Once all of that is completed, you can tutor students of different ages and assist them with their homework. Your hourly rate will be based on the subject you choose to tutor.

This micro-tutoring site lets you bid on homework questions from students, with answers costing anywhere from $5 to $20. In addition to this, the site has a Notebank with over 20 million study documents from universities all over the world. Anyone with a degree can bid on questions; however, students will base their decision on profiles, stats, and reviews, so make sure your profile is well-made. Having said that, the one important factor that students will focus on is your degree.

24HourAnswers.com

Students who need help with their homework can find it quickly and easily on 24HourAnswers.com ; this website offers online tutoring, homework help, and a library of academic solutions to college students. All of the services are designed to be fast and easy to use; therefore, students can get the help they need without any hassle!

Once you have verified your credentials and English proficiency, you can then give an estimate of how long it will take to finish the homework. You and the student can then agree on a price, which is usually around $13 for every hour – the process is simple: the student uploads the problem, you meet the student, they pay you, and then you finish the homework.

The Bottom Line

The list above features some of the best websites that compensate users for helping students with their homework. A simple Google search will reveal many more such sites; there are various other ways to earn extra money as well, such as taking part in surveys or polls on Survey Junkie and Swagbucks.

Be sure to thoroughly research any website you’re considering using (in terms of reputation, company terms and conditions, and payment methods and frequency) before committing to it. Doing so will help ensure that you have a positive and productive experience.

How can I find trustworthy websites that offer these services?

First, look for websites that have been around for a while and have positive reviews; next, make sure the website has a secure payment system in place. Finally, read the terms and conditions carefully to make sure you are comfortable with the services offered.

Are there any risks associated with using these services?

As long as you choose a reputable website that matches you with clients who are willing to pay for your services, there is no risk involved in using a homework help service. However, there are some less reputable websites out there that may try to take advantage of students and charge them exorbitant rates for subpar work. It is important to do your research before selecting a homework help service and only use one that you trust.

Do the people who offer their services on these websites have to undergo any kind of training or certification?

There is no standard training or certification required to offer services on these websites; however, many of these platforms have guidelines and requirements that must be met in order to be a verified member or provider.

What kind of qualifications do the people who work on these websites typically have?

The people who work on these websites have college degrees in subjects such as English, history, math, and science; they also have experience in tutoring or teaching.

How much money can be made by doing homework for other people through these websites?

It will depend on the specific website, the difficulty of the homework, and how much time is needed to complete it; however, most of these websites offer a commission-based system, so the more work that is completed, the higher the payout. In some cases, it is possible to make hundreds or even thousands of dollars per month by doing homework for other people.

What are the most popular subjects that students offer help with through these websites?

The most popular subjects that students offer help with through these websites are math, science, English, and social studies. Many students have a strong understanding of these subjects and are able to help others understand the concepts as well.

Why would someone use a service like this instead of just doing their own homework?

Oftentimes people use services like this because they either don’t have enough time to do their own homework or they need help to get a better grade. Sometimes people also use these services to get help with topics that they don’t understand well!

20 Best Ways To Get Paid To Answer Questions

Posted on August 4, 2023 - Tom Blake - This post may contain affiliate links that compensate us if you click or sign up. Please read our affiliate disclaimer for more information.

These days, there are so many ways to make money online if you have some skills or knowledge that people want. And this is especially true if you're an expert in a certain subject or are willing to share your opinions about something.

In fact, you can now get paid to answer questions right from the comfort of your own home. So, if you want to earn money online while helping people in need, it's the perfect side hustle to try.

I've also been using plenty of platforms that let you answer questions for money over the years. And in this post, I'm sharing some of the most legitimate and highest-paying options you can use to make money answering questions.

Let's get to it!

Table of Contents

How To Get Paid To Answer Questions

Generally, you can get paid to answer questions by using survey websites that pay you or by becoming an expert or tutor on an online platform.

Both of these options have plenty of companies you can apply to. So, think about the type of work you want to do and then dive into some options to answer questions and make money.

1. Become A JustAnswer Expert

JustAnswer is a platform that connects experts to people who need specific questions answered. And according to its website, JustAnswer experts can earn $2,000 a month or even up to $5,000 or more just by answering questions.

The reason rates are so high is because JustAnswer looks for experts to join its platform. This includes people like lawyers, doctors, vets, mechanics, teachers, and anyone who can provide unique insigh on specific questions .

JustAnswer-Expert

JustAnswer is also free to join, and you have to apply with proof of any certifications and pass a background check.

If you get in, you can work on your own schedule and then get paid monthly via direct deposit or PayPal. And, you get to choose the questions you answer for money.

Ultimately, JustAnswer is one of the most lucrative ways to give advice for money , so it's number one on this list!

2. Branded Surveys

Another one of my favorites ways to make money answering questions is to join  Branded Surveys .

This gpt website is free to join and is available in Canada, the UK, and the United States. As a member, you earn money for completing short online surveys and polls in your spare time .

Branded Surveys website

I've used Branded Surveys for over a year, and I like that it lets you cash out at only $5.

Your reward options include PayPal cash and dozens of different gift cards. And Branded Surveys recently came out with a mobile survey app as well, so you can earn money with your phone while you're on the go.

Sign up for Branded Surveys!

3. Become A Blogger

In my experience, one of the best ways to make money answering questions is to become a blogger.

After five years, blogging is how I make most of my income now. In fact, in 2022, This Online World earned $272,000 between Mediavine display ads and affiliate marketing. And these days, it makes $50,000 a month or more between all its income streams .

My 2022 blog income report and YouTube video share the exact steps I took to get here. But in reality, making money with blogging boils down to helping people with their questions and providing value to readers.

I also enjoy blogging since there are so many ways to make money, including product sales, online coaching, advertisements, and sponsored posts.

Plus, a blog is a great autopilot cash machine. After all, posts I've written years ago still get views and generate income.

The downside of this method to answer questions for money is that it takes time to build an audience. But you can start a blog for under $100 with some  SiteGround hosting and a basic theme, and the sky's the limit for income!

4. Experts123

Experts123 is another popular platform to get paid to answer questions, and is very similar to JustAnswer in many ways.

The platform lets you help people in need, and it pays experts with PayPal money for their efforts. Every article written to answer a question pays between $8-$20, and there are plenty of questions to answer if you’re qualified.

Experts123

Like JustAnswer, you can also answer questions for money in plenty of categories, including :

  • Entertainment
  • Digital marketing
  • Home Improvement
  • Parenting
  • Travel

If you’re certain that you have enough knowledge to answer almost any question in one of these categories, definitely consider signing up for Experts123.

5. Swagbucks

Like Branded Surveys, another easy way to get paid for answering questions is to use a website called Swagbucks .

This free and global paid survey site lets you share your opinion on topics like politics, health, science, and entertainment to get paid. And you can cash out via PayPal or with gift cards once you earn $1 to $5 .

Swagbucks sign up

I've used Swagbucks since college to earn extra money. And I like that it has other ways to earn besides answering questions for cash, including:

  • Shopping online
  • Playing games to earn money
  • Watching videos
  • Playing trivia for cash

Plus, Swagbucks also has a sign-up bonus for members of $5 to $10 depending on when you sign up.

Ultimately, if you want a versatile platform to make money answering questions online, Swagbucks is worth trying.

6. User Interviews

User Interviews is a popular market research platform that pays people for participating in a wide variety of studies.

The platform launches thousands of studies per month. Some involve product testing , while others are more like focus groups or involve virtual or in-person interviews .

User Interviews

Studies can pay hundreds of dollars, so this is one of the highest-paying sites on this list.

The main downside is that qualifying for studies can take time. This is because researchers usually want to hear from very specific groups of people, so you don't always match the necessary demographics.

Similar platforms like Respondent and Apex Focus Group have the same downside. But if you can qualify for a study, this is one of the best ways to get paid to answer questions.

You also get a $10 sign up bonus if you sign up for User Interviews with my link and complete your first study.

Extra Reading – Is User Interviews Legit?

6ya is a work-from-phone online job that pays users to help answer questions over the phone instead of through a forum or chat.

This can be a huge advantage for you if you enjoy talking on the phone or if your expertise is better explained over a call.

The average phone call on 6ya is between 3-10 minutes and pays $3 per call. That means you could potentially make up to $60 an hour! Plus, there’s a $100 sign up bonus for joining as an expert.

This isn't the right gig if you want online jobs without phone calls . But for experts who feel comfortable on the phone, it's a reliable way to answer questions for money.

8. Survey Junkie

If you're still wondering how to get paid to answer questions, one website you can sign up for is Survey Junkie .

This survey website is a free and easy way to share your opinion and get paid. And the site is available in the United States, Canada, UK, and Australia .

SurveyJunkie

I like using Survey Junkie since it only takes $5 to cash out, and many surveys pay $1 to $2. This means you can earn money quickly , and surveys cover a pretty diverse range of topics.

PayPal cash from surveys is available, as well as gift cards to companies like Amazon, Starbucks , Macy's, Sephora , and dozens of other retailers.

Sign up for Survey Junkie!

9. Studypool

Studypool is a massive site that helps students answer homework questions, write essays, and connect with tutors. And it's an excellent way to make money answering questions if you enjoy helping students succeed.

What I like about Studypool is that you can work on your own time and set your rates. So, it's a fun and flexible way to make money doing homework .

Studypool

You can also become a tutor on Studypool which is the most straightforward way to make money answering questions. And, you can even sell notes for cash on the platform, which could turn into a nice passive income stream if you have lots of old notes.

I’ve personally used Studypool back in college when I needed help writing an important essay for class, and the tutor did a great job.

The average Studypool expert earns around $20 per hour, with a lot of experts making $30k-$40k per year answering questions for students.

YouGov is another leading survey site that's free to join. And if you want a simple-yet-effective way to answer questions for money, it's worth trying out.

Like other survey platforms, YouGov lets you earn by sharing your opinion on different subjects. You can then cash out with dozens of different gift cards starting at $5 to $15 .

YouGov rewards

Surveys can pay a few dollars, which is a competitive rate. And YouGov also has gift cards to popular companies like Amazon, Target, Subway , Walmart , and Uber Eats .

You won't get rich with this site. But it's a legitimate and easy way to get paid for answering questions.

Sign up for YouGov!

11. HelpOwl

HelpOwl is a Q&A forum site where experts and employees of certain companies can help out users with their inquiries.

The big difference between HelpOwl and other sites that pay you to answer questions is that you earn points instead of dollars on this platform.

HelpOwl

You can then convert those points into gift cards. Every answer that a user accepts earns you 100 points, or 1,000 points if you’re voted the top answer for a question.

Plus, every community member that finds your answer helpful will reward you with 10 points per user.

Consider using HelpOwl to make money if you work in a niche field, like law or tech, and can help companies or people with very specific problems.

12. InboxDollars

InboxDollars is a free rewards website in the United States that's available to anyone who is 18 or older.

It's also a very simple site to use, and you can make money by answering questions with its paid survey section.

InboxDollars

InboxDollars also has numerous other ways to make money, including :

  • Getting paid to shop
  • Playing games
  • Watching ads
  • Surfing the web
  • Inviting people to join

Various gift cards and PayPal cash rewards start at $10 to $15. And I like InboxDollars since it has a $5 welcome bonus to get you started.

Sites like InboxDollars aren't going to make anyone rich. But this is a legit and simple way to answer questions and make money if you live in the United States.

Get started with InboxDollars   or read my InboxDollars review for all the details.

Weegy is another similar forum-based answering system run by a large community of members. And if you're an expert in your field, it's another way to get paid for answering questions.

It works on a points based system similar to HelpOwl, but the earnings are a bit more complex. In other words, there are more ways to earn points, but they pay less.

The minimum payout amount on Weegy is $20, but you can achieve this pretty quickly with a few high quality answers.

14. Become An Online Tutor

Online tutoring has become more popular than ever with students preferring remote learning sessions. And if you enjoy helping students learn, tutoring gigs are a great way to answer questions to get paid.

Some of the best sites to become an online tutor include :

  • Chegg – A site for textbook and homework solutions driven by experts in various subjects (up to $35/hr)
  • BookNook – A virtual tutoring platform to connect students with qualified and vetted tutors (around $18/hr)
  • QKids – Become a contracted English teacher for remote students (up to $20/hr)
  • VIPKid – Set your own schedule and teach English to students online (up to $22/hr)

This video from tutor Lisa Tran also shares tips for how to become a tutor if you want to try this online side hustle .

And, you can read my post on the best online tutoring jobs for college students and teenagers if you want even more resources.

15. Kashkick

Kashkick is another popular survey website where you can share your opinion to get paid.

I've also tested out Kashkick for several months, and it's a legit platform that lets you get free PayPal cash . And you can sign up for free if you live in the United States.

Kashkick

Many surveys pay $1 to $3 on Kashkick, and you can cash out at $10.

Plus, Kashkick also lets you play games for PayPal cash and has a pretty robust offer-wall section. So, if you want some versatility besides answering questions for money, Kashkick is worth testing out.

16. PrestoExperts

PrestoExperts lets people chat through email, phone, or online chat with experts to get help. If you’re an expert in your field, you can sign up with PrestoExperts and begin helping people to get paid to text and call people to give advice.

PrestoExperts

Some of the most popular categories for this site include :

PrestoExperts shares a portion of fees with its experts, and the platform is quite similar to JustAnswer.

17. SchoolSolver

Another site that pays you to answer questions is SchoolSolver .

This website helps students with homework and study questions by connecting them with tutors and professionals in the space .

SchoolSolver

The thing I like most about SchoolSolver is that you can see a list of queries from students that includes how much they’re willing to pay and what they need help with.

From that list, you just choose what you want to answer. The average answer pays about $5, but I saw some paying upwards of $50 per answer!

Keep in mind that some of the “questions” are really just asking you to write them an essay or answer a problem for them, which could take a few hours.

Maven is an online learning platform that allows professionals to make an impact teaching what they love.

Maven

Once you sign up, you join Maven's expert marketplace and can get paid to answer questions on demand by Maven's customers. However, this is more of a professional consulting gig, so you really need some credentials to get gigs .

Maven also claims that you can earn up to $30,000 in your first cohort. How much you earn depends on your niche and the clients you get, but this is one of the most lucrative side hustles on this list.

19. BestMark

BestMark is a mystery shopping company that pays you to go into stores and answer questions about certain products, customer service, and inventory concerns.

And while this idea is a bit different than the others on the list, it’s one of the better ways to make money without having to be an expert.

On top of mystery shopping, you can also earn money by interviewing customers about their shopping experiences and by auditing compliance codes within certain businesses.

BestMark pays between $7-$20 per mystery job, especially if you’re just starting out. Some jobs also pay more as you gain experience.

One final way you can get paid to answer questions is to use Fixya .

This website is also a good fit if you're less experienced in a certain topic but have a lot of experience with certain products.

Fixya

With Fixya, you essentially get paid to help users on the platform fix any issues with a certain product, including maintenance, building, or cleaning items.

Some of the most popular category on the site are :

  • Office Equipment
  • Cars/Trucks
  • Refrigerators
  • Motorcycles

Fixya pays around $3-$5 per answer, which can turn into an hourly rate of $60-$100 per hour!

How Much Money Can You Make?

In my opinion, it's possible to make $50 to $100 extra per month by answering questions for most people. This is because you can sign up for free sites like Branded Surveys   or Swagbucks   and begin answering short surveys for cash without any experience.

If you want to make more money with this side hustle, you probably need to be an expert at something. Alternatively, you could find online tutoring jobs or grow a blog into a business over time.

The reality is that most people won't make a full-time income with question-answering gigs. But I think many people can earn some beermoney without any experience if they give a few of these websites a try.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully these ideas to get paid to answer questions have helped you find some new ways to make extra cash.

My personal favorite platforms on this list are JustAnswer, Studypool, and SchoolSolver. They pay well, vet their experts, and let you work on your own schedule.

Beginners can also consider starting their own blogs, or using sites like Survey Junkie   or Kashkick   to make money.

And remember: you can always try multiple sites and maximize your income when certain sites are being slow. Even if you make $20 a day using these sites, that’s enough to pay for your groceries or other monthly expenses.

An all-American Bible — with a cut of the sales going to Trump

Donald trump finds votes and profits at the intersection of politics and religion.

how to get paid to do people's homework

Donald Trump is not a particularly religious person, if he is one at all. Even Americans who view him favorably are a lot more likely to say he’s “not religious” than “very religious.” He goes to churches for political rallies far more often than he goes for services. He says the Bible is his favorite book, though he generally qualifies that by noting that he’s also a big fan of “The Art of the Deal.”

Makes sense that he’d like his own book, given how much money he’s made off it over the years. On Tuesday, though, he announced a promotion that might endear him even further to the central Christian text: a “God Bless the USA” Bible, some of the proceeds of which will flow back to him.

Sign up for the How to Read This Chart newsletter

Trump announced the book on his social media platform, Truth Social — itself a particularly lucrative venture at the moment, given that its just-listed stock price has jumped nearly 50 percent .

“Happy Holy Week!” Trump’s post said. “Let’s Make America Pray Again. As we lead into Good Friday and Easter, I encourage you to get a copy of the God Bless The USA Bible.” He tagged musician Lee Greenwood in the post because the “God Bless the USA” singer is also touted as an endorser on the product’s webpage .

The promoted Bible has not only the standard books, but also a few additions including the Constitution (“which I’m fighting for every single day very hard,” Trump says in a video attached to the post), the Pledge of Allegiance and, as the webpage touts, the “[h]andwritten chorus to ‘God Bless The USA’ by Lee Greenwood.” It was originally slated for release in 2021, but an outcry from a number of prominent Christians derailed the rollout.

That was then. The current website for the book includes an FAQ that addresses the question of how the former president benefits from the partnership. It assures visitors that no money from the sale of the Bibles will go to Trump’s political campaign. Instead, “ GodBlessTheUSABible.com uses Donald J. Trump’s name, likeness and image under paid license from CIC Ventures LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.”

CIC Ventures, though, is a conduit to Trump — personally, if not politically. In his financial disclosure released last year, he’s identified as the company’s “manager, president, secretary and treasurer” and the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust is identified as a 100 percent owner of the business. The same entity also receives royalties from his book “A MAGA Journey” and speaking engagements. A person familiar with the agreement confirmed to the New York Times that Trump earns royalties from purchases.

In retrospect, we might have predicted this particular business venture.

First, Trump has increasingly branched out on his endorsement gigs, slapping his name or likeness on sneakers and NFTs in addition to campaign merchandise. He is in a cash crunch — personally and politically — and has been unafraid throughout his career to put the Trump name on anything that might yield a stream of revenue.

But, second, Trump has mined right-wing religiosity consistently for political support and political contributions. Why not branch out into private-sector benefits?

“That’s why our country is going haywire: We’ve lost religion in our country,” Trump says in the video hyping his new partnership. “All Americans need a Bible in their home and I have many. It’s my favorite book.” At another point, he insists that Christians are “under siege” and that “we have to protect anything that is pro-God.”

This is familiar rhetoric. In each of his presidential campaigns , he’s presented similar warnings and promises: Christianity is under threat, and he will be its relentless defender. He’s been effective at building fervent support among White evangelical Protestants, thanks to his insistent efforts to deliver on their political desires. He has been as effective at leveraging the insecurities of evangelical Christians as he has of White conservatives overall.

That this was perhaps predictable doesn’t make it less cynical. The pairing of foundational documents like the Constitution with the Bible has appeal to the conservative Christians Trump embraces but would unquestionably be viewed skeptically by the Constitution’s writers. And, again, even his supporters understand that he’s not really religious. If religion is as essential to America as he claims, why doesn’t that apply to him and his family? (In 2015, his putative church released a statement noting that he wasn’t an “active member.”)

More to the point, why is he plugging this Bible now? The answers are obvious: now because he needs money and this Bible because he benefits financially to some extent.

Perhaps you think I am also being cynical. After all, Trump offers that he’s pitching the book now because Easter is Sunday. Perhaps he simply wants Americans to have a Bible in-hand on the most sacred of Christian holidays.

We turn again to that FAQ.

“The God Bless The USA Bible is printed in limited-edition quantities,” it reads. “Most orders ship within 4-6 weeks of the time ordered. Your order will ship as it becomes available, and we will make reasonable efforts to ship your order as quickly as possible.”

You pay the cost of the Bible, shipping and taxes up front, of course. First things first.

Here's what happens if Trump can't pay his $454 million bond

Forty Wall Street, a Trump-owned building, stands in downtown Manhattan. Former President Trump says he can't secure a bond to appeal the $454 million penalty in his civil fraud case. But New York Attorney General Letitia James says she is prepared to seize the former president's assets, including the building at 40 Wall Street, if he is unable to pay.

Former President Donald Trump needs to arrange a $454 million bond to comply with a New York court ruling in less than a week, but the presumptive Republican presidential nominee says he can't find a company to put up the bond.

Trump's lawyers are asking an appeals court to stay the judgment, but the clock is ticking.

How did Trump come to owe the state of New York some $454 million?

Trump ordered to pay over $355M for fraudulent business practices in New York

Trump ordered to pay over $355M for fraudulent business practices in New York

This is the ruling that Judge Arthur Engoron issued last month , after finding that Donald, Eric and Donald Trump Jr., along with Trump Organization employees, engaged in a decade-long conspiracy to lie about the value of their assets.

In New York, if you make money by persistently committing fraud, you owe the ill-gotten portion back to the state. In this case, Judge Engoron determined that Donald Trump made over $350 million more than he should have if he'd been honest and when you add in interest, you get to $454 million.

Why does Trump have to come up with the money now?

Trump doesn't have to actually pay that money now, but he has to get a company to make a guarantee to the court that they will pay the money if he loses his appeal. That's the bond part.

But to get a bond, you have to put up assets, and in a court filing Monday Trump lawyers said they'd approached 30 companies but that getting a bond was a "practical impossibility," because they'd need a billion dollars in cash, which they don't have.

They submitted an affidavit from an insurance executive who had testified at trial, and whom the trial judge had already discredited.

Trump says he's a billionaire. Why can't he just come up with the money himself?

Trump said during a deposition for this case, taken about a year ago, that he had plenty of cash. He said, "I believe we have substantially in excess of $400 million in cash ." And, he added, it's "going up very substantially every month."

News organizations have estimated that Trump actually has about $300 million in liquid assets — but he already had to set aside $100 million or so to put up a bond to pay the verdict in the E. Jean Carroll civil case . The rest of his money is largely tied up in buildings and golf courses, and while he could sell a property, that can't happen right away. Trump said Tuesday that would be a "fire sale," though he said many times during the trial he could always find a buyer to pay top dollar.

While Trump's political action committees have spent millions of dollars on his legal fees, they're unlikely to be of help to him in this case because of campaign finance laws .

Trump has accused the judge in the case of trying to take away his rights, posting on social media that any assets he may be forced to sell would be gone even if he ultimately wins his appeal.

That's a concern that any defendant could raise, whether they're liable for $450 or $450 million, says Adam Pollock, a former assistant attorney general in New York.

"But if you want to bond the appeal — stop enforcement of the judgment — you have to put up the full amount," he told Morning Edition . "That's what the law says. And that's a policy decision that Albany has made."

The deadline is Monday. What does Trump do if the appeals court doesn't rule his way?

He can appeal to New York's highest court and ask that court to stay the judgment. If they don't, he can ask a benefactor or he could try and stall some more until he comes into money from the upcoming sale of his social media company, or he could — though it has many disadvantages — declare bankruptcy.

But New York Attorney General Letitia James has been clear: If Trump doesn't pay, she will move to seize his assets.

"If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court," she said. "And we will ask the judge to seize his assets."

Trump's noncash assets run to $3 billion, Forbes estimates, so there's plenty of value there. The law limits the AG to seizing properties that were a part of the case, but there's about two dozen of those, everything from the Doral Golf Club to 40 Wall Street to Trump Tower. She's not limited to New York properties, though there are extra steps if she chooses to go out of state.

She could, in theory, send a sheriff or a marshal to enforce the judgment, and that brings on another legal process with many more opportunities for delay.

Can Trump be forced to pay up?

James can begin enforcement of the judgment immediately after the 30-day grace period expires next week, says Pollock. And there are several devices she can use to try to get him to pay.

For one, he says, she could serve Trump a restraining notice that would restrict his spending in other areas until he pays his bond.

"The restraining notice would say: 'Don't spend money, don't fill up your jet at the pump, until you pay the state of New York, or you'll be held in contempt of court,' " Pollock says. "And my impression is that ... Engoran, the judge here in New York, would be quick to hold him in contempt of court."

He says it's theoretically possible that James' could consider settling, especially if Trump were to write a check for something like $250 million. But short of that, he doesn't see any reason for her to proactively lower his bond, especially since she has the tools to go into banks and drain his accounts.

"The entire trial was effectively a roadmap to his financial assets," Pollock adds. "She can now send out a sheriff or a marshal of the city of New York to go walk into a financial institution holding what's known as an execution and empty his bank account short of $3,000, which is the statutory floor."

Pollock acknowledges that Trump has said he doesn't have $450 million in cash. But if he wants to stave off enforcement, "he needs to find a way to raise it."

‘Old-fashioned embezzlement’: where did all of FTX’s money go?

Sam Bankman-Fried oversaw its collapse – now the crypto firm is in bankruptcy proceedings as contentious as his fraud trial

S am Bankman-Fried, former CEO of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX , presided over a spectacular collapse that cost his customers billions of dollars. He argues in court filings that anyone owed money by FTX “will eventually be paid in full”. The US government says he’s living in a fantasy land. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday.

Last week, FTX’s caretaker, John Ray III, appointed to oversee the company’s bankruptcy proceedings, reminded the court that Bankman-Fried had masterminded a “colossal fraud”, lived a “life of delusion”, and called Bankman-Fried’s lawyers’ claim that no one had been harmed as “categorically, callously, and demonstrably false”.

Bankman-Fried was sentenced after being convicted of fraud and conspiracy to launder money in the multibillion-dollar collapse of his cryptocurrency exchange. If given the maximum penalty, he would have faced 100 years in prison. His lawyers asked for a six-year sentence. The US government wanted to see the 32-year-old ex-CEO, who defrauded his own customers out of $8bn, sentenced to 40 to 50 years.

Attorneys for the Department of Justice argued that Bankman-Fried’s sentencing submission shows attempts “to reframe his crimes as mere mistakes or misunderstandings” – and if released at a young age there is “significant likelihood” he would commit another fraud.

Judge Lewis Kaplan doled out two and a half decades to Bankman-Fried. But even as the hubbub over the founder of FTX crests and then subsides, the bankruptcy proceedings of the cryptocurrency exchange are heating up, becoming as contentious as Bankman-Fried’s blockbuster trial. They are likely to continue long after he reports to prison.

FTX: new technology, old-fashioned embezzlement

The crypto entrepreneur laid a smokescreen, spending millions of customer funds on his lifestyle, drawing in politicians and celebrities with donations and endorsement deals, and fronting a pseudo-philosophy of effective altruism that boiled down to the greater the profits, the greater the good.

Last year, Ray testified to Congress that FTX’s collapse was “really old-fashioned embezzlement. This is just taking money from customers and using it for your own purposes.” Justice department prosecutors echoed his statements in the immediate aftermath of Bankman-Fried’s conviction.

At trial, the court heard from an accounting expert who said that $11.3bn in customer funds were supposed to be held at Alameda Research, FTX’s hedge fund arm. But only $2.3bn could be located. The rest had gone toward investments, political contributions, charity foundations and real estate purchases. FTX, remarkably, had left almost no records of transactions.

“The harm was vast. The remorse is non-existent. Effective altruism, at least as lived by Samuel Bankman-Fried, was a lie,” Ray said in a recent court submission, adding that he and his team had spent “over a year stewarding the estate from a metaphorical dumpster fire”.

At Bankman-Fried’s sentencing hearing, Kaplan agreed. He said FTX’s customers had lost some $8bn and that its investors had lost $1.7bn.

Who gets paid in FTX’s bankruptcy, and how?

FTX collapsed over 10 days in November 2022 and soon after filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy – a statute used to reorganize a failing company “in the public interest”. FTX’s exchange, its main product, was not so much reorganized as shut down.

On 31 January, FTX announced it would not reopen its exchange and would instead liquidate all its assets. It has promised to pay its account holders the value of the deposited crypto in dollars.

A series of civil lawsuits have challenged decisions made in the handling of FTX after Bankman-Fried’s departure, however. The company says it will pay creditors based on the value of their cryptocurrency at the time of FTX’s bankruptcy, when bitcoin was trading at just over $17,000. Bitcoin is currently four times more valuable, trading at over $67,000 – one of the main reasons FTX’s representatives say they can pay customers back. Plaintiffs in the suits argue FTX owes them the higher value, though.

Bankman-Fried invested $500m in the AI startup Anthropic when it was valued at $3.4bn. It’s now valued at about $15bn, and FTX plans to sell the stake for some $884m .

In a lawsuit filed in January, four FTX creditors said the plan to return customer funds did not reflect the company’s obligations under Chapter 11 bankruptcy law. Some have objected to their crypto holdings being converted to dollars – “dollarization” – and the transparency that would come with it.

Last week, Ray pushed contentions about visibility aside. The CEO said he could not return the crypto assets because they don’t exist. “A jury has concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr Bankman-Fried stole them and converted them into other things,” he wrote in a court filing.

Kaplan also rejected Bankman-Fried’s argument that customers could be paid back, and compared the former billionaire to “a thief who takes his loot to Las Vegas”, saying that Bankman-Fried was not entitled to leniency by trying to use his winnings to pay back what he stole.

Moreover, FTX bankruptcy claims have become a hot commodity, with the London-based distressed asset investor Attestor buying up the company’s assets at rock bottom prices. Attestor is now in a New York court defending itself from a Panamanian holder of an FTX account who wants the bankruptcy claim – now worth more than double – back.

FTX shareholders get zilch

One class of creditor is unlikely to see any of their money returned: FTX shareholders. Millions of shares were held by Tiger Global management, the Ontario teachers’ pension plan, Sequoia Capital, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, NFL quarterback legend Tom Brady and his ex-wife Gisele Bündchen, who both advertised for the company. Their stakes , once valued at tens of millions, are assumed to be worthless.

The bankrupt FTX has likewise had little success clawing back the charitable and political donations Bankman-Fried made, including $44.6m to Democratic candidates and causes, and at least $23.9m to Republicans in the last election cycle. In total, FTX dished out of $93m in political donations between March 2020 and November 2022. In February 2023, the exchange asked for its donations to be returned, claiming it would sue, but has not followed through with the threat.

But some of the beneficiaries of FTX’s PR largesse, designed some claim to influence regulations around crypto, have returned their donations: New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art returned $550,000 it received from FTX in 2022. Stanford, where Bankman-Fried’s parents work as law professors, pledged to return a $5.5m donation.

Academics raise questions about FTX’s bankruptcy

A recently published academic paper claims that FTX was placed in the hands of legal counsel, Sullivan & Cromwell, which had “undisclosed potential conflicts of interest” in its dealings with the company and Bankman-Fried “due to apparent errors, omissions and deceptions”.

Law professors Jonathan Lipson at Temple University and David Skeel at the University of Pennsylvania contend that “FTX is a cautionary tale about the power that lawyers have to frame, control, and profit from” claims about the public interest and that the bankruptcy included “bargain-basement asset-sales to favored insiders”.

In their paper, the academics called for an independent examiner to look at how the precipitous bankruptcy was handled.

“It doesn’t appear from the public record that they made any serious effort to restart the exchanges,” Lipson told the Guardian. “Sullivan & Cromwell had an unusually long and important relationship with FTX and with Bankman-Fried before bankruptcy, so our concern is that the appearance of a conflict of interest caused them to panic and mislead Bankman-Fried into giving up control of the company, which then may have distorted the criminal case and hurt depositors and creditors.”

‘His redemption narrative’

In a text exchange with the Vox reporter Kelsey Piper , Bankman-Fried appeared to diminish the underpinnings of the effective altruism ideology he once championed.

“I feel bad for those who get fucked by it, by this dumb woke game westerners play where we say all the right shibboleths and so everyone likes us.”

Last month, Bankman-Fried replaced his trial lawyer with Marc Mukasey, who has represented Donald Trump, and Alex Mashinsky, the former CEO of the bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange Celsius, another mogul accused of fraud. Mukasey has described Bankman-Fried as a hard-working billionaire who avoided the trappings of great wealth and fame, and whose brusque social manner could be ascribed to “neurodiversity”.

In January, the Yale Law professor Ian Ayres and the Stanford Law professor John Donohue, two friends of the Bankman-Fried family, published an essay in Project Syndicate making the argument that FTX had sufficient assets to make its customers whole.

And Daniel Chapsky, the former head of data science at FTX, wrote that Bankman-Fried was only interested in helping bankruptcy lawyers and had “worked almost around the clock, to the point of exhaustion”.

But the government has pushed back on those efforts. “The point is that the defendant is motivated to launch his redemption narrative and has already been thinking about how to spin it. It is realistic that he will settle on a narrative, lean into it, and convince other people to part with their money based on lies and the promise of false hope,” prosecutors said in a filing.

At his sentencing, Bankman-Fried’s redemption narrative was unsuccessful. He said he was “sorry about what happened” and that he had made “a series of bad decisions”, but Judge Kaplan still called him remorseless, castigating him for “never a word of remorse for the commission of terrible crimes”.

IR-2024-80, March 25, 2024

WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service announced today that almost 940,000 people across the nation have unclaimed refunds for tax year 2020 but face a May 17 deadline to submit their tax returns.

The IRS estimates more than $1 billion in refunds remain unclaimed because people haven’t filed their 2020 tax returns yet. The average median refund is $932 for 2020, and the state-by-state table below shows how many people are potentially eligible for these refunds in each state along with the median average refund by state.

“There’s money remaining on the table for hundreds of thousands of people who haven’t filed 2020 tax returns,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “We want taxpayers to claim these refunds, but time is running out for people who may have overlooked or forgotten about these refunds. There’s a May 17 deadline to file these returns so taxpayers should start soon to make sure they don’t miss out.”

Under the law, taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their tax refunds. If they don’t file within three years, the money becomes the property of the U.S. Treasury.

But for 2020 tax returns, people have a little more time than usual to file to claim their refunds. Typically, the normal filing deadline to claim old refunds falls around the April tax deadline, which is April 15 this year for 2023 tax returns. But the three-year window for 2020 unfiled returns was postponed to May 17, 2024, due to the COVID-19 pandemic emergency. The IRS issued Notice 2023-21 on Feb. 27, 2023, providing legal guidance on claims required by the postponed deadline.

The IRS estimates the midpoint for the individual refund amounts for 2020 to be $932 — that is, half of the refunds are more than $932 and half are less. This estimate does not include the Recovery Rebate Credit or other credits that may be applicable; the IRS has previously reminded those who may be entitled to the COVID-era Recovery Rebate Credit in 2020 that time is running out to file a tax return and claim their money.

“People faced extremely unusual situations during the pandemic, which may have led some people to forget about a potential refund on their 2020 tax returns,” Werfel said. “People may have just overlooked these, including students, part-time workers and others. Some people may not realize they may be owed a refund. We encourage people to review their files and start gathering records now, so they don’t run the risk of missing the May deadline.”

By missing out on filing a tax return, people stand to lose more than just their refund of taxes withheld or paid during 2020. Many low- and moderate-income workers may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). For 2020, the EITC was worth as much as $6,660 for taxpayers with qualifying children. The EITC helps individuals and families whose incomes are below certain thresholds. The thresholds for 2020 were:

  • $50,594 ($56,844 if married filing jointly) for those with three or more qualifying children;
  • $47,440 ($53,330 if married filing jointly) for people with two qualifying children;
  • $41,756 ($47,646 if married filing jointly) for those with one qualifying child, and;
  • $15,820 ($21,710 if married filing jointly) for people without qualifying children.

The IRS reminds taxpayers seeking a 2020 tax refund that their funds may be held if they have not filed tax returns for 2021 and 2022. In addition, any refund amount for 2020 will be applied to amounts still owed to the IRS or a state tax agency and may be used to offset unpaid child support or other past due federal debts, such as student loans.

Current and prior year tax forms (such as the tax year 2020 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR) and instructions are available on the IRS.gov Forms & Instructions page or by calling toll-free 800-TAX-FORM (800-829-3676).

High-income non-filers: IRS compliance letters coming

The IRS also announced Feb. 29 a new effort focused on high-income taxpayers who have failed to file federal income tax returns in more than 125,000 instances since 2017 with taxes being owed in many of those cases.

The new initiative, made possible by Inflation Reduction Act funding, began with IRS compliance letters going out in February on more than 125,000 cases where tax returns haven’t been filed since 2017. The mailings include more than 25,000 to those with more than $1 million in income, and over 100,000 to people with incomes between $400,000 and $1 million between tax years 2017 and 2021.

Need to file a 2020 tax return? Several options to get key documents

Although it’s been a few years since 2020, the IRS reminds taxpayers there are ways they can still gather the information they need to file this tax return. But people should start early to make sure they have enough time to file before the May deadline for 2020 refunds. Here are some options:

  • Request copies of key documents : Taxpayers who are missing Forms W-2, 1098, 1099 or 5498 for the years, 2020, 2021 or 2022 can request copies from their employer, bank or other payers.
  • Use Get Transcript Online at IRS.gov. Taxpayers who are unable to get those missing forms from their employer or other payers can order a free wage and income transcript at IRS.gov using the Get Transcript Online tool. For many taxpayers, this is by far the quickest and easiest option.
  • Request a transcript. Another option is for people to file Form 4506-T with the IRS to request a “wage and income transcript.” A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns received by the IRS, such as Forms W-2, 1099, 1098, Form 5498 and IRA contribution information.
