Although the little man does not like it, he agrees to do so. He begins working in right earnest but faces one difficulty. Quite often, the elf keeps asking Patrick for help during his homework.

For instance, he asks Patrick for a dictionary. After that, he asks him to look up a word and speak the spellings out loudly. Similarly, it is the same as Math or even worse. Thus, Patrick sits beside him to guide him at all times.

He goes to the library and gets books and reads them out to the little man. Thus, the elf writes down those points in his homework. Come to think of it, Patrick does the hard work himself.

When the time arrives of the final day, the elf is free to go. The results come out and Patrick scores the A grade. This leaves the classmates amazed as well as the teachers. Even his parents wonder how he turned into such a model kid.

Therefore, Patrick does actually develop a whole new attitude. While Patrick thinks that the elf completed his homework, it was actually Patrick himself completing it all along.

Patrick was very happy. He called himself lucky, man. He asked a little man to do all his homework for 35 days. The little man has shown displeasure. But he has agreed to keep his promise. The tiny man, however, did not know much about English and math. Well, he needed help. Patrick has read the dictionary. He had to sit down beside the man to guide him. He brought a lot of books to the library. He worked very hard to solve all of the problems.

The elf left after 35 days. Patrick had a good grade in all subjects. Now, he was a changed boy. He had become a gentle, ideal boy. He still thought that he had made the little man do all his homework. But, in fact, he did it himself.

Patrick's Homework? 1. Patrick never completed his homework. “Too boring,” he remarked. He enjoyed hockey, basketball, and Nintendo. His professors said, “Patrick! Do your homework or you won’t learn.” He did occasionally feel stupid. But how? He loathed schoolwork. 2. He snatched a doll from his cat one day. It was a little guy, not a toy. He wore an old-fashioned cap and a wool shirt. Save me! Keep me away from that cat. I'll fulfil your dream." 3. Patrick couldn’t believe his luck! This solved his issues. He answered, “Only if you do all my homework until the end of the semester; that’s 35 days. If you perform well, I could earn A's.” 4. The small man's face wrinkled like a dishcloth in the hamper. He stomped his knees and doubled his fists, scowling and pursing his lips. “Oh, am I cursed! I’ll do it.” 5. The elf did Patrick's homework as promised. One issue. Elf needs aid. Help me! Help me! Patrick must assist. “I don’t know this word,” the elf gasped when reading Patrick’s assignment. Dictionary, please. Better still, look up the term and hear it out letter by letter. 6. There was once a boy whose name was Patrick and he was more interested in playing football, basket ball, and Nintendo, instead of completing his homework. He found doing homework is kind of boring. Though his teacher scolded him and said that he wouldn’t doing his homework.

One day Patrick found his cat playing with a little doll. But he found on closely observing that it was not a doll but a small sized man. The little man wearing a woollen shirt, a tall hat and breeches. He was in trouble and needed help to get his life saved from cat. The elf promised to grant wish to Patrick as he saved his life.

Patrick was very happy and called himself lucky. He wished that the little man will do all his homework for all 35 days. And the little man started helping Patrick on his homework. But he did not know everything, so he would called Patrick for help.

Elf don’t have any knowledge of Math and English. Patrick consulted from dictionary and sits next to him to guide him. He also worked very hard to solve the Problems and brought lots of books from library. So, Patrick helped the Elf everyday to complete his homework. In a way Patrick started working very hard.

After 35 days Elf left but Patrick got ‘A’ grade in all his subjects. He was completely changed into a gentle and ideal boy. Everyone was amazed. His friends, teachers and also his parents. But at the end of the day Patrick thought that because of the little elf help he could complete his homework. But it was not true, we all knew Patrick did his homework on his own, and got good grades.

Patrick, who was a clever little boy, enjoyed playing basketball, hockey and Nintendo but never cared about his homework. His teachers warned him that if he continued ignoring his homework, he would learn nothing and fall back in his semester. Patrick himself felt out of place sometimes because he did not know about the things his friends in school did. He saw himself as a big ‘ignoramus’, but he was still not bothered enough to focus on any studies. Outdoor sports were fun and interesting for him but sitting at home and doing homework was something that he hated!

Patrick had a cat who had a habit of playing with his toys. One day, he found the cat playing with a little doll. Before the cat could chew and damage it, Patrick snatched the doll away from the cat. Then he realized that the cat was not playing with a doll. Actually, it was a tiny person who was trying to get away from the cat. The tiny man seemed afraid of the cat and pleaded to Patrick to keep the cat away. Patrick noticed what the little man was wearing, and he became curious. He wore a little wool shirt with old-fashioned britches and a tall high hat that looked like a witch’s top hat. The tiny man shouted out to Patrick for help – ‘Save me! Don’t give me back to that cat’. In return for this favor, the little man claimed to be an elf made Patrick a promise. The elf promised that he would fulfill one wish for Patrick to save him from the cat.

Patrick saw this incident as a golden opportunity to avoid doing homework for the rest of the semester. His semester was to end in the next thirty-five days, and he asked the elf to do his homework for him till then. If the elf really tried, he could earn some good grades like an A for his homework. This was the one condition set for Patrick’s help that the elf had to agree with. He wrinkled his nose in displeasure at the thought of doing homework but decided to do it. So, for the remaining thirty-five days of the semester, Patrick thought that he wouldn’t have to do any homework, and he was pleased with his good fortune.

The elf kept his promise and started going through Patrick’s schoolbooks to do his homework. However, there was still one problem that needed to be solved. The elf could not understand what was written in the books as he did not belong to the world of humans. He did not know history or maths, and he seemed confused about these subjects. At such times, he would call out to Patrick for help and poor Patrick, who thought he was free to play as much as he wanted, had to help the elf complete the given homework instead. When the elf needed to know the meanings of some words, he would ask Patrick to get the dictionary for him.

Once the little boy got the dictionary for the elf, he would make a new request – ‘look up the word and sound it out by each letter. The elf was relentless; he never allowed Patrick to catch a break. When it came to Maths, the elf was completely surprised! He kept asking what are times tables, fractions, multiplication, and division? All these concepts were unfamiliar to him. The loud elf got even louder as the homework became more difficult. He ordered Patrick to get him more and more books from the school library and asked him to read them out. Since the elves never needed all this, he required constant help from Patrick to solve all the questions.

The elf kept the boy on his toes, and it was clear that Patrick was working harder than ever. Due to the nagging and screaming of the elf, Patrick would stay up nights to complete his homework. He soon became tired and weary, and his eyes were swollen from studying so much. He had to go to school with puffy eyes, and he felt too exhausted. At last, the final day of school arrived, and the elf realized he had fulfilled his promise to Patrick. There was no more homework to do, and the elf planned his escape. When no one was looking, the elf quietly and slyly moved out the back door towards his freedom.

As for Patrick, he got an A grade in all his subjects. His parents, friends, and teachers were both surprised and proud of him. They were all praising him and wondering how he became so sincere in his studies. Since he was admired by everybody, Patrick’s behavior changed, and he became a really good boy. He cleaned his room, helped his parents with extra work, and even changed his attitude. The new Patrick was never rude to anybody and was always happy and polite. In the end, we come to know that all the hard work for the school homework was actually done by Patrick himself and the elf really did nothing. The elf had simply tricked him into giving his best. Introduction

This chapter tells the story of a schoolboy named Patrick, who hates homework. But eventually, he scores good grades in his class and also learns other good habits.

Patrick is a schoolboy. Like many students, he fears and dislikes homework. He chooses to play games instead of completing the work his teachers assign. Due to this, he is scolded in school as well as at home. This continues until one day Patrick finds an elf, that is, a tiny toy man who requests to be saved from Patrick’s cat, in return for a wish. Patrick saves the elf and expresses his wish.

He wishes to get all his homework done by the elf till the semester ends. The elf grows angry but grants the wish. But being an elf, he lacks the knowledge required to spell words correctly. Neither does he know mathematics tables, nor can he perform addition and subtraction operations. He also claims to have no knowledge of history.

Due to this, Patrick is made to do all the work. This way, he does most of the work himself. His hard work is paid off at the end of the semester as he scores an ‘A’ grade. Not only this, he also becomes an ideal child with good habits of cleanliness and polite behaviour. This leaves his classmates, teachers and parents surprised. 

Patrick’s story shows how a person can achieve success by being hard-working and self-dependent. It is revealed at the end that the elf man was only a figment of Patrick’s imagination. In reality, the transformation is caused by Patrick’s own efforts. This answers the titular question “Who did Patrick’s homework?” and teaches the value of self-help.

Patrick hated doing homework. He found it boring. He was interested in playing games. He played, hockey, basketball and Nintendo. His teachers warned him that he must do homework. Otherwise he would remain an ignorant person. Sometimes, he really felt that he was so. But somehow, Patrick could not help it.

One day Patrick found his cat playing with a little doll. He took the doll away. To his surprise, he found that the doll was, in fact, a little man. This man wore old-fashioned britches. His hat was tall like a witch’s. That little man cried, “Save me”. In return he promised to grant Patrick a wish.

Patrick saved the little man. He was much pleased. He asked the little man to do all his homework till the end of the semester. That way he could get A’s. The little man didn’t like it, yet he agreed to do so. He began his work in right earnest. However, there was one difficulty. Very often, he needed Patrick’s help ir doing the homework properly.

Sometimes, the elf would ask for a dictionary. He would request Patrick to look up a word and speak its spellings loudly. When it came to Math, it was even worse. The elf did not know much of it. So, Patrick had to sit beside him and guide him all the time. It was the same thing with History. Patrick had to go to the library, get the books and read them out to the elf. Then the elf would write those points in his homework answer-book.

Patrick had to do much hardwork. Finally, the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go. The homework had, of course, been completed. Patrick got his A’s. His classmates were amazed and his teachers smiled. His parents wondered how their son had become such a model kid. Patrick had, indeed, developed a whole new attitude.

Of course, Patrick thought that the elf had done his homework. But the truth is that he was all along doing it himself.

एक दिन पैट्रिक ने अपनी बिल्ली को एक छोटी सी गुड़िया से खेलते देखा। वह गुड़िया को वहाँ से दूर ले गया। तब उसने हैरानी से देखा कि वह गुड़िया तो वास्तव में एक बहुत छोटा मनुष्य थी। यह आदमी पुराने ढंग का नेकर पहने था। उसका टोप किसी जादूगरनी के टोप की तरह लम्बा था। वह छोटा आदमी चिल्लाया, “मुझे बचा लो”। इसके बदले में उसने पैट्रिक की किसी एक इच्छा को पूरा करने का वचन दिया।

पैट्रिक ने उस छोटे आदमी को बचा लिया। वह बहुत खुश हुआ। उसने उस छोटे आदमी से कहा कि वह उसका सारा होमवर्क उस सैमिस्टर के अंत तक करता रहे। इस प्रकार उसे A ग्रेड मिल सकते थे। उस छोटे आदमी को यह बात अच्छी नहीं लगी फिर भी उसने ऐसा करना स्वीकार कर लिया। उसने पूरी ईमानदारी से अपना काम प्रारंभ कर दिया। पर एक कठिनाई थी। होमवर्क ठीक से करने के लिये उसे प्रायः पैट्रिक की सहायता की जरूरत पड़ती थी।

कभी-कभी उस बौने को शब्दकोश की ज़रूरत होती थी। वह पैट्रिक से उसमें किसी शब्द को देखकर जोर-जोर से उसके स्पेलिंग पढ़ने को कहता। गणित की बारी आने पर स्थिति और भी विकट हो जाती थी। बौने को गणित कम आती थी। अत: पैट्रिक को उसके पास बैठकर सारा समय उसका मार्गदर्शन करना पड़ता था। इतिहास के साथ भी कुछ ऐसा ही था। पैट्रिक को पुस्तकालय जाकर किताबें लानी पड़तीं और उन्हें बौने को पढ़-पढ़ कर सुनाना होता। तब बौना उन बातों को उसके होमवर्क की कापी पर लिख देता था।

पैट्रिक को बड़ा श्रम करना पड़ रहा था। अंततः स्कूल जाने का अंतिम दिन आ गया और बौना अब वहाँ से जाने के लिये आजाद था। हाँ, होमवर्क तो पूरा हो ही चुका था। पैट्रिक को अपने A ग्रेड मिल गये। उसके सहपाठी चकित थे और शिक्षक प्रसन्न थे। उसके माँ-बाप हैरान थे कि कैसे उनका बेटा ऐसा आदर्श बालक बन गया था। पैट्रिक का नजरिया, वाकई पूरी तरह बदल चुका था।

निस्संदेह, पैट्रिक सोच रहा था कि उसका होमवर्क बौने ने किया था। किंतु सच यह था कि सारा समय वह स्वयं ही तो उसे कर रहा था।

Introduction

This is a story about an intelligent but lazy boy named Patrick. He hated his homework. One day he found an elf and saved it from the cat and in return, the elf promised him to grant a wish. Patrick asked him to do his homework. The elf smartly made Patrick work harder than before and it improved his performance in studies.

Who Did Patrick’s Homework Line by Line Explanation

PATRICK never did homework. “Too boring,” he said. He played hockey and basketball and Nintendo instead. His teachers told him, “Patrick! Do your homework or you won’t learn a thing.” And it’s true, sometimes he did feel like an ignoramus. But what could he do? He hated homework.

Explanation: Patrick never completed his homework because he feels it was boring. Instead of completing homework, he liked to play games like basketball, hockey and video games like Nintendo. His teachers told him to complete his homework otherwise he will not learn anything. It was true because sometimes he feels completely ignorant but he was helpless as he did like to do homework.

Then one day he found his cat playing with a little doll and he grabbed it away. To his surprise, it wasn’t a doll at all, but a man of the tiniest size. He had a little wool shirt with old-fashioned britches and a tall hat much like a witch’s. He yelled, “Save me! Don’t give me back to that cat. I’ll grant you a wish, I promise you that.”

Explanation: Then one day an unexpected thing happened, his cat was playing with a doll, he took it away and was surprised to know it wasn’t a cat but a man of the smallest size (elf). He was wearing a woollen shirt, old-fashioned short trousers and a long witch-like hat. He shouted for help and request Patrick to save him from the cat and in return he promised Patrick a wish.

Patrick couldn’t believe his luck to have the answer to all of his problems here. He said, “Only if you do all my homework till the end of the semester, that’s 35 days. If you do a good enough job, I could even get A’s.”

Explanation: Patrick was not able to believe his luck because he has found answers to all his problems related to homework. He asked the tiny man if he will save him from the cat only if f he could do his homework till the end of the semester, which is 35 days and help him to score A’s in his homework.

The little man’s face wrinkled like a dishcloth thrown in the hamper. He kicked his legs and doubled his fists and he grimaced and scowled and pursed his lips, “Oh, am I cursed! But I’ll do it.”

Explanation: When the little man heard this, his face frowned and looked like a cloth used for washing dishes. His actions showed that he was unhappy to do the work. He kicked his legs and doubled his fists and his facial expression shows his refusal for the work. The tiny man felt unfortunate but he agreed to complete the work.

And true to his word, that little elf began to do Patrick’s homework. Except there was one glitch. The elf didn’t always know what to do and he needed help. “Help me! Help me!” he’d say. And Patrick would have to help — in whatever way. “I don’t know this word,” the elf squeaked while reading Patrick’s homework. “Get me a dictionary. No, what’s even better is look up the word and sound it out by each letter.”

Explanation: The elf kept his word and started doing homework for Patrick. There was an issue with the elf, he didn’t know what to do and so have to seek help from Patrick and he used to cry for help. Patrick had to help him in every possible manner. While doing Patrick’s homework, the elf asked for a dictionary or some other thing better that would help him with the meaning and pronunciation of a word.

When it came to maths, Patrick was out of luck. “What are times tables?” the elf shrieked. “We elves never need that. And addition and subtraction and division and fractions? Here, sit down beside me, you simply must guide me.” Elves know nothing of human history, to them it’s a mystery. So, the little elf, already a shouter, just got louder. “Go to the library, I need books. More and more books. And you can help me read them too.”

Explanation: Patrick was unfortunate in terms of mathematics. The elf was completely clueless about it. He knew nothing about it. He doesn’t know about timetables because elves never needed all these mathematical things like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or fractions etc. The elf asked Patrick to sit beside him and guide him to solve the mathematical problems. Also, he does not know about human history, as it was like a complete mystery for him. He shouted loudly at Patrick and asked him to go to the library and bring more books and also help him to read them.

As a matter of fact, every day in every way that little elf was a nag! Patrick was working harder than ever and was it a drag! He was staying up nights, had never felt so weary, was going to school with his eyes puffed and bleary.

Explanation: In a real sense, the little elf was a very cunning fellow. He was making Patrick work in every manner. Patrick was working harder than before to help the elf. He was working for late hours at night. He never felt so tired before because he never worked so hard before. He went to school with dull and swollen eyes.

Finally, the last day of school arrived and the elf was free to go.  As for homework, there was no more, so he quietly and slyly slipped out the back door.

Explanation: At last, the last day of school had arrived and the little elf had completed all the homework and was free to go now. There was no more homework to do, so little elf without saying a word secretively moved out of the back door .

Patrick got his A’s; his classmates were amazed; his teachers smiled and were full of praise. And his parents wondered what had happened to Patrick? He was now the model kid who Cleaned his room, did his chores, was cheerful, never rude like he had developed a whole new attitude.

Explanation: Patrick scored A grades in his homework. His classmates were surprised, teachers were happy and full of praise for him and his parents were astonished to see the change in Patrick. He was now a disciplined kid who cleaned his room himself and did all his work. His behaviour has changed a lot and he became a happy child and was not rude and it seemed that he has developed a whole new self in him.

You see, in the end, Patrick still thought he’d made that tiny man do all his homework. But I’ll share a secret, just between you and me. It wasn’t the elf; Patrick had done it himself!

Explanation: Till the end of the story Patrick still feels that he had made the elf work for him but the truth is, it was all Patrick who did his work. The elf prompted him and made him work.

C. Rewrite the following incomplete sentences carefully, so that the reader does not have to guess what is left out.

Ans. It is about homework of children and Laws against child Labour. In this cartoon, a child is advised to complete his homework and stop reading a book about The Laws Against Child Labour.

• Do you find it funny? If so, why?

Ans. Yes, it’s funny because it stops the child from reading the law against child labour. It is a satire on child labour.

• Do you think a cartoon is a serious drawing? Why or why not?

Ans. No, I don’t think this cartoon is a serious drawing because it shows the theme in a funny manner.

He takes the doll away, only to discover that it is not a doll, but a small man. The man is dressed in traditional britches and a witch-sized hat. The little man cries for help and begs him to save him. In return, the little man agrees to grant Patrick’s wish. Patrick saves the little man and is overjoyed to receive his one wish. He asks him to finish all of his homework before the semester ends. Although the little man dislikes it, he agrees. Frequently, the elf asks Patrick for help with his homework. He asks him to look up a word and pronounce the spellings aloud.

As a result, Patrick always sits beside him, guiding him. He goes to the library, gets books, and reads them to the little man. As a result, the elf records these points in his homework. Actually, Patrick does the hard work himself. The results are in, and Patrick has received an A. Patrick actually develops a completely new attitude. While Patrick believes the elf completed his homework, it was actually Patrick who completed it all along.

Conclusion of Who Did Patrick’s Homework Summary

Who did Patrick’s homework? Summary teaches us that the key to success is simply hard work. We must always do our own work, and self-help can be extremely beneficial.
