The spring dance is in two weeks, and my friend needs help choosing a dress. She beckons me to her phone where an endless mosaic of elegant dresses, not one over $20, dances before my eyes. After much deliberation, she settles on a glamorous sapphire gown with pleated details lining the bodice. Another two weeks later, the dress carpets the bottom of a landfill, worn only once.

Welcome to the world of fast fashion.

Fast fashion is a relatively recent phenomenon. During the 1990s, retailers began to introduce trendy, cheaply-priced, poorly-made clothes on a weekly basis, intending to match the breakneck pace at which fashion trends move. Style became cheap, convenient and consumable.

Fast fashion, however, is ultimately a privilege. It is a privilege to buy clothes solely for their style, and it is a privilege to ignore the environmental consequences of doing so. In reality, the aggressive cycle of consumption perpetuated by fast fashion means that the clothes we wear are now more likely than ever to end up as part of the 92 million tons of textile waste produced annually.

During the pandemic, as stores closed, consumers ditched fast fashion staples such as H&M and Zara, instead opting to order from e-commerce social media sensations such as Shein and Asos. (Shein is now valued at $100 billion, more than H&M and Zara combined.) These brands represent an escalation of both fast fashion and its environmental toll.

These fast fashion newcomers thrived during the pandemic because of their unique business models. They exist entirely online, allowing them to ship the thousands of new styles they release daily to consumers directly from their warehouses, avoiding supply chain snags and U.S. import duties in the process. Meanwhile, a reliance on cheap overseas labor and synthetic textiles keeps prices irresistibly low.

These practices, however, are hurting the Earth more than ever before. Because these retailers rely solely on international shipping to move their products, they only exacerbate the annual billion tons of greenhouse gasses released by shipping. Virtually all of these brands sell clothes that contain petroleum-based, resource-intensive synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon. During their lifetime, these fibers are responsible for 35 percent of the microplastics contaminating our oceans and can subsequently take centuries to decompose in landfills.

Though fast fashion represents an understandably alluring combination of style and savings, now, more than ever, we simply cannot quantify the true cost of our clothing with a price tag. When consumers want to update their wardrobe, they can do so sustainably by thrifting, reworking old garments or researching environmentally-conscious brands.

For now, I’ll be at my next school dance rocking the same dress I did last year.

Deadly Fashion

My $9.99 t-shirt is no longer wearable after two washes: the shape of the shirt is so distorted that it does not fit me well anymore. One might say I got what I paid for, because the poorly constructed t-shirt is from a “fast fashion” store. Fast fashion is a term for the companies like H&M, Zara, and Uniqlo that sell clothes that copy the trendy appeal of high-end brands but at an affordable price, usually because they are made in countries with low labor costs like India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and China. Fast fashion prices are so low, explains anthropologist and marketing professor Annamma Joy, that consumers feel encouraged to dispose of a garment after a few wearings and buy a new piece (274). This leads to an increase in sales for new clothing. In fact, According to journalist Rachel Monroe, “Worldwide, clothing production doubled from 2000 to 2015, while prices dropped: We were spending the same amount on clothes, but getting nearly twice as many items for it.” This increase in value for customers has a steep price, even if we can't see it in the store. Before tossing my t-shirt in a donation bag, I wonder about the person who sewed it. Who is this person? How good or bad are their working conditions? What about the cost of pollution? Although some defend the fast fashion industry’s aesthetic and economic contributions, it has devastating impacts on labor rights and the environment, and needs serious regulations by all nations to stop the damage.

One glaring consequence of the demand for cheap clothing is that factory workers get paid too little, while their requests for living wages are ignored. Cheap labor is a reason that many apparel corporations move their production overseas. As Adam Matthews reports, by 2016, only 3% of clothes sold in the U.S. were made in this country. This shift to foreign production is the direct result of lower labor costs. According to Deborah Drew, an associate at the World Resource Institute’s Center for Sustainable Business, women garment workers in Bangladesh are paid about $96 per month; however, the government estimates $336 dollars as a minimum level for workers to afford their basic needs. Based on these statistics, women are paid less than a third of a necessary living wage. Garment workers in other developing countries suffer similarly: they work long hours but remain in poverty. Business owners and their powerful organizations dismiss the demands of factory laborers for raises because they claim that paying more will lead to factory closures. In fact, in recent negotiations, some are trying to impose even worse pay. Ken Loo, secretary-general of the Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia, defended the employers’ proposal to reduce wages by 4.5 percent. He “pointed to the economic effects of COVID-19 and said garment industry employers can’t afford to spend more on labor” (Sovuthy). His statement reflects the belief that the workers’ lives and well-being are not important compared to the continuing profits of the owners and investors. Most reasonable people would not agree with that idea, but most of us still shop for cheap clothing. We can’t depend on the individual fairness of factory owners, or on individual consumers to solve this problem; that’s why regulations are critical.

Besides low wages, workers in the clothing factories also suffer terrible working conditions. Singular tragic events such as the Rana Plaza factory collapse in 2013 that killed over a thousand workers make worldwide news (Rahman and Rahman 1331), but the daily experiences of the people making cheap clothing are also unacceptable. According to Sadika Akhter, an anthropologist and doctor of Environmental Public Health and her colleagues, garment workers in Bangladesh typically work ten to twelve hours per day, inhaling fabric dust, enduring extreme heat, and getting repetitive motion injuries from using the machines. They are constantly in pain and exhausted. In their qualitative study of women garment workers’ experiences, Akhter et al. quote a machine operator who says, “We sew shirts with our tears and injure our fingers due to needle punctures. If you work at the garment factory it will give you some money but it will take your health. . . . No one can work in a factory more than ten years because you will lose your physical strength, energy and health . . . due to the nature of hard work in this industry." This statement emphasizes how exploited these workers are; their bodies are being damaged every day. The people, not just the clothing, are treated as if they are disposable.

It is true that the industry has made some progress in improving labor rights. Sociology professor Shahidur Rahman of BRAC University, and professor of Development Studies Kazi Mahmudur of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh describe some attempts at reform following the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013 in their article in Development and Change . According to Rahman and Rahman, two major agreements, the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and the Alliance for Bangladesh Workers' Safety brought together business owners and governments to improve the safety of factory buildings (1332). The Bangladeshi government also made changes to labor laws to allow workers to organize, and other international unions and non-governmental organizations have campaigned for worker rights in the industry (Rahman and Rahman 1333). These developments are positive—at least workers are less likely to die in a fire or building collapse. However, the inhumane daily conditions and low pay remain, even eight years after these agreements were made.

Beyond the conditions inside the factories, the production of cheap clothing causes significant pollution. The problems begin with the raw materials: synthetic fibers are made from petroleum, and although plant fibers are considered more natural, growing plants to use for fabric has its own problems. Research scientist Luz Claudio writes that cotton is "one of the most water and pesticide dependent crops (A450). Despite the fact that more consumers are choosing organic produce over conventional because of the concern about pesticide residue on fruits and vegetables, this trend is not extending to crops grown for fabrics. In fact, pesticide use on cotton fields is actually growing, along with its negative impact on farm workers, according to an international team of scientists from Pakistan and Greece (Khan and Damala 9). This problem is not limited to the countries where clothing is sewn; the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that the usage of pesticides to produce cotton is a quarter of the entire pesticide used in this country (qtd. in Claudio, A450). Furthermore, when fabric is processed and dyed in factories overseas it can lead to significant water pollution. According to investigative reporter Adam Matthews, water that runs off from the factories contaminates rivers that are the lifeline for farmers, killing crops and sickening local residents and animals. Yixiu Wu of Greenpeace points out that "the average pair of jeans requires 1,850 gallons of water to process; a t-shirt requires 715 gallons. And after going through the manufacturing process, all that water often ends up horribly polluted" (qtd. in Matthews). In addition to water pollution, the fashion industry produces at least a tenth of the world's carbon emissions, says journalist Dana Thomas (qtd. in Shatzman). Still, most retail corporations do little to address these harms, because their profits are higher when they spend less money ensuring that crops are grown without poisons and that the waste products are properly disposed of.

Despite the clear injustices and environmental harms of garment production, some argue that the fashion industry provides work to people with few better choices in developing countries. According to reporter Stephanie Vatz, companies began outsourcing clothing manufacturing jobs in the 1970s, and by 2013, only two percent of clothing was made in the U.S. The same lack of labor protections that allow terrible working conditions in developing countries also guarantees low labor costs that motivate U.S. companies to relocate their factory sources (Vatz). Some claim that this is actually a benefit to those workers. For example, Benjamin Powell, the director of the Free Market Institute, justifies sweatshop labor, insists that this model is "part of the process that raises living standards and leads to better working conditions and development over time (qtd. in Ozdamar-Ertekin 3). This argument is compelling from a distance, but even if it may be true to some degree when we look at the history of economic development, it disregards the humanity of current garment workers. These people continue to work long hours in brutal conditions, generating huge profits for the factory and retail owners. Making the excuse that their lives could be even worse without this exploitation is just a cynical justification for greed.

Fast fashion brands focus almost entirely on financial gain and ignore social responsibility and workers' human rights. They turn a blind eye to polluting rivers, the impact on farmland, and poor labor conditions. As a consumer of fast fashion brands, this is troubling. As a person considering fashion as a part of history, a form of art and self-expression, this is beyond sad. A bad sewing job is an inconvenience for me, but unethical practices are the real issue. If there is something we can change, that is our behavior as consumers: we need to buy second-hand clothes, look for companies making apparel here in the U.S., and be willing to pay more for higher-quality clothing that lasts. However, ultimately this is not just a question of our own purchasing decisions. Major changes are needed in the system, and for that we need stronger government regulations to ensure real change.

Essay: Why Fashion is Important

The Fashionisto

Published October 18, 2017

Louis Vuitton 2016 Spring Summer Backstage

Fashion is one of the most critical industries in our world today. Style has become one of the primary ways in which people express their personality and distinguish themselves from those around them. With every New Year which comes and goes, new fashions arrive on the scene, and they all endeavor to be more colorful and fashionable than those which saw last year. There’s inspiration everywhere, from online retailers like Roden Gray to printed magazines. The desire to express one was present throughout human history.

People of all ages are addicted to new trends in fashion. There is a tremendous amount of competition within the industry and also among consumers. The style is also different among different cultures and nationalities, which is why it’s so exciting when one travels to various parts of the planet to observe firsthand how people dress in those countries. Our clothes have become more than merely a way to cover our nakedness. Instead, it has also become one of the primary ways in which people express themselves.

Garments which may fit one person may not necessarily be equally suitable for someone else. And even if those clothes are fantastic designer efforts, it does not mean everyone would be equally comfortable wearing them. Different people will need different styles and designs, which will be an expression of their uniqueness and personality before they will not be comfortable wearing that specific fashion design. Human beings are complicated creatures; everyone has different desires, dreams, and objectives that they deem essential to success in their life. Fashion trends are a critical aspect of that success.

There is a lot of discrimination among human beings and also a lot of criticism. People will do everything possible to avoid such criticism. Peer pressure continues to affect people throughout their lives, and it is a powerful motivator when it comes to crucial fashion decisions. It is also true that fashion design has reached a very sophisticated level, and therefore some of the most popular models can be very costly.

It has the result that such fashion may only be accessible to affluent people. It can make it very difficult for people of average income to compete in fashion designs. Fortunately, there has been a lot of progress by fashion designers to cater to middle-income consumers. It is why there are a lot of fashion designs available, which can make it possible for less fortunate people to own still fashion designs that will be of very high quality and attractive.

There are fashion items for every season and every occasion, making it possible for people to express themselves differently depending on the specific season or time of the year. Looking at all the consumer needs that have emerged in modern times, it becomes easy to see why fashion design has become such a specialized industry.

Another aspect that deserves contemplation is the fact that there is a measure of similarity in those fashion trends which aim at the low-income person. It is going a long way in avoiding discrimination or unnecessary competition because there is a lot of similarity in the designs which aim at this consumer market. Therefore, less affluent people can avoid unwarranted discrimination and criticism because, they are dressed very similarly in many ways to their friends, colleagues, or family members.

Care should be taken to avoid fashion designs of poor quality, especially in cases where failed fashion experiments are nevertheless mass-produced and then dumped on the low-income consumer. On the other hand, some poor people cannot afford anything better, leaving her with no choice but to purchase low-quality products.

Nevertheless, an eye for detail can be a blessing because this can help a person who may only have access to low-quality fashion items to mix and match those things very efficiently so that the overall result is nonetheless beautiful. There is some truth to the statement that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it, which is the most critical issue.

Unfortunately, many people never seem to learn how to combine different fashion items correctly and adequately. Knowing which colors go together is a rare gift that some people never master. Therefore, even affluent people with access to very costly fashion items often fail to do those things justice because of a lack of understanding regarding color matching.

Many people seem to think tight clothing is more attractive than a loose-fitting dress, and then they make fools of themselves by wearing unnecessarily close-fitting clothes. It is why it is essential to have at least a basic understanding of choosing your fashion items and mixing and matching those things for the best results. Access to the most expensive fashion trends on the market is undoubtedly a benefit. Still, it’s even more important to have a basic sense of how to maximize how the wearer will display those clothes and other articles.

Clothes are also known to impact people’s moods substantially; likewise, some colors are more effective than others in putting people in a better place as far as their mindset and emotions are concerned. Every person should do at least an introductory modeling course to understand how to make the best of their free clothes and accessories. Like we said earlier, it is not so much what you are wearing but rather how you are wearing it, which will ultimately provide proof of your competence as far as fashion and personal appearance is concerned.

fashion argumentative essay

Do you know how to write an essay? Do you know how to compose an argumentative essay? Knowing the latest fashion trends is not the only think you need to become a successful fashion writer. Your career of a fashion writer can start already while you are at College. The first step is mastering the difference between an argumentative essay and all other writing assignments you get at college? Understanding your assignment is the first and the most important factor for doing it right. The same way is with the argumentative essay. To write it well, you have to understand what you are asked to write, and how you’re going to do it. You can either apply to an official site of a professional writing service to assist you, or you can do it by yourself using our recommendations provided below. The choice is up to you.

Before the dawn of internet, a career of a fashion journalist meant living in a big fashion capital, in addition to attending all of the industry events, from fashion weeks to press days. End of the day you would see your thoughts taking the pages of printed fashion magazines, sometimes four to six months after you write them. Today fashion writers need to deliver their reviews hours if not minutes after seeing the collection, but just as on any contemporary workplace have to master a massive list of tasks and writing assignments.

DESIGN SCENE team compiles a list of of principal writing tips, to help you improve your writing – beyond your knowledge of fashion.

How to Structure and Compose an Argumentative Fashion Essay

First of all, let’s find out what an argumentative essay is. An argumentative essay is a type of writing in which you convince the readers of your point of view on a specific topic. The easiest way to compose an argumentative essay for a student is to use already a settled structure. With an essay, it is a 5-paragraph structure, the simplest and fastest way, which can be applied to other types of essay writing later.

Literally, this structure consists of the following parts: ? Introduction; ? Paragraph one «for»; ? Paragraph two «for»; ? Paragraph three «against»; ? Conclusion.

Argumentative Essay or Fashion Review: Step-by-Step Guide

The first part of your writing process is all about analysing the topic and planning your further steps. For an argumentative essay, planning is essential as it gives a clear vision of how you’re going to move on with your arguments. Thus, the structure will be more understandable and logical for a reader as well. A teacher pays attention not only to what you write but also to the way you write it. So, take time and consider how you’re going to compose your essay if you don’t want to lose additional points for structure.

Analysing the essay topic is about highlighting what exactly is required to write about. Thus if reviewing a collection by a fashion designer, make sure to take a moment and get familiar with designer’s previous work. If a topic is short, you won’t have any problems. But if a topic consists of several sentences, you will need to highlight the keywords and base your understanding of the topic on them. Understanding the question of the topic helps you to answer effectively and to write faster. If you’re not sure you’ve completely understood the task, consult a teacher. Never start the writing process, hoping that you will figure out what you’re asked in the middle of it. With fashion – do not forget your readers are also looking for an advice between the lines, more than just hearing what you thought about a designer’s work.

fashion argumentative essay

The same is with the number of the words your essay should contain. A teacher doesn’t want to see a 300-word essay if you’re asked to compose a 500-word one and vice versa. Stick to the requirements you got. However, in today’s industry whether you work with fashion or news site – you’ll be required to write even shorter but eye-catching articles.

An argumentative essay is about proving an objective opinion. So, you have to provide both sides of an argument, even if you’re completely sure about your own opinion on this topic. Provide two paragraphs supporting the opinion, and one paragraph against that opinion. There are many ways to plan your essay – diagrams, tables, charts, etc. What we recommend is using a spider diagram as it allows to add as many points to your plan as you need during the whole writing process, without spending too much time on it. It is the quickest way of organizing your thoughts and ideas, and the clearest one for a student. Start with your own opinion, slightly adding different thoughts about the topic and points, which you definitely want to cover in the essay. With an argumentative essay, you should always ask « Why? » or « Why not? » whenever you have a new opinion or thought about the topic.

fashion argumentative essay

Note as many ideas as you can while reviewing the work of your interview subject or a designer whose work you are reviewing. It doesn’t matter if you consider something too simple or too silly to mention in an essay. It is important to write down even the most obvious ideas about the topic to see the whole picture. Then, you’re going to filter everything you’ve written, choosing only the strongest points. This will be the core of the whole essay. Great way to master fashion writing is keeping up with some the greats in the business, such as fashion writers Tim Blanks and Suzy Menkes to name a few.

Before writing a paragraph, compose a topic sentence, which summarizes everything you’re going to talk about in the next paragraph. It has to be a short and clear sentence or a couple of sentences. Such sentences help you as well as a reader to understand what is going to be in the next paragraph. But don’t include here any specific information. Express just a general point of view. So, that’s all for one of the most effective ways of writing an argumentative essay at college or uni. Use our recommendations for your next writing assignment and it will be the easiest writing experience you have had.

Essay about Clothes and Personality

Introduction.

Does fashion make personality? The way you dress says a lot about the kind of individual you are. The fashion you decide to go with should reveal your desires, interests, ambition, and background. Everyone is unique in terms of personality and interest, and therefore, it is important for a person to wear what emphasizes who they are. There are people who are wild and like to explore, while others prefer styles that add nostalgia and romance (Bell 45).

As clothes define a person, this essay addresses how crucial it is to know who you are so that you can choose a style that fits your personality. In addition, be sure to be consistent with your style to create a signature that describes you as an individual. The fashion we choose to go with should match our personality because people can easily judge us from our dress code (Bell 47). In this essay about clothes and personality, I will discuss how fashion makes an individual’s character.

While most individuals find it easy to conform to other people’s fashion, it is extremely important for people to identify what suits them best and incorporate that in their own style to distinguish their personality. In fashion, being different is an important aspect because it helps individual personality to stand out.

In the movie the “Devil wears Prada”, which is created around fashion, we can easily identify roles of the characters by observing their dress codes. While Anna is dressed in simple clothes that do not have a voice in fashion, Miranda is dressed in timeless fashion that gives her the rich woman’s look ( The devil wears prada ). On the other hand, Andrea was given an over the edge fashion that showed the outgoing and careless look in the movie ( The devil wear prada ).

In addition to this, it is not difficult to notice that Field had a good idea about fashion and personality based on the outfits and make up for her characters. The looks and fashion in this movie was able to give the characters stage personalities that were outstanding from the other. This is a clear indication that what we put on talks much about who we are.

Although, it takes time to develop one’s style and fashion it is important for individuals to be in a position to say who they are through their dressing. Having individual dress code helps in boosting self-confidence and brings comfort (Bell 113). Your image is highly dependent on how you dress on a regular basis because people learn to associate you with the kind of fashion you embrace.

When it comes to fashion and personality, make sure that when people see a certain fashion they can actually identify that look with your personality. Learn to leave a mark in what is in your wardrobe to ensure that your clothes speak loud about the kind of a person you are; let your clothes define you more than words can do.

People who are dramatic and casual like to make strong fashion statements also tend to be stunning and attention seeking (Musselman and DeGregori 47). For this kind of personality, choose bold colors, straight lines, and unique outstanding jewelry to match your outfits (Musselman and DeGregori 47). A dramatic personality seeks attention at all times and wants to make a strong statement (Bell 121).

A dramatic personality goes well with clothes that are fashionable and overshadow other people. Their class of fashion is able to help people notice their personality even for those meeting them for the first time. However, if someone with a dramatic personality decided to dress like a classic personality he or she would look out of place. Therefore, it is advisable to have fashion that clearly highlights who you are from far.

For those people with a serious personality, and mostly like having a classic look, they should have clothes with straight lines, neutral colors such as gray, white and black, flat shoes, and striped tops (Musselman and DeGregori 56). This is what makes them stand out as no nonsense people and enables them to get people’s attention at first glance. In addition, this kind of fashion portrays people with very strong personality, focused and in control (Bell 78).

However, when blending fashion with personality it is wise to choose clothes that match your body shape. Clothes should highlight on your strong points and conceal physical faults (Musselman and DeGregori 94). Women with a classic personality are conservative and prefer simple fashion that is well balanced. In addition, they like simple accessories that stand the test of time such as plain gold chain. This type of fashion screams that “am intelligent, simple, and focused” (Bell 113).

On the other hand, there is ingénue and romantic personality that always appears young and girlish with a small body (Musselman and DeGregori 73). Young girls always look cute and charming because of their small physique. In addition, they have a love for things that are nice and more feminine such as fragile jewelry, ruffles, lace, and soft fabrics (Musselman and DeGregori 77).

Because of their personality, such people are likely to be taken less serious and considered childish by most people. This is the weakness associated with this personality but people can be able to combine their dressing with other aspects to make their personality clearly represented without misjudgment. However, this personality enables women to be more feminine and attractive compared to other personalities hence if it is combined with other types of fashion it creates a balanced style.

The way we dress says so much about our personality especially in instances where we have to make a first impression. Our fashion speaks volumes about the kind of people we are in terms of interests, ambitions, and aspirations. A person in jeans and t-shirt appears to be relaxed while, one in a suit creates the impression of focus, alert and serious.

On the other hand, a person in an inadequate dress creates the impression that she is wild, free spirited and easy to hang around. People can draw assumptions about us or our social preference from the way we dress. Therefore, it is important for people to make independent choices for fashion to ensure that we create the right impression about ourselves. While it may not be possible for one to pick a single style or fashion, it is wise to incorporate some aspects of other fashions to emphasize on their personality.

For instance, if you are dramatic and realize that people brush you off you can add some elements of classic in your style to achieve the desired results. Some classic fashion elements will let people respect and take you a serious individual. However, if you are a classic and people are not able to see your fun and charming side, adding some element of dramatic personality in your fashion is more appropriate.

When do you write an argumentative essay, approaches to argumentative essays, introducing your argument, the body: developing your argument, concluding your argument, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about argumentative essays.

You might be assigned an argumentative essay as a writing exercise in high school or in a composition class. The prompt will often ask you to argue for one of two positions, and may include terms like “argue” or “argument.” It will frequently take the form of a question.

The prompt may also be more open-ended in terms of the possible arguments you could make.

Argumentative writing at college level

At university, the vast majority of essays or papers you write will involve some form of argumentation. For example, both rhetorical analysis and literary analysis essays involve making arguments about texts.

In this context, you won’t necessarily be told to write an argumentative essay—but making an evidence-based argument is an essential goal of most academic writing, and this should be your default approach unless you’re told otherwise.

Examples of argumentative essay prompts

At a university level, all the prompts below imply an argumentative essay as the appropriate response.

Your research should lead you to develop a specific position on the topic. The essay then argues for that position and aims to convince the reader by presenting your evidence, evaluation and analysis.

  • Don’t just list all the effects you can think of.
  • Do develop a focused argument about the overall effect and why it matters, backed up by evidence from sources.
  • Don’t just provide a selection of data on the measures’ effectiveness.
  • Do build up your own argument about which kinds of measures have been most or least effective, and why.
  • Don’t just analyze a random selection of doppelgĂ€nger characters.
  • Do form an argument about specific texts, comparing and contrasting how they express their thematic concerns through doppelgĂ€nger characters.

An argumentative essay should be objective in its approach; your arguments should rely on logic and evidence, not on exaggeration or appeals to emotion.

There are many possible approaches to argumentative essays, but there are two common models that can help you start outlining your arguments: The Toulmin model and the Rogerian model.

Toulmin arguments

The Toulmin model consists of four steps, which may be repeated as many times as necessary for the argument:

  • Make a claim
  • Provide the grounds (evidence) for the claim
  • Explain the warrant (how the grounds support the claim)
  • Discuss possible rebuttals to the claim, identifying the limits of the argument and showing that you have considered alternative perspectives

The Toulmin model is a common approach in academic essays. You don’t have to use these specific terms (grounds, warrants, rebuttals), but establishing a clear connection between your claims and the evidence supporting them is crucial in an argumentative essay.

Say you’re making an argument about the effectiveness of workplace anti-discrimination measures. You might:

  • Claim that unconscious bias training does not have the desired results, and resources would be better spent on other approaches
  • Cite data to support your claim
  • Explain how the data indicates that the method is ineffective
  • Anticipate objections to your claim based on other data, indicating whether these objections are valid, and if not, why not.

Rogerian arguments

The Rogerian model also consists of four steps you might repeat throughout your essay:

  • Discuss what the opposing position gets right and why people might hold this position
  • Highlight the problems with this position
  • Present your own position , showing how it addresses these problems
  • Suggest a possible compromise —what elements of your position would proponents of the opposing position benefit from adopting?

This model builds up a clear picture of both sides of an argument and seeks a compromise. It is particularly useful when people tend to disagree strongly on the issue discussed, allowing you to approach opposing arguments in good faith.

Say you want to argue that the internet has had a positive impact on education. You might:

  • Acknowledge that students rely too much on websites like Wikipedia
  • Argue that teachers view Wikipedia as more unreliable than it really is
  • Suggest that Wikipedia’s system of citations can actually teach students about referencing
  • Suggest critical engagement with Wikipedia as a possible assignment for teachers who are skeptical of its usefulness.

You don’t necessarily have to pick one of these models—you may even use elements of both in different parts of your essay—but it’s worth considering them if you struggle to structure your arguments.

Regardless of which approach you take, your essay should always be structured using an introduction , a body , and a conclusion .

Like other academic essays, an argumentative essay begins with an introduction . The introduction serves to capture the reader’s interest, provide background information, present your thesis statement , and (in longer essays) to summarize the structure of the body.

Hover over different parts of the example below to see how a typical introduction works.

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts is on the rise, and its role in learning is hotly debated. For many teachers who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its critical benefits for students and educators—as a uniquely comprehensive and accessible information source; a means of exposure to and engagement with different perspectives; and a highly flexible learning environment.

The body of an argumentative essay is where you develop your arguments in detail. Here you’ll present evidence, analysis, and reasoning to convince the reader that your thesis statement is true.

In the standard five-paragraph format for short essays, the body takes up three of your five paragraphs. In longer essays, it will be more paragraphs, and might be divided into sections with headings.

Each paragraph covers its own topic, introduced with a topic sentence . Each of these topics must contribute to your overall argument; don’t include irrelevant information.

This example paragraph takes a Rogerian approach: It first acknowledges the merits of the opposing position and then highlights problems with that position.

Hover over different parts of the example to see how a body paragraph is constructed.

A common frustration for teachers is students’ use of Wikipedia as a source in their writing. Its prevalence among students is not exaggerated; a survey found that the vast majority of the students surveyed used Wikipedia (Head & Eisenberg, 2010). An article in The Guardian stresses a common objection to its use: “a reliance on Wikipedia can discourage students from engaging with genuine academic writing” (Coomer, 2013). Teachers are clearly not mistaken in viewing Wikipedia usage as ubiquitous among their students; but the claim that it discourages engagement with academic sources requires further investigation. This point is treated as self-evident by many teachers, but Wikipedia itself explicitly encourages students to look into other sources. Its articles often provide references to academic publications and include warning notes where citations are missing; the site’s own guidelines for research make clear that it should be used as a starting point, emphasizing that users should always “read the references and check whether they really do support what the article says” (“Wikipedia:Researching with Wikipedia,” 2020). Indeed, for many students, Wikipedia is their first encounter with the concepts of citation and referencing. The use of Wikipedia therefore has a positive side that merits deeper consideration than it often receives.

An argumentative essay ends with a conclusion that summarizes and reflects on the arguments made in the body.

No new arguments or evidence appear here, but in longer essays you may discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your argument and suggest topics for future research. In all conclusions, you should stress the relevance and importance of your argument.

Hover over the following example to see the typical elements of a conclusion.

The internet has had a major positive impact on the world of education; occasional pitfalls aside, its value is evident in numerous applications. The future of teaching lies in the possibilities the internet opens up for communication, research, and interactivity. As the popularity of distance learning shows, students value the flexibility and accessibility offered by digital education, and educators should fully embrace these advantages. The internet’s dangers, real and imaginary, have been documented exhaustively by skeptics, but the internet is here to stay; it is time to focus seriously on its potential for good.

An argumentative essay tends to be a longer essay involving independent research, and aims to make an original argument about a topic. Its thesis statement makes a contentious claim that must be supported in an objective, evidence-based way.

An expository essay also aims to be objective, but it doesn’t have to make an original argument. Rather, it aims to explain something (e.g., a process or idea) in a clear, concise way. Expository essays are often shorter assignments and rely less on research.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

The majority of the essays written at university are some sort of argumentative essay . Unless otherwise specified, you can assume that the goal of any essay you’re asked to write is argumentative: To convince the reader of your position using evidence and reasoning.

In composition classes you might be given assignments that specifically test your ability to write an argumentative essay. Look out for prompts including instructions like “argue,” “assess,” or “discuss” to see if this is the goal.

About Fast Fashion

Fast fashion is a term used to describe an approach to the design, creation, and marketing of clothing fashions that emphasizes making fashion trends quickly and cheaply available to consumers. The collections are often based on styles presented at Fashion Week runway shows or worn by celebrities. Fast fashion allows mainstream consumers to purchase the hot new look or the next big thing at an affordable price.

Before the Industrial Revolution and the invention of the sewing machine, fashion was slow. People made their own clothes and cared to repair them when necessary. Clothes were often tailored to the individual and designed to last a lifetime. Then, people slowly moved towards wearing clothes for style and not because of practical features like durability. The concept of ‘fast fashion’ began with the mass production of cheap quality clothing, with the term officially being coined in the 1990s by the New York Times, with Zara’s new accelerated production model being their inspiration – where clothes were taken rapidly from the design stage, inspired by Fashion Week, to the stores for anyone to buy.

Major players in the fast-fashion market include Zara, H&M Group, UNIQLO, GAP, Forever 21, Topshop, Esprit, Primark, Fashion Nova, and New Look. Many companies are both retailers and manufacturers, though they often outsource the actual production of clothing.

Fast fashion follows the concept of category management, linking the manufacturer with the consumer in a mutually beneficial relationship.
