“Writing - like any artform - can be a lonely path to tread, but it doesn't have to be done in isolation. Never have I felt such warmth and compassion from a group of writers as I have from my peers and mentors at Carlow University, both in Pittsburgh and in Dublin. We all delight in our growth as writers and we celebrate each other's successes with love, as if they were our own.”

PHILIP BORDER '22
“Every member of the poetry, fiction and CNF programs all feel like extended family members to me. They are always checking up on me to see what's new with my writing and to keep up on all of my forthcoming publications."

Alum: I am alumni of Carnegie Mellon's School of Architecture. Many people don't understand the ethos of the school, but it's a consortium of conservatories for aspiring writers, architects, engineers, painters, industrial designers, computer programmers, etc. Unlike other schools, there's an explicit professional focus. The workload is intense, but the culture is collaborative. If this environment suits your temperament and aspirations, the benefit is tremendous! Our professors used to say, "If you can handle the work here, you'll find your professional life easy." The school motto says it all, "My Heart is in the Work." ... Read 1,441 reviews

Junior: I love the community of intelligent, creative, unique, and genuine students I am surrounded by at the University of Pittsburgh. The atmosphere is collaborative rather than competitive, and it fosters a true desire to learn. Our course selections are wide and interesting; there are some really niche offerings that anybody would enjoy. For the most part, my professors have been engaging and passionate, however I have had a few here and there who were either poor lecturers or had overly high expectations compared to the lower quality of instruction they provided. I think on-campus housing options could be slightly better, but I had a good experience in my freshman year dorm. Food options have definitely been evolving for the better since the start of my time at Pitt! ... Read 4,230 reviews

Graduate Student: I’m just starting my journey with Carlow. The outstanding feedback and quick replies to questions has been incredible by all involved. I’m very excited to start the 2.5 year DNS nursing program with Carlow. I am not required to be on campus but I have viewed it online and I am impressed. The program will start with classes, full time courses followed by clinicals. After speaking with one of leading admissions professors about the program, and how interested and welcoming she made me feel, I felt that good feeling in your gut, the ‘meant to be’ kind of feeling. I really hope this journey is a smooth one till the end. I plan on promoting carlow university to anyone I know that is looking to complete their graduate and undergraduate schooling, especially in nursing I had looked at a few schools before stumbling on Carlow, now I’m convinced given the reasonable tuition and program components, I have no doubt that it will Most definitely exceed my expectations as it already has. ... Senior: The school is a small private institution with a great conservatory of performing arts program. Other popular programs are business , funeral studies, and criminal justice. It’s not a largely diverse school, but it doesn’t feel like the school doesn’t care about changing that fact. There are many active clubs and proactive people on campus. The school doesn’t have much school spirit, but it has many great people and good teachers (even though the teachers really don’t get paid enough). The school is struggling financially and is trying to work on that while not trying to affect the students too much, so alot if administrative change is currently happening. Sophomore: I like Colorado College, and the block plan and small size really intrigued me into coming here, even though I'm not a native Coloradan. It's definitely a great location if you love the outdoors. Those are the main reasons I chose this school. I quickly learned that I could fit in here! However, from being here for two months, I have noticed some of the struggles the area and the school has, including housing and crime. Many cities have these issues, but CC in the Greater Colorado Springs area has tried to fix them to a degree, but there's clearly still work to be done... Not to be too pessimistic, however, I will say though that I've met many really nice people on CC's campus, especially the students, although I do tend to see the liberal and privileged side of things in a simple classroom environment often. I would say for this school to truly be diverse as they say, CC needs more diverse viewpoints as a whole. For now, CC has an amazing mathematics department, and that's my major. ... Read 785 reviews

Writing Pittsburgh
The Writing Pittsburgh project is an opportunity for Pittsburgh writers to share their stories about the city with a national audience.
We’re planning a series of books and events that will tell the real story of modern Pittsburgh’s rise to national prominence and provide networking and publishing opportunities for local writers and the area’s literary community.
Pittsburgh has been Creative Nonfiction's home for more than 20 years now, and we're publishing a series of three books about the region over the next five years. Along the way, we'll be hosting numerous events to encourage community involvement. Most important, we're looking for writers to pitch stories, participate in workshops, and gain professional publishing experience through a year-long funded fellowship.
