Harvard Business School Case Studies are designed for classroom use by individual students. They are similar to course packs. Licensing restricts use to individuals. The Caltech Library cannot purchase these materials, and cannot obtain them through DocuServe (Interlibrary Loan). However, you may purchase a copy of any case yourself for individual use directly from Harvard Business Publishing for $8.95:

Go to the Harvard Business Review Store at store.hbr.org and click on 'Case Studies.'

For instructors:

A separate copy must be purchased for each individual student. First, you must already have purchased a single copy of the product you wish to reproduce. If you need to make additional copies to distribute, you must purchase copyright permission (check the box to 'Add copyright permissions' during the purchasing process and add the number of students). Access to case studies expires six months after purchase date.

Perspectives revenue, how hbr uses case studies and ebooks to sell premium subscriptions.

When looking for ways to add value for premium subscribers, Harvard Business Review dug decades into the past. As Nini Diana, HBR’s director of consumer marketing put it, “Our archive is gold.”

For 100 years, Harvard Business School has created case studies that bring real-world business dilemmas to life for students, entrepreneurs, and professionals around the world. These case studies dissect real-life situations in which managers have to make key decisions. Often, they must do so despite having incomplete information, conflicting priorities, or the pressure of ticking clocks.

Harvard’s case studies often make their way into college lesson plans. Educators can access course packets to use in their teaching. “It’s an entire collection of solutions to almost any type of business problem,” Diana said.

Turns out that Harvard’s 640 ebooks and thousands of case studies provide such a valuable selling point that one in five subscribers opts to pay 50% more to access them. “Despite being written eight or 10 years ago, they still have relevance,” Diana said. “A superuser of our content can benefit from any of them.” And HBR has found it wise to focus on the needs of the superuser.

A valuable collection

Individually, most Harvard case studies sell for $8.95 per PDF and $15.05 for a printed copy. Ebooks are typically priced at$19.95 each. A five-ebook series on effective management — with titles including Getting The Right Work Done and Making Every Meeting Matter — sells for $90.

Certainly, some users are looking to solve a single issue, or for a very specific topic. However, HBR audiences generally face a wide range of business challenges and are interested in learning more. So, for just $18 a month or $180 a year, 20% opt for HBR’s highest-priced subscription tier. It’s the only one that includes access to a curated collection of case studies and ebooks. That price also includes HBR’s print magazine, full digital access, and full access to HBR.org’s archives.

Compare that to HBR’s entry level “digital” subscription, which offers access to HBR.org and its archive for $12 a month or $99 a year. For $12 a month or $120 a year, subscribers get full digital access to HBR.org along with six issues of the print magazine — but no case studies or ebooks.

The premium tier offers a superior value for the type of audience that has the greatest affinity for HBR. In fact, Diana said the offer has been appealing enough to convince 20% of new subscribers to ante up for more. The offer has been particularly effective for driving subscriptions outside of North America, according to Diana.

“As an institutional philosophy, we value print a great deal,” Diana said. Still, consumers who start with lower-priced digital-only subscriptions tend to skip the mid-tier offering when upgrading their plans demonstrating that it’s not print that’s the selling point. Rather, it is those case studies and ebook collections.

Updates and value building

While premium subscribers don’t get access to every Harvard Business School case study and ebook, editors regularly update the selection that is available to reflect current corporate conversations. Recent topics of focus have included Blockchain, Black business leadership, and building workforces for the future.

A new ebook is made available to premium subscribers each quarter. Premium users are able to access each title for a full year or until their subscription runs out.

Subscribers currently can’t choose their own ebooks. However, that is a potential change user feedback has put on the team’s radar. “We’re always trying to rethink the product mix without upsetting the customer experience,” Diana said.

HBR learned how much its audience values ebooks and case studies through extensive user research, Diana said. Case study and ebook access were the two benefits users said would be most valuable to them — and most likely to convince them to pay more for an HBR subscription.

They are “that thing Harvard can offer that no one else can,” Diana said.

Aside from the above, the library does not have access to case studies published by business schools. You can find case studies published in journals and magazines by searching for case studies as a Subject in Business Source Complete or ABI/INFORM . WARC is an excellent source for finding advertising case studies by industry sector, campaign objectives and target audience.

Cases & Case Studies

The definition of "Case Study" varies from publication to publication. The "case studies" in traditional journals and books are not necessarily the same as commercial "cases" from publishers like Harvard Business School Publishing.

The Library does NOT collect commercial cases due to licensing restrictions imposed by the publishers. Each student must pay for their own copies. To find and use these commercial cases, go to Harvard Business Publishing. By registering for a free educator account , you can create an online coursepack to provide online access to specific cases (with "up to 60% off" for students).

There isn't one single clearinghouse similar to Harvard Business School Publishing or Case Centre to search for free cases. Below is a list of sources that provide free cases on various topics.

HBR articles in Business Source Premier (BSP, an EBSCOhost database) cannot be used for teaching purposes.

Why can't instructors use HBR articles since they are available in Business Source Premier? -- It's HBP's policy. The articles in Business Source Premier are for "research" only; articles used for "teaching purposes" are not covered by the license and not free to the students.

Can students use Business Source Premier on their own and cite HBR articles in their papers or coursework? -- Yes, if they are doing research and find these articles serendipitously.

Can I just tell students to find these articles without linking to them? -- No, if the students are told to find them for a class, the articles are used for "teaching." HBP does track the usage of HBR and a sudden increase in the search and download of a specific article will be flagged as violation.

What are my options if I want to link to articles for a class so students can read them for free? -- The hbr.org website has many articles in full text and it is okay to link to them for a class. However, guest users and registered users can only view a limited number of free articles per month.

-- If the HBR article is also in one of the HBR's 10 Must Reads ebooks , you can link to the ebook. To find out if an article is in the ebooks, just do a search by the article title in the library catalog.

-- Articles from most other journals PSU Library subscribes to can be used as course materials, whether you put them on Course Reserves , link to them in your course page , or verbally assign them as required reading. The Library is already paying for these resources so your students can read them without any additional cost.

Who can provide more information regarding the course pack? -- I recommend contacting HBP directly .

What else do I need to know about HBR articles in BSP?

-- Starting 8/1/2013, Harvard Business Publishing has restricted access to HBR's 500 most popular articles (initial list -- titles change over time) to "read-only" in BSP. These articles cannot be printed or linked to from a persistent link. You can still search for them in BSP, download the PDF, or email the PDF to yourself.

**Articles may not be copied from library databases for use in class; and they may not be borrowed or purchased by the Library Interlibrary Loan Department. This is a rule established by HBSP, not the library.

Faculty often assign Harvard Business School Case Studies in classroom assignments. The Harvard Business School has instituted a policy by which any faculty member or student who needs to use an HBS Case Study, can only do so one of two ways.

1) The Professor can purchase a license to use the Case Study in class. This can be done throught this link: Harvard Business Publishing for Educators Educators Website Help.

2) The student can purchase the article/case study from HBSP for a one-time use. This can be done through the same link (after registering): HBSP Online Bookstore for Students
