Benefits of Science

Science very efficiently plays the role of being a faithful servant of man. In every walk of life, science is there to serve us. We require the benefits of science whether in our home, in office, in a factory, or outside.

Gone are the days when only wealthy people could afford luxuries. Science has made many luxurious items of the past cheaper in price and has brought them within the reach of everybody.

Computer technology is one huge benefit of science. Nowadays, it would be unimaginable to consider living without computing technology.

A huge number of professions now rely totally on the computer and the internet. Besides, the computer and the internet have become our biggest source of entertainment in our everyday life.

Automobiles, an important scientific invention, has made our lives easy by significantly reducing everyday commuting time. The air conditioner is another scientific invention that has made our lives bearable and comfortable in the face of extreme weather conditions. Also, in the field of medical science, high-quality medicines are available that quickly remove any ailment that can happen in everyday life like headache, sprain, cough, allergy, stomach ache, fatigue etc.

Dark Side of Science

In spite of its tremendous benefits, there is a negative side to science. Science, unfortunately, has also done some disservice to humanity due to some of its inventions.

One of the biggest harms that science has brought to humanity is in the field of armament. Although some hail the invention of gunpowder as a great achievement, humanity must rue the day when this invention happened.

Steadily and relentlessly, the use and perfection of gunpowder have taken place in many new and more destructive weapons. As such, humanity now suffers due to weapons like shells, bombs, artillery, and guns. Such weapons threaten the everyday life of all individuals.

Another disservice of science has been the emission of pollution. A huge amount of radioactive pollution is emitted in various parts of the world where nuclear energy production happens. Such pollution is very dangerous as it can cause cancer, radioactive sickness, and cardiovascular disease.

Of course, who can ignore the massive amount of air pollution caused by automobiles, another scientific invention. Furthermore, automobiles are an everyday part of our lives that emit unimaginable levels of carbon monoxide in the air every year. Consequently, this causes various lung diseases and also contributes to global warming and acid rain.

Science writing and new media: science writing for the public, the science of everyday life.

This short, informal essay gives you a chance to satisfy your curiosity about the science of something close at hand, while at the same time practicing writing clear explanations and engaging your audience.

  • Class #3 : Proposal Due
  • Class #4 : Rough Draft Due, Workshop
  • Class #5 : Group Member Responses Due
  • Class #7 : Revised Essay Due

Instructions

Here’s an opportunity to satisfy your curiosity about the science of something close at hand, something we encounter every day but to which most of us are blissfully oblivious. Write a short essay on an aspect of “everyday” science or technology that you would enjoy sharing with readers. Though you will have to do some research, this is not meant to be written as a research essay. You will keep quotes to a minimum and mostly summarize or paraphrase your sources, just as if you were writing for a general interest magazine.

Some possible topics:

  • How my guitar or cello makes music…
  • How my bicycle, DVR, or contact lenses work…
  • Chemistry of making bread, or grilling steak…
  • Why my dog likes to play catch; why my canary sings…
  • Materials engineering or physics of my tennis racket, Razor scooter, skateboard…
  • Why hurricanes or tornadoes occur when & where they do…
  • A scientific principle…

This essay must be accurate and clear, but that’s just the beginning. You aren’t writing a technical manual but, rather, an informal essay. So you must fascinate your reader, keep her or him reading, convince them that your topic matters. Some suggestions:

  • Begin by choosing a topic that genuinely interests you. If you aren’t interested, your reader won’t be, either.
  • Form a question or a series of questions about your topic to make your research efficient and to give your essay a shape. For example, Why does barbecued meat taste so good? What makes it taste different than meat cooked on a stove? or What allows my watch to tell time accurately? What makes it waterproof? Why are there so many puffy white clouds on summer days?
  • Note that you aren’t writing a history of the science or technology involved—you are explaining how something works.
  • As you write your essay, aim to present your information in a way that makes it easy for the reader to follow.
  • To make your subject easier to grasp and to interest readers, you’ll probably want to begin your essay with an anecdote or a problem from personal experience. You may continue to use personal experience in your essay if it helps you relate your ideas to readers. You may also find metaphors or analogies useful in explaining your topic.

Using sources: When you draw on sources for your essay, you must use your own language, not theirs. If you cannot summarize or paraphrase (i.e., significantly change the wording) then use quotation marks and name the source in your text. For example: As the Engineering Handbook notes, tensile strength “is best defined as…” DO NOT, however, use lengthy quotations—they will spoil the tone and rhythm of your essay.

Revising Your Essay

  • Re-read all the comments you’ve received on your Science of Everyday Life essay, from classmates & instructor, and any notes you made.
  • Re-read your essay, with the notes in mind.
  • Consider: To revise means literally (etymologically) to “re-see”—to take stock of your essay’s meaning and its possibilities, and to do what it takes to achieve meaning for yourself, and meaning and pleasure in reading for your audience. So aim to re-see your essay and its potential. Don’t limit yourself to making line edits (copy editing): by itself, that’s not revision.
  • Think especially about shaping your essay, so that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. And about clarity: that’s key to the success of this kind of essay.

Make sure to hand in your first drafts—the ones with comments—along with your new one. Also respond to these questions and hand in with your draft:

  • What has changed in this draft? Please point to specific things.
  • What’s the main focus in this draft?
  • What do you like best about this essay?

Science and Technology: Impact on Human Life Essay

Introduction, part i: science in personal and professional life, part ii: science and technology in a multicultural world.

Science plays an important role in everyday life, and people depend on technologies in a variety of ways by creating, using, and improving them regularly. Sometimes, a person hardly notes how inevitable the impact of science can be on personal or professional life. Evaluating such technologies as the Internet, smartphones, notebooks, smartwatches, and brain-medicine interfaces helps recognize their positive and negative outcomes compared to the period when traditional lifestyles and natural resources like ginger were highly appreciated.

Most people are confident in their independence and neglect multiple technologies that determine their lives. During the last 25 years, technology has dramatically changed human interactions (Muslin, 2020). In addition to domestic technological discoveries like washing machines and stoves, four technologies, namely, the Internet, smartphones, notebooks, and smartwatches, are used throughout the day. Despite their evident advantages in communication, data exchange, and connection, some negative impacts should not be ignored.

Regarding my personal life changes, these technologies provoke mental health changes such as depression. I prefer to avoid my dependence on all these technologies that imperceptibly shape everyday activities. However, I constantly check my vitals, messengers, and calls not to miss something important. On the one hand, this idea of control helps improve my life and makes it logical. On the other hand, I am concerned about such relationships with technologies in my life. Similar negative impacts on society emerge when people prefer to communicate virtually instead of paying attention to reality. Technologies compromise social relationships because individuals are eager to choose something easier that requires less movement or participation, neglecting their unique chances to live a real life. They also challenge even the environment because either smartwatches or notebooks need energy that is associated with air pollution, climate change, and other harmful emissions (Trefil & Hazen, 2016). Modern technologies facilitate human life, but health, social, and environmental outcomes remain dangerous.

Thinking about my day, I cannot imagine another scientific discovery that makes this life possible except the Internet. Today, more devices have become connected to the Internet, including cars, appliances, and personal computers (Thompson, 2016). With time, people get an opportunity to use the Internet for multiple purposes to store their personal information, business documentation, music, and other files that have a meaning in their lives. The Internet defines the quality of human relationships, starting with healthcare data about a child and ending with online photos after the person’s death.

Although the Internet was invented at the end of the 1980s, this technology was implemented for everyday use in the middle of the 1990s. All people admired such possibilities as a connection across the globe, increased job opportunities, regular information flows, a variety of choices, online purchases, and good education opportunities (Olenski, 2018). It was a true belief that the Internet made society free from real-life boundaries and limitations. However, with time, its negative sides were revealed, including decreased face-to-face engagement, laziness, and the promotion of inappropriate content (Olenski, 2018). When people prefer their virtual achievements and progress but forget about real obligations like parenting, education, or keeping a healthy lifestyle, the Internet is no longer a positive scientific discovery but a serious problem.

Many discussions are developed to identify the overall impact of the Internet as a major scientific discovery. Modern people cannot imagine a day without using the Internet for working, educational, or personal purposes. However, when online life becomes someone’s obsession, the negatives prevail over its positives. Therefore, the human factor and real-life preferences should always be recognized and promoted. During the pandemic, the Internet is a priceless contribution that helps deal with isolation and mental health challenges. Some people cannot reach each other because of family issues or business trips, and the Internet is the only reliable and permanent means of connection. Thus, such positives overweight the negatives overall if everything is used rationally.

The Internet makes it possible for healthcare providers to exchange their knowledge and experiences from different parts of the world. This possibility explains the spread of the westernized high-tech research approach to medical treatment and the promotion of science in a multicultural care world. Biomedical research changes the way how people are diagnosed and treated. Recent genomic discoveries help predict the possibility of cancer and human predisposition to other incurable diseases to improve awareness of health conditions. The benefit of new brain-interface technologies (BMI) is life improvement for disabled people to move their prosthetics easily (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016). Instead of staying passive, individuals use smart technology to hold subjects, open doors, and receive calls. BMI has a high price, but its impact is priceless. At the same time, some risks of high-tech research exist in medical treatment. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (2016) underlines damaged neurons and fibers depend on what drugs are delivered to the system and how. The transmission of electrical signals is not always stable, and the safety of BMI processes is hardly guaranteed.

Some populations reject technologies in medical treatment and prefer to use natural resources to stabilize their health. For example, ginger is characterized by several positive clinical applications in China. Researchers believe that this type of alternative medicine effectively manages nausea, vomiting, and dizziness (Anh et al., 2020). Its major advantage is reported by pregnant patients who use ginger to predict morning sickness, unnecessary inflammation, and nausea. However, like any medication, ginger has its adverse effects, covering gastrointestinal and cardiovascular symptoms (Anh et al., 2020). The disadvantage of using traditional medicine is its unpredictable action time. When immediate help is required, herbs and other products are less effective than a specially created drug or injection.

There are many reasons for having multicultural approaches to medical treatment, including ethical recognition, respect, diversity, and improved understanding of health issues. It is not enough to diagnose a patient and choose a care plan. People want to feel support, and if one culture misses some perspectives, another culture improves the situation. Western and traditional cultural approaches may be improved by drawing upon the other. However, this combination diminishes the effects of traditions and the worth of technology in medical treatment. Instead of uniting options, it is better to enhance differences and underline the importance of each approach separately. The challenges of combining these approaches vary from differences in religious beliefs to financial problems. All these controversies between science and culture are necessary for medical treatment because they offer options for people and underline the uniqueness of populations and technological progress.

In general, science and traditions are two integral elements of human life. People strive to make their unique contributions to technology and invent the devices that facilitate human activities. At the same time, they never neglect respect for traditions and cultural diversity. Therefore, high-tech and traditional medicine approaches are commonly discussed and promoted today to identify more positive impacts and reduce negative associations and challenges.

December 24, 2017 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

We are all living in an era dominated by science. In simple terms science is a systematic study of physical world and universe on the basis of observation, experimentation and measurement.  The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw unparalleled scientific inventions and discoveries which changed the life of man on this planet.

Today we are dependent on science and technology that our life will come to a grinding halt in case of any malfunction in technology.

Science has brought many comforts and convenience in our lives. In earlier times man lived in harmony with nature. Despite many difficulties and hardships posed by nature we lived a less complex, simple, tension free life.

SCIENCE IN EVERY DAY LIFE

However with advancement in science and technology, the pace of life has increased to such a proportion that many individuals are unable to cope with it.

Table of Contents

Advantages of Science in Our Daily Life

Electricity.

The invention of electricity and electricity bulb by Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin    has completely transformed our life. Our homes are now equipped with electrical gadgets which cannot function without supply of electricity.

The water supply, washing machines, coolers, air conditioners, computers , television , fans etc. all need electricity. Many trains run with electricity.

Computers have completely revolutionized our life. The schools, offices, banks, aircraft’s, spacecraft’s and health services are based on computers.

With the computers, data is processed at a very speed which is beyond the capacity of human brain. The computer work with total accuracy.

The records can be processed, computed, stored and retrieved at a faster pace. Even the warfare in the armed forces is now driven by computers.

Health Service

In earlier days thousands of people used to die due to epidemics, diseases like plague, malaria etc. But the science has invented vaccines and antidotes to completely eradicate these diseases.

Today, complex heart and brain surgeries are carried out through nano technology. X-ray, MRI, CT scan etc. can give us three dimensional images about the internal organs of our body. Many organs can be transplanted with the help of technology.

Space Exploration

We have now conquered the outer space. Since the time when we landed on the moon, efforts are afoot to set up human colonies in outer space. Today’s warfare is fought through satellites put in the space.

Thousands of communication and imaging satellites can pin point any place on the earth. India has landed its craft on Mars. Many mysteries of the universe are now being unraveled. We may even be able to find out the origin of our world because of scientific exploration.

TV/Mobile/Radio

TV/Mobiles/Radio has made this world a global village. Space and distance have lost meaning. Sitting at our home we can be connected with anyone in any part of the world in seconds.

We can switch on any radio station through satellite and watch any programme on TV from any country round the clock. Any news or event happening can reach us live. Even some of the military operations/exercises from war zone can be seen sitting in our drawing room.

While we have progressed in every sphere of life due to science and technology, it has its darker side as well. Science has also brought with it nuclear bombs and weapons of mass destruction.

Building blocks for greener energy: Reconfigurable elastic metasurface

Energy harvesting, an eco-friendly technology, extends beyond solar and wind power in generating electricity from unused or discarded energy in daily life, including vibrations generated by passing car engines or trains. Recent intriguing research has been announced, aiming to enhance the efficiency of energy harvesting using a new type of metasurface that can be reconfigured, resembling the assembly of LEGO bricks.

Professor Junsuk Rho from the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering and PhD/MS student Geon Lee from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) have joined Professor Miso Kim from the School of Advanced Materials Science and Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) to collaborate on a research project. Together, they developed a multifunctional elastic metasurface that can be freely configured by attaching and detaching components for practical applications. This research was published in one of the international journals in materials science, Advanced Science .

Metamaterials are artificially designed structures that exploit the relationships among wavelengths to manipulate wave energy such as light, vibration, and sound. Harnessing this capability in energy harvesting allows for the gathering of elastic waves in piezoelectric components, thereby increasing the efficiency of electricity production. However, limitations in the theoretical analysis of the beams constituting metamaterials confine their operation to a single frequency and restrict their utility to specific purposes, posing challenges for their practical application in real structures.

The research team overcame these limitations by employing the Timoshenko-Ehrenfest beam theory instead of the conventional Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. What distinguishes the former is its consideration of the fundamental characteristics of elasticity, including shear deformation and rotational inertia effects of the beam. This study marks the first application of this theory to elastic metamaterial research.

The researchers succeeded in interpreting and modeling elastic metamaterials for phase modulation of elastic waves using the Timoshenko-Ehrenfest beam theory. Furthermore, they fabricated a new type of Timoshenko-Ehrenfest beam-based reconfigurable elastic metasurface (TREM) capable of attaching and detaching multiple structures. The TREM can reconstruct its surface depending on its application, enabling control over various wave phenomena such as anomalous wave refraction, wave focusing, self-accelerated wave propagation, and total wave reflection across a wide frequency range.

Notably, the team's TREM demonstrated outstanding effectiveness in harvesting elastic wave energy, enhancing the electrical output power of piezoelectric components by up to eight times. This highlights its value as a piezoelectric energy harvesting system.

Professor Junsuk Rho, the lead researcher, stated: "I believe that our newly developed metasurface, designed to operate across multifunctional and wide-frequency ranges, will prove invaluable in energy harvesting, most notably in the eco-friendly utilization of ambient energy. This technology, along with its applications in structural health monitoring, wireless sensing, and the Internet of Things, holds great potential for significant contributions across diverse fields."

Impact Project of POSCO Holdings, as well as by funding from various programs including the Pioneer Research Center Program, the Regional Leading Research Center (RLRC) Program, and the Laboratory for Future Technology Program, all administered by the National Research Foundation of Korea and funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Korean government.

How the SAT Changed My Life

An illustration of a man lying underneath a giant SAT prep book. The book makes a tent over him. He is smiling.

By Emi Nietfeld

Ms. Nietfeld is the author of the memoir “Acceptance.”

This month, the University of Texas, Austin, joined the wave of selective schools reversing Covid-era test-optional admissions policies, once again requiring applicants to submit ACT or SAT scores.

Many colleges have embraced the test-optional rule under the assumption that it bolsters equity and diversity, since higher scores are correlated with privilege. But it turns out that these policies harmed the teenagers they were supposed to help. Many low-income and minority applicants withheld scores that could have gotten them in, wrongly assuming that their scores were too low, according to an analysis by Dartmouth. More top universities are sure to join the reversal. This is a good thing.

I was one of the disadvantaged youths who are often failed by test-optional policies, striving to get into college while in foster care and homeless. We hear a lot about the efforts of these elite schools to attract diverse student bodies and about debates around the best way to assemble a class. What these conversations overlook is the hope these tests offer students who are in difficult situations.

For many of us, standardized tests provided our one shot to prove our potential, despite the obstacles in our lives or the untidy pasts we had. We found solace in the objectivity of a hard number and a process that — unlike many things in our lives — we could control. I will always feel tenderness toward the Scantron sheets that unlocked higher education and a better life.

Growing up, I fantasized about escaping the chaos of my family for the peace of a grassy quad. Both my parents had mental health issues. My adolescence was its own mess. Over two years I took a dozen psychiatric drugs while attending four different high school programs. At 14, I was sent to a locked facility where my education consisted of work sheets and reading aloud in an on-site classroom. In a life skills class, we learned how to get our G.E.D.s. My college dreams began to seem like delusions.

Then one afternoon a staff member handed me a library copy of “Barron’s Guide to the ACT .” I leafed through the onionskin pages and felt a thunderclap of possibility. I couldn’t go to the bathroom without permission, let alone take Advanced Placement Latin or play water polo or do something else that would impress elite colleges. But I could teach myself the years of math I’d missed while switching schools and improve my life in this one specific way.

After nine months in the institution, I entered foster care. I started my sophomore year at yet another high school, only to have my foster parents shuffle my course load at midyear, when they decided Advanced Placement classes were bad for me. In part because of academic instability like this, only 3 percent to 4 percent of former foster youth get a four-year college degree.

Later I bounced between friends’ sofas and the back seat of my rusty Corolla, using my new-to-me SAT prep book as a pillow. I had no idea when I’d next shower, but I could crack open practice problems and dip into a meditative trance. For those moments, everything was still, the terror of my daily life softened by the fantasy that my efforts might land me in a dorm room of my own, with endless hot water and an extra-long twin bed.

Standardized tests allowed me to look forward, even as every other part of college applications focused on the past. The song and dance of personal statements required me to demonstrate all the obstacles I’d overcome while I was still in the middle of them. When shilling my trauma left me gutted and raw, researching answer elimination strategies was a balm. I could focus on equations and readings, like the scholar I wanted to be, rather than the desperate teenager that I was.

Test-optional policies would have confounded me, but in the 2009-10 admissions cycle, I had to submit my scores; my fellow hopefuls and I were all in this together, slogging through multiple-choice questions until our backs ached and our eyes crossed.

The hope these exams instilled in me wasn’t abstract: It manifested in hundreds of glossy brochures. After I took the PSAT in my junior year, universities that had received my score flooded me with letters urging me to apply. For once, I felt wanted. These marketing materials informed me that the top universities offered generous financial aid that would allow me to attend free. I set my sights higher, despite my guidance counselor’s lack of faith.

When I took the actual SAT, I was ashamed of my score. Had submitting it been optional, I most likely wouldn’t have done it, because I suspected my score was lower than the prep-school applicants I was up against (exactly what Dartmouth found in the analysis that led it to reinstate testing requirements). When you grow up the way I did, it’s difficult to believe that you are ever good enough.

When I got into Harvard, it felt like a miracle splitting my life into a before and after. My exam preparation paid off on campus — it was the only reason I knew geometry or grammar — and it motivated me to tackle new, difficult topics. I majored in computer science, having never written a line of code. Though a career as a software engineer seemed far-fetched, I used my SAT study strategies to prepare for technical interviews (in which you’re given one or more problems to solve) that landed me the stable, lucrative Google job that catapulted me out of financial insecurity.

I’m not the only one who feels affection for these tests. At Harvard, I met other students who saw these exams as the one door they could unlock that opened into a new future. I was lucky that the tests offered me hope all along, that I could cling to the promise that one day I could bubble in a test form and find myself transported into a better life — the one I lead today.

Emi Nietfeld is the author of the memoir “ Acceptance .” Previously, she was a software engineer at Google and Facebook.

Do You Have Achy Joints? These Foods Or Drinks Could Be To Blame.

On Assignment For HuffPost

There are two ingredients in this sandwich that could contribute to joint pain.

There are about 350 joints in the human body , and if even a few are inflamed, it can really affect your life. Achy joints in your hands can make typing or writing difficult. Joint pain in the back, knees or feet can make any type of physical exercise painful ― even a short walk around the block.

For many people, the reason they have achy joints is due to arthritis , which is defined as joint inflammation. Dr. Grace Wright , a consultant rheumatologist in New York City and founder and president of the Association of Women in Rheumatology , told HuffPost that there are different types of arthritis, each with its own unique cause.

One common type is rheumatoid arthritis, which affects an estimated 1.3 million people in the U.S. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can cause joint pain. The earliest symptom is pain in the smaller joints, such as the fingers and toes. Over time, it progresses to affecting bigger joints, such as the ankles, knees, hips and shoulders.

“Recognizing early signs of arthritis is crucial for timely intervention and management. These signs may include persistent joint pain, stiffness, tenderness, swelling and reduced range of motion,” said Dr. Francisco Contreras , director of the Oasis of Hope Medical Institute in Tijuana, Mexico . Contreras noted that some of the first symptoms of arthritis can include fatigue, weakness, morning stiffness and joint noises (like grinding or cracking).

Multiple doctors told HuffPost that changing one’s diet doesn’t help alleviate symptoms in all forms of arthritis, but it may play a powerful role in decreasing symptoms for rheumatoid arthritis and gout arthritis , which is also caused by inflammation. In fact, there are five types of food in particular that the doctors recommend minimizing as a way to reduce pain:

1. Ultra-processed foods and drinks

“Research suggests that [ ultra-processed foods ] can exacerbate joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. These foods are typically high in refined carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, added sugars and artificial additives, all of which can trigger inflammation in the body,” Contreras told HuffPost.

To this point, research shows that a diet high in sugar can make rheumatoid arthritis symptoms worse because it prompts an inflammatory response in the body. For this reason, nixing soda, boxed pastries, candy and other ultra-processed foods from your diet may help reduce joint pain.

2. Cured or processed meat

According to Wright, cured or processed meat, such as bacon, sausage, hot dogs or ham, can make both rheumatoid arthritis and gout arthritis worse. This is because they’re high in nitrates, a compound found in meat preservatives that is linked to increasing arthritis pain . Wright explained that nitrates, similarly to sugar, can cause an inflammatory response in the body, which then leads to joint pain.

Wright added that joint pain doesn’t typically happen immediately after eating processed meat. Rather, a diet high in processed meat can result in joint pain years later. Because of this, cutting out processed meat may not alleviate symptoms immediately, but over time, it can make a difference.

Fried foods have an inflammatory affect on your joints.

3. Fried food

If you regularly nosh on french fries, fried chicken or onion rings, learning how to make them in the air fryer could help alleviate your joint pain. Wright explained that fried food can make arthritis symptoms worse because of the oils involved in the cooking process, which can trigger inflammation.

A diet high in trans fats (found in fried food, and widely considered to be the worst type of fat) can make symptoms of gout worse because of this pro-inflammatory effect.

4. Gluten (maybe)

It’s a common belief that cutting out gluten can help with joint pain. Is there any truth to it? Wright and Contreras both told HuffPost that cutting out gluten can help alleviate joint pain for people with celiac disease or people who are sensitive to gluten. But for individuals who aren’t sensitive to gluten, cutting it out likely won’t make a difference.

“Some people are sensitive to gluten even though they are not necessarily celiac,” Wright said. With this in mind, Wright’s advice is to try cutting out gluten for three months. If you don’t notice any difference, go ahead and add it back into your diet. But anecdotally, she said it does help alleviate symptoms for many people with arthritis.

Dr. Sonya Mehta , a rheumatologist at Intermountain Health in Las Vegas, told HuffPost that alcohol can worsen arthritis caused by inflammation for several reasons. First, the breakdown of alcohol creates inflammatory compounds. In other words, it causes an inflammatory response, which can then trigger symptoms.

Mehta explained that alcohol can also reduce the production of anti-inflammatory bacteria in the gut while increasing production of pro-inflammatory bacteria. An imbalance of gut bacteria can trigger rheumatoid arthritis . She noted that alcohol can weaken the immune system , making the body more susceptible to toxins, which can cause an inflammatory response (such as joint pain).

According to Contreras, yet another reason alcohol can make arthritis symptoms worse is because it can induce dehydration, decreasing the production of synovial fluid, which cushions the joints.

What To Eat Instead

All three doctors say that the best diet for people with inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout) is an anti-inflammatory diet.

“This [way of eating] includes foods we generally know are good for us anyway, including leafy green vegetables, nuts, fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines which contain omega-3 fatty acids and are anti-inflammatory, and fruits, particularly berries and oranges, which are high in antioxidants,” Mehta said.

Both Mehta and Wright cited the Mediterranean diet a s another eating plan that naturally includes foods that are anti-inflammatory and therefore good for people with achy joints.

“The Mediterranean diet prioritizes whole grains, vegetables, fish and other unprocessed foods while minimizing meat and processed foods. This way of eating seems to work universally for people with joint pain,” Wright said. Research does support the connection between the Mediterranean diet and improved rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Mehta emphasized that eating a diet high in anti-inflammatory foods isn’t just good for managing joint pain; it’s beneficial for overall health and preventing other chronic diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and certain types of cancer.

“An anti-inflammatory diet is a good idea for anyone to follow, not just patients with inflammatory arthritis,” she said. That means if you take the majority of your meals with others, eating this way will benefit everyone around the table, not just you.

If you have any questions about managing your joint pain, talk to your health care provider. Treating your pain may take more than diet changes alone. But revamping your diet is a great place to start. Your entire body will be better for it.
