships were awarded to graduate students during the 2022-2023 cycle, says Kari Hooker, director of scholarships in the university's Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

Funding amounts and availability of scholarships for graduate students – who make up about 15% of the higher education student population, according to a 2020 Center for American Progress  report  on graduate school debt – vary by program. But every dollar counts, experts say.

"Not surprisingly, private colleges and universities are able to fund more scholarships due to their hefty endowments," Nellie Gaynor, a graduate school and MBA admissions counselor at Ivywise, an educational consulting firm, wrote in an email. "However, students need to review these scholarship ‘discounts’ in relation to the overall package that is being presented to them including academics, student life, location , fit and cost. Ultimately, scholarships are one piece of a larger puzzle when deciding which admissions offers to accept."

The application process differs depending on the graduate scholarship, but may require filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA , writing an essay and submitting a letter of recommendation .

For prospective professional and graduate students, here are some points to consider when tracking down scholarships to pay for an advanced degree .

The Difference Between Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are forms of financial aid that don't need to be paid back, also known as "gift aid."

Northern Arizona University 's Louis H. and Betty J. Quayle Scholarship, for instance, provides up to $4,000 per semester to part- and full-time graduate students who are members of a federally recognized Native American tribe or nation.

"Scholarships can come in all kinds of amounts and students can apply for several at a time to help cover the cost of tuition," Suzanne T. Ortega, president of the Council of Graduate Schools, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and advancing graduate education, wrote in an email.

Grants, however, are typically awarded at the college , state or federal level based on financial need, like the federal Pell Grant for low-income students. Pell Grants are generally for undergraduate students, but graduate students may be eligible for other federal grants.

Where to Look for Graduate School Scholarships

As aspiring graduate students start their search process, it's important to "really focus on the scholarships that are most appropriate for them and not put effort into scholarships where they are not truly eligible," Hooker says.

Different types of national graduate school scholarships are listed on database search websites, like Fastweb , Cappex and Unigo . GoGrad is another online resource that lists niche scholarships for prospective and current grad students.

"Often, what is called a scholarship in the undergraduate sphere is frequently called a fellowship in the graduate sphere," Ortega says. "So be sure to look for fellowships as well."

Institutional Scholarships

Students can reach out to the school's financial aid office or talk with a program department head or adviser to learn about degree- or research-specific scholarships, like teaching. As part of the Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program's Humanities Teaching Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania , for example, fellows are awarded a $32,000 scholarship.

"Most students will have to supplement their financial aid package with student loans (both federal and private), graduate assistantships, or work-study programs, Gaynor says. "With that being said, we have seen an increase in graduate and adult programs therefore leading to an increase in applications for graduate school admissions. Given the competitiveness in this space, schools are using school scholarships as a way to attract talent to their school."

Local Scholarships

Graduate students should not look past applying to local scholarships , which are usually less competitive than national scholarships, experts say. A student's employer , parent's employer or even place of worship, like a church or synagogue, may offer scholarships.

Another option is to find and join professional associations in a field of interest. For instance, undergraduate and graduate members of the National Black MBA Association, Inc., can apply for an award of up to $5,000.

The American Bar Association also awards $15,000 of financial aid over three years to underrepresented first-year law school students. About 10 to 20 incoming students receive the Legal Opportunity Scholarship each year.

When to Apply for Scholarships for Grad School

Deadlines for scholarships vary, but Ortega advises students to start their search as soon as they're accepted into a graduate program – if not before.

"You can apply to scholarships year-round, so always be on the lookout for new ones that pop up," she says. "Even if you planned to take out a student loan , you can still apply for scholarships to help reduce the amount of loan you need."

What's the Best Strategy to Win a Scholarship?

If there are short answers or essay questions in the application, Hooker advises students to write about what makes them unique.

"Try to be sincere and share what you are going through and how a scholarship would benefit you," she says. "We have a lot of students that work 20 plus hours a week. They need to let those committees know because those are the students that we want to support."

Before submitting a scholarship application, have a peer or undergraduate adviser review the application for grammar mistakes and other errors, experts say.

"An advantage of applying for scholarships as a graduate student versus an undergraduate is that you have more life and educational experience to draw from when writing a scholarship essay ," Ortega says. "Since graduate school programs are more focused on a specific area, it’s easier to speak to why you are pursuing this degree or area of research, which may be a compelling story for the scholarship application."

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,000 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the class entering in Fall 2024 : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) . 

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . Each year Gates Cambridge offers c.80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Approximately two-thirds of these awards will be offered to PhD students, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 available in the International round.

There are approximately 250 Scholars from c. 50 countries studying in Cambridge at any one time who pursue the full range of subjects available at the University and are spread across its departments and Colleges, as well as forming their own distinctive community.

There is also a community of more than 1,700 Gates Cambridge Alumni spread across the world.

The Gates Cambridge mission is to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme was established in October 2000 by an historic  donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. The first class of scholars came into residence in October 2001. Since then, the Trust has awarded over 2,000 scholarships to scholars from more than 100 countries.

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.

* The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students; applicants should see the Graduate Studies prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student has been successful in gaining a fee award from public authorities (such as the UKRI ) they should accept this award and the Trust will not pay their fee or may share their fee and maintenance costs.

Discretionary components

The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:

Academic development funding – from up to £500 to up to £2,000, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.

Dependent Children Allowance – up to £11,604 for one child and up to £16,548 for two or more children (2023-24 rate). No funding is provided for a partner.

Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD (the Trust does not fund other fieldwork costs as these should be funded by the University Composition Fee).

Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time

Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties facing the scholar

Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship?

If you are receiving a salary from an employer or have another substantial scholarship, the Trust reserves the right to reduce or not pay the standard maintenance allowance. You should let the Trust know ASAP if you are awarded any funding towards your degree at Cambridge.

What is not covered?

Most costs are covered by the Scholarship but Gates Cambridge does not cover bench fees or the costs of scientific equipment or similar academic resources. The Trust expects such core course costs to be covered by the academic department at Cambridge.

Twas-dbt postgraduate fellowship programme, twas-dbt postdoctoral fellowship programme, twas-fapesp postdoctoral fellowship programme for least developed countries (ldc), twas research grants programme in basic sciences: individuals, phd fellowships.

For developing countries, and especially the Least Developed Countries, PhD scientists help build a foundation for scientific strength and human prosperity. TWAS offers between 100 - 160 PhD fellowships a year at some of the most respected institutions in the developing world. These fellowships are hosted in Brazil, China, India, Pakistan and South Africa.

Before applying:

• Applications can only be submitted via the online portal once the call is open.
• Please use the "Apply now" button at the bottom of each programme page to start your application once the call is open.
• Both the opening and closing dates will be mentioned on each individual programme page.
• Applicants are encouraged to apply for the preliminary acceptance letter as early as possible, even before the opening date of the call. Only Acceptance letters dated the same year as the year of application are eligible.
• Please be advised that applicants may apply for only one programme per calendar year in the TWAS and OWSD portfolio. Applicants will not be eligible to visit another institution in that year under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes. One exception: The head of an institution who invites an external scholar to share his/her expertise under the TWAS Visiting Professor programmes may still apply for another programme.

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology in India, and UNESCO-TWAS established a fellowship programme for foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in biotechnology.

According to an agreement between the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS/UNESCO) for the advancement of science in developing countries, up to 50 students/scholars from developing countries will be sponsored to study in China for doctoral degrees for up to 4 years

The International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) — comprising the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry and the Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular and Drug Research in Karachi, Pakistan — and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries (other than Pakistan) who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in chemical and biological sciences.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of India and UNESCO-TWAS have established a number of fellowships for foreign scholars from developing countries, who wish to pursue research toward a PhD in emerging areas of science and technology, for which facilities are available in CSIR laboratories and institutes.

In the nation’s m.d.-ph.d. programs, the socioeconomic gap widens.

A new Yale study finds that M.D.-Ph.D. programs in the United States have become less socioeconomically diverse in recent years. Between 2014 and 2019, applicants from families with higher household incomes were accepted at increasingly higher rates, a trend not found among other income brackets.

The findings, which the researchers say have implications for biomedical innovation and equitable health care, were reported March 12 in JAMA Network Open.

Diversity in medicine has wide-reaching benefits, said Mytien Nguyen, an M.D.-Ph.D. student at Yale School of Medicine and lead author of the study. “We know that diversity in the medical field leads to more effective and equitable health care for patients,” she said. “And the different perspectives that diversity brings also boosts biomedical innovation and productivity.”

Achieving greater diversity in the programs that train physician-scientists, therefore, is particularly important since these individuals conduct research and treat patients, playing a pivotal role in translating research into health care.

To assess socioeconomic diversity in M.D.-Ph.D. programs, the researchers used data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, looking at applicants’ acceptance rates between 2014 and 2019 and their reported household incomes. They found that pools of both applicants and accepted students became less socioeconomically diverse over that five-year period.

First, fewer prospective students from low-income families applied to M.D.-Ph.D. programs over the study period, the researchers found. Between 2014 and 2019, the percentage of applicants reporting less than $50,000 in household income decreased from 28.4% to 25.1%.

Throughout the same time period, individuals from affluent families made up a greater proportion of accepted students. In 2014, 16.1% of applicants accepted into at least one M.D.-Ph.D. program came from households that reported more than $200,000 in income, a rate that steadily increased to 20.9% in 2019.

Across all years assessed, 29.9% of applicants with incomes under $50,000 were accepted in M.D.-Ph.D. programs. That rate rose steadily across higher income brackets, peaking at 50.3% for applicants with incomes greater than $200,000.

“ And everything else being equal, including test scores and number of publications, applicants from the lowest income tier were 16% less likely than their affluent peers to be accepted into an M.D.-Ph.D. program,” said Nguyen.

This finding in particular, said the researchers, suggests M.D.-Ph.D. programs may be evaluating applicants based on characteristics associated with privilege rather than merit, such as attending a prestigious undergraduate institution or the status of the person who writes the applicants’ recommendations.

In a previous study, the researchers found similar trends across U.S. medical schools. Together, they said, these findings speak to a significant socioeconomic disparity in terms of the pathway into the medical field.

“ But this is an aspect amenable to intervention,” said Nguyen.

To boost socioeconomic equity, programs should consider more holistic measures of capability in addition to traditional academic accomplishments, the researchers said. This could include criteria that evaluate qualities like grit and resilience. Programs should also not penalize low-income applicants for activities that might be more necessary for them than those with greater financial resources, such as having jobs rather than research positions, they added.

And programs should be cognizant of the socioeconomic diversity of the applicants to whom they offer interviews and of their incoming class.

“ When we see this almost dose-dependent association between program acceptance and income, it suggests that whatever measures programs are using are heavily influenced by privilege,” said senior author Dr. Dowin Boatright, who is currently vice chair of research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at New York University Grossman School of Medicine but began this research while an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine. “Directors should try to figure out what criteria are most associated with being a great scientist and a great physician, which hopefully wouldn’t be just socioeconomic status.”

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is an established national initiative, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, and managed by the Council.

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is unique in the Irish research landscape and complements other channels for funded postgraduate education in the Irish ecosystem. Among its features are:

• individual, prestigious awards for excellent research in the name of the applicant;
• an objective selection process using international, independent expert peer review;
• funding across all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology; and
• awards for bottom-up, non-directed research, with the exception of those funded by our strategic funding partners.

Pioneering proposals addressing new and emerging fields of research or those introducing creative, innovative approaches are welcomed. Proposals of an interdisciplinary nature are also encouraged as it is recognised that advancing fundamental understanding is achieved by integrating information, techniques, tools and perspectives from two or more disciplines.

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is highly competitive, with an average success rate of 18% over the past five years. Successful awardees under the programme are recognised as demonstrating world-class potential as future research leaders.

A number of government departments and agencies partner with the Irish Research Council to support the Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme as a mechanism to deliver on shared national objectives. The Irish Research Council’s strategic funding partners for 2024 are:

What we offer

The value of the scholarship will be up to a maximum of €28,000 per annum in any approved year and will consist of the following:

• a stipend of €19,000 per annum;
• a contribution to fees, including non-EU fees, up to a maximum of €5,750 per annum; and
• eligible direct research expenses of €3,250 per annum.

The programme aims at fostering strong, internationally oriented higher education systems in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capacity to contribute to sustainable development. To this end, scholarships are granted for development-related Master or doctoral studies for individuals who plan to pursue a career in teaching and / or research at a higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa. By training future academic and professional leaders, the programme contributes to the following long-term impacts:

• Qualified professionals’ involvement in the solution of development-related problems in Sub-Saharan Africa
• Graduates strengthening education and research in Sub-Saharan Africa
• Structural strengthening and regional networking of partner institutions and partner universities

To achieve these long-term impacts, the following outcomes have been formulated as programme objectives: Programme objective 1: Graduates have qualified to take over responsible positions in their, or for their, region of origin Programme objective 2: The participation of women and underprivileged groups is reinforced Programme objective 3: Organizational, financial and personal capacities of partner institutions are strengthened

As part of the „In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme“ DAAD offers scholarships for PhD and Master studies. The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and aims at university staff in the first line, without neglecting the public sector demand of academically trained personnel.

Who can apply?

The target group for scholarships are graduates and postgraduates from Sub-Saharan Africa with a first academic degree if applying for a Master’s programme, or with a Master’s degree if applying for a doctoral programme who want to pursue Master’s or PhD courses in their home country (so called In-Country scholarships) or in another Sub-Saharan African country (In-Region scholarships). Female applicants and candidates from less privileged regions or groups are especially encouraged to participate in the programme.

Funding is provided for the usual duration of a course – generally, up to two years for Masters and up to three years for the PhD degree programmes

RECOFTC Explore Scholarship 2024 for Young Female PhD Students (up to $40,000)

Applications are open for the RECOFTC Explore Scholarship 2024 . Launched in October 2020, Explore is funded by the Government of Sweden. RECOFTC hosts the network in partnership with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) and in collaboration with universities, research institutes, government and civil society organizations, local communities, and the private sector in Southeast Asia.

Explore amplifies the power of research, aiding Southeast Asian governments and communities in overcoming multiple challenges associated with balancing the different interests within forest landscapes. Explore helps ensure sustainable outcomes by providing knowledge and research evidence to address these challenges.

A key component of Explore’s work is its scholarships for young women PhD students, providing financial support to doctorate students researching forest landscape governance in Southeast Asia. These scholarships aim to promote gender equality, empower individuals, and contribute towards building more inclusive and diverse societies.

• Up to USD $40,000 research funding over three years
• Scientific co-supervision by a RECOFTC or CIFOR-ICRAF senior expert
• Internship opportunities at partner institutions
• Participation in capacity-development programs
• Requirement to publish in high-ranking international journals and present findings at Explore-related events

Eligibility

Applicants from any scientific discipline related to forest landscape governance are welcome. They must be committed to transboundary, interdisciplinary, and participatory action research, integrating gender inclusion and human rights into their approaches. Eligible applicants must:

• Be women PhD students under 32 years old (“Youth” defined by UN) (at the time of enrollment in the PhD program);
• Be citizens of Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar or Timor-Leste;
• Be enrolled at a Southeast Asian university;
• Comply with Explore’s agreement and reporting requirements.

Selection Criteria

• Applicant profile: Comprehensive details on education, research experience, motivation and recommendations.
• Research plan quality: Assessment based on innovativeness, technical feasibility, gender equality integration, potential impact and capacity-development strategies.
• Applicants are required to have proficient English skills for communication purposes.

Bring PhD assessment into the twenty-first century

Research and teaching in today’s universities are unrecognizable compared with what they were in the early nineteenth century, when Germany and later France gave the world the modern research doctorate. And yet significant aspects of the process of acquiring and assessing a doctorate have remained remarkably constant. A minimum of three years of independent study mentored by a single individual culminates in the production of the doctoral thesis — often a magisterial, book-length piece of work that is assessed in an oral examination by a few senior academic researchers. In an age in which there is much research-informed innovation in teaching and learning, the assessment of the doctoral thesis represents a curious throwback that is seemingly impervious to meaningful reform.

But reform is needed. Some doctoral candidates perceive the current assessment system to lack transparency, and examiners report concerns of falling standards ( G. Houston A Study of the PhD Examination: Process, Attributes and Outcomes . PhD thesis, Oxford Univ.; 2018 ). Making the qualification more structured would help — and, equally importantly, would bring the assessment of PhD education in line with education across the board. PhD candidates with experience of modern assessment methods will become better researchers, wherever they work. Indeed, most will not be working in universities: the majority of PhD holders find employment outside academia.

It’s not that PhD training is completely stuck in the nineteenth century. Today’s doctoral candidates can choose from a range of pathways. Professional doctorates, often used in engineering, are jointly supervised by an employer and an academic, and are aimed at solving industry-based problems. Another innovation is PhD by publication, in which, instead of a final thesis on one or more research questions, the criterion for an award is a minimum number of papers published or accepted for publication. In some countries, doctoral students are increasingly being trained in cohorts, with the aim of providing a less isolating experience than that offered by the conventional supervisor–student relationship. PhD candidates are also encouraged to acquire transferable skills — for example, in data analysis, public engagement, project management or business, economics and finance. The value of such training would be even greater if these skills were to be formally assessed alongside a dissertation rather than seen as optional.

And yet, most PhDs are still assessed after the production of a final dissertation, according to a format that, at its core, has not changed for at least half a century, as speakers and delegates noted at an event in London last month on PhD assessment, organized by the Society for Research in Higher Educatio n. Innovations in assessment that are common at other levels of education are struggling to find their way into the conventional doctoral programme.

Take the concept of learning objectives. Intended to aid consistency, fairness and transparency, learning objectives are a summary of what a student is expected to know and how they will be assessed, and are given at the start of a course of study. Part of the ambition is also to help tutors to keep track of their students’ learning and take remedial action before it is too late.

PhD training is no longer fit for purpose — it needs reform now

Formative assessment is another practice that has yet to find its way into PhD assessment consistently. Here, a tutor evaluates a student’s progress at the mid-point of a course and gives feedback or guidance on what students need to do to improve ahead of their final, or summative, assessment. It is not that these methods are absent from modern PhDs; a conscientious supervisor will not leave candidates to sink or swim until the last day. But at many institutions, such approaches are not required of PhD supervisors.

Part of the difficulty is that PhD training is carried out in research departments by people who do not need to have teaching qualifications or awareness of innovations based on education research. Supervisors shouldn’t just be experts in their field, they should also know how best to convey that subject knowledge — along with knowledge of research methods — to their students.

It is probably not possible for universities to require all doctoral supervisors to have teaching qualifications. But there are smaller changes that can be made. At a minimum, doctoral supervisors should take the time to engage with the research that exists in the field of PhD education, and how it can apply to their interactions with students.

There can be no one-size-fits-all solution to improving how a PhD is assessed, because different subjects often have bespoke needs and practices ( P. Denicolo Qual. Assur. Educ. 11 , 84–91; 2003 ). But supervisors and representatives of individual subject communities must continue to discuss what is most appropriate for their disciplines.

All things considered, there is benefit to adopting a more structured approach to PhD assessment. It is high time that PhD education caught up with changes that are now mainstream at most other levels of education. That must start with a closer partnership between education researchers, PhD supervisors and organizers of doctoral-training programmes in universities. This partnership will benefit everyone — PhD supervisors and doctoral students coming into the research workforce, whether in universities or elsewhere.

Education and training in research has entered many secondary schools, along with undergraduate teaching, which is a good thing. In the spirit of mutual learning, research doctoral supervisors, too, will benefit by going back to school.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

• ­meet the conditions stipulated in the "Guidelines for the Selection of Overseas Students Sponsored by the China Scholarship Council for the Current year"
• have a solid professional foundation, strong learning and research abilities, communication skills, excellent academic performance, outstanding work achievements, and strong potential for development
• be under 35 years old (born after January 1, 1988)

Selection criteria

In awarding the China Scholarship Council Visiting PhD Scholar program, the China Scholarship Council will consider applicants who:

• are outstanding full-time doctoral students from Chinese universities or research institutions who hold a Letter of Offer from the University of Melbourne at the time of application
• have graduated with a major in English at the undergraduate level or above
• have studied abroad in an English-speaking country for one academic year (8-12 months) or worked continuously for one year or more within the last ten years.
• have passed the National Foreign Language Proficiency Test (WSK).
• have achieved the following scores on the IELTS (Academic) or TOEFL exam: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL (IBT) 95.
• have completed advanced English training courses organized by the Ministry of Education's designated overseas study training department and obtained a certificate of completion.
• have passed interviews, exams, or other tests organized by the University of Melbourne and met its admission language requirements, in which case the University of Melbourne will issue a separate English proficiency certificate; for those who meet the University of Melbourne's admission language requirements through other language tests (including the TOEFL iBT Home Edition and IELTS Indicator), they must submit their scores and a certificate from the school recognizing the language test.
• Applicants must apply to the University of Melbourne's Study Abroad Research program (SA-RES), flagging CSC Visiting PhD funding and obtain supervisor support
• Upon receiving a letter of offer from the University of Melbourne, applicants must complete the online application to the China Scholarship Council as per the CSC website .
• Visiting PhD scholars may commence their visit from June 2024, and admitted individuals will complete dispatch procedures according to the requirements of the China Scholarship Counil and the University of Melbourne.

What are the benefits?
