Lego is moving on from its Mindstorms educational robots
It’s spiking the brand, and focusing on its lego education brand..

As reported by Lego fan sites like Brick Fanatics and Brickset , Lego is discontinuing its Mindstorms kits, which are meant to let people make robots out of Lego bricks, pins, beams, motors, gears, and other pieces, and then program using Lego’s control hubs ( via Gizmodo ). The devices have been sold as a way to let children and adults easily build and program robots since 1998 .
While the company isn’t completely done with the idea of educational robotics kits, it will stop selling its Mindstorms Robot Inventor kit by the end of this year.
- Lego’s new Mindstorms EV3 robotics platform comes with Android and iOS support
The company’s statements suggest there’s an end date on its support for the various apps used to program and control Mindstorms robots on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Fire OS, saying that it’ll keep them going until “at least the end of 2024.” That doesn’t mean that the robot control units will necessarily become useless bricks. There are open-source tools for writing and uploading code to them that aren’t made by Lego, though a lack of official tools could make things more difficult for younger or inexperienced builders.
People with Mindstorms kits may need to get creative to program them — but that’s the point of Lego.
According to the statement posted by Brickset , Lego will have the Mindstorms team working on other parts of the business, though it didn’t provide specifics as to what they’d be doing. Lego didn’t immediately reply to The Verge ’s request for comment.
For those paying attention, the move isn’t necessarily a surprise: when the company retired its Mindstorms EV3 system last year, it pointed customers towards its Lego Education Spike kit rather than the Mindstorms Robot Inventor kit that was also available. Currently, the latter is the only thing on the Mindstorms section of Lego’s site , and it’s listed as “temporarily out of stock.” The Spike Prime kit, however, is still available, and Lego says that platform is currently its plan for supporting its “build and code” idea.

Kind of good.
When I first started using this app things went fine with the main ev3 models but when I started making my own robots I realized how bad this program actually is. I made the electric guitar model and coding it was the most painful thing to do. The sound was the stupidest thing because it didn’t go by hertz it went by some random number and a piano keyboard. This app can be good for basic robots but for more complex robots it’s garbage. PLEASE BRING THE OLD APP IT WAS MUCH BETTER.
A promising start but...
I am using this app in a middle school classroom with 1:1 iPads. So far the app has been running well (mostly) and has been easy for kids to navigate. The user interface is nice and the ability to view sensor data in real time is excellent for troubleshooting and programming. Issue 1: There have been a few occurrences of robots being sent the start running command and then executing different code than what was in the app. For example, a simple command to turn in a circle (+/- motor power for x rotations) resulted in the robot driving forward a meter and then making a gradual turn. This was tested with multiple EV3s connected at different times to the same iPad running the app with the same result. We attempted restarting the app and iPad with no change. We reinstalled the firmware and replaced the wires on the robots, no change. The same code on a different iPad resulted in the program running as expected. At other times the connected EV3 would start running the program without the user pressing the play button. I know this sounds like another device was connecting or controlling the EV3 but that was not the case, the code as downloaded to the EV3 was incorrect. Uninstalling the app and reinstalling it after a restart seemed to fix both of these issues for now but it seems like this is a bug that needs to be addressed. Issue 2: The app can be very slow in downloading and sending the run command to robots even with simple programs without sound or graphics included. This seems a bit unpredictable. Issue 3: As far as I can tell there is no way to record sounds or customize screen graphics at this time. This would be an excellent addition in future versions.
No problems
I don’t see any problems with this app as it works completely fine with my Lego ev3 set.

Spark Engagement with LEGO® Education Activities for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse
PR Newswire
BILLUND, Denmark, March 13, 2024
Educators and LEGO ® Education collaborate on activities, using real-world connections to engage and excite students and teachers
BILLUND, Denmark, March 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, LEGO® Education released the LEGO Education Eclipse Collection , a set of hands-on student activities that build on the excitement before, during, and after the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. As teachers and administrators seek ways to engage and motivate students, real-world connections—like the eclipse—make learning more relevant, memorable, and engaging.
"Drawing tangible connections to the real world, and possibly even future careers, is a powerful way to engage students," said Dr. Jenny Nash, Head of Education Impact U.S. for LEGO Education.
Created by and for teachers, the special collection includes activities, classroom slides, and plenty of tips and inspiration for schools everywhere to turn this rare occurrence into a lasting learning experience. Students will explore scientific phenomena using LEGO Education solutions, LEGO® bricks, or any materials available in the classroom as they:
- Design and engineer a model to simulate an eclipse using motion and light principles.
- Design a mobile observatory for viewing the eclipse on the go.
- Graph the amount of darkness and light in a month.
- Explain what happens if a light source is blocked or diminished.
- Observe the effect of light on objects in a darkened space.
The collection features activities created by educators and LEGO Education Ambassadors Jillian Johnson and Daniel Buhrow, who share a passion for using real-world moments as a tool for student engagement in their classrooms.
"Bringing real-world connections into the classroom not only engages my students, but also helps me grow as an educator," said Buhrow, a teacher at McKinney Independent School District in Texas. Buhrow, who will be in the path of totality, is excited to teach this content because it helps him build relationships and connections with his students. "It transforms our classrooms into a dynamic and interactive space where learning extends beyond the textbook," he said.
Johnson, an Orange County (FL) Public Schools STEM educator, has seen firsthand how with this approach students become more engaged and excited to learn – the goal of any educator. "Connecting standards with real-world applications is my favorite thing to do as a teacher!" Johnson said. "This is when I see my students truly make sense of the bits and pieces of knowledge."
