Why Reality Shows are So Popular?

Introduction, popularity of reality shows, works cited.

A reality show is a section of television programs, which comprise of situations of humor or drama. Usually, the host is an ordinary individual interviewing ordinary people who are presented with a present afterwards. Reality shows have almost become part of the popular culture due to its humorous nature.

Realty television shows present a form of reality. Events in the reality shows are overhyped to attract viewership and increase the income accrued for advertisement. Those who act in reality shows are assigned in extraordinary situations in order to portray events in reality.

The popularity of reality shows is depended on several factors as viewed and explained by different authors. Reality shows have become popular because of the lessons they give to the viewers. Dreyer noted that reality shows are quite significant because they are a tool of political lessons (p.410).

He tries to explain the exploration of concepts of alliance behavior, and strategic voting by reality television programs. He further explains that reality shows create interest of politics in the viewers. This is because they show the relevance of politics hence the viewers are left with a desire to investigate on the same phenomena. It is also explained that if reality shows are viewed from a facial perspective, they become educative (Dreyer, p.410).

According to Hewitt, the popularity of reality shows has been increased because their content is mostly liked by youth and young children (para. 6). Their interest has been caught by things that are advertised related to sex. He says that realty shows have been found to erode the value of culture in the society because most of them deal with violence and sex (Hewitt, para. 2).

Furthermore, most reality shows have to be replaced with shows that build the moral character of children and promote core values in the society. It can be observed that the reality shows have become popular because of the revenue accrued by those who participate. This has been influenced by some governments allowing the television stations to make advertisements which have led to a greater expansion of the industry.

Also, the reality television programs have been popular because of some authorities trying to filter out political overtones, which cannot be viewed through news programs. This is because the news program cannot attract viewers hence giving way for reality shows to fill the gap.

Again, the popularity of the reality shows has been increased due to their cheap price (Hewitt, para. 4). It has been noted that reality shows are gaining popularity because they are cheaply available. Also, making reality show is not a sophisticated venture (Johnson, para. 6).

He further says that reality shows are a major source of new businesses, innovations, and jobs. Also, it has been observed that the popularity of reality shows has been increased because they reveal secrets of people who perform threatening acts in the world. Finally, it has been observed that reality shows educate, entertain, and inform people (Johnson, p.14).

Although reality shows are sometimes viewed as mindless entertainments, they are educative and innovative. This is because most of the things that young men and women put into practice are derived from the television shows.

Nonetheless, some of these shows are non-educative or destructive such that they can erode moral values in the society. In such cases, they should be censored. This is because such shows affect the cultural values of the society. The government should control some of the reality show programs that may divert youngsters from the culture. Therefore, reality shows should be encouraged depending on the program being presented and the target viewers.

Write an intricate, confessional, or embarrassing essay

Introduction

Today, there is an obsession with reality and this is reflected in the great number of TV shows and series such as Survivor, The Apprentice, Hell’s Kitchen, Shark Yank etc. The success of these “reality” shows goes to show that life is made up of different components and is not a neat narrative as previously implied in conventional novels and fiction stories. This is captured by the statement: "As a work gets more autobiographical, more intricate, more confessional, more embarrassing, it breaks into fragments" (Shield 308). This statement is true because people are bored with the ordered fiction stories and TV shows, which do not reflect what truly happens in day to day life. This paper critically examines this statement and provides an example of an embarrassing essay to illustrate the meaning of: "As a work gets more autobiographical, more intricate, more confessional, more embarrassing, it breaks into fragments."

Real stories, which are intimate, confessional or embarrassing, carry different elements and ideas which lend themselves to various interpretations. They do not consist of a series of events leading up to one great revelation, but are a series of interestingly disparate and divergent revelations in themselves. This is because life is not prepackaged along narrative lines, which are always strictly followed but it consists of many points of diversion. This means that a confessional, embarrassing and intricate story presents the truth about life in a better manner than a reported fictional story presenting imaginations of what life is about. This is true because of the very nature of difference in characters between individuals, which is expressed in different reactions to different situations. Life is not a coherent, measurable whole which concludes in a major single revelation but it comes in bits and pieces which change characters, decisions and outcomes. This fact is illustrated through the following confessional story. I am sitting on my front porch thinking about what will be happening later today: I will be taking my five year old son and seven year old daughter for a swim. I can’t help but feel a sense of apprehension at the thought of having to see them attempt something I never quite became used to. More worrying to me is the likelihood of one of them failing or drowning. I have never quite known how to swim. I can float for thirty seconds but after that I just sink slowly to the cold floor of the pool. I have been to schools where swimming was taught but no. I remember our teacher in school shouting “move your legs! Move your legs!” as my classmates and I clung onto the rails of the swimming pool and oscillated our feet at the surface of the water. It was a great lesson on how to move on the water and attempt to float. The previous teacher, Mr. Smith had drowned in this very pool just a month to this lesson. That, coupled with my fear of large masses of water became a great impediment to my learning.

Here comes my son now. He is looking excited as he runs around the porch barefoot. He reminds me of myself, learning new things, feeling new textures for the first time and tasting new things: soil, grass, butterflies and even unmentionable stuff. He is wearing a flowered shirt and green shorts. The shirt looks a bit inappropriate I think it has a large marijuana leaf at the back. Something a hippy might wear. He is a naughty one, this one, always breaking things. But aren’t all boys? My daughter is more mannered. How could I have fathered such a composed and mature creature? She is asking me what time we shall be leaving the house and whether we should carry lunch money. We are getting closer and closer to the dreaded moment but I find solace in the little things I am currently experiencing. My wife Carol is in the kitchen putting together sandwiches for everyone. We have been married for thirteen years. Yes, I know. I also get surprised together with those people I tell this. She is a wonderful wife and her cooking is always delectable. Maybe it is responsible for my ever expanding gut but hey! I am not complaining. Her favorite color is blue and this can be seen all over the house and in her car. It reminds me of the ocean and Oh! It reminds me that soon, I will be taking my children out for a swim.

More importantly, it reminds me that cannot swim. She will not be coming to our little get away but how I wish she would. She is an excellent swimmer. She swam competitively in college and even has a few trophies on the mantelpiece. 17-nil is how I like to think of her achievements in comparison to mine. This is a little bit harsh but it is the reality I have to try and avoid every day. Remembering this gives me a bad feeling in the stomach. Don’t get me wrong, I love her to the moon and back. However, her achievements and her favorite color remind me of my failures and numerous “miss-hits” I almost became a doctor; I almost bought a Ferrari in college; I almost became rich but sold my shares too early; I almost became drafted to the NBA; I almost learnt how to swim. I cannot swim.

Life is made up of different splinters of, which do not necessarily lead to a big revelation. The more biographical, intricate and confessional a work becomes, it splinters. Life is not ordered or structured along narrative lines which must be strictly followed. This means that the different constituent happenings in life affect decisions, directions and outcomes. This is reflected in the confessional story above where different reflections and memories lead to fragments of ideas and plot. Different events are interwoven into each other rather than being one continuous stream of happenings. This should be considered in various shows and literary works to avoid the “unreal” unidirectional narrative type of work.

Understanding Media: Reality TV Shows—The Jersey Shore Essay

The proposal, main discussion, works cited.

Digging deep into the annals of history, one cannot help, but, feel awed at the immense progress that has been made in the arena of communication and media technology. In just one century, we have been able to move from the basic communication methods when people expressed themselves through signals to the modern age communication methods where, through the click of a button, one can transmit a message from one corner of the world to the other.

In essence, the media industry was traditionally used to generally inform the public with newspaper and radios being the most used media. However, the advancement of technologies and needs by various audiences has introduced other aspects of media such as entertainment and marketing—with Media such as television and the internet gaining an increasingly large audience. In this paper, central focus is going to be on analyzing visual media, specifically reality TVs, and how their influence has been felt in the world today.

In doing so, The Jersey Shore , a popular reality TV show in America, will be distinctively forecasted with other shows such as Friends being sparingly mentioned for comparison purposes. The Jersey Shore was chosen based on the various media dynamics entailed in it, its unmatched popularity, and the numerous themes addressed in it. All these intricacies make it a fitting show worth being analyzed.

Overview of the Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore is an American-based Reality TV that commenced in the year 2009 at MTV. Ever since then, the series has been able to produce several episodes and, currently, the audience is waiting for the premiere of season 6 which is to be released in the due course of this year (Gorman).

In essence, the show revolves around the lives of 8 participants staying at the Jersey Shore in U.S. hence its name. Though in season 2 and 4, the cast moved to Miami Beach and Italy respectively, and then came back to their original residence in the seasons in between.

More importantly, the Jersey Shore depicts various themes in teenage life and early adulthood such as love, alcohol and drugs, relationships, work and how people tend to communicate to one another in all these facets of life. As we move from one season to another, various dynamics are introduced and removed while we get to witness how the manner of communication amongst the housemates changes.

Being a reality show, meaning that we get to witness live and spontaneous unfolding of events; the audience experiences a lot of suspense, intrigue and drama. This, probably, is the reason why teenagers are addicted to this “reality show” with reports from several scholarly quarters affirming that the Jersey Shore is MTV’s most viewed telecast series, in spite of just having been incepted recently.

Main analysis of the Jersey Shore: Its Ratings, Criticisms and Themes

As glimpsed above, the Jersey Shore stands as the most watched Reality TV of its kind. Recent reports indicate that the Jersey Shore hit an all time high of 8.45 million viewers as of 2011in audiences aged between 18 and 49 (Gorman). So to what pleasure does this reality show owe this outstanding number of viewers?

According to Campbell et al. (155-165), storytelling plays an important role within reality shows. Since in reality show teenagers, through their various interactions, get to tell stories about themselves in a realistic way; most audiences love them as it makes it easy for viewers to identify with the reality TV participants.

This is in opposition to other forms of TV shows where people act based on scripts and pre-planned actions. In the Jersey Shore, storytelling is typified by the show participants through the use of common communication language and engaging in habitual things that are common and relevant to the world today like going to the gym, a club or even a date. Resultantly, identifying with these scenarios makes the show a favorite to its audiences.

On another point, Campbell et al. (163) asserts that reality TVs help the networks and cable providers to easily deal with the high cost of programming. This is typified by featuring non-actors, cheap sets, and no extensive scripts. In effect, producing them becomes cheaper and thus easily available to local and international audiences when compared to other TV shows. This price factor, obviously, plays a crucial role in the accessibility and acceptance of the show by its audience.

Closely related to the above point is the distribution channels used by the marketers of this Reality TV series. A research on the internet shows how the Jersey Shore is available in a myriad of accessible ways including (but not limited to): movie stores in the popular DVD format, over the internet in peer-to-peer sharing forums, in and in theatres.

Also, there has been the increased marketing of the show in social forums like Facebook and Twitter . Based on the ever increasing relevance, popularity need and use of social media in the marketing world today; it is self explanatory why the popularity of the Jersey Shore keeps on escalating.

On another note, the themes depicted in the Jersey Shore are, according to critics, hugely relevant to the youths and adults today (Friedman). In communication, it is not only vital that information reaches the targeted public but it is more important that the disseminated information is relevant.

In today’s world, the themes of love, sex, relationships and work are among the most crucial issues that youths and adults get to deal with. Portraying these issues in a captivating way goes a long way in entertaining while also educating the public on how to deal with dilemmatic situations.

To a large extent, there are a number of moral lessons that can be found in the show. However, to some critics, the Jersey Shore does more in glorifying risky behaviors such as premarital sex, use of foul language and alcoholism rather than providing a way forward out of these issues. A pin-pointed stance as to whether the show is hugely negative or positive—in terms of its educative content—is yet to be decided by these critics.

Relevance/ Effects of the Jersey Shore’s Content on its Audience

Just like most reality TVs, the Jersey Shore has had its fair share of impact on its audience. According to Friedman, the show’s relevance to its targeted public is exhibited by the various lexicons and unique phrases that it has apparently introduced in the popular American culture.

A good example here is the use of the term “Guido” as an ethnic slur referencing to cool cast members of the show. Also, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Chicago are reported, by Friedman, to having had classes and conferences discussing the relevance and influence of the Jersey Shore on its audiences (Brown).

Comparison with Other Reality TVs (Friends)

Friends is an American sitcom premiered in 1994 on NBC and the last episode was broadcasted in 2004. In its 10-year tenure, Friends managed to scoop several coveted awards, receive a lot of praise and modicum criticisms. Essentially, Friends, just like the Jersey Shore, revolves around the themes of love, friendship, and relationships amongst various teenagers and adults (Jicha).

However, unlike the Jersey Show which received a good reception right from the onset; Friends got off to a slow start with very few people warmly welcoming it. However, as time went on, it received more and more acceptance and, by the time it was airing its last episode; it had a huge multicultural audience from across the world.

It is also worth noting that, in Friends, the themes are addressed with more humor and discretion (in terms of language and nudity) when compared to the Jersey Shore. This, according to some movie reviewers is based on the fact that Friends was premiered w hen permissiveness and freedom of airing indiscrete content was hugely opposed. However, as of today, the freedom of the Media in airing such content has been improved.

The scripted and pre-planned nature of events in Friends also reduces the edginess and high suspense that comes with Reality TVs like the Jersey Shore which occur more arbitrarily. This, probably, is the reason why despite the thrilling and captivating nature of Friends; its ratings cannot match those of the Jersey Shore.

Finally, the better technology used in producing and marketing the Jersey Shore is a key reason why it is more accepted than friends. This aspect, hugely, underlines the importance of the progress made by media today.

From the above discussions, it is eminently noteworthy that the skills used to pass information have, over time, continued to improve greatly. With these improvements come a myriad of advantages (such as better viewership and clarity of visual contents) and challenges as well (such as the less regulated freedoms of the media that has arguably encouraged vices such as sex before marriage and drug abuse).

However, in as much as the media has a role to play in the dissemination of both negative and positive information to the public; it is inherent to state that most blame is on the public. Based on the changes in behaviors, freedoms and culture by the general public, it is only expected that media coverage happens in the same line since the media’s chief responsibility is to give an exact picture of the current happenings—whether it is good or bad.

Nonetheless, the ethics of media dictate that professional discretion should be used when covering, processing and disseminating information to the public. For this reason, media experts should strive to eliminate media messages and contents containing abhorred issues in the society such as excessive nudity.

Commendably, a good number of media organizations and individuals have reportedly working round the clock in order to formulate ways in which the communication challenges faced today are solved while media messages are disseminated objectively. If such steps in the right direction are encouraged; the complaints that have been witnessed in shows like the Jersey shore will be hugely avoided while positive and helpful information reaches the general public as required.

250 Words Essay on Reality Shows Boon Or Bane

Reality shows have become a popular form of entertainment on television. They showcase real people in real-life situations, often with unexpected twists. The question arises, are these shows a boon or a bane?

Reality Shows as a Boon

Reality shows can be a boon in many ways. They provide a platform for people to show their talent. Many individuals have gained fame and success through these shows. For viewers, they offer a break from scripted drama. These shows are often engaging and exciting, keeping the audience hooked.

Reality Shows as a Bane

On the other hand, reality shows can also be a bane. They often show conflicts and fights for the sake of ratings. This can send a wrong message to young viewers. Some shows also invade personal lives of participants, causing mental stress. In addition, these shows can create an unrealistic view of life, as they are often edited for more drama.

In conclusion, reality shows can be both a boon and a bane. They can provide entertainment and opportunities, but they can also create harmful effects. It is important for viewers, especially young ones, to understand that these shows are not always a true reflection of reality. They should be watched with a critical eye. Therefore, the role of parents and teachers becomes crucial in guiding children on what to take away from these shows.

500 Words Essay on Reality Shows Boon Or Bane

Reality shows have become a significant part of television programming around the world. They provide a platform for ordinary people to showcase their talents and gain fame. But are these shows a boon or a bane? This essay aims to explore the pros and cons of reality shows.

The Bright Side of Reality Shows

Reality shows can be a blessing in many ways. They offer a stage for people to display their skills, whether it’s singing, dancing, cooking, or surviving in the wild. These shows can be a stepping stone to a successful career in the entertainment industry.

Reality shows also provide a source of entertainment for viewers. They allow us to see real-life stories and situations, which can be more relatable and engaging than scripted drama. Some reality shows even educate viewers about different cultures, lifestyles, and professions.

The Dark Side of Reality Shows

On the other hand, reality shows can also have negative impacts. Many of these shows focus on competition, which can lead to stress and tension among the participants. The pressure to perform and win can be immense, especially for younger participants.

Reality shows often invade the personal lives of the participants, exposing their private moments to the public. This lack of privacy can lead to emotional stress and can harm their mental health.

Additionally, some reality shows can set unrealistic expectations for success. Participants may believe that appearing on a reality show is a guaranteed ticket to fame and fortune, which is rarely the case.

Impact on Society

Reality shows can also influence society in both positive and negative ways. They can promote diversity and tolerance by showcasing people from different backgrounds and walks of life. They can also inspire viewers to pursue their passions and dreams.

But reality shows can also promote harmful stereotypes and behaviors. Some shows focus on conflict and drama, which can encourage aggressive and disrespectful behavior. Moreover, the constant exposure to the glamorous lives of reality show stars can create a false image of success and happiness.

In conclusion, reality shows can be both a boon and a bane. They provide opportunities for people to showcase their talents and provide entertainment for viewers. But they can also create stress for participants, invade their privacy, and promote harmful behaviors and stereotypes. As viewers, it’s important to watch these shows with a critical eye and understand that what we see on screen may not always reflect reality.

Reality Shows: Real or Fake Argumentative Essay

Reality Shows: Real or Fake Argumentative Essay

What is a Reality Show? A television reality show features talent culled from the ranks of ‘ordinary’ people, not professionally trained actors. Reality show producers typically shoot hundreds of hours of footage per episode and use creative editing to create a narrative thread. Subjects of a reality show may be given some rudimentary directions offscreen, but the point is to allow the performers to act and react as normally as possible. A reality show is not to be confused with a documentary, in which the subjects are asked to ignore the cameras and behave naturally.

Many reality show producers encourage participants to play to the cameras as characters or use private taped conversations, called confessionals, as a form of narration. For many years, the television industry favored scripted television programs over the unpredictable and potentially litigious reality show form. An early reality show called Candid Camera, hosted by the unassuming Allen Funt, demonstrated that carefully edited clips of ordinary people reacting to contrived situations could be a ratings success. Early game shows featuring contestants selected from the audience also provided moments of unscripted reality.

Groucho Marx’s game show You Bet Your Life! featured extended interviews with ordinary contestants, although Marx was thoroughly briefed on their backgrounds before the show started. Television shows during the 1960s and 1970s were usually scripted, with a cast of professional actors creating the characters. It was believed that a reality show featuring untrained actors working without a guiding script would be virtually unwatchable. There would be no way to create a satisfying storyline ending precisely after the allotted half-hour or hour running time of a typical scripted show.

The only network amenable to the idea of a true reality show in the 1970s was the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). A documentary called An American Family followed the real lives of the Loud family as they dealt with the parents’ impending divorce. During the late 1980s, a syndicated reality show called COPS began showing real policemen performing their duties as hand-held cameras rolled. The success of COPS spurred other production companies to create reality shows featuring real footage captured by amateur photographers, local news organizations, and police surveillance cameras.

This documentary form of reality show proved to be quite popular, especially among the younger demographics sought by advertisers. Meanwhile, another form of reality show began to take shape. Producers of The Real World recruited groups of twenty-somethings to live in a furnished apartment while cameras recorded every public moment of their lives together. The footage was carefully edited to create a satisfying arc of episodes, even if the participants appeared to be prodded into certain confrontations at times.

Shows like The Real World proved that television audiences could enjoy watching unscripted performers reacting to somewhat scripted circumstances. Perhaps the most groundbreaking reality show on American network television was CBS’ Survivor, debuting in 1999. Survivor featured teams of non-professional actors culled from thousands of audition tapes. Its success prompted network executives to greenlight a number of other shows employing a cast of camera-ready civilians and armies of creative editors.

Professional actors, directors, and writers have all voiced strong objections to this new form of reality programming, but a reality show is usually inexpensive to produce and consistently reaches its target audience. There is some evidence that the reality show format is losing some momentum, but finding successful replacement programming has also proven to be difficult. How Did Reality TV Begin? If you date the beginnings of realty TV to MTV’s The Real World or the CBS network’s Survivor, you’re off by several decades. There have been a variety of unscripted and live television shows that date back to the 1940s.

Among them, Candid Camera, which debuted in 1948, is often thought of as the first example of reality television, where people were unwittingly exposed to pranks or silly situations by host Allen Funt. Certain competition or game shows were also considered early versions of reality TV, as were live airings of programs like The Miss America Pageant and the Oscars. It doesn’t get more real than David Niven’s 1974 ad lib comments at the Academy Awards as a streaker crossed behind him on the stage. Most television historians don’t consider documentaries or lengthy news stories as reality TV, but again these evoked people’s interest greatly.

Anthropological studies of tribal groups, or watching the news “unfold” through camera coverage of events, like President Kennedy’s assassination, could be called the ancestors of modern reality TV. Another example of earlier than The Real World reality TV is the program Cops, which premiered in 1989. This is a few years before MTV would take on their ambitious Real World production, and showcased police officers in different cities making arrests or dealing with people behaving in criminal or dangerous fashion.

The program is the longest running of reality TV programs, and celebrated its 19th anniversary on the air in 2008. Yet many people do see the programs above mentioned as predecessors to programs like The Real World first airing in 1992, and then the reality TV boom that occurred in the 2000s with programs like Survivor and American Idol. What MTV’s program offered was a look at seven strangers all occupying house space together over a period of several months. MTV almost didn’t start this trend, and early in their conception of the series, they thought about having actors play out scripts that would seem close to reality.

Instead the show’s creators ultimately opted for providing viewers with video voyeurism, and an opportunity to see the “real lives” of several people. Of course, as with all “reality” TV, these real lives were shown when they were most tense or dramatic; editors went through hours of film to produce what was aired on television, since real life doesn’t always make for the most exciting television moments. The idea of combining competitive elements with reality TV came in the form of a Swedish TV program called Expedition: Robinson, which first aired in 1997.

This was three years prior to the first airing of Survivor and in fact, inspired Mark Burnett’s Survivor, who had to lease the concept from the creators of the Swedish show. Several other countries also produced similar programs, but the most famous of these in American television is undoubtedly Burnett’s variation of the Swedish show, which premiered in 2000. From Survivor other contest reality shows emerged, and some like American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, Project Runway, and The Bachelor have been big hits.

In fact, many minor celebrities felt that contributing or being the subject of a reality show might bolster their careers, leading to “celebreality” shows like The Anna Nicole Show, The Osbournes and Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. Other celebs sought to compete in programs similar to the Survivor or game show format leading to programs like Celebrity Fit Club, and Dancing with the Stars. At present, you’ll find a vast variety of reality shows on TV, but just how real is reality TV? Most combine some real moments, with a few fake ones. For instance, not all footage of competitions in Survivor features the contestants.

Some is recreated afterward to provide aerial shots. “Live” performances on American Idol and especially the judge’s comments may be prepared in advance when the judges watch dress rehearsals. Celebrities who allow camera access often write into their contracts the ability to veto any scene they don’t want shown. It’s semi-real, usually not scripted, but not exactly “real” in the sense of total access to all footage without editing for dramatic purpose. How Real Are Reality Shows? Do reality show writers ever invent stories that didn’t really happen? A lot of people ask the question, “How real is reality television? and, “Am I watching something true or is it being made up for me? or, “Are they being scripted to do what they’re doing? ” Different shows have different levels of manipulation. Some reality shows are very heavily manipulated by their producers to the point where they’ll pull a person aside and say, “Why don’t you go in there are get into a fight with Suzie, because it’ll make you a bigger TV star. ” Then they’ll go in there and get into a fight with Suzie, and you’ll see it on TV as a real fight. Some reality show producers do hardly anything at all, and they let events play out as they occur, and they try to tell you that story.

Some producers are in between the two, where they might suggest that it’d be better if you got in a fight with Suzie, or they might interview you and say, “How do you feel about Suzie? Are you feeling like she’s a bitch? ” They use the power of suggestion. There are lots of different ways to manipulate reality shows and people, and different shows do it to different levels. My policy is to stack the deck properly ahead of time: cast well, make your set pieces interesting and create problems for the cast. Simply making someone the boss for the day is enough, usually, to get things going.

You can do enough and not manipulate the cast so much that things start feeling fake. I feel like the home audience can smell it when a reality show feels fake. I feel like a reality show should do its best to deliver to the audience unpredictable real life as much as possible, because that’s actually why they want to see the show. If the audience feels like they’re watching something fake, they will reject you. The better reality shows are a lot less fake than the shows that are not so good. Are reality shows edited to create fake stories?

There is a phrase we have in television called ‘anything appeal’ and what that means is that you don’t want to find yourself in a situation of trying to tell a story that really didn’t happen. It is really hard to do that. If two people are best friends in a reality show it is hard. You can make them enemies through the editing. You can make it so that every time you see one girl say that she doesn’t like Brad, the producer can switch the name from Brad to Shu. The truth is that Shu is her best friend and you are digging a hole for yourself. It is the tangled web of deception. You can’t continue the fakeness of the story.

Generally, if you don’t know what you are doing then you don’t fake up a story. Are reality show contests ever rigged? It is against the law to defraud the American public and so it is against the law to present a contest to the American public and say that it is real when it is not, in the same way that it is illegal to tell someone that your little pill cures cancer. It is illegal to say a person answered this question correctly and they really didn’t, or this person just won over all these other contestants because they were the smartest one, when really they were the ones that were being coached.

All of that is illegal; it is fraud. In the entertainment business, when you are saying to the reality show audience, “This is a real contest and it is a fair contest and the winner won on skill and knowledge” they really better have done that, or else they could be sued or prosecuted. How do networks ensure reality show competitions are fair? In terms of game shows and reality shows, there are a lot of precautions taken to make sure they stay fair. There’s a division of the network, probably, called Standards and Practices.

They usually have a representative on the set that watches everything, that randomizes the questions that get asked. The producers want an entertaining show. The truth is that their incentive is not a fair competition. Their incentive is: “Was it fun? Was it interesting? Was there a tie that was broken at the last second? ” They would rather it was the most exciting possible outcome every time, which as we all know in real life is impossible. If you’re really a fair competition, you never know, somebody might run away with it in the first two minutes. You just have to live with that, the same as with a football game.

To answer the question, the reality show producers are pushing against their inner nature to make the show fair, and they’re usually held in check by outside forces, like a standards and practices department, or a lawyer on the set, or other things that are there put in place to protect everyone from an illegal or fraudulent contest. How is ‘reality’ manipulated on reality TV? I think it’s pretty much acknowledged that they’re telling, in general, a true story on a reality show, but there is a lot of creative leeway with the editing, with how you amp up the emotion of the story that you’re telling.

This is not just through simple things like music, but also through a careful choice of interview bites, even manipulation of interview bites to help tell the story. When we produce the reality shows, we don’t just let people sit in front of a camera and decide what they want to say and do, because it would be actually like taping real life, and it wouldn’t be interesting. What we do is we set up a situation where the people have to perform, basically. For example, we’ll give them a challenge that you must beat this other team at this game or else you will be eliminated tonight.

Once you set that up, you put things in motion. It’s something they wouldn’t do normally. If we just put cameras on people they wouldn’t compete normally in silly little games and obstacle courses and photo-shoots; they would just sit and talk to each other. Instead, we basically force the hand of action and we map out a path or an obstacle course of tasks for these people to accomplish, using all kinds of different methods: either they want to win money, or they want to be America’s next top model, or whatever it is – there is some reason to keep propelling things forward on a reality show.

Are Reality Shows Real or Fake? The answer to the question, are reality shows real, is obviously no. In the earlier times, when there were other forms of reality TV, these shows had some part that displayed real emotion and behavior. In the recent times, however, they are nothing but hyped series of episodes where the cast (even non-actors), is made to put up a drama and act funny for entertainment. Today there are many reality show ideas for talent hunts, game shows and stunt competitions, where all the contestants compete for money.

Take a look at some more facts on reality television and find out, are reality shows real. Are Reality Shows Scripted? It all began with the super hit series of Big Brother, where a bunch of not so famous celebrities had to live with strangers 24/7 and were cut off from the whole world. They competed against each other for money and the last survivor, won it all. Though these shows are not completely scripted, the backbone of the show is surely written. Once the rules and regulations to be followed are jotted down, the rest of the show is carried further by the characters in the show.

Because all reality shows have to start with introducing strangers to each other on the show sets, the drama is created when they react, make friends, don’t get along and sometimes even get in a fight. Today as the effects of reality TV are enormous on viewers, entertainment channels are coming up with many such shows. Some reality shows which involve videos about certain events like police chases, training academies, etc. are however not scripted, as they are 100% real.

1464 words essay on reality shows of Indian Television

reality shows essay

Indians are high on the emotional quotient and anything that strikes the emotional chord is an instant hit in India. The success of reality shows in India can be attributed to a great extent to this weakness. The relief that these shows provide from the saas-bahu soaps is another reason for their immense popularity. The rising popularity of the reality shows on Indian television channels has added a new dimension to the production of TV programs. These shows give opportunities to the prodigies residing in the interiors of the country to showcase their talent.

The craze for reality television hit India when channel V came up with Viva, a band of five young singers. When auditions were announced, young dreamers gathered in huge numbers to give their luck a try. They cried when they failed and celebrated when they triumphed. The audience lapped up this overdose of emotions thrown with open hands. The show was a big success and an inspiration for both the shrews’ business minds and also for the young dreamers waiting for their share of fame.

Since then there has been no looking back as reality television proliferated with each passing day. With the registration for each show surpassing the last one and the audience votes pouring in billions, all doubts over the acceptability of these shows by the Indian audience subsided. The real life Bunty and Bablis came forward for the auditions of Indian Idol, Fame Gurukul, India’s Best, Roadies, etc. Almost every channel today has an Abhijeet Sawant or a Qazi to boast about.

The potential of reality shows was exploited by various television channels. Kaun Banega Crorepati, India’s take on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, catapulted Star TV to the number one position. Similarly, Sony’s popularity saw a huge rise after it launched Indian Idol, an adaptation of a hit British reality show. It was reality television that wrote the destiny of television channel Star One. Its two realities shows The Great Indian Laughter Challenge and Nach Baliye brought popularity to the channel.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

Reality shows not only changed the destinies of many television channels but also of many ordinary people. People like Kunal Ganjawala, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shreya Ghosal and Debojit are some of the successful finds of reality television. It was only because of these shows that a teashop owner, Sunil Pal, became a laughter champion and Prashant, a sepoy from Darjeeling, became the third Indian Idol.

Celebrity reality shows are another aspect of reality television that has become extremely popular with the audience. Apart from the overwhelming Television Rating Points (TRPs) that these shows command, they also have to their credit revamping images of some celebrities and bringing back to limelight some of the lost stars. Item queen Rakhi Sawant witnessed a change in image after appearing on the reality show Big Boss. Lost names like Rahul Roy and Baba Sehgal rose to limelight again because of shows like these.

Reality television is a win-win situation for everyone, be it contestants, channels or the viewers. For the viewers, they are refreshing change from the somnolent saas-bahu dramas. The biggest gainers, however, are the contestants who get the right platform to showcase their talent. There is a lot of untapped talent in our country and these shows by extending their reach to small cities provide an opportunity to bring out this hidden talent. A chef from Chamba managed to reach the final round in Zee TV SA Re Ga Ma Pa. In Star One’s Lakme Fashion

House, 16 aspiring fashion designers strived to create a design to win an assignment with Donatella at the house of Versace—a lifetime opportunity for any beginner. These shows give an instant recognition to the contestants. A chance to showcase their talent on such a big platform and in front of such esteemed judges is something for which any struggler can die. The high TRPs that these shows command explains the advantage they have for television channels.

The fact that the contestants in these shows are ordinary people with whom audiences immediately relate to is the biggest trump card of these shows. The vicarious joy which people get in seeing somebody from amongst them living an almost impossible dream glues people to these shows. However, people do not lap anything and everything that is served to them in the name of reality shows. For example, Sony TV’s Kahin Na Kahin Koi Hai, for which they roped in cinestar Madhuri Dixit, failed to strike a chord with the viewers. Similarly Kamjor Kadi Kaun, aired on Star and Jeeto Chappar Phad Ke on Zee failed to create magic.

Reality shows have also had their share of criticism. Questions have been raised over the authenticity of the voting system on the basis of which the contestants are voted out. Fingers have been raised over the very method of selecting contestants for these shows. Questions have also been raised on the process of throwing contestants out on the basis of the votes cast by people sitting at home with hardly any knowledge about the technicalities involved in a contest like singing or dancing.

Despite all this, the fact is that such shows enjoy great popularity among the audience. Reality shows are a ray of hope for the ordinary people. These shows not only give them the courage to dream but also the assistance to turn their dreams into reality. Such shows provide them with lifetime opportunity.

Reality shows are important as they create awareness for the channel through media coverage. For instance, Rahul Dulhania Le Jaayega, a reality show on NDTV Imagine, managed to garner a Television Rating Points (TRP) of 5.6 in its concluding episode. Though these shows are high on investments, they have become an important genre in the Hindi entertainment space. A single episode of a reality show, hosted by a celebrity, could cost up to 1.5 Crore while an episode of a fiction show can be produced for about 18-20 lakh. Actor Abhishek Bachchan received approximately one crore per episode of National Bingo Night, while Akshay Kumar charged 1.25 crore per episode for Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 1.

The definition of reality show has changed with the passage of time. Before the hugely popular Kaun Banega Crore pati (KBC), reality shows were limited to quiz programmes, chat shows, music-based countdown shows or game shows. Many of the reality programmes are adapted from tried and tested international formats. While Sach Ka Saamna was accepted from Moment Of Truth, another show is Jungle Se Mujhe Bcachao, which showed several celebrities camping in a jungle, was the Indian version of I’m A Celebrity.

Get Me Out Of Here. India’s Got Talent was an adaptation of Britain’s Got Talent, while the idea for Rakhi Kui Swayamvar was taken from The Bachelorette. Similarly, Dus Ka Dum, which saw Bollywood star Salman Khan play host, was a copy off Power of 10 and Sarkaar Ki Duniya was modeled on Survivor.

Some original shows like Saanp Seedi, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Antakshari, Tol Mol Ke Bol and Boogie Woogie did surface on the small screen before 2000, but post-KBC producers started lapping up foreign entertainment programmes. Some of the other shows that made their way to Indian television post-KBC are Indian Idol (American Idol), Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa (Dancing With The Stars), Kya Aap Paanchvi Paas Se Tez Hain (Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader) and Bigg Boss (Big Brother).

On the other hand, made-in-India formats have their own charm. Formats as simple as Antakshari have proved that India has the potential to develop and sustain such formats. Another success has been Sa Re Ga Ma, which also brought talented singers like Shreya Ghosal to the forefront at a very early age. Other formats have been Cinestar Ki Khoj which introduced young talent to the glamorous world of Bollywood, and Business Baazigar, a game that tested the intellectual and entrepreneurial capability of people of different age groups.

The best thing about a reality show is that it is real, interactive and places the viewers on a pedestal which enables them to decide the winners. There have also been shows like Khulja Sim, a remake of the American show, Let’s Make A Deal, where the viewer could play and participate in the show. Same was the case with Kismey Kitnaa Hain Dum, a remake of famous British hit, Night Fever.

It featured a karaoke contest where viewers could sing along. The best part about these shows is; that the viewers go through the trials and tribulations of the participants. The ingredients of an ideal reality show are simple. It must appeal to all and the idea should be original and entertaining. Reality shows also offer valuable lessons to be learnt about viewer’s tastes and preferences.
